More than 500 students attended the annual Cadet Camp, and many expressed their pleasure and enthusiasm to be back involved in a series of fun activities, which in my view, is the best leadership program available. I am delighted to report of the advancement of several major building projects. Work on one of our largest capital projects, the new Sports and Aquatic Centre has continued to progress well and is on track to open later this year.

As we head toward the end of Term 2 and mid-year break for students, I can only applaud the resilience and character of our students, staff and the whole Ivanhoe Grammar School family. So far, 2021 has not presented quite the same level of challenges or disruptions that we faced last year. Having said that, lockdowns caused by COVID-19 breakouts continue to impact on our School’s operations - and indeed our everyday life. We still cannot take the return to ‘normal’ school days for granted, and are aware that potential lockdowns, remote learning and removal of all personal interactions are ever-present. We have the experience to enable us to transition seamlessly to online learning, and with the expertise and professionalism of our entire team, can provide a high level of support to maintain the quality of education that students and their families expect. Despite some ongoing levels of uncertainty regarding the pandemic, 2021 has been an extremely positive one for students, parents and staff. Importantly, numerous co-curricular activities have been reactivated including Saturday Sport, Theatre, Music, School Camps and Cadets.
A new Café was established at the University Campus and plans are also afoot for a new Café at the Plenty Campus as well as change rooms, entertainment areas and weights rooms to support our sporting program at Chelsworth Park. Academically, our ‘One School, One Philosophy’ mantra remains a key element of our approach. The use of data continues to grow and inform student learning, and a number of digital transformation projects are being explored across the School. These projects include the launch of an online series of ‘Ivanhoe Talks’ for our senior students, and the establishment of a Teaching and Learning Framework for primary students. With our events program having recommenced in Term 2, I look forward to catching up with many of our alumni and supporters during the rest of the year. Gerard Foley Principal
LIVING LEGEND
Claus Henry Ducker, MC An Ivanhoe Living Legend Over the course of its 106-year history, Ivanhoe Grammar School has had many illustrious, celebrated and talented alumni. A glance at the names included in our Gallery of Achievement bears testament to those who have made a significant contribution to society beyond their involvement at our School. Claus Ducker is one such success story, who as a young boy left Germany as a refugee and arrived in Australia in 1941 speaking no English. He attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1942 to 1946, became a decorated soldier, followed by a distinguished career in the public service. Claus was born in Hamburg in 1933. His father worked in the German shipping industry, but believing that life under the Nazi regime would be intolerable and with a European conflict almost inevitable, decided to emigrate. In December 1938, the family moved to Tehran in Iran where Claus’s father set up a shipping company. However, following the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in 1941, the Duckers fled to the city of Isfahan. Subsequently, Claus’ father finished up in Russian hands but his mother, who had finished her education in England, was able to persuade the British Ambassador to appeal for her husband’s release. By November 1941 the family was on a ship heading down the Persian Gulf not knowing where they were going.
The family duly arrived in Australia and were interned at Tatura, Victoria. The Duckers’ anti-Nazi views led to considerable ill-treatment from other internees. Fortunately, late in 1942, an Anglican chaplain named Richard Southey (’27), arranged for Claus, a nine-year old with no English, to attend Ivanhoe Grammar School at Yea, where his earliest memories are of the great kindness he was shown by both staff and pupils. Claus learnt to speak passable English in three months. Toby Hurter (’43), who was one of the ‘big boys’, recalled that they got into terrible trouble for teaching Claus swear words! Until he arrived at Ivanhoe, Claus’ schooling had been sparse and erratic; however, as his English improved, he went ahead in leaps and bounds, for which he was forever grateful. Claus adapted to the country, its language, culture and sports, and became a popular student. In 1944, Claus’ parents were released from internment and granted refugee status. Unfortunately, they could not afford his Ivanhoe education and he was subsequently enrolled at Camberwell High School and later Melbourne Boys High, where he was known as ‘Claude’, a more English-sounding name chosen by an official at his naturalisation. On completion of secondary school, Claus attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon and enjoyed a highly distinguished career. As a Lieutenant
with the Royal Australian Regiment in Malaya, he was awarded the Military Cross for acts of exemplary gallantry while on patrols in 1958. He also served as a Company Commander in Borneo and Vietnam, where he was Mentioned in Despatches. Claus retired from the Army in 1974, and commenced his public service career as a Senate Committee Secretary. One of his proudest achievements was the report he prepared for the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence – ‘Human Rights in the Soviet Union’ – which has subsequently been incorporated into the U. S. Congressional Record. He later held senior posts including Director Protective Security, Director Electoral Policy and Director of Defence Export Control. Ever in close connection with Ivanhoe Grammar School, Claus was instrumental in the School’s successful application for a Cadet Unit in 1960 and subsequently endowed the LT Colonel C H Ducker Progress Award in 1993. He was our Canberra reunion co-ordinator for many years, where he still lives with his wife Judith. Recently, Principal Gerard Foley and Geoff Brown (’62) visited Claus and Gunnie Waddell (’37), our oldest alumni at 101 years young! Gerard, Gunnie and Claus (seated) are pictured above reliving some wonderful Ivanhoe memories.

REUNIONS With our #isograds having such a turbulent final year, the OIGA and the School hosted 1 Year Reunions for the Class of 2020. The Ridgeway Campus reunion was held at The Ridge Café on 30 April 2021 and the Plenty Campus reunion was held on 14 May 2021, at The Brunswick Mess Hall.
Class of 2020 – The Ridgeway Campus This Reunion was attended by over 50% of the cohort and proved to be a great success. The following report on the event is an extract of an excellent article submitted by Kushi Jadhav (’20). ‘The Class of 2020 Reunion was unexpected and enjoyable, especially given the ‘special’ experience that this cohort endured during the chaos of COVID-19. The event provided an opportunity to revive the sentimental memories normally shared throughout Year 12; the laughs, the friends and of course the School. There was uncertainty and some nervousness at the beginning of the night, even though many of the group are still digitally connected. However, within half an hour the atmosphere was calm and collected, and it was clear that people were genuinely reconnecting. The range of tertiary pathways that the Class of 2020 is pursuing is fascinating: university, TAFE, internships and a few taking gap years. Other post-school activities included pursuing hobbies and business ideas including fashion, sustainability, charity work, music and tutoring. Of course, a key part of any Ivanhoe Grammar School Reunion is the opportunity to reconnect with teachers, which allowed our Class of 2020 students the opportunity to ask for advice about career paths and prospects, as well as re-living some of the memorable moments of their secondary education. A special thank-you to the OIGA and the School for hosting this special event’.

REUNIONS Class of 2020 – Plenty Campus Gathering at The Brunswick Mess Hall, a business owned by Scott Assender (’90), a total of 71 former students and staff reconnected on 14 May 2021. Reminiscent of an airport arrivals hall, it was evident the cohort was excited to see each other and also their Year 12 leadership team. Laughter could be heard throughout the venue and there was a genuine sense of community in the room. Many of the Plenty Campus Class of 2020 are studying at universities across Melbourne. Biomedicine at Melbourne, Commerce and Architecture at Monash and Sports/ Commerce at Latrobe seem to be the most popular courses among this cohort. It was also great to see Liam Nichol enjoying his electrical apprenticeship with Tristan Grieve (’99) from Roar Connected. President of the OIGA, Wayne Vanderwert (’89), mentioned it was ‘outstanding to have the Class of 2020 reconnect at this event given their final year was affected by the onset of the pandemic’. OlGA Councillor and former Year 10 boys’ basketball coach Alex Bacskos (’13) was in attendance and reported that ‘it was great to reconnect with the basketball boys. They have developed into fine young men and it was a pleasure to hear what they are now studying. Hopefully, I may see a few of them down at the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club in the future’.

REUNIONS Class of 2001 – The Ridgeway Campus It was such a joy to resume our events program with the reunion of The Ridgeway Campus, Class of 2001. Held at alumni business Vasko, owned by David Dzanovski (’95), 40 classmates and staff gathered to reconnect and share stories. It was terrific to see Natalie Lim and Sarah Caruana in the room, representing International Baccalaureate (IB) students from only the second year of female students at The Ridgeway Campus. Both Natalie and Sarah transferred from the Plenty Campus for Years 11 and 12 in order to study the IB. Both women are successful in their careers with Natalie a Psychologist and Sarah a National Business Development Manager. Prior to the event, Natalie also reached out to Nancy Bates and Dennis Simpson, the parents of Tristan Simpson who was School Captain but tragically passed away in 2003. It was an honour to have both Nancy and Dennis in the room representing their son. Most of the reunion attendees had spent a lot of time with Nancy and Dennis over the years and there were many special memories shared. It was also great to see the Class of 2001 supporting each other. Stuart Adderley, who now teaches Health and PE at the University Campus, recently contacted classmate, artist Grange Wallis, to assist with an immersion experience for our Year 9 students. It was a great night and lovely to see the Class of 2001 back together and enjoying themselves.

OIGA Re-Connects with Ivanhoe Harriers
Adam Powick was named the Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Australia in April. Adam and his wife Jane are the parents of Justin (‘11), Sarah (‘13) and Emily (‘15) and were very engaged during their children’s time at Ivanhoe Grammar School, particularly as members of the South Ground Club, and they continue to be great supporters of our School.
Australia’s premium pink gin, BABY Pink Gin, the brainchild of Ellen Weigall (’13), has been awarded a Silver Medal in the Melbourne International Spirits Awards.
Ivanhoe Harriers Athletic Club was established by the Founder of Ivanhoe Grammar School, Sydney Buckley, in 1914, and has since forged a long tradition of producing outstanding athletes.
While we seem to have plenty of winemakers among the ranks of Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, we believe that this could be an alumni first: an internationally recognised award for a spirit. Congratulations Ellen!
Earlier this year, through the generous support of the OIGA, Ivanhoe Harriers redesigned their long-standing uniform, (see photograph above), to include the OIGA crest on the right breast, reinforcing the historical connection with Ivanhoe Grammar School.
Adam grew up in a working-class family in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and was taught the value of hard work and perseverance, the importance of caring and looking after each other, and to never take himself or the world around him too seriously. These lessons remain important in his career and are just as relevant today as they were for him growing up. Throughout his extensive career at Deloitte, he has served in numerous senior leadership positions, including as the Global Clients & Industries Leader for Deloitte Consulting, Managing Partner of Consulting for Deloitte Australia, and National Clients, Industries & Markets Leader for Deloitte Australia. Adam holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from RMIT and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Monash University. With this latest appointment Adam will no doubt be even more pressed for time, but we trust that he and Jane will still have time to occasionally return to Ivanhoe Grammar School, perhaps to cheer on our First XI alongside their friends at the South Ground Club.

According to the BABY Pink Gin website, this award-winning spirit is distilled with organic roseberry botanicals and a traditional juniper base, but the end-result is not as sweet as it looks, and perfect for making a real pink gin and tonic. Clearly Ellen’s attention to detail during those senior Science classes has really paid off, and we can’t wait for her Ten Year Reunion in 2023 and the potential for some free samples. When she is not working hard distilling gin, Ellen is a Director of Flaunt Marketing and PR, so she is clearly an alumni with many talents.
This collaboration goes back to 2019 when OIGA President, Wayne Vanderwert (‘89), caught up with Ivanhoe Harriers Committee Member, Michael Wallace (‘90), at an Old Ivanhoe football match. Both Wayne and Michael were part of Athletics premiership teams at Ivanhoe Grammar School, and with their mutual passion for athletics and football, the concept of the Ivanhoe Harriers becoming one of the OIGA sporting clubs was floated. During its early years, the Ivanhoe Harriers trained at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Sydney Buckley became the first President and subsequently served as Vice President right through to 1941. In the early 1920’s, the Ivanhoe Harriers grew into a powerful combination which dominated ‘A Grade’ Athletics during the 1930’s and subsequently the 1970’s and 1980’s, winning many Victorian Team Premierships. Olympic Games representatives from the Ivanhoe Harriers include Alf Watson (’24), who was also Ivanhoe Grammar Schools first Olympian and was subsequently elected as Captain of the Ivanhoe Harriers’ Team of the Century. The Ivanhoe Harriers Athletic Club remains a great place for Ivanhoe Grammar School alumni to continue their athletics training and competition.

Peter Toomey Police Officer of the Year Sergeant Con Matsamakis (‘89), pictured third from the left in the above photograph, from Heidelberg Police Station has been presented with the Peter Toomey Police Officer of the Year Award for 2021. Named after the late Peter Toomey, a long standing officer with Victoria Police and member of the Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale, this award recognises an outstanding Victorian or NSW Police Officer who has demonstrated service above self in his or her community. It is a way of encouraging local police officers to become more greatly involved in their local community. Since his appointment as a Police Officer, Con learned that policing is not just catching ‘bad guys’, but also comforting and supporting their victims. On his first assignment to Reservoir, he learned to work with multi-cultural communities who often had an innate fear of police. Con subsequently spent over five years with the Dog Squad, before returning to Reservoir in his current role, in which he has become closely involved with the Muslim and Somali communities, working hard to build bridges and trust. Sergeant Matsamakis was nominated for the Peter Toomey Police Officer of the Year in recognition of his continued service to the Heidelberg, Banyule and wider North West community, especially in relation to his engagement with disadvantaged and multicultural people. The Award was conferred at a dinner in March, where Con was supported by colleagues and the Rotary community.
Snippets Keen watchers of the Channel Seven News may have noticed intrepid reporter Josh Ribarich (‘08), pictured above, on television recently. Following postings around the country, Josh has obviously been doing well in his media role and we wish him all the best for the future. Helen Page-Wood, a longstanding, popular and respected staff member at Ivanhoe Grammar School, has announced she will step down from her role as Deputy Head of Buckley House at the end of 2021. Apart from two maternity breaks, Helen has been with the School since 1980 during which she has given great service in many roles. Helen’s pastoral care of both staff and students and her support of parents have meant a great deal to the Buckley House community. Helen will take up a part-time role within the School’s Individual Needs area, for which she is extremely well qualified. Nigel Preston (’72), President of the Old Ivanhoe Law Society (‘OILS’) has recently completed and released an e-book titled ‘Your job of choice after law school’. The e-book will be published in the UK and possibly the USA before the end of this year. He has also launched a collection of YouTube videos of the same title intended for students nearing the end of their law degrees. After a long and distinguished legal career, Nigel is dedicated to meeting the career needs of alumni law students. Congratulations to Alex Mirkov (‘17) who has been elevated to the Carlton senior AFL list following the mid-season draft. Alex achieved AGSV Volleyball representation while at Ivanhoe Grammar School and since 2018 has worked here as a sports coach, currently coaching Volleyball and Girls Basketball. Alex also played two seasons with the OIGFC and was a valued team mate and player at the Club. On another AFL note, Nik Cox (‘19) was rewarded for his great form at Essendon with the Round 12 NAB AFL Rising Star nomination. Comedian, MC and raconteur, George Dimarelos (‘04), recently performed at the Melbourne Comedy Club in March appearing in ‘A Bookish Comedy Show’ to rave reviews. George also writes and performs sketch comedy as part of the 5MA Productions team, and is currently studying at the Melbourne Actors Lab. The Principal, Gerard Foley, recently announced that Dan Brown, our Deputy Principal, Head of the Plenty Campus, has accepted the role as Principal of Emmanuel College in Queensland, commencing in January 2022. Dan has completed five years in his executive role, and has made a significant contribution to all areas of the school including Strategic Planning, the day-to-day management of the Plenty Campus, and oversight and implementation of several key school-wide initiatives.

RISING STAR 2021 – David Hrovat Ivanhoe Grammar School is delighted to announce that David Hrovat, Head of Year 8 at Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Plenty Campus, has been named as a Rising Star 2021 by the Educator Magazine. The Rising Stars awards recognise and celebrate the best educators in Australia. According to the Educator Online, out of 100 nominations, 32 educators ‘stood out for their outstanding leadership, incredible initiative and passion, expertise, innovative approach to teaching and learning, and vision – all necessary to thrive in the everevolving education landscape.’ David is a passionate educator who studied Biomedical Science at Deakin, followed by a Masters of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne/ University of Oulu (Finland). Plenty Campus welcomed him in 2015 for 10 weeks as a student teacher; he then started working as a teacher’s aide while completing his studies until he received a teaching position in 2017. David is now in his fifth year of teaching at Plenty Campus. He is an exceptional teacher and a vital and valued member of the School community.

Anzac Day 2021 - Lest We Forget Every April on a school day as close as possible to Anzac Day, our Cadet Unit leads the way as Ivanhoe Grammar School gathers to pause, reflect, and give thanks. In services across the School, either live or streamed, we acknowledged the past sacrifices of our own alumni and the wider Australian community. We acknowledged the first Anzacs, the brave Australian and New Zealand soldiers who landed at Gallipoli at dawn 106 years ago on 25 April 1915, and we remembered and honoured the 72 alumni who died while members of the Armed Services since 1939. Principal Gerard Foley spoke about the significance of Anzac Day and the importance of remembering those who served our country. ‘On this day we
reflect, commemorate and thank all those who served to ensure we can live the life we are fortunate to lead today. We particularly pay tribute to the 72 alumni who lost their lives in combat.’ Services took place at Plenty Campus and The Ridgeway Campus, where cadets mounted Catafalque Guards and laid a wreath as part of a moving ceremony. Buckley House and the Middle Years held services at special assemblies where our community came together to pause and reflect. Plenty Campus cadets supported the Laurimar Town Centre Dawn Service on Anzac Day, while The Ridgeway Campus cadets led the March for the Heidelberg RSL. Hopefully next year we can also renew our commitment to the Whittlesea community at their ANZAC Day Service in 2022.
AROUND THE SCHOOL Wellbeing Curriculum Ivanhoe Grammar School is taking steps to ensure the best possible programs are being provided to our students. A full review of our Healthy Relations Wellbeing curriculum is currently being undertaken. Student input into this has been critical and some positive changes have already been made. In addition, the School is in the process of developing a number of initiatives to assist our families in addressing the issues at home. Young people remain vulnerable and as a School, we face and address these challenges whenever needed.
Consent Workshops During May, the School arranged for Elephant Ed to run a series of workshops on consent with our Year 11 students to complement the important work done in Respectful Relationships as part of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Wellbeing Framework. Since 2015, Elephant Ed has been transforming the way sex education is taught across Australia by sending young, relatable and highly trained facilitators to deliver fun and engaging workshops. Designed by young people for young people, the workshops provide students with the information and tools to be safe and informed about respecting boundaries in healthy relationships.

Cadets 60th Ceremonial Parade This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Ivanhoe Grammar School Cadet Unit. The Ceremonial Parade (aka Passing Out Parade) was held on Tuesday 25 May, with the cadets marching down the Ridgeway onto the North Ground.
Despite being held in pouring rain, it was wonderful to have our own Lt Col (Retd) David Waugh in attendance. David, who retired in 2016 after more than 40 years of service to the School, is pictured above with Geoff Brown (’62) who was our first CUO.
Ivanhoe Grammar School’s 2021 play ‘The 39 Steps’ is a comedy-spy-thriller based on Alfred Hitchcock’s famous 1935 film. The play revolves around central character Richard Hannay who is framed for murder and goes on the run. Will Hannay save the day? The excitement is building as the construction of our world-class Sports and Aquatic Centre nears completion. It will be visually impressive, eco-friendly and practical, and enjoyed by students and staff for many years to come.
The Fidelis Society was established to recognise and thank those who have made a bequest to the School, and to encourage others to do the same.
A group of 25 members and guests headed to Hanging Rock Winery on a sublime autumn Friday afternoon for our Term 2 Ridgeway Club event.
Our school song begins ‘We are proud to be members of Ivanhoe School...’ The Fidelis Society members are proud to be investing in future generations of Ivanarians through their bequest.
Hosted by Club Members John Ellis (‘63) and his wife Annie, we enjoyed the very best local produce for lunch, a tour of the winery’s wonderful sculpture exhibits, and a close-up view of John’s award winning Speckled Park cows. Of course, the wines were first rate – as you can see from the happy crowd in the photograph above.
This multi-level facility will house: • two rooftop courts for netball and tennis • four basketball/netball courts, the first of their kind built in Australia with NBA standard floors • eight indoor volleyball courts • a 50-metre, eight-lane FINA accredited Olympic-sized swimming pool, that can be converted to two water polo courts • 16 badminton courts • Fitness centre and weights room • classrooms, a kiosk and so much more! Ivanhoe Grammar School has achieved its position of prominence through the vision of our Founders and the generosity of past students, parents and supporters. By including Ivanhoe in your Will, you help ensure that future generations of students will continue to acquire a lifelong love of learning and be of service to others. Members of the Fidelis Society maintain a close connection with the School through invitations to special events and the annual Fidelis Society Lunch hosted by the Principal. The 2021 Fidelis Society Lunch was held on Wednesday 28 April in School House, and as can be seen from the photo above, it was another memorable Ivanhoe event.
The Ridgeway Club has raised over $800,000 for Ivanhoe Grammar School over the last three decades. This trip to Hanging Rock Winery resulted in a further donation to the School of $2,000, so the event was worthwhile as well as great fun!
