Introduction Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a soughtafter resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

Nestled in Parra, North Goa, Taverna Miguel has grown from being a restaurant within Martin’s Siesta Boutique Resort into a destination that brings together food, music, hospitality and the spirit of Goa. Founded in 2016 by Claudio Pacheco and his wife and co-owner, Tessy D’Souza, the restaurant reflects their shared journey into hospitality and their appreciation for Goa’s culture, cuisine and community.

Open daily from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM, Taverna Miguel offers a diverse culinary experience spanning Goan, Indian, Asian and Continental cuisine. Yet at its heart remains a strong commitment to authentic Goan food, warm service and an atmosphere where guests can relax, celebrate and spend meaningful time together.

Breakfast brings another selection, with favourites such as Puri Bhaji, Pav Bhaji, Upma, vegetable sandwiches, Poha and Chole Bhature. The menu further includes more than eight varieties of salads and over six types of soups, including Sweet Corn and Tomato Soup. For those seeking a meat-free way to experience Goan cuisine, the restaurant also offers vegetarian Goan preparations, ensuring that the region’s flavours remain accessible to a wider range of diners.

From Cocktails to Mocktails

The bar adds another dimension to the Taverna Miguel experience. While the former mixologist is no longer with the team, the current bar team continues to serve a selection of familiar favourites. Classic cocktails such as Piña Coladas, Margaritas and Mojitos feature alongside refreshing mocktails and straightforward choices including Rum & Coke and vodka with juice. The selection is designed to complement everything from casual dinners to lively evenings of music and celebration.

Music, Dancing and Nights to Remember

Live entertainment plays a significant role in the restaurant’s identity, with different musical experiences throughout the week.

Wednesdays bring a combination of pop, rock, slow rock, classic rock, modern hits and retro favourites, creating an evening particularly suited to dancing and relaxed gatherings.

Fridays take on a more interactive character with Karaoke Night. Guests can sing their favourite songs, dedicate music to someone special or simply enjoy the performances while dining. English and Konkani music runs from 8 PM to 11 PM, accompanied by the restaurant’s regular bar, cocktails and mocktails.

The Friday experience also includes an unlimited buffet and drinks package priced at ₹850 per person, alongside the regular à la carte menu. The emphasis remains on creating an enjoyable evening without making a night out feel unnecessarily expensive.

Each evening therefore carries its own character, allowing guests to return for a different experience throughout the week.

A Place for the Goan Community

For Taverna Miguel, hospitality extends beyond food and entertainment. The restaurant seeks to create a space where people feel comfortable, welcomed and connected.

Families and the local community are particularly important to its vision. Whether guests arrive for breakfast, a meal, drinks, live music or a celebration, the intention is to offer an environment that feels relaxed and familiar while retaining the excitement of an evening out.

Over the years, the restaurant has also become a setting for numerous celebrations, including Roce ceremonies, birthdays, Portuguese celebrations, anniversaries and other milestones. Events have been hosted at the poolside venue at Martin’s Siesta as well as its banquet hall, Rofina.

For Pacheco, some of the most meaningful moments have been less about large occasions and more about the relationships formed around the table.

taverna Miguel cocktails Reconnecting with childhood friends at the restaurant, sharing conversations over a glass of wine and enjoying moments of laughter have become among the most rewarding aspects of running the establishment.

Looking Ahead

Taverna Miguel continues to evolve through new dishes, special offers, experiences and regular entertainment. Its aim is not simply to provide another place to dine, but to create an environment where food, music and community naturally come together. At the centre of that vision is a desire to retain the restaurant’s connection to Goa while continuing to give guests reasons to return. From traditional Goan dishes and generous thalis to Asian cuisine, cocktails, karaoke and live music, the experience is designed to cater to different tastes while remaining grounded in its local identity.

Ultimately, Taverna Miguel’s philosophy is straightforward: good food should be accompanied by genuine hospitality and memorable moments. With its emphasis on Goan flavours, lively evenings and community spirit, the restaurant continues to build its place within Goa’s dining landscape, one meal, celebration and shared memory at a time.

Heritage Stay

Bright yellow Indo-Portuguese facade For more than 150 years, this ancestral IndoPortuguese villa in Pilerne has remained closely tied to the D’Souza family. Built between 1860 and 1901 by Sylvester D’Souza’s great-great-grandfather, the home has passed through four generations and continues to retain the character, craftsmanship and memories of the family that built it. Today, Sylvester and his wife, Sanaa Nalwalla, lovingly manage the property, which has been opened to guests as a holiday home.

With four bedrooms, a generous living room, a long corridor, a fully equipped kitchen, a landscaped lawn and ample parking, the villa offers the comforts of a contemporary stay without losing its historic identity. Behind its bright yellow façade lies a home shaped by generations of family life, years of restoration and a conscious effort to preserve the details that make traditional Goan homes distinctive.

A House Rooted in History

The family’s story reaches back to Portugal, where their ancestors originated from the riverland of Souza.

Like many families connected to Goa’s IndoPortuguese heritage, they eventually settled in India and established their lives here. When the land for the villa was acquired, its natural topography and geology influenced the construction. Stone was sourced directly from the property’s own quarry, making the building process more practical while giving the structure a strong connection to its surroundings.

The original builder also spent years working as a customs officer in Zanzibar. During that time, he sourced tiles and had them shipped to Goa. Some of these remain in the house to this day, particularly in the living room and two bedrooms, offering a tangible link to the villa’s earliest years. The house has endured changing generations, seasons and circumstances, retaining elements of its original construction along the way.

For the family, preserving the property was always important. Rather than allowing the ancestral home to fall into disrepair or remain closed for most of the year, they chose to give it a new purpose while keeping its history intact.

From Summer Home to Holiday Retreat

The villa was once a much simpler family summer home. Although Sylvester and his family grew up in Mumbai and later lived in Pune, Goa remained an important part of their childhood. Summer holidays meant spending nearly two months at the house, where life was comfortable but basic, without air conditioning or many of the conveniences expected today.

Sylvester developed an interest in interiors from a young age and gradually began imagining how the house could be improved without taking away its character. Around 15 years ago, the family undertook significant restoration, raising ceilings and walls, bringing in and treating long wooden logs, and working extensively on the gardens and surrounding landscape.

Over the past decade, Sylvester has taken an increasingly hands-on role in the transformation. Instead of relying entirely on a contractor, he remains personally involved in sourcing materials, supervising work and making decisions on the property.

The process has often been demanding, particularly while managing unreliable labour, material availability and timelines from a distance. Visits to Goa every few months are dedicated to overseeing the work, with video calls helping coordinate the remainder remotely.

Restoring the Past, Improving the Present

The villa’s latest renovation, undertaken over six months, introduced several upgrades while respecting the original structure. Two attached bathrooms were enlarged and retiled with Portuguese-inspired accent walls, while bedroom floors were renewed. Regular beds were transformed into poster beds, bringing a more traditional character to the rooms.

The backyard was redesigned, the caretaker’s residence was expanded and a comfortable sitting area was created near the windows. Cushions allow the space to double as a quiet reading nook, while new lamps and a carefully designed book and games cabinet add warmth to the living room.

Yet the renovation was never about making the property feel new. The intention was to make it more comfortable while allowing its age to remain visible. The result is a home where modern conveniences sit naturally alongside details that have survived for generations.

Details That Preserve Its Goan Soul

Some of the villa’s most memorable features are the ones the family deliberately chose not to change. The original tiles remain one of its strongest links to the past, while the traditional skirt curtains, once unfamiliar to Sanaa, have become a much-loved feature after seeing similar details in other Goan homes.

Golden hour by the window

The doors offer another glimpse into the practical architecture of an earlier era. One retains an old locking mechanism involving a metal bar, while another, known as an ‘Adambo’, uses a wooden bar inserted into a cavity in the wall. Such robust systems were designed to offer protection from weather and unwanted intruders.

For Simran, Co-Founder of Que Sera Sera, hospitality is about more than providing a place to stay. It is about creating spaces where people feel comfortable, connected and free to experience life at their own pace. Her journey began in Agonda, where she discovered a slower, more intentional way of living. The village introduced her to people from different parts of the world and their diverse stories, dreams and lifestyles.

That sense of community encouraged her to step beyond her comfort zone and eventually shaped the philosophy behind Que Sera Sera. Today, the brand brings together distinctive spaces centred on thoughtful design, authentic experiences and meaningful human connection.

A Philosophy of Letting Life Unfold

The name Que Sera Sera emerged from a deeply personal period in Simran’s life. As a woman, she

unfold naturally.

Hospitality Designed Around People

The initial idea behind Que Sera Sera was simple: to create a hygienic, beautifully designed and thoughtfully curated space where women travellers could feel safe and comfortable.

Having travelled herself, Simran had experienced the compromises that could come with budget-friendly accommodation, particularly when it came to cleanliness and personal comfort. She wanted to prove that affordability did not have to mean sacrificing quality or experience.

Although the concept initially focused on women travellers, it gradually evolved into a welcoming environment for people from all walks of life. Today, the spaces cater to anyone seeking comfort, authenticity and connection. Simran personally

Guests are encouraged to share meals, conversations and everyday moments, creating an atmosphere that feels personal rather than transactional.

Spaces With Their Own Stories

Each Que Sera Sera property has its own character while sharing the brand's focus on comfort, authenticity and community.

Que Sera Sera Co-Live

The brand's first co-living space is a cosy three-room home featuring private spaces, a shared kitchen, a common hangout area and a porch ideal for slow mornings over coffee.

Simran lived there for a year and personally curated the interiors with pieces collected from different parts of India. The result is a space that balances privacy with opportunities for connection.

Guests can retreat into their own spaces when they want solitude or step into the shared areas to interact with others. Many have arrived as strangers and left as friends, with some forming friendships that continued beyond their stay.

Shibui

Located in Patnem, Shibui is a restored old Goan house that was once a staff residence. Recognising its potential, Que Sera Sera brought the property back to life while retaining its rustic character.

With two thoughtfully restored rooms, Shibui is suited to couples, small families and friends looking for a peaceful, homely stay with a touch of old Goa.

Amara

Amara, meaning a place for love, reflects the brand's appreciation for Goa's heritage. Old furniture has been restored and reused, allowing the home to retain its original charm while receiving a new lease of life.

Designed for a group of four, Amara features a

Shibui and Amara are situated close to one another and are affectionately known as the sisters, with each home carrying its own distinct story and personality.

360 Agonda

360 Agonda is a hilltop boutique stay overlooking the beautiful landscape of Agonda. Designed for travellers who want to slow down and experience Goa differently, it combines sea, jungle and sunset views with thoughtfully designed accommodation.

The property features six studio rooms, a twobedroom apartment, a swimming pool, yoga shala, in-house café and common areas for working, relaxing and socialising.

Selected rooms include kitchenettes, while airconditioned rooms and reliable high-speed Wi-Fi supported by three internet connections make it well suited to digital nomads and longer stays.

experiences they genuinely enjoy rather than generic tourist guides. Guests may be introduced to local food, temple kirtans, quieter beaches, small cafés and favourite sunset spots. The team also connects them with local people and, whenever possible, shares these experiences personally.

From Bhaskar Uncle's local food to lesser-known corners of South Goa, these recommendations encourage travellers to experience Goa through its communities, traditions and everyday charm.

The Art of Slow Travel

Shibui The café serves breakfast and all-day vegetarian and vegan food, with favourites such as masala chai and banana cold coffee. Guests can work, practise yoga, meet fellow travellers or simply enjoy the views without leaving the property.

For Que Sera Sera, slow travel means giving people permission to have no fixed plan. It could mean waking up without rushing, discovering a small café, following a local recommendation or spending an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

Rather than creating structured itineraries, the brand provides the space, local knowledge and freedom for guests to explore at their own pace. This approach reflects the philosophy behind Que Sera Sera itself. Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that were never planned.

A Home for the Modern Traveller

Que Sera Sera welcomes digital nomads, solo travellers, couples, friends and small families. What connects them is a desire for more than conventional accommodation. They value thoughtful design, cleanliness, privacy and comfort while also appreciating opportunities to meet people and experience Goa beyond its busiest tourist spots.

The properties offer a balance between personal space and community. Guests are never expected to socialise, but the environment allows connections to develop naturally over coffee, meals, conversations or shared sunsets.

Discovering the Real Goa

Authenticity is central to the Que Sera Sera experience. Since the team lives in Goa, recommendations are based on places and

When Hospitality Becomes Personal

One of the most rewarding aspects of building Que Sera Sera has been the relationships created within its spaces. In three years, Simran has built four spaces from scratch, but the moments with guests remain among her most meaningful milestones.

One experience at the first co-live particularly stayed with her. A guest suffering from severe back pain from an old injury waited for Simran to wake up before approaching her in tears.

Simran helped her back to her room, arranged her medicines and continued checking on her throughout the day. The experience reinforced an important lesson: hospitality is sometimes simply about being there when someone needs help. That sense of care continues to shape the way Que Sera Sera welcomes its guests.

Growing Without Losing the Soul

The future of Que Sera Sera lies in thoughtful expansion.

Simran hopes to create more distinctive spaces across different destinations, particularly by restoring beautiful old homes and giving them a new life.

As the brand grows, the safety and comfort of women travellers will remain a priority. She envisions spaces where women can travel independently, meet new people and feel genuinely looked after.

The wider vision also includes bringing together travellers, creators, digital nomads and local communities. The aim is to grow the brand without allowing it to lose its personal character.

Ultimately, Que Sera Sera is built on a simple idea: create thoughtful spaces, offer genuine care and give people the freedom to connect naturally.

In a world where travel can often feel rushed and commercial, it offers something more personal.

A place to slow down, meet someone new, watch the sunset and experience Goa in a way that feels truly their own.

Set beside fields, a waterway and lush tropical vegetation, the heritage villa combines its original architecture and rustic charm with the comforts of a contemporary holiday home.

The property is a deeply personal project for Vivian John Desouza, an IT professional, wedding photographer, hobbyist artist and traveller. The house belonged to his great-grandfather and has remained part of his family for generations.

Having been born there, Vivian grew up with a personal connection to the property before his family moved to a new home in 2012. The old house subsequently remained unoccupied for nearly 12 years until he decided to bring it back to life in 2024.

Restoring a Piece of Family History

Believed to have been built in the late 1800s, the house was once part of a cluster of six or seven neighbouring homes. As the surrounding families gradually moved closer to the main village road, the property became the only one of its original group to remain standing. Its secluded setting, however, has become one of its greatest strengths.

The original structure reflected the practical character of traditional Goan homes. Built using stone and mud, it had thick walls, stone flooring and a traditional cow-dung-finished floor. The property was once home not only to the family but also to poultry, pigs, goats, cats and dogs.

The decision to restore it was influenced by Vivian’s own travels. An avid traveller, he regularly undertakes long road trips with friends and prefers staying in homestays and farm stays that allow him to understand the local culture, food and traditions of a destination. Experiencing such properties elsewhere made him realise that his own ancestral home offered the setting and character needed to create a similar experience in Goa.

Vintage goa, bali and tropical vibes all in one frame With ideas gathered over years of travel and visual inspiration, Vivian worked alongside an architect friend to develop the restoration. The objective was not to turn the house into an entirely new property, but to preserve as much of its original character as possible while introducing the conveniences expected of a modern holiday stay.

Restoration presented its own challenges. Since the house was constructed with interconnected mud and stone walls, removing a single stone could cause several others to loosen or fall. Vivian’s uncle, a structural and restoration civil engineer, played an important role in addressing these challenges and ensuring that the work could progress safely.

The resulting aesthetic draws inspiration from Goa’s Fontainhas neighbourhood in Panjim and the French colonial character of Puducherry, particularly in its colour palette, while the landscaping embraces a distinctly tropical identity.

The dining gives a clear view of the fields and backwaters waterways and rural surroundings, and The Village Casa sits within this landscape rather than apart from it. The property overlooks fields and a waterway connected to the wider Mandovi river system, creating a setting that is peaceful and naturally secluded. The adjoining land has been shaped by generations of the Desouza family. Coconut, cashew and mango trees planted by Vivian’s grandmother and later his father continue to thrive around the property. Two brown-rice fields lie below the house and remain cultivated, while pepper grows on the cashew trees.

The seasonal harvest adds another dimension to the experience. Cashew fruits are collected during the season, with the nuts sold and the fruit traditionally contributing to the production of urrack and feni. Guests visiting at the right time of year can also experience aspects of this agricultural rhythm, from collecting cashews and pepper to tasting fresh niro.

An Invitation to Slow Down

For many guests, the most striking feature of The Village Casa is not an amenity but the silence.

The thick mud-and-stone walls and stone floors naturally help keep the house cool, while the absence of immediate neighbours creates an unusual sense of privacy.

Instead of traffic and urban noise, guests hear the movement of trees in the breeze and the occasional calls of the property’s resident peacocks and hornbills. For visitors accustomed to metropolitan cities or busy tourist destinations, this quietness becomes an integral part of the stay.

The property has been designed for families and groups of friends, accommodating up to 10 guests across three bedrooms with attached bathrooms. A hall, fully equipped kitchen, laundry room, two balconies, garden and open areas complete the home, while a tropical landscape of broad-leaf plants and mature trees surrounds it.

Modern Comforts in a Heritage Setting

While the house retains its old-world character, guests have access to the facilities needed for a comfortable contemporary stay.

The outdoor plunge pool measures 5 by 3 metres and has a depth of five feet, providing a private space for cooling off and relaxing.

The interiors have been kept minimal, allowing the architecture and materials of the original house to remain prominent.

All three bedrooms are air-conditioned, while dual internet connections and Wi-Fi make the property suitable for workations and longer staycations. Other facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, solar water heating with round-the-clock hot water and board games.

Vivian’s own artistic sensibility is also visible within the property. One of the artworks is a threedimensional leaf composition created by him using leftover wall putty from the restoration, wood from old beds and cupboards, and leaf forms inspired by the tropical plants surrounding the house. It is a personal interpretation of the property and its natural setting, created from materials connected directly to its restoration.

The Village Casa is also pet-friendly. Breakfast is provided, while additional meals can be arranged through Vinod, the property’s caretaker and cook. His chicken chilly has become particularly popular among guests. The property also has a tie-up with a local Goan restaurant for food orders, while cafés, supermarkets and the main market are only a short drive away.

Beyond the Villa

Although many guests are happy to spend their time by the pool or simply unwind at the house, the surrounding landscape offers plenty of opportunities for exploration.

Two kayaks are available for longer-stay guests who wish to explore the backwaters below the property. Cycling excursions to nearby Charao and Divar can be arranged on request, while village walks offer a slower way of discovering the area. Two scenic bridges nearby also provide picturesque settings for photography.

For those interested in the local environment, fishing and crab catching are among the activities guests can enjoy. During the agricultural season, visitors may participate in collecting cashews and pepper, offering an opportunity to engage directly with the traditions and produce of the region.

Where Heritage Meets Personal Expression

Several details throughout the house reflect its history. Guests particularly appreciate the Italianinspired tile work in the balconies, traditional red oxide balcao seating, high walls and wooden roof structure.

The family’s involvement extends beyond the physical restoration. Guests may receive homegrown brown rice and lentils prepared by Vivian’s mother, while his father often shares stories and memories connected to the house and its history. These small interactions help make the stay feel less like a conventional holiday rental and more like an introduction to a family home.

A Retreat Away from the Mainstream

The Village Casa is intended for those who value space, nature and authenticity over the bustle of conventional tourist destinations. Families, couples, groups of friends, nature lovers and travellers seeking a quieter side of Goa can find a different kind of holiday here, one shaped by village life, heritage architecture and the surrounding landscape. Having opened its doors in November 2025, the property is still evolving. Future plans include creating an outdoor seating area where guests can enjoy morning tea and coffee, as well as evenings around a barbecue beneath the stars and fairy lights.

Additional recreational elements, including board games such as carrom, are already being introduced. At its heart, however, The Village Casa remains less about constant additions and more about preserving a feeling. It is a family home brought back to life, where the cool interiors, agricultural surroundings, traditional architecture and unhurried pace offer guests the opportunity to disconnect from everyday pressures. In doing so, it presents a quieter, more intimate way to experience Goa, one that begins not with sightseeing, but with simply being present.

Villa Stay

In the quieter landscape of Canacona, South Goa, Riverview Villa offers a different kind of holiday experience, one centred on privacy, nature and the simple pleasure of having time to slow down. Owned by designer and hospitality enthusiast Shefali Mahadik, the private riverside retreat was created as a home away from home, combining thoughtful design with the warmth and ease of a well-equipped residence.

For Shefali, the idea grew from a longstanding appreciation for beautiful spaces and environments that make people feel comfortable. Rather than creating a conventional holiday rental, she envisioned a place where families and friends could cook together, share meals, have long conversations or simply spend time doing very little. The result is a residential-style stay that encourages guests to settle in and experience a more unhurried side of Goa.

Designed for Comfort and Unhurried Living

Riverview Villa features two well-appointed bedrooms alongside inviting living areas and spacious common spaces. A fully equipped kitchen and dining areas give guests the freedom to enjoy meals at their own pace, while modern amenities make the villa suitable for both shorter holidays and extended stays.

The interiors balance practicality with a relaxed residential character. Every space is designed to feel lived-in and welcoming rather than like a temporary accommodation. Guests can settle into the rhythm of the property, whether that means preparing a meal, gathering around the dining table or finding a quiet corner to read.

The experience is supported by a dedicated team that handles daily housekeeping and prepares breakfast, allowing guests to spend less time on holiday logistics and more time enjoying their stay. This attention to everyday comfort is central to the villa's approach to hospitality.

Life by the River

The outdoors forms an equally important part of the

Alfresco breakfast on the verandah experience. An open verandah, garden and riverside gazebo provide several places to sit back and take in the surroundings. Guests can read, enjoy a cup of tea, feel the breeze or simply spend time surrounded by greenery and the gentle presence of the river.

The outdoor spaces are intentionally informal, allowing the landscape to remain the focus. The combination of water, fresh air and greenery creates a naturally calming setting, while the changing light and scenery offer an appealing backdrop for photography and leisurely walks. The location also allows guests to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Days can be spent exploring the beaches and villages of South Goa, followed by evenings returning to the stillness of the riverside retreat.

A Base for Exploring South Goa

Riverview Villa is well placed for discovering some of the region's notable coastal destinations. Rajbag Beach, Palolem, Agonda, Talpona and Galgibaga are among the places guests can explore, alongside quieter local villages, scenic routes and riverside areas.
