WINERIES, FOOD AND ART: DISCOVERING ITALY’S IRRESISTIBLE CHARM

In this issue of Italo Magazine, we take you to two very different cities that share the same irresistible charm. Turin, Italy’s irst capital, is illed with museums and places to explore. At the end of the month, it will also host the Slow Food event, bringing together numerous producers and a programme of talks examining how our eating habits are changing and celebrating the enduring value of the Mediterranean diet. The other city featured in this issue is Bari, which overlooks a magniicent stretch of sea and is also home to numerous theatres with a distinguished cultural tradition. Its splendid buildings, including many in the Art Nouveau style, house renowned venues such as the Teatro Petruzzelli, Italy’s fourth-largest theatre, which has welcomed internationally acclaimed performers including Luciano Pavarotti and Rudolf Nureyev. nvestire nella formazione significa guardare al futuro con responsabilità e visione, accompagnando la crescita delle persone e sostenendo concretamente le famiglie nei percorsi educativi.

nvesting in education means looking to the future with responsibility and vision, supporting people’s growth and providing tangible assistance to families throughout their educational journey. This belief lies at the heart of Italo Generations, the initiative through which Italo has chosen to recognise and reward commitment to learning at every stage, from primary school to university. It also includes specific awards for employees who complete a degree while continuing their professional activity. The project is deeply rooted in Italo’s corporate culture, which has always focused not only on the professional lives of its people, but also on the well-being of their families and the development of the wider community surrounding the company. Launched several years ago, the initiative forms an integral part of the company’s Welfare Plan and reflects a broader vision centred on sustainable growth and care for people. It is designed to provide practical support to families throughout

their children’s education and training, accompanying students and employees at different stages of their development and responding to an increasingly important need: facilitating access to education and promoting merit as a driver of both personal and collective progress. This commitment continues to expand alongside Italo’s workforce, which currently comprises more than 1,550 employees, 40% of whom are parents. In 2026, a total of 52 awards were granted, with scholarships ranging in value from €500 to €2,000 each. Some were dedicated to the memory of Giuseppe Sciarrone, a founding shareholder of Italo, and awarded to the highest-achieving students. The recipients included not only employees’ children who distinguished themselves at school or university, but also—for the first time this year— employees who completed a degree during the 2024–2025 academic year while continuing to work. This investment addresses a tangible need: helping to ease the financial burden of education, supporting families in their educational choices and, at the same time, fostering a culture of continuous development in which merit, commitment and learning become drivers of progress for individuals, families and the entire corporate community. Italo Generations reflects the evolution of Italo during its first fourteen years of operation. Having established itself as a leading player in the transport sector, the company has chosen to broaden its commitment by combining its business achievements with a clear focus on social responsibility. The project therefore represents a practical approach to corporate welfare, viewing education as an investment in the future of individuals, families and new generations, and supporting their growth both within and beyond their professional lives.

2. DOC, DOCG e IGT come bussole. 5. Esplorate i produttori.

I

Lorenzo Tersi

TEN RULES FOR WINE: 10 TIPS FOR DRINKING — AND CHOOSING — WITHOUT THE ANXIETY

T

he world of wine often seems like an exclusive club governed by extremely rigid rituals. Here are ten practical tips for approaching it with a sense of ease and curiosity. 1. Less ritual, more pleasure. Let us free the wine glass from excessive jargon. Wine is, irst and foremost, about visceral pleasure and conviviality—not a university exam. If it brings you joy, it is the right wine. 2. Use DOC, DOCG and IGT as your compass. They are not cold bureaucratic acronyms, but treasure maps. They provide a guarantee of origin and represent quality protected by law. Use them to ind your way. 3. Travel in your imagination. Every bottle is a liquid portrait of a territory, its climate and its culture. Uncorking a bottle means travelling free of charge to distant hills. 4. Fall in love with grape varieties. Do not limit yourself to the usual suspects. Italy is a paradise of biodiversity: allow yourself to be fascinated by the nuances of its native grape varieties. 5. Explore the producers. Behind every label lies an entire world. Whether they are small independent winegrowers, historic families or forward-thinking cooperatives, seek out the stories of the people who work the land.

6. Quality at the right price. Today, quality has become more accessible. It is remarkably easy to ind an excellent Italian wine that is fresh, clean, full of character and irmly rooted in its place of origin. 7. Do not be afraid of making a mistake. When standing in front of a wine shelf or looking at a restaurant wine list, do not feel intimidated or worry about other people’s judgement. Choosing the wrong bottle is simply the irst step towards inding the one you will love. 8. Red wine in summer is not a sin. It is time to break the taboo. A young, fruity red with low tannins, served chilled straight from the fridge beneath a beach umbrella, can be a deliciously refreshing experience. 9. Classics and provocations. Alongside perfect pairings such as Falanghina or Greco di Tufo with mozzarella and tomato, dare to try something unexpected. Have you ever tasted salmon and guacamole with a still Malvasia? The result may surprise you. 10. The occasion matters more than the pairing. The rules of food and wine pairing are fascinating, but the secret ingredient is always the atmosphere. The best wine is the one opened at the right moment, with the right people.

do, Cont’Ugo, Il Bruciato, Scalabrone e Vermentino.

WINE TOURISM: WHERE THE WINERY IS A WORK OF ART From north to south, new cathedrals of wine are transforming winery visits into immersive experiences combining design-led spaces, landscapes and terroirs to savour here was a time when a winery was a hidden place, reserved exclusively for production. Today, however, it is often a destination in its own right: a work of architecture to explore, a landscape to inhabit and a story to discover, one glass at a time. Throughout Italy, wineries have become places to experience—true sensory spaces where design, art, nature and gastronomy come together to turn a visit into a cultural journey. They offer an invitation to discover the local area with all the senses: walking through vineyards, entering the production facilities, tasting wines and local produce and, in some cases, staying amid the tranquillity of the vines. In Trentino, Moncalisse (moncalisse.com) represents a new icon of the dialogue between landscape and architecture. Designed by David Stulesser and Nadia Moroder, the winery resembles a contemporary sculpture shaped by the forms of nature. The curves of the vineyards and the ancient rock carvings of Monte Calisio inspired a space in which aesthetics, sustainability and technology coexist. At an altitude of 600 metres, surrounded by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards, elegant and reined Trentodoc sparkling wines are produced and presented through guided tours, masterclasses, tastings and the new bistro. In the Langhe, too, wine is being approached with a new sen-

T

sibility. Réva (revamonforte.com) interprets Monforte d’Alba through a contemporary style that respects the environment and remains deeply connected to the local area. Set among the vineyards, the winery follows an SQNPI-certiied sustainable philosophy, while the Réva Resort completes the experience with hospitality, ine dining and wellness. Its wines include Barolo crus and bottles from the Classic range: modern expressions of a land with thousands of years of history. Also in the Langhe, Pico Maccario (picomaccario.it) interprets the excellence of Piedmontese wine through an experience that intertwines landscape, contemporary art and outstanding wines. Its Nebbiolo vineyards extend across Neive, Serralunga d’Alba and Barolo. Here, in the celebrated Cannubi cru—the oldest in Italy, dating as far back as 1752—one of the most prestigious and iconic terroirs in the world of wine comes to life. In the heart of Franciacorta, Bellavista (bellavista.it) expresses art through harmony. The hill overlooking Lake Iseo contains two kilometres of underground tunnels, where the time devoted to ageing becomes an integral part of the experience. Here, architecture and landscape merge into a story of elegance and hospitality, relecting a territory naturally suited to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Alma Assemblage and the Bellavista cuvées are the most recognisable signatures of this style. Moving to the heart of Chianti Classico, Cantina Antinori (antinori.it) is a manifesto for architecture and wine culture. Designed by Marco Casamonti and seamlessly integrated into the Tuscan hills, it is home to the Antinori Academy and the Antinori Art Project, where contemporary artworks engage in a dialogue with the family’s heritage. The experience is completed by tastings, the Rinuccio 1180 restaurant and emblematic wines such as Pèppoli, Villa Antinori Riserva and Vigna sul Tetto Riserva. Also in Tuscany, Petra (petrawine.it) offers one of the most powerful representations of the encounter between wine and design. Designed by Mario Botta, the winery emerges from the hillside as a pure geometric form, becoming a distinctive

landmark on the Tuscan Coast. Between the sea, the Metalliferous Hills and mineral-rich soils, characterful wines such as Petra, Quercegobbe and Hebo are produced, together with the single-varietal wines of Montebamboli, ranging from Cabernet Franc to Vermentino. In Bolgheri, Tenuta Guado al Tasso (antinori.it) instead adopts discreet architecture, almost concealed within the earth. The new underground winery blends into Bolgheri’s natural amphitheatre, using materials and colours inspired by the surrounding landscape. Here, design supports sustainability and enhances a unique terroir between the sea and the hills, producing labels such as Guado al Tasso, Matarocchio, San Walfredo, Cont’Ugo, Il Bruciato, Scalabrone and Vermentino. There are also places where nature itself is the work of art. At Campo Soriano, between the Ausoni Mountains and the Riviera of Ulysses, Cantina Sant’Andrea (enoteca.cantinasantandrea.it) practises heroic viticulture among karst rocks and restored ancient vineyards. Here, the landscape tells its story in the glass through wines such as Hum, a cru of Moscato di Terracina DOC, Capitolium, Riflessi Rosato Spumante and Oppidum. In Sicily, La Foresteria Planeta (planeta.it) broadens the concept of wine hospitality, transforming the countryside around Menfi into a multisensory experience. Among vineyards, the sea, aromatic gardens and fine cuisine, the journey becomes intertwined with Sicily’s great cultural landmarks, from Selinunte and Burri’s Cretto to Gibellina. The stars in the glass are Planeta’s wines, from the Chardonnay of Ulmo to bottles that express the island’s extraordinary biodiversity. Finally, we arrive in Sardinia, in Alghero, where the vineyards of Podere Guardia Grande (podereguardiagrande.com) engage in a dialogue with the surrounding environment and the influence of the sea. Here, Mediterranean scrub accompanies visitors on an experience combining the estate’s wines—including Vermentino, Cannonau di Sardegna and Cagnulari or Alghero Cagnulari, a native red grape variety typical of the small area in the north-western part of the province of Sassari—with the traditional flavours of Sardinian cuisine. These wineries demonstrate that Italian wine today is far more than an agricultural product: it is an aesthetic and cultural heritage. They are places where architecture becomes storytelling, the landscape becomes a raw material and every tasting is transformed into a journey through the identity of a territory. Wine is not merely tasted: it is explored, contemplated and remembered. Above all, it is lived.

L’AGGIORNAMENTO DELL’IAA

THE IAA UPDATE

NEW GUIDELINES FOR… ALIENS Should we ever detect a genuine extraterrestrial message, there would be only one watchword: stay calm! The new guidelines issued by the International Academy of Astronautics call for rigorous veriication before anyone declares that aliens have been found. Data and analyses should be made publicly available to help contain fake news and deepfakes. UFOs remain outside the scope of the protocol and, above all, there should be no hasty reply: before sending ET a friendly “hello”, the consent of the international community would be required. For once, ghosting might be the wisest choice.

LOOKING AFTER THEIR HEALTH On returning home, it is advisable to check your pet’s paws, skin and coat and, where necessary, arrange a veterinary appointment.

VETERINARIAN FEDERICO COCCIA

OUR PETS GO ON HOLIDAY TOO: THEY NEED A GRADUAL RETURN TO ROUTINE The holidays come to an end for everyone, including our four-legged friends. After weeks spent on beaches, along trails, in meadows and on long walks, returning to the city may require a few days of adjustment. A dog that has grown accustomed to moving freely and receiving constant stimulation may appear more restless or bored. Cats, too, may be affected by the return to a quieter routine, particularly if they had more opportunities to explore new surroundings during the summer. The key is to avoid an abrupt transition from the freedom of the holidays to the hectic pace of September. Gradually reintroducing regular mealtimes and walking schedules, setting aside time every day for play and physical activity, and enriching the home environment with toys and opportunities for interaction can help both dogs and cats cope more easily with the change. Their health also deserves attention. On returning home, it is advisable to check their paws, skin and coat, look for any signs of parasites and arrange a veterinary appointment if they show fatigue, loss of appetite or unusual behaviour. With a few simple precautions, returning home can also become a new beginning to enjoy together.

INSIDE THE VIOLIN MUSEUM One of the project’s aims is to display private collections that are usually hidden from public view.

IN CREMONA

SALA EFFE, A NEW SPACE FOR ART From 19 September, Cremona will have another venue devoted to contemporary art. Located in the heart of the historic centre, in a wing of the Violin Museum, Sala Effe will open as a project designed to build connections among diverse audiences, while fostering a fruitful dialogue with both the city and the international contemporary art scene. Conceived as an open and dynamic space, it will host projects exploring innovative forms of expression. Its programme will develop along two parallel strands: curated exhibitions featuring new commissions and works on loan, and exhibitions devoted to private collections.

E

very journey can change a life. This is the idea behind the partnership between Italo and Empethy, the Italian platform dedicated to the responsible adoption of dogs and cats. For more than three years, Empethy has supported over 1,000 volunteer organisations throughout Italy, helping animals in shelters find a family. The project brings together mobility, innovation and social impact with a simple yet ambitious goal: to give greater visibility to dogs and cats looking for a home and raise awareness among thousands of people about adoption and animal abandonment. During July and December, Italo passengers will find a special postcard dedicated to the project on board its trains. By scanning the QR code, they can access the Italo Virtual Shelter, a digital space featuring hundreds of dogs and cats from shelters located near the main destinations served by Italo. Visitors can learn their stories, share their appeals or begin the adoption process. Because sometimes the most beautiful journey is the one that brings someone home. The partnership between Italo and Empethy shows how every company can make a tangible contribution to animal welfare by putting its expertise and resources to good use. Thanks to the train tickets provided by Italo, volunteers from organisations registered with Empethy can accompany dogs and cats to their new families free of charge, ensuring that the animals travel in comfort and safety, with full respect for their wellbeing. The initiative transforms a mobility service into a practical opportunity to encourage adoption, demonstrating that a company’s contribution can make a genuine difference in an animal’s journey from shelter to home. The partnership between Italo and Empethy also shows how even a simple train journey can become an opportunity to create a positive impact. Every postcard distributed, every QR code scanned, every appeal shared and every volunteer supported represents another step towards a shared goal: helping more dogs and cats leave the shelter and finally find a home.

THE BOOM IN ITALIAN WINE AND THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVES Luca Rigotti of Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca explains: “The creation of large groups has helped exports, but the entire sector has made enormous progress.”

W

ith 314 member organisations—including major consortia and large groups—98,000 members, combined revenues of €4 billion and 7,000 people employed in various capacities, cooperatives now represent a signiicant share of Italy’s wine industry. These are impressive igures, as are those published by Nomisma: between 2015 and 2025, wine’s share of total Italian food and beverage exports rose from 18.7% to 23%. “In percentage terms, it may not seem like much, but in absolute igures it represents a truly signiicant leap,” says Luca Rigotti, national president of the wine sector at Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca. “This can primarily be explained by the formation over the years of large cooperative groups through mergers and consolidation in various parts of Italy. Increasing exports requires expertise and organisation, but also capital and inancing. Nor should we overlook the considerable work involved in organising, promoting and marketing our products. In addition, the quality of our wine has improved signiicantly over the past 15 years, thanks to greater specialisation in our wineries and to the substantial development and reinement of agronomic techniques in the vineyards.” But which has played the greater role: communication or quality? “The two factors go hand in hand. Success in international markets is impossible without both quality and promotion.” Rigotti continues: “There has also been considerable growth in the trade fair sector, with tastings and masterclasses. Sustainability, too, has made enormous progress. Ethical considerations are now fundamental, as consumers are increasingly attentive to environmental responsibility. “And then there is wine tourism: people who visit wineries contribute directly to the sector’s economy. Over the past 20 years, the entire industry has undergone a remarkable transformation.” What, then, does the future hold for wine and cooperatives? Rigootti explains: “A global economic crisis has been under way for the past three years, and smaller cooperatives will need to seek opportunities for consolidation—not only through mergers, but also through commercial agreements and shared projects. “Very small organisations struggle to gain visibility internationally, while excessively large companies may ind it dificult to establish themselves in niche markets. In addition, the geopolitical tensions of recent years and the current inancial climate—including higher borrowing costs and the imposition of tariffs—are creating some hesitation around investment, which is particularly dificult to manage when operating alone. “Nevertheless, I am convinced that, by making full use of all the available tools, the wine industry will continue to play a leading role in the years ahead.”

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR THE FRANÇOIS TOMB Among the greatest masterpieces of ancient art, the tomb’s frescoes have entered the collections of the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome. Their acquisition is accompanied by the exhibition The Return of the Heroes, featuring artefacts on loan from institutions including the Louvre THE NATIONAL ETRUSCAN MUSEUM of Villa Giulia has recently acquired the celebrated François Tomb, one of the greatest masterpieces of Etruscan painting and ancient art. Discovered in 1857 in the Ponte Rotto necropolis at Vulci, the tomb is hewn into the tuff rock and comprises 37 painted panels, together with two stone cippi found in the entrance corridor. Created between 340 and 320 BC, it represents one of the finest surviving examples of Etruscan and ancient painting. Its painted decoration interweaves Greek mythology, Etruscan historical memory and the construction of Vulci’s aristocratic identity. The painted inscriptions allow us to identify names, faces and episodes in which history, legend and representations of power are closely intertwined. The display is accompanied by the exhibition The Return of the Heroes, open until 31 December. Artefacts originally found in the François Tomb but now preserved in major institutions such as the Louvre, the British Museum and others are temporarily reunited with the tomb.

undreds of events will take place from 24 to 27 September across some of Turin’s most representative streets, squares and historic buildings. The occasion is the 40th anniversary of Slow Food Italy, celebrated with a special edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto. Organised by the association whose symbol is the snail, together with the City of Turin and the Piedmont Region, the event is dedicated to food policies and to promoting products that are good, clean and fair. The theme of the 2026 edition is the protection of biodiversity throughout the world: the biodiversity of food, knowledge and cultures. The four-day programme will be

packed with conferences, Taste Workshops and dining events featuring chefs and producers, as well as sensory games and activities in schools, school gardens and community gardens. There will also be the unmissable large Market, bringing together dozens of producers from Italy and around the world. This journey of discovery begins in Piazza Castello, the heart of the city, in the Slow Food Italy spaces and the large exhibition area devoted to the Ark of Taste. Since 1986, the project has catalogued fruit, vegetables, animal breeds, cheeses, breads, desserts and cured meats that are at risk of disappearing. Today, it includes 1,204 products from 20 Italian regions.

In the Slow Food International space, the Connected Lands area will explore food as a form of relationship: seeds, techniques and culinary cultures are shaped by migration, exchange and interaction between communities. Visitors will also be able to sample dishes from around the world and discover Slow Food Presidia products. The Taste Workshops will enjoy a prestigious setting in the grand rooms of the State Archives of Turin, featuring dishes prepared by chefs from the Slow Food Alliance. Designed by Filippo Juvarra and built between 1731 and 1733, the building is the only one in Europe speciically designed to house an archive. It has been included by UNESCO among the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, a World Heritage Site since 1997.

BARI, THE MAGIC OF THE THEATRE Exploring the historic stages of the Apulian capital. Petruzzelli, Piccinni, Teatro Margherita and the Kursaal: a living heritage returned to the city through meticulous restoration work

B

ari’s relationship with the theatre is both deep-rooted and centuries old. As early as the mid-eighteenth century, the Apulian capital had its own theatre in the old town. It was in the mid-nineteenth century, however, following the example of other major Italian cities, that the municipal authorities decided to build a large public theatre. Inaugurated in 1854, it was named after Bari-born composer Niccolò Piccinni. Designed by architect Antonio Niccolini and built on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, in the Murat district, it is a classic Italian-style theatre, with a neoclassical façade and a horseshoe-shaped audi-

torium seating 775 people across four tiers of boxes and a gallery. Its gilded stucco, papier-mâché and lacquered decorations were inspired by those of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, from where painters, decorators and craftsmen were brought in. The curtain rose for the irst time to the music of Gaetano Donizetti’s Poliuto. “That evening, the theatre cast such a gentle glow over the auditorium, packed with lavishly dressed spectators, that it seemed like an enchanted place, a fairy-tale palace,” wrote contemporary chronicler Giulio Petroni. Until 1903, when the Petruzzelli was built, the Piccinni was Bari’s leading theatre and the only one with a permanent orchestra. Today, following a lengthy restoration, it still hosts the city’s main drama season. It was precisely the Piccinni’s limited seating capacity, combined with growing interest in opera, that led the municipal authorities to commission a new and larger theatre. It was built by brothers Onofrio and Antonio Petruzzelli, shipowners of Trieste origin, together with Bari engineer Angelo Messeni. Its capacity was considered extraordinary from the outset: 2,192 seats, now reduced to 1,482 for safety reasons. Equally remarkable was the variety of its programme, ranging from opera to ballet, as well as the presence of

internationally renowned performers and companies. Then came the devastating ire that destroyed the entire theatre on the night of 27 October 1991. It was not returned to the city until 2009, when it reopened after an exact and painstaking reconstruction restored it to its original appearance. Guided tours: fondazionepetruzzelli.it. In recent years, the Kursaal Santalucia has also undergone meticulous restoration. This Art Nouveau jewel overlooking the seafront was designed by Orazio Santalucia in 1922. A venue for festivals, cultural programmes, theatrical performances and concerts, as well as society evenings and ceremonies, it features a 400-seat auditorium whose coniguration can be rapidly altered thanks to new technology. On the upper loor, the Sala Giuseppina is a triumph of marble and loral frescoes, while the roof garden has been transformed by artist Alfredo Pirri into the Sala Cielo, an exhibition space. It is currently hosting Pascali Memoria. Appunti per immagini, on view until 25 October, featuring a selection of documents, notes, correspondence and photographs produced by Apulian artist Pino Pascali in 1965 between Naples, Ischia and Capri. The Teatro Margherita, one of Bari’s most iconic buildings, also hosts exhibitions and events. Built on stilts in the old harbour between 1912 and 1914, it was originally conceived as an entertainment venue and is one of the very few European examples of a theatre constructed over water. After years of neglect and intermittent restoration work, it reopened in December 2018 as an exhibition space for contemporary art. The project reinforced its foundations in the sea, restored the dome and reorganised the interiors without altering the building’s original appearance.

ANCIENT BEAUTIES The Capitolium archaeological area, a corner of ancient Rome in the heart of Brescia. On the facing page, the Castle.

DISDAINFUL BRESCIA A walk through the streets of my city, from Piazza della Loggia—with its history and the wound of the recent past—to the Dog’s Tomb Text by Monica Gasparini

“B

rescia, disdainful of every base thought, armed more with valour than with iron.” Just a few lines—mistakenly attributed to Carducci—that my primary-school teacher, Sister Ofelia, had me copy into my history notebook beneath an image of the Winged Victory. That Nike dating from the third century BC, the symbol of ancient Brixia, revealed the beauty of the city to me and gave me the pride of feeling that it was mine. Brescia is like its people: more cultured than it cares to show and more beautiful than you would expect. It is a city whose roots stretch deep into the valleys and mountains, where even the Romans mined iron, before settling among gentle hills covered with vineyards and olive groves and fading into the blue of the lakes. My walk through the streets of Brescia—where the present mingles with memories, rediscovered views with nostalgia for my youth—begins in Piazza della Loggia, a place of history and of a still-recent wound. There is the sixteenth-century palace that houses the Town Hall and, on the opposite side, beneath the Macc de le Ure—the “Madmen of the Hours”, the statues standing above the clock tower—the marble column chipped by the Fascist bomb that killed eight people on 28 May 1974. Piazza della Loggia is the heart of the city, a place of civic engagement and public demonstrations, and now also of concerts. Brescia’s different souls converge and merge here: the working-class spirit of the Carmine district and Via San Faustino, and the aristocratic character of Via Cattaneo and Via dei Musei. There are narrow lanes and ancient noble courtyards, taverns and hidden gardens. In the cafés, people speak dialect and drink pirlo, a red aperitif made with strictly still white wine; on Saturdays they eat bertagnì, the fried cod of the city’s humble culinary tradition. I stop at the church of Brescia’s patron saints, Faustino and Giovita, and—this is not really true, but still—I put my head into the marble niche beside the altar of Saint Honorius. According to legend and popular devotion, the saint’s intercession can cure migraines. The path of memory takes me to Piazza Duomo. For decades, its oficial name has actually been Piazza Paolo VI, after the Brescia-born pope from Concesio, and there are no fewer than two cathedrals here: the New Cathedral, with its Baroque style and white Botticino-marble façade, and the Rotonda, the old medieval cathedral, circular in structure, whose sunken entrance bears witness to the layering of the centuries. Crossing the courtyard of the Broletto—the city’s oldest public building, overlooked by the civic tower—it is only a short walk to the Capitolium archaeological area, to the ancient Brixia that enchants not

THE OLD PIAZZA DUOMO Piazza Paolo VI, known to the people of Brescia as Piazza Duomo, is named after the pope who was born in Concesio, a few kilometres from Brescia.

only visitors. Here it is: this unexpected corner of ancient Rome, with its ruins from the Imperial age, the museum housing the Winged Victory, and the amphitheatre connected to the monumental complex of Santa Giulia, a UNESCO-listed Lombard site. Centuries of history and beauty intertwine and unfold in astonishing continuity. The monastery once sheltered Ermengarde, the repudiated wife of Charlemagne. Restored through expert and far-sighted work, Santa Giulia is now a museum, but also a meeting place, a setting for sunset aperitifs among the ruins and for open-air cinema beneath the Cidneo Hill, which rises above the city and is crowned by the Castle. The Castle… For the people of Brescia, it is the traditional Sunday walk, climbing the slope from Piazzetta Tito Speri. It means ice cream and cool air, the great trees in the gravel square beside the old locomotive. Walking back down the hillside, you come across another treasure: Europe’s largest urban vineyard, an essential stop on the way to Piazza Arnaldo, where the rebellious monk stretches out his arms over the city. Yet there is another monument that the people of Brescia love, perhaps more than any other: the Dog’s Tomb. High on the Ronchi hills, the white marble mausoleum stands out against the landscape. A wealthy merchant and philanthropist had it built as his own tomb; however, because burials outside cemeteries were prohibited, it remained empty. Legend has it that, out of spite, the man who commissioned it decided to place a dog there instead. I walk through Brescia and—perhaps it is nostalgia—I see it as both different and unchanged, with the University housed in Piazza del Mercato and metro stations bearing the names of places close to my heart: San Faustino, Piazza Vittoria. The city has changed its face, but not its essence. It is my Brescia, the “disdainful” Lioness: “Brescia the strong, Brescia the iron.” And these, indeed, are lines by Giosuè Carducci.

Surrounded by the greenery of the Telesina Valley, it expresses the group’s philosophy through the genuineness of the setting, respect for its roots and a profound connection with the local area.” The hotel is distinguished by its “warm and spontaneous” hospitality. Thanks to “a team that recognises every guest and remembers even their smallest preferences and wishes”, it now enjoys a loyal clientele of repeat guests, including many international visitors. “It is an offering designed for those seeking human warmth, genuine relaxation and sincere personal attention,” says Di Mauro. This is complemented by “the extraordinary effectiveness of Telese’s historic sulphurous waters and their integration with the surrounding natural park. We offer targeted treatments and wellness programmes focused on health and the deep regeneration of both body and mind.” In recent years, “the integrated wellness offering and the area’s food-and-wine experiences have also been enhanced and optimised. Looking ahead, we aim to develop increasingly personalised programmes, strengthening an experience that is both authentic and restorative.” This philosophy extends to the dining table, where gastronomy plays a complementary role in the overall wellness experience through “a zero-kilometre cuisine rooted in local traditions and ingredients, demonstrating that healthy, high-quality food can go hand in hand with heritage.” What truly sets the hotel apart are its sulphurous waters, which emerge naturally at a cool temperature of 21°C. “In the indoor pool at the Etherea Thermal Spa, the water is heated to ensure maximum comfort, allowing guests to enjoy its thermal beneits throughout the hotel’s opening season, from April to October.” Choosing the Grand Hotel Telese therefore means “feeling at home once again in a place devoted to authentic wellbeing, where the power of nature and the care of our staff transform every stay into an opportunity to recharge with pure energy” and enjoy moments of complete relaxation.

It was the irst hotel in Rome to obtain Green Globe Membership, the world’s leading certiication for the sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses.” Guests can also contribute to this virtuous process by joining the Green Program, which promotes simple and responsible practices: “Small gestures can make a difference, such as choosing to have bed linen and towels changed only when necessary, using water carefully and reducing energy waste by removing the electronic key when leaving the room.” These simple choices transform a hotel stay into a more conscious experience while strengthening the value of the property’s environmental programme. The entire staff plays a central role and is “committed every day to preventing the waste of resources through responsible operating procedures.” This vision is relected in every project and also extends to the hotel’s dining experience through 47 Hortus, a plot of land in the Marturanum Regional Park in the province of Viterbo. It produces the extra virgin olive oil served exclusively at the hotel’s restaurant.

Via Alessandria 104, Roma Tel. 389 9476612 osareroma.it FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BOLD AT THE TABLE Some restaurants follow a clearly deined path, while others prefer to explore less-travelled territory. Osare undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. Its name—Italian for “to dare”—immediately declares its intentions: to bring sea and land, technique and instinct into dialogue, without ever losing sight of balance. The result is contemporary cuisine that feels youthful in its approach yet surprisingly mature in its execution. The experience begins with a welcome that immediately conveys the restaurant’s philosophy: a trio of breads—Roman-style pizza, white bread and three-grain bread—served with whipped trufle butter. From there, the menu moves effortlessly between raw seafood dishes, such as citrus-marinated meagre and herb-dressed amberjack, and meat-based offerings including picanha and Macatiello. The restaurant’s signature dish is rabbit stuffed with langoustine, slow-cooked and served with its own jus and a rich butter-andshallot purée: an unusual pairing, but an entirely successful one. Equally convincing is the monkish with celeriac, mushrooms, coffee and saffron jus, lifted by the acidity of kombucha in a precisely calibrated interplay of contrasts. Another memorable dish is the Girasole: strictly house-made fresh pasta illed with tuna genovese, delivering a rich, enveloping depth of lavour. The meal ends on a high note with an indulgent yet perfectly balanced lavender ice cream. At Osare, the name is not a promise: it is a method.

Main courses include Chicken and Potatoes and roasted octopus. Particular attention is also paid to the ingredients, sourced from selected Roman artisans and specialist food shops. Contrada Barbassano snc, Paternopoli (AV) fiorentinovini.it

AUTHENTIC VOLCANIC SOUL Zirpoli is a splendid expression of the native Coda di Volpe grape variety. It comes from organic vineyards in Paternopoli, planted on high-altitude volcanic soils. Straw yellow in colour, it offers aromas of pear, chamomile and flint. It has all the hallmarks of a contemporary white wine: fresh, crisp and full of character, with thirst-quenching acidity. Excellent with fried anchovies or spaghetti dressed with colatura di alici, for a striking regional pairing.

DO YOU KNOW?

VOLCANIC SOIL IS A HALLMARK OF QUALITY The presence of active and extinct volcanoes throughout Italy provides vineyards with soils rich in basalt, tuff and ash, producing outstanding results in the glass: one of the secrets behind the quality of Italian wine.

THE STORY OF PROSECCO IN AN AMPHITHEATRE OF VINEYARDS An undisputed symbol of Italian winemaking, Santa Margherita has showcased the Valdobbiadene terroir since the 1950s, elevating the Glera grape to a global byword for elegance and enjoyment. This Prosecco Superiore DOCG Brut is born in a unique natural amphitheatre, amid steep, meticulously tended rows of vines linking the historic hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The composition of the pre-Alpine soils, rich in clay and limestone, together with the constant temperature variations, gives the grapes an exceptionally refined aromatic profile and creates a landscape of almost surreal beauty. The wine ferments in pressurised tanks according to the Martinotti method and rests on its lees to preserve the vibrant, pristine freshness of the fruit. In the glass, it shines a pale straw yellow, enhanced by a fine, abundant and remarkably persistent perlage. The palate is rounded yet dry, with refreshing acidity that cleanses the palate and delivers exceptional freshness. Perfect as a sophisticated aperitif, it is equally memorable paired with seafood risotto or delicate white-fish carpaccio.

A trend that transformed the student wardrobe is set to take centre stage again this autumn. Numerous collections from a wide range of brands are offering modern interpretations of one of the most influential aesthetic codes in contemporary fashion: Ivy League style is back

BORN AT BRITISH UNIVERSITIES and later reinterpreted on the campuses of America’s East Coast, collegiate style—a symbol of belonging and identity—turned the student wardrobe into one of the most influential aesthetic codes in modern fashion. Blazers with gold buttons, Oxford shirts, rugby tops, collegiate knitwear and varsity jackets are once again in the spotlight, updated with softer proportions and contemporary fabrics. From Ralph Lauren to Tommy Hilfiger, many brands are rediscovering this distinctive aesthetic. Among the most interesting interpretations, GANT celebrates its historic connection with Yale University, where the brand first made its name with its iconic button-down shirts. A dedicated capsule collection reworks classic university wardrobe staples through a contemporary lens. Brooks Brothers, meanwhile, pays tribute to rowing tradition with a capsule collection dedicated to Canottieri Milano. The collection reinterprets the codes of American rowing clubs, recalling the brand’s historic ties to Ivy League culture and to one of the sports most closely associated with American university life.

COYOTE VS. ACME

COYOTE VS. ACME WILE E. COYOTE IS ONE OF US He is one of the most iconic characters in the history of television and Warner Bros. The adventures of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner have entertained children and adults alike since 1949, but they are far more than simple cartoons: they represent an entire world, two different approaches to life. The coyote’s relentless determination to catch Geococcyx californianus— better known as the roadrunner—and his endless failures embody our constant drive to reach a horizon that keeps moving farther away, despite every attempt to catch up with it. Or perhaps they are simply very funny. Wile E. Coyote adds a new chapter to his adventures from 2 September in Coyote vs. Acme, and this time his opponent is the Acme Corporation itself—the supplier of all the weapons and products Wile E. has used in his attempts to catch the Road Runner. Wile E. hires Kevin Avery, a broke human lawyer whose face usually appears on billboards, to represent him in his lawsuit against the company. Good luck, Wile E.—you’re going to need it.

DAVID BOWIE

KASABIAN

THE SHEL TALMY RECORDINGS, UNA RACCOLTA DAVVERO INEDITA

Warner

THE SHEL TALMY RECORDINGS, A TRULY UNRELEASED COLLECTION A record for collectors. A genuine anthology featuring 10 previously unreleased gems for true connoisseurs and fans of the artist who would later become known to the world as the Thin White Duke. Indeed, The Shel Talmy Recordings is the most comprehensive collection of songs recorded in 1965 by a very young David Bowie—then still known as Davie Jones—with legendary 1960s producer Shel Talmy, renowned for his groundbreaking hits with The Who and The Kinks. The album also includes 10 tracks previously unavailable on CD and digital formats, and six on the vinyl edition, featuring contributions from legendary Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who was working as a session musician at the time, and Nicky Hopkins, the celebrated pianist who played with The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who and Jeff Beck. The collection also features the singles You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving and Baby Loves That Way, songs Bowie was particularly fond of and chose to re-record many years later for the album Toy, released in 2021.

ACT III

ACT III The Leicester rock band return with their ninth studio album, an intense record that explores fresh musical territory and was introduced by the singles Superpowers, Hippie Sunshine and Great Pretender. Act III features 10 tracks blending pop-driven melodies with guitars steeped in psychedelic inluences, alongside three interludes that shape the album’s low and atmosphere. Built around infectious hooks and big, immediate choruses, the record expands the band’s sonic palette without losing the energy that has long deined their sound.
