We are very proud of the Class of 2021. Congratulations to our Dux of School and IB Dux Patrick Suiter who received a Perfect Score of 45 which translates to the highest possible attainable ATAR of 99.95. Cherry Chen, Benjamin Little, Benjamin Ross and Anson Wang were awarded joint Proxime Accessit achieving an IB score of 44. This is equivalent to an ATAR of 99.75 and places them in the top 0.25% of the State. As an open-entry school, students of all abilities are a part of our School community. Although the results share some of our top achievements, the importance of celebrating the personal best of all our students cannot be underestimated. We congratulate all students who have worked to their capacity and thank the dedicated teaching staff who have supported them.

In 2021, a number of Year 12 students at Ivanhoe Grammar School chose to undertake the well-respected International Baccalaureate (IB) to expand their options for tertiary education. The dedication and hard work for these students were realised in early January 2022 with the release of the IB results. Congratulations to all students, we are extremely proud of their achievements.

IVANHOE LEARNERS – THE FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Two Ivanhoe families discuss their unique experience of navigating the final years of school amid the challenges of a pandemic.
The O’Grady Family - Katelyn How have your parents and family supported you through school, particularly during the last two years? The past two years have been extremely difficult during COVID-19 and studying remotely, however, my parents have supported me in many ways such as encouraging me to keep going no matter the circumstances. In addition, they recommended I should be involved in co-curricular opportunities to develop other life skills.
What is your fondest memory of your time at school?
The 2021 Music Showcase. I was not only able to perform to the best of my ability but was also able to improve my leadership skills by encouraging and supporting the cast and crew. I also really enjoyed Year 10 camp as it was one of the first opportunities, I had to get to know my cohort and I found the 24 hour solo a great opportunity to reflect.
What are your future plans?
I hope to become a doctor by post-graduate studies, and I am excited for what is to come in the future. I am grateful for the skills I have learnt, and I am so grateful for the amazing teachers who have supported me throughout my time at Ivanhoe.
Katelyn’s Parents Narelle and Phill How did you support your child at school during the pandemic?
During the pandemic we kept the communication open and tried to listen to the concerns of everyone. From sufficient home internet (especially for Netflix and other gaming devices) to trying to find a place for everyone to have their own space to work or study. It was difficult as a parent

to reassure our children in a period of uncertainty, so we went back to basics and remained positive while looking at what we were grateful for. Living next to a National Park and adopting a Siberian husky were a bonus in keeping the exercise alive!
What are your fondest memories of your daughter’s time at Ivanhoe?
We enjoyed watching Katelyn thrive and take every opportunity to be involved with all the co-curricular activities (from debating to choir) and making new friendships. Probably our most special memory was seeing her perform in the Music Showcase in 2021. We have watched her journey on stage for many years as a Young Australian Broadway Chorus member however, the School Music Showcase seemed so much more important during the pandemic, especially to see them return to a sense of normality. We loved seeing her perform, but especially loved seeing her lead and coach the younger cast members and happily assist staff.
What are your hopes and dreams for Katelyn?
Katelyn changed schools in Year 10 to follow her dreams and then unfortunately the pandemic arrived which meant working remotely for significant periods in Year 11 and 12. This was a difficult time given friendships were only just new, and the co-curricular/ leadership opportunities were limited or different. However, her determination and commitment shone through, and she never lost sight of her ambitions...well maybe just a few times (but who didn’t?). We know if Katelyn can survive 2020 and 2021 and complete VCE during a pandemic and come out smiling, which she did, then she can achieve anything she puts her mind to. We hope Katelyn seizes every opportunity, but mostly we hope she enjoys the journey along the way.

How have your parents and family supported you through school, particularly during the last two years?
How did you support your child at school during the pandemic?
My family has been a major aspect of my schooling. Throughout my six years at Ivanhoe, they have been there to support me through thick and thin. They took me to every Saturday sport game, woke up at the crack of dawn to take me to swim training. Mum has been a huge help from feeding me to taking me to school for the last two years. Without them it would have been a different school experience.
What is your fondest memory of your time at school? To say I have one stand out memory would be an understatement. There would be a standout moment from every year. The most memorable ones are winning the House swimming in Year 9 while Middle Years House Captain, nothing beats the feeling of hearing your House come first while standing at the other end of the pool. Another great memory was the Year 9 China trip. Making new connections with students and teachers and new friends in China as well as seeing all the wonders of the country, like the Great Wall of China was a surreal experience.
What are your future plans?
At university I hope to study atmospheric sciences, which will hopefully lead to a career as a Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). I also hope to later study geographical sciences, which will give me wider knowledge for my career choices at not only the BOM but other institutions and organisations. While doing all this I hope to work as a swimming coach at Ivanhoe and Northcote swimming pools where I can continue to leave a legacy and teach the swimmers of the future.
The word unprecedented was a word that we never really used until this pandemic hit our relatively normal lives. Having to complete most of Year 11 and 12 online, I would consider unprecedented. Supporting Nicholas through his final two years of schooling has been a challenge to us all as a family, never have we all had to be on the same page as we have in the last two years. Communication and understanding are something we have all become a lot better at and a major support mechanism in enabling Nicholas to complete his studies, in a not so ideal environment.
What are your fondest memories of your son’s time at Ivanhoe?
There are so many fond memories we have of his time at Ivanhoe, from School camps, the School musical to Saturday morning sport. The highlight, however, would definitely be the AGSV Swimming Competition held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Never before have I heard so much cheering and chanting of team support, a noise that could rival a footy match at the MCG. We are exceptionally proud of Nicholas and the diversified range of activities he has undertaken.
What are your hopes and dreams for Nicholas?
Our hopes and dreams for Nicholas are that he can reflect on his time at Ivanhoe and draw on all his experiences to pursue his dream of becoming a Meteorologist. Our dream is that he continues to pursue his passion and interest in atmospheric sciences. Ultimately, we all want the best for our children that they continue to grow into humble well-respected members of their various communities. And finally, appreciating the journey is as important as the destination.

YOUNG PEOPLE OF CHARACTER As a member of the International Round Square Schools network, Ivanhoe is committed to providing all students with a well-rounded education and a rich diversity of learning. The Class of 2021 endured two challenging years; however, the difficulties they faced and lessons and strategies they developed fostered resilience and showed that they are exemplary young people of character. The shared experience they found to collaborate with their peers and teachers, has brought them together in a way unlike any other graduating class in the school’s history.
LAUREN BLACK
Forming connections, I made not only within my cohort but also across year levels, with teachers and mentors was the best. These allowed for comfort, collaboration, and support throughout my VCE years and made school a second home for myself and so many others. I was challenged through VCE by the trials and tribulations of COVID-19. The missed opportunities or events while often devastating fostered a gratefulness for those once seemingly supplemental things. I became more involved with the co-curricular options within the school, occupying my mind with the many simple joys of school life. A resilient, humble individual who is willing to learn from challenges, consistently approaching life with an open mind and kind heart are what makes a young person of character.
ZAC MCCORMACK
The best thing about my final years of school was spending time with my school mates, who I’ve known since Foundation. Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit me hard, and I was unable to experience fun events such as the formal. Luckily, I was still able to experience a game or two of footy which I absolutely loved. We overcame the challenges of COVID-19 as a year level and as a school. I believe what makes a young person of character is the ability to lead and communicate. This means standing out from the pack and being a leader not a follower. In other words, being like a Shepherd to the sheep. This ability allows a person to create guidance for others to follow, as well as look for someone to go to if they are lost. It’s a trait that I try to embody.
Throughout their time at school but particularly in their final two years, the Class of 2021 proved that when you give your best, then learning growth is assured, regardless of the pursuit. There are many great stories of great learning success and individual growth, and we hope these stories will inspire others to be courageous enough to do their best and compassionate enough to support, include and celebrate everyone in their community. COURTNEY BLACK
The most memorable experience of my final years at school was the performing arts including secondary dance, drama and the school musicals. The atmosphere when performing on stage and the joy I had in learning with and leading other students was wonderful. The biggest challenge in my final years, like many others, was lockdown. While it was difficult to be at home and be away from friends and teachers and miss out on key senior school events, I learnt a lot about myself and in the end I was resilient. A young person of character is a leader and a learner and above all, kind and compassionate. They are collaborative in a team-environment and resourceful individually. They are consistently resilient and motivated in all aspects of life and schooling, particularly in overcoming challenges.
OLIVIA PACHIOLI
The best thing about my final years of schooling would have been the connections I was able to form with my teachers. How easy it was to approach them, to discuss my day or to have a general catch up. The challenges I faced and overcame would have been the lockdowns which then negatively impacted on a connected year level. Being open minded is what makes a young person of character. This allows for people’s ideas to be considered and for ideas be seen from a different perspective.
GEORGIA PIRDIS
My favourite aspect of my final years of school would be the Senior Years culture. I felt supported by teachers and peers and will cherish these memories forever. I also valued representing Ivanhoe in the Swimming and Football Teams and hope to return to school in the future to coach the upcoming students. A major challenge faced was online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was difficult to stay motivated, focused and engaged with classes, however, the teachers and support systems at Ivanhoe were incredible in getting me through. I also overcame this challenge by staying in close contact with friends, who were always there for a laugh to lighten up my mood. A young person of character gives everything a go. Stepping out of your comfort zone and participating in a new experience helps an individual grow and develop into a young person of character. This individual is not afraid to make mistakes, because ultimately these mistakes are what helps a person become the best possible version of themselves.
