Of the priesthood, St. Augustine said, “Nothing is more consoling in this life and more precious to men than the office of the priest; but in the eyes of God, there is nothing more difficult and more dangerous.” Difficult and dangerous – yes, because we are men and although we are taken from among men to act for humankind in their relations with God, we are all too conscious at times of our own weakness and frailties. But impossible – no, because like Jonah, Jeremiah, Moses, Peter and Timothy we too have been chosen and sent with this assurance that He is with us to deliver us. Christ chooses us to share in His priesthood. It is a gift freely given by Him to express His love for us. The gift, if lived faithfully and generously by us, is the expression of our love for Him. In His name, , we are sent to preach His Gospel and not our own; to baptize in His name; to forgive sins in His name; and to bring comfort to the sick, the elderly and the dying in His name. The greatest and most important privilege we have received is the command “do this in memory of me” making present the Holy Eucharist, “the source and summit of the Christian life.” (Lumen Christi, Constitution on the Church) Faithful and Wise Stewards: A Letter to the Priests of the Diocese of Jackson +Joseph N. Ordination did not change our personality or individuality. … We are assured no immunity from doubt, fear or discouragement. We are given no guarantee of perfection, no pledge of infallibility; we are endowed with no super-human qualities. When we work, we grow tired; when we succeed in our work, we find satisfaction and accomplishment. When we fail, we suffer disappointment and discouragement. The world constantly watches us; it glorifies us, praises us, puts us on a pedestal; it criticizes us and judges us and at times even cruelly condemns us. I pray that we, along with the flock we have been chosen to shepherd, may be one in mind and one in heart. Together may we, in our participation in the priesthood of Christ, help to fulfill Christ’s prayer to the Father, “That all may be one.” As we minister together in the one priesthood of Christ, may you know that you are always in my prayers and I humbly ask a place in yours.
