Appreciation Weekend A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated and worked hard to make the weekend a big success. The volunteers donated their time and energy to run the games and serve the luncheon. The office made sure the Fire Department and the Drum Corps were available. The clubs put on their thinking caps and came up with interesting and amusing interpretations for the “Countries of the World” theme. Uncle Sam, the Pope, and a strange Chinese gentleman ensured good weather for one of the best parades ever. The Appeciation Committee would like to invite you to share your ideas, comments, suggestions or changes for next year’s weekend. Comments: positive, negative or neutral are appreciated. FROM THE PRESIDENT By the time you receive this, the “crazy, busy” month of March will be over, or close to it. It started with the Appreciation Weekend parade, which was outstanding this year. All the state clubs participated and worked very hard on their creative entries with the theme, “Countries of the World”. The pipe & drum band was excellent and added to the theme as well. All those who marched or rode in golf carts got in the spirit and had a great time. Those who watched were treated to a trip around the world. George and I had a great time leading this wonderful and diverse parade as the grand marshals. On that note, I must make a correction to my article last month. I wrote that Dolores Paeth was the grand marshal of the parade last year. She was grand marshal two years ago. My apologies to Jack Boylan, who received this well-deserved honor last year. I lost a year in there somewhere, but should have checked my facts. Did you know that there is a plaque on the wall in the card room that lists the grand marshals through the years? Thank you to the New Im-
age Chorus and Sound & Lighting for hosting the lunch on Friday and Saturday, and to all who organized and worked the games. Thank you, also, to management for providing this two-day event topped off by a fun party. We had a productive Homeowners meeting in March, with members voicing their concerns about the rules and regulations not being followed by visitors and renters, as well as some of our residents. There were some excellent suggestions made that we will take to management for consideration. The problem may lie in the fact that renters who rent directly through the owner are not aware of the rules and regulations. The residents of Tara Woods are very proud of this community and how it is maintained. The Board listens to all concerns and our director with that responsibility meets with management on a monthly basis. All concerns are discussed and usually resolved in a timely manner. I have always found management to be open to suggestions regarding community improvement and beautification. We strive to maintain an open

Prepare for Health Care Costs in Retirement As you save and invest for retirement, what are your ultimate goals? Do you plan on traveling the world? Purchasing a vacation home? Pursuing your hobbies? At the Association Meeting in January, there were 300 paid members. Today there are 260 paid members. The reason for this is that many of the memberships that expired on January 31st, 2014 have not been renewed. This article is a gentle reminder for any residents who have not yet paid dues for 2014, to please do so now. Your help is needed to keep our membership numbers up. Dues can be paid now, especially for those who will be leaving for several months. Checks should be made out
to TWHA. Of course, cash is always accepted. Dues can be put in the rent slot outside of the homeowners office in the clubhouse. They can also be put in the box outside of my lanai door. ENTERTAINING NEWS
So Ladies and Gentlemen………These cold months of “winter” here in Tara Woods have given me time to look at the past into the Entertainers’ history. With the help of many current members, and most especially Miriam Norris, I was able to see what the productions were in the beginning, and I want to say thank you to all of you for your dedication to this group of seniors who refuse to grow up. This has been one busy group of people. I know that the past columns presented this information but it has been awhile and I feel it is time to be refreshed. The Entertainers began in 1992 when Miriam and Wayne Norris and Helen Moore thought that this community needed some additional sparkle. Their first production was “So Nice Not to See You” which they performed in April and again in October of 1992. I guess the
snowbirds heard so much about it they demanded a replay. They really struggled as they had none of the advantages that we now take for granted. There was no sound system, no light system and they had no money to pay for the production. They even had to purchase tickets to the show themselves, this included cast and crew. Do you think we could pull that one off today? The next year they put on a variety show called “Tara-iffic Follies”. It is interesting that many of the early shows that were put on were actually written by members of our community. At the end of this article I list the shows and years, it is quite an impressive body of work that our small community has presented. My hat goes off to you all. Eventually the sound and lighting improved on stage and in the hall; this then was turned over to the Sound & Lighting Committee. These dedicated Entertainers
continued to put on two or three shows a year until 2001. The shows were presented in January, February, March or April, once in December. Since 2001 the month of March was selected as the best time to produce the shows. I wonder if there were fewer other activities going on, because today I am not sure we would have space on the calendar to present any more shows. These people who worked on the production back stage and on stage were a dedicated group. Almost every one we see today that has been around Tara Woods since the late 1990’s was involved in some way in a production. We have much to thank all of them for. They gave us a great base which to continue to build on. Well I could ramble for many more lines but I think you get the idea. You need to look into your soul and see if you see a spark that could urge you to come and join this group that has such a long tradition. Maybe there are those of you who could write an original play that would be enjoyed by our audience. I hope I have given some of you something to consider. With the holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. This is a first for me, as I normally don’t preach to others. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a “social session� out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know
that I might be slightly over the limit. That’s when I did something that I’ve never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before. I don’t know where I got it and now that it’s in my garage, I don’t know what to do with it.

MY TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2014 I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, and I don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there. PLEASE DO YOUR PART! You can do your bit by remembering to share this with at least one unstable person. My job is done! Life is too short for negative drama and petty things. So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly! Well that forgiveness part is up to you!!! From one unstable person to another... I hope everyone is happy in your head. We’re all doing pretty well in mine!

SPORTS AROUND TARA WOODS “MAGIC” COMES CLOSE The progress report of our “TARA WOODS MAGIC” softball team is encouraging. We came close to getting into the win column. Our last two games in Febuary were close, more timely hitting and less miscues, and “we
had’em”. We think the “rust” is finally wearing off. We had a spaghetti dinner in March to raise funds for equipment, and thank you to all who attended. More on this in the May issue.
And speaking of thank you, our fans who come out to the games are amazing. Thank you for your support and encouragement, it is greatly appreciated. In fact they are the talk of the league. Hopefully we can reward them with a win.

APPRECIATION WEEKEND If you attended the evening social and dance on Saturday evening at the close of the Appreciation Weekend of February 28 and March 1, you know that recognition was given to the winners of all the games that were played. As for the three games on the tennis courts, we had 55 people playing on Friday, and 60 people playing on Saturday. We had to total the scores of all three games to determine the man and woman winner for each day. I thought it would be interesting to list the winners of the three separate games that were played on the tennis courts that weekend. If we could award a prize to the winners of the “Hole in the Board” game, Friday’s winners would have been Henri La Liberty with 3 and Glen Fisher with 4. Saturday’s winners would have been Henri La Liberty (again) and Eddie Amarando, both with 5. You have to have very good aim – or lots of luck – to get 5 balls through that small hole in the board! As for hitting any of the three chairs on the court, it may have looked easy, but I can tell you it wasn’t at all easy – and the score sheet will back me up on that. Friday’s winners would have been Lee Brda with 8 and John Goers with 15. Saturday’s winners would have been a tie with Linda Engel and Agatha Breen both getting 12 and George Daly and Art Frederick both getting 9. As for knocking down those 10 bowling pins, that wasn’t easy
either. No one knocked down all 10 pins either day, but these are the people who knocked down 9 pins on Friday: Anita Sherman for the women, and Eddie Amarando, Bob Polenska, Glen Fisher, and Warren Engel for the men. On Saturday, no woman got all 9 pins, but for the men, Barry Maberry, Glen Fisher, Richard Binkowski, and Gene Dickie all knocked down 9 pins. Even though you didn’t get mentioned at the Awards Night, “Congratulations” to all of you for your success in the individual tennis games. We hope to have all three games again at next year’s Appreciation Weekend and we hope that the workers who volunteered their time will help out again at the games next year. Your help was greatly appreciated at this year’s games! We could not have the games without all of you volunteers working together. Thank you!

March 20th marked the end of the Women’s tennis season. The Tara Woods Lady Bugs played the top-ranked Herons Glen Volley Girls, and the Tara Woods Angels played the last place team from Six Lakes. Because of the March 10 deadline for the Columns, the final standings can’t be reported here, but they should be posted on the tennis bulletin board. The end-of-season round robin and luncheon were held at Herons Glen on Thursday, March 27th. MEN’S LEAGUE Red League No report. White League No report. Blue League On Thursday, February 27th, the Eagles beat the Six Lakes Colts, taking 5 sets, and losing only 1 set. As of that date, the Eagles were in 4th position in the league standings and only three points out of third place. They think they have a good shot at picking up third place. Our two Tara Woods Blue Teams – the Eagles and the Tigers – were scheduled to play each other on Thursday, March 6th. That match was postponed because of rain.

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Tennis Association meeting that was held on February 23rd was well attended. On the agenda for that meeting were possible revisions to the Association By-Laws. After quite a bit of discussion a majority of the members in good standing accepted the revisions. The committee responsible for reviewing and suggesting changes to the old By-Laws was comprised of George Daly, Warren Engel, Glen Fisher, and Fred Puhlfuerst. Also updated at that meeting were The Rules of Play and the sheet on Code of Conduct, On-Court Rules, and Tennis Etiquette. As for updates to the tennis courts, it was noted that four new scoring posts were put in place and Fred Puhlfuerst was thanked for using the pool “noodles” as part of the new scoring posts. The bright yellow and pink noodles are very easily readable from across the courts. Fred was also thanked for fixing the awning support poles on the white benches that sit on our courts. The court numbers on both sides of each court were also put up by Fred. Thanks to Fred for taking the initiative to improving our tennis court area. Nancy Schoeppner cleaned the top white part of the nets on Courts 3 and 4 with a special cleaner. Thanks to Nancy, those nets now look so much better. There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the tennis bulletin board for people willing to clean the nets on a monthly basis.
A list of paid Tennis Association members will also be posted on the tennis bulletin board. The Tennis Association will hold their next meeting on Sunday, March 30th, at 5:45 PM. At that meeting there will be an election of officers for the 2014-2015 tennis season. Plan to attend that meeting to vote for our Tennis Association President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. You need to be a member in good standing to be eligible to vote at any Tennis Association Meeting, which means you need to have your dues paid for that year. Our Treasurer will be collecting the $1.00 dues at the monthly meetings. ROUND ROBIN The tennis Round Robin held on Sunday, February 23rd, had a good attendance, as 29 people played tennis on a beautiful, sunny day and later 48 people enjoyed pizza from Jet’s Pizza. The tennis Round Robin scheduled for Sunday, March 30th will be hosted by Bob & Debbie Polenska, with help from Roger & Kathy Rafferty. Bob has decided to make Jambalaya for the dinner. The monthly Tennis Association Meeting will be held at 5:45 PM, following the dinner. Sign up to play tennis that day, as everyone seems to enjoy the opportunity to play with and against different players. The last Round Robin of the season is scheduled for April 27th. That dinner will be hosted by George & Janet Daly.
TENNIS LESSONS Beginner tennis players who want to learn the basics and anyone wishing to improve their tennis game are invited to come out to the tennis courts on Mondays at 12:00 Noon. Instructors are Don Boehlke, Warren Engel, Glen Fisher, and Fred Puhlfuerst.

A BIT OF LONG ISLAND TRIVIA Long Island became alive with “The Sound of Music”, when Carrie Underwood and Company brought the Alps to Bethpage for live TV. The hills may be alive with the sound of music…..but who knew those hills (Alps), an Abbey full of singing Nuns, seven frolicking von Trapp kids, even ‘Edelweiss’, were all just south of the Long Island RR tracks. The musical was staged indoors at Grumman Studios, the birthplace of Apollo lunar modules and now home to massive sound stages. This production was the first full scale musical staged LIVE for television in more than 50 years. It was also the highest NBC viewed broadcast since “ER’s” April 2, 2009 finale. And to think, “The Sound of Music” all happened from the Grumman Studios in Bethpage, LI, New York.

GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club wants to Thank everyone who donated to our Trash and Treasure. We also want to thank Fred Puhlfuerst for repainting the garden‘s sign. It looks GREAT ! This year’s Garden Club Luncheon is Friday, April 11th. This event is open to Garden Club members ONLY. This is a GREAT time to decide to join. Dues payable at Luncheon are $5.00. April Florida Gardening Calendar What to Plant Annuals: Plant heat-tolerant annuals, such as coleus, vinca, and portulaca. Bulbs: Cannas thrive in the heat of summer. New varieties have colorful leaves as well as flowers. Herbs: Some to start now include basil, coriander, cumin, and mint. Vegetables: Continue planting warm-season crops, such as southern pea, bush bean, and sweet potato. Mulch beds well and monitors irrigation if the weather is dry. What to Do Pests: Monitor insect activity and learn which bugs damage plants and which do not. Flowering plants: Check for thrips if leaves and/or flowers of gardenias and roses are damaged. Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on developing tomato plants. Palms: Identify and treat environmental and nutritional disorders in palm trees. Oleanders: Inspect chewed or ragged leaves for oleander caterpillars at work. Fruits: Propagate fruit crops by air layering and grafting. Perennials and bulbs: Divide clumps of bulbs, ornamental grasses, or herbaceous perennials to expand or rejuvenate garden beds or to pass along to friends. Shrubs: Choose from a wide variety of shrubs to add to the landscape now.
MIDWEST CLUB What a great parade we had on Appreciation Weekend. All the clubs did a fantastic job. I can’t say enough about our Italian entry. Thank you to the Dunnings and Dorsetts for the pizza cart and to the Heidmous and Wehrung entry of the wine cart. Great job to all of you. Mike Girty your ideas are always wonderful - the gondola and the pope mobile. Chick Jakacki did a great job as the pope, and your security detail was amazing. Debbie and Bob Polenska, great job as the tourists. Bill Goodhue, you steered that gondola on the right
course. A big thank you to those who walked in the parade. Our first place prize was won because of each and every one of you. Thank you! Our last meeting of the season will be Sunday, April 13th at 4:00 PM. One of the suggestions I had when you filled out the suggestion sheet was a golf cart drag race. Well, we are going to give it a try. We will hold the race in the clubhouse parking lot. Decorate and soup up your cart and bring it to race. NEW ENGLAND CLUB Our next event is our annual YankeeRed Sox-alright... World Champion Red Sox--party at Beef O’Brady’s on Thursday, April 10th. Our meet time is 6:45 PM, as the game begins at 7:05 PM. I’m sure you all know to wear your finest Yankee and Red Sox gear. The club will pick up the tab for all beer, wine, soda & coffee. Club members are responsible for their own food checks. A complimentary dessert will be served. There will also be free raffles. Sign-ups started March 10th and the deadline is April 4th, so if you haven’t signed up, please do so ASAP.
Thank you to all club members who attended the New England-Mid Atlantic and New England-Midwest challenges. Your support is appreciated. The Midwest hosted a very fun party, with a delicious meal. The Lobsterfest is Saturday, April 12th and being that the Columns deadline is March 10th, I have no information to give you, so please watch the bulletin board and Channel 195 if you are interested in this event. COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes each Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. These lessons are open to all residents and visitors. We discuss Computer Basics on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, and cover Advanced Topics on the other weeks. In March, we covered the essentials of the Internet and how to use it, including how to search for information effectively and how to use your email program. This month we intend to conclude the Basics series with home networking, pictures, games, and an overall wrap-up of Microsoft Windows.
The advanced topics that we discussed in March centered around ebooks, reader devices such as Kindle and Nook, how to download ebooks from the Internet or the Public Library, how to change the format of an ebook to match your device, and some new inexpensive programs that let you read ebooks on your Windows PC, laptop, or tablet. This turned out to be one of the most popular topics with our members. In April we plan to go over Facebook and Twitter, then AntiVirus and Security. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, so the scheduling of these lessons is tentative. The next topic that will
cash prize will be given to the fastest cart. If you don’t have an entry, we need you to cheer on your favorite driver. After the big race, the club will provide burgers with the fixings. There will be a signup sheet to bring salads and desserts. BYOB and money for raffle tickets. Barb Goodhue

It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. Bring your laptop computer with you if you want to follow along (this is optional). Bring something to take notes with. NEW YORK/ NEW JERSEY CLUB We had another good time and good turn-out for our March meeting. Thanks to George Daly, Ken Clark and Dave Simonson for preparing the delicious Cuban sandwiches which were accompanied by a wonderful array of salads provided by members. We had a fun time playing “Show Me The Money�, led by George D’Alessandro, assisted by Tony Perre. Thank you to all who helped and provided the great food.
