Isle of Man Stamps and Coins Newsletter 191

Page 1

Hello from the Isle of Man, Welcome to your copy of Isle of Man Stamp and Coin News. My goodness the summer has flown by with more than average sunshine and even a bit of a drought in some parts of our Island, including the grass in my own garden!

We are enjoying the last public holiday of the summer, the Island is buzzing with fans here to join in many motorsport events including the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT. We also had two cruise ships in Douglas Bay alongside the Ben My Chree – it really is a good time to share “Our Story of Mann” with you through our latest Collections Manx Military & Aviation Museum Inc. 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This Museum is remarkable for the work it has done over the last 25 years to gather up as much information as possible about the role of Manxmen, woman and children in conflicts over the last 125 years. A big part of the archive covers the many varied roles undertaken by service people who came here to train in wartime.

Rick Wakeman by Roger Dean is a stellar combination of creative talent, it gets no better! A celebration of Rick’s immense musical achievements many of which took place while living on our Island, coupled with the amazing artworks of his long-time collaborator Roger Dean.

Brewed on Mann shares the history of the many breweries in Manx history, principally to serve the tourists for time immemorial when one or two locals have said “down the hatch” in village pubs that are the centre of many Manx communities. We hope you like our “brew” of eight stamps

Finally, Crank up Christmas has been created by the students of University College Isle of Man. I had the

great honour to go and meet with the students and their lecturers. They gave me so much of a boost to my day with their enthusiasm, sense of team and unified vision for the brief. Some are carrying on with their studies, others are going off in different directions but their work on this project will forever unite them in Stanley Gibbons, Michel, Linns and the Royal Philatelic Collection to name but a few keepers of the Isle of Man Stamp archive.

Talking of proud, August was the month for it. A collector commented to me that to speak with a real person who picked up the phone within a few rings and was knowledgeable and friendly was a very rare thing these days and to be commended. Long may that be, you are all very important to us.

As a thank you for your continued support throughout 2025 we would like to extend the gift of 10% of any additional purchases you wish to make by quoting “THANKS10”* either by order form, letter, phone, email or in our web shop. All good wishes and sincere thanks,

BATTLE OF BRITAIN 85TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATED WITH ISLE OF MAN FLOWN STAMP SHEET

As part of the release of our Battle of Britain 85th Anniversary sheet we were honoured to play a small role in national commemorations. Through our partnership with the RAF Benevolent Fund, we were honoured to see the sheets taken to the Battle of Britain Sunday service at Westminster Abbey on 21st September. The following morning we welcomed OC 32 The Royal Squadron from RAF Northolt, who carried a selection of the stamp sheets aboard the flight. Volunteers from the Manx Aviation and Military Museum were on hand to meet the Squadron as part of their 25th anniversary year.

A strictly limited edition of only 250 flown Battle of Britain 85th Anniversary sheets, complete with a special certificate of authenticity, will be offered online via iomstamps.com/AviationMuseum

New Collection

Issue Date: 15.09.25

Isle of Man Post Office presents a collection of six stamps marking the 25th anniversary of the Manx Aviation and Military Museum and its fascinating contents.

Ivor Ramsden MBE, Director of the Manx Aviation and Military Museum writes… Founded in 2000 by a group of aviation and military history enthusiasts in the Isle of Man, the museum is run entirely by volunteers and has grown in size and reputation, becoming a very popular and highly regarded facility for the casual visitor or the serious researcher.

The museum encompasses not only the history of Manx aviation but also the roles that the Island and its people played in both world wars.

Particularly notable is the way the museum features the stories of individual people who, reluctantly or otherwise, went to war - giving a rare insight into how ordinary men and women felt and acted while doing their duty.

World War I

More than 8,000 people left the Island in WW1 to join the forces or to work in industry. Of these, more than 1,300 lost their lives to enemy action and to diseases such as dysentery and malaria; more than 500 have no known grave. A very moving gallery is devoted to telling the stories of some of these people, showing medals, equipment, photographs and souvenirs brought back from the front.

World War II

The Island played a significant role in training service people in WW2. Three airfields were built to train Royal Navy torpedo bomber crews and Royal Air Force aircrew. Fighter squadrons were stationed here early in the war to protect shipping in the Irish Sea from attacks by enemy aircraft. Many of the thousands of men and women of all three services who trained here came from the Commonwealth countries and the occupied countries of Europe.

Large numbers of Manx people joined the forces. The Manx Regiment, a regiment of light anti-

aircraft artillery, was raised in 1938. It served with distinction starting during the Battle of Britain when it defended RAF airfields, docks and radar stations on the south coast of England. It later fought in North Africa, Italy and North-West Europe, ending the war with an impressive record of enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged.

VJ Day - Victory in Japan

The campaign in the Far East was somewhat overshadowed by the parallel conflict closer to home in Europe. John Douglas Clague was one of many Manxmen who served there and whose story is a very unusual one. 21-year-old ‘Duggie’ Clague was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Manx Regiment in 1938. He left the regiment in 1940, joining another anti-aircraft unit in Hong Kong where he was captured by the Japanese on Christmas Day 1941.

Duggie bravely led several men from his prison camp in an escape to China where he worked with Chinese guerrilla forces for several months. He was awarded the Military Cross for leading the escape and became involved with the British Army Aid Group, a secretive unit set up to assist with escapes from Japanese prisoner of war camps, particularly those in Thailand. His skills were recognised and he ended the war with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, also being made a CBE. He stayed in Hong Kong after the war and was knighted in 1971.

Civil Aviation

The museum records the history of civil aviation from a balloon flight in 1902 to modern days with information about the Island’s airfields and the many airlines that used them. This includes an exhibition on Manx Airlines, including a British Aerospace ATP turboprop, painted in the eyecatching Manx Airlines livery and carrying the registration G - MAUD.

Korea

Very much a forgotten war, the museum’s display on the conflict in Korea focuses on a small number of the Island’s men who were involved, ranging from an army dentist to an escaped prisoner of war. One of the most poignant stories is that of a young lad, Billy Thomas, who lived in Pulrose and went to Hanover Street School in Douglas. Billy died of gunshot wounds in September 1951. His eldest brother, Lance Corporal Jack Thomas, was killed in Belgium in 1940.

Museum

From model soldiers to memorials dedicated to people lost in aircraft accidents, the museum hosts a wide range of objects. Artefacts found at crash sites both on land and under the sea illustrate the toll of lives lost particularly in wartime training flights. The scope is almost endless and with more than 12,000 items in its collection one of the museum curator’s most difficult jobs is deciding what NOT to put on display. The museum holds a Japanese officer’s sword which was surrendered to the British forces in 1945.

Rick Wakeman seen through the artworks of Roger Dean.

A unique collaboration spanning six decades of music and art.

Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to present a set of six stamps celebrating the life and works of Rick Wakeman CBE as seen through the artworks of long-time collaborator Roger Dean, whose iconic stage sets will be familiar to fans around the world, his artworks gracing the covers of many of Rick’s Albums.

Music Journalist Millie Glazier writes…

In any assessment of the most influential pianists in history, Rick Wakeman CBE unquestionably deserves a distinguished place in the hall of fame. Praised for his iconic compositions and extravagant stage presence, the rock star legend has become a remarkable part of music history and a huge influence on the development of contemporary rock music.

Early life

Born in London in 1949, Rick has fond memories of musical Sunday evenings at home. At five he began piano lessons, passing eight grades with distinction and winning numerous music festival awards. At 12 he formed his own trad jazz band Brother Wakeman and the Clergymen, which was followed by The Atlantic Blues, The Concords and Curdled Milk.

The 1960s

Rick joined the Ronnie Smith Band in 1966 while still a student. In 1968, he was accepted into the prestigious Royal College of Music. He left the band in 1969 and left the college a year later to embark on his career. While at college he established himself as a popular session musician, completing up to 18 session recordings a week. He collaborated with iconic artists such as David Bowie on the revolutionary track Space Oddity. It is estimated that Rick has contributed to more than 2,000 records.

After working with Strawbs in the studio, he left his current band The Spinning Wheel to join them. Their live album Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios catapulted Rick into a whirlwind of media attention

The 1970-80s

In 1971, Rick joined the progressive rock band YES; touring America and contributing to their seminal album Fragile. Fans and critics often rate it as the band’s finest studio recording. After signing a deal with A&M Records, Rick embarked on a solo career while recording with YES. He followed the band’s 1972 album Close to the Edge with his own release, The Six Wives of

Henry VIII, it was a worldwide success.

1974 was probably the most significant year in Rick’s career. He recorded Journey to the Centre of the Earth with the London Symphony Orchestra - a groundbreaking work that reached the top 10 charts in nearly every country and led to a global tour.

Rick’s punishing work schedule caught up with him, he collapsed after a performance at the Crystal Palace Bowl in 1975. However, while in hospital, he wrote what was to become another legendary album, The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

In 1976, Rick re-joined YES for their album Going For The One, and continued to record and tour his own work including scores for the horror film The Burning, the soundtrack for the 1976 Winter Olympics, and G’olé, the official documentary film of the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

Rick moved to the Isle of Man in 1987, writing, composing and performing from his converted coaching house studio. He recorded prolifically there for more than a decade, including initial recordings of Return to the Centre of the Earth and the new age Aspirant Trilogy His time on the Island also inspired a deeply personal work: The Heritage Suite. This solo piano album celebrates local landmarks — from St Michael’s Isle to Spanish Head — produced in association with Manx National Heritage.

The 1990s

Rick kept busy, with an autobiography, Say YES! the music for Cirque Surreal, a human circus (whose musical director was his son Adam), and scoring two Michael Caine films, Bullet to Beijing and Midnight in St Petersburg. Border Television filmed his New Gospels album performance at Peel Castle, which was shown on ITV over Christmas 1995.

Rick started work on his acclaimed album, Return to the Centre of the Earth, in his home studio on the Isle of Man.

The 2000s

Rick recorded The Chronicles of Man as a ‘thank you’ to the heritage of the Isle of Man, where he had lived happily for many years.

In 2003, Rick became a Grumpy Old Man appearing in every episode of the hit TV series; he appeared on Countdown almost 100 times and was a regular contributor to programmes on BBC Radio 2, 3 and 4. He wrote and published two books, Grumpy Old Rockstar and Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rockstar. As the decade ended, Rick performed The Six Wives of Henry VIII in a spectacular show at Hampton Court Palace to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s ascension to the throne. 2010s to the present day

In 2016, Rick reunited with former YES members Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin to form Anderson Rabin Wakeman. In January 2017, he made UK chart history

when Piano Portraits became the first solo piano album to enter the Top 10 on release, reaching No. 6 –a feat repeated in 2018 with Piano Odyssey.

In 2017, along with other members of YES, Rick was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but, undoubtedly, the highlight of his career came in June 2021, when the late Queen Elizabeth II named him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music.

Rick continues to entertain all generations with his extensive discography of timeless hits. He has lived by the rules of a true music legend to ‘rock on’ despite any difficulties. From selling more than 20 million records to inspiring collaborations with other artists and experimental solo work, Rick Wakeman’s legacy is firmly secured as a revolutionary pioneer of composition, and one of the most inspirational musicians of all time.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to share this fascinating collection of stamps studying the history of Manx brewing. The Isle of Man has a rich and distinctive brewing history shaped by tradition and a strong sense of identity.

Brewing on the Isle of Man can be traced back to the early medieval period, when beer was originally brewed in households and monasteries using locally grown barley. By the 18th and 19th centuries, brewing had become more commercialised as the Island developed as a centre of trade and tourism.

Adulterated beer was a widespread problem in the 1800s so The Brewers Act(otherwise known as the Manx Pure Beer Act) - was introduced by Tynwald initially in 1827 and updated in 1874. It mandates that beer be brewed using only water, malt, hops, and yeast. The Act remains a unique and enduring piece of legislation still enforced to this day.

Okell’s Brewery – 175th Anniversary

Okell’s Brewery, the oldest brewery on the Island, celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2025. Okell’s can trace its roots back to 1850 when Dr William Okell, a Cheshire surgeon, took over the role of brewery manager at Dutton’s Brewery at Castle Hill.

At the time, the Isle of Man was home to a multitude of small-scale brewers but Dr Okell was a man of ambition. He soon established his own Falcon Brewery which was built to a new patented steam design that had been displayed at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in London in 1851.

Dr Okell was a keen proponent of the Pure Beer Act, ensuring that Okell’s ales were “of the purest quality”, a description that is still applied today.

The Falcon Brewery quickly expanded and, by 1871, Dr Okell’s eldest son, also called William, was established in the business and another son, Douglas, sent to Liverpool to manage a brewing venture. A new Falcon Brewery was opened in Douglas in 1876 and sales continued to thrive.

Whilst Dr Okell passed away in 1892, aged 73, his tactical business moves and dedication to adopting the best brewing techniques ensured his brewery survived the ups and downs of the Manx economy.

In addition to its traditional range of bitters and pale ales, this year a special limited edition smoked porter has been brewed to celebrate the 175th anniversary in tribute to Dr Okell and his magnificent legacy to Manx brewing.

Bushy’s Brewery

The first Bushy’s beer, Old Bushy Tail, was brewed in the cellars of the former Grand Hotel in Victoria Street, Douglas in November 1985 by the brewery founder Martin Brunnschweiler. Bushy’s Brewpub expanded over the next five years until a new fully fledged brewery was opened in 1990 at Mount Murray with the world renowned beer writer Michael (Beerhunter) Jackson cutting the ribbon.

Bushy’s brought a new energy to the Island’s brewing scene which appealed greatly to the visiting biker fraternity and has been enjoyed at the famous Bushy’s beer tent since the original pub closed in 1998.

2025 sees the brewery celebrate 40 years of fine Manx beers and supporting Manx farmers by using locally grown barley.

Modern Day Manx Brewing

The industry has seen significant growth and resurgence in recent years, with breweries such as Kaneen’s Brewery, Kerroo Brewing Company and Noa Brewhouse amongst others, marking a new and exciting era of innovation.

Stamp 1 - The Pure Beer Act – leading the world in establishing regulation and standards in the production of fine beers.

Stamp 2 - Dr Okell - a visionary and pioneer of brewing techniques based on purity and quality.

Stamp 3 - The Falcon Brewery, the site of Okell’s operations for more than 100 years.

Stamp 4 - A range of historical bottles from breweries no longer trading, displaying the evolution of Manx brewing.

Stamp 5 - An historic image from the Manx National Heritage Archive of the horse and dray cart operated by the former Castletown Brewery. The buildings can still be seen today and has been sympathetically restored.

Stamp 6 - The Island’s oldest public house, the Mitre Pub in Kirk Michael is mentioned on plans drawn in 1785 and was a coach house inn serving as a resting place for travellers and horses, providing food, drink, and accommodation.

Stamp 7 - The evolution from earthenware reusable bottles to recycled materials used in modern canning lines. The investment in the future of Manx brewing continues.

Stamp 8 – Bushy’s first venue, the former Yates Wine Lodge Public House at the bottom of Victoria Street, Douglas – where crowds would gather from around the world during TT week to savour every moment of the post-race atmosphere.

New Collection

The 2025 Christmas Stamps from Isle of Man Post Office are created in collaboration with students and alumni from University College Isle of Man (UCM) to mark the institution’s Milestone Celebrations.

The Story of the 2025 Christmas Stamps

Throughout 2025, UCM has been celebrating some key milestones:

• 145 years since the Douglas School of Art

• 50 years since the official opening of the Homefield Road Campus

• 10+ years of The Annie Gill Centre

Creative Media students, led by Creative Media Lecturer Ewan Macfarlane, were extremely excited to be working on this project. As well as contributing to their overall mark, the opportunity to create a prestigious stamp issue which would be approved by the King himself, was an opportunity not to be missed.

Working with UCM’s Marketing team, the students decided to focus on Manx Christmas traditions as a way of linking UCM, the Isle of Man and Christmas all together. The students brainstormed old Manx traditions and how they could integrate them into the stamps.

Each tells the story of Christmas Traditions from the viewpoint of the UCM students and alumni who designed the stamp.

Stamp 1

Designed by alumni and current UCM Graphic Designer Gemma Sayle, this stamp celebrates the tradition of leaving treats for Father Christmas on Christmas Eve. The design features UCM’s bold red colour, the logo which celebrates the milestone celebrations and cookies of previous festive installations at UCM, a festive tradition.

Stamp 2

Designed by Level 3 Student Izabela (Rue) Garczynska, this stamp celebrates ‘The White Boys’ play, with the main ‘White Boys’ character running through the stamps. The design

represents UCM, (Isle of Man College) 1975 - 1985 – including the official opening of the Homefield Road Campus on 9th May 1975.

Stamp 3

Designed by Level 2 Students, this stamp celebrates the charitable community events, such as the annual Santa’s on a Bike and Santa Run. The design represents UCM’s Digital Enterprise faculty which includes the support of these events by local businesses (Business) recording of the event (Media), digital equipment and drones (IT) and a graduate in the crowd (Education).

Stamp 4

Designed by Level 2 Students, this stamp celebrates the community gathering to switch on the Christmas Lights in Regent Street, Douglas, former home of Postal Headquarters.
