The setting is nearly perfect for one-on-one meals (we love the secluded patio for alfresco dinners on comfortable evenings) but it’s really the food that keeps locals and visitors coming back for over 20 years. Start with a sampling of grilled Spanish octopus ($16), dive into tuna tartare with crispy wontons ($16), and finish with the local flounder, served atop warm orzo, sweet corn, sun dried tomato, edamame and Vidalia onions, sauteed kale, bell pepper-saffron jam and basil pesto. ($31). Oenophiles will appreciate the attention to detail—all servers are well-versed on wine pairings and selections run the gamut starting at $38 a bottle to a wide selection of $1,000 per bottle and up. Grab a margarita at the bar while you wait to be seated (trust us there will be a wait) and indulge in some of the tastiest, freshest Mexican food in town. Expect perfectly battered fish tacos, excellent guacamole and bowls of street corn, which probably shouldn’t be missed. Most of the tacos are between $4 and $5, though those with expensive taste can go for the filet mignonstuffed “Ten Dollar Taco,” a splurge at $6. Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays is full of all the classics—huevos rancheros, chorizo, and eggs—but it’s the Don Patrol ($12) that’s worth braving the crowds for. The quesadilla-like creation includes black beans, potatoes, chorizo, cheese and eggs. Perfect for groups and families.

WHERE’S THE BEEF?
Historically speaking, it’s right here in Florida.
BY JAMIE GROH
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, a small, rugged breed of cattle roaming Florida’s pastures is helping tell a much longer American story, one that predates the nation itself and may offer insight into the future of agriculture. Heritage Florida cattle can be traced to the Spanish livestock introduced after the arrival of Juan Ponce de León in 1521 and the later founding of St. Augustine in 1565. Their descendants today, known as scrub cattle, Pineywoods cattle, swamp cattle or Cracker cattle can be found across the Sunshine State.
Long before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock and long before the 13 original colonies were formed, these cattle played a critical role in early Florida settlements and trade. They also provided economic opportunity and a stable food source for early Floridians, according to Diane Ross, owner of Cat Tail Pond Ranch and a lifelong Pineywoods cattle rancher. “They’re a huge part of our history,” she says. “There are people like me who grew up in agriculture, and we don’t want others to forget about them. If we forget our history, we won’t be able to see our future.”
Some wild descendants of those early herds still graze Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park just outside of Gainesville, offering a glimpse into Florida’s pre-development landscape and agricultural heritage. The wild herd is managed through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
While they aren’t as popular today as other breeds that are descended from Scottish or German cattle, Florida heritage cattle are genetically identical to the ones brought over by the Spanish and Ponce de León. According to Ross, a genetic test was run on one of the north Florida herds, and they were a match for skeletal remains found in archaeological sites at St. Augustine’s Spanish settlement. Adapted to handling Florida’s heat, tough landscapes, parasites and diseases, they helped shape the state’s ranching traditions. Those same hardy traits could help today’s ranchers adapt to a changing climate by supporting more resilient, lower-maintenance livestock.
Through partnerships between local ranchers, St. Johns County and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension, efforts are underway to preserve the breed and use lessons learned to strengthen agricultural industries statewide. As the nation looks ahead to its next 250 years, Florida heritage cattle offer a model for how the past can help shape a more resilient agricultural future and smarter use of the land. u

You Are What You Eat
BY DOROTHY HAGMAJER
There are many ways to put out a fire. Smother it with a blanket. Douse it with a fire extinguisher. In most cases, though, you’d reach for water. It’s the simplest solution.
For conditions like chronic inflammation, your first line of defense is nutrition. A new study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine looked at whether daily intake of nutrients purported to be anti-inflammatory indeed reduced inflammation.
“We’ve been focusing on inflammation for a long time,” says Arch G. Mainous III, Ph.D., the study’s lead author and a professor in the UF College of Medicine. “We know what can cause inflammation, and we know what diseases are associated with it. But I think we need more focus on options to intervene and decrease inflammation.”
There are different types of inflammation. Some, like controlled burns in areas prone to wildfires, are beneficial. After you exercise, and during a fever, your body experiences necessary inflammation. Prolonged inflammation, however, can contribute to the development of cancer,
diabetes and heart disease. And hyperinflammation during a severe case of COVID-19 is linked to a higher risk of dying because of the strain it puts on the body.
The researchers used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2021 to 2023 to analyze adults’ eating habits across the United States. They tracked levels of a protein that is highly sensitive to inflammation, like a canary in a coal mine.
The result? One that is, perhaps, intuitive: A diet with nutrients like folate and vitamin C lowers inflammation—but you would need to eat far more than recommended dietary levels to reap the reward. If that feels overwhelming, the study also demonstrated a link between the recommended daily values of dietary fiber and magnesium, and lower levels of inflammation. For the average adult, a good rule of thumb is 14 grams of fiber per every 1,000 calories, while magnesium can be found in foods like leafy greens, nuts and legumes. Not every nutrient needs to be consumed in the same amount to make an impact.
“I was actually a little surprised that for a lot of them, the
recommended daily value was a level where we started to see a demonstrable effect,” Mainous says. “I didn’t know if we would have to go way above that to see an effect.”
In an era of social media-inspired trends such as protein and fiber “maxxing,” understanding what happens when a nutrient is consumed in excess provides context for a cultural phenomenon. Spoiler alert: Most of the time, very few aspects of our diet, if any, perform better at extreme capacity.
“I think people are looking for healthy ways to eat,” Mainous adds. “I think they want to do better than good. But I always want to ensure we link back to evidence. Does this stuff actually work? Does this really do it?”
In short, dietary recommendations backed by scientific research help make it all make sense.
“If you want to get up to the recommended level of something like fiber or iron, for example, I’m all for it,” Mainous concludes. “But if you’re trying to triple that, you might cause more problems for your health, instead of improving it.” u

CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET ?
No need for passwords at these First Coast speakeasies. You just need to know where they can be found.
BY JEFFREY SPEAR
MAYPORT GARDEN CLUB
Craving a little night life? Jacksonville has numerous bars, cocktail lounges and nightclubs, all offering the essentials for a memorable night out. If, however, you're looking for something a touch more exclusive, undeniably stylish, considerably more intimate, and somewhat off the beaten path, including top-flight cocktails served alongside live music, you may want to visit one of the speakeasies that have been slowly, and discreetly, popping up around town.
If you're not familiar with speakeasies, these were the establishments that illegally served alcohol during America's Prohibition years (1920-1933). They were small, dark and intimate, kept well hidden from the police, and frequently relied on false fronts and special passwords to get through the door. To keep these secrets, people would "speak easy" (quietly) to avoid detection.
The speakeasies that have been cropping up around town are nowhere near as hard-to-find as their
Prohibition predecessors. They're still relatively small, dimly lit and intimate. They're also fashionably retro, offer creatively conceived menus, high-end cocktails, and experiences unlike anything you might find in mainstream watering holes.
In search of a more mysterious speakeasy, make a reservation at Mayport Garden Club in Atlantic Beach. Once over the threshold, and although you'll be cloaked in darkness, Andrea will be there to guide you to your table. As your eyes adjust, you'll recognize this small, tropical themed lounge as the perfect destination for intimate gatherings and private assignations. An interesting note—just like Prohibition days—their spirits, liqueurs and cordials are all made in house using proprietary recipes. The classic Mai Tai ($14) and Pandang ($15) cocktails are top-shelf good. Pizzas, salads and other menu items from Reve (the sister restaurant next door) can be ordered tableside.
Equally well-hidden is The Volstead, discretely operating behind the red curtains at Snips Barbershop in
THE VOLSTEAD
the heart of Downtown. The only clue that you're in the right place is the inlaid "V" on the tiled entrance. Designed to embody the spirit of a 1920s speakeasy, this comfortable, dimly lit lounge maintains an exceptionally well stocked bar with plenty of rare spirits. They're also renown for their creatively inspired craft cocktails including the Salma Hayek ($14), a tequila forward beauty, and Divine Time ($14), a refreshing, citrusy floral punch. No matter the occasion, part the red curtains and enjoy.

easy inside Odd Birds Cocktail Lounge & Kitchen. While Odd Birds is celebrated for its wide selection of beverages and vibrant Latino cuisine, Charlotte 33 remains a relative secret, particularly unknown to tourists. Since revealing its location would spoil the fun, you'll have to visit (reservations required) to uncover its secret. As with most speakeasies, the room is dimly lit, eclectically decorated with a lush tropical feel, and serves up live music on weekends. While standard drinks are available, it's better to let the bartender make a personalized cocktail just for you. Of course, all the restaurant's Latino inspired foods including Cheesy Elote Gnocci ($22) and Cuban B ($16) are available for your enjoyment.
While not a true speakeasy, Buchner's Bierhalle in Murray Hill can be found behind a closed door in the back of the Blackhat Vapor Company store. Plus, there's visible signage on the storefront window and sandwich board just outside the front door, eliminating any sense of secrecy or mystique. Once inside, between the dim lighting, uniquely
BUCHNER’S BIERHALLE
retro wallpaper and an imposing bar that runs the length of the room, the notion of a speakeasy becomes a little more obvious. That being said, Buchner's is a German-styled beer hall serving European beers, wines and authentic German cuisine. While lacking the secrecy required for a speakeasy, Buchner's remains one of this city's quirky gems.
Originally opened as a speakeasy, The Parlour in San Marco Square is described as the worst kept secret in town. While the room is small, retaining its dark and intimate charm, you'll find an extensive selection of spirits, barrel picks including Whistlepig 10-year ($25), as well as craft cocktails such as the Paper Plane ($13). Openly promoted, The Parlour has simply become the live entertainment extension of Grape & Grain Exchange. Depending on the night, you'll find a DJ or singer/songwriter performing everything from jazz and soul to hiphop and funk. u

Longtime residents know one of Jacksonville’s signature culinary creation is the camel rider, an iconic Middle Eastern–Southern fusion pita sandwich stuffed with sliced cold cuts, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a tangy house dressing. The dish was popularized by the sizable ArabAmerican population that arrived in the city around the turn of the 20th century. There are a few places serving the dish, but none are quite like DESERT RIDER SANDWICH SHOP. The restaurant dates back to the 1970s, which by the looks of it, is also likely the last time the decor was changed. Fancy it is not, but the wood-panel walls and letter board menu provide an undeniable sense of mid-century comfort as you slide into a bright-orange booth. The Hogan Street location is the last surviving Desert Rider of three restaurants founded by businessman Larry Hazouri. You may be familiar with his niece, a certain Mayor of Jax named Donna. The restaurant continues to cater to everyone from businessmen and judges to construction workers and cops. Open 6:30 AM to 1:30 PM Monday through Friday.
Jacksonville has become home to a number of large format international food stores, best described as Asian grocery stores on steroids. One of these, offering a broad spectrum of fresh, frozen and shelf stable imported foods, is RD INTERNATIONAL MARKET. What’s special is its amazing selection of fresh and live seafood—arguably the largest in town. Flown in fresh on a regular basis, you’ll find red snapper, tilapia and yellowtail as well as coral shrimp, live crabs and lobsters. What’s truly amazing are the unquestionably exotic offerings such as live frogs, turtles, eels and a curious assortment of snails and bivalves. After just one visit, you’ll walk away wondering “How do you cook with all that.”
For the unitiated, GINGER’S PLACE is a small, windowless, dive bar that’s been a curiosity to passers by for years. A favorite among locals in Jacksonville Beach, the place offers a welcoming atmosphere and everything you could want from a neighborhood bar. Named after Ginger Lani, the owner (and once famous mermaid burlesque performer) who lived in the upstairs apartment, regulars believe that, since her passing in 2003, her apparition has been making surprising appearances. Of course, this could be attributed to the bar’s infamous Rocket Bomb cocktail. Made with Smirnoff Ice, raspberry vodka, blue curacao, and grenadine, it goes down easy, tastes just like a Rocket Pop popsicle, packs a wallop, and could have you seeing things.
Nothing screams summer quite like gathering your crew and sipping on a legendary SHARK TANK at The Backyard at Meehan’s in downtown St. Augustine. Served in a goldfish bowl, this bright blue, splashy cocktail is a blend of rum, fruit juices, and a tropical presentation of neon colored bendy straws, shark shaped gummy candies, cherries, and orange slices. It’s basically a party in a bowl. Looking for a solo adventure? Head to Meehan’s dog-friendly courtyard with your four-legged bestie and order up a Fish Bowl for one. The same delicious island vibes in a smaller serving size. We can’t promise the hangover will be any less severe.
In an unassuming strip mall along U.S. Hwy. 1 in St. Augustine is D’Aleo Italian Deli. This family owned eatery has been around since 1989 and has a cult following amongst those that call the Nation’s Oldest City home. One of the most popular orders is the GODFATHER SANDWICH, a salty and delicious collection of mortadella, capocollo, pepperoni, and provolone. Order it fully loaded with lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar, and hot peppers.
Nestled on the beautiful grounds of the St. Augustine
Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, TIN PICKLE is a World War II-themed spot housed in a Coast Guard Jeep garage from the same era. This quirky joint serves up house-made pickles in a variety of flavors such as Datil pepper and rosemary-garlic, as well as hot dogs, sangria, limeade, watermelon water, sangria popsicles, cookies, and more. It’s also a great place to relax and unwind after climbing 219 steps to the top of the lighthouse. The name Tin Pickle was World War II slang for a submarine or torpedo.
Located along Hwy. A1A south on the way to Matanzas Inlet, check out DIANE’S BEES ROADSIDE HONEY STAND. A small winding road leads to a peaceful bee oasis, behind a “Honey For Sale” sign. The honor-system stand has on-site hives, and Diane offers an array of different honey flavors like Datil pepper, cinnamon, lavender, key lime, and turmeric ginger. Additional products include honey spoons, an allergy tea blend, mosquito balm, and bee pollen. Once you choose the products you want to buy, write them down in a notebook at the stand, add them up, and send Diane a Venmo payment. And remember, save your honey containers and bring them back to reuse.
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Serving frozen treats from their walk-up window in Murray Hill, since 1948, the original DREAMETTE has earned iconic status as one of the best ice cream stands in town. While they offer a sizeable selection of frozen treats, they’re best known for hard-shell dipped soft-serve ice cream cones—dips available in flavors including, but not limited to, chocolate, cherry, peanut butter, and butterscotch; as well as their famous banana split in a cup—an original favorite since opening day. With its enduring reputation, the company now operates eight stands across town. While the ice cream is consistently good, the original location exudes classic charm that can’t be beat.
Hidden away in the corner of the Normandy Square shopping center is THE BARREL ROOM at the Golden Ox, a tiny sliver of a cocktail lounge that’s easily overlooked. What it lacks in size, however, is remedied by its breadth of spirits, including more than 100 whiskeys and nearly as many tequilas. Indulge in one of several flights featuring either bourbon, cognac, Scotch or tequila. Alternatively, there’s a healthy selection of craft cocktails conceived with obvious creative flair. A bonus—if you’ve enjoyed your selection, then head next door to Golden Ox Liquors and pick up a bottle to enjoy at home. How good is that?
If you enjoy Asian cuisine, including dishes that originate in countries such as Japan, India, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Korea, then head over to FOO DOG CURRY TRADERS . This modestly appointed neighborhood gem, adorned with Asian curios and artifacts on every wall, is tucked away on Stockton Street in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood. When it comes to curries, try their Indian Vindaloo, Cambodian Lime Curry, Malaysian Green Curry or Indian Buddha’s Korma. If they’re not your thing, there’s Japanese Kanpai Noodles, Korean Kimchi Noodles, Hunan Stir Fry and plenty more. Assuming you enjoy the flavors of Southeast Asia, be prepared. There’s too much to indulge in just one visit. u
