design philosophy
断面図や絵をたくさん描き、私たちが暮らす地球 [風景(x-y)、大地(z)、時間(t)]と 地続きの建築をつくることを心がけています。ときには思考を遠くへ投げ、未来に向 けた問いをたて、自然と都市が対立項とならない新しい建築をつくるべく探求してい ます。そこにユーモアとラフさを持って取り組むのが私の設計への向き合い方です。
I draw a lot of cross-sectional drawings, and try to create architecture that is continuous with the earth [landscape(x-y), land(z), time(t)]. Sometimes I cast my thoughts far into the distance, ask questions for the future, and I want to create new architecture in which nature and city are not opposed to each other. My approach to design is to work on it with humor and kind of roughness.

都市の一生
大阪市のとりわけ西部地域には、都市の発展を支え現代になり役目を終えたインフ ラが手付かずのまま残されていることが多い。戦後の土地区画整理事業の施行範囲 外となった港区の市岡地域には、その当時から続く暮らしの痕跡を纏う非道路や文 化住宅や問屋街などが集積している。これらを消滅させて都市は何を目指すか。
Lifetime of a City
In Osaka City, particularly in the western area, there are many infrastructures that supported the city’s development and that have outlived their usefulness recently, but they remain untouched. The Ichioka area of Minato Ward, which was not included in the postwar land readjustment project, is home to a concentration of non-road areas, worker’s housing, and wholesale districts that still bear traces of life from those times. Wouldn’t the history of the city be lost if these were to be destroyed?

ここには寂れた商店街、貨物線路跡地、瓦倉庫群、廃工 場、文化住宅、嵩上げによる高低差、防潮堤など、都市 の発展過程を読み解く手掛かりがある。
Here you can find clues to understanding the city’s development, such as a deserted shopping street, the former site of a freight railway line, a group of warehouses for storing roofing tiles, abandoned factories, worker’s housing, elevation differences due to raised ground, and tide embankment.
土没都市
都市から排出される残土や建築解体時の瓦礫を都市へ再び還していくことで、都市の中に もう一つの都市を出現させる。大阪市の港区にある周辺より2m程度低い凹地に長い年月 をかけて土を入れていきながら、土と建築、都市の状態変化を考える。部屋単位、建築単 位、都市単位で段階的に入り込んで来る半制御可能な存在である土は、現代の都市に、近 代都市が排除してきた人間の根源的な暮らしと他生物も含めた都市生態系を構築する。既 存地表面以上新地表面以下の土の世界に建築の構造体と生態系を支える土壌をつくり、ま た、都市の暮らしの痕跡を土中に埋蔵していく。建築解体残土の有機物は生命の養分とし て、無機物は構造を支えるものとして使い尽くされていく。生活者は生活の最中から入っ てくる土に対して生態系の一部として創造力をはたらかせながら暮らしを存続させ、減築 されていく建物は徐々に外部環境に晒されながら土の構造体へと重心を移し、新たな敷地 境界を描き出していく。そして建設と破壊は常に表裏一体であり、天災と人災が続く限り、 土没都市は少しずつ拡大し続ける。つまり、そこに最終形態は存在しない。私たちは、本 来持つ想像力と創造力をもってして、この地球上で生き続けるのだ。
Never Ending Soil City
By returning the waste soil and debris from demolition of buildings back to the city, another city will appear within the city. As soil is poured into a depression in Minato-ku, Osaka, about 2m lower than the surrounding area over a long period of time, we consider the changes in the state of soil, architecture, and the city. The soil, which is a semi-controllable entity gradually infiltrates into modern cities on a room-by-room, building-by-building, and city-by-city basis, will build an urban ecosystem that includes the fundamental human lifestyle and other living things that modern cities have eliminated. In the world of soil between the existing ground surface and the new ground surface, we will create soil that supports the architectural structures and ecosystem, and also bury traces of urban life in the soil. The organic matter of the waste soil from demolition of buildings will be used up as nutrients for life, and the inorganic matter will be used up as support for the structure. Residents will continue to live their lives by exercising their creativity as part of the ecosystem in the soil that is being brought in during their daily lives, and the buildings that are being demolished will gradually shift their center of gravity to the soil structures as they are exposed to the external environment, and a new site boundary will be drawn. Furthermore, construction and destruction are always two sides of the same coin, and as long as natural and man-made disasters continue, this city will continue to expand little by little. In other words, there is no final form for it. We will continue to live on the Earth using our intrinsic imagination and creativity.

都市の“単位”
都市には様々なスケールの単位が存在する。商店街、バス通り、コリアンタウン、 緩衝緑地などのあるまとまりには、それらを形成するいくつかの要素がある。ここ
で取り上げた単位は一つは堤防空間で、土木構築物を含めた集合体として設計する。
既存の瓦問屋街という単位は倉庫と事務所という下位のレイヤーにもう一つの単位 がある。それを舟屋に見られるような「職住単位」と読み替えて設計に組み込む。
“Unit”and“Form”in the City
There are units of various scales in a city such as shopping streets, bus routes, Koreantowns, and buffer green spaces. There are several elements that make up certain units. One of the units I have looked at here is the river embankment space, which needs to be designed as a collection that includes civil engineering structures. The existing tile wholesale district has another unit: ‘warehouses and offices’ that belongs to a lower layer. I have interpreted this as“work-dwelling unit” like those found in boathouses and incorporated it into the design.

大阪市内で解体された建築部材がスポリアされ、川を通じて船で運ばれ、既存の建 物を補強しながら舞台装置がつくられる。大阪にかつて存在した商工業的な河川空 間に新しい公共空間の風景を継ぎ足していく。
Theatre Troupe Performing the Transformation of the City
Building materials dismantled in Osaka city are spoliated and transported by boat through the river to create a stage set while reinforcing the existing buildings. A new public space is added to the commercial and industrial river space that once existed in Osaka.
道路側からの立面 ｜ Facade from the road side｜
野外劇場 稽古場 寄宿舎
かつては水都と呼ばれ、河川沿いにはたくさんの問屋街が形成された。そのうちの一つである 尻無川右岸の瓦問屋街。高さ5.2mの防潮堤によって瓦倉庫と事務所が分断され、活用されな いまま取り残された既存不適格の木造倉庫が堤外に立ち並ぶ。それらを縫合するように土木・ 建築の幾つかを設計する。
This area was once known as the Water City, and many wholesale districts were formed along the rivers. One of these is the tile wholesale district on the right bank of the Shirinashi River. A 5.2m-high seawall separates the tile warehouses from the offices, and the unused, unsuitable existing wooden warehouses stand outside the bank. We designed several civil engineering and architectural structures to stitch these together.
土木の更新履歴
河川の防潮堤のような土木構築物が新設される時はふつう古いものを取り壊さず継ぎ足し ていくことが多い。止水ラインの変化と暮らしの変化が連動するこの場所で、堤内外の新 しい関係を築くとき、土木構築物の振る舞いのように歴史と地続きな建築を作れないかと 考えた。
Civil Engineering Update History
When civil engineering structures such as river embankments are newly constructed, the old ones are not usually demolished, but rather new ones are added in their place. In this place, where changes in the water line and changes in life are linked, we wondered if we could create a building that is continuous with history, just like the behavior of civil engineering structures, when building a new relationship between the inside and outside of the embankment.

まちの回遊性をさらに高めるようにして空いた 敷地に道的な性質を残しながらつくる小さな アーティストインレジデンス。

This is a small artist-in-residence project built on a vacant lot, preserving the qualities of a road, in order to further increase the walkability of the town.

新旧の対話
大阪という都市は第二次世界大戦の空襲 でまちの大半を消失した過去がある。大 阪最大の繁華街・梅田のすぐ近くにある 中崎町はそんな中かつての形を留めたま ま取り残された密集住宅街で、近年、古 い民家を改修して新しいお店がつくられ 始めている。
Dialogue between Old and New
The city of Osaka has a history in which much of the city was destroyed in air raids during World War II. Nakazakicho, located close to Umeda, Osaka’s largest downtown area, is a densely populated residential area that has retained much of its former appearance, and in recent years new shops have begun to be built by renovating old houses.
遊歩者の都市建築
店から離れた路上に置かれた立て看板が 視線を掴み、まちを彷徨う人々を路地の 奥へと誘う。家が消失してできた都市の 隙間に、そんな立ち姿で建築をつくれな いかと考えた。
Architecture for Flaneur
A signboard placed on the street away from the store catches the eye, inviting people wandering through the town deeper into the alley. I wanted to create a building with this kind of appearance in the gap created in the city where houses have disappeared.

道幅が狭く車の往来が少ない中崎町では、道に物が雑多に置かれている寛容な風景がある。このまちを特 徴づけている高さ1m以下の世界にもう少し意識が向けられるような断面的な操作を建築に施す。
Nakazakicho has narrow streets and little traffic, creating a tolerant landscape of various objects placed on the road. The architecture will be designed with crosssectional manipulation to draw attention to the world of less than 1m in height, which characterizes this town.
This is NOT a cross-sectional model.
