Welcome

Welcome to the 22nd annual Professional Development Conference hosted by the Professional Women’s Association! We are excited that you have chosen to join us today as we commemorate our 25th Silver Year Anniversary of being an established on-campus organization. This year’s conference aims to evoke the spirit of legacies by reflecting upon the contributions of our legacy members and other impactful individuals who have paved the way for many of the opportunities and privileges that we enjoy today. It is our hope that today’s material will provide our attendees with skills and tools that will enable you to enhance the legacies you hope to leave within your departments, on our campus community, and beyond. PWA was founded to foster the engagement of like-minded women and has evolved into an all-inclusive association, promoting individual growth, self advocacy, and community involvement. Our conference will provide a variety of workshop offerings rooted in our three fundamental pillars: Engage, Empower, and Encourage reflecting the mission of the Professional Women’s Association at UCSB. The Conference Planning Committee has worked diligently to provide an environment that fosters networking, reflection, and alliance building. It is our hope that the material presented during today’s conference will allow you to contemplate the impact you wish to make, assist you with finding your voice, and provide you with some practical skills progressing you towards building on your own legacy. Sincerely, Conference Committee Co-Chairs

Manageable strategies and tools that can help get a handle on spending and borrowing by developing a smart budgetand ways to manage debt.

Trauma, Mental Health & Support Resources for PWA Kirsten Olson, Ph.D. (SB Mission)

Human Resources recognizes that coping with crises such as catastrophic wildfires, debris flow, and incidents of mass violence can result in anxiety, stress, grief, and other forms of distress that may be impacting your work and overall well-being. This workshop will facilitate an opportunity for the community to gather and learn about the impact of traumatic events, services for staff, faculty, and students, and ways to support each other and the community.

Staff and Faculty Relationships: Exploring the Dynamics, Empowering Greater Collaboration David Holmes (State Street)

Working with faculty brings a set of unique challenges that can be difficult to navigate for both new and seasoned higher education professionals. By exploring some of the underlying drivers of these two separate yet diverse groups, we can better understand the dynamics of faculty-staff relationships. The knowledge gained by recognizing relationship dynamics and their connection to challenges many staff face when working with faculty, can help empower staff to overcome these hurdles and develop stronger, more collaborative, and non-hierarchical relationships with faculty partners.

Cultivating Happiness 2.0 Barbara Byrge (Corwin)

Happiness is a wonderful goal, but it eludes us all at times. There are practical steps you can take to increase happiness in your life. Barbara draws on her UCSB and life experiences, as well as her health journey including the good, bad and ugly, to offer practical advice on thriving at work and beyond. Barbara will discuss tools anyone can use for an attitude adjustment that will help you minimize frustration and get you in your flow!

We’ll discover how integrating all three of our minds – head, heart, gut – invites us deeper into our innate power and wisdom.

En nuestra vida pasamos por varias etapas o ciclos, como la mariposa. Igual que las mariposas, necesitamos que entender la importancia de cada ciclo para usar ese tiempo efectivamente para si mismo para poder volar como las mariposas. The Gifts of Imperfection Dr. Nancy Tylim (State St)

Based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown, This highly experiential workshop will help you connect to your creativity and look at patterns that hold you back from being your most authentic self. We’ve all experienced pressure to live up to other people’s expectations. We go through our lives, in our family, work, community, believing that we’re not enough and with the fear of failure or falling short. Perfectionism is the belief that if I look perfect and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the feelings of blame, shame and judgment.

3 Keys to Superhero Resilience Alexis Donkin (Goleta Valley)

What is the difference between someone who suffers or thrives? Can that difference be learned or is it in a person’s nature? These are the questions author and speaker Alexis Donkin sought to answer with her memoir, THRIVE: HOW I BECAME A SUPERHERO. In this workshop based on her memoir, Alexis shares three necessary keys that anyone can use to transform one’s life. Using real life examples, she shows that no matter what happens, truly anyone can thrive.

Imagine what it would be like to never doubt another negative comment. How would this change your life? In this workshop, participants will learn about three areas of personal mind and heart development. They will have the opportunity to experience simple daily practices that when done consistently can transform every aspect of life for the better.

Speaking Up: Women & The Money-Talk Taboo Sharon Cox (Flying A Studio)

This interactive program examines the high cost to women’s well-being when we don’t ‘speak up.’ Individually and collectively women are poised, more than ever, to find their voices. Yet we are often reluctant to have meaningful money talks. We will examine why and the benefits of having financial conversations with friends, family (strengthen your relationships), and at work (boost your negotiating skills). You’ll leave the session with practical examples to empower and encourage you to break the money-talk taboo. The presenter is Sharon Cox, a financial professional and money coach for women, www.themoneydance.com.

Growing up we were told many things which have molded and shaped who we are today. Join me as we discuss some of those social and cultural expectations based on your experiences. We will also be able to share some life lessons that lead to no more excuses and no more fears. Let’s let go together!

Intuition: The Dynamic Instrument of Authentic Leadership Erin Prewitt (SB Harbor)

Do you know the value of your own intuition? Empowering yourself is the vital instrument of an effective and influential leader. This interactive workshop delivers the tools necessary to be mindful in decision-making, increase peaceful professional relationships and ultimately lead to success rooted in personal power.
