THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU Anyone that has lived in Del Tura is aware of the awesome community of volunteers that keep this place running. As Editor of the Tower, I know it takes a small army of volunteers to get this paper out and delivered 10 times a year. Although our delivery team hasn’t had to deliver through ice and snow, like the Post Office,
they have continued to deliver throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Kudos to the entire team for doing this in a smart and safe manner, while still getting the paper to our members. There are many other volunteer groups in Del Tura that have continued to operate during the “shutdown” and

Welcome Committee News By Gail Hodge Calling all volunteers! Are you looking to meet new friends, connect with current friends? Do you enjoy being part of something special by helping new neighbors feel welcome? If you answer yes to these, the Welcome Committee is looking for you. Whether you have been a past member, an active member or new member, the Welcome Committee wants to hear from you. We want to hear your ideas of how we can continue current activities and introduce new activities. If you are interested, please give me a call 585-315-1628. Currently our volunteers have been busy doing porch visits to deliver a welcome bag. Since we are still social
distancing and are not doing home visits, our visits are on the porch. Del Tura has had 48 new home purchases since January 2020. Some of those were residents moving to a new home, but most were new residents to Del Tura. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to them. If you are new to Del Tura and haven’t received a welcome bag with all the info on what is happening here in Del Tura, please let us know and we will be happy to see to it that you get one.

President’s Korner… By David Klein Well, time marches on and the restrictions at Del Tura appear to be lifting. That tends to break the boredom associated with being semiquarantined. Our electronic billboard is running and improved. It will be down on occasion for maintenance and upgrades. The sign is 7 years old and some of the light panels need to be replaced. So, please bear with us. We will continue to upgrade and provide community information and uplifting messages on it. An email system is being installed and all of you with email capability will be receiving a request for your permission to send you emails on the HOA’s activities. This will be strictly voluntary; emails will remain confidential, please respond to upcoming request to participate. The existing methods of communication will remain in place for those of you who do not have email. We are looking for volunteers who want to be webmasters of the new website we are evaluating. This is a new endeavor by the Board to upgrade and improve website communication. Our old one is dated and does not provide the options we desire—especially security.
We hope to have a regular member meeting in September if the pandemic resides. The virtual meetings are difficult to manage and limit participation of the audience. But they are better than nothing. Finally, please follow the rules associated with the lifting of restrictions by Home Town America. The restrictions are for your own wellbeing. Anyway, enjoy your summer, and please keep a watch on your neighbors who might need assistance and stay well.

DEL TURA HOA COMMUNICATION CHANNEL The Del Tura HOA board has created another channel of communication – a voluntary email system. The email system will be in addition to the current communication channels. Details of information that will be sent include the following: 1. Meeting notices. Agendas, minutes and other important announcements. 2. There will be very limited access to the email list for privacy purposes. 3. There will be facts only. No rumors or half-truths. 4. This will not be a facebook setting where people rant and rave. 5. If the info is not verified, it will not be sent. 6. You can opt out at anytime, simply be sending an email to the site. 7. The HTA bulletin board, the Tower and the website will continue to carry news. After concurring with our committee, attending showcases, conversing with Delturians, and getting contracts approved and signed by our HOA Board and our agents, we have finalized our schedule. One Tank Trips By Bette Ewing Cheney Let’s go to Ava Maria. This is a community that has become a big kind of small town. The Catholic Cathedral is the focal point located in the center of town. Take a stroll through this impressive sanctuary. It is absolutely breath taking. The town consists of a beautiful town square surrounded by beautifully designed twostory town buildings, second
story luxury condos over stores on the square, family homes in separated gated communities and numerous first class recreational facilities. Ava Maria is home to their own International College, Christian Schools, Doctors’ offices, restaurants, medical center, grocery stores, pizza parlor, clothing boutiques, specialty stores, travel agency and community realty sales center. Residents never have
to leave town, although Naples is nearby and Ft. Lauderdale is only an hour away. Domino’s Pizza founder, Tom Monaghan, a devout Catholic, was instrumental in developing Ava Maria in 2006. The town and community have grown tremendously since then. It’s worth the trip. Have lunch at one of the restaurants and enjoy the afternoon sitting on the square viewing this beautiful town.

If Dogs Could Talk My mom just told me that the park will be opening Monday, May 4th. I must call all my friends to let them know. This is what I plan to say: Maizie, did you hear the park is opening? Grab your master and meet me there. I can’t wait for you to run in the tunnel so I can jump on you. Do you remember how to hold the ball in your mouth so I can take it from you when we catch you? When I get it, you’ll have a hard time catching me. My mom keeps telling me I have a lot of pent up energy, whatever that means. Rico, the park is opening. You won’t have to hold your poop for so long anymore. You’ll be able to use your favorite corner of the park. Your dad and mom will be so proud of you. Oliver, grab your ball, jump in the car, and meet us at the dog park. Your dad will be so happy to see all his friends again. He’ll probably forget to throw your ball. Don’t worry! If you bring it to my mom, she’ll throw it for you. It will be fun stealing his ball again. Josie can’t wait to pig pile. Phoebe can’t wait to steal all our balls when we get distracted and hoard them. Katie can wrestle again. I wonder if Mylie will remember us. She’s pretty old, you know, but she’s still cute. KiKo can spring around like a rabbit. Lexi can show us how to be dignified. I’ve probably forgotten some of us, it’s been so long, but I can’t wait to see them either, whoever they are. I think I will just go outside and do some howling. It will be
quicker. My paws and tongue are getting tired writing this. Just hope my mom’s golf cart still works after so long. I can’t wait to get there so I can jump and run after all those little dogs. I’ll bet they’ll be running pretty fast along the fence. They’ve probably been asleep all day, just like us. What else has there been to do but watch our people watch TV? See you Monday! Why Should You See A Financial Advisor?
The social distancing and stay-at-home orders necessitated by the coronavirus have led many of us to feel isolated. Still, we’ve fought back through social media, “virtual” gatherings and walks in the neighborhood, where we could greet friends and neighbors (from 6 feet away). But when you’re dealing with the financial effects of the virus and you’re investing alone, you could encounter some problems that may prove costly. Of course, with so much investment-related information available online, on television and in any number of periodicals, it’s not surprising that some people feel they can invest without any assistance. Don’t Take Away Our Hugs! During this time of quarantine, we have had many hours /days/months to think about how different life will be following this Pandemic. Maybe some things will be for the better but we have to agree, life will certainly not be the same as it was before Covid-19! It’s true, social distancing has been a safe answer for us, and thankfully due to the advances in technology we have been able to communicate with our loved ones and dear friends in a variety of ways. Computer screens and cell phones are appreciated but, they’ll never take the place of that much needed HUG! Everyone needs a hug now and then –some more than
others, and for many different reasons. I am a firm believer of the “hug theory”…well some of you reading this already know that. I was brought up with the idea hugs are more powerful than words and it will be difficult for many of us to not be able to embrace someone that needs a reassuring hug. You know sometimes people don’t say, “Hey, come hug me”, but you know that they need one. We all need them even when we try to convince ourselves of the idea that it’s not necessary. Are we really being truthful with ourselves? Many of us are finding it very hard right now thinking about our families and how they are coping with a time in their lives that should be filled with happiness and lots & lots of hugs! Our grandchildren, or other dear family members after many years of hard work,
are not being able to experience all the pomp and circumstance of their high school and college graduations. Nor will they experience the wonderful, well –deserved, exciting pregraduating festivities they should be celebrating at this time of their lives. `I just want to take them in my arms and give them a hug that sends a soothing, hopeful message. It just doesn’t have the same effect over the phone. We need to reassure them that it will get better! `I think I just read something that said, “I wish I could make it a better world for my grandchildren…” I’m sure all of us wish this with all our hearts! Hugs are important to us for many reasons. The positive benefits of hugging have been proven both physically and mentally. They make us happy as well as healthy. There

Research shows that when we hug our bodies we release Oxytocin, also known as the “love drug.” `Some of the positive results mentioned stated that hugs lead to a calmer nervous system which helps to lower blood pressure. In addition, many studies show that hugs with the people and pets in our lives can help with depression, reduce pain, and cause less sleepless nights. There are so many benefits of a hug… so many great vibes… From our very first hug our message was… you are loved… it says I care… you belong… you are special… who can deny that hugs are a real confidence booster. What happens to these benefits if we can no longer physically hug? Let’s face it we are a society that needs to be connected to others socially
and mentally. If we don’t keep ourselves occupied we become anxious and allow ourselves to become depressed. What can we do for ourselves to give us the healthy benefits of a hug without physical contact? Do we close our eyes and visually try to feel the benefits of the hug? It’s worth a try –we can’t embrace but we are definitely capable of creating the mental images needed to feel the benefits. Everyone will find their own way of coping. The Huggers of the world, that would include me, will learn to express their happiness and fondness for others through the use of mental images, or other gestures to communicate their feelings. For now though, think about giving yourself some self love and give yourself a welldeserved hug every day. It will take practice but we can do it!

To serve others and to do good.” ~ Aristotle The above is one of the most ancient quotes about volunteering offers proof that giving back to the community is hardly a new concept. The greatest thing about volunteering may be the benefit it offers to the individual recipient, their communities and to the volunteers themselves. One of the rewarding things about being a FISH volunteer is the happiness it gives to the one doing the volunteering. Until you have experienced the joy of giving of your time to
someone else, you have missed a wonderful feeling. During this time if the only volunteering you can do is to call a few friends (especially those who live alone) and just say “hello” and “how are you?” I am sure the person on the other end of that call will be thrilled to hear from you. Although we have a number of volunteers in this community please consider joining FISH when you are able. We drive residents to their appointments, give them a dinner when they return home from a hospital stay, send cards when someone is ill or just needs cheering up, we offer fruit platters to memorials and we have all sorts of medical equipment that FISH lends at no charge to any residents. We offer our residents these services all year long. Join us!

Household Help Hints For Everyone • Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat/air register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get into narrow openings. • Measuring Cups: Before you pour sticky substance into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the water but don’t dry the cup. Add your ingredient (like peanut butter) and watch how easily it comes right out! • Foggy Windshield: Buy a chalk eraser and keep it in the glove compartment of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser.....works better than a cloth! • Reopening Envelope: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place the envelope in the freezer for an hour or two....it will unseal easily. • Goodby Fruit Flies: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2 Apple Cider Vinegar, and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well. The History Of Flag Day Source: https://www.chamberofcommerce.org/ usflag/history/flagday.html The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’. On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day. Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as ‘Flag Day’, and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag. Two weeks later on May 8th, the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons
of the Revolution unanimously endorsed the action of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames. As a result of the resolution, Dr. Edward Brooks, then Superintendent of Public Schools of Philadelphia, directed that Flag Day exercises be held on June 14, 1893 in Independence Square. School children were assembled, each carrying a small Flag, and patriotic songs were sung and addresses delivered. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public-school children’s celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating. Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.” Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Let’s Take a Ride By Doug & Bette Cheney After the first eight days of homebound quarantining, as per Florida guidelines, Doug and I decided we needed a change of scenery. Where could we go? What could we do? It was time for a motorcycle ride! Traffic was light and we could adhere to social distancing with a twist of the throttle. Ride #1: We headed for Labelle along North River Rd. (hwy 78) through Alva, crossed the Ft. Denaud bridge, and rode along the river on Ft. Denaud Road. The weather was beautiful and the wind in our hair was exhilarating. Along the way we saw breathtaking bougainvillea hanging in bright arrays of brilliant purple, yellow, pink, red and orange colors. Arriving in Labelle, we stopped at the Burger King drive-thru, ordered lunch, and carefully packed it on the Harley to ride over and eat at the river front park near the bridge. We sat by the river at a shaded picnic table, enjoying a cool breeze, watching the boats go by, then rode home happy with our little adventure. Ride #2: After feeling confined again several days later, it was time to head out on the touring model Ultra Classic Harley for a
ride to Arcadia. Though stores were closed, we explored the historic district with locals sitting at sidewalk tables eating takeout from the small delis. Many of those folks waved and said hello as we rode along main street east towards the fast food chains on Hwy. 70. We drove up to the drive-in at Kentucky Fried Chicken, ordered a bucket, came back into town, and ate in a small park under the trees near the historic train station. Ride #3, 4 & 5: We visited the town of Ave Maria, rode northeast to Solomon’s Castle (via little known twisty-turny picturesque back roads), then up to Punta Gorda’s Ponce De Leon waterfront park, and homemade ice cream (back in town) at the Brown Cow. Our latest trip, ride #6, was on the day after Ft. Myers Beach reopened. We headed out to explore Bowditch Point Park and rode down the beach road towards Lover’s Key to walk on the sand. After finding a little take out bar/restaurant in a strip mall along the way, we ate lunch on the beach listening to the waves rolling in along the sparkling white sand. Home quarantining is necessary and the right thing to do, but it is sure nice to get out for a change of scenery.

Meet Your Neighbors – Glenn and Diana Camp By Pam Price I had the opportunity to interview Glenn and Diana this past month. What an interesting life story they have shared. Diana was born in Galesburg, IL, the home of Carl Sandburg, and Glenn came from Winterset County, IA, the home of John Wayne as well as The Bridges of Madison County. They have been married for more than 50 years. After college, both went into education. Diana met Glenn at the Mount Carroll School District when she was teaching Latin and French at the middle school attached to the high school where Glenn was the Principal. They raised two sons, and now also enjoy three grandchildren! I think the Camps would agree with me, when I say they have a “Famous People or Celebrity” hobby that has brought much joy to their lives. They enjoy meeting people and learning as much as they can about everyone, they encounter. They have been to more than 1,000 concerts, spanning over 150 operas and 35 James Taylor concerts. They have eclectic tastes, to say the least. At most of these concerts, Diana wiggles her way to the front of any crowd, thus they usually meet the artists, and often can have a conversation with the celebrity. They shared discussions with James Taylor, Carly Simon, and many politicians during our conversation. They also collect books signed by the authors. One of the stories shared was when they stood in line to get Jimmy Carter to sign his book. Glenn’s Mom was about to turn 100, and the goal was to get a personalized signature. As they were several people away from getting to the table for the signature, they were told that there would be no chance of a personalized signature. However, the former President overheard the conversation and proceeded to personalize the book for Glenn’s Mom. His Mom lived to be 106, so she had some time to enjoy that! Along with concerts and books, the Camps are what I would call political junkies. They recalled their very first votes; for Diana it was Charles Percy, a Republican, and for Glenn it was Harry Truman, a
hours early to get that needed spot to meet a celebrity and to be close enough to “wiggle” in and get to have a conversation. For the Camp’s it isn’t about just seeing these people, it’s about having the conversation and learning all about them, from the Celebrity’s own words. Diana and Glenn clearly love to interact with people. They were invited to Del Tura during a vacation more than ten years ago, and left the park that day as homeowners, largely due to the people! After being snowbirds for many years, they have recently made Florida their primary residence. They still travel to see family, friends, Celebrities, and to meet with her classmates when they have their monthly lunch reunion. Next time you see either Glenn or Diana, strike up a conversation – I guarantee it will be fascinating!
Glenn and Diana Camp Democrat. Diana recalled her parents taking her to see JFK, and she described it as magical being able to get so close to him, and she was hooked. Glenn was the youngest of 9, in a family that was always politically active too, thus it is also in his blood. The two of them have been proud members of the Democrat party most of their lives and were awarded the “Jane Thomas Volunteer of the Year Award” in 2009. They have participated in many political campaigns and shared that it is something everyone should consider doing, regardless of party affiliation (although they prefer their own :) ). The common requirements needed to meet as many Famous People as the Camps have done are time and patience. They shared it isn’t unusual to show up four

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are only going to have a parade this year…but that is a great tradition here at Del Tura and a lot of fun! We can keep a 6’ social distance as we tour around-down from the Clubhouse, left on Las Palmas to Via del Sol and take that all around till you are back taking a left on Las Palmas where you return to the Clubhouse. Our tradition has always been to honor our VETERANS with special carts for them at the beginning of the parade, but this year we will forgo that and instead we will be providing red signs for each cart (or car or bike or motorcycle) that is carrying a veteran. And of course, we will still have prizes for the best decorated cart (vehicle). 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. We will announce them on the Del Tura Residents Facebook page and on the HOA web page. Who knows what things will be like in July, but this is the decision as of this deadline so it’s the best we can do.
Please get together and join us. Let’s remember how lucky we are to live in this Land of Freedom and in this great place we call Paradise.

By Pam Price The past couple of months have been challenging, to say the least. It is at these times that we see many Del Tura residents step up and help one another. In the May Tower, we asked our readers to forward us any acts of kindness they observed, participated in, or received. We heard back from a handful of individuals, and this is what we learned.

There have been many residents sewing masks in Del Tura. Thank you to all that are helping in this effort. Here are just two of those contributing to this effort, that we are aware of at this time: Beth Wilkerson has been making masks and providing them to any residents who ask her for them. Thank you to Beth for her talent in making the masks, generosity in donating them, and for helping to keep us all safe, as masks let our residents move around to business’ and likely reduce the risk of residents bringing the virus back into DelTura! Diana Pina has also been making masks, donating them to healthcare workers, as well as others. This was critically important when the virus first hit and PPE was scarce, and continues to be important to facilities such as nursing homes, where supplies aren’t always ample for residents. Thank you Diana for your generosity. Diana also shared the importance of using the proper materials with others making masks, increasing the odds that the masks any of us made would be effective!
Food Drive
Many residents donated food, and some money to provide 22 homes inside of Del Tura with 3 bags of groceries. These residents were in need due to health, the inability to get to a store, and/ or finances. Ann & Ken Abramczyk, Dorathy & Garry Biddinger, Sheila & Tony Double and
Marianne & George O’Malley assembled the grocery bags and delivered them to the homes, maintaining social distancing. Thank you for coordinating this effort and taking care of our residents in need during this time. The following letter of gratitude was sent to me to share with all: Very early in our “stay at home time”, the doorbell rings and on my doorsteps stood several food filled bags. In the distance I saw two smiling faces, faces I do not know . I looked surprised, then I heard “I am George O’Malley” this is “ Del Tura, neighbors, helping neighbors”. And then they drove off with their golf-cart. I was very grateful for their kind thoughtfulness. A little later, again food bags stood before my door. And I heard Georg saying we like to give to nice people. I was very happy. This great food supply came just at the right time. Our friends and I had not yet figured out how to get food delivered from Publix. And some neighbors had just came back from a long stay in Thailand, to an empty refrigerator. We were all so grateful and blessed to know that in Del Tura life so very thoughtful and we have kind people, with a big heart. God bless them all.

SPORTS & EXERCISE 9-Hole Women’s Golf Assoc. (DTNHWGA) By Sandy Gove After what seemed like an eternity of golf courses without golfers, one day I looked out my window, and lo and behold, there they were! People with golf clubs, and everyone wore a childlike grin whether their golf balls went straight down the fairway or landed in the water: they were playing golf again! Some wise restrictions apply: one person per cart, social distancing, and... no flags or holes on the greens!? Was this a Superintendent’s Revenge? No. Replacing the traditional flags were “tuna cans” to aim for instead: tap the can and it was “in the cup.” Then, just as we got used to the rewarding sound of golf balls hitting the metal cans those were replaced by short, skinny metal rods, barely visible from the tee. The rods are different colors to show placement: a favorite is the disappearing black color. We’re told there soon will be flags at the top of the rods-our eyes look forward to that. (We know and appreciate the care being taken to keep players safe while we’re golfing.) Do we dare think what might be next? Golfers can handle anything. Though leagues are not back officially, with the cooperation and assistance of Ryan and the Pro Shop, Justine and Debby arranged for members to play Thursday mornings, observing safe distancing rules. It is wonderful to be out on the course connecting with friends again, and members are sincerely grateful to all for making this happen. One of our members, a dedicated nurse who works with Hospice patients locally, early on gave up golf and socializing with friends in order to protect those in her care. Wednesday, May 6 was her birthday: it was also, appropriately, the first day of Nurses’ Week. To celebrate her birthday, and to recognize and thank her for her service above self, along with nurses and first responders everywhere, Debby Taylor and Nancy Davy and other members got together with the help of her husband, Steve, to organize a parade of 16 golf carts. There were honking horns, balloons, posters, flowers, bubbles, Champagne and a cake! The neighbors seemed to enjoy it too!

Now with all the extra time I have been doing an excellent job of making compost. I continue to make layers of brown material (the neighbors bagged live oak leaves) and then a green layer (all the weeds I pick plus excess plant trimmings) in my compost bin. I lifted the compost container up and off the debris last week, gave it all a good toss, added some water and put it back in the composter. That will speed up the process a bit by introducing air. I have noticed this week that the debris inside the container has gone down by one third. My compost will be ready by the end of May. Then I will start another in October. My soil has improved already 50% in the areas I have added the compost. My perennial plants receive the bulk of the compost application. I use it as a top dressing. I usually have enough to spread on a 10x10 foot area. I make a mental note on which areas received it last year so that I don’t double up on them. When the rain comes it waters the compost down through the pine straw I use as a mulch. I like the pine straw for the slight acidity they release to the plants. The sand tends to be alkaline so the acid changes that PH to a neutral
level. Too much acid or too much alkalinity will turn the leaves on your plants yellow. Bromeliad’s like a special application of magnesium to flower. This is Epsom salts. Again, with your hand rake scratch the magnesium into the sandy soil around the plants and reapply the mulch. This time of the year before the rainy season comes is a good time to apply fertilizer to your plants. When we receive those downpours a lot of the nutrients will leach through and away in the sand. Time release fertilizers are easy to apply and last for 6 months. Flowering bushes like Alamonda and Hibiscus need the fertilizer to perform and look well. With your hand rake remove any mulch 1 foot away from the trunk, sprinkle the time release fertilizer there and rake the mulch back over. This is the area where the small feeder roots are. Palms need palm food to stay healthy and green. If your palms are showing yellow fronds it is time for food. Lawns are the hungriest for nutrients. Once lawns become thin then the weeds move in. I usually use my hose end sprayer with “Miracle Grow” to give the lawn a once a week spraying. Also, a once a month “Weed b’ Gone” spray to keep the weeds at bay. Of course, there are lawn care companies that come on a schedule to do that for you. If you want that perfectly green lawn then the labor and maintenance are worth it.

It’s a mess out there now. Hard to discern the degree of the threat. Hard to decide what to do. . For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900. On your 14th birthday, World War I starts and ends on your 18th birthday 22 million people perish in that war. Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until your 20th birthday. 50 million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million. On your 29th birthday, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, the World GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy. When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet. And don’t try to catch your breath. On your 41st birthday, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war. Smallpox was epidemic until you were in your 40’s, as it killed 300 million people during your lifetime.
At 50, the Korean War starts. 5 million perish. From your birth, until you are 55 you dealt with the fear of Polio epidemics each summer. You experience friends and family contracting polio and being paralyzed and/or die. At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesn’t end for 20 years. 4 million people perish in that conflict. During the Cold War, you lived each day with the fear of nuclear annihilation. On your 62nd birthday, you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, almost ended. When you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends. Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How did they endure all of that? When you were a kid in 1985 and didn’t think your 85 year old grandparent understood how hard school was. And how mean that kid in your class was. Yet they survived through everything listed above. Perspective is an amazing art. Refined and enlightening as time goes on. Let’s try and keep things in perspective. Your parents and/or grandparents were called to endure all of the above – you are called to stay home and sit on your couch.

Del Tura Motorcycle Club By Sheila Doublé DEL TURA FAMILY Needing a break from “life as we currently know it” we decided to get away for a day trip and rode up to Fisherman’s Village in Punta Gorda. It was a very beautiful and quiet ride, and was quite serene seeing all the shops closed with the docks full and boat tours (with less than 10ppl) going out sightseeing and fishing. It was nice to actually take the time to look around with very few others there. Riding is to me the most relaxing, quiet, feel the wind and just enjoy the moment. We will all come together again soon to ride for breakfast, lunch or some charity events and relax and enjoy or loves and life… See everyone soon. When we can: We invite all riders for our Sunday Breakfast rides on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month (weather permitting) meet at 8am at the clubhouse parking lot.

15 Things You Didn’t Know about Father’s Day It took a long time to get Dad’s special day recognized Honoring thy father is a concept that dates back to the very roots of human civilization. But the day meant to really make your dad feel special is far, far newer than that — at least in the U.S. And while Mother’s Day was established officially in 1914 (and widely celebrated even before that date), Father’s Day was not met with the same vigor and enthusiasm. While many people may think that this official holiday was created in reaction to Mother’s Day, this sentimental holiday has a far more interesting history and even more fun facts. The First Father’s Day On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church hosted the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers. During a Sunday sermon, 362 men who had died in explosions in December at the
Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah were honored in a one-time commemoration. One year later, Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to create a “Mother’s Day” for fathers. She had success when Washington state held the first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Third Sunday in June The road to declaring a nationallyhonored Father’s Day was a long one, spanning over 60 years. President Calvin Coolidge supported the holiday but did not make a proclamation. President Woodrow Wilson spoke at a Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, but Congress resisted making the holiday official out of fear it would become commercialized. Finally, President Lyndon B. Johnson was the one who declared the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, though it was not yet made a permanent national holiday. Nixon Officially Honors Dads Finally, it was President Nixon who officially declared it a holiday
in 1972. Father’s Day is much newer than Mother’s Day, which has been celebrated since the 1860s and was made official in 1914 The First Father’s Day Card Father’s Day cards go farther back than Hallmark. One of the earliest dates back roughly 4,000 years. Elmesu, a Babylonian youngster, carved a card
out of clay to “wish his father good health and long life.” Celebrating dads on the third Sunday in June may have originated in the United States, but Father’s Day is far from an American-exclusive holiday. Over 40 countries around the world have a special day to honor dads.
