For Sukanya Manerikar, founder of SVÉRVE Beauty, understanding beauty has always begun with understanding skin. A professional makeup artist with more than 12 years of experience, she has worked with thousands of faces, particularly brides, gaining a close understanding of how skin behaves beyond the controlled environment of a beauty counter or product laboratory. Humidity, long hours, sensitive skin, layering products and the demands of special occasions have all shaped her perspective on what beauty products truly need to deliver.

That experience eventually led to a question that became central to SVÉRVE: why are skincare and makeup treated as two separate worlds when both have to work together on the same face?

The answer became the foundation of the brand. SVÉRVE was created to occupy the space between skincare and makeup, developing multifunctional products that care for the skin while delivering the

larger belief that ambitious brands with national or international potential do not necessarily have to originate in traditional metropolitan business centres. For SVÉRVE, Goa is not simply where the company happens to be based. It is part of the story behind how the brand sees beauty and how its founder wants to build it.

A Partnership Behind the Brand

Sukanya is joined by her husband, Sarvesh S. P. Bandodkar, who serves as co-founder and brings a complementary perspective to the business. While Sukanya’s background in beauty informs product development, formulation, branding, communication and consumer understanding, Sarvesh contributes his business and operational experience.

It represents the kind of hybrid beauty product SVÉRVE aims to develop, bringing together the care associated with skincare and the finish and performance associated with makeup. The same philosophy is intended to guide the brand as it expands. Rather than separating complexion, preparation and treatment into increasingly complicated routines, SVÉRVE seeks to create products that can naturally work across these categories.

His focus includes commercial decisions, scalability and the practical considerations involved in growing a company. The contrast between their strengths has become an important part of the way SVÉRVE operates. Where Sukanya may focus intensely on the details of a formula, texture, finish or creative direction, Sarvesh provides another lens through which those decisions can be assessed. Their partnership extends beyond formal business discussions. Building a company together means that ideas and decisions can surface at almost any time, but the shared objective remains the same: to create something meaningful with long-term potential.

Building a Beauty Brand From Goa

The Work Behind a Single Product

Creating a beauty company from Goa has brought its own set of challenges. Much of the manufacturing, formulation, packaging and supporting beauty infrastructure is located outside the state, requiring considerable travel, sampling, follow-ups and coordination during the development process.

The polished product a consumer eventually sees represents only a small part of the development process. Behind every tube is a series of formulations, samples, tests, packaging decisions, manufacturing considerations, compliance requirements and logistical challenges. For Sukanya, one of the biggest lessons of building SVÉRVE has been understanding just how much work goes into creating a single beauty product. Formulations may need to be rejected or reworked, packaging can present limitations, manufacturing can take longer than expected and minimum order quantities can

Built with experience

Yet Goa remains central to SVÉRVE’s identity. For Sukanya, the state has influenced her understanding of beauty as something effortless, practical and comfortable, rather than overly complicated. The decision to build the company there also reflects a

influence decisions. Each stage requires attention to detail. Her perfectionism has consequently become both an advantage and a challenge. She pays close attention to the formula, texture, finish, packaging and overall experience of using a product. That can mean taking longer to reach the final version, but it also reflects a clear principle: SVÉRVE would rather take more time than introduce something its founders do not fully believe in.

The experience has also reinforced an important distinction between creating a product and building a brand. A strong formulation is only the beginning. Consumer trust, clear communication and a genuine reason for choosing the product are equally important in establishing a lasting presence in the market.

A Thoughtful Future

SVÉRVE’s ambitions extend well beyond its first product. The larger vision is to create an ecosystem of skin-first beauty products that continue to bridge skincare and makeup. Future possibilities include skin-preparation products, complexion hybrids, lip products and other categories where the brand identifies a genuine consumer need.

grew up as a state-level chess player, experiences that reflect the varied interests that have shaped her personality.

Fitness, travel, discovering new beauty products and creating content are also part of her life. Her curiosity frequently turns ordinary experiences into opportunities for observation. Even while travelling or shopping, she finds herself noticing packaging, textures, retail experiences and consumer behaviour.

That curiosity has become an integral part of SVÉRVE. What might begin as an interest in a product, a package or a small design detail can become a deeper consideration of why something works and how it could be improved.

It is this attention to detail, combined with more than a decade of working directly with real skin, that continues to shape SVÉRVE Beauty. Rather than choosing between skincare and makeup, the brand is building its identity around the idea that the two can work together. From its beginnings in Goa to its aspirations beyond India, SVÉRVE is taking a considered approach to beauty, one product and one real-world experience at a time.

However, growth is not being approached simply through an expanding product count. The intention is to develop the range carefully, with every product having a clear purpose rather than adding to the market simply for the sake of variety.

India is the starting point, but the long-term ambition reaches further. Sukanya envisions SVÉRVE becoming an Indian-born global beauty brand, eventually finding its way onto international shelves while retaining the connection to Goa from which it began.

Creativity Beyond Beauty

Fashion & Lifestyle Boutique

Chim Founded by Shefali Mahadik, Chim is a Patnem boutique showcasing distinctive Indian clothing, jewellery, accessories, art and lifestyle products, blending thoughtful design, craftsmanship, individuality and Goa’s creative spirit.

In the coastal surroundings of Patnem, South Goa, Chim has established itself as a distinctive destination for thoughtfully designed clothing, jewellery, accessories and lifestyle products.

Founded in 2003 by Shefali Mahadik, an Industrial Designer from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, the boutique brings together an eclectic collection of Indian-made products, independent designs and handcrafted creations. Built around an appreciation for individuality, craftsmanship and quality, Chim has evolved over more than two decades while retaining the personal approach that shaped its beginnings.

A Boutique Rooted in Design and Discovery

Chim's story began when Shefali Mahadik moved from Jaipur to Goa in the early 2000s. At the time, she noticed a gap in the local retail landscape, where visitors had limited access to well-designed, goodquality Indian products. Recognising an opportunity to present Indian craftsmanship and contemporary design in a different light, she established Chim in 2003. It became the first boutique in Canacona, introducing a thoughtfully curated selection of clothing, accessories and handmade products to the area.

Her education in industrial design played a significant role in shaping the boutique's identity. With an understanding of materials, traditional skills, craftsmanship and the relationship between design and the environment, Shefali approached the store as an extension of her own creative interests. What began as a small, personally curated space gradually developed into a destination for distinctive Indian products, guided by her travels, discoveries and relationships with designers and craftspeople.

The name Chim, which comes from Shefali's nickname, reflects the personal nature of the boutique. Rather than following conventional retail practices or seasonal fashion trends, she envisioned a space where every product would have a reason to be there. This approach continues to define the store, with its constantly evolving collection reflecting her appreciation for originality, thoughtful design and objects with character.

Shefali Mahadik An Eclectic Approach to Fashion

At the heart of Chim's collection is a relaxed, contemporary aesthetic that combines comfort with distinctive design. Its clothing selection is curated and developed with an emphasis on natural, handmade fabrics, considered cuts and unusual prints. The pieces are designed to be versatile, making them suitable for everyday wear as well as travel. Rather than adhering to a particular fashion trend, the boutique focuses on garments that offer individuality and can remain relevant beyond a single season.

The women's collection reflects this philosophy through comfortable silhouettes, interesting textiles and clothing that can be styled in different ways. Its selection of dresses and easy-to-wear separates complements Goa's coastal lifestyle while retaining a broader design sensibility. Swimwear is another important part of the offering, with the boutique having carried collections from Bali-based label Thaikila over the years, particularly its bikinis and other beachwear. The men's collection follows the same design principles, featuring well-made shirts, quirky T-shirts and relaxed essentials.

These pieces appeal to customers looking for clothing that balances practicality with a distinctive appearance. In particular, Chim has developed a following among international visitors who return for its contemporary designs and alternatives to conventional fashion.

Accessories and Lifestyle with Character

Beyond clothing, Chim offers a diverse selection of accessories and lifestyle products that complement its overall aesthetic. Jewellery, bags, scarves, stoles and pouches form part of its constantly changing assortment, providing customers with pieces that combine functionality and individual expression. These are accompanied by an assortment of studio pottery, brass and steel home décor, textiles, books and handmade objects.

Art also has a distinct presence within the boutique. Artist Nicky Thomas has his studio at Chim, where he creates urban pop folk art through stencil art, monoprints and original works.

His practice adds an artistic dimension to the space, bringing together contemporary visual expression and the boutique's broader interest in independent creativity. The selection extends beyond conventional fashion and home accessories, allowing visitors to encounter products from different creative disciplines in one setting. From wearable pieces to decorative objects and art prints, the collection reflects Shefali's preference for unusual designs and items that possess a distinct identity.

Championing Craftsmanship and Independent Design

A defining aspect of Chim is its commitment to quality, originality and craftsmanship. Shefali selects products based on their design, material quality and authenticity, with particular attention to the people and processes behind them. Her longstanding interest in livelihood projects involving craftspeople has also influenced the boutique's development, encouraging an approach in which design can contribute to sustainable opportunities for

the boutique's selection, from lightweight clothing and swimwear to easy dresses, jewellery and accessories suited to a relaxed coastal lifestyle. However, its connection to Goa extends beyond beach-inspired fashion.

When Shefali established Chim, Goa had a distinctive mix of travellers, artists, musicians, designers and independent thinkers from India and abroad. This cultural diversity helped shape the boutique's eclectic character, encouraging a selection that brings together varied influences rather than conforming to a single aesthetic. The openness and creative energy associated with the region continue to inform its approach to design and curation.

Studio pottery traditional skills. Over the years, Chim has worked with and stocked products associated with various craft and livelihood initiatives, alongside independent designers and artisans.

Despite its coastal setting, Chim deliberately moves beyond stereotypical interpretations of Goa's fashion and lifestyle. Its collection combines relaxed pieces with contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship and artistic expression. This broader perspective allows it to maintain a distinct identity as a design-led boutique that draws inspiration from its surroundings without being limited by them.

Some collections have become enduring favourites, while others are introduced for shorter periods, allowing the selection to evolve with new discoveries. This balance between familiar pieces and fresh additions helps preserve the boutique's individuality without restricting it to a fixed identity.

The emphasis on well-made products also extends to longevity. Rather than prioritising fleeting trends, Chim places importance on garments and objects that can remain useful and appealing over time. This approach is reflected in the experiences of longstanding customers who continue to wear clothing purchased at the boutique many years ago, demonstrating the lasting value of considered design and quality craftsmanship.

Shaped by Goa's Coastal Culture

Goa has been central to Chim's identity since its inception. Its location in Patnem naturally influences

A Personal Shopping Experience

For Chim, shopping is as much about discovery as it is about finding a particular product. The boutique's varied selection encourages visitors to browse, explore and encounter pieces they may not have initially been looking for. With new products regularly joining the collection, the experience remains fresh even for those who have visited repeatedly.

This approach has helped Chim cultivate a loyal clientele over the years, including international visitors who make the boutique part of their regular trips to Goa. Some customers have been returning since its early days in 2003, while others have introduced their children to the store. Such relationships reflect the personal nature of the boutique and the familiarity it has developed with generations of visitors.

Shefali remains closely involved in selecting the products that enter the store, preserving the individual perspective that shaped Chim from the beginning. For her, the pleasure of discovering an unusual object, an independent designer or a beautifully made piece remains an essential part of running the boutique.

Equally rewarding are visits from people who first discovered Chim years ago and now return with their families, making it part of their enduring connection with Goa.

Looking ahead, Chim intends to continue discovering independent designers, craftspeople and unusual products while preserving the qualities that have shaped its identity. As interest in thoughtfully made goods and the stories behind them grows, the boutique remains closely aligned with these values.

For Shefali, the journey from studying industrial design to establishing an independent boutique in Goa has been an unexpected but fulfilling one. What began as a personal initiative has grown into a longstanding retail space shaped by creativity, relationships and an appreciation for Indian design.

More than two decades after its founding, Chim continues to hold on to its original idea: bringing together beautifully designed, thoughtfully made and distinctive products while giving visitors the opportunity to discover something unexpected.

Growing While Staying True to Its Roots

Sustaining an independent boutique for more than two decades has required Chim to adapt to significant changes in fashion and retail. Evolving customer expectations, shifts in tourism, the growth of online shopping and changes in travel patterns have all influenced the business. Throughout these developments, the boutique has continued to evolve while retaining its original emphasis on personal curation and distinctive design.

Its longevity is reflected in the relationships it has maintained with customers, designers, artists and craftspeople. The opportunity to see customers return wearing clothing purchased 15 or 20 years earlier is particularly meaningful to Shefali, reinforcing her belief in quality and thoughtful consumption.

Wedding & Bridal Accessories

TWINED&TIED Cindy Willa Vaz’s TWINED&TIED transforms celebrations through bespoke, handcrafted accessories, blending thoughtful personalisation, meticulous craftsmanship and creative design across weddings, milestones, festive occasions, baby keepsakes and meaningful family moments.

For Cindy Willa Vaz, creativity exists alongside precision. By profession, she is an Associate Manager in the IT industry, where problem-solving, structure and attention to detail are part of her everyday work. By passion, she is the founder and creative director of TWINED&TIED, a Goa-based creative studio dedicated to bespoke accessories and handcrafted details for life’s most meaningful celebrations. The combination of these two worlds has shaped an approach to design that is both meticulous and deeply personal.

Founded in December 2023, TWINED&TIED creates wedding accessories, christening and communion pieces, baby keepsakes, maternity props, festive décor and bespoke home accents. At its heart is a simple belief: the smallest details can carry immense meaning when they are thoughtfully created around the people and stories behind a celebration.

From Christmas Wreaths to Wedding Details

TWINED&TIED began with something close to Cindy’s heart: Christmas. A self-confessed Christmas enthusiast, she began decorating her own home as early as September and decided in 2023 to create her own festive décor. She particularly enjoyed making Christmas wreaths and soon wondered whether the pieces she created for herself could become something others would want in their homes.

She created an Instagram page, made a small collection of wreaths and shared the profile with family and friends. The response was immediate, with the wreaths selling out. Yet with Christmas being seasonal, Cindy began thinking about what could come next. Bridal accessories became the natural direction to explore, leading her to create a few pieces and share them online. Several months later, she received her first wedding order. What began as a personal creative project gradually developed into a studio, growing slowly and steadily through genuine interest and word of mouth.

That beginning continues to hold significance for Cindy. The Christmas wreaths remain among her most memorable creations because they represent

Owner - Cindy Willa Vaz the point at which an idea became a possibility, while her first wedding order taught her the importance of communication throughout the creative process.

Creating for Every Part of the Celebration

Although weddings remain the studio’s primary focus, TWINED&TIED has developed a broad collection of handcrafted pieces designed to complement different moments within a celebration. Its bridal offerings include bouquets for brides, bridesmaid bouquets, hoops, hair accessories and wrist corsages, along with boutonnieres for groomsmen, pageboys and family members.

For younger members of the wedding party, the studio creates flower girl baskets, hoops, pomanders, tiaras and headbands. It also produces keepsake and gift boxes, personalised toasting flutes, cake cutlery, cake toppers, hangers, ring holders, unity candles, wedding wall décor and favours.

Each piece provides an opportunity to bring the overall wedding aesthetic together while adding an individual touch. The studio’s work extends beyond the wedding day as well.

Christening and Holy Communion accessories, baby keepsakes, maternity shoot props and memory candles form part of its personalised offerings. For homes, its work includes wreaths, decorative floral baskets and floral-decorated frames, while Christmas décor remains an important part of the studio’s story.

TWINED&TIED also creates details for anniversaries and milestone celebrations, including 25th and 50th anniversaries and landmark birthdays, as well as housewarming occasions. This allows the studio to work across different stages of family life, creating pieces that are intended to become part of the memories associated with them.

Designed Around the Person, Not Just the Occasion

Personalisation is central to Cindy’s approach. She believes that every bride has a story and that an accessory should reflect a part of it. Her process therefore begins with listening and communication rather than simply selecting from a catalogue of existing designs. Understanding a bride’s vision, wedding aesthetic and the small details that hold

Christmas Wreath personal significance helps shape the direction of each piece. Colours, textures, embellishments and finishing touches are considered in relation to the individual celebration. Rather than simply modifying an existing accessory, Cindy creates around the person and the story behind the occasion.

Communication continues throughout the process. From the initial conversation and exchange of ideas to the development of the final piece, clients remain part of the creative journey. Inspirations can evolve, details can be refined and expectations can be clarified along the way. For Cindy, this ongoing exchange is essential to ensuring that the final creation reflects what the client originally imagined while remaining practical and achievable.

A Thoughtful Handmade Process

Christening Accessories & baby keepsake board

Behind every finished piece is a process that balances creativity with careful planning. The journey begins with sketching, mood boarding and material selection based on the client’s vision. Before production begins, Cindy also believes in setting clear expectations around timelines and communicating what can and cannot be achieved within them.

Material sourcing follows, with each component selected to bring the intended design together. The handcrafting stage then involves assembly, arrangement, personalisation and detailed finishing. Rather than prioritising volume, TWINED&TIED places emphasis on quality, with each piece receiving the attention required to meet its standards.

Photography forms the final part of the process, allowing the completed work to be documented before it is handed over. This attention at every stage reflects Cindy’s belief that handmade work should not be rushed simply to increase output. At TWINED&TIED, taking more time is an intentional choice, allowing quality, durability and beauty to remain at the centre of the work.

Where Goa Meets Global Inspiration

Cindy’s design language draws strongly from the natural world. Goa’s tropical greenery and coastal landscape influence her visual sensibility, while global design trends, unexpected colour combinations and the personal stories shared by couples continue to expand her creative vocabulary.

Her work moves comfortably between traditional and contemporary aesthetics. Some brides are drawn to classic whites, roses and structured arrangements, while others look for unconventional combinations featuring deep blues, burgundies or asymmetrical forms. Rather than choosing one aesthetic over another, Cindy looks for the point where a design feels personal while retaining a sense of timelessness. This balance allows traditional elements to be interpreted in ways that feel relevant to contemporary celebrations. The result is not simply décor that follows a trend, but a collection of details intended to remain meaningful beyond the event itself.

Lessons in the Journey

Some of TWINED&TIED’s most meaningful milestones have come through the challenges and experiences of its early years. The first wedding order reinforced the importance of clear communication, while completing a wedding order

in less than two weeks showed Cindy what could be achieved with determination, focus and careful planning. For her, however, the most valuable milestone is the evolution of the studio itself. Developing her design style, becoming more confident in experimenting with ideas and learning through every project have all shaped TWINED&TIED. The greatest reward comes when something created by hand becomes part of a bride’s cherished memories.

That sense of purpose is also reflected in Cindy’s life outside the studio. Alongside running TWINED&TIED, she continues her full-time career as an Associate Manager in an IT firm. Managing both worlds has taught her to be intentional with her time, prioritise effectively and work with discipline. She is also a trained Latin dancer, with a passion for Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba, and has performed at dance festivals including the India International Dance Congress.

Building a Cherished Name in Bespoke Celebrations

Looking ahead, TWINED&TIED aims to continue serving Goa’s growing wedding market with personalised, bespoke pieces while gradually expanding its range of offerings. The larger ambition is to build a name that couples and families associate not only with beautiful accessories, but with the thought, intention and craftsmanship behind them. For Cindy, the distinction is important. TWINED&TIED is not a factory producing identical pieces at scale. It is a creative studio where each creation is approached with care and purpose. Handmade work may take longer, but that time is part of what gives it its character.

Ultimately, TWINED&TIED is about more than accessories. From the Christmas wreath that started it all to the bespoke details created for a bride’s wedding day, each piece is designed to hold a little part of someone’s story. Through thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship, Cindy and TWINED&TIED continue to turn those stories into tangible details that can be remembered long after the celebration is over.

When that location was lost, the setback did not end the venture. The brand moved to Oscar’s Junction in Arossim, initially operating as a simple stall. Then came an unexpected discovery that would shape Goconut’s identity. An abandoned six-metre boat presented an opportunity to create something distinctly Goan. In 2023, the boat was restored and transformed into a tender coconut cart, bringing together three elements deeply associated with Goa: coconuts, boats and the coast.

The concept later moved to Delfinos in Porvorim, where Goconut continues to operate. The distinctive boat became more than a serving counter; it became an expression of the brand’s identity and its connection to Goa. With plans to expand to more locations across the state, Goconut continues to build on that original idea.

For Goconut, consistency starts long before a coconut reaches the customer. Each coconut is handpicked at the right stage of maturity to achieve the desired balance of sweet water and soft kernel. Every coconut is checked before being served, then freshly cut, chilled and handled by a team trained in hygiene.

Sourcing remains one of the brand’s biggest challenges. While a portion of its coconuts currently comes from outside Goa, Goconut is steadily working towards sourcing more of its supply locally. Its ultimate goal is to use Goan coconuts exclusively.

Local sourcing would allow coconuts to be harvested and served on the same day while also creating an opportunity to work more closely with farmers and understand how the trees are cultivated and cared for. For Goconut, this is not simply a

Corporate events represent another important part of the business. Serving fresh coconuts at a hotel or formal event requires more than simply cutting and handing over a coconut.

The process has to be hygienic, clean and efficient, with minimal spillage and no unnecessary mess. Goconut has developed a standardised service around these requirements, allowing fresh tender coconut to fit seamlessly into professionally managed events and hospitality environments.

Expanding the Coconut Experience

While tender coconut remains at the heart of Goconut, the brand continues to explore new ways of celebrating the versatility of the coconut. Its focus remains on creating thoughtful experiences around

the ingredient while allowing the brand to evolve organically. The larger vision is to build a distinctive Goan brand rooted in the coconut tree and its many possibilities, while making the Goan tender coconut something Goa can be proud to serve.

Rooted in Goa, Looking Ahead

Building Goconut has not been without challenges. From having to move on from its first roadside location to navigating inconsistent coconut quality and developing reliable sourcing, the journey has required persistence. Maintaining A-grade quality at a consistent price remains an ongoing effort, particularly in a market where many coconuts may offer plenty of water but little soft kernel or flavour.

As the concept gained attention, imitators also emerged. Rather than viewing this negatively, Gama sees it as motivation to continue improving and innovating.

Outside Goconut, his interests remain closely connected to technology, business and the outdoors. He follows developments in artificial intelligence, enjoys training and spending time with his dogs, and plays sports including table tennis and basketball. Time on the water, whether through canoeing, speedboat rides or swimming, is another favourite pastime, making the boat at the centre of Goconut feel almost inevitable.

For Gama, Goconut is still in its early stages. What began with a roadside table and an abandoned boat has developed into a distinctive Goan brand serving individuals, hospitality businesses and celebrations across the state. Its next chapter is about expanding its presence, strengthening local sourcing and exploring the many ways in which the coconut can be experienced.

A Celebration, The Goan Way

At its core, Goconut remains rooted in a simple idea: that something as familiar as a tender coconut can be presented with the care, quality and sense of occasion usually associated with luxury. In doing so, it is creating a new way to experience one of Goa’s most recognisable natural staples.

factory, serving as a professional candle production area, along with a growing customer community and a brand she hopes will take Goa-made candles to the world.

A Brand Born from Passion

The journey began in 2019, when Akankshi started experimenting with candle-making. She spent nearly a year learning, testing and developing different candles before beginning to sell them in 2020. Her vision was simple: to create genuinely good-quality candles that people could enjoy, trust and incorporate into everyday life.

Owner - Akankshi Sharma For Akankshi Sharma, popularly known as Twinkle, Candles In Goa is much more than a candle brand. It is the result of years of experience, experimentation and a deep connection with Goa. Born in Maharashtra, Akankshi has lived in Goa for around 12 years, during which the state gradually became home.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, she spent 14 years in the corporate sector before pursuing her passion for photography. After completing a diploma in photography in Goa, she worked professionally as a photographer and later spent two years in Dubai working at an educational institution and a year in Qatar as a professional photographer.

Despite experiencing different careers and countries, her connection with Goa remained strong. She eventually wanted to build something of her own, something she could create with her hands and develop around her interests.

That desire led to Candles In Goa, a business she has now devoted almost seven years to. What began with an investment of just ₹5,000 has grown into a dedicated 4-metre by 6-metre studio and mini

For her, candles were never meant to be merely decorative. Their fragrance, warm glow and ability to influence the atmosphere of a space made them particularly meaningful. Aromatherapy therefore became an important part of the brand, with candles designed to complement relaxation, meditation, candle yoga, self-care and quiet moments. She also wanted to create a women-owned and women-run business that reflected her own ideas, creativity and hard work.

The name Candles In Goa was deliberately kept simple. While she was encouraged to consider something more elaborate, Akankshi wanted customers to immediately know where the candles came from. Goa is her home, inspiration and an important part of her identity, and she takes pride in creating quality products here. Her belief is clear: some of the best candles in India can be made in Goa too.

Candles for Every Mood

Candles In Goa specialises in aromatherapy candles, scented candles and pet-friendly candles, along with customised and gifting products. Its range includes jar candles, decorative candles, customised candles, long-burning candles, wax sachets for cupboards and wardrobes, and wax melts. The brand also caters extensively to weddings, return gifts, corporate and festive gifting, hampers and bulk orders.

Much of her knowledge has come through experimentation, with every batch offering another opportunity to learn and improve. She has also discovered that building a successful business goes beyond making a good product. Consistency, listening to customers, accepting criticism and continuously improving have all become essential parts of the journey. One of the challenges she encounters is the tendency to compare candles primarily on price, without considering the cost of quality ingredients, proper testing, fragrance development and craftsmanship.

This is why the brand takes a deliberately minimal approach to packaging. Akankshi believes customers

products are developed with a focus on natural and quality ingredients, while pet-friendly and

pregnancy-friendly options are also offered with safety and comfort in mind.

Customer feedback has become one of Akankshi’s biggest sources of motivation.

Fragrance is central to the brand’s identity. Akankshi chooses scents not only for how they smell but also for the atmosphere they can create. Vanilla suits parties and evenings, while pine wood, lavender and oud create a calmer setting. Cinnamon and cinnamon-based blends are recommended for study and focus, Ocean Breeze for freshness and helping neutralise unwanted odours, and lemongrass and lemon for outdoor spaces. Coffee creates a warm, café-like atmosphere, while jasmine and lily bring the freshness of a garden indoors. Each fragrance is intended to have its own mood and purpose.

Where Craft Meets Continuous Learning

Over the years, Akankshi has developed an in-depth understanding of candle-making, from selecting the right wax and wick to studying how different fragrances behave and achieving the desired scent throw and burning experience.

Repeat orders, messages and personal experiences from customers have shown her that the candles are becoming part of people’s everyday routines. Some customers use them after long days to relax, while others incorporate them into yoga and meditation.

One particular piece of feedback that stayed with her was from a customer who told her that she had “nailed it as a candle maker” and that they were the best candles they had used so far. Such responses have helped create a customer community that extends across different parts of the world and continues to encourage her to improve.

Akankshi wants to keep experimenting with fragrances that offer different aromatherapy experiences, whether for relaxation, freshness, focus or simply creating a beautiful atmosphere. However, she does not want to add products simply to make the collection larger. Every new fragrance or product should have a purpose and meet the same quality standards.

From a Small Beginning to a Bigger Dream

The story of Candles In Goa is closely tied to Akankshi’s decision to return to her roots. After 14 years in a corporate career and professional

Rustic floral candles experiences in photography and abroad, she knew she wanted to create something that belonged to her. Starting with ₹5,000, she built the business through years of hard work, failures, experimentation and persistence.

Today, sitting in her own studio, she sees Candles In Goa as much more than a profession. She has invested her time, energy, emotions and a part of herself into the business, with every candle leaving the studio representing another stage of that journey. Goa, meanwhile, remains central to the story, not only as the place where the business operates but as the home that inspired its identity.

Her ambition now stretches beyond the state. Akankshi wants Candles In Goa to reach more customers across India and internationally, while ultimately becoming a name recognised around the world for quality, fragrance and aromatherapy. Her dream is not simply to build a large business, but to demonstrate that passion, hard work and belief can turn a ₹5,000 beginning into something meaningful, and that some of the best candles can come from Goa.

Designer

Ved Bhise Goan visual communication designer Ved Bhise blends traditional art, illustration and contemporary design, drawing from Goa’s culture and stories while exploring branding, publication, packaging, motion and visual storytelling.

Ved Bhise’s journey in design is rooted in a lasting love for drawing, storytelling and the visual culture of Goa. As a final-year Visual Communication Design student at Avantika University, he is exploring how traditional artistic instincts can evolve into purposeful design solutions across illustration, branding, publication, packaging and motion.

From Fine Arts to Visual Communication

Born and brought up in Goa, Bhise began with a strong interest in traditional art and illustration. Drawing and creating came naturally to him, but over time, he became interested in giving greater purpose to his work. Visual communication offered that direction, allowing him to combine creativity with problem-solving while exploring multiple ways of responding to the same brief.

His education at Avantika University has helped him expand this foundation and understand design as more than an aesthetic exercise.

Working on the mural design As he approaches the final year of his course, his practice spans branding and packaging, illustration, mural design, publication design and motion design. Among these, illustration and publication design hold particular appeal because of their ability to communicate through visual storytelling.

Building a Versatile Design Practice

Bhise works across both digital and traditional mediums. His digital toolkit includes Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, Procreate, Figma and Blender, while sketching and painting remain an important part of his creative process. Rather than treating the two approaches separately, he allows his experience with traditional art to influence the way he develops digital work.

Ved Bhise - Visual Communication Designer

This combination also reflects his willingness to experiment. Working across different disciplines keeps his practice varied and allows him to approach communication from different perspectives. Illustration helps him develop narratives through imagery, while publication design gives him greater

Goan Folktales - fictional publication design (yet to be published) control over how those narratives unfold through the relationship between images, typography and layout.

Design Rooted in Goa

Goa is a recurring influence in Bhise’s creative outlook. The culture, architecture, landscapes, local products and stories surrounding him provide a familiar yet expansive source of inspiration. His connection with the state can be seen in projects that draw directly from its identity and everyday experiences.

One such project was a packaging design exercise for Niro, a local Goan cashew fruit drink. Working with a product connected to the region allowed him to explore design through a subject that was both culturally familiar and locally relevant.

He also created a mural in Goa as part of an awareness campaign focused on screen time, bringing a contemporary social subject into a public visual space.

Preserving Stories Through Illustration

Among Bhise’s most personal projects is Goan Folktales, which grew from memories of the stories his grandmother shared with him while he was growing up. Many of these narratives belonged to Goa’s oral folklore, having travelled across generations through word of mouth.

Following her passing, Bhise wanted to preserve a part of those memories while paying tribute to her.

The project became an exploration of Goa’s storytelling traditions through illustration and design, giving familiar tales a visual form while connecting personal memory with a wider cultural heritage.

For Bhise, illustration is naturally connected to storytelling, while publication design provides another layer through which a narrative can be structured. His approach allows images, typography and composition to work together without necessarily explaining everything to the viewer, leaving space for personal interpretation.

www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa

Looking Towards a Design Studio

As he completes his studies, Bhise is looking to begin freelancing and gain experience through a variety of projects.

He hopes to work across illustration, branding, publication and cultural storytelling while continuing to experiment and develop a distinct visual language.

In the longer term, his ambition is to establish a design studio of his own. With a practice shaped by traditional art, contemporary design tools and a strong connection to Goa, Bhise is building towards a career where experimentation and storytelling can remain central to the work.

Vishwaroop - Conceptual illustration poster Learning Beyond the Screen

His creative interests extend beyond design software and studio work. Bhise enjoys sketching and reading, along with trekking, playing sports and running, particularly along the beach.

Time outdoors offers a break from screens and the demands of digital work, while giving him space to reset and occasionally find inspiration away from his usual creative environment.

His transition from traditional art to digital design has also been an important part of his development. Learning digital tools was initially challenging because traditional techniques were where he felt most comfortable.

The process taught him patience and encouraged him to remain open to unfamiliar methods rather than depending solely on established strengths.
