technology much faster, particularly in the bakery sector, through this powerful collaboration.”

Opening the Food Forward Summit, Dr. Maha Tahiri, CEO and Founder of Nutrition Sustainability Strategies gave the audience fascinating first-hand insights into GLP-1 Medications. She emphasised the importance of placing frameworks that combine medication with nutrition and behaviour with a key focus on being supported by governments to help accelerate development and promote wellbeing.

She explains: “Saudi Arabia is leading by example in the region by putting in guidelines for Type 2 diabetes and ensuring the infrastructure is in place. Today it has 30 per cent of the market in the Middle East and Africa region which shows they’re very advanced. However, more needs to be done for others to follow in their footsteps and I urge all governments worldwide to have a very comprehensive approach

to ensure there is efficient behavioural assistance for people so they can have a healthy lifestyle.”

Also taking to the stage was futurist, strategic foresight expert, and founder of ANTICIPATE, Mathias Behn Bjørnhof, who looked to the future of food manufacturing, navigating AI, Automation and Sustainability.

He commented: “We need to consider AI as the brain, automation as the muscle, and sustainability as the footprint of where we want to go. These are important aspects which not only offer a new paradigm for the future of food but one that can work together.”

He predicts the world is entering the era of 24/7 lights-out factories with minimal human intervention and gave an example of Unilever’s factories, which run on digital twins, and their 99.8 per cent success rate when it comes to on-time delivery.

A number of panel discussions were also held as attendees gained an understanding on the key trends of food production and manufacturing. Among the topics was smart logistics with Saeed AlSuwaidi, Founding Executive Director – OneCamel, Abdullah Alotaibi, Founder and CEO –Nabt, Rami Younes, General Manager - Swisslog AG, and Abdulaziz Alsebaie, Founder - Nommas.ai, saying that companies must always think about what consumers want with a focus on embracing technology that will help produce and deliver fresh food more efficiently.

NEOM Investment Fund (NIF), the investment arm of NEOM, revealed a strategic investment in Liberation Labs, a global pioneer in precisionfermentation biomanufacturing. The partnership will set the foundation for Liberation Labs to support Topian, NEOM’s food company, in designing and developing an advanced precision-fermentation facility in the Kingdom.

Liberation Labs develops and operates purpose-built biomanufacturing facilities that utilise precision fermentation to produce basic food ingredients. The process offers a scalable and sustainable solution to traditional food production methods and can be used to produce highvalue proteins without the need for animals.

Away from the stage, over 550 global businesses showcased their innovations at the venue with visitors getting a first-hand view on products and services on tomorrow’s food manufacturing. It also provided an

opportunity for companies to forge new business relationships and attract investment.

Faiz Ahmad, owner of MAFA company, which offers competitive solutions and services in the F&B industry said the event is a key platform to widen its reach to new markets from around the world.

He said: “Participating in this show has been extremely beneficial, connecting us with international clients and allowing us to begin exporting our locally produced machines to other markets. There’s a clear corre-

lation between our growth and Saudi Arabia’s strategic expansion in this sector.

Looking ahead, we are continuing to expand internationally. We’re bringing in advanced technologies from Germany, implementing them locally, and exporting globally.”

The SaudiFood Manufacturing returns for its third and final day on Tuesday with show timings from 2pm –10pm daily. Tickets to the event are complimentary for trade professionals are available on

MINI MOTOR S.P.A. COMPACT, VERSATILE, STAINLESS STEEL SERVOMOTORS Components to Boost Your Plant’s Performance

The food processing sector is an industry where strict regulatory requirements have a powerful impact on production. This forces manufacturers of industrial machinery to comply with stringent protocols and undergo frequent certifications. As a result, it is crucial for design teams to rely on high-quality, dependable components.

The Mini Motor Stainless Steel Line offers a state-of-the-art solution for drives operating in critical environments. These motors are designed for direct contact with food production and can withstand frequent high-pressure washdowns. With an IP69K protection rating, our AISI 316L stainless steel servomotors can be equipped with either a 2-pole resolver or an absolute encoder when paired with a drive.

Born from the Emilia-Romagna region’s long-standing tradition in food processing, where Mini Motor’s manufacturing plants are located, the SS Line has been refined through real-world customer applications, particularly in the dairy sector. This includes systems where servomotors are either immersed in liquid foodstuffs or exposed to aggressive cleaning agents and high-pressure washing.

The SS gearmotors provide a wide range of reduction ratios in right-angle and inline configurations, available in both worm and planetary variants. The smooth, polished surfaces of these servomotors fully comply with EHEDG hygiene guidelines. This same design

philosophy, which eliminates edges and corners, has now been extended to the associated gear reducers.

Other Mini Motor Lines for HighPerformance Plants

F Series – IP67 Protection and Food-Grade Compatibility

F Series motors are built with an epoxycoated aluminum body, complemented by stainless steel screws, hubs, and food-grade lubricants. This configuration ensures IP67 protection, making them ideal for applications that require regular washdowns, such as conveying, dosing, portioning, and packaging systems. This design minimizes contami-

nation risks and simplifies sanitation activities without compromising durability.

DBS – Brushless Servomotors with Integrated Drive

A flagship Mini Motor product line, the DBS series combines all the benefits of brushless technology with an integrated drive. Their high performance, low energy consumption, and extensive customization options make DBS an ideal component for processes demanding both efficiency and versatility.

Available in four power ratings—125 W, 235 W, 345 W, and 660 W—the latest-generation Mini Motor brushless

on SMI stretch-blow moulders. Size changeover operations to switch from one type of bottle to another are extremely simple and fast as it is sufficient to replace the plug section in the mould.

Focus on the EBS KL ERGON series

The rotary stretch-blow moulding system from the EBS KL ERGON series is a state-of-the-art, intelligent and interconnected system, equipped with the most modern automation and IoT technologies, with strong eco-compatibility characteristics and different benefits.

Management and control benefits

The system supplied by SMI uses an advanced automation system called MotorNet System®, which ensures the constant maintenance of the optimal processing parameters during the entire production cycle, allows the direct modification of the machine settings from the operator panel, simplifies format change operations and offers the possibility of temporarily disabling one or more moulds if necessary.

Energy – saving benefits

The stretch-blow moulder is quipped with a system of energy-efficient thermo-reflective panels in composite ceramic material, positioned both in front and behind the lamps, which allow uniform heat distribution. The stretch-blow moulding carousel is equipped with motorised stretch rods controlled by electronic drives, which guarantee precision in operations and energy savings (no compressed air is needed and the power consumption is lower than solutions with linear motors).

Production efficiency benefits

The EBS KL ERGON stretch-blow moulder is equipped with high-performance valves and low dead volumes (-50%) which ensure reduced pre-blowing and blow moulding times and better quality of the bottles produced. The blow moulding machine

also adopts a series of measures capable of reducing the level of wear of the components to the benefit of production efficiency, such as the gripper handling system based on springless preform grippers/bottles equipped with desmodromic cams and plastic bearings.

Benefits for operator flexibility

Thanks to the preform feeding system

equipped with adjustments by means of numerical position counters, format changeover operations are simple and fast. Even the format change operations, to switch from the production of traditional bottles to bottles without a label, are extremely simple and fast as it is sufficient to replace the graft section in the mould.

THE ART OF DRINKING, REDEFINED

"There cannot be a good way to live where there isn’t a good way to drink.” This philosophy is the foundation of Fab Bere Facile, an Italian company that has transformed an idea into a unique experience. Our mission is to offer an innovative, practical, and elegant product. Thanks to a patented cap that splits and attaches to the base of the bottle, each product transforms into a glass. It’s a simple gesture that combines functionality and design.

“Turn, Open and Enjoy” is our slogan, because drinking should not just be an act, but a pleasure to be savoured.

Our products are crafted from Pyrex glass, shaped using the ancient technique of artisanal glassblowing. All plastic materials are food-grade certified, ensuring safety and integrity over time. Our grappa, brandies, and rums retain their organoleptic characteristics, offering authentic sensory experiences.

Established in 2010, our invention was recognized at the “Geneva Inventions” fair, where Be-Re received the “Best Italian Creativity in the World” award, along with the International Jury’s Gold Medal. This achievement positively confirms the value of our innovation. Furthermore, since 2024, we have been part of the Register of Italian Excellences, which protects and promotes Italian brands and product quality, and informs citizens about “Made in Italy” innovations.

ZACMI SETS COURSE FOR GULFOOD MANUFACTURING 2025 WITH BE-FILL: QUALITY FILLING TAKES OFF

After an effective “alien” launch campaign and a “space-age” debut in Munich, ZACMI – a global leader in filling and seaming lines for the food & beverage industry – is bringing its latest technological masterpiece to Dubai: Be-Fill, an electronic, volumetric rotary filler designed to redefine standards in canned-beverage production.

While the machine won’t physically touch down at the show, Be-Fill will dominate the dialogue with ZACMI’s experts, offering visitors a fresh opportunity to discover how the company is launching itself into orbit in the beverage arena.

Maximum versatility

Be-Fill is capable of processing a wide variety of drinks:

•beer and carbonated beverages (between 2°C and 18°C) •energy drinks •juices and still products, in hot-fill up to 90 °C or cold-fill.

The machine handles aluminium and tin-plate cans with heights from 80 mm to 200 mm. Whether the product is sparkling or still, hot or cold, dedicated filling valves ensure optimal performance for each category.

“Extra-ordinary” performance

Available with 50 to 128 valves, BeFill can be integrated into a synchronised block with a seamer, also manufactured by the Parmese company.

Format changeovers are lightningfast: the machine switches from

can-end 200 to 206 with no manual adjustments, drastically cutting downtime.

All monoblock movements – from infeed conveyor through filler to seamer –are driven by brushless technology for perfectly synchronised, smooth operation.

Precise dosing, minimal waste

The electronic volumetric system measures the exact volume in every can, guaranteeing accuracy, repeatability and reduced product loss.

Hygiene and simplified maintenance

Product is fed from an external buffer tank via pump, keeping internal accumulation volumes low.

Valves are fixed to the carousel with just two screws and have no external pneumatic connections, making removal quick and external surfaces easy to clean.

Three valve types safeguard performance and product integrity:

•dual-channel flushing valves to minimise oxygen pick-up in oxidationsensitive products while optimising CO2 consumption

•single-channel valves for standard products

• internal-recirculation valves for the pre-heating required in hot-fill applications.

A purpose-designed lower manifold optimises gas and liquid flows, reducing lubrication and maintenance needs.

An innovative empty-can ejection system and easily removable hygienic covers further streamline upkeep.

Optional liquid-nitrogen dosing is available for producers seeking extended shelf-life and rigorous quality standards.

An invitation to look beyond Drop by the ZACMI stand at Gulfood Manufacturing 2025.

LABEL-FREE BOTTLES: THE NEW ECO-DESIGN SOLUTION

In primary packaging solutions, sustainability is expressed through creativity, with the design of visually appealing containers that capture consumers’ attention, and through functionality, with the development of lightweight, rPET, and label-free bottles.

In Portugal, Carvalhelhos, a company that has always prioritized sustainability and environmental responsibility, produces new PET and rPET containers with and without plastic labels, thanks to the EBS 8 KL ERGON stretch-blow moulder by SMI

Carvalhelhos blow moulder not only produces traditional PET and rPET bottles that require label application, but it is also equipped with specialized moulds designed by SMIMEC for the stretch-blow moulding of 0.33 L, 0.5 L, and 1.5 L flat-bottom rPET bottles without paper or plastic labels. This eco-friendly solution eliminates the need for glue and additional paper or plastic materials, simplifying

the recycling process and ensuring higher purity in recycled PET.

The area dedicated to the label has been removed, eliminating the ribs typically found in traditional bottles. Therefore, an innovative combination of embossed and debossed engravings on the bottle body provides additional space for the brand logo and essential product information, which would traditionally appear on a label. This approach also allows for the inclusion of information in braille.

Labels-free bottles. Advantages.

For the environment and the consumer:

• eco-friendly solution, as the PET bottle is 100% recyclable

• better compliance with environmental regulations regarding recycling

• easier recycling process, since there is no label to remove. Even when made from recyclable materials, labels on traditional bottles must be separated from the container during recycling.

• no need for glue in label application.

• reduced packaging waste, resulting in less material to recycle.

For the bottler:

• reduced costs for raw material purchases (labels and glue).

• lower storage costs for raw materials.

• simplified and optimized production process, as a labelling machine is no longer required.

• easier and more efficient PET recycling, since there is no need to separate the label from the container.

SMI, through its subsidiary SMIMEC, takes care of the entire production phase of the moulds installed on stretch-blow moulding machines. To meet the needs of customers who wish to produce both traditional bottles intended for label application and bottles without labels, SMIMEC manufactures special couplings to be inserted in the moulds mounted

New multi-fruit line from OMIP

‘BUY ONE GET MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS FREE’

Are you wondering whether it is possible to core, pit, slice and peel multiple fruits in a single solution? Wonder no more because we have the answer for you,” claim the Italian OMIP and Boema and the Polish FME Food Machinery Europe.

The collaboration between the three companies started about five years ago. “We offer a complete end-to-end solution which allows to use state-of-the-art machines dedicated to core, pit and slice several fruits, for instance, stone fruits, and then peel them using high-pressure steam.”

“The line is suitable for large producers who diversify their product range throughout the year. So far, it has been adopted in se-

veral countries around the world and customers are very satisfied with it: compared to mechanical or chemical peeling, steam peeling guarantees a 20 per cent higher yield,” the three companies add.

“In addition, this system is costeffective because it provides you with the highest yield possible and the best quality product obtainable, while eliminating the often difficult and expensive problem of water treatment, as this system excludes the use of chemicals such as sodium hydroxide.” “To find out more about this solution and be part of those who choose the best, visit us at this

year’s edition of the Fruit Logistica exhibition in Berlin.”

OMIP, founded in 1971, is targeted to all the fruit processing companies which need to have a more reliable product, built with quality materials and great robustness, where the cost of production, as well as that of the workforce, is minimized. For this reason it is focused in the design and construction of machinery characterized by simplicity of operation, versatility and reduction of costs.

tional continuity and efficiency for its clients. This customer-focused approach confirms the company’s philosophy: to innovate not only in products but also in service.

The excellence of italian innovation

The story of the PND mango peeler is a shining example of how the company is capable of creating solutions

that significantly improve the modus operandi and efficiency of hundreds of companies in the fruit processing world. With a constant focus on sustainability and efficiency, PND reaffirms itself as a benchmark in the sector.

To complete the mango line, we find the machine SS8, designed for destoning and cutting mango into slices, fingers and chunks, which processes 40 fruits per minute. It is a semi-automatic machine, very simple in use and maintenance, versatile and incredibly fast in changing cuttings thanks to replacement of cutters and plungers. The operator loads the product and the automatic mechanism pushes the product through the cutter, allowing the product to be cut and output on the appropriate belt. For a complete line we recommend the use of a peeling machine and two SS8 cutting machines, one for destoning and the other for slicing or chunking.

ASTRA: REDEFINING FRUIT PROCESSING EFFICIENCY WITH SMART PEELERS

For over three decades, ASTRA Inc. has been at the forefront of fruit-processing innovation. Founded in Japan in 1991, the company specializes in the development and manufacture of automatic peelers designed for professional use in food factories, hotels, restaurants, and catering facilities. ASTRA’s flagship models — the KA-700H and KA-750PM series — are now used in more than 65 countries, transforming the way fruits are peeled and prepared for further processing.

Precision and simplicity combined

Unlike conventional machines that require complex setup or frequent adjustments, ASTRA peelers are re-

markably easy to use. The operator simply mounts the fruit, presses a button, and the peeler automatically removes the skin in a matter of seconds.

The patented blade system follows the natural contour of the fruit, ensuring minimal waste and a clean, smooth finish.

The KA-700H, with its compact 30 cm × 30 cm body, is ideal for small workspaces such as test kitchens, cafés, or small-scale production lines.

Despite its size, it handles a wide range of fruits — from apples, pears, and kiwis to citrus and persimmons — all with simple setting changes.

The KA-750PM, a heavy-duty model with a powerful motor and reinforced structure, is designed for larger or thicker-skinned fruits such as pineapple, mango, and melon.

It also performs well with other tropical fruits like pomelo, offering versatility for processors who handle diverse product lines.

Tropical Food Machinery is the development of Aroma Recovery System, an innovative and compact automatic machine that can be integrated into new or existing production plants. The system does not involve waste of juice and can extract and concentrate natural aromas and essences that would, otherwise, be lost in the juice extraction process. The extracted aromas can be reintroduced into the product

during the final processing stages, improving its characteristics, or it can be sold separately with an exceptionally fast return on investment. Indeed, high-quality natural flavours can com-

mand a considerable price for use markets such as food, beverage, and cosmetics.

KNOW THE MARKET, KNOW THE PEOPLE AND DELIVER THE BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

Ahmed Mohamed, Vice President of Sales MENA region at Cama Group explains how local knowledge, class-leading technology and exceptional regional support combine to deliver best-in-class packaging technologies to a growing and highly demanding region.

In this interview Ahmed Mohamed explains how simply offering a product or a service is not enough.

Are there particular regional market or industry challenges?

Of course, the MENA region presents both exciting opportunities and unique challenges, one of which is the need for adaptable packaging solutions that can meet rapidly evolving consumer preferences. There’s also a growing demand for more sustainable solutions, localized branding, and portion-

controlled packaging, especially in the food and beverage sector.

Cama has seen significant successes in the region, what is driving local investment and expansion?

Many countries are pushing for inward investment, including Saudi Arabia

and Dubai, where there is emphasis on automatic machines for packaging and other traditionally manual processes. Indeed, many local companies are buying automated machinery to reduce their reliance on human resources.

What do MENA customers want from their machines?

Like our global client base, customers in the MENA region are looking for efficiency, flexibility, and future-proof technology. They want machines that can handle multiple SKUs, accommodate faster changeovers, and integrate seamlessly into existing production lines. Reliability is critical, too, as downtime directly impacts supply chain performance. There’s also a growing interest in compact designs that maximize floor space without compromising performance.

What do MENA customers want from their machine suppliers?

Beyond the machines, MENA customers expect strong partnerships. They value suppliers who offer local presence, responsive support, and training capabilities. Being available postinstallation and providing proactive service and maintenance is essential, too. Customers also seek suppliers who understand regional market dynamics and can provide customized, scalable solutions tailored to their specific needs, whether they are SMEs or large multinationals.

Looking at the events at which you exhibit in the region, such as Gulfood and Saudi Food, what technologies from Cama Group will be of particular interest to the companies attending?

This year our focus is very much on our advanced robotic packaging lines, which are known for their high speed, flexibility, and precision. We’ll showcase how Cama’s machines support Industry 4.0 integration, offering intelligent diagnostics, realtime performance monitoring, and remote assistance.

We have recently augmented our robotic offering with the introduction of our Automatic Carton Loading (ACL)

technology. This comprises a collaborative three-axis robot that automatically loads the carton blank magazines on our packaging machines.

Offering even great strength, reach and agility, it takes over what is traditionally a difficult, repetitive and onerous manual process. The technology integrates seamlessly with our machines and can be adapted to fit within available factory real estate. And for modern integrated packaging operations, it can communicate with upstream and downstream machines, so it can prepare to receive pallets transported by AMR (mobile robot).

Modularity and scalability are also key. Our systems are designed to evolve with our customers’ production needs and visitors will see how our technology addresses not just the packaging of today – but anticipates the demands of tomorrow.

Finally, What CAMA solutions and technologies are particularly popular in the region?

Our IF Series integrated robotic loading units and BTG secondary-packaging platforms hit a real sweet spot. In many factories, automated secondary packaging is relatively new, so we

often face restricted or interestingly shaped real estate in which to install our solutions. For this reason, our smaller monobloc machines, which are still capable of high-speed operation, are particularly popular.

These solutions combine robotic precision with modular design, allowing for flexible configurations tailored to different product types, from confectionery to ready meals and dairy. We’re also seeing growing interest in our sustainable packaging solutions, especially those that support plasticto-carton transitions and eco-friendly formats.

MARTINI 2025: LISTENING, EVOLVING, EXPANDING

With over 50 years of experience in weighing and packaging systems, MARTINI continues to shape the future of the industry — with respect for its origins, a solid technical foundation, and a constant drive to improve. In 2025, our vision remains clear: evolve by listening more, responding faster, and reaching further. The international profile we’ve built is a platform for expanding into new markets, industries, and applications.

Growing with Purpose

We’ve recently acquired new land and planned the doubling of our production facilities, allowing the simultaneous assembly of multiple lines and shorter lead times. More than just a technical investment, this expansion

reflects our commitment to offering a dynamic workplace — where experienced professionals and young talents can grow together.

Innovation, for us, comes from diversity — of skills, but also of perspectives. Change has always been part of our DNA, driving decisions and inspiring constant improvement.

Listening Comes First

We don’t begin with a standard solution. We begin by asking the right questions. Every production line and

packaging process has unique challenges, and we tailor our technology accordingly.

Our R&D and technical teams develop custom layouts, components, and configurations that deliver maximum value. This customer-first approach strengthens relationships and positions us as not just a supplier, but a reliable, long-term partner.

Connected Support & Smart Technology

Alongside mechanical innovation, we invest in smart connectivity.

One of our most recent additions is the Fault Prevention (FP) system — a secure platform for remote monitoring and diagnostics, designed in line with the latest cybersecurity best practices.

FP allows real-time support and screen replication across devices. It also sends automated alerts for maintenance, alarms, or status updates — enabling proactive plant management.

But technology is only part of the equation. Our after-sales support is a core strength: expert technicians are ready to travel quickly for on-site service in case of unexpected stops or scheduled maintenance, while remote specialists offer fast, secure interventions without delays.

This hybrid model ensures minimal downtime and peace of mind for our customers — wherever they are.

Sustainability Through Monitoring

We’ve also introduced a new Energy Monitoring module, which tracks:

• Total and per-phase energy use (kWh)

• Real-time power (kW), voltage, current, and power factor

This helps clients cut waste, improve efficiency, and support their sustainability goals — which we fully share.

A Human Approach to Technology

At MARTINI, we believe in technology that listens — built around people, not just processes. Every solution starts with understanding, and ends with real results.

MARTINI. Listening. Evolving. Delivering packaging excellence, worldwide.

GPI’S TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS FOR PACKAGING AND CARTONING FOOD PRODUCTS

GPI offers a wide range of secondary packaging systems for the food industry, providing solutions that are standout for high speed, ease of use, accessibility, and easy maintenance. customer satisfaction is GPI’s top priority, and we guarantee responsive support, including remote diagnostics and on-site assistance.

GPI is driven by innovation, customization, and reliability-values that merge with passion, experience, and sustainability.

GPI (Geo Project Industries) offers customized solutions for industries operating in the food supply chain. Our technicians design, build, and

install fully automated food packaging systems for our clients, perfectly adapting to the needs of their facility and the production line they integrate into.

Our machines can be installed individually, integrating into an existing line, or we offer all-in-one, robotic monoblock solutions. This versatility, combined with our constant focus on technological evolution, allows us to

respond quickly and promptly to our customers’ needs, always ensuring compliance with the highest quality standards, essential when operating in the complex and competitive food industry.

Among the most high-performance solutions offered by GPI, the MIRPSC case packer undoubtedly stands out. It allows companies to manage the fully automated and modular

process of forming, filling, and closing three-flap boxes using a compact, all-in-one machine. This case packer stands out for its modularity and the ability to integrate all functions within a single monoblock machine. The box filling process is managed by robot pickers that pick products from the conveyor belt and insert them into the cartons formed by the monoblock’s erector unit, ensuring extremely accurate and precise movement, also suitable for packing products contained in flexible or particularly delicate primary packaging. Robot pickers can be equipped with dedicated vision systems to verify the correct positioning of the products to be boxed.

GPI also offers cartoning machines designed to quickly and safely carton products that require highly complex packaging solutions. This is the case with the CR10 cartoner, which meets a wide range of needs and offers the possibility of creating resealable cases, display boxes, or other particularly aesthetically appealing solutions. The cartoner operates by using pre-glued cartons that are opened and then filled by pushing the products inside through the only open side. The machine can be designed to adapt to the speed of the company’s production line and the specific needs related to product characteristics.

All these solutions are designed for case packing or cartoning inside preformed cartons, but GPI has also developed models capable of handling the formation of wrap-around boxes, i.e., packages formed directly around the products they contain. This is the case with the WR43 case packer, which starts with a pre-cut flat cardboard box prepared by the machine as a sort of tray. The previously grouped products are transferred onto this support, which serves as a base. The machine then folds the cardboard around the items, thus

forming a complete box or a bottomand-lid box.

All GPI models are designed to be easy to use, capable of adapting to the needs of the production lines on which they are installed, and capable of facilitating format changeover procedures. Additionally, they are equipped with a dedicated HMI interface that simplifies operators’ work and allows them to monitor the cor-

rect execution of all activities at any time. It also integrates effective and simplified troubleshooting management, allowing direct communication with GPI’s customer service team, ensuring timely support.

based, and gluten-free snacks, making tortilla chips a smart investment for manufacturers looking to tap into a booming industry.

In the Middle East, where the food industry is expanding rapidly, tortilla chips present a lucrative opportunity. Several leading snack manufacturers in the region are actively exploring this segment to diversify their portfolios. This growing interest stems from the fact that tortilla chips have historically been dominated by a single global producer, leaving enormous potential for local and

regional manufacturers to establish themselves in the market. Unlike other snack products that require hard-to-source ingredients, tortilla chips can be produced with widely available raw materials. Additionally, while their energy consumption is comparable to potato chips, their water usage varies significantly: when using corn flour, water consumption is around 0.5 liters per kg, whereas cooking whole corn increases the usage up to 8 liters per kg. This difference makes them a highly strategic product in regions where water conservation is a priority.

Moreover, one of the biggest advantages of tortilla chips is their efficiency in production. Unlike potato chips, which yield only 250g of chips per kilogram of raw potatoes, tortilla chips offer a 1:1 production ratio—meaning 1 kg of raw material produces 1 kg of tortilla chips. This reduces food waste and improves profitability.

How Are Tortilla Chips Made? Choosing the Right Production Method

Tortilla chips are made using a straightforward yet highly efficient production process that involves

masa preparation, sheeting, cutting, baking, frying, seasoning, and packaging. While most of these steps remain the same, the key difference lies in how the dough is prepared. Manufacturers can choose from three distinct methods, each with its own advantages:

1. Corn Cook Method: Traditional & Cost-Effective

This classic method starts with dry corn, which is cooked, simmered, and soaked before being ground into fresh masa. While it requires additional cooking equipment, it provides complete control over the process and can be highly cost-effective in regions where whole corn is significantly cheaper than corn flour.

2.Masa

Flour Method: Fast & Simple

For a quicker and more streamlined process, manufacturers can use preground corn flour instead of whole corn. This method eliminates the cooking phase, reducing processing time and equipment costs, making it an ideal choice for manufacturers looking for a fast, efficient setup.

3.Continuous Masa Production Unit: The Future of Masa Production

The Continuous Masa Production Unit is a cutting-edge solution that produces fresh Masa in minutes rather than hours. By eliminating the traditional soaking and cooking phases, this method dramatically boosts efficiency, reduces water consumption, and lowers production costs.

When choosing between these methods, manufacturers should consider local raw material costs. While the corn cook method requires a longer production cycle, it can be the most cost-effective in regions where raw corn is cheaper than corn flour. On the other hand, the Masa flour and Continuous Masa Production Unit methods streamline production, making them attractive options for facilities prioritizing speed and operational efficiency.

THE STAINLESS STEEL BACKBONE OF MODERN FOOD PROCESSING

In the high-stakes world of food and beverage production, profitability and consumer safety hinge on two critical factors: process efficiency and uncompromising hygiene. The components—valves, pipes, and cleaning systems—form the critical backbone of any processing plant. Armaturenwerk Hötensleben GmbH (AWH), a German specialist, is demonstrating how high-quality stainless steel engineering is solving the industry’s toughest challenges.

AWH, certified under DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, stakes its reputation on “Made in Germany” quality, providing precision components for the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors.

While their portfolio is vast, spanning from hygienic flanges and butterfly valves to magnetic mixers (VPureMix®), two areas of innovation stand out for their impact on food technology.

The first is advanced Cleaning Technology. AWH’s TANKO® series offers a sophisticated range of jet cleaners and spray heads. These automated systems are vital for ‘Cleanin-Place’ (CIP) protocols, ensuring that tanks and vessels are sterilized effectively and efficiently, eradicating contamination risks and minimizing downtime—a non-negotiable in food safety.

The second is the optimization of resources through ‘Product Recovery Technology. In food production, significant amounts of valuable product can be left clinging to the inside of pipelines during changeovers. AWH’s

product recovery systems use a specialized ‘pig’ (a fitted projectile) to force this residue through the pipe, recovering near-100% of the product.

This technology represents a major leap in sustainability, drastically reducing waste and maximizing yield.

By focusing on innovative, durable solutions for cleaning, product recovery, and fluid handling, AWH is not just supplying stainless steel; it is engineering the reliability and efficiency that modern food technology demands.

LINE AUTOMATION: FROM MANUAL OPERATIONS TO FULL AUTOMATION – RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Automating a packaging line means much more than simply increasing speed: it means transforming the entire production approach by improving flow, reliability, and safety. Today, packaging machines can achieve performance levels that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. But machines alone are not enough: true efficiency lies in the harmony of the entire line.

One common mistake, especially in projects where the transition from manual to automated processes is still ongoing, is to underestimate conveying and buffering systems. And yet, just like the human circulatory system keeps the body in balance, conveyor systems are the beating heart of production: they connect machines, compensate for operational differences, and prevent bottlenecks.

Buffering solutions like our BAT-Buffer or multilayer FIFO belt systems can absorb production fluctuations, keeping the line output consistent. They are a fundamental element in the shift from manual management to full automation, as they ensure continuity, reduce human error, and minimize downtime.

They also improve the handling of unforeseen events such as micro-stop-

pages or format changes, and support fast reconfiguration of the line when needed. This leads to greater flexibility and operational resilience— two essential assets in today’s fastchanging market.

M.H. Material Handling, founded in Italy in 1986, specializes in the design of these customized solutions. With nearly 40 years of experience, M.H. offers not only machinery, but also consultancy, layout analysis, and full line integration, supporting clients through every phase of the process.

The range of buffering solutions includes:

• Heliflex – ideal for buffering and conditioning;

• BAT-Buffer – a highly flexible modular system;

• 5L Multilayer FIFO – perfect for the confectionery industry, especially chocolate.

But automation doesn’t stop at buffering. Elevators, manipulators, mergers and dividers are all essential components of high-performance modern lines. These devices optimize the available floor space, improve ergonomics, and enhance operator access—factors often overlooked when productivity is the only focus.

The shift from manual to automated operations comes with risks: poor design choices, inefficient layouts, or disruptions in production flow. However, with the right technical partner and a holistic vision, these risks can become opportunities for growth.

In the Middle East , M.H. operates with the support of Novadim Food Technologies , offering tailored solutions even in evolving production environments.

IMF ROASTERS: GLOBAL GROWTH AND INNOVATION AT GULFOOD MANUFACTURING

The growing demand for highefficiency roasting solutions is driving IMF Roasters to consolidate its role in international markets. Participation in Gulfood Manufacturing, one of the most important events for the food and coffee industry, underscores the company’s strategy: to maintain a strong presence at leading trade fairs and deliver Italian technology to roasters worldwide.

In 2024, IMF recorded revenue growth of about 25%, surpassing €19 million and opening new commercial routes from Europe to Asia.

Indonesia and Malaysia are among the most dynamic markets, while in

the Middle East, Gulfood Manufacturing has strengthened long-standing relationships and generated new strategic contacts.

“Our strength lies in the ability to adapt to diverse contexts,” notes Alessandro Garbin, CEO of IMF. “We

provide tailored solutions that meet local production needs, from small artisanal roasters to large industrial plants.”

Alongside its commercial expansion, IMF continues to invest in research and development to raise quality and sustainability standards.

Among its most advanced projects is a predictive roasting-curve software, developed with the support of an international university, capable of learning and autonomously adjusting process variables.

“We created a custom platform integrated with our roasters to optimize time, resources, and efficiency,” explains Lorenzo Mosca, Head of the Technical Department. “Thanks to artificial intelligence, roasters can achieve professional results more quickly and sustainably.”

Sustainability is a cornerstone of IMF’s strategy. The company is developing fully electric models and, within its R&D program, projects aimed at eliminating fossil fuels from the roasting process. “We are electrifying gas-powered models and investing in alternative solutions to achieve zero emissions without sacrificing performance,” Mosca adds.

IMF highlights its innovations through an integrated communication strategy that combines specialized trade media, digital channels, and a selec-

tive presence at major international fairs. “We promote projects with tools consistent with our identity,” says Garbin. “Partnerships with industry magazines and a carefully managed social-media presence strengthen global brand recognition.” Customer relationships are equally vital: their feedback and success stories are collected and shared to illustrate the brand’s reliability.

Gulfood Manufacturing

Gulfood Manufacturing offers the opportunity to experience IMF’s latest R&D results first-hand: the advanced AI-driven roasting-curve management software, fully integrated with IMF roasters. “Thanks to artificial intelligence, both artisanal and industrial roasters can streamline and refine their work, achieving professional results faster and more sustainably,” Mosca concludes.
