hi! the welcome page
As we finish middle school, heading off to high school in the fall, we thank everyone who has helped us to get to where we are today. We are so grateful for each of you, who take time out of your very busy lives to look at what we create! The love and support we have been given for the past four years means the world to us. Some of you have been here since the beginning, and some of you are just starting now. No matter what, we still thank you for reading and hope you enjoyed. We will continue to send out our magazines as we make them, and hope you love them as much as we do. - Kate, Kylie, and Leah

I've changed and grown so much over the last four years, but my love of making the magazine is still going strong. I've added flute, food, & volleyball to my list of obsessions ;), but I still love to read and create like my ten-year-old self. So happy you're here! xo, Kate

So much has happened the past 4 years. I've done so many fun things both inside and outside of the magazine. I got braces, played soccer, softball, and basketball. I got to play in band concerts at school, and participate in theater more recently. I've listened to lots of music that I enjoy, including lots of Taylor Swift and the Mamma Mia musical soundtrack. This magazine has been so fun, and brought me so much joy. Thank you all so much for everything. I can't wait to see what the future of the magazine holds. - Kylie

I can’t believe it’s been 4 years -- it’s flown by fast! I’ve grown so much. 7 inches! (I checked my records) Haha! I started off as a Pokémon-loving and comic-drawing kid. Now I’m a Disney/Marvel-watching, social media creator (follow me at @l.isabelstudios), and teen artist. Since we started, I've played many softball games and went to sleep-away camp. I play the clarinet and have improved so much! I've really enjoyed drawing for the magazine. I can’t wait to continue on with this amazing magazine.

answers 1) What was the old name of Inspire to Create magazine? Our magazine was originally called KK Girls! We named it this partially to be like the "American Girl Magazine" but also include our names, Kylie and Kate represented by the KK. We changed it because we felt it limited our audience to just girls, and honestly just felt a bit old and cringy. We were ready for something new + more like our style.
2) What issue was our first Inspire to Create issue? (new name) We renamed the magazine over the summer, and then our first issue was in the fall - Sept/Oct 2020. After LOTS of brainstorming, we realized that we love creating the mag, and our mission is to inspire. That helped us with the name :).

5) How many magazines have we done? We have made 20 amazing magazines! We've poured a lot of energy into each one, and love seeing the progress and improvement as we go on.
6) What's a feature we NEVER did? We've done Photo Lab, Zoomed, and Girl Power (bios about amazing girls + women). We haven't done a "how-to" feature, maybe soon...

7) How many band teachers have we interviewed? We have interviewed 3 AWESOME band / music teachers. Ms. Thomas was our fifth grade band teacher who taught us how to play our instruments. Fun fact: we actually interviewed her twice! She was the first person we ever interviewed. Mrs. Dupuis is our middle school band teacher who has helped us improve so much the past 3 years. She makes band SO much fun, and her love of music is contagious. Third, Mr. Walton for the Meet the Musician feature. He teaches music at our old elementary school! We are so grateful for them all.
8) When did we switch from doing seasonal to bimonthly? Sept/Oct 2018. Bet you didn't know that ;). We did seasonal (Summer, Fall, etc. for a bit and then decided we wanted to do more :).
(9) Which country have we NOT interviewed people from? We have interviewed people from Spain, Kyrgyzstan, and England! Not Canada (yet ;).
(10) What's an old feature we discontinued? "Welcome to my board!" It was a cringy feature where Kylie + Kate would each design a bulletin board (in Kylie's room haha), and then readers would vote which one was better. Kate always won (sorry, Kylie). Terrible, we know.
(11) How many people have we interviewed? 37. A whole ton! So grateful for all the time and energy each interviewee has gifted us with!
(12) Which magazine inspired us to start the magazine? American Girl. Our first issues especially looked like copy-cat American Girl magazines lol. :)
(13) What was a feature on the back cover was discontinued? K or K! You would have to guess if the statement applied to Kate, Kylie or both. :) check out a similar feature in this issue's Meet the Team.
14) Which grade were Kate and Kylie in when they started the magazine? We started this journey at the very end of 4th grade, where we spent our indoor recess time in our 4th grade rooms "making our magazine". It consisted of random features. I mean, you got to start somewhere! And then look what we have now! :D
(15) What was the name of one of our past magazine mascots? Trick question: both Katherine Kenneth + Kayden Keene. It was the KK Girls magazine, remember. haha so cringy. Both did not last long and we do not have a current mascot :).

When I was very little, I couldn’t help myself but climb up onto the piano bench and tickle the piano keys. It sounded like twinkling stars. When I was in 6th grade, my best friend persuaded me play the viola... Aside from music, I love hiking, cooking, photography, coloring with my kids, and traveling.
Loves to play the violin and likes giraffes. Spending time with her family is important to her. Something she may not share with everyone is the fact she comes in 1st place in family Mario Kart races almost every time! Margaret is a great reader and loves to help others. Miss Maggie's contagious laugh always brightens the room!

Meet Elsie (12) Meet Elsie, a true mermaid who loves the water! While swimming is Elsie's true love, music has also brought her joy. She started violin when she was 5. Elsie really enjoys watercolor and shading which has helped her in understanding dynamics, texture, and color in music. Why viola? I honestly probably would have chosen violin if I hadn’t been persuaded by my 6th grade friend! That being said, I have fallen in love with the viola’s calm, rich, and deep tone it can carry. I've been playing for 24 years.
How has making music changed your life? Music has always been a part of my life growing up and continues to influence who I am. It has connected me with beautiful people from all over the world who have changed me for the better! Music allows me to express feeling and emotion without words. Alisa and her instrument
What's your favorite piece to play? If it’s a solo piece, I love viola works by Henry Viuextemps especially the Capriccio for Viola, Op. 55 and Sonata in B-flat Major for Viola and Piano, Op. 36. They are absolutely lush! For something more fiery, Shostakovich’s Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 147 mvt II is really energizing!
Any advice for other musicians who play your instrument? Really sink into the string. I think the only real advice I can give is to find a piece you connect with and play it with soul. Study it out--understand why the composer wrote it. Listen to various recordings of the same piece to hear different interpretations. Details are what really give life and texture to any piece you play!
How does having daughters who play inspire you? It is inspiring to watch my daughters work through difficult passages to the point where they master them! We learn together how to be patient with and love ourselves. To see them so confident when they perform makes me want to perform with the same strength, confidence, and passion. I hope my girls recognize the power of music in their own lives and the lives of others. Music can literally bring hope, happiness, and healing--and they can be a part of that process for themselves and those around them.

Any advice for other musicians who play violin?
How has making music changed your life?
Elsie: To play violin well will always require focused practice and to master violin takes intense dedication and focus. Maggie: It's important to pop your wrist out, make sure you have a straight bow, and most importantly have fun!
Elsie: Well, making music has taught me how to be disciplined which has helped me be a better swimmer. The more effort I give to something, the more success I have. Maggie: I really love to perform with the Pizzicato group in their shows. I felt lucky to travel to Italy to perform on famous plazas and squares and share fun music!
How does having a mom who plays an instrument inspire you? Elsie: It's inspiring to have a mom who helps me see details I couldn't see before. Maggie: Even though the viola is bigger and a bit different than the violin, both are string instruments and I love how my mom can help me understand how to use my bow and play better on my violin.
What is your favorite piece to play? Elsie: I have always liked Dvorak's Humoresque, and I also really like Kabalevsky's violin concerto in C major (current song I'm learning). It has a lot of cool details and beautiful chords. Maggie: The Puppet Show by Trott. It has lots of fancy tricks like plucking, popping of the string with your bow, and playing really fast triplets!

who's katherine kenneth?! We thought it would be so cool to have a "mascot" for the magazine. Katherine was our story character and her little brother Ryan. The two would have short "adventures" in our magazine. Now looking back, it's just hilarious.
we aren't that funny Laugh was part of "Just 4 Fun," one of our very first magazine features. The Laugh! section was a corner where we had "funny" jokes. Enjoy haha :)
entered a contest! In 2018, American Girl magazine held a contest and we entered! We did NOT win, and we were very disappointed.
welp. A blog contest... no one entered. Probably only a few people even knew our magazine blog existed! Contests were very hit and miss, and we eventually stopped doing them.

In this feature you'll learn about different passions, how to find one, and to be inspired by other people's passions. In this issue, we get to hear from Rufus + Joy, who run a small farm! They talk about farming and connecting people to their food.
Meet Rufus + Joy!
Tell us about more your passion! Farming allows us to be kids again in a way. We get to play outside in the dirt, be our own boss, and run around barefoot most of the time. We love the freedom, diversity, and beauty in gardening, and find deep satisfaction in doing the work of feeding people healthy food while also taking care of the earth. Growing food without chemicals has always been a priority and now we're learning even more about soil health and microbiology to find the most regenerative practices for our farm.

We are Rufus Haucke and Joy Miller, owners of Keewaydin Farms near Viola, Wisconsin. This is the farm Rufus grew up on. His parents bought the farm in 1976 and milked a small herd. Rufus took over the family farm and converted it into organic vegetable production about 16 years ago. We run a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture Program) as well as supply local and Madison markets with fresh produce. Joy joined the farm in 2017 while finishing her MA in Liberal Arts through Johns Hopkins University where she completed her graduate research project, "Socially Responsible Food and Ethical Food Consumerism". Rufus and Joy are both passionate about connecting people to their food and farming in unique and impactful ways.
When did you start? Rufus grew up around farming, but rekindled his love for growing food when he grew his first garden out in Colorado. Joy fell in love with farming by chance when she fell in love with Rufus and discovered how much she enjoyed working alongside him.
farming Motivation for others? Try to reframe the way you think and feel about failure. Over the last 16 years, we've "failed" at a lot of things. However, if we saw our missteps as failures alone, we may have given up by now. We've learned to see our failures as lessons etched in our minds in a very memorable way. These unforgettable lessons can make you stronger and when you share the lessons you've learned with others, you have an opportunity to lift them up as well because they don't have to repeat the same mistakes.

A tip for you: If you are interested in farming or connecting to your food, I would suggest researching farms in your area, joining a CSA, or seeking out an internship. Last summer, two young ladies from Chicago emailed us about an internship. We hadn't planned to have interns, but set up a Zoom meeting and hit it off. They spent a month living in our cabin and helping us with the CSA. They really enjoyed themselves and had so many new experiences to share. It just goes to show you what is possible when you have the courage to reach out.

How long does it take to create a magazine?
Do you do it on a Google Doc?
In the past, it would take us almost 3 months to make a single magazine! Now, we have been able cut down on how long it takes. Typically it take one month of solid work. This means basically a span of two months, with time off.
We used to! Once we got to middle school, one of our teachers (thanks Mrs. Goldberg!) told us about Canva, which is what we use now! It is SO much better for this purpose! It helps us achieve our vision for the magazine.
How did you two become friends? More than 5 years ago, in 3rd grade! Our amazing illustrator Leah and us both were all in the same class, and we all became really good friends. We are so lucky and grateful for all meeting each other and being able to create something so special!

How do you find all of your interviews?
Did you ever expect it to get this big?
We know all the people we interview! Ask everyone you know what they do, and you'll find lots of interesting careers + passions :). Then we'll match people to specific features, and usually reach out to them through email.
A great question! Of course we want as many people to read it as possible, but we are just more thankful that people even enjoy the magazine. When we were in elementary school, we would dream of our lil hobby becoming an actual magazine :).

What is your favorite part about illustrating for the magazine? I like being able to work with two of my best friends and do something I love as well (art). I also like sharing my artwork with others and getting corrections from Katé and Ky always helps me improve.
