Jada Woodard
Virginia Tech

Hello!

My name is Jada Woodard, and I am a third-year interior design student at Virginia Tech pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Creativity and a deep passion for design have been essential to my identity, shaping my outlook and driving my goals. From a very young age, I have wanted to create, whether through music, art, or dance. These creative outlets became vital to expressing myself and have taught me to be innovative, hardworking, and compassionate. They have also given me the ability to connect with others and approach challenges head-on, which I believe are vital traits to have as a designer.

As I continue to develop my skills and knowledge, I am excited to use design to make a positive impact on communities. I am especially passionate about improving and revitalizing spaces in underserved communities. Through commercial, educational, and hospitality design, I hope to make spaces that are functional yet visually pleasing and meaningful. For me, interior design is about enhancing the way people work, live, and interact with a space and I am committed to that.

Concept:

Echoes draws inspiration from the traditional cosmo house of the Bribri people, an indigenous group known for their deep connection with nature and the cosmos. This shelter is a modern interpretation of this cosmic dome, providing a place of refuge that aligns with the Bribri’s tranquil beliefs and relationship with the environment. It is a space that increases survival in adverse conditions but also promotes a way of life that is in tune with the natural world, echoing the Bribri’s culture for the earth and the cosmos.

Interior

Phase 1 was the conceptual and learning phase with AI text to image features using Midjourney and Microsoft Copilot. These programs were the foundational inspiration for the interior and exterior of the survival shelter.

During Phase 2 the sketch to image AI feature was used to further our design. New AI programs such as Rendair and Stable Diffusion were also used to enhance AI image results. My group member made a Rhino model of our survival shelter as well to use with the 3D base to image feature on Rendair and Stable Diffusion.

All 1st floor, 2nd floor, and axon images were done by me in phase 3.

The objective of Phase 3 was to make and use a 3D model of the survival shelter in conjunction with AI to enhance the design of the interior. The final step for many of the AI images in this phase was to refine them in Photoshop using the generative fill feature.

Concept:

The hydrangea flower, a symbol of unity, contains numerous petals that come together to create one form that helps nature. This flower’s attributes mirror the harmonious relationship between humans and animals, emphasizing how different elements can unite to create a beneficial bond known as a symbiotic relationship.

Location

Denver, Colorado is a southwestern city near the mountains that is a very animal friendly and a nature rich region.

Plush Pals aims to celebrate the bond between humans and animals through the hydrangea flower’s balanced and energetic nature. Each plush promotes and embraces the companionship people share with the animals they love. An exciting and dynamic experience is crafted through curvilinear forms inspired by the petals on a hydrangea flower.

Blue and yellow, a rare color of hydrangeas, contribute an energetic yet sentimental atmosphere that represents the uniqueness of symbiotic relationships. Here, connections between people and animals blossom just like a hydrangea because of the interactive process that nourishes that relationship.

Target Audience

Families with children but also animal lovers who want to celebrate the companionship that humans and animals have.

Interior Design Office

Concept:

The North Star, a universal way-finding symbol indicating direction and hope, guides this office. The North Star represents a commitment to helping clients find their way home for the firm. Like sailors relying on the North Star to reach their destinations, the firm aims to provide hope and direction for people seeking affordable housing. Design strategies will relate to the star’s geometric precision and aspect of hope through curvilinear geometric forms and branded accent walls throughout the office.

IDEC Competition

Prompt:

A place of intergenerational communities and activities. This sheltered interior space should support the development of children and young adults, as well as the health and well-being of elders. The design must address people’s physical and psychological needs across the age and ability spectrum while providing opportunities for meaningful engagement. Key requirements include a gathering space that can comfortably accommodate up to 15 people for communal activities such as workshops, social gatherings, and group exercises, and a small gathering space for more intimate interactions, promoting deeper connections.

Concept:

This design draws inspiration from the butterfly’s life cycle, particularly the chrysalis, symbolizing growth, transformation, and individuality. Like the chrysalis, our space balances duality with an enclosed sensory room and an open communal area, fostering intergenerational connections that blend past wisdom with future hope. The minimalist, neurodiverse-friendly design reduces sensory overload while enhancing interaction and spatial efficiency. Inspired by the chrysalis’ graceful form, the abstract shell creates a harmonious environment that celebrates unity, resilience, and the collective beauty of interconnected lives, promoting a sense of community.
