DESIGN STATEMENT

My name is Jacob Wright. I design with a focus on how people actually use and experience spaces day to day. I pay attention to movement, comfort, and how a space feels in real life, not just on paper.

I like keeping things clear and intentional. A lot of my approach comes from observing people and understanding what makes a space work or not work.

I’m especially interested in spaces that support community and everyday interaction. To me, good design is practical, thoughtful, and easy to exist in.

My goal is to keep improving and create spaces that people naturally connect with and enjoy using.

Goal

An entry-level internship with a respected Interior Design firm where the skills that I have gained regarding spatial design, color theory, and environmental flow can be put into place andfurther developed.

As Kansas State University Interior Design major, I look forward to applying the knowledge I am developing in design studios, digital visualization, and material studies to real-life situations. I hope to gain hands-on experience from professionals in the field and to learn more about how design decisions affect one's human experience, sustainability, and functionality of space, all in preparation for a career in Interior Design.

01LAKE HOUSE

This project explores the design of a second home that functions as both a current family retreat and a future downsized residence. Located in a climate similar to Manhattan, the design responds to environmental factors such as sunlight, wind, and views while maintaining a strong connection to the lake.

The home is organized to support long-term livability, with all primary functions—living, cooking, dining, and the primary bedroom—on the first floor for ease of use as the owners age. The second floor provides flexible space for children and guests, allowing the house to adapt over time. Spatial planning emphasizes clear circulation, privacy from neighboring properties, and framed views toward the landscape.

01LAKE HOUSE

A key aspect of the design is the relationship between interior and exterior space. Communal areas extend outward into patios and shaded outdoor zones, supporting gathering, dining, and relaxation. Exterior elements such as planting, paving, and a water feature are integrated to create a layered outdoor experience.

Material and construction decisions prioritize durability and efficiency, incorporating ICF wall systems, radiant geothermal heating and cooling, and a solar-assisted hot water system. Overall, the project focuses on creating a flexible, environmentally responsive home that balances everyday function with a strong connection to its site.

02 JADE MARKET

This project focuses on designing a headquarters and market space for Hella Good Deeds, a nonprofit working to establish an Asian cultural district in Kansas City. Located in Columbus Park, the design responds to both the physical constraints of a compact site and the broader cultural vision of creating an inclusive, community-centered space.

The concept development process explored multiple design directions rooted in identity, gathering, and cultural expression, ultimately leading to a solution that reflects the diversity of AAHNPI communities. The final design balances functional needs—workspace, market, and service areas—within a limited footprint while maintaining a clear spatial hierarchy and intuitive circulation.

02 JADE MARKET

A key focus of the project is the integration of cultural storytelling through space. Material choices, spatial organization, and moments of display are used to celebrate a range of Asian identities without reducing them to a single narrative. The market and public-facing areas are designed to feel open and inviting, while office and support spaces maintain efficiency and clarity.

Through iterative design exploration, the project emphasizes adaptability, community engagement, and strong conceptual grounding. The final proposal demonstrates how a small space can support both daily operations and a larger cultural mission, using design as a tool for identity, visibility, and connection.

03 TIMBERLYNE OUTPOST

Final Design

This project challenged me to take full control of the design process by developing a multi-use residential environment from the ground up. Instead of being given a fixed program, I selected a client profile and created a detailed spatial program based on their lifestyle, needs, and goals. The project is located in Manhattan and uses the Timberlyne Outpost prefabricated structure as the base design system.

The design integrates a primary residence with an accessory dwelling unit, allowing for flexible use such as hosting guests, generating rental income, or supporting a home-based business. Emphasis was placed on user experience, requiring thoughtful planning of interior spaces, circulation, and multi-functional areas. The project also incorporates a second level connected by a stair, along with modifications to window and door placement to enhance spatial quality.

03 TIMBERLYNE OUTPOST

Key design priorities included sustainability, biophilia, and occupant wellbeing. I applied concepts such as natural light from multiple directions, intentional window placement, and material selection that supports environmental responsibility. The design also addresses regional considerations, including the integration of a safe room due to the site’s location in Tornado Alley.

A full site analysis informed the design, evaluating sun orientation, wind patterns, views, and surrounding context to optimize both interior and exterior experiences. Accessibility and visitability were also essential, ensuring the home can accommodate a wide range of users.

This project strengthened my ability to translate client narratives into functional, human-centered design solutions while developing clear visual and verbal communication through drawings, diagrams, and final presentation materials.
