Ivanhoe Grammar School is immensely proud of our Class of 2017 and their achievements in their final year of secondary school. In addition to all the wonderful co-curricular and community service accomplishments during the year, our VCE and International Baccalaureate (IB) students have again produced another strong set of academic results. Students studied hard and approached their Year 12 exams with dedication and commitment.

As an open-entry school, students of all abilities are a part of our School community. GOOD GLOBAL CITIZENS IVANHOE DIPLOMA The Ivanhoe Diploma is a voluntary Senior Years’ program recognising an individual student’s contribution to the cocurricular life of the school. Students engage in a range of self-selected learning experiences across five areas of expertise: action, civic, engagement, creativity, inter-cultural understanding and leadership. The Ivanhoe Diploma is awarded in addition to VCE or IB and recognises that lived experiences and commitment are highly desirable qualities tertiary institutions and employers are looking for in young people.

The Class of 2017 helped more than 40 charities during their time at Ivanhoe Grammar School, on multiple occasions.
Students from the Class of 2017 were involved in over 10 formal committees including the: • Charities Committee • Environmental Committee • Round Square Committee • Tertiary Futures Committee • and numerous Year 12 Committees
Almost two thirds of the Class of 2017 were involved in our Cadet Program at some time during their Senior Years. Our Cadet Program is a platform for senior students to exercise leadership, communication and survival skills.

She gained this insight and self-awareness by volunteering at her local mosque and tutoring younger students. Aisha’s advice for Year 12s is to try to choose subjects you enjoy but if you don’t, use positive psychology to convince yourself you do. “Tell yourself you love a subject, even if you don’t. Get really interested in it and research it outside the curriculum until you really do love it!”

Academic results are important, but what we strive for is our students graduating as young women and men of character; women and men who are courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate. An Ivanhoe Learner has these attributes and is committed to a life of enquiry and learning, from each other and the world around them.
THOMAS CURRIE Thomas was offered a place in the Musical Theatre Course at Queensland Conservatorium. The audition process was rigorous and confronting, but his acceptance into this prestigious program is made all the more exemplary because the Conservatorium very rarely accepts students on their first audition straight from secondary school. Thomas thoroughly researched his tertiary options in the Performing Arts and decided that the Queensland Conservatorium was his ultimate choice but knowing how competitive the selection process is, he shortlisted a number of options. Because of the intense nature of the audition process and the specific requirements of each institution, Thomas knew that he could only reasonably commit to one audition while completing Year 12, and he dedicated himself to extensive extracurricular training in voice, dance and drama. Throughout his time at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Thomas’ curricular and co-curricular activities allowed him to explore and hone his skills – particularly his involvement in school productions. When innate talent meets hard work and dedication, the results speak for themselves.

Emma was offered her first preference: a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business at La Trobe University through the Aspire Program. But between graduating from Year 12 and starting her degree, she also travelled to Utah on a Victorian Institute of Sport Scholarship as part of the Australian Aerial Skiing Development Team. Who else can say they spent their summer holidays preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympics?
Liam will be studying a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne and is also currently working with SpinChat: an initiative of Independence Australia that aims to educate secondary students to prevent and manage spinal cord injury.
Emma’s resilience and dedication is apparent; a former gymnast, she was sidelined by a nasty wrist injury which forced her to change course. Coaches suggested she try aerial-skiing and in just three short years she has taken a setback and turned it into an elite sporting opportunity. But she made sure that the opportunity wasn’t in conflict with her desire to study, and she balanced both offers seamlessly, returning from the development training just in time for Orientation Week at La Trobe.
Liam has been tinkering in tech since he was a toddler, and in Year 11 and 12 he pushed the boundaries of his learning experience by undertaking the University of Melbourne Extension Program (UMEP) where he studied university-level units in Physical Science and Technology and passed with Honours. At the start of Year 12, he developed a student timetabling app called Ivanhoe Today. He presented the idea to Steve Brophy, our Director of ICT, with the view of turning it into a communication hub and student bulletin board. The work was so exceptional that Steve put him in touch with SpinChat, where he has spent the summer holidays working on a new app. Liam has big dreams, and hopes to one day work on the space program that takes us to Mars and beyond.
EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS Congratulations to our top achievers: our School Dux, Dux of VCE at each campus and our IB Dux. For these students their dedication and hard work was realised with exceptional results. Kevin Mao’s ATAR and Christopher Neophitou’s ATAR places them both in the top 1% of the State. Amelia Upperton’s and Will Smith’s IB score places them both in the top 0.3% of the State’s IB graduates. This is a significant achievement for each of these students and we wish them all the best in their chosen tertiary studies.
