DEL TURA DELIVERS ACTS OF KINDNESS We continue to be impacted by COVID19 here at Del Tura. While the golf course has recently opened to members only with proper social distancing guidelines, everything else remains closed as of April 20th. With that said, there have been many acts of kindness by so many at Del Tura. Many have pulled out the sewing machines and are making masks that are donated to various health care facilities or for residents to wear for safety sake. If you know of any of these sewing angels, and have elastic to donate, I am certain they would appreciate it.

Additionally, a small group organized an effort to collect funds and goods to donate to other residents in need during the pandemic. See the Motorcycle club article for additional info on this effort. I also am aware of some that are picking up groceries for neighbors who have more risk being in the public market. I am certain there are many other acts of kindness occurring daily by those of us living in Del Tura. I would like to dedicate a section of the next Tower to everyone who has stepped up in any way (big or small) to do positive things to help others.

To that end, please forward any names and activities, as well as any photos you may want to share to toweredit@yahoo.com at your earliest convenience and we will include this in the next issue of the Tower. The deadline for the June issue is the 9th of May, however, please continue to send acts of kindness to us and we will share these acts in the June issue of the Tower. My hope is that we will soon return to all our favorite activities, but as a community we are strong and recognizing all of the positive that is done here is always something to celebrate.

President’s Korner… By David Klein Well, this last month has been challenging! We have a major pandemic threatening us, the community is in a lockdown mode, and we’ve had some board resignations. We asked our HOA Members for volunteers for the Board replacements and had a good response. The candidates that did not get elected in the election in January were asked if they wanted to be considered for the Board and some agreed. Other people stepped forward and applied. The Board filled the positions in accordance with the bylaws and as a result, Gail Hodge, Ray David and Ron Turner have joined the Board. Congratulations to them for their volunteer service. We all know the pandemic will end and the HOA Board wants to continue to fulfill as many of the functions it performs while we are in a Stay at Home mode. The committees have been filled with a lot of the existing volunteers and some new volunteers. They are ready to function when we get back to normal. The new grounds committee consists of Ray David and Dave Tomaszewski. Call or email them with any safety or common area issues. Their numbers are in this Tower. Call your Board members with any other questions

As you probably are aware, we will be rolling out an email system where all residents who voluntarily sign up will receive their HOA news through it. However, don’t worry as the old notification systems will stay in place as we know that some of our residents don’t have email addresses. The bulletin Boards in the HOA office when reopened will hold news items. We also have a website for any important news including our Board minutes and news from the Board. We are planning to expand news stories in The Tower. The Board continues to operate and have meetings, although it is in a teleconferencing mode. Somewhere around 40-50 members attended the last teleconference. We all play golf & tennis together, we have drinks at the pub, we enjoy many of the fine entertainment events sponsored by the HOA, we play bingo & cards and enjoy the camaraderie of our friends and acquaintances. We all love our children, our grandchildren and great grandchildren. While we all may never be good friends, we need to learn to live together and respect each other. So please, during these trying times, please avoid petty squabbles and instead, enjoy your little slice of paradise here at Del Tura.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Liz Poniatowski Blessed are those who expect nothing; for they shall not be disappointed. Wow! What a month we’ve had! If you’re watching the news all you’re hearing about is the Coronavirus. All Del Tura events have stopped. Everything is closed. We are frozen in time. The world, as we knew it, has changed drastically. The only thing we have to do now is to stay home. Protect yourself while protecting others. Wear a face mask, wash your hands, stay 6 feet apart, don’t gather in groups.

What a challenge. Especially if you’re single and live alone. There’s a difference between choosing to stay home alone and being told you should stay home and not go out and socialize with others. In catching up with my Good Timers’ I’ve found out that we still go on filling our days with fun stuff even if we have to do it alone. Jane put up a “lending library” full of books, Cindy did the same with puzzles, Marcella adopted a new fur baby, Ruth is forever busy making goodies to share, Sandra is having food delivered, Joan is busy with her garden, Alice is keeping busy making phone calls and keeping in touch with family.

Most of us are catching up on our reading, binge watching our favorite shows, some, like Ann, are lucky enough to be able to work from home to keep that paycheck coming in. Life goes on and we will all get through this together! Right now, meetings are canceled until further notice. Once we get the “all clear” we will start socializing again and we’ll have something to celebrate too! Hang in there everyone for soon we will gather and continue on with our lives here in Paradise! The COMEDY SHOW scheduled for March 14th, cancelled due to the Coronavirus, has been rescheduled for next year March 20th, 2021. Those of you that purchased tickets for this year’s show will have the same table seating

next year as is on your current purchased tickets, so hang on to them. If you would rather get a refund for your tickets, they must be turned in as purchased (if you bought 4, turn in 4) and have the original purchaser’s signature written on the back of each ticket purchased and returned by the original purchaser. Support for Community is a Top Priority In today’s challenging times, Edward Jones financial advisors are thinking about the health of their clients, their families and their colleagues, what’s happening in their communities and the effect of Covid-19 on the markets. “Most importantly, we want everyone to know we’re taking steps to protect the health and well-being of our clients, associates, families and communities,” Adam Hromiak says. “We’re right here in the community with you, going through this together as neighbors and friends. And we will get through this together.” To help reduce the impact of the coronavirus, financial advisors are taking several steps, including suspending face-to-face residential visits with clients, holding “virtual” meetings and training sessions and ensuring office spaces are sanitized and disinfected. “Like everyone, we really have to do our part to help mitigate this crisis,” Hromiak says. “But since our entire reason for being in business is to help our clients enjoy more rewarding lives, we feel that our efforts now are just an extension of that.” Of course, people’s financial situations also weigh on their minds. “The current market selloff is certainly concerning, but it seems to be driven more by fear and panic than by economic or financial reality,” Hromiak says. Monetary and fiscal policy are necessary, but at the end of the day, it will be the medical progress that will dictate the timeline for reducing market volatility and the ultimate rebound in stocks. Hromiak said Edward Jones expects daily volatility to persist until new virus cases begin to slow, but added that investors should find optimism in these facts: unemployment is near a 50-year low, with solid wage growth; there’s been an uptick in the housing market, which may accelerate due to declining mortgage rates; and the Federal Reserve has cut short-term interest rates back near 0%. Furthermore, the drop in investment prices may indicate that the financial markets have already “priced in” the likelihood of a short-term recession. “This could mean that we’ve already endured much of the stock market pain, ,” Hromiak says. “And even a short recession is of concern to all of us, since it’s likely to bring a least a temporary disruption to an otherwise strong labor market.” For investors wondering what to do now, Hromiak offers these suggestions: First, remember why you’re investing. “With the market decline, people will be tempted to change their investment strategies,” Hromiak says. “But they need to keep in mind that most of their financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, are long-term in nature – a lot longer-term than the shelf life of the coronavirus. If investors have established a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for their needs, they should stick with it, no matter what today’s headlines are.” However, Hromiak does suggest that individuals who are particularly concerned over the current results of their investment statements might want to evaluate their risk tolerance. “If you are truly losing sleep over what’s going on in the markets, it’s possible your portfolio is positioned too aggressively for the amount of risk with which you’re comfortable,” Hromiak says. “In that case, you should work with your financial advisor to see if you need to adjust your investment mix to include more fixed-income securities, which can provide some downside protection, but you’ll be making a trade-off, because you’ll also be affecting your longterm growth potential.” Finally, Hromiak says, now might actually be a good time for investors to consider actually adding to their portfolios. “Right now, many stocks are at their best values in more than a decade,” Hromiak says. “If you need to rebalance your portfolio, this could be a time to do so.” Ultimately, Hromiak says, investors need to realize that, while we are in somewhat uncharted times, the temptation to panic should be fought. “All our emotions are running high right now,” Hromiak says. “And while everyone’s top priority should be to protect themselves, their families and their communities, it’s still important not to lose sight of their financial well-being. One Tank Trips By Crystal S Lear I was growing restless this week and went to the closet to sample some of my favorite “imbibe-ments” and/or find better spirits, when our next trip occurred to me. I thought it would be appropriate to write my idea down while I still could, and, as I have in the past, emailed this to our Tower Editor to be included in the May TOWER. More of you, especially committee chairs and members need to write articles to share your group’s activities, when they finally become available. Include multiple pictures so we can offset advertisements with

more Del Tura articles and pictures. My trip will bring us to local destinations and hold to the Florida “stay-at-home” decree protecting us from the current plague. As you turn North out of Del Tura on US41, we will travel less than a mile to one of the most popular places to visit, namely the Dollar General. There, we will enter and look for any supplies or rations currently needed. The store has taped distancing markers for our health and should be adhered to. Next, we will continue North on US41 to Tucker’s Grade and turn left there towards I75. Passing under

the freeway bridge, we will continue to the County Park on the right and turn in. The park road meanders for several miles through beautiful marshlands and lakes as seen through the many palmetto palms and tundra unique to the area. There are multiple lake front sites to turn off and have a viewing the beauty of SW Florida nature. The road eventually comes to a turn around and you venture back through the park as we continue back towards US41 via Tucker’s Grade. At US 41, turn south towards Del Tura and home. More trips to come when/if I’m feeling more clearheaded. Cheers!

At the Hydrant On behalf of the dogs of Marianne O’Malley We need your help with re-homing our people. For some reason they have both been home continuously for more than a couple of weeks now, and we can’t take it any longer. They keep waking us up from our naps asking if we want to go outside or for a walk. And while we like treats and snacks just as much as the next dog, having to sit, gimme your paw, lie down and roll over is really, really getting annoying several times a day.

Plus, why do they insist on talking with each other when they are in opposite ends of the house? Hearing them continually yell “What?” is really startling and driving us crazy. We don’t understand why they just don’t get up and walk into the same room and nudge the other one with their nose like we do to get their attention, instead of shouting from other ends of the house. Yikes!! And we really going to lose it if we hear them say just one more time, “What do you want for dinner?” “I don’t know, what do you want for dinner?”

“Whatever you want.” “Well, what do you feel like having?” “I don’t know, what do you feel like?” We are going to start spilling our kibble all over the floor. All we have been able to do so far to vent our frustration is dig up the backyard. We are at our wit’s end! So, while we love our people very much, and it breaks our hearts to do so they either must go back to work or live somewhere else so we can go back to sleeping 18 hours a day. Somebody please help us….

Reflections… By Dianne J. Roderick

May Day Baskets, Maypoles and a Mom’s Teachings What do these three things have in common? Well first you need to know a little bit about my Mom. Perhaps you’ll recognize many of these traits as you think about your Mom. “A heart as big as the moon… a smile, that could light up the darkest corner of the earth…a touch, that could calm the roughest waters. Oh, the power of a mother’s love! A mother’s love is forever, a special love that bonds her and her child and is unselfishly shared with others”. Tradition was and is very important in our family! Mom made sure of that all through the year. Celebrations and holidays were always connected in some way with our culture. Special recipes, decorations, and customs were handed down and as with each generation someone was expected to be the Matriarch. In our family, after our Grandmothers’ passed away, our mother became the Matriarch- a role she was proud to inherit. She was the heart of our family, keeping both sides of our family together and honoring the traditions of two different cultures became her responsibility. In our home May came in more powerful than March’s reputation of coming in like the lion. Preparation for the month of May actually started the last week of April. Following the English tradition of our Dad’s family it was customary to prepare May Day Baskets. It was quite a gathering! We sat around the kitchen table, decorating small baskets with colorful crate paper and filling them with candies and cookies, or small plants. Then on the first day of May the children were sent out into the neighborhood to hang them

quietly on the doorknobs of our elderly or ailing neighbors. It was a day for spreading cheer and letting them know that others cared and were thinking of them. As children we knew we were doing acts of kindness, but we didn’t realize then that we were also learning lessons in compassion. It wasn’t until we were a little older that we realized the total impact of those little gifts of the heart. Maypole dancing was another English tradition which was enjoyed by many schoolchildren every May. I can remember dancing around the tall flagpole that had been decorated from the very top with long, colorful streamers. Boys and girls would move in and out in a graceful dance taught to us so patiently by our schoolteachers. Then after much practice, we would invite our families to come and watch our performance. We were so excited! My Grandpa was so proud! There he was standing there in his three piece brown –striped suit wearing his soft hat and a big smile on his face. (That was a rare sight… he seldom had a smile… but I know now that it must have reminded him of his home in England). Throughout the busy month of May, in between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day our family continued to work together. There were flowers to be planted and gardens to be prepared. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the fruits of our labor, but being a typical kid, did I really want to spend weekends working in the garden? When I think about it now… those were very special times. It was quality time spent with my Dad, times that bring a smile to my face as I think about those pleasant memories. He was so patient and worked so hard in that garden. I can hear my mother asking him if he had planted the kale and the mint. “Yes, dear I have!” As I mentioned earlier, Mom

was responsible to keep the traditions of two cultures together. So, on the Portuguese side you had to have the kale and the mint for those special soups that were served on those special days throughout the year. Believe me! There was enough mint and kale to feed the whole neighborhood….. and we did! On Memorial Day it was customary for the family to attend a parade that honored all the Veterans that had died in the U.S. Armed Forces. We would stand and cheer as each parade unit marched by, waving our flags so proudly. Everyone took off their caps and saluted to show respect as Old Glory passed by. Following closely behind, playing their beautiful marching music softly, were the local and neighboring high school bands. Such a proud moment for them and for us! Then it was on to the cemetery to plant flowers in memory of our loved ones. I don’t know how she remembered the locations of each gravesite. We would follow quietly along, watching as our parents placed a small plant lovingly in front of each stone. Then we would all say a silent prayer and continue on to the next gravesite. As I reflect on this now I can remember the cemetery being filled with lots of activity and yet there was a hard to describe silence, a sad heaviness to it all. As children we knew what it meant to be sad, but we truly didn’t have the life experiences to put it all together then. That indescribable silence was, as we now know as adults, is made up of emotions that come and live in our hearts each time we lose a loved one. Thankfully, we have the memories of the good times with our loved ones that also live within our hearts… these are the ones we “celebrate”, the ones that give us those warm feelings and put smiles on our faces!

Following our visit to the cemetery it was customary for the family to gather back at our house for a meal, as Mom would put it, “in memory of the souls”. There was plenty of Kale soup and Portuguese bread for all! This was a favorite time of the day for all of us, as children we learned so much about our past loved ones. It was a time of “celebrating” their lives! A time to relive the happy memories, a time for laughter and even tears (happy tears). As adults it’s important to continue sharing our “stories of the past” with each generation, as it will be for them to share with their children. At the beginning of this article I asked what Mom’s had in common with all the other

special days in May. As I reflect on those May days of the past I wonder how we managed to celebrate Mothers’ Day. My Mom use to say,” no need for a special day, every day is Mother’s Day!” I think that we can all agree that without the love and guidance of a mother we would not be who we are today. We know that Mom’s are at the “heart” of all we are. Her teachings and influence on those special days in May, and each day of our lives, becomes more pronounced as we grow older. The customs and traditions that we share and pass on to our children are truly examples of a mother’s powerful love. It is for all these reasons that Mothers’ should be honored on their special day in May. Moms’ are Amazing!!

FISH News By Ginny Benjamins FISH and CORONAVIRUS This present pandemic has changed almost every aspect of our lives. We moved to this community just for that very word…community. Now we must stay away from our friends so we can stay safe. I hope that you are all doing the same. We are lucky in the sense that we live in the time of cell phones so we can keep in touch. FISH has changed with Covid-19. Most doctors now are seeing their patients via

computer or phone. So FISH is not doing transporting. I hope you will understand. We cannot put one of our volunteers at risk. When our community can start to gather together FISH will again be back to drive you to your doctor. Please stay safe until that time. Follow all the rules such as staying at least six feet away from people and wear a covering over your mouth. Try to only grocery shop when you must. FISH and CORONAVIRUS are two words I would have never thought to be in the same sentence. Take care everyone.

Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop As with all other activities in Del Tura that have been carried on in the common areas, our Creative Writers Workshop has been temporarily suspended. My hope is that, by the time this edition of the Tower goes to print, the lifestyle that we loved and may have taken for granted will have been restored.

Sunset By Nancy Ashe Another day has passed and is forever claimed to history in all of our lives. Daily turmoil, work requirements, schedules, illnesses occupy the world we live in. Often, it is very difficult to imagine or feel all the other problems permeating our society. There are too many to mention, but as we live, grow, mature and develop our own stories, we continuously become more aware of the varied trials that life proposes. Carpe Diem, “seize the day” is a saying to proclaim a feelgood attitude to a new day. I say, look up at sunset and capture the end of the day to carry you into quiet, peaceful slumber, to transport your

dreams toward a brand-new day. View the magical rotation of our planet as we revolve away from the fire of day that keeps us warm, feeds our fruit and vegetables, nourishes our vegetation to protect our wildlife and feed many creatures. We see the never-ending sky painting a glorious vision of multiple colors and robust characters that we refer to as clouds. Take a moment to unpack your troubles and look up to find the peace and serenity that awaits you. I have reviewed all the submittals of our group to date and selected three that I feel are uplifting. I think we all can use a little bit of that right now. In the meantime, I know I speak for all of our group in extending our best wishes to all for your safety and good health.

Make a date with sunset - no coupons needed; it’s free and will never disappoint. Paradise By Barbara Jones From the back of my house I can see a golf green and a golf tee box. These two areas provide an enormous amount of entertainment. The body language of the golfers always indicate if the putt goes in or if it misses the cup. When golfers leave the tee box, their body language says if the ball is out of bounds or on the green. The green and the tee box not only provide human entertainment, but is a source of immaculate lawn maintenance. Every morning as the clock strikes 6:00AM the machines start cutting, clipping, fertilizing, blowing, etc. Because of these activities, there is beautiful green grass to admire every day. Not only do I enjoy the beautiful manicured golf course, but so do the animals that call these areas home. There are a variety of animals that live on the golf course by my house but there are some I enjoy more than others. Most mornings when the blinds next to the golf course are opened, I see the beautiful colors of an exquisite sunrise and usually four or five ducks walking around the tee box. Sometimes there are also several browsing the area. Then, of course, when there is a break in the golfers during the day my favorite ducks appear… the Muscovy ducks. One of my Muscovy stories started happening this summer. I noticed in the morning a mother and seven babies walking across the green to the tee box and into the pond. In the evening, I witnessed the same mother and seven babies

walk back across the tee box and the green into the other pond. The last time I observed this family of teenagers there were only five of them and the mother, but they were still walking in a straight, single line. The mother, of course, was leading. Turtles are also frequent guests in this area. When one of them decides to go from one pond to the other, it takes a while. Sometimes they must stop and rest in the street that goes between the green, tee box and the two ponds. When that happens, usually a car or a golf cart stops, and the driver gets out and helps the turtle out of the street. If the driver puts the turtle back on the side of the street that he was leaving, the turtle starts his voyage all over again. One evening I witnessed nine sand cranes on the other side of the green. They seemed to be just leisurely socializing with each other after having their dinner at a bird feeder up the street. When squirrels get excited, they do lots of talking. About a month ago while I was working in the yard, I heard lots of chatter from a squirrel up in a tree. The reason for the chatter was a bunny sitting next to the tree. I continued to work, the squirrel maintained his chatter and the bunny stayed in his space. When I returned to the yard later the bunny had not moved but was gone when I checked the second time. The bunny returned the next evening to the same place without the chattering squirrel. In addition to the beautiful golf course, the entertaining golfers and the delightful animals, the back of my house has a view of a lighted fountain that runs 24/7. This fountain

provides a relaxing/calming atmosphere, especially in the evenings. “A place or state of great beauty or delight” is the definition of Paradise. After considering what I see from the back of my house, I believe I witness “Paradise” every day. The Beach By Nancy Davy A cacophony of sunlit sounds live at the beach. I crest the tufted knoll and am assailed with smell of salt spray. Sandals slip off; toes slip into sun-warmed sand as balmy breezes lift my cares and carry them away. Waves roll in from the horizon under summer’s cloudless sky. Here is life, and it is everywhere, and in all sizes. Children splash as waves rush and retreat. Shells sparkle in the shifting sand. Egrets stalk stiff-legged, poking beaks into the sand, then cock their heads and chortle as they find a tasty morsel. Gulls screech and squabble, undaunted by my presence. A sand crab scurries for cover. Pelicans ride the breeze majestically, then wheel and dive. Brightly covered canvas chairs march in even rows along the private hotel beachfronts; sun worshippers recline – tinkling laughter, conversation permeates my outer conscience. I daydream. I walk slowly, watching as my footprints fill with water, then are whisked away by the next tide’s pull. How pleasurable, this exercise of just observing nature. It draws me to a yearning to never leave this undemanding place, so full of life and yet so far removed from it. Priorities are re-discovered here.

I know it seems like a long way away but the next issue will be the June-July issue and we will have to final up all the details of what we will be having this year. As of now it all looks very uncertain, so we can just guess. I’d say the only thing we can count on would be a parade and that would be only if the weather cooperates with us. So this is just a heads up to think about how you can decorate your carts, because no matter what our health concerns are, we know we can be thankful for our freedom and we will still want to thank our veterans and God for giving us the gift of living in this great land! So, until next month, give some thought as to what you can do to be creative with your cart or bike. Stay 6 feet away… as we will with the carts, and stay safe everyone

How lucky could we get in finding Del Tura Golf and Country Club! One of the first questions we ask our new members of the community is...Where are you from? What did you do in your other life? What do you like to do for entertainment? A group of us on the Welcome Committee got together and wondered how we could get to know all these new people moving into Del Tura. The idea came to me that we could have a giant block party! Using the “KISS” theory - (Keep It Simple). Small groups such as 10 to 15 houses each side and across the street… bring a small snack to share… BYOB, perhaps a chair and hold it on the driveway! WOW! Get to know your close neighbors. We recruited Block Captains so people would have someone to report to with a “yes” or “no”. The original idea was small groups but some combined and we all had a ball! It was great! Now, many, many people have thanked us for getting them to meet and greet new and old neighbors, especially the new residents. This was the plan! With this virus going around, I hope you are keeping track of our new and old friends and

are making sure they have the food and meds they need. If you know someone living alone, set up some sort of signal like, open the garage door or raise a blind, or use the red/green card in your window so neighbors know all is well. Help is all around!!! No one needs to be a permanent block captain. Just step up and take turns to entertain 2-3 hours once a year in your driveway… Volunteer! In these troubling times, we need each other more than ever. Check on your neighbors, bake cookies, offer to shop. Remember our glass is half full, not half empty! We have a lot of wonderful people to get to know and to make our lives richer. I have lived here for 32 years and have seen many changes, and this is truly paradise. Become a part of it and enjoy getting to know your neighbors!

Del Tura Veteran Steve Banko Beats All Odds A 19th century Englishman first penned the notion that “the pen is mightier than the sword” but a Del Tura resident has spent much of his adult life proving the accuracy of that notion. Steve and Shirley Banko came to Del Tura from Buffalo NY and now spends five months a year in our little slice of paradise. But the road Steve traveled to get here would befuddle the techies at Google Maps. He earned a basketball scholarship to college after high school but after three failed attempts at three different schools, he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. “That was the turning point in my life,” he notes. “Failure was becoming far too familiar to me and I was sent to a job in a place where failure was not an option.” For the next sixteen months, Steve served in the infantry in the thick of Vietnam combat, first with the 1st Infantry Division during the Tet Offensive and later with the 7th Cavalry, which was Gen. Custer’s old unit at the Little Big Horn.

“There must be some curse attached to that unit,” Steve noted. “The same thing that happened to Custer happened to us.” On December 3, 1968, Banko’s rifle company was wiped out in five-hour battle fought against a North Vietnamese Army regiment that outnumbered the GIs better than 4 to 1. Steve was shot twice that day and lost a kneecap while being wounded by shrapnel three other times. He was sent back to the States where he rehabbed the knee so well, he went back to Vietnam for another tour. He did take time out to marry Shirley on September 20 before landing back in Vietnam on October 1. “We had a short, sweet, and strange honeymoon” he said. “During my first tour, I didn’t even have a girlfriend. Now, I had a wife and I might not live long enough to even see her again.” As a civilian, Banko used his writing skills for forge careers in politics and government. He was a speechwriter in the New York State Assembly, chief of staff to a NY State Senator, and Director of Communications for the Mayor

of Buffalo. But no matter where his professional vocation took him, Steve never abandoned his avocation as an advocate for Vietnam veterans. He was a principal fund raiser for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Buffalo waterfront, a monument dedication by one of Steve’s poems. More than three decades later, the same poem was used to dedicate a memorial in Tupelo MS. As a result of his support for his fellow veterans, Steve has spoken to audiences across the country. A speech about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) delivered in Utica NY earned the Grand Prize as Speech of the Year in judging by the Cicero Foundation. Then-Vice President Joe Biden quoted from one of Steve’s speech in his address at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. He added to those accomplishments last year when his essay “Love Must Survive War” earned the Gold Medal for first place in the national judging for the Veterans Administration Festival of the Arts. Shirley & Steve Banko earning first place in the local judging at Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg and are now in contention for national honors again. Steve retired in 2010 as the Field Office Director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Shirley retired in 2006 after more than three decades of teaching in the Buffalo public schools. The couple has two adult children and four grandchildren. “Spending winters here in paradise was the second-best decision I ever made,” he said. “Marrying Shirley was the best.”

Meet Your Neighbors – Steve and Nancy Davy By Pam Price Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Steve and Nancy Davy as we remained socially distanced in our golf carts. They are the first couple to share a bit about themselves from our community for this returning column, Meet Your Neighbors. Steve and Nancy moved to Del Tura from Elmira, New York back in 2009, after vacationing in the area since the 1980’s. They fell in love with Del Tura the first time they arrived and met Lynne Miller. Three years later, they bought and moved in! Eleven years later, even during a pandemic where everything is shut down, they still love it here! Nancy and Steve were married in 1972, after being introduced by Nancy’s brother. Steve went to work as a grocery bagger and within six months was as Assistant manager in the grocery business, claiming the youngest person to hold that position at that time. Nancy worked varying jobs while raising their children, and ultimately ended up at the Pleasant Valley Wine company, from which she retired last year. Steve stayed in the grocery business initially, when they purchased a grocery business, named “The American Dream” which they operated through 1997, while purchasing and starting a Bar and Restaurant in 1995. Steve and Nancy both mentioned the best part of their business’ were their customers. Nancy and Steve are both active in the Del Tura community. Both are avid golfers and enjoy the people that live here. There was a common theme of their enjoyment and appreciation of people around them. They shared the favorite part of their business was the people and the favorite part of Del Tura is the people. Nancy has had a passion for writing for much of her life. She has brought this passion to Del Tura, via the recently formed Del Tura Creative Writer’s Group. She is well-qualified to lead this group and share the many benefits of putting pen to paper, as she recently published two books. One was written after the loss of her Mother and is titled: Tears from my Pen. She shared this book provided much needed grief therapy to get her through a very sad time in life. Prior to writing that collection of poems, she started writing a Romance novel, which she also just finished this past year. That book, How Far We Have Come, was also recently published. Both are e-books, available at Amazon, Kindle, and other online bookstores. Congratulations on your success, and how cool is it that we now have another published author here at Del Tura! The Davys are looking forward to the return of normalcy, especially golf here at Del Tura. Until then, they, like most of us are making the best of the situation. In fact, since our sit-down, Nancy shared that she has finished the sequel to How Far We Have Come and expects to have that published shortly. SPORTS & EXERCISE Friday Shuffleboard League ​ y Jack Blevons B Well, this is going to be a different letter, being as I am writing this on March 27th which normally would be early but as we all know, everything in our community here is either shut down or locked up. Our last day of shuffleboard ended a few weeks early & we all know why so won’t go into a whole lot of detail there. We were fortunate to get our last regular season games in on March 13th. The following Friday was supposed to have been the 8-Team Tournament & today, the 27 was supposed to have been our 16th Annual Bust-Up Party but that as well as the Tournament had to be cancelled because of rules laid down by Home-Town management which we all abide by. What I can tell you in this letter are the winners of the trophies in our league. The A-Flight 1st place trophies were won by Glenn & Mary Kay Tointon with a 41/10 record. Marlene Eck & Dave Lessard were in 2nd place at 40/11 & 3rd place was won by Marcella Carothers & Curt King at 38/13. In the B-FLight the 1st place trophies were won by Mary Pimental & Kathy Boesel, for the 2nd year in a row with a 26/25 record. The 2nd place winners were Cam Smith & Ray David at 23/28 & they were followed by Ted & Barb Luke in 3rd place at 22/29. Again, I am sorry our season had to end so abruptly like it did but that was totally out of my control. So, saying that, I hope everyone is staying safe & staying well & look forward to starting another season come November.

Del Tura Shuffleboard Grows To Triple Digits By Glenn Tointon Let me first tell you about our physical improvements to our shuffleboard area. All our courts have been re-surfaced with embedded beads, so they are always fast. Some of the best in Lee county! The scoreboards have been replaced and, as you may know, the benches were replaced a couple of years ago. And now, for the biggest improvement, the numbers actively participating in shuffleboard: Thanks to Bob and Darlene Brinker we have a fun league on Monday nights that starts at 6:30pm. Usually we have 40-50 players, some with no experience to some with years of experience. It’s all for fun. On Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 (earlier in the summer) Fred and Carolyn Brueggerman organize a smaller group, usually 20-30 players, for fun play. On Tuesday evening another group gathers for fun play. This group is organized by Steve Pina.

For all three of these times all are welcome and no experience is necessary. On Wednesday is our traveling league made up of 12-15 of our better more competitive players. This team, captained by Glenn Tointon, plays other communities in our close area. Although it’s competitive and records are kept, it is still a fun league. We really enjoy seeing other parks and meeting new people. Anyone can join this league. We teach you strategy and defense. Glenn is also President of this Lee County League. On Fridays at 12:30 Jack Blevons has an in-house league of about 40 players who compete throughout the winter (Oct. to March). Three games each week are played with an eight-team tourney finishing the season. Lots of fun with some competitiveness. This too is open to all. SPORTS & EXERCISE 18 Hole Women’s Golf Association TEE OFF TIME By Margie Blackwell Even though our ladies have been unable to golf or have any league events, we have stayed in touch through texts, telephone calls and Facebook. And sometimes a wave, a smile or a “good morning” as we walk or bike around Del Tura. There is also some good news from our association! Hometown America has donated an additional memorial bench to the 18-holers! Thank you for your help, Fred. And we recently received two cash donations to help with the expansion and upkeep of the space: • The family of Louise Bowers, a long-time golfer, 18-holer and our dear friend, provided a generous cash donation. Thank you to Louise’s children and sisters for their generosity.

• Bob Sheffield made a contribution in memory of his wife, Mary, who was a part of our league for many, many years. We really appreciate his help. The benches are located on the golf course at 1 West. Additional plans include adding more pavers and plants to spruce up the area; and Bertie Dugo continues to weed, water and maintain the beautiful memorial area dedicated to those loved ones we have lost.

The 5 members of the team are Marcel Bedard, Al Young, Bill Michael, Vito Sinicropi and Harry Christopher, Captain. Beginning with the Fall 2020 season, Del Tura will have a second team in the league led by Ernie Page. Monday Afternoon 8-Ball - Each Monday at 1:00 PM beginning in November, we hold a complete tournament. The champion for the season that ended in March 2020 was Vito Sinicropi.

SoftBall News at Del Tura Del Tura SoftBall Season Recap By Art Keen Hello again sports fans and welcome to the season recap of the Del Tura Softball season. As you may recall, when we last left our valiant leather slingers the season was well underway and both our teams, the beloved Amigos and the upstart Diablos were in the thick of an outstanding season. Unfortunately, the softball gods were not friendly with our teams this season and when the last game was played on Monday March 9th the Amigos ended up in second place in the A division and the Diablos ended up third in division B. Overall an impressive showing for both teams. As with most things, the playoffs for the Mark and Mary Ford league were eradicated by the Covid-19 situation and so playoff winners could not be crowned. All in all, our AMAZING fan support and our player’s enthusiasm made both of our teams winners in this reporters eyes. On a happier note, our annual fan appreciation celebration was held on Saturday Feb 29th and

the event was a spectacular success. As the only annual fundraiser for Del Tura softball the importance of this soiree cannot be understated. Our fans and players paid homage to each other with an amazing turnout and some incredible food! We were even entertained by a rousing rendition of Abbot and Costello’s classic “Who’s on First?” performed by Dick and Denise Rose. (By the way, both husband and wife played this season, one on one team, and one on the other). As usual, the Del Tura Community’s commitment to their softball teams is unequaled and we cannot say enough thanks to our loyal supporters. A special heartfelt thanks must go out to Ken and Cindy Baron and Bernie and Carolyn Forsey for their generous donation to Del Tura Softball. This is the third donation this talented group has made to our organization and it will be put to good use as we continue fielding two teams. Thank you to all who attended the Disco Dance and all their generosity which subsidized this thoughtful donation.

SEASON ENDS FOR DEL TURA TRAVELING SHUFFLEBOARD TEAM As I mentioned earlier this was a rebuilding year for Del Tura. With that said, I couldn’t be prouder of this group! They always worked hard to improve their skills. We took fourth place with 141 points behind Lake Arrowhead, Laurel Estates, and Windmill Village.

Like so many leagues and clubs, our bowling team had its season end with three weeks remaining because of the Coronavirus. Also cancelled was our banquet which was to be held at Phils 41 in Punta Gorda. With an increase in size to twelve teams, we found the competition very strong. Our individual averages ranges from 181 for the highest to 89 at the low end. Even though the averages varied so much, we never stopped enjoying one of the most fun leagues we have been a part of over the last ten years. Not only did we fill the twelve teams made up of four players each, but we also had twenty-two substitutes ready to fill in when needed. Our shortened season was finally won by 10 PINS, made up of Janet Ragone, Sue Brown, Marianela Tamayo, and Dave Csuy. Dave was one lucky man. Not only did he take first, but he was surrounded by three wonderful and beautiful teammates! Here are just a few statistics I want to pass on to our readers:

9-Hole Women’s Golf Assoc. (DTNHWGA) By Sandy Gove We hope this article finds each of you and yours, wherever you are, doing well and coping as best as you can with the current challenge that we all share. All spring events including the President’s Cup were cancelled along with our MemberGuest event that may be held at a later date. Our planned April business meeting could not be held. As there was only one candidate received for each position, according to our bylaws the following officers were elected. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team going forward: President: Justine Fitzgibbons Vice President: Debby Taylor Treasurer: Lucy Schaefer Secretary: Dorothy Cook Dues of $25.00 are due by July 1. Checks should be made payable to DTNHWGA and can either be sent to Lucy Schaefer, 266 Las Palmas Blvd., North Ft. Myers, FL 33903, or may be left at her home in the basket provided.

The golf course is looking wonderful with the maintenance crew working diligently each day, and despite our current shortfall of rain. The alligators, however, are feeling a bit neglected with no golfers to ogle them or interrupt their sunbaths with a stray golf ball or two. The ducks love the lush fairways and are even more relaxed than usual, waddling along without a care about golfers getting in their way. Water hazards are now free of golf balls as the diver just filled his truck completely with 14 bags of pond balls--I’m sure I contributed one bag alone, all initialed or stamped with a cute dragonfly! Oh well. With the community being especially quiet right now, it is pleasant to walk, or see walkers and bicyclists (with required spacing between them) using the cart paths. Something is definitely missing however-YOU! We look forward to seeing each of you back out on the course, teeing them high and letting them fly, as soon as possible. Take care.

Del Tura Motorcycle Club By Sheila Doublé DEL TURA FAMILY If you ever wonder “why Del Tura”? Regardless of who you are “we’re all family” and are there for each other. Our community is so blessed to have such an amazing variety (all with our own opinions – haha) with-in the walls of Del Tura. In the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis Del Turians posted a $100 donation on the Del Tura Facebook page with-in a few hours it turned into over $1100 that was matched and donated to a few in need. The following week Del Turians organized a food/supply donation and had an amazing turn out for a Del Tura food drive (all of which was delivered with-in Del Tura). Thank you to the many wonderful people that took the time and love to donate for those that needed help. We’re grateful to be a part of such a wonderful community and thank you to Fred for your help as well. We all look forward to when our community is back open and we can start a new daily routine. When we can: We invite all riders for our Sunday Breakfast rides on the 1st and 3rd

The Wild One may be the first movie featuring a Harley. While 1969’s Easy Rider is viewed as the quintessential Harley-Davidson motorcycle movie and could be the first movie where its bikes took center stage, it was the 1953 classic The Wild One with Marlon Brando that gave Harley its first featured big-screen performance. Of course, Brando wasn’t riding a Harley, but rather a Triumph Thunderbird 6T. However, Brando’s nemesis, Chino, of the rival Beetles motorcycle gang (played by Lee Marvin), straddled a 1950 Harley-Davidson Hydra Glide. Additional fun fact: The Beetles motorcycle gang is said to have helped inspire a rock band to later name itself something very similar

Lock Down Conversation By Kathy Rupert Just be careful because people are going crazy from being in lock down! Actually, I’ve just been talking about this with the microwave and toaster while drinking coffee and we all agreed that things are getting bad. I didn’t mention anything to the washing machine as she puts a different spin on everything. Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end the iron straightened

me out as she said everything will be fine, no situation is too pressing. The vacuum was very unsympathetic... told me to just suck it up, but the fan was more optimistic and hoped it would all soon blow over! The toilet looked a bit flushed when I asked its opinion and didn’t say anything, but the doorknob told me to get a grip. The front door said I was unhinged and so the curtains told me to... yes, you guessed it... pull myself together!

Model Native Garden Update By Rosemary Eiden Whatever happened to that model native garden for Del Tura? I think many of us are still reeling from the aftershocks of Covid-19. Many of us have had to readjust our lives. Most grants stipulate that the garden must be on public land. So, our first application for a native plant grant was denied. That information came through around March 9th. So, I applied for a second grant. I recently found out I have been considered. Again, the requirement for the garden on public land. I am hoping that by explaining that visitors need a

pass and having a resident like myself lead them through the garden that they might consider us grantable. That way the ‘public’ could see the garden. Many 55 plus communities like Del Tura are gated so unless the rules can be bent a bit we would be out of the running in getting a grant. So, the garden joins the list of the many items that are already on the Del Tura capital list. We would need $3000 for plant material and about $500 for an irrigation system to get started. I am still optimistic that this garden will eventually happen. I am willing to wait, are you?

Then And Now By Bette Ewing Cheney In 1918, a flu epidemic known as the Spanish Influenza spread across this country. It was the most severe pandemic in recorded history. It spread worldwide from 1918 to 1919 as about 500 million people, or one third of the world’s population became infected. 675,000 people died in the US and fifty million deaths were credited to this pandemic worldwide. That was more than the total deaths from WW I. The mortality rate was highest in people younger than 5 yrs. and those 20 to 40 yrs. old. The first US recorded incident of the Spanish Flu was on an army base with soldiers who had just returned from the war in Europe. There was no cure. Schools and businesses were closed, and the US economy came to a standstill. What was done to fight the epidemic in the US? You guessed it, social quarantining (today social distancing). Public gatherings were banned. Citizens in San Francisco were arrested if they were caught in public without a mask, fined $5.00 and charged with disturbing the peace. Cities and states that didn’t enforce this kind of policy suffered with the highest sick and mortality rates. Philadelphia held a Liberty Loan parade in October 1918 which was attended by tens of thousands of Philadelphians. In just 10 days, 1,000 Philadelphians were dead and 200,000 sick. Social quarantining was the only defense. Sound familiar? What did citizens do during their isolation? They read, played cards, and played puzzles. Sound familiar? By the summer of 1919 the Spanish Flu epidemic in the US had come to an end. Our current COVID-19 epidemic will come to an end too. America came back strong in 1919, and we will do the same from this pandemic. Until then, Delturians, take care and stay well.
