FINDING

MYFUTURE

GabrielaCastilhano

For Gabriela, studying in the UK has been more than an academic pursuit— it has been the fulfilment of a long-held dream. From an early age, she imagined herself immersed in the British education system, and today, that vision is a lived reality, marked by growth, friendships, and deep cultural exchange.

One of the most striking aspects of Gabriela’s testimony is her appreciation for the flexibilityof the UK curriculum. Unlike the more rigid structures she encountered back home, the British system offered her the freedom to concentrate on subjects she genuinely enjoys, while still leaving space for social and personal development.

“There’s so much choice,” she reflected.“In Brazil I have to study every singlesubject. Here I can focus on thethingsthatI’m passionateabout.”

The depth of study has also left a profound impression.

Gabrieladescribes her teachersas “amazing”— educators who not only command expertiseintheirfields butalso succeedin making complex topicsengaging and inspiring.

The richness of classroom discussions, combinedwith innovativeteachingmethods, has reinforcedher desire to remain inthe UK for a longer period. So inspired by her first stintat ItchenCollegein the autumn of 2024, she persuaded her parents to allowher to return in 2025 to completeher A Levels.

Gabrielaconfesses thatshe “missed everythingabout Itchen,”particularlythe lessons, during her timeaway back in Brazil.

“I’m studyingAncientHistory this year; we’re learning aboutthePeloponnesianWars, and the curriculum incorporateshistory, government, and politicsof the time. There’s just so much depthto the learningso you get so much more out if each lesson.”

Yet Gabriela’s story is not only about classrooms and curricula. Her timein theUK has been equallydefined by therelationshipsshe has built. She has forged strong connectionswithlocalstudents, many of whom were excitedto welcomeher back upon her return. Equally transformativehas been her homestay experiencewithVicky’s family. Forming a deep bond within the first week, Gabrielahas alreadyhad traditionalculinary experiences– a full English breakfast and a Sunday roast.

“I’m so excitedto be back,” she commentedwitha grin from ear to ear.
