After another year of disruptions to school life due to COVID-19, our community has once again shone through. There is no doubt in my mind that the reputation of the School has been enhanced during this time due to the outstanding efforts and professionalism of the staff. While we are well rehearsed at moving to online learning, the staff commitment and care for our students has been exemplary. This has also been a difficult time for our students and parents at all year levels. However, their resilience and the character they have displayed is a real credit to them and their families. In recent times, I have reflected on what it means to be an Ivanarian. Being a member of the Ivanhoe Grammar School community is not simply a series of transitions – get up, go to school, attend sport, attend music rehearsal, attend cadets, sit in the café and go home. Rather, attending Ivanhoe Grammar School is an experience. It is a way of being. It is about connection. Having great friends. Caring for each other. It is about being an Ivanhoe Learner and having a long list of happy memories. The Class of 2021 describe it as ‘The Ivy Feeling’. This somewhat intangible, but really important connection to the School, has been a core part of the Ivanhoe experience since our inception in 1915. It is what makes our School ‘tick’ and due to the strength of character of the Class of 2021, it continues to be as strong as it ever has been.
• The launch of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s First Nations Scholarship Program • The introduction of a school-wide systematic Academic Enrichment Program • Continued progress on the Sports and Aquatic Centre, which we envisage will be completed by the end of this year • Strengthening of our ‘One School, One Philosophy, One Standard Mantra’ • The development of a Sustainability Plan as we move towards being a carbon neutral school, including, we believe, our School having the most solar energy of any school in Australia • Other capital projects that have either commenced or are planned include a new café at the Plenty Campus, a new playground in Buckley House, and major improvements to our facilities at Chelsworth Park. FIRST NATIONS SCHOLARSHIP
First Nations Scholarship – let the journey begin Our Principal, Gerard Foley, proudly announced the launch of the First Nations Scholarship Program at Ivanhoe Grammar School during Term 4. This program has been three years in the making. From 2022, the Ivanhoe Grammar School First Nations Scholarship will provide the opportunity for a number of Indigenous students to attend our School, in many cases providing an education that would not normally be available to them. As a school, we have developed our Reconciliation Action Plan, our continual Acknowledgement of Country and the ongoing recognition of First Nations people and culture as a way of enriching all our lives. Providing educational opportunities for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students interested in attending our school, is our next step. Director of Co-Curricular Learning and the Chair of our Reconciliation Action Plan Committee, Chris Branigan, has been integral to making the First Nations Scholarship Program a reality. ‘Ivanhoe Grammar School respects, honours and appreciates the diversity,
culture and lessons that can be learned from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. As such, we are pleased to have partnered with the Aborigines Advancement League to initiate the unique First Nations Scholarship Program.’ What makes this program unique is that Indigenous students will be residing at the Gladys Nicholls Hostel in Northcote (see photo above) under the direct care of Aboriginal hostel parents Andrew and Cara Taylor who operate the facility. Andrew and Cara, photographed below with their two children, know how important it is to create a safe and secure family environment for students, a home away from home.
Benefits of the scholarship program to the selected First Nations students include: • Tuition fees • Residence at the Lady Gladys Nicholls Hostel • Approved co-curricular activities and camp fees • Education materials • School uniforms Over the years, thanks to the generous support of a number of benefactors, many deserving students have been able to experience an Ivanhoe education, grasping the opportunity with both hands. We anticipate that our First Nations Scholars will embrace Ivanhoe Grammar School and all that we offer. Over coming months more details will be provided on how the Ivanhoe Community can become involved in the most proactive ways to support the First Nations Scholarship Program. ALUMNI IN THE MEDIA Ivanhoe Grammar School has produced numerous journalists, authors and, in particular, television identities. In many cases, their faces may be familiar and their names well-known, but what is less understood is how our alumni who are currently working in front of the camera made the transition from Ivanhoe Grammar School to our television screens. In the last edition of the Brown and White, in our section on Alumni News, we highlighted the career of Lana Murphy (’10) and her highprofile role with Channel 9 News. In this edition we present some other alumni, in Australia and abroad, who have become more prominent in recent years.
Brisbane, as well as Producer for Drive at 3AW for Steve Price and Nightline with Derryn Hinch. He also had a short stint as Producer with Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton. From 2004 to 2013, Paul worked with Southern Cross Austereo in Melbourne and Sydney as Executive Producer on high ranking programs including the Matt and Jo Show (Fox FM), The Shebang (Melbourne) and the Kyle and Jackie O Show (2Day FM). For the past eight years, Paul has been breaking major stories with Seven News. His reporting has taken him right on to the frontline and during a recent antivax demonstration in Melbourne, he was verbally and physically attacked by angry protestors, though fortunately not seriously injured. Despite this targeting of the media, Paul still enjoys the challenges of news reporting. Paul is a keen amateur photographer and, paradoxically, he is also a lover of fitness and burgers.
Fluent in English and Italian, and with passable Spanish and Japanese, Adriano has television experience, across Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia. He was voted Australia’s Young Football Writer of the Year in 2012 and was a finalist in the FFDU (Football Fans Down Under) Awards for Australia’s Football Writer of the Year in 2013. Since then, Adriano has covered many of the world’s biggest sporting events including three FIFA World Cups and numerous tennis grand slam tournaments. He has also interviewed some of the world’s biggest sporting stars including Lionel Messi, Jose Mourinho, Serena Williams and Valentino Rossi among others. At the 2019 FIFA Best Footballer Awards, Adriano had the honour of hosting the Green Carpet Show in Milan’s renowned Piazza della Scala, surrounded by the world’s best footballers. Adriano can currently be seen on ESPN, beIN Sports, Sony Sports India, SuperSport, FOX Sports Asia and Optus Sport, as well as a host at key sports events across the globe.
Paul Dowsley (’90) Reporter, 7News Melbourne With more than 25 years’ experience in news journalism and media, Paul Dowsley has worked extensively in radio, newspapers and television in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. While still at school, Paul demonstrated a strong news sense, undertaking extensive work experience across various media including The Sun, 3AW, ABC and Network 10 where, among other compliments, it was noted that ‘Paul displayed a maturity and enthusiasm beyond his years … his news sense was excellent and his thirst for information, unquenchable’. One of the key requirements of any journalist is the capacity to listen, enquire and learn, and Paul displayed all those attributes well before leaving school. After leaving Ivanhoe Grammar School, Paul worked as a journalist with the Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun for eight years, before moving to Southern Cross Radio. During this time, he worked as Program Director for 4BC 4

Adriano Del Monte (’06) ESPN Correspondent, Milan Adriano Del Monte may not be so
well known to Australian viewers, but from a sports journalism perspective, his role is one of the most prominent of all our alumni. Based in Milan, one of the world’s most glamourous locations, Adriano reports daily on major sporting events. After school, Adriano completed a Bachelor of Arts (Media/ Communications) degree at The University of Melbourne, before spending 2010 in South Africa reporting from the FIFA World Cup as a 21-year-old. He was later accepted into multiple internships in the United Kingdom, where he had the good fortune to spend time with ESPN, Sky Sports, The Guardian and other major media organisations.
Josh Ribarich (’08) Reporter, 7 News Gold Coast Following completion of his VCE, Josh Ribarich headed straight to The University of Melbourne to complete his Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Italian and English Literature, before commencing a Masters of Journalism in 2013. Since then, he has worked extensively in both regional and capital cities, much of it with the Channel 7 Network. Josh’s love for English during his school days set the tone for his eventual career path. His teachers nurtured that passion, particularly his Year 10 English Teacher, Denise Whelan, who ignited the passion for
ALUMNI IN THE MEDIA journalism in Josh. His determination to apply himself at university and focus on his career choice were key to him eventually getting into the industry. His first journalism job was in regional Victoria with the Kyabram Free Press. From there, Josh moved to Canberra where he entered the television world, learning how to write for TV broadcasts. This was followed by his first reporting role for Prime7 in Albury, where Josh spent four years, which included working freelance with 7News in Melbourne on weekends, requiring many hours of travel each weekend. Clearly, a career in journalism requires a strong and determined commitment, and Josh attributes his own work ethic to his final years at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Reporting on a wide range of issues has been personally challenging yet incredibly meaningful for him. Stories ranging from the 2020 bushfires, to people facing deportation, and more recently, the pandemic, have all provided great highlights and rewards. Josh clearly loves his job and the very nature of journalism, which brings a different story every day. In April this year, he accepted a full-time position for 7News on the Gold Coast. While he hopes to return to Melbourne eventually, Josh is currently enjoying the sunshine and the lifestyle up North.
A self-confessed football fanatic, Nick played a few games for the Port Magpies, as well as many seasons with Old Ivanhoe Grammarians in the VAFA. Ironically it was a football injury while playing for Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 2004 that kick-started Nick’s passion for sports media. While recovering from a back injury, he began his career in radio broadcasting with Adelaide’s Life FM covering SANFL matches and fell in love with talking and writing about the game. Nick made his move into television in 2008, accepting a job at WIN News in Gippsland, while playing VFL football with Geelong. After spending a year in the country, he accepted a job at Melbourne’s leading talk radio station 3AW working in the newsroom, calling football and producing the Sport Show for two years. In 2011, Nick returned to television and joined 10 News First in Melbourne. After three years, Nick transferred to Adelaide as the senior sport reporter for Adelaide’s 10 News First, and in June 2014 he was appointed as Sport Presenter, joining Rebecca Morse at the news desk. Nick was recognised for his coverage of the AFL’s inaugural match in China in 2017, winning the South Australian Media Award for All Media – Coverage of Sport in 2018. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to attend the ceremony in person as he was at the Gold Coast calling a football match, but he did the next best thing and kept track of the awards ceremony via Facetime. In 2019, he returned to Network 10 in Melbourne where, in addition to his television duties, he is a regular sports commentator on 3AW.
Nick Butler (’00) Sports Presenter/Reporter, Network 10, Melbourne Nick Butler has been a prominent face on Victorian and South Australian television with Network 10 for many years. Nick has become a high profile sports presenter, commentator and reporter, largely focusing on football.
Together with his mate Dylan Buckley (’11), Nick brings AFL football back to Network 10, co-hosting a program called Teams on 10, which takes the game’s biggest stars to some weird and wonderful places.
Dylan Buckley (’11) Podcasts, Media Production, TV Host, Melbourne While his football career may not have fully emulated that of his famous father Jim, Dylan Buckley is rapidly making his name within media circles in Melbourne, particularly though his podcast ‘Dyl and Friends’. Dylan was drafted to Carlton under the father-son rule where he debuted in 2013. He was added to the club for his forward pressure and ability to play down back. In 2017, after 39 games for the club and a Rising Star Nomination in 2014, Dylan was delisted by Carlton. He was later selected by Greater Western Sydney via the rookie draft where he played a further two games before retiring after the 2019 season. Throughout his time as a professional footballer, Dylan continued with study and volunteer work, as well as thinking about life after football.. His podcast, Dyl and Friends, in which he speaks to various people including AFL players, mentors and coaches began during his time with the Giants. This podcast has grown to over 100 episodes and allows listeners to hear the real story behind many of his guests. Since that initial podcast, Dylan’s media presence has grown substantially. He has co-hosted ‘Teams on 10’ with Nick Butler for the past two AFL seasons and regularly co-hosts radio segments on RSN and 3AW. Along with his media profile, Dylan’s Instagram community has also grown and he now has over 62,000 followers. And, if all that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Dylan has also found time to create ‘Producey’, an independent media company.

Lucas has always had a passion for reciting sporting statistics but admits his ‘skill’ may have been unwelcome in many situations at school!
Daniel Gassin has taken his unique brand of jazz to the international stage and is receiving rave reviews! His latest album, ‘Change of Heart’, was recorded with The Daniel Gassin Crossover Band, and was released earlier this year on the Jazz Family label.
In addition to Dr Zac Dowker running his own private chiropractic clinic in Viewbank, he has recently launched, alongside his wife Fleur, a new children’s footwear brand called Pop and Weasel.
It seems fitting that decades later he has co-authored a book ‘Be My Guest – Football Superstars in Australia’, which highlights the story behind international superstars of soccer who have played for a time in Australia. The book starts with the incredible tale of Alex ‘Sandy’ Young, one of Everton’s most prolific goal scorers, who settled in Tongala in country Victoria in 1914. More familiar names in the book include Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Trevor Francis, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Moore, Ray Clemence and Paul Mariner. A labour of love for Lucas, the book recounts what was involved in bringing these players to Australia, and how the players, clubs, fans and competition benefited. Furthermore, it examines the simple but often flawed logic that bringing football superstars to Australia would provide a turbo boost to Australia’s domestic football competition. Lucas wrote ‘Be My Guest’ at his desk during the lockdown of 2020 while juggling his fulltime job in marketing and his four-year old daughter Darby, who never quite believed his claim that ‘dad was writing a story’. Today Lucas balances work, remote learning and the pressing needs of Darby and his second daughter, Tully, who was born in July. Perhaps some day, his daughters will be willing to join Lucas watching the Champions League Finals on television at 5am, but he doesn’t hold much hope! Daniel’s journey to international acclaim has included being a finalist in the Jazz Solo Piano Competition at the iconic Montreux Jazz Festival in 2007, reaching the final three at the Australian National Jazz Awards in 2013, and being nominated for the prestigious Freedman Fellowship for Australian musicians in 2016. His recordings include ‘Crossover’ in 2008 for ABC Jazztrack, and the Daniel Gassin Sextet’s debut album released in 2011 was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the Australian Independent Music Awards in 2012. The track ‘Banff Song’ from this album earning a nomination at the Jazz Bell Awards for Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year. Since his move to France in 2013, Daniel has added an international dimension to his career and become an integral part of the Paris jazz scene. He has also toured extensively including in 2016, becoming the first pianist to perform at Quincy Jones’ new club in Dubaï, and completing a five-concert tour of Sweden with his Trio. In 2018, Daniel toured Burkina Faso, Angola, Mauritius and the Seychelles as part of US State Department tours conducted by its Africa Regional Services program. Daniel’s other credits include an appearance in the 2020 Netflix series ‘The Eddy’, and playing, touring and performing with many of the world’s finest jazz musicians.
Zac and Fleur saw a market opportunity for children’s footwear with a creative edge. Their first collection was inspired by the belief that every child is led by their imagination. Jordan O’Neill (’07) High Energy Events Despite the effects of six lockdowns on his business, Jordan O’Neill is continuing to generate huge interest in his O2 Events company. After many years working with Fairfax Limited, managing their events and entertainment sector, Jordan established O2 Events in June 2019. The company now manages a range of high profile cycling, triathlon and other sporting events including the 2XU Wellness Run, the Melbourne Teams Triathlon, Amy’s Great Ocean Road Gran Fondo, Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride, the Alpine Classic and the 2XU Triathlon Series. The 2XU Triathlon Series is Victoria’s premier and most popular triathlon series providing first timers, tri-kids, age groupers and elites with high quality, safe events with an exciting and fun atmosphere. Earlier this month, Jordan and his team at O2 Events, which includes many Ivanhoe Grammar School alumni, organised the 2XU Wellness Run/Walk at Catani Gardens in St Kilda. The 1km, 5km, 10km, and half marathon events raised funds for the Beyond Blue Foundation specifically its 24x7 Support Services.
Elly McInerney (’19), who was Captain of our back-to-back AGSV champion Volleyball team in 2018 and 2019, is currently studying at Polk State College in Florida on a Volleyball Sports Scholarship. We look forward to a feature article covering Elly’s sporting career in a future edition of the Brown and White.
Stephanie Eshak (’08) is certainly making her mark in the sporting world, and recently celebrated 10 years working in various administration and leadership roles with Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria. Stephanie completed a Bachelor of Business at La Trobe University during which time she was also Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Tennis and Netball Coach. Stephanie is now studying a Master of Business in Sports Management at Deakin University. One of Melbourne’s best-known saxophonists and highly recognisable television and radio performers is Wilbur Wilde, aka Nick Aitken (’72). Wilbur recently featured on the ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ 50th Anniversary Special, which in its day was one of the most iconic shows in Australian television. Wilbur was a regular on the show from 1984 to 1999. Wilbur’s other recent claim to fame was his role in developing the Australian Government’s ‘Get a Jab’ campaign in response to the pandemic.
The recently launched Old Ivanhoe Grammarians website (www. oldivanhoe.com) is receiving great feedback from readers. As well as the latest alumni news and forthcoming events, it offers a Business Directory which provides an opportunity to reach an engaged and extensive alumni group, list your jobs and business opportunities on the OIGA website. The Subtle Asian Traits (SAT) group was co-founded by alumni Angela Kang (’14), her brother Kerry Kang (’18), friends Tony and Anny Xie (’18), and Lydia Jiang (’18). SAT has been nominated for the Facebook Community Award under the ‘Identity’ Category, which is another great achievement for these social media giants whose on-line community now has approximately 2 million members. Despite the interruptions to most sports over the past two years, the cricket season has commenced and is expected to be completed with a full schedule of matches. Since its inaugural 1989/90 season, the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Cricket Club (OIGCC) has built an exciting reputation, winning numerous trophies including a premiership last season. OIGCC currently fields two senior sides and two junior sides and warmly welcomes new players, sponsors and supporters down to the clubrooms at Chelsworth Park.

The Judo Club Any student who attended the Ridgeway Campus between 1955 and 1991 would have noticed groups of white-suited boys who comprised the Ivanhoe Grammar School Judo Club. Complete with calls of Ippon from the instructors, screams from boys and the slaps of bodies hitting the mat, judo became one of the School’s longest serving sports.
What is Judo? Judo (‘the gentle way’) was founded by Jigoro Kano, a Japanese martial artist who adapted techniques from Jujitsu to create a distinctive competition-based sport with the aim being to throw one’s opponent onto their back, to hold them down or to apply a submission.

Denis Dwyer The inspiration for our Judo Club was Art teacher Mr Denis Dwyer. Ivanhoe Grammar School became the first school in Victoria to introduce judo in 1955, after enthusiastic senior boys went for judo lessons to the Hawthorn Boys Club, where Mr Dwyer was the founder and instructor for their club. Known affectionately to all students as ‘Dwop’, Mr Dwyer was an Ivanhoe staff member from 1953 to 1978. He bought a rich and varied experience to the School, being a former student of renowned Australian artists Max Meldrum and Justus Jorgensen, and a graduate of the National Gallery Art School. He was also an occasional
timber cutter, an explosives inspector and a World War 2 veteran who saw action in Papua New Guinea. Following his war service, Mr Dwyer returned to Melbourne to complete his Diploma of Fine Arts. The role and importance of art grew under his leadership, and by the time he retired in 1978, our Art complex included facilities for drawing, pottery, painting, sculpture, screen-printing and craft. However, his particular love of judo, which inspired hundreds of boys, was Mr Dwyer’s special legacy. He began teaching judo when it was scarcely known or accepted, continuing to do so for four afternoons each week, three terms a year, for 25 years!

The Final Years
Following his retirement from Ivanhoe Grammar School in 1978, old habits were hard to extinguish and he went on to run another judo club at St Andrews on Saturdays!
Judo Training In the early days, great consternation was shown by onlookers as the boys sprang high in the air only to come crashing down, some gracefully, onto a tarpaulin spread out on the ground near the new Junior Art room. This, of course, was judo practice and bouncing off the ground was necessary to fall correctly in the art of judo. Judo was introduced at the School at a time when it was believed that children would not grasp the skills and techniques required. However, increasing interest in judo and the reputation of our Judo Club, inspired the formation of many other junior clubs around Melbourne and in numerous schools.
Publicity and Growth In the early years, the Judo Club received considerable publicity through open air demonstrations around Melbourne and featured twice on television; one being a direct telecast from our clubrooms and the other a broadcast from the Japanese consulate at Rippon Lea. Radio Australia also broadcast a running commentary of the club in action, and other displays took place at both the Collingwood Town Hall and the Hawthorn Town Hall in the early 1960s. State Championships followed and our Club participated with great success. By 1967, the Club had 120 members, and judo continued its popularity for the next two decades. In 1983, there were approximately 135 boys doing judo ranging in age from six to seventeen, and our Club competed at tournaments
Having been located in many temporary judo rooms in the early years, ranging from the old change rooms in Locksley House, to the old senior dormitory in Sherwood House, the club finally gained its own brand new judo rooms in 1972 in the John Benson Physical Education Centre. In 1975, David Atkinson (‘68), an Ivanhoe Grammar School alumnus and one of Mr Dwyer’s former pupils, became a member of staff. Between 1975 and 1978, both jointly ran the Judo Club. Following Mr Dwyer’s retirement in 1978, Mr Atkinson accepted sole responsibility for judo instruction. This continued until 1986, after which John Hellawell, a middle school teacher who had previously taught judo in the UK and other parts of Australia, joined the team and with Mr Atkinson, ran the club in tandem. Both Mr Atkinson and Mr Hellawell remained Masters in Charge of judo until 1991 when it ceased as an activity at Ivanhoe Grammar School after 37 years. At that time, new State Government regulations classed judo as a martial art, and the required additional instructor training was considered beyond the resources of the School. The demise of the Judo Club left many boys disappointed, particularly the 60 students engaged in judo that year. However, numerous other local judo clubs had been established by this time and many boys were able to continue their judo training outside of school. Judo was an important sport at Ivanhoe Grammar School and Denis Dwyer’s dedication and perseverance made our judo club a strong and notable institution. Past students recall Mr Dwyer with great affection, both for the challenges he set for them, as well as his quiet and caring nature. Denis Dwyer passed away in 1986.

2021 Art and Design Awards Despite some of the online learning challenges faced this year, 2021 has seen the creation of outstanding art and design works by students at each Campus. The quality of student work was on display through exhibitions at both the Plenty Campus and The Ridgeway Campus. As always, Randal Marsh (’77) was a major supporter of our exhibitions and the prizes awarded included: • Randal Marsh Art and Design Award 1st Place – Kevin Fu (TRC, see his winning entry top left) and Zac McCormack (Plenty Campus) • Randal Marsh Art and Design Award 2nd Place – Carolina Cocchis (TRC) and Matilda Williams (Plenty Campus) • Randal Marsh Art and Design Acquisition award – Kevin Fu (TRC) and Alfred Salominsson (Plenty Campus) • The Centenary Product Design and Technology Award – Sam Griffiths (TRC) Each year, the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association provides an Encouragement Award at each Campus, with the recipients in 2021 being: • Rosie Pettenon (TRC) whose painting was used as the promotional poster for the exhibition (Rosie is pictured top right with her artwork) • Claudia Figgins (Plenty Campus) pictured with her entry, left.

OIGA Centenary Scholarship As part of the centenary celebrations of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association (OIGA) in 2020, the OIGA Centenary Scholarship was launched.
Farewell to the Class of 2021 At the time of going to print, the Class of 2021 has completed their examinations and collectively are relaxing while waiting for their VCE or IB results to arrive. Regardless of their ‘score’, Ivanhoe Grammar School is immensely proud of our Class of 2021, who endured pandemic-related disruptions during most of their last two years of secondary education. During their ‘Toast to the Class of 2021’, our School Captains demonstrated why we should be so proud with some their key themes being: • We have risen well above the circumstances we face, and we are about to graduate from Ivanhoe Grammar School as united and determined young people of great character • Our teachers, who put so much effort into our wellbeing, keeping lessons interesting, and motivating us to get through these tumultuous times cannot be thanked enough • These years at Ivanhoe Grammar School have shaped who we are today, and will form the foundation of who we become tomorrow • All the hardships, joyous moments, confusing times, whether online or in person, have been achieved and overcome together.
This scholarship provides an opportunity for an outstanding young person, who would not otherwise be able to attend our School, to have the benefit of an Ivanhoe education. Our current OIGA Centenary Scholar, now in their second year at our School, has recently written to the President of the OIGA, Wayne Vanderwert (’89). In the letter, our scholar expresses gratitude for the opportunities that the scholarship has provided, and admiration for how Ivanhoe Grammar School has adapted to the challenges of the last two years. ‘I am proud to be a student at Ivanhoe Grammar School and have noticed the benefits of going to this particular school. During COVID, the teachers have been very organised when required to quickly move to online learning. I like that the School really cares about the wellbeing of all of the students and that they are trying to support us through this tough time as much as possible. Again I am extremely thankful that you have sponsored my scholarship because the opportunities at Ivanhoe Grammar School are amazing.’
Hatched and matched! There have been some very positive outcomes from the recent lockdowns! • Georgia Newland (‘13) and Callum Matheson (‘12) recently announced their engagement and as you can see from the above photograph, they are very pleased to show off the proof! • The Ivanhoe Grammar School family congratulates the following couples on the safe arrival of their babies: – Brenton Aisbett (’10) and wife Roxanne Kalivas (’10) welcomed their first child, Nicholas Constantine, in October – Rhyan Straney (’97) and wife Rachel welcomed their third child, Oliver, in August – Karli Mooy (’06), nee Burns, and husband Adam welcomed their daughter, Elodie Joyce, photographed below, in September. Funding for the OIGA Centenary Scholarship is provided by alumni and other donors, as well as direct contributions from the OIGA. We hope to build the OIGA Centenary Scholarship corpus so that it is selffunding by the end of the decade, and able to support the education of outstanding young scholars for generations to come.

LIVING TREASURES Living treasures
One of the features of the annual Buckley Boys / Brown Era Chapel Service and Luncheon has been the presentation of awards by the Principal to those who have achieved age milestones during the year. Unfortunately, we have not been able to schedule this event for the past two years as a result of the pandemic. But we have certainly not forgotten our ‘Living Treasures’ who have attained the age of 90 during 2021, or the contribution they have made to the School. Following the easing of restrictions in Victoria during Term 4, members of the Development Office team were able to visit a couple of our newest Living Treasures in time for this issue of the Brown and White.
Ivan (Herb) Freake (’48) Herb is still living in his family home in North Balwyn with his wife Jill. As can be seen in the photograph above with Geoff Brown (‘62), Herb is still in great condition. On the day that he was presented with his Living Treasure plaque, Herb was enjoying a wonderful time at home with Jill and three generations of their family, including the newest addition, four-week old Lucy, their first great-granddaughter. A member of the Cricket Team of the Century for Ivanhoe Grammar School, Herb is one of only four players to have exceeded 1,000 career runs while playing for the School. During the 1948 cricket season, Herb’s final year, he scored 642 runs at an average of 64.2. Little wonder that he went on to play District Cricket with Collingwood for many years. Geoff and Herb have maintained a friendship over the years, despite a nasty, though not intentional, incident during a First X1 vs Old Ivanhoe cricket match back in the early 1960’s. Geoff,
an aggressive, young fast bowler, also a member of our Cricket Team of the Century, managed to slip one through Herb’s stoic batting defence, breaking his arm. It was great to see them renewing hostilities on Herb’s front lawn during our recent visit, but no broken bones this time.
Bob Hill (’48) Bob and Anne Hill, pictured above with Peter Swain (’75), have been great supporters of Ivanhoe Grammar School for decades, Bob having served as the Ivanhoe Grammar School doctor for over 20 years. Bob was appointed School Captain in 1948 and was a good all round sportsman. In his academic studies, Bob truly excelled, being awarded the Dux of the School in his final year. Bob studied medicine at The University of Melbourne and spent most of his working life as a General Practitioner in the Livingstone Street Medical Clinic, where he treated literally hundreds of Ivanhoe Grammar School students and alumni over the years. Despite retiring many years ago, Bob is still active in the local East Ivanhoe community, where he and Anne have enjoyed living in their family home for the last 50 years. Bob attends events at Ivanhoe Grammar School as often as possible, and he looks forward to seeing many more of his old school chums in the future, now that he has attained ‘Living Treasure’ status.
