Oakland County Chapter HISTORY
In early 1976, Robbie Johnson and Bobbye Wilhite discussed starting an interest group of mothers residing in the Oakland County area. The goal of the group was to promote social, cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for their children. Recognizing their goals were compatible with Jack and Jill of America, Inc., these mothers organized a provisional chapter in late 1976. The Oakland County Chapter was approved at the 23rd National Convention in 1978 as the 163rd chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. On September 10, 1978, the installation of the Oakland County Chapter into Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was a celebrated event at the Wabeek Country Club. Thirty-nine mothers became charter members committed to the common goal of promoting social, cultural, educational, recreational, and community service opportunities for their children. Our charter members were Mattie Allen, Kay Armstrong, Juanita Baker, Barbara Benford, Janice Bowdre, Edna Brown, Delores Calhoun, Diane Crear, Mae Farr, Ellen Ferguson, Bobbye Galloway, Reida Gardiner, Cynthia Gayles, Katherine Generatte, Gail Harper, Julia Harrold, Clorinda Isacc, Jean Johnson, LeBertha Johnson, Robbie Johnson, Ruth Keel, Sandra McClandon, Carole McCollough, Francine McRipley, Marva Morris, Betty Nails , Rita O’Reilly, Patricia Parker, Theresa Preston, Paula Ross, Theda Rucker, Jane Savoy, Barbara Scott, Marye Tisdale, Ruth Tucker, Deirdre Waterman, JoAnn Washington, Bobbye Wilhite, and Jackie Williams. Today, the Oakland County Chapter consists of 79 mother members, 123 children and 76 Associates/Life Members. We meet the aims of the national organization through programs focused on leadership development, cultural exposure, community service, legislative advocacy, and philanthropic giving. In 2023, we celebrate 45 years of serving the Oakland County community and a legacy of leadership. This legacy includes innovative youth programming, Five Star Chapter Excellence (2014-2016) and our signature philanthropic focus of granting academic incentive awards to deserving college bound youth in Oakland County. 7|P a g e

The Oakland County Chapter has submitted and received grants awarded from the Jack and Jill Foundation to impact our community including a chapter reading corner grant with Developing K.I.D.S. an organization that provides after school and summer programs and educational enrichment for youth; Calebs Kids an organization that works to create a nurturing environment for 6th-12th graders to heal from trauma and to have a safe space to discuss and embrace the topics of suicide and mental health; facilitating an ACT Prep Course for the Boys & Girls Club of Pontiac as well as providing the Pontiac Public Library with computers, printers, educational materials, books, and videos resulting in a room dedicated by the Oakland County Chapter. Our Teens and Children have engaged in community service projects throughout Oakland County including: cleaning, sanitizing, painting, garden and creating family support packets for Care House of Oakland County; Baldwin Center donations of children and youth books, interactive specialized books for children with special needs, educational games and videos; Kid’s Helping Kids Wrap Party and Toy Drive for pediatric cancer patients; VA Hospital Drive; Voter Registration Campaign at the Detroit Eastern Market; and Christ Church Forgotten Harvest; partnering with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America for our MLK DAY Community Service Celebration; collection and contribution to the Midwest Region Teen Mask Community Service Project. The original teen group goal was 50 masks and over 150 masks were sponsored and provided to black entrepreneurs in need of PPE as well as essential workers and medical offices. Our chapter continues to partner with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America by participating in raising funds during the Annual Sickle Cell Awareness Walk for the month of September; support of our Teens with donations and/or walking as they have selected to contribute annually to the American Cancer Society: Making Strides Oakland and Macomb Counties Annual Cancer Walk for the month of October; participating in the 100 mitten drive in November to support C.O.T.S. Detroit; participation in activities for the Annual MLK DAY Community Service Celebration in January; collection of both food and monetary donations to reach the yearly defined goals for contributing to select charities and alignment with Souper Bowl of Caring. 8|P a g e

Oakland County Chapter HISTORY
The Oakland County Chapter has awarded college scholarships to Oakland County high school graduates with a total surpassing $300,000. For 2021, $11,723 was donated to the JJOA Foundation and $22,273 was awarded in academic incentive grants with a shift from our usual high school graduate recipients to including freshman and sophomore students affected by the pandemic. In 2022, Jack and Jill Oakland County received more than 25 applications and awarded 15 academic incentive grants totaling $12,000. In 2023, Jack and Jill Oakland County received 29 applications and awarded 10 academic incentive grants totaling $28,000 and contributed $18,000 to the Jack and Jill of America Foundation. Jack and Jill Oakland County continues to be committed to the ongoing positive development of our African American youth and the cultivation of future leaders. As we continue to partner with our mother members and organizations, our goal is to raise academic funding each program year. Mother Members have an opportunity to participate in fun and meaningful fundraising events that may include but are not limited to our signature walkathon, merchandise sales, a private movie screening, and masquerade ball just to name a few.

For many years, the Oakland County Chapter has encouraged participation in the Oratorical competition. We have consistently placed at the regional level. For the 2021-2022 programming year, 3 teens competed and 3 placed at the MI/OH Cluster.

For the 2022-2023 programming year, 2 teens competed and placed 1st and 2nd at the 2022 MI/OH AWD allowing them to move forward to regional competition where Oakland County took home 1st and 2nd place in the Senior category in the Mid-West Region.

Oakland County Chapter Carole Robertson Memorial Day
The Jack and Jill Day Celebration and Carole Robertson Ceremony Committee consisted of Carmen Sutherlin (Chair / Host), Lise-Pauline Barnett, Ayisha Mumin, Lezah Phillips, Stacee Winston, Teniesha Wright-Jones. The Jack & Jill Day Celebration in conjunction with the celebration of Carole Robertson Ceremony is extended to Jack and Jill Oakland County families and prospective new members. Oakland Yard Athletics 5328 Highland Rd, Waterford, MI Sunday, September 17, 2023, 1pm-4pm Our Carole Roberson Day Celebration is held in conjunction with Jack and Jill Day. Group 1 – 5 children presented vision boards of what Carole Robertson could have been if she was able to grow up. Each group child also explained what they wanted to be when growing up through their vision board display. Group 5 teen representatives led the official Jack and Jill ceremony honoring Carole Robertson. The teens set up a beautiful ceremonial table and lit candles in honor of her memory. Each teen recited a part of the ceremony and led the chapter in a reflection on her life and how we can carry on her legacy. The importance of remembering our history and the ongoing need to fight for human rights, civil rights, racial equality, and social justice is as important now as it was in Carole’s day. Carole was a member of her local Jack and Jill teen group in Birmingham, Alabama and was killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing on September 15, 1963. She was 14 years old when she killed at church preparing to march for civil rights with other youth that day.

The theme was “Dreams in Motion” and featured carnival style decorations. JJOC families and guests were able to enjoy many of the activities that Oakland Yard Athletics had onsite including basketball, pickleball, bounce house, soccer, golf, and sand volleyball. We also had organized activities including face painting, sack races, 3-legged race, and a group challenge with a tug-of-war where the winning team members won an Amazon gift card each. Each group participated in programming and Group 5 performed a tribute ceremony honoring Carole Robertson. The event delivered on key programming thrusts (Social, Recreational, Education and Civic), a phenomenal Carole Robertson tribute was delivered by JJOC children.

Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service committee consists of Shaura Robinson (Chair), Mosetta Clay (Co-Chair), Keshayla Harris, Lisa Mendelson, Alexis McDaniel, Tara Pervine, Samm Pryce, and Danielle Waddell. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church 23455 W 9 Mile Rd, Southfield, MI Saturday, January 13, 2024, 9am - 1pm In support of MLK day (day of service) our families will come together to serve others in the community who are in need. The program will kick off by honoring MLK who attended Morehouse College and the contributions he made to America. Our day of service will consist of partnering with New Hope Food Pantry/Kids Against Hunger with the collection of cans good and stuffing Backpacks by filling them with warm winter items to donate to Haven Domestic Violence Shelter and Developing K.I.D.S. We will also incorporate the learning and importance of HBCU by having families participate in various HBCU networking activities that incorporate wearing your favorite HBCU shirt, a mini–College Fair with tables and decorating each table to represent an HBCU.

The Oakland County Chapter will celebrate in a statewide Annual Founder’s Day Brunch hosted by the Motor City Chapter. ‘Uplifting you as you groom the next generation of leaders.’ Oakland County will join mothers across Michigan chapters to uplift, cherish, admire, and love on one another as mothers and members. Marion Stubbs Thomas said, “As mothers, we recognize that Jack and Jill has become a means of furthering an inherent and natural desire to bestow upon our children all the opportunities possible for a normal and graceful approach to a beautiful adulthood.” Jack and Jill’s mothers of Oakland County continue to share the same desire as their visionary founders years later. An elegant Founders’ Day brunch celebration to honor the legacy of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and highlight our mothers and their impact in our Michigan chapters, communities, at home and at work to advance the mission of Jack and Jill.

Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter will host a chapter-wide activity for the 2024 Black Family Day event. The Black Family Day and Senior Recognition committee consists of Brandi Barton (Chair), Malika Penn, Caira Boggs, Arika Ewell, Samm Pryce, Markisha Williams, Angela Mallory and Crystal Roberson. Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History 315 E Warren Ave, Detroit, MI Saturday, May 4, 2024 11am - 3:30pm Black Family Day is a nationally recognized event held annually in May. Our event will include a celebration of our graduating seniors, recognition of out-going mothers, appreciation to our Fathers as well as Groups 1-5 celebrations. Each family will enjoy a family celebration and participate in the end of year celebration. Each child and teen will be recognized for their participation and those moving to a new group will receive special acknowledgement. Special tribute will also take place for our graduating senior. The event will feature graduate display tables, a pod-cast style format for graduates to share their overall experience in Jack and Jill of America, Inc. At the end of the celebration, families will have the opportunity to tour the museum. To encourage each family to reflect and recognize the positive effects of the Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter on its families and community and to lift-up the black family village.

The Jack and Jill Day Celebration and Carole Robertson Ceremony is a national celebration of Jack and Jill every September as established in 1948 under the direction of Dorothy Wright – our first National President – to focus on the family. Mothers, fathers, teens, and children from Groups 1 through Group 5 enjoy this event. In keeping with our theme of Dreams in Motion our Group 1 children were asked, "What are your dreams for the future?". Each child created a visionboard to share. Group 2 presented an illustration of various vision boards that demonstrated the use of sensory and learning with the theme “we’re leaving our imprint on the world”; Group 2 also learned the importance of black history and their contribution as little ones to the world. Each child and teen will be recognized for their participation and those moving to a new group will receive special acknowledgement. Special tribute will also take place for our graduating senior. The event will feature graduate display tables, a pod-cast style format for graduates to share their overall experience in Jack and Jill of America, Inc. At the end of the celebration, families will have the opportunity to tour the museum.

Each child and teen will be recognized for their participation and those moving to a new group will receive special acknowledgement. Special tribute will also take place for our graduating senior. The event will feature graduate display tables, a pod-cast style format for graduates to share their overall experience in Jack and Jill of America, Inc. At the end of the celebration, families will have the opportunity to tour the museum.

Our Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter Associate Jewels consist of our fabulous, graduated mothers who have continued their affiliation with Jack and Jill as an Associate or Life Member. The JJOC Associate Group was established on March 28th, 2000. Our current Chair Saundra Lamb along with Associate Liaison, Sabrina Smith-Campbell work in collaboration to plan a celebration with our associates. The Oakland County Chapter Associate Group currently has 76 members. Iroquois Club 43248 North Woodward Avenue Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Sunday, February 4, 2024 1pm - 4:00pm Associate Appreciation Day is a nationally recognized event held annually in January/February. Our event will include a celebration of our associate moms along with our chapter members. This year’s appreciation of our Associate Jewels will consist of an intimate brunch experience that includes a presentation, sisterly connections, brunch buffet, mimosas, and hustling/line dancing. Each guest will also receive a special token of our appreciation from the chapter. To encourage each mother to reflect and recognize the positive effects of the Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter Associates and what they contribute to the local chapter and community efforts.

Our Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter Fathers’ Auxiliary consist of our fabulous JJOC dads. Our Fathers’ Auxiliary primary objective is to assist with local programming and community service projects along with advocating the needs of the organizational goals. Our recognition event takes place during our National Black Family Day event that aims to celebrate all the major milestones in our chapter for both Moms, Dads, graduating teens, and children. Each family will participate in an end of year celebration. Each of our dads are recognized for their participation and support of our local initiatives such as chaperoning the Teen Parties, Area Workday and TLC and supporting local programming and community service activities of the chapter. The event will highlight events supported, along with the Chapter President and Appointed Father’s Auxiliary Chair giving remarks. To encourage each JJOC family to reflect and recognize the positive effects of the Jack and Jill Oakland County Chapter Father Auxiliary and the impact dads have on our families and community. 44 | P a g e
