HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMME For students who wish to improve their English and have an authentic UK High school experience, studying with British students. For students who need accreditation for their school, we organise the full validation of school reports.

Course Structure

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is compulsory, although we will encourage students with a high level of English to take GCSE or A Level English instead. Students can take 3 to 4 additional subjects from a wide range of academic and vocational courses. Students choose subjects according to their level, interest or career focus. Students learn subject related themes, as well as skills, which are vital for academic success; these include critical thinking, debating skills, essay writing and how to study independently.

Assessment

There are regular small classroom assessments and reviews to check on students’ progress. Each student will be issued with an end of programme report, in which teachers and the tutor will write comments on student’s attendance and performance during the programme.

Support

A personal tutor is allocated to each student at the start of the programme. The tutor is available to help with all pastoral matters and can direct students to the right teacher or Head of faculties for academic issues. There is a tutorial session each week, which is timetabled and compulsory.

BUSINESS Business is at the heart of our everyday lives, and those who study any of these subjects will have a wide variety of progression opportunities, whether they choose university or employment. There is a variety of courses available to suit different approaches to learning with visiting industry speakers regularly sharing their experiences.

A LEVEL

This course studies recording, interpreting and evaluating the financial performance of a business. You will be introduced to new concepts such as incomplete records, partnership accounts and capital investment appraisal. By the end of this course you will have learnt topics such as double-entry bookkeeping and final accounts for different businesses, along with business organisation and management.

Accounting is a very useful preparation for anyone considering a Higher Education course in Accounting, Business Studies or Management. Students who enjoy the course may consider careers in accountancy, finance or banking.

A LEVEL

This course looks at how to start a new business and considers the problems faced by managers in organisations. You will consider how businesses make decisions and tackle problems, particularly in the areas of marketing, finance, human resources and production. By the end of this course you will be well prepared for Higher Education or a career in management, banking, finance or leisure.

Students with A Level Business are very fortunate in having a huge choice of Higher Education courses which they can progress (e.g. Accounting, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Human Resource Management etc). It is also a useful qualification for a variety of jobs in management, commerce or administration (e.g. retailing, leisure, financial services, government departments).

This course takes a practical approach to business, studying how a business will make and carry out decisions. Assignments will require you to carry out your own research, analyse your information and present your findings, sometimes in the form of a written report, and occasionally in a presentation to others. By the end of the course you will have studied how real companies market their products, organise their workforces, raise finance and prepare accounts.

Students with a vocational Level 3 qualification in Business are very fortunate in having a huge choice of Higher Education courses to which they can progress. This course examines the world of finance, and looks at topics such as unemployment, inflation, global warming, taxation and the EU. You will learn a number of techniques for analysing problems, and will be encouraged to develop and express your own views on what should be done to solve economic problems. By the end of this course you will have a significant advantage in Higher Education courses in Economics, Business, Law, Accounting and Management.

This course combines business theory with IT knowledge, giving you the skills required for a career in this profession. By the end of this course you will have studied marketing, customer service, essentials of IT and cyber security amongst other topics. Successful completion of this course may allow you to progress to a Level 3 qualification or an apprenticeship.

There is a wide choice of Economics degree courses at virtually all universities. The rigorous analytical approach required in Economics degree courses makes this qualification much sought-after by many employers. Additionally, the A Level is highly regarded when applying for a range of other subjects such as Law, Business, History, Geography, Accounting and Mathematics. You will find your A Level is a useful qualification for a variety of jobs in management, commerce or administration.

Students with a vocational level 2 often progress to a Level 3 qualification or to an apprenticeship.

Course overview

ENGLISH The English department at Itchen College is known for its academic achievements and the success of its alumni, with students moving on to top universities and employment across multiple sectors. There are extra opportunities for all English students including: trips; access to a variety of guest speakers and the chance to showcase your work. Students also have the option to add the Extended Project Qualification to their academic programme and pursue creative writing interests.

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced ESOL learners who wish to enhance their English proficiency across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through a blend of thematic units, interactive exercises, and practical application, participants will expand their vocabulary, master complex grammatical structures, and refine their pronunciation and communication skills for a variety of academic, professional, and social contexts.

This course explores the fascinating world of language we experience everyday. You will discover how we create our identity and make and break our relationships through language; how to see through the language designed to shape our thoughts and behaviour and enjoy the pleasure of creative, original writing. By the end of this course, you will have produced a portfolio of original writing and undertaken a research project.

You will study travel writing, imagined worlds in fiction, the poetic voice, conflict in drama and recreative approaches to literary texts. By the end of the course, you will have submitted a piece of creative writing, delivered a presentation about your writing and developed your research and project management skills.

Course overview

This course explores English Literature across time and genres, examining how writers present the nature of society and human experience. You’ll have the pleasure of reading and discussing books while developing skills of arguments and powerful communication. By the end of this course, you will have studied two drama texts including a Shakespeare Play, 21st century poetry, a poet, two prose texts and two texts of your own choice.

MediaVocational, Cambridge Technicals LEVEL 2

FILM AND MEDIA Our courses offer industry-standard facilities such as a green screen, editing software and our own radio station. Itchen Radio is run by students, with shows being broadcast weekly. Extra curricular opportunities are offered, access to a variety of guest speakers working in the Film and Media industries and the chance to showcase your work through local events and exhibitions are at the forefront of these courses. Students also have the option to add the Extended Project Qualification to their academic programme and individualise their own learning in preparation for Higher Education.

A LEVEL

Film Studies allows students the opportunity to explore a range of films from the earliest days of cinema right up to the modern age of digital filmmaking. The texts studied include films you know and love, alongside more obscure and challenging products including British and World documentary and experimental films. For each film text, you will study core areas ranging from representation and context, as well as specialist areas of study such as ideology and narrative. Once you have studied how and why films are made, you can begin to make them yourself.

This course will explore the mass media across a range of platforms, and consider the role the media plays in society today. By the end of this course, you will have explored the historical and social contexts of media products and media theories, developing your critical and creative skills. You will develop skills in print-based graphics, website building and audio and visual products.

There is a huge range of Media Studies courses available at Higher Education, some offering the chance to engage in advanced practical work and others focusing on media theory. An A Level in Media Studies will provide you with the analytical and creative skills necessary to embark on a wide range of other degree courses.

Course overview

This course is for you if you enjoy creative work using digital media. It is a practical course with work-related elements. You will develop skills in digital audio-visual media, through practical film-making assignments and producing advertising materials. By the end of this course, you will also have learned about the media industry and be ready for a Level 3 media related course.

Course overview

This is a practical course with an impressive track record of propelling its students into careers as journalists and presenters. You will develop technical production skills, such as writing and presenting content, whilst working for Itchen Radio. You will also learn about journalism and the news industry, writing for a variety of print and online publications and platforms. By the end of this course, you will have a portfolio of work and a media profile, to help you into Higher Education, apprenticeships and a career in journalism.

Art & Design - Media, Design & Production A LEVEL

Course overview

Through this very practical course you will undertake a variety of mini-projects that will develop, explore, record and present practical skills and theoretical knowledge of script writing, moving image; (visual composition, sound recording and editing), and print based design. GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Geography and Environmental Science involves exploring the planet’s scientific processes and structures, it involves studying our impact on the world and geopolitical current issues. Learning about our physical world opens a range of progression paths into university and career opportunities.

This course is for those who are interested in the impact we have on our environment. You will look at topics including the living and physical environment, energy resources, pollution, biological resources and sustainability. By the end of the course, you will have studied contemporary issues and have a good understanding of the ways in which we can protect our environment.

Course overview

This course looks at current geopolitical issues, the physical environment, the human environment and geographical skills. You will do an independent investigation in which you will incorporate your fieldwork and own research. By the end of this course, you will have studied topics such as the tectonic hazards, energy security, water security, superpower geography and globalisation.

Students with Geography A level have access to a wide range of possible career and Higher Education opportunities. Geography is one of the Russell Group’s facilitating subjects and is considered a science by many universities. IT AND COMPUTING Studying IT and Computing opens up a broad range of university courses and career choices in any and every sector you can imagine. From cyber security to app design, our IT and Computing courses will prepare you for the tech and computer industries.

LEVEL 3 (SINGLE AWARD) Course overview

This course focuses on an understanding of IT fundamentals such as hardware, networks, software, the ethical use of computers, and how businesses use IT. By the end of this course, you will have a greater understanding of how organisations use information sources, both internally and externally, and the types of information you will encounter.

During this course you will understand the core academic principles of computer science. Classroom learning is transferred into creating real-world systems through the creation of an independent programming project. You will develop a technical understanding and an ability to analyse and solve problems using computational thinking.

BUSINESS I’ve had a fantastic experience taking the Business course at college, as it wasn’t available in my home country, Latvia. Our teacher, Derrek, is knowledgeable and truly passionate about the subject. LANGUAGES Studying modern languages opens a world of experiences and opportunities. Learning about languages goes beyond translating words; it gives you a window to different cultures and experiences. As well as learning to write and speak languages you will carry out independent research, study literature and film, bringing the Spanish and French speaking world to you in the classroom.

A LEVEL

This course will allow students to speak at length in French and improve substantially on their GCSE knowledge. You will study literary texts and films, and carry out an independent research project on an area of your choice. By the end of this course, you will have gained a good foundation for speaking, listening, reading and writing in French and have participated in group and pair work throughout the course.

This course will give you the tools to significantly improve your Spanish language skills, based on your GCSE knowledge. MY JOURNEY Aurora CRIMINOLOGY Studying Criminology has been an incredibly engaging journey for me. I’ve always had a keen interest in criminal cases and often found myself absorbed in related podcasts. In our lessons, we explore various types of crime, how society reacts to them, and the theories behind why people turn to crime. It’s absolutely fascinating to see how these theories apply to real-life scenarios and how they mirror actual events. We often work in groups, which has been a great way to interact positively with my peers and enhance our learning experience. Our teacher, Dave, is a former police officer, and his first hand experiences bring the theories we discuss to life in a way that textbooks simply cannot. His insights have deepened my understanding of the subject and made the classes even more compelling.

This course concentrates on the fundamentals of art and design, by exploring the basic aspects of Fine Art, including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. ‘Live’ briefs form a core part of the course, working on creative projects for specific clients and scenarios. By the end of the course, you will have studied artists and designers in depth, and created your own portfolio of practical, client-based design briefs, enabling you to progress to Higher Education or further training.

A LEVEL

This course will introduce you to visual communication, in the context of advertising, promotion, 2D design, website design, packaging and more. You will be involved in a range of practical design tasks, involving experimentation with typography, colour, layout and image manipulation. By the end of the course, you will have a good working knowledge of industry standard software, such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, as well as having developed a portfolio of work.

Photography A LEVEL

Course overview

This course will provide you with a good knowledge of photographic theory and practice. Work will be carried out in a professional environment, with a purpose-built studio and a darkroom for student use. By the end of the course, you will be familiar with all types of cameras, as well as enlargers, lens filters, flash guns, studio lighting, black and white film, photographic processing, digital cameras, and digital manipulation using industry standard software (including Adobe Photoshop).

Progress onto Higher Education to study photography related courses at degree level. The course will also provide you with skills needed for employment in a related field, such as: working as an assistant photographer, starting your own photography business, working as a photographer for a newspaper or magazine and photojournalism.

A LEVEL

This course will cover a range of interactive approaches towards design and textiles, in which you will learn to use a diverse range of materials and techniques. Research projects focus on a range of complementary arts, allowing for the exploration of fashion and costume illustration, and research of textile history. By the end of the course, you will have undertaken research projects, explored fashion illustration, costume design and textile history. You will also have had the opportunity to specialise in either interior design, or creative fashion and costume design.

LEVEL 3

This course will cover a wide range of art and design disciplines in a practical way. Students will study 2D materials, techniques and processes, printmaking, 3D visual communication, and will work with photography briefs. By the end of this course, you will have worked with live projects, learnt art and design techniques, and will be able to understand art and design in a wider context.

LEVEL 2

This course offers students an introduction to the basic principles of art and design, providing the foundation to a Level 3 programme. Using processes such as screenprint, linocut card, wire and clay, you will be encouraged to relate your work to the work of other artists, designers and photographers. By the end of the course, you will have compiled a portfolio containing work on 2D and 3D visual communication, photography and contextual references.

Success at Merit or Distinction level will aid progression to the Level 3 Art & Design programmes. On completion of the Level 3 programmes, many students then move on to study Art & Design at degree level.

LEVEL 2 & 3

You will learn the fundamentals of drawing from a live model. You will be expected to research the work of designers, who have worked on the figure, critically analyse and reflect on your own development.

MY JOURNEY Louise TEXTILES I chose to study textiles because of my interest in fashion and a desire to make my own clothes. So far, I’ve crafted a maxi skirt and a top, and I absolutely love it! The open-door policy at the college is fantastic; the teachers are welcoming and always available, allowing us to use the facilities to complete our projects. I’ve learned numerous practical skills and techniques which have been incredibly beneficial. Additionally, I’ve made friends with many local students who are exceptionally friendly and helpful. Exploring textiles has been a wonderful opportunity, especially since it was a subject I couldn’t study back in Switzerland.

Depending on your chosen subjects, you may need an interview. Confirmation of an interview will be given along with any other useful information. Interviews can be done online via Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom etc…

You will receive an offer of a place to study at Itchen Sixth Form College once your application has been processed.

Once we have made you an offer, accept it as soon as possible and send us your deposit payment, so we can start the process of matching you with a host family.

We will give you information on your host family, as well as further information about living in the UK. Your host family will be a local family in Southampton.
