Our 2016-2017 Annual Report commemorates another year of God’s graciousness to our school, a year made possible by your faithful giving. When Joann and I consider how this sweet community of teachers, coaches, and parents has poured into the hearts of our daughters, we are overcome with gratitude. We consider it a privilege to stand and be counted in our giving with hundreds of other families, foundations, and friends.
The mission of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is to provide a truly Christ-centered education for our children through an environment which develops and encourages academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a lifelong love and desire for learning. Our goal is to prepare students to succeed in competitive environments and to develop their unique abilities to the fullest. The Callis Family
We believe strongly that God honors our seed of faith and uses it to strengthen and prosper our school so that it stands as a “mighty oak of righteousness” in a forest of disbelief. And has that goal ever been more important than it is today? As America has pushed God out of the public square, the once clear connection between freedom and faith has been lost. If we are to repair those ruins, we must begin with our children. By supporting us with your giving, you help to ensure that we will continue to bolster the faith of girls and boys for generations to come. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” In sharing a portion of your treasure, you signal that your heart supports the Kingdom building work we do with children every day. We recognize there is no shortage of worthy causes and ministries in which we can invest. So, on behalf of the 735 faculty, staff, and students of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy, please accept my deepest gratitude for remembering our school in your giving. Oh, the Places We Go! Time spent praying, laughing and oftentimes serving together draws students closer to each other and closer to the Lord. Days spent away from the Academy buildings are an important part of MBCA’s mission. As Jesus taught his disciples, we, too, believe in the value of teaching within the context of sharing life together. Relationships are enhanced and lives are touched during these times beyond the classroom experience. MBCA students, beginning in fourth grade, travel each year with their classmates to either a retreat setting or to perform hands on mission work, both in the United States and abroad. Mission trips invite students to be fulltime participants in God’s plan. These experiences open eyes and draw students toward Jesus in a way the classroom cannot. When their comfort levels are challenged, and they truly find God at work in the world, students learn to apply their faith to real-world living.
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ – Acts 20:35 In 2016, students from the Lower, Middle and Upper schools provided 335 shoeboxes filled with small toys, school supplies and toiletries to Samaritan’s Purse for Operation Christmas Child. Samaritan’s Purse is an international Christian relief and evangelism organization. These simple gifts are shipped outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. Through the shoebox project, MBCA students are able to share their blessings and the good news of Jesus Christ with children in need around the world. Thank you for your generosity in supporting Operation Christmas Child. Please watch for information in the Eagle Eye and in your student’s backpack for how you can help in 2017.

In April, our fourth graders enjoyed two days and one night at the Wahsega 4-H Center in Dahlonega, GA. While there, students participated in outdoor classes such as stream ecology, herpetology, entomology and nocturnal life. Coach Hall led the group in games during the evening, and each cabin came together for devotional time just before bed. The students also served in Wahsega’s kitchen, helped with bathroom cleaning and yard clean up.
The fifth graders spent two nights and three days at the Driftwood Education Center in St. Simons in October. This trip is the culmination of the study of the oceans and the Georgia coastline. While at Driftwood, they studied the island’s beach, forest and marsh ecologies. From boats, the students used drag nets to catch ocean creatures for study, and visited Boneyard Beach to learn about the erosion of the barrier islands and their importance to our coastline.
Sixth Grade students visited Washington, D.C. in May, spending three days in our nation’s capital to explore the monuments, documents, museums and memorials that represent the fascinating people and events that shaped America.
In the spring, seventh grade traveled to Lineville, AL to immerse themselves in conditions similar to developing countries and areas affected by devastating poverty levels. SIFAT (Servants in Faith and Technology) operates a retreat campus in Lineville that helps train people interested in mission work by exposing them to the housing, sanitation, food and safety challenges they will likely face in areas where their mission work will be carried out.
In May, with hearts ready to serve, our eighth graders arrived in Chinle, AZ to live, work, play and pray with the people of the Navajo reservation. They spent seven days exploring the desert landscape, attending school and Bible study with the Navajo children, and assisting with light home repairs and deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables. As part of their ministry work, students also spent time with residents of a local nursing home. A visit to the Grand Canyon and a May snowfall capped off a week these students will never forget!
All grade levels spent time together at a fall retreat at the Alpine Camp in Mentone, AL, for two days of team-building, fellowship and prayer. Over the winter break, a smaller group of Upper School students visited San Juan, Puerto Rico. MBCA is working to build a lasting relationship with the residents of San Juan, making this the third year in a row they traveled to the same Methodist church where many of the families are low-income. The MBCA students ran a Vacation Bible School for the children who attend the church’s elementary school, and also cleaned and performed repairs on the school building. They served in a homeless ministry and visited residents in a nursing home. On the last day, students were treated to exploration of Puerto Rico’s beaches and natural beauty. A return trip to the same San Juan church is planned for the 2017-2018 school year, as is a trip to Liberia, Africa where students will have the opportunity to serve in an orphanage.

4th annual eagle classic
Golf Tournamen t
Golfers of all abilities took to the course on Monday, April 17, 2017 for the Fourth Annual Eagle Classic. The tournament, held at Indian Hills Country Club, is the largest fundraiser for the 8th grade mission trip, and this year’s event was an overwhelming success. It was a warm day full of competition and fellowship as participants not only enjoyed a great day of golf, but were also encouraged to compete for some fabulous prizes. A cash prize of $10,000 and a 2017 Infiniti SUV were two prizes available to winners of two separate hole-in-one competitions. Though neither prize was nabbed, there was one clear winner of the day: the 8th grade mission trip to Chinle, AZ!
Given the wealth of online information, it’s tempting to think going it alone with the college application process is a fine idea. But as Sarah Bates, MBCA’s College Counselor, will tell you, the process is completely unique to every student and their family. And here at MBCA, Sarah guides each Upper School student through a proprietary program, The Compass Program, to make the college application, selection and transition process as seamless as possible.

In 10th grade, each student completes a YouScience aptitude assessment. “The assessment really helps them figure out an answer to the question, ‘How did God wire me?’” said Ms. Bates. “Our intent is they will go to college and not face switching schools or switching their majors a dozen times.”

By the 11th grade, students are ready to consider career possibilities and dive deep into the college search. Every student and their parents attend personal conferences with Ms. Bates and the process begins, including an approach to the financial piece of college. “We speak carefully to the students about not taking on an inordinate amount of debt that they can’t get out from under,” said Ms. Bates. “We teach them what the implications of such debt are if they choose to incur it.” The price of college can appear overwhelming, but MBCA uses a program called Naviance to further assist getting the right students in front of the right colleges at the right price. Although the navigation process can be daunting, there are thousands of scholarship opportunities available to students. “We stress to our students that a bunch of small scholarships can potentially add up to cover almost an entire semester or more,” said Ms. Bates. “We also focus on the HOPE scholarship and the significance of their GPA when considering HOPE.” By Christmas, early-action and early-decision notifications begin trickling into mailboxes. “We’re very enthusiastic,” said Ms. Bates. “It’s a long journey but it is so special to see these students make their own futures.”

Rooted. Faith. Thankfulness. Those three words, in this verse, stand out to me. I don’t know about you, but when I look at the world around me, I worry we’re getting lost. We, and our children especially, get carried away in the ways of the world instead of God’s word. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t ready for summer to end. I didn’t want to let go of my time, my influence, or my snuggles with my kids. But then I remembered where I get to send them. MBCA is a place where my standards, my faith and my love are reinforced daily. Mt. Bethel isn’t just a school; it’s an extension of us. Yes, our kids are receiving a stellar education, but it’s more than that. It’s a safe, Christ-centered home to the precious hearts and minds of tomorrow. This is a place where our kids are ROOTED firmly and lovingly in their FAITH so they can conquer whatever lies ahead. When I see our students marching around campus with their friends and their backpacks, I see a little army of believers who are being strengthened in all the right ways. These are the people who will change the world. They will be the light we desperately need in a sometimes dark world.
My THANKFULNESS for MBCA as a mom is immeasurable. My THANKFULNESS to you, my friends, my fellow parents, my peers, my donors is boundless and unrelenting. Without you, your continued support, your generosity with your time, your money, and your prayers; MBCA would be so much dimmer. You are the light. You are the example of selflessness and sacrifice from which our children learn. Thank you MBCA family. Thank you for all the ways, each and every day, you choose to lift up MBCA. Each time you choose MBCA with your time, your money and your prayers, I believe you are strengthening God’s Kingdom. That is no small thing. That is everything. Members of the Parent Council Board are elected from the school community and, for the most part, serve one year terms. Nominations are solicited in the spring of each year with the new Board being seated on April 1.
The Parent Council works to support the Academy in many ways. • Promoting unity, cooperation, and involvement within the Mt. Bethel family and supporting the work the Academy does for its students. • Fostering open and accurate communication between parents and the school. • Organizing social and fundraising events that enrich our children’s experiences beyond the operating budget. The MBCA Parent Council gives a voice to Academy parents while taking charge of so many of the events that help make the MBCA community such an active and nurturing place. To name just a few of the 2016-2017 Parent Council Board’s efforts: The Back To School Bash, The East Cobber Parade, Staff Breakfasts, Open Houses, Room Mom Coordination, Muffins With Mom, Donuts With Dad, The Spring Fling & Auction, Teacher Appreciation Events, Thanksgiving Feast, Middle School Dance and Middle School Christmas Party, Upper School Prom, Field Day T-Shirts and Volunteers, and Summer Grade-Level Playdates. I may be the relative new guy on the block, but I have to tell you, it doesn’t take long to appreciate that Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is a tremendous asset to our church and community.
As a minister, I look at what goes on at the Academy, and I’m greatly encouraged. The students are not only pursuing academic excellence, but they are scholars of the Bible as well. The faculty and staff are Godly men and women, diligently leading by example and weaving Christian principles throughout their teaching. There are foreign student sponsorship programs, local service projects, and mission trips, all following the example of Jesus Christ and His commands that we love and serve one another. It’s impossible to look objectively at the Academy’s impact without recognizing the amazing work it’s doing to grow the Kingdom of God. As a parent to three Academy students, though, I am blown away on a weekly basis. I see the work my children are doing, I hear what they’re learning, and I witness the effects of their time at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. They are growing in their faith, maturity, compassion, and individuality. I’m sure that my fellow Academy parents would agree that when we send our kids to school each day, we do so with the confidence that our children are not only being taught – they are being valued. I know that the fall semester is well under way, and the students, faculty, and staff are settled into the small daily routines of school life, but I just want to encourage you all and remind you of the big picture that God has in store for us. I see the Kingdom impact you’ve made already, and I’m excited to witness what’s next for us as we experience the 2017-2018 school year together.

The benefits of school equestrian teams are numerous. It is a team-building environment that creates great friendships and teaches the riders how to juggle hard, physical work, mental preparation, plus care and maintenance of the animals. But most of all, it’s fun! The members of the inaugural MBCA Equestrian Team have many reasons to ride tall in the saddle. The MBCA team competed as a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). With six Middle and Upper School girls of varying horsemanship backgrounds on the roster, the team went on to complete a successful first season last fall and winter. In December, MBCA co-hosted a show at Foxcroft Farm in Milton with Lassiter High School. It is an IEA requirement that each school hosts one show each season. The MBCA show featured more than ten teams with some riders traveling from as far away as Florida.
The IEA operates in a way that makes equine sports accessible to a wide range of interested students. None of the riders supply their own horses or tack. Instead, the host team arranges for the horses and equipment. Since the horse is new to the rider, the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation. All disciplines offer a variety of ability levels from beginner through advanced. The IEA has set guidelines for the placement of new riders entering the IEA to allow for the unique program format of riding an unfamiliar horse. Equine sports are growing in popularity across the United States. IEA is comprised now of more than 13,000 members in 42 states. There are potential college scholarship opportunities for the most committed riders, but riders at every level stand to benefit from the knowledge and relationships that develop in the barn and on the horse. Annual Fund gifts are a taxdeductible way to bridge the gap between what tuition covers and the actual cost incurred to provide a truly exceptional, Christ-centered, college preparatory education. Gifts to the Annual Fund are unrestricted and are a critical component of the Academy’s operating budget. what ’s the difference Ten percent of the Annual Fund is set aside in the Academy’s endowment. An endowment helps secure the long-term financial health of the school and is quite literally “the gift that keeps on giving.” Using the biblical principle of tithing, we set aside 10% of our annual giving proceeds to ensure God’s blessing on our school for generations to come. As a young school, our endowment is small. With regular care and investment, the endowment fund will one day generate earnings to fund financial aid and other commitments while also serving as a hedge of protection against fluctuations in the economy and environment.
By thoughtful and intentional design, the Academy’s annual operating budget is funded only 93% by tuition and fees. The remaining necessary dollars come from YOU. Tax-deductible contributions to the Annual Fund allow MBCA to fill in the 7% gap in the budget while pricing tuition at a rate that is accessible for a greater number of families. Without a successful Annual Fund, MBCA will face tuition increases and programming cuts that will affect current and future students and families.

Thank You In 2016-2017, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy once again partnered with Georgia GOAL, a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) created through the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program. By allowing Georgia taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income tax to MBCA, GOAL provides critical funding for qualified students in need of tuition assistance. The GOAL program furthers MBCA’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. The Academy is so grateful to the participating individuals listed below for bringing $127,859 in scholarship money to MBCA. Financial aid continues to be of great importance to us, as 16 percent of MBCA students receive tuition assistance. Spring Fling Auction

In March, MBCA parents, faculty and staff joined together at the Pavillion at Olde Towne in east Cobb for the 17th Annual Spring Fling and Auction. The Spring Fling and Auction is the school’s largest fundraising event of the year and it significantly impacts the day-to-day activities of the students. The $67,000 raised from the 2017 auction funded two really exciting additions to MBCA for the 2017-2018 school year: a “Think Tank” class to provide STEM instruction and learning opportunities to our JK – Fifth grade students, and equipment for our very own MBCA marching band drum line, sure to bring extra pep, spirit and support for our Eagles. Dear Mt. Bethel Family, Recently, I have observed many students from our first MBCA kindergarten class beginning their careers and some beginning their own families. In my excitement for these young adults, I am reminded of the significance of our ministry at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. As teachers we take seriously the academic and spiritual influences God has given us to impact the hearts and minds of future adults. To see the dividends of investments made early in a child’s life is not only rewarding, but motivating. It moves me to continue pouring my heart into each child that enters our school. As the 2016-2017 faculty representative, I was thrilled to encourage faculty and staff to support our school by giving to the Annual Fund. Knowing their level of commitment to God and to the students of Mt. Bethel, I felt confident that my task would not be difficult. When people value others and believe in their ministry, they are moved to action. Our teachers and staff are moved to action on a daily basis from staying late to prepare lessons, to going on mission trips with students, to cheering on students in their extra-curricular activities, to spending time in prayer for the students, we believe in Mt. Bethel Christian Academy. When we reached our deadline, it was 100% obvious that our faculty and staff are 100% behind the ministry of MBCA by their 100% participation in the 20162017 Annual Fund.
