TANTE IDEE PER VIAGGIARE ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA NOSTRA ITALIA

IL BELLO DELL’ITALIA è che siamo un Paese in grado di offrire tantissimo. Mari e coste stupende, montagne e vette da esplorare, città d’arte da visitare, piccoli borghi dove perdersi riscoprendo realtà spesso scomparse, musei, monumenti e chiese, ma anche campagne perfette per un relax dallo stile più bucolico. E poi il cibo con i prodotti della nostra terra e mare. Legati a tradizioni e spesso così diversi anche a pochi chilometri di distanza. Ma anche le persone, la gente dei luoghi che spesso, soprattutto fuori dalle grandi città, conservano quell’accoglienza e disponibilità che in alcuni casi abbiamo perso. Senza dimenticare i 59 siti riconosciuti “patrimonio dell’umanità” dall’UNESCO. Sono questi, più tanti altri, che fanno del nostro Paese una Bella Italia che dobbiamo difendere e conservare perché è il nostro vero patrimonio che in molti ci invidiano. Anche questo mese Italo magazine vi porta alla scoperta di alcuni di questi patrimoni tutti italiani. Sappiamo che la scelta per le prossime vacanze, o ferie, si divide principalmente in due, mare o montagna, e questo numero vi portiamo in alta quota alla scoperta dei luoghi del FAI. Località in diverse parti dell’Italia dove trascorrere piacevoli giornate passeggiando alla scoperta della natura e non solo. Le mete di questo mese hanno invece entrambe un comune denominatore, l’acqua. Vi portiamo a scoprire le rive più belle del Lago di Garda visitandolo da un battello, partendo da Desenzano. Mentre a Trani viviamo la settimana Medioevale con eventi e feste attorno alla sua cattedrale affacciata su una delle zone più belle dell’Adriatico. Buona lettura e buon viaggio!

MARATEA

Sulla vetta del Monte San Biagio, il Cristo Redentore di Maratea si staglia maestoso tra cielo e mare. Realizzata da Bruno Innocenti tra il 1963 e il 1965, la statua, alta oltre 21 metri, accoglie visitatori e pellegrini con le braccia aperte verso l’infinito. Simbolo di fede, arte e identità, domina la costa lucana come un guardiano silenzioso della Perla del Tirreno.

On the summit of Monte San Biagio, Maratea’s Christ the Redeemer rises majestically between sky and sea. Created by Bruno Innocenti between 1963 and 1965, the statue, more than 21 metres tall, welcomes visitors and pilgrims with its arms open towards ininity. A symbol of faith, art and identity, it dominates the Lucanian coast like a silent guardian of the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

ici estate e pensi subito al mare, alla spiaggia, agli ombrelloni e alla brezza che accarezza e rinfresca i litorali mentre le città si trasformano in fornaci e i bollini rossi delle ondate di calore si sprecano. È il riscaldamento globale, bellezza! Ma da qualche anno il mare non è più il solo protagonista. La montagna si è presa una bella fetta di torta, tanto che ora si parla di overtourism anche sulle nostre amate vette. Un fenomeno che mette a dura prova l’ambiente e le comunità locali. E allora per non rischiare di ritrovarsi nel caos, nella calca, insomma in tutto quello che ruota attorno al concetto di sovraffollamento che già ci tiene compagnia per buona parte dell’anno, la soluzione va ricercata nelle destinazioni meno battute, in luoghi poco conosciuti e, piccoli tesori da scoprire come i beni montani del Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano (FAI). Dalle Alpi alla Sila, sono diversi i luoghi custoditi dal Fondo, quasi tutti visitabili anche durante l’estate e quindi perfetti se si trascorre una vacanza in questi territori. Assolutamente da scoprire è quello che si estende per 200 ettari tra Alpe Pedroria e Madrera, nel cuore delle Orobie Valtellinesi. Tra pascoli, boschi incontaminati e terreni franosi, qui l’ambiente naturale conserva ancora un carattere autentico e selvaggio. La presenza di baite e malghe, costruite con tipiche murature in pietra a secco, racconta una tradizione secolare, legata all’attività pastorizia che in questi luoghi ha ritrovato nuova vitalità. L’area è attraversata da numerosi sentieri percorribili a piedi, che permettono di immergersi in una grande varietà di habitat naturali. Si scende un po’ di quota per arrivare alle Prealpi Orobiche dove è conservata una delle testimonianze più preziose della cultura di questo territorio: un mulino ancora funzionante risalente al XVII secolo. A Bàresi, frazione di Roncobello, nel cuore della Val Brembana, il Mulino “Maurizio Gervasoni” è stato per secoli un punto di riferimento per la sussistenza della valle. Sopra l’in-

gresso del mulino è ancora visibile un affresco raffigurante una Madonna con Bambino, mentre sulla destra campeggia l’immagine di un albero di noce, pianta importantissima per la vita contadina. Nell’area circostante si ritrovano invece tracce di insediamenti abitativi risalenti all’età del bronzo. Restiamo in Lombardia dove, con le Alpi Retiche sullo sfondo e il panorama della Valtellina sottostante, si può visitare Castel Grumello, una rocca costruita nel XIII secolo in cima a uno strapiombo. È un raro esempio di fortezza “gemella”, con due edifici distinti ma complementari, racchiusi da mura. Nel XVI secolo fu distrutta, come altre fortezze della Valtellina. Oggi, però, quelle rovine - restaurate nel 2001 - hanno un fascino particolare amplificato da una posizione invidiabile. Tra i castelli più antichi e suggestivi del Trentino c’è senza dubbio quello di Avio, costruito sulla sommità di uno sperone del Monte Vignola, che domina la Val Lagarina solcata dall’Adige. Il complesso, maestoso, è visibile anche a distanza grazie alle mura merlate e ai torrioni che oggi circondano viti e cipressi. E gli interni regalano un altro spettacolo agli occhi dei visitatori, come

gli affreschi della metà del Trecento che decorano la Camera dell’Amore e del Mastio. Avio è un luogo interessante anche per i più piccoli che, attraverso il coinvolgimento di percorsi-gioco, possono divertirsi a conoscere le storie e i personaggi che hanno animato questo posto nei secoli. Se si è in zona, ci si può concedere una piccola fuga in città per visitare l’Aula del Simonino, all’interno di Palazzo Bortolazzi Larcher Fogazzaro, nel centro storico di Trento. “Simonino” era Simone Lomferdorm, un bambino di poco più di due anni, trovato morto il 24 marzo del 1475 nel fossato di una casa lungo l’Adige di proprietà di un ebreo. Le autorità cittadine dell’epoca accusarono gli ebrei di aver ucciso il bambino per ricavarne il sangue da usare nel rito della Pasqua. Il piccolo Simone divenne così un martire cristiano e poi ufficialmente un beato, destinatario di un culto vero e proprio. La comunità ebraica trentina fu ingiustamente processata e condannata, e infine espulsa dalla città. Solo nel 1965 una revisione scientifica del processo ha ribaltato quasi 500 anni dopo la sentenza iniziale, e con un decreto papale il culto del Simonino venne soppresso. Il luogo ha comunque mantenuto lo status di grande valore culturale, per la sua storia, ma anche per l’architettura e la decorazione. Gli ebrei sono ritornati a Trento ufficialmente nel 1992. E la storia si rintraccia anche a Monte Fontana Secca: 150 ettari tra boschi e pascoli, affacciato sulla valle del Piave e

custode di tragiche memorie legate alla Prima Guerra Mondiale. Siamo nel territorio di Quero Vas, in provincia di Belluno, in un’area di alto valore naturalistico. La malga Fontana Secca è un tipico esempio di alpeggio legato alla tradizione della transumanza con la casa del malgaro, la casera e le stalle. Il Monte Fontana Secca fu teatro di uno scontro sanguinoso tra il 21 e il 22 novembre 1917: trincee, gallerie e cippi commemorativi lungo i sentieri testimoniano ancora oggi la battaglia e i suoi caduti, mentre l’Alta Via degli Eroi collega il sito al Sacrario di Cima Grappa, altro luogo simbolico della Grande Guerra. Anche le vette del Sud Italia possono custodire autentici tesori, come il bosco ultracentenario dei “giganti della Sila” con oltre 60 esemplari di pini larici e aceri montani piantati nel Seicento: alberi alti fino a 45 metri, testimoni preziosi delle antiche selve silane. Passeggiare qui è come immergersi totalmente nella storia e nella natura, assaporando la montagna e un tempo a noi lontani. E invece così vicini.

Discovering FAI’s mountain properties: among alpine dairies, castles and forests of giant trees, history, nature and traditions shine once again at high altitude

Say summer and you immediately think of the sea, the beach, sun umbrellas and the breeze that caresses and cools the coastlines while cities turn into furnaces and heatwave red alerts abound. It’s global warming, baby! But in recent years the sea has no longer been the sole protagonist. The mountains have claimed a generous slice of the pie, so much so that overtourism is now being discussed even on our beloved peaks. This phenomenon puts the environment and local communities under severe pressure. So, to avoid the chaos, the crowds—in short, everything that re-

volves around the concept of overcrowding, which already keeps us company for much of the year—the solution is to look to less-travelled destinations, little-known places and smalltreasureswaitingtobediscovered,suchasthemountain properties of the Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano (FAI). From theAlps to the Sila, the Foundation preserves a number of sites, almost all of which can also be visited during the summer, making them perfect for anyone spending a holiday in these areas. One absolute must-see is the area that extends over 200 hectares between Alpe Pedroria and Alpe Madrera, in the heart of the Orobie Valtellinesi. Among pastures, unspoilt woods and landslide-prone slopes, the natural environment here still retains an authentic, wild character. The presence of huts and alpine dairies, built with typical dry-stone masonry, tells the story of a centuries-old tradition linked to pastoral activity, which has found new vitality in these places. The areaiscrossedbynumerouswalkingtrails, allowingvisitorstoimmersethemselvesin a great variety of natural habitats. Descending a little in altitude brings us to the Orobie Prealps, home to one of the most precious testimonies to the culture of this territory: a still-functioning mill dating back to the 17th century. It is a rare example of a “twin” fortress, with two distinct yet complementary buildings enclosedbywalls.Inthe16thcenturyitwasdestroyed, like other fortresses in the Valtellina. Today, however, those ruins—restored in 2001—have a special charm, amplified by their enviable position. rina, carved by the RiverAdige. The majestic complex can be seen even from a distance, thanks to its crenellated walls and towers, which today surround vines and cypresses. Its interiors offer visitors another spectacle, such as the mid-14th-century frescoes that decorate the Chamber of Love and the Keep. Avio is also an interesting place for children, who, through engaging game-based trails, can have fun discovering the stories and characters that have animated this site over the centuries. If you are in the area, you can treat yourself to a short city escape to visit theAula del Simonino, inside Palazzo Bortolazzi Larcher Fogazzaro, in the historic centre of Trento. “Simonino” was Simone Lomferdorm, a child just over two years old who was found dead on 24 March 1475 in the moat of a house along the Adige owned by a Jewish man. The city authorities of the time accused the Jews of killing the child in order to obtain his blood for use in the Passover ritual. Little Simone thus became a Christian martyr and later officially a blessed figure, the object of a full-fledged cult. The Jewish community of Trento was unjustly tried and convicted, and eventually expelled from the city. Only in 1965 did a scientific review of the trial overturn the original verdict, almost 500 years later, and, with a papal decree, the cult of Simonino was suppressed. The site has nevertheless retained its status as a place of great cultural value, both for its history and for its architecture and decoration. Jews officially returned to Trento in 1992.

History can also be traced at Monte Fontana Secca: 150 hectares of woods and pastures overlooking the Piave valley and preserving tragic memories linked to the First World War. the stables. Monte Fontana Secca was the scene of a bloody clash between 21 and 22 November 1917: trenches, tunnels and commemorative stones along the paths still bear witness today to the battle and its fallen, while the Alta Via degli Eroi connects the site to the Cima Grappa Military Shrine, another symbolic place of the Great War.

The peaks of Southern Italy, too, can preserve authentic treasures, such as the centuries-old forest of the “Giants of the Sila”, with more than 60 specimens of Corsican pines and sycamore maples planted in the 17th century: trees up to 45 metres tall, precious witnesses to the ancient Sila forests. Walking here is like immersing yourself completely in history and nature, savouring the mountains and a time far removed from us. And yet so close.

NEZIA e della Laguna hanno annunciato il prestigioso riconoscimento dedicato alla valorizzazione delle eccellenze nel campo dell’architettura ricevuto dal progetto di riapertura del Cortile dell’Agrippa, storico ingresso del Museo archeologico nazionale di Venezia, ovvero il Premio Nazionale Templum. Il premio, dunque, colloca il progetto nell’ambito degli interventi virtuosi e di altissimo profilo, capace di coniugare il rigore del restauro filologico con l’innovazione della museografia contemporanea, confermando la centralità del Museo nel panorama culturale italiano e restituendo alla cittadinanza, e al pubblico internazionale, uno spazio monumentale di straordinario valore storico. In particolare, l’intervento ha riguardato il restauro dell’ingresso storico del Museo, la riorganizzazione delle sculture distribuite nel cortile progettato e realizzato da Vincenzo Scamozzi e il riallestimento dello spazio dedicato all’accoglienza e alla biglietteria.

The National Archaeological Museums of Venice and the Lagoon have announced the prestigious recognition dedicated to promoting excellence in the field of architecture, awarded to the project for the reopening of the Courtyard of Agrippa, the historic entrance to the National Archaeological Museum of Venice: the National Templum Award. The award therefore places the project among virtuous, high-profile initiatives, capable of combining the rigour of philological restoration with the innovation of contemporary museography. It confirms the Museum’s central role in the Italian cultural landscape and restores to citizens and the international public a monumental space of extraordinary historical value. In particular, the work involved the restoration of the Museum’s historic entrance, the reorganisation of the sculptures displayed throughout the courtyard designed and built by Vincenzo Scamozzi, and the redesign of the reception and ticketing area.

Grandi novità agli Uffizi: le sale della Galleria che ospitano i maggiori capolavori di Sandro Botticelli sono state rinnovate. Un nuovo e importante step nel percorso tracciato dal direttore Simone Verdi che intende «proseguire con determinazione nel riallestimento complessivo delle Gallerie: l’obiettivo è continuare a essere, oggi più che mai, il museo più bello del mondo». La novità più rilevante dell’allestimento permanente è che ora i più grandi capolavori del maestro del Rinascimento sono esposti uno di fronte all’altro. Così la Venere e la Primavera si guardano negli occhi, in un dialogo diretto e inedito. In più, le due icone degli Uffizi sono ora collocate in teche ermetiche che tutelano la conservazione delle opere nelle migliori condizioni possibili di sicurezza, una svolta che ha permesso di eliminare le vetrate protettive esterne che ne alteravano la percezione diretta di monumentali quadri appesi alle pareti.

Major changes at the Ufizi: the Gallery rooms housing Sandro Botticelli’s greatest masterpieces have been renovated. This is a new and important step in the path set out by director Simone Verdi, who intends “to continue with determination the overall reinstallation of the Galleries: the goal is to remain, today more than ever, the most beautiful museum in the world.” The most signiicant new feature of the permanent display is that the Renaissance master’s greatest masterpieces are now exhibited facing one another. Venus and Primavera now look each other in the eye, in a direct and unprecedented dialogue. In addition, the two Ufizi icons are now housed in airtight display cases that protect the conservation of the works under the best possible safety conditions. This change has made it possible to remove the external protective glass panels, which altered the direct perception of the monumental paintings hanging on the walls.

This, in summary, is the picture that emerged from the Coldiretti/Ixè survey, released to coincide with the irst summer departures, conirming the growth of Italian tourism. The average holiday will last around ten days, and the seaside remains the favourite destination, ahead of the mountains, the countryside and art cities. Naturally, summer 2026 will be inluenced by the delicate international situation and, consequently, by rising costs. This is why farm stays are coming back into fashion — Italy boasts a network of more than 26,000 such facilities — with growing demand for wine tourism, beer tourism and olive-oil tourism.

In 2026, the number of local indicators increased from 15 to 20 for each generational group.Among the main new features are proximity services reachable on foot within 15 minutes, and the presence of family or social networks that people can rely on in times of need. NUOVE SIMULAZIONI ALLA LPSC 2026

Gli anelli di Saturno potrebbero essere i resti di Chrysalis: un’antica luna ghiacciata distrutta dalle forze di marea del pianeta. Nuove simulazioni presentate alla Lpsc 2026 mostrano che Saturno avrebbe strappato parte del mantello di ghiaccio del satellite, formando un anello. L’ipotesi spiega l’origine degli anelli, che però potrebbero scomparire entro 100-300 milioni di anni.

SATURN AND THE ORIGIN OF ITS RINGS: NEW SIMULATIONS AT LPSC 2026

Saturn’s rings may be the remains of Chrysalis, an ancient icy moon destroyed by the planet’s tidal forces. New simulations presented at LPSC 2026 show that Saturn may have torn away part of the satellite’s icy mantle, forming a ring.The hypothesis explains the origin of the rings, which, however, could disappear within 100–300 million years.

It is true: honeybees really can count.Anew study by the University of Trento and Monash University conirms that these insects process numerical information and do not simply recognise visual patterns. They even understand the concept of zero: a “nonnumber” that is essential to mathematics. By analysing the experiments from the bees’perceptual point of view, the researchers strengthened the evidence of their mathematical abilities, demonstrating the importance of studying animal intelligence according to the biology of each species.

NEL PICCOLO COMUNE DI VICOFORTE (Cuneo), all’interno del santuario Regina Montis Regalis dedicato alla Natività di Maria, nella diocesi di Mondovì, è possibile ammirare – anche a distanza molto ravvicinata – un’opera unica nel suo genere, la celebre cupola ellittica in muratura più grande del mondo, con un campo pittorico, a tema unico, di oltre 6000 metri quadrati. Inoltre, in assoluto e se si considerano anche le cupole circolari, è la quinta cupola più grande al mondo, dopo San Pietro, Pantheon, Duomo di Firenze e Gol Gumbaz. Nel Santuario, conosciuto anche per la sacra immagine della “Madonna del pilone di Vico”, è possibile vivere un’esperienza fortemente suggestiva. Grazie al progetto Magnificat si ha la possibilità di sentirsi parte di quest’opera meravigliosa, prenotando una visita guidata unica nel suo genere. Si sale fino a 60 metri di altezza, 266 gradini, fin sopra alla lanterna (cupolino) e ci si abbandona all’inimitabile visuale a strapiombo sull’ambiente ovale, in un percorso che si dipana tra dentro e fuori la cupola, guidati dalla descrizione di appassionate volontarie.

IN THE SMALL TOWN OF VICOFORTE, in the province of Cuneo, inside the Regina Montis Regalis Sanctuary dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, in the Diocese of Mondovì, visitors can admire — even from very close range — a truly unique work: the famous largest masonry elliptical dome in the world, with a single-theme painted surface of more than 6,000 square metres. Moreover, if circular domes are also taken into account, it is the fifth-largest dome in the world overall, after St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, Florence Cathedral and Gol Gumbaz.

At the Sanctuary, also known for the sacred image of the “Madonna del Pilone di Vico”, visitors can enjoy a deeply evocative experience. Thanks to the Magnificat project, they can feel part of this marvellous work by booking a one-of-a-kind guided tour. The route climbs to a height of 60 metres, up 266 steps, above the lantern — the small dome — offering an incomparable vertiginous view over the oval interior, along a path that winds both inside and outside the dome, accompanied by the explanations of passionate volunteer guides.

Un caleidoscopio di colori, dal blu allo smeraldo, passando per tutte le sfumature dell’azzurro e del verde. Sono così le acque del lago di Garda, il bacino lacustre più grande d’Italia. Un mare d’acqua dolce tutto da navigare.

In treno si arriva a Desenzano o a Peschiera e da lì ci si imbarca su uno dei tanti mezzi pubblici che collegano, con diverse corse al giorno, le varie località costiere, scegliendo tra veloci aliscafi e catamarani o una crociera slow in motonave. I più “navigati” possono optare per una barca a vela o a motore, da noleggiare con o senza skipper. Desenzano del Garda è la scelta migliore per esplorare la riva lombarda, da Sirmione a Manerba. Ma prima di imbarcarsi vale la pena di

visitare la cittadina, che ha diversi punti di interesse: dal Duomo, che custodisce un’Ultima Cena dipinta da Gian Battista Tiepolo (1738), alla Villa Romana (IV secolo), con splendidi pavimenti a mosaico. Piazza Malvezzi, cuore del centro storico, ha eleganti palazzi cinquecenteschi, così come la vecchia darsena, su cui si affacciano bar e ristoranti che d’estate riempiono di tavolini le banchine (visitdesenzano.it).

Primo, imperdibile scalo è Sirmione, sulla lunga e sottile lingua di terra che si protende verso il largo dividendo i goli di Desenzano e Peschiera. Celebrata nell’antichità da Catullo e poi da Stendhal, Lawrence e Goethe, oggi deve parte della sua fama alle proprietà curative dell’ac-

qua termale che sgorga da una fonte al centro del lago e riempie piscine scenograicamente affacciate sulla riva. Il centro storico, dominato dall’imponente Rocca Scaligera, è un dedalo di vicoli in cui è bello perdersi a caccia di souvenir, ma il luogo più suggestivo sono senza dubbio le cosiddette Grotte di Catullo, resti di un’antica villa romana della prima età imperiale in una posizione davvero spettacolare, all’estremità della penisola (visitsirmione.com).

Per un tour lungo il côté veronese del lago, meglio imbarcarsi a Peschiera del Garda, dove si ammirano le grandiose architetture difensive e militari – dal 2017 fanno parte di un unico sito Unesco insieme ad altre cinque fortificazioni veneziane, tra Bergamo e il Montenegro –, dal ponte dei Voltoni al bastione di San Marco, dalla Palazzina Ufficiali alla Caserma di Artiglieria, parte dell’ottocentesco quartier generale asburgico (tourismpeschiera.it).

Il primo scalo è nel porticciolo di Lazise, su cui si affaccia ancora l’antica dogana. Anche qui il centro storico, con le sue case in pietra, è circondato da un anello di mura e torri medievali dominate dall’imponente Castello Scaligero (tourismlazise.it). Ultima destinazione, l’abitato che ha dato il nome al Benaco, Garda, dove si visita la Villa degli Albertini, elegante residenza settecentesca circondata da un bel giardino. Dal centro, un sentiero un po’ impervio all’interno del bosco conduce prima all’Eremo di San Giorgio, accogliente comunità monastica camaldolese (eremosangiorgio. it), e poi alla Rocca, magnifico punto panoramico dove sorgeva un castello demolito nel XIII secolo. Per lasciare nuovamente spaziare lo sguardo, imperdibile all’ora del tramonto.

Akaleidoscope of colours, from blue to emerald, taking in every shade of azure and green. Such are the waters of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake basin. A freshwater sea just waiting to be explored by boat.

By train, you can reach Desenzano or Peschiera and from there board one of the many public boats that connect the

various lakeside towns several times a day, choosing between fast hydrofoils and catamarans or a slow cruise by motor vessel. More experienced sailors can opt for a sailing boat or motorboat, available to hire with or without a skipper.

Desenzano del Garda is the best choice for exploring the Lombardy shore, from Sirmione to Manerba. But be-

fore setting sail, the town itself is well worth a visit, with several points of interest: from the Cathedral, which houses a Last Supper painted by Gian Battista Tiepolo in 1738, to the Roman Villa, dating from the 4th century, with its splendid mosaic loors. Piazza Malvezzi, the heart of the historic centre, is lined with elegant 16th-century palazzi, as is the old dock, overlooked by bars and restaurants that ill the quays with tables in summer.

The irst unmissable stop is Sirmione, set on the long, narrow strip of land that stretches out into the lake, dividing the gulfs of Desenzano and Peschiera. Celebrated in antiquity by Catullus and later by Stendhal, Lawrence and Goethe, today it owes part of its fame to the healing properties of the thermal water that springs from a source in the middle of the lake and ills scenic pools overlooking the shore. The historic centre, dominated by the imposing Scaliger Castle, is a maze of alleyways in which it is a pleasure to get lost while hunting for souvenirs. But

the most evocative place is undoubtedly the so-called Grotte di Catullo, the remains of an ancient Roman villa from the early Imperial age, set in a truly spectacular position at the far end of the peninsula.

Opposite, on the Lombardy shore, a succession of places rich in history awaits, such as Padenghe and Moniga, where traces of settlements from the Early Bronze Age have been found. Visitors disembark to visit Padenghe Castle, a 12th-century stronghold contested over time by Brescians and Veronese, Venetians, French and Austrians, yet still one of the best-preserved in the area. From here, the view opens out across the entire lower lake and over the vineyards of Valtenesi, where the excellent Riviera del Garda Classico DOC is produced.

clearest days. Climbing towards the summit of the Rocca, located within the Rocca and Sasso Nature Reserve, visitors encounter medieval fortiications brought back to light by recent excavations, as well as the Valtenesi Archaeological Museum, whose large glass window looks out over the landscape.

the lake, it is better to board at Peschiera del Garda, where impressive defensive and military architecture can be admired. The irst stop is the little harbour of Lazise, still overlooked by the old customs house. Here too, the historic centre, with its stone houses, is enclosed by a ring of medieval walls and towers dominated by the imposing Scaliger Castle. From here, visitors set sail once again towards Bardolino, halfway along the eastern shore, at the widest point of the lake. The town of Chiaretto wine, announced by a large Ferris wheel on the lakeside promenade, is surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation of olive trees, cypresses, oleanders and vines. It invites visitors to buy local products such as Bardolino DOC wine and Garda DOP olive oil, to which a ine museum is dedicated.

The inal destination is the town that gave Benaco its name: Garda. Here, visitors can admire Villa degli Albertini, an elegant 18th-century residence surrounded by a beautiful garden. From the centre, a rather rugged path through the woods leads irst to the Hermitage of San Giorgio, a welcoming Camaldolese monastic community, and then to the Rocca, a magniicent panoramic viewpoint where a castle once stood before being demolished in the 13th century. To let your gaze wander freely once more, it is an unmissable spot at sunset.

From 7 to 9 August, Medieval Week returns to enliven the symbolic places of Frederick II’s city. At its heart is the historical re-enactment of the wedding of his son Manfredi

Frederick II of Swabia, Holy Roman Emperor in the 13th century, was in love with Apulia, and here he had a series of castles built as testimony to his power, wealth and taste. These include the world-famous Castel del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Andria, and Trani’s Swabian Castle, built in the local white stone and seeming almost suspended above the sea. It was here, in 1259, that the wedding of Frederick’s son Manfred and Helena Komnene, Princess of Epirus, was celebrated; and it is still heretodaythatvisitorscanwatchitsre-enactment, with participants dressed in period costume.

to the harbour, teeming with life among ishing boats, pleasure craft and the many bars and restaurants that make it, in every season, the hub of the town’s nightlife. The Church of the Templars is also relected in the harbour waters: according to medieval chroniclers, it was from here that the irst Crusaders set sail.

A regular ixture of Trani’s summer, The Wedding of King Manfredi is the highlight of MedievalWeek (Facebook: tranitradizioni), a collective ritual and journey through memory that has been celebrated in this coastal town for more than twenty years: from the staging of the irst meeting between Helena and Manfred to the historical procession and the celebrations at the Castle, with banquets, medieval dances, ire shows and the recreation of ancient markets.

This year, due to the temporary closure of Piazza Re Manfredi, the heart of the event will be Piazza Duomo, in front of the Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, one of the inest examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture, with Byzantine, Gothic and Norman inluences. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, the basilica is in fact made up of three churches superimposed on one another, layered over time — the hypogeum of San Leucio dates back to the 5th-7th centuries — where soaring lines, spaces deined by paired columns, unique in Apulia, Arab-inspired decorations and a mosaic loor with references to the Old Testament all follow one another.Withitsdazzlingwhitelimestonefaçade,ittoo seems suspended above the sea, which almost entirely surrounds it. A short walk away, visitors can enter the narrow streets of the Giudecca, the ancient Jewish quarter, which bears witness to the privileges granted to the community by Frederick. Here, it is possible to visit the Scolanova Synagogue, built in the 13th century and the only survivor of the four that were once active, nowreopened for worship. Between the old town and the 19th-century district, Palazzo Beltrani — once a historic intellectual salon and now a museum space under the name Palazzo delleArti — houses a precious collection of art-history volumes and, on the second loor, the picture gallery dedicated to Trani-born artist Ivo Scaringi. From 11 to 26 September, the Palazzo will host several events from the festival I Dialoghi di Trani, one of the most important cultural events of the Italian summer (idialoghiditrani.com). L’annuncio era arrivato mesi fa con un post su Instagram proprio da parte della popstar. Oggi quell’annuncio è realtà. A 21 anni di distanza dal suo lavoro più iconico, “Confessions on a Dance Floor”, Madonna lancia “Confessions II”: dodici brani più quattro tracce bonus, tutti su un unico disco contenuto in un digipack che include anche un poster pieghevole. Un tuffo nelle sonorità e nei successi del passato suggelato anche dal ritorno in Warner Record, l’etichetta che l’ha fatta diventare una superstar e con cui ha pubblicato gran parte della sua discografia storica, dal debutto del 1983 fino all’album “Hard Candy”. «È stata una vera partner per me - aveva dichiarato Madonna -. COME COMPORTARSI in caso d’emergenza WHAT TO DO in an emergency

Nella condizione ordinaria di marcia in sicurezza, i passeggeri devono occupare esclusivamente gli spazi idonei al loro trasporto in modo da non ostacolare il personale di bordo nell’espletamento delle attività connesse con la sicurezza e eventuali operazioni di evacuazione del treno in emergenza. In caso di evacuazione del treno in emergenza è necessario attenersi alle istruzioni del personale di bordo prestando attenzione al rispetto delle seguenti istruzioni di carattere generale:

■ Abbandonare il treno senza indugi, in maniera ordinata e con calma;

■ Aiutare chi si trovi in difficoltà, con priorità a soggetti “sensibili” (bambini, donne in stato di gravidanza, por- tatori di handicap, ecc.);

■ Abbandonare i bagagli e non tornare indietro per nessun motivo;

■ In presenza di fumo o fiamme camminare chini.

In ordinary condition of safe running, travellers must remain in their assigned seats so that they do not prevent the work of on-board staff performing safety-related tasks or interfere with train evacuation in the event of an emergency. Per un ordinato e rapido esodo dalla galleria è necessario attenersi alle istruzioni fornite dal personale ferroviario direttamente o mediante gli impianti di diffusione sonora, prestando comunque osservanza alle seguenti indicazi generale:

1. Una volta discesi dal treno occorre dirigersi verso la direzione più opportuna per l’esodo seguendo i cartelli segnaletici affissi sulla parete della galleria e/o le indicazioni fornite dal personale ferroviario;

2. La galleria dovrà essere percorsa camminando esclusivamente sul marciapiede laterale della stessa evitando di invadere i binari;

3. L’attraversamento dei binari, se necessario per raggiungere l’uscita, deve essere preventivamente autorizzato dal personale ferroviario;

4. Durante l’esodo occorre mantenere la calma, non spingere o accalcarsi con le persone che precedono, non creare allarmismo;

5. Aiutare, per quanto possibile, le persone a mobilità ridotta;

6. Una volta raggiunta l’uscita occorre non disperdersi e seguire le istruzioni impartite dalle squadre di soccorso.

SALVATE LA MONTAGNA DALL’OVERTOURISM

UNO DEI SOGNI DELLA MIA VITA è di raggiungere la Capanna Margherita, il rifugio più alto d’Europa, adibito anche alla ricerca scientifica: si trova sulla Punta Gnifetti del Massiccio del Monte Rosa, la montagna che amo di più e che credo di conoscere abbastanza bene. Ma alla Punta Gnifetti, sul ghiacciaio, non sono appunto mai arrivata, per cui osservo piena di ammirazione l’attrezzatura e la bardatura di fine Ottocento della Regina Margherita, che la raggiunse nel 1893 fra fotografie e stampe celebrative e alla quale è stata appunto dedicata, e mi domando come facessero queste donne, avvolte in strati di abiti pesanti, a salire come stambecchi, quando io ritengo faticosa la passeggiata fino all’Alpe Veglia con un’attrezzatura leggerissima. Questo, in prossimità delle estati in montagna, che sono l’ultima moda di questi anni in cui stravaccarsi in spiaggia è diventato cheap, mi fa ricordare tutti gli incontri che ho fatto lungo le mie passeggiate in questi ultimi anni, anche in Val Grande dove il cellulare non prende e dunque devi saper leggere le mappe: genitori con le infradito da spiaggia dell’estate precedente e l’infante sulle spalle, ragazzine con le unghione rosa e le ciglia finte (niente di male, per carità, ma si suda e ogni tanto tocca aggrapparsi), disperati della musica techno con Spotify a palla, che magari pretendono pure di incontrare qualche animale, si spera per non fargli la pelle; quelli che gli viene il mancamento, dunque mangiano una barretta energetica e visto che si stanno già stancando abbastanza non ripongono l’involucro nello zaino, ma lo buttano lì dove si trovano. Quelli che si accendono una sigaretta (c’è gente che non l’ha ancora capita e fuma; sempre meno e sempre meno acculturati, ma ci sono) e non sono sicuri di aver schiacciato bene il mozzicone, ma che volete che sia. In sostanza: urla, rumore, rischi per tutti. L’assalto alla montagna di questi anni dovrebbe essere regolato con un patentino. E il Daspo per gli indesiderati.

All this, as the mountain summers approach — the latest trend of recent years, now that sprawling on a beach has become cheap — makes me think back to all the people I have encountered on my walks over the past few years, even in Val Grande, where there is no mobile signal and you therefore need to know how to read a map: parents in last summer’s beach lip-lopswithachildontheirshoulders;teenagegirlswithhugepinknails and false eyelashes — nothing wrong with that, of course, except that you sweat and sometimes have to grab onto things; desperate techno lovers blasting Spotify at full volume, who perhaps even expect to spot some wildlife,hopefullynotinordertokillit;thosewhofeelfaint,eatanenergy bar and, since they are already quite tired enough, do not put the wrapper back in their backpack but simply drop it where they stand.

Then there are those who light a cigarette — some people still have not understood and continue to smoke; fewer and fewer of them, and less and lesseducated,buttheydoexist—andarenotquitesuretheyhavestubbed out the cigarette butt properly, but what harm could it do?

In short: shouting, noise, risks for everyone. The assault on the mountains in recent years should be regulated with a licence. And with a banning order for undesirables.
