Siesta, city hold summit

Beach University back in session at public beach pavilion By John Morton Catherine Wunderlich loves to recite this slogan: “Beach University! We have a 100% acceptance rate and zero student debt.” The free, long-running educational series returns in March, guiding beachgoers through a weekly 45-minute class that showcases Siesta Beach and its many characteristics. Issues regarding the environment and the beach’s habitat are often at the forefront.

“We get people who come specifically for the seminar, and then many who are just passing by and the subject matter catches their ear,” said Wunderlich, who serves as special events coordinator for Siesta with Sarasota County. “Our guests enjoy hearing about things they might never have thought about before. They learn there’s more to the beach than playing volleyball or going for a walk.” Continued on page 8

Valentine’s Day vows run rampant By Jane Bartnett

L

ove was finally in the air again on Siesta Beach. The annual Say “I Do” Again ceremony, hosted by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, made its festive return on Valentine’s Day after a two-year absence, due to the pandemic. A Siesta Key tradition, the sunset ceremony has been held on Siesta Beach for more than three decades. This year’s event brought out more than 200 couples who came to publicly proclaim their love for each other and renew their marriage vows. There were kissing booths and beautifully decorated photo locations on the beach. Some couples brought family and friends along to celebrate their big day and a general feeling of joy and happiness filled the air, along with love-themed songs. A little flower girl dressed in a fairytale outfit posed for pictures with her proud grandparents and parents. Many brides came to the beach with pink and white roses that were distributed by county staff as part of the $15 early-registration package that couples paid to take part in the service. Brides and grooms and their guests also enjoyed cupcakes decorated with pink and red icing.

In a private, behind-closed-doors meeting on Feb. 16, Sarasota Mayor Erik Arroyo and his city manager, Marlon Brown, hosted at Sarasota City Hall a contingency from Siesta Key to discuss the city’s interest in exploring the annexation of the island. Among the Siesta Key leaders present were Tim Hensey and Tracy Jackson of Save Siesta Key, the group who is seeking incorporation instead of being governed by Sarasota County; Frank Jurenka of the Siesta Key Condominium Council; Mark Spiegel of the Siesta Key Coalition, a group created to fight against the large hotels being planned for the island; and Catherine Luckner and Joyce Kouba of the longstanding Siesta Key Association. “The meeting went very well and everyone is remaining optimistic and open-minded moving forward,” Arroyo said. The invitation came after Arroyo told his city commissioners in January that he’d like to begin discussions. On Jan. 4, the Sarasota County Legislative Delegation with a 3-3 vote put a halt for now to Save Siesta Key’s eightContinued on page 29

Word on the beach

Greetings from the Gulf A menu (way too full) of memories By John Morton

R

ed Lobster, you taught the Mortons that fish can be consumed without being rolled in beaucoup batter and submerged in gallons of bubbling lard. This blew our minds. And possibly saved our lives? When we first rolled into your place in 1972, I believe we ordered deep-fried, well-done perch with a side of fried cheese curds. After some consultation, we discovered the world of reasonable fish consumption and we soon, with our tastebuds raging and our hearts healthier, made you a Sarasota staple for our visits. Hey, it’s no small feat to become part of our big feast. You should know that our family tradition was to sit up north and use careful scrutiny to plan out in advance our Sarasota gluttony. You were part of an all-star list: Red Lobster. Trolley Station. The Dragon. The Inn Between. Magic Moment. The Greenhouse. Brown Derby. Windjammer. The Oaks. The Original Oyster Bar. And now, they are all gone. In some cases, long gone. Indeed, looking back, there were certain foods, from certain places, for which we drooled at the very thought. And we hit them up, religiously. I recall my first introduction to a computer spreadsheet, handed out to us on the beach by my CPA father, coming in the form of a week-long dining itinerary/contract. I was even asked for a signature. Before I continue, let it be known that some of the Sarasota favorites that eventually became chains and reached Wisconsin -- Red Lobster and Outback first come to mind -- were shunned despite being in our own back yard. These were Sarasota destinations. They tasted better when on vacation. Anyway, when together on Crescent Beach my family still talks all the time about our old-time Sarasota dinners. They literally serve as the menus of our

vacation lifetime. If you are like us, with an appetite for culinary memories, go lickety-split to srqwhatitusedtobe.blogspot.com. There, some remarkable person -- who doesn’t share his or her name -- serves up the most comprehensive and impressive history and chronology of what business stood where, and when, at every Sarasota address. Historic pictures dot the listings. And, despite constant turnover in these parts, the blogger doesn’t miss a thing. For example, the day I heard in January that Red Lobster closed its doors after 52 years, I immediately checked the blog. And there it was, dutifully updated. Scrolling through the site was quite the treat. I started with the Oaks, because I swear you could smell that place from the airport (when you used to have to walk outside from your plane -- which we were more than happy to do). It started at the southwest corner of Stickney Point and Tamiami in what was literally a shack. In 1989, it moved to 6112 S. Tamiami Trail, where it spent 30 glorious years. Prior to that, and typical of the dizzying turnover in our area, the building was first home to a blacktop company, a health club, a palm reader, a music store, and a topless tavern. Now that’s a combo. And I can vouch for that last one. In early January of 1983 at that location, my buddies and I ordered beers at the Pleasure Pub from a lady with a tattoo of a tarantula on her left breast. Who would have thought she was ahead of her time! But that scene was a far cry from the naughtiness going on at 6727 S. Tamiami Trail. Remember South Trail Cinema? The porno theater? And remember who got in trouble there? It’s where Sarasota’s very own Peewee Herman got caught inside with his wee-wee ... well ... shall we say outside? Funniest of all is the fact that the movie house, which opened in 1972, was called the Jerry Lewis Cinema and -- get this -its first film was Fiddler on the Roof! Not even I can make this stuff up.

At least Pee-wee had his big adventure under a roof, although the opposite would have been downright impressive. Hey, Pee-wee, I was no angel in that place either, whatever that’s worth. How much hate was there for the place? It was literally fire-bombed once, and later struck by lightning. After the dirty movie joint was finally razed in 1995, Kenny Rogers Roasters came in (fill in your own joke), followed by Manhattan Bar & Grill and then Beckham’s Bar & Grill. In 2018, Mellow Mushroom made it home and it has been a big success. But back in 1978, when my friend and I decided we had to get into a nudie flick, we were far from mellow but also not on mushrooms. No, we were just loaded with teenage testosterone and hormonal curiosity. What was the plan? Between shows, we’d rig the side door near the screen, in the back lot, so it didn’t lock. Then, when the moans and groans got underway, we’d burst in, no-doubt giggling, and take our seat in the front row. What we forgot was the fact it was 2 p.m. on a sun-splashed spring day. Well, you can imagine how the pitch-dark theater lit up. I’ve never heard so many people shriek. We even scared the Dallas out of Debbie. (For those who get that reference, it’s OK. Don’t be ashamed. For those who just Googled it, at least you learned something -- which is rare in these columns.) Anyway, and I’m transitioning at full speed here, it’s strange to know that many of Siesta Key’s dining institutions were once something else. Doesn’t the SKOB feel like it’s been there forever? Well, it used to be Neptune’s, then Tequila Grill, then Pancho’s.

Daiquiri Deck? The previous names associated with your spot were Anna’s Deli (its first locale) and Cafe Gardens. So, whatever happened to my family’s favorites? Trolley Station, home to great French onion soup, became Carrabba’s. The Dragon, home to great chicken fried rice, was eventually swallowed up by the Captain Curt’s compound. The Inn Between, Magic Moment and the Greenhouse (later called the Summerhouse -- as in the original one) would eventually give way to condos. (It was at the Summerhouse where I, in my teens and 20s, would wear a coat and tie and gaze into a dressed-to-the-nines girlfriend’s eyes, as tiki torches blazed and piano music offered a serenade. Man, how I miss that place.) Brown Derby -- where I first saw lobsters in a tank -- eventually was torn down for Westfield Mall. The Windjammer is now the site of Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Like Red Lobster, the former Oaks building stands vacant right now after Smoqehouse gave it a try. And the Original Oyster Bar is now where Culver’s -- home to the ButterBurger -- does business. This is a bit of irony, seeing as I’m from Wisconsin. That’s where Culver’s was created (of course). It also seems like karma. They’re trying to reel me back in! The (grease) trap has been set! Finally, with this wild history of restaurant roulette in mind, we give tribute to the Beach Club. The Village hotspot has somehow, someway, not only never moved from its original location but in 2022 it celebrates 75 years. That tops the Crescent Club, known for its “First Pour 1949” branding. As for our incredible Sarasota business blogger, I urge you to show yourself. You need to be given your props. I’ll even take you out to dinner. Just name the place! Good luck with that. (John Morton is managing editor of Siesta Sand.)

Should Siesta Key be open to the idea of annexation by the city of Sarasota? Keith Raleigh, N.C. “I don’t think so. I used to live in Sarasota and I always liked the idea of Siesta Key having its own identity. It’s such a neat little community.” Olivia Siesta Key “Nope. Siesta Key should be able to make its own decisions.” Keith Siesta Key “I’d say no. Siesta Key needs to control its own destiny. I’d try for incorporation again.” Austin Fort Lauderdale “Straight up, no way! Life in the city isn’t like life here on the Key, so the same rules and strategy shouldn’t apply. I’m from Fort Myers, so I know firsthand how different and unique Fort Myers Beach is when compared to Fort Myers.”

County mix-up on setbacks further irks hotel opponents By Phil Colpas At its regular meeting Jan. 25, the Sarasota County Board of Commissioners considered some interesting amendments to its Unified Development Code (UDC). One of these involved an apparent language mix-up related to the setback variance of commercial property that abuts residential property. This has evoked the ire of those against big hotels being built on Siesta Key. County staff told the board that some setback language was inadvertently left off the code that was applied to the two Siesta Key hotels that were approved. And in relation to height, what was approved now actually makes the two hotels nonconforming. Staff was asked to explore this. “During the hotel discussions out on Siesta Key recently, there were quite a few people in opposition of some of the (proposed hotel) heights,” said Donna Thompson, county planning and development services zoning administrator. “It was discovered that with the adoption of the 2000 zoning code language that requires not only the special exception for additional height over 35 feet, but there is also, prior to 2003, a requirement that additional setbacks be made for that additional height.” That language is not currently in the UDC.

Thompson said that it appears to have been eliminated in 2003. “Staff is wondering if you would consider bringing the language back, which would require 1 foot for each 4 feet of additional height above the 35 feet allowable in CG (commercial general zoning) to be added to the required 20 feet where CG abuts a residential property,” Thompson said. “This will make the two hotels that were recently approved non-conforming with regard to the height and the setback adjacent to the residential district.” Evidenced by attendance at county government meetings and participation at public hearings, there are a substantial number of residents opposed to the construction of large hotels that they say cannot be supported by the limited infrastructure of Siesta Key. “The Unified Development Code, under the Siesta Key Overlay District in the same section, states that any CG-zoned land that adjoins residential must have a minimum 20-foot setback,” said Mark Spiegel, president of the Siesta Key Coalition, which was founded to combat what it considers reckless development on the island. Island Chatter Projects on or near Siesta Key suggested, via surtax program The Sarasota County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 8 received a list of suggested projects to be funded, at least in part, through the county’s ongoing penny tax, or surtax. Projects on or near Siesta Key include the upkeep and upgrades at the Phillippi Estate Park buildings, including the historic mansion; the Siesta Beach pavilion; and the Gulf Gate library. Improvements at Turtle Beach Park and its campground are also on the list at about $2.9 million. Replacement of the campground bath house (featuring restrooms, showers, laundry, and storage facilities) is part of the project. For about $24 million, the water system on Siesta Key would receive improvements. This includes the replacement of the Stickney Point subaqueous water transmission main, the replacement of a storage tank, and construction of a new pump station. The county took control of the Key’s potable and waste water in 2013. Commissioner Christian Ziegler also suggested the county consider investing in an app that notifies residents of the number of parking spots available at Siesta Beach through the use of sensors installed in parking slots. It’s a program used at Tampa International Airport, he said. It was among recommendations to the commissioners by the Siesta Key Association. Others included upgrades in crosswalks and bike lanes. The Siesta Key Association’s minireef program also caught the attention of Commissioner Nancy Detert, who asked county staff members to assemble a report on how the reefs could play a larger role in improving water quality and marine habitat throughout the region, and how the county could possibly implement it. The county will fine-tune projects it selects at a March 29 meeting. Whether the surtax program continues will go to voters in the form of a referendum question on the November general election ballot. More than 30 years old, it was last renewed by voters in 2007. -- John Morton

History turns to rubble

Beach House once belonging to a World War II hero gets razed after county says no to repurposing the structure By Jane Bartnett A piece of Siesta Key history is no more. In early February, the former home of Siesta Key resident Capt. Ralph Styles, a U.S. Navy World War II hero and Pearl Harbor survivor, was demolished to make way for a new structure. The old-world blue Florida cottage at 99 Beach Rd. that stood facing the Gulf held a special place in Siesta Key’s history and in the hearts of longtime residents. For many Capt. Styles years before his death in 2008 at age 98, Styles held a patriotic sunset tradition. Joined by family, friends and many public officials who came to witness the occasion, Styles would lower the American flag while the haunting sounds of a bugler’s taps played in the background. He became a beloved legend on the Key. After the captain’s passing, the house changed hands several times and in 2016, it was purchased by Siesta Key resident Michael Holderness’ real estate company. Holderness restructured and improved the property, adding new windows, floors, and doors. He lived in the home and later used it as a rental property before selling it to a private owner in 2021. About six months ago, when Holderness learned that the new owners planned to tear the house down to make way for a new residence, he approached them and asked if he could buy the structure back. He told them that his plan was to donate the home to Sarasota County and pay all the costs involved in moving it to a new location, such as nearby Beach Access 3B. “The house was completely restructured,” Holdnerness reported.

Far left: The house at 99 Beach Rd. was knocked down Feb. 11 (photo by Mike Cosentino); Near left: A plaque in the Siesta Key Village pays tribute to Capt. Ralph Styles. (photo by Trebor Britt). Above: A Shawn McLoughlin painting of the house. (submitted by Mike Holderness)

Although it did not have historical designation, Holderness felt that it could be placed elsewhere on county beach land. He began contacting Sarasota County officials and offered to pay for all costs involved in moving the house to a new location. “They refused,” he said of the county. “The idea was to save a valued piece of history and repurpose it.” Holderness said the former Styles home “Would have made a quality lifeguard office, welcome center, and/or a police outpost complete with much-needed public restrooms. The county showed no interest.” His next step was to reach out to the Siesta Key Association. The group got behind the effort and Catherine Luckner, the organization’s president, began her own outreach to county officials. On behalf of the association, Luckner pleaded with the county to consider Holderness’ offer to save the historic structure. She also offered several suggestions for new locations.

“These were local places that could have had real benefit to the public,” she said. “The house was beautiful. It was newly renovated and Mike had done a great job. Everything was brand-new inside and structurally sound. It could have been a wonderful addition to a local beach park. “It was a small house, so there could have been many uses. The county was just not interested. It’s so unfortunate.” When both pleas fell on deaf ears and all efforts were exhausted, the fate of the house was sealed. Despite his disappointment, Holderness said “The new owner is doing the right thing -- meaning, homes on the coast, where people sleep, should be built to FEMA, ADA, and hurricane compliance.” He remains perplexed about the county’s refusal to accept his gift of the historic home. “It’s sad that it’s lost, but let’s not let it be forgotten,” said Holderness about the memory of Styles. Although the war hero’s former residence may only be a memory, his many

contributions to his nation and to Siesta Key -- the place that he made his home -- are not forgotten. Along with a painting by the late Siesta Key artist Shawn McLoughlin that captures the vintage beauty of the captain’s house at the sandy shore, photos and memories remain. Holderness said that for several years after Styles’ death, Siesta Key resident Andy Cooper, who had purchased the home, arranged for a flag ceremony to be held daily at the gazebo in the heart of Siesta Key Village. Although the flag ceremony no longer takes place, visitors to the gazebo will find a commemorative plaque that tells the story of the beloved Siesta Key resident -- a man who was also a submarine commander and former assistant director of Naval Intelligence. “The gazebo and the plaque are a part of the history of Siesta Key,” said Luckner. “They remain a lasting tribute to this great man who lived right here in Siesta Key. It’s so important that we keep our history alive.”

Save Siesta Key has new chairman Tim Hensey at helm; reflects on process, says task ahead is daunting By John Morton Tim Hensey is the new chairman of Save Siesta Key -- a group that he said learned a tough lesson when a local delegation of elected state officials voted down its incorporation bill Jan. 4. “We got a good old butt whipping behind a shed Hensey in politics,” said Hensey of the 3-3 tie that, for now, killed an effort by some Siesta Key residents to become a municipality instead of being governed by Sarasota County. “I personally don’t think we got a fair shake,” he added, while speaking to the Siesta Key Association at its Feb. 3 meeting. said Hensey. “My personal belief is our vote was predetermined. We got hosed.” Still, Save Siesta Key will give it another try, Hensey said. While it must start from scratch with the process, per state rules, Hensey said that resubmitting an application can be done “with minimal expense and effort.” The group has raised about $122,000 and has about $45,000 left. It can apply again in August for consideration in next spring’s Florida Legislature session. The earliest Siesta Key could become a town is Dec. 31 of 2023.

Every Seat has a

However, the proposal of House Bill 1035 that’s now being considered in Tallahassee makes the task even more difficult. Among its requirements would be that communities seeking incorporation must not only collect petitions of support from at least 60% of its registered voters, but also reach at that threshold with a non-binding referendum -- or straw vote -- before the state even considers an incorporation request. If required, that would likely take place in November. Currently, only a 10-percent petition requirement and a feasibility study are required for the legislature to take a look. With approval there, a binding local referendum would follow with only a majority vote needed to seal the deal. Whether or not the bill passes, Hensey said Save Siesta Key has “slim odds of getting it done.” “What we learned is that incorporation efforts rarely pass a first time -- it usually takes going back a second or third time to get it done,” he said. “If you look at what’s going on in Tallahassee right now, you’ve got a Republican governor, Republican House, and Republican Senate that are very anti-additional layer of government. We were fighting a huge political wave.” What’s the plan going forward? Hensey said Jodie Tierney, a new addition to the Save Siesta

Key board, will help with her experience as a lobbyist. She’ll take over the duties that were being handled by Jon Moyle, a Tallahassee-based attorney hired last summer by the group. “That’s a real art,” Hensey said of Tierney’s expertise. “To have someone on our board who knows how things work in Tallahassee is going to be huge.” The board is also seeking a local attorney to join, Hensey said, as well as someone with extensive fundraising experience. “On Siesta Key, I don’t think we’ll ever get to where we need to get if we don’t get our wallets behind our voice,” he said. A renewed effort with the petition drive will be a big task, considering the Key is loaded with part-time residents -- many of whom live in large condominium complexes. Hensey said only about a dozen neighborhood ambassadors were effective in working door-to-door, so the program will need a big boost in participation to reach the 60% mark. Prior to the January delegation vote, Save Siesta Key had around 2,400 petitions but only about 1,600 came from registered voters, representing only about 21% -the result, Hensey said, of being told by state staff members that it wasn’t a vital factor. The program, now in its 16th year, is a spinoff from the beach’s ambassador program where volunteers greet visitors and hand out literature and answer questions. Two of them -- Bruce and Joyce Broadbent -- decided a sit-down seminar would be a great way to address common themes (see accompanying story). This year’s program will be a five -week series, running each Thursday in March starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Siesta Beach pavilion. The dates and topics: • March 3: Siesta Key history with John McCarthy • March 10: Florida beach fossils, with Elena Burke • March 17: Marvelous mangroves, with Alyssa Vinson • March 24: Environmental impact of human behaviors, with Daniel Schewlakow • March 31: Beach nesting birds with Miri Hardy All presentations will be recorded and posted on the Sarasota County Play Facebook page.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sarasota County lessened the number of parking spots required for restaurants in order to allow for more outdoor seating. It now appears that this practice will remain intact for some businesses, as the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce successfully petitioned the county to keep the measures in place indefinitely for businesses south of Stickney Point Bridge. Part of the chamber’s request to keep it that way is because some restaurants have invested in outdoor seating in areas that used to be parking stalls. In south Siesta Key’s business district, for example, Toasted Mango in Crescent Plaza sacrificed a few parking spaces in front of its place to erect a tent and place picnic tables. And Captain Curt’s has installed outdoor seating where several parking spots used to be. At the Jan. 25 regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, Mark Smith, chair-elect of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, made the request. “During COVID, restaurants placed seating in their parking lots just to be able to attract customers and stay open,’’ Smith said. “Sarasota County initially waived the temporary use permit requirements to allow such outdoor seating, but that waiver is soon expiring.” With the continued fear of COVID-19, restaurants are finding that people prefer outdoor dining, Smith said. “The idea is to lessen the parking requirements for restaurants so that the outdoor seating can remain after Sarasota County’s temporary approval expires.” The South Bridge area has a large number of condominium units within walking distance to

restaurants. “Together with the success of the Siesta Key Breeze trolley and the free rides, customers are driving less,” Smith said. South Bridge-area restaurants are collecting data on how customers are arriving, and that will be presented at the upcoming county commission hearing, Smith said. The preliminary numbers indicate that around 53% are finding alternative methods to driving to get to the restaurants. For example, the use of golf carts as transportation on the key has been on a steady increase. “As golf carts have become more popular on Siesta Key, golf cart parking spaces make sense as you can park three golf carts in the same space as two cars,” Smith said. Additionally, the county is paving the vacant lot just to the south of Crescent Plaza, where a sheriff’s substation once stood, and the chamber is working on a contract with the county to have the lot be for chamber member use only — not for public use. “The contract/lease with the county for the use of a new parking lot south of Crescent Plaza for employee parking is in the works,” Smith said. “I believe that an agreement will be worked out in a few weeks.” Donna Thompson, the county’s planning and development services zoning administrator, explained the amendment to the county commissioners: “The chamber has brought through some changes to the Siesta Key parking requirements within the South Bridge area to change it from one space for 50 square feet of space to (one space for) 75 square feet of eating, drinking and waiting area.”

2021 tourism numbers shine Thanks to a strong increase in domestic and Canadian travel, statistics show that Florida welcomed 30.9 million domestic visitors in the fourth quarter of 2021. It was the second consecutive quarter with higher visitation rates than in 2019. For the year of 2021 as a whole, some 117.7 million domestic visitors were recorded, making it the highest level of domestic visitor numbers in the state’s history. In addition, 359,000 Canadian travelers visited Florida between October and December of 2021. That number is nearly three times as many as in the previous quarter. Approximately 1.5 million overseas visitors came to Florida in the fourth quarter of 2021, reflecting an increase of 198% compared to 2020, and 43% from the third quarter of 2021. Last year, Columbia became Florida’s No. 1 international origin country with 709,000 visitors. During the year of 2021, Dana Young, president and CEO of Visit Florida, stated that “Overall visitation not only exceeded 2019’s for the second quarter in a row, but domestically reached the highest point in our state’s history.” She called the last 12 months “An incredible year with more record-breaking success for Florida’s tourism industry.” Ann Frescura, executive director of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, said “What we heard from our members overall was that business in general was often record-setting, despite staffing shortages and delivery issues.” -- Jane Bartnett

Use your financial strategy like GPS

17

Sarasota Local Brings Experience & Trust to Siesta Key When you’re driving these days, it’s pretty hard to get lost because your smartphone’s Global Positioning System (GPS) can get you just about anywhere. And as an investor, you can have a similar experience by employing another directional tool – a personalized financial strategy.

you can send your children to college, a place where you can retire comfortably, a place where you can leave the type of legacy you want, and so on.

Let’s look at the parallels between your GPS and this type of strategy. To begin with, your GPS pinpoints your exact location at the start of your trip – in other words, it tells you where you are. And when you create a financial strategy, your first step is to evaluate your current situation by answering these types of questions: What are your assets? How much do you earn? How much do you owe? How much are you contributing to your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts? Once you’ve got a clear picture of your finances, you’ll be ready to begin your journey toward your long-term goals.

Joe St. Onge outside his office on Siesta Key.

Once your GPS has identified your starting point, it will then show you where you want to go and the routes to help you get there. And it’s the same with your financial strategy – you want it to help lead you to a particular place in your life. In fact, a well-designed strategy can show you the steps you need to take to help reach more than one destination – to a place where

Here’s another element of your GPS that applies to your financial strategy – the warnings. You’re certainly familiar with those thick red lines your GPS shows to indicate traffic slowdowns ahead. And while they’re annoying, they’re also useful in cautioning you that you may arrive at your destination later than you had originally planned. Your financial strategy can also express “warnings” about events that could hinder you from reaching your goals. These obstacles might include an illness or disability that could keep you out of work for a while, or the need for some type of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay or the services of a home health aide. Your financial strategy can not only identify these threats, but with the guidance of a financial

professional, suggest potential solutions. In addition to providing warnings about things such as heavy traffic and road construction, your GPS can change your route if you miss a turn or if you decide, for whatever reason, to go a slightly different way. Your financial strategy can also show you alternatives, if it’s comprehensive and overseen by a financial professional, who, using specialized software, can create hypotheticals – illustrations that provide alternative outcomes for different steps, such as retiring at various ages, investing different amounts each year or earning different rates of return. These hypotheticals can be quite helpful to you as your chart your course toward your goals, especially if you need to change your plans along the way. Your GPS and your financial strategy are two great tools for helping get you where you want to go.

A fighter on many fronts Tracy Jackson’s advocacy for Siesta Key is fueled by cancer battle, community love By Hannah Wallace

“The thing that people don’t understand about Siesta Key life,” said Tracy Jackson from her home on Sandy Beach Avenue, “is that this is a small-town neighborhood. We all love each other. We all care for each other. And we care for our island. “Maybe it’s the crystal sand that permeates everything.” Jackson’s passion for the Key has recently found the spotlight. She began to gain attention last year as one of the leaders of Save Siesta Key, the latest push for Siesta’s incorporation. But Jackson’s public passion stems in part from her personal experiences with cancer -- and the people who were there to help her through. Jackson, now 52, first moved to Siesta eight years ago, but her roots here go back much earlier. Her father and stepmother fell in love on Siesta Key Beach. During periodic vacations to visit them, Jackson, who grew up with her mother and stepfather in Illinois, fell in love with the island’s tight-knit feel. “It doesn’t matter if you live in Siesta Cove or Sandy Beach, this is a kind of Midwest community,” she said. In her pre-Siesta life, Jackson was married and divorced before moving to Las Vegas to establish a successful career in the medical field. “As a Midwesterner who moved to a place where everything is legal, and you have a Midwestern work ethic, you can really rise to the top (in Vegas),” she said. In 2014, a friend gave her a professional opportunity in Florida. She thought the crosscountry migration could be incorporated into her two-year plan; the friend told her they couldn’t wait that long. Within three weeks, Jackson had established her new home on Siesta Key. She took full advantage of the island lifestyle, taking walks and swimming daily

in the gulf with her beloved dog Chancellor, whom she called “the first love of my life.” In 2018, a mutual friend introduced her to a man who would become the second love of her life, Emmett Bonamarte. The burgeoning couple were soon commuting back and forth

between Siesta Key and Bonamarte’s home in Naples. “She’s the most loving, nicest person I’ve ever met,” said Bonamarte. “She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.” But just as the relationship was

blossoming, Chancellor was diagnosed with lung cancer. Three months later, Jackson learned that she herself had triple-positive breast cancer. It was the same diagnosis her mother had battled 10 years earlier. Jackson had received the phone call from the doctor while she was in the car, on her way to visit Bonamarte. She walked into his house and immediately called her mother. “Obviously, cancer is a humbling experience,” Jackson said. “But my mom is probably one of the most supporting forces in my whole life. I get all of my strength from her.” Jackson then gave Bonamarte permission to take a step back from the relationship. “This isn’t what you bought into,” she told him. “We can reconvene when I’m all done with this. My mother is my playbook.” He responded, “I’m not going anywhere. This is just a bump in the road.” During more than a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Jackson’s innate positivity never wavered, said Bonamarte. In fact, she found herself in search of a new purpose. “I was convinced if I got out and did something, I would feel better,” she said. Jackson first helped to build and market an online platform highlighting Siesta Key businesses, which often suffered most during red tide outbreaks and other natural disasters. Then she learned about Save Our Siesta Sand 2, a Big Pass advocacy group. Whenever she was able to clear “the fog of chemo,” she sat down with other locals who were concerned about Siesta Key’s fate. She spent two hours at the Siesta Key Oyster Bar listening to John Davidson, who told her about the push for Siesta Key’s incorporation in the ‘90s. The seeds for Continued on page 46

Cosentino to run again for county seat By John Morton Siesta Key resident Mike Cosentino, who has for years fought Sarasota County regarding issues mostly regarding land use, filed in early February his intent to run for the county’s District 2 seat on its board of county commissioners. Said Costenino of his candidacy, “As has been clearly and repeatedly demonstrated, we have no voice in our local government. I’m running for county commission to be the people’s voice. “Across party lines, we all want to preserve and protect our community. I’ll do exactly that. Litigating against the county has given me the knowledge and skills to use the law to protect our interests.” As of now, he’ll face city of

Sarasota commission member and fellow Sarasota native Hagen Brody in the Democratic primary in August.

The deadline to qualify for candidacy is June 17. It’s Cosentino’s second stab at it, first running in 2018 but losing in the primary for District 4. The two county seats up for grabs this November involve Siesta Key in terms of territory. The northern half of the Key falls within the District 2 map and the southern part belongs to District 4. Commissioner Christian Ziegler represents District 2. The incumbent has yet to announce if he’ll run for re-election. Commission chairman Alan Maio currently represents District 4. Cosentino was behind two citizen-passed amendments in 2018 that prohibited the county from selling or giving away county-owned parks and another

that would prevent the county from vacating any road segments or rights of way near any body of water. The county’s vacating of part of the Key’s Beach Road was on the front burner regarding those efforts. The public’s votes on the amendments were overturned in 2019 by a 12th Judicial Circuit judge in a ruling saying the changes are invalid and enforceable. Cosentino’s appeals have also been shot down. “Unfortunately, I’ve proven that our wishes, land-use laws, and votes are basically meaningless to the current commissioners. All of that will change if I’m elected,” Cosentino said. “Foremost, I’ll Continued on page 33

#1 SHOPPING DESTINATION ON TRIP ADVISOR! What makes this store so unique? As you walk into the store, you are always greeted by the friendly staff and you automatically feel the family-like atmosphere. The staff “is family”, according to Monica, owner, of Silver City Sarasota. Debra and Suzanne have worked for Monica since its inception 15 years ago. Arlene joined the family three years ago. Ask any of the staff and they will tell you how much they love working at the store. “The big chain corporate jewelry stores hold no appeal for this generation, Monica, owner of Silver City Sarasota comments. Our customers like the warmth and care we offer. Walking into any larger retailer you can never seem to find the same sales associate you met the first time. Reading the reviews on both Trip Advisor and Google confirms this fact. You will find compliment after compliment not only on the beautiful jewelry, but on the awesome customer service the staff offers.” The main attraction for this retailer is the trademarked “Siesta Key Watercolor Gemstone” collection. The inspiration came to the retailer because as Monica realized, “Tourists always wish they can somehow take their vacation memories with them”. With this in mind, Silver City Sarasota designed the Siesta Key Watercolor GemstoneTM. They were able to capture the colors of Siesta Key’s blue/green water and put it into a quartz gemstone. The Quartz gemstone is a fusion of the tropical colors that surround us. Just looking into the clear beautiful gemstone will transport you back to our island of paradise representing our sea, sky and the beautiful sand of Siesta Key Beach. Each piece is designed by them with a beautiful variety of designs both in sterling silver and 14k gold. Silver City Sarasota also carries a collection of jewelry made with actual Siesta Key Beach Sand. The simple elegant collection is their second-best selling item according to Monica. Giving back is also at the heart of the staff of Silver City Sarasota. They felt the need to help Mote Marine Aquarium after the difficult bout of red tide in our area in 2018. They took it upon themselves to invest their own finances into designing, creating and trademarking the “Tide Away” Save Our Beaches Collection. 25% of the proceeds from this collection go directly to fund Mote Marine Aquarium’s red tide research department. It’s no accident that this gem of a store has been chosen by locals and tourist alike as Siesta Key’s #1 “must stop” shopping destination. They are located in the Southbridge Mall shopping center at 6539 Midnight Pass Rd, Siesta Key.

Mind Body Soul: Whole Wellness By Dolores Day “There is a divine spark at the center of your being, and you need to recognize this, believe it and act upon your belief.” -- Ernest Holmes

T

here lives inside of me and within you an intelligence that cannot be observed under a microscope. A spirit that cannot be captured or bottled. It is an indescribable and undeniable energy that moves through all things and all people. It has been studied and labeled by scientists as a field of energy. It has been described by philosophers as the “intelligence of life.” Spiritualists and religions call it God, the Holy Spirit. Interestingly, each group is really identifying and speaking about the same exact thing, only using a different word that feels good to them in their cultural language to describe it. Often times this causes confusion and misunderstanding. However, it does not matter what term one uses to label this spark, its existence is truth. What is important is that all recognize and awaken to “the something greater” that is within, the power that exists in each and all. Because life appears on the surface to be complicated and busy, it may be easy to gloss over such a powerful truth. However, I believe it is the journey of each soul to discover this power within themselves and all of life when they are ready. It is the quest to awaken and connect with this source and make contact with the very energy that gives them life. Whatever name one uses to label it is inconsequential. It is the mere observation and awareness of this powerful presence that changes one’s life and helps them to awaken to more than just what we can see. So what are at the steps to discovering this beautiful spark of energy and beginning to live an extraordinary unlimited life? First, one must be willing to seek it. This means a conscious interest

to find something more within, not without. The willingness to receive and connect to this ultimately is the beginning of the decay of the human ego. It is the very crossing of this barrier in our mind that allows one to recognize this spark. There is not one, none excluded, that do not have this same power within them. In fact, this spiritual essence is the common thread amongst all humanity that connects us. Once we believe in this intelligence that breathes within us, we will naturally begin to recognize it in all living things. When we become aware of this presence within, we will then be able to see the beauty and the reflection of this divinity within everyone else. It truly is experiential. No book, no article, no scientific evidence can help you discover it. They can only point to the proof of its existence. If we begin to cultivate awareness and recognize this energy that exists in all, we can then begin to see this reflection within ourselves and all of life. When we connect to it our experience of life in general becomes magnified. It’s as if by acknowledging life, we begin to experience it even more. Practicing mindfulness and slowing down to observe life helps to increase this heightened awareness as well. The mind is

unable to focus on one object when the train is going 120 mph. We must slow down and be still. It is up to us to use this spiritual energy and power for the creation of good. Believing we are connected to unlimited possibilities and potential fosters an awe and reverence for life. It helps us to live in a place of amazement and wonderment. We can begin to see through the eyes of our soul and recognize the significance and the beauty of all creation. It is there for our taking, for our joy, but we must be willing to recognize it and expect that we will see it everywhere we go. When we do, this energy begins to fuel our own life with love and shifts begin to happen in the mind as we go from taking life for granted to awe at how the universe works and functions. When we shift to understand that life is happening all around us and we do not have to do anything, it is already being done, a blanket of peace appears in our daily life. Our fears and worries begin to dissipate as our attention on our ego fades. Love takes its place. We begin to look for opportunities to see the love and divinity in every person. And you know the saying: Whatever you look for you, will find. So as we go out in our daily lives, may we be able to slow down and look for the divine spark of life that moves us and lives through us. May we begin to look for it in others and the world around us. Today, may we begin to live our life awake, aware and enthusiastically for all that is before us. For it is in the expectation of these things, that we will find them. Peace be with you friends. (De Day is an empowerment life coach. Get on board! Here’s a step-by-step lesson in the fun frolic known as paddleboarding, where it rules at Turtle Beach By Jane Bartnett

I

t’s one of the fastest-growing water sports around. Stand-up paddleboarding is low-cost, peaceful, relaxing, easy to master, great exercise and, once you get the hang of it, excellent for practicing balance. Tracing its lineage as far back as ancient Peru, the modern-day version got its start on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii in the 1950s. On Siesta Key, Turtle Beach is one of the best places for paddleboarders. To learn more, we sought out Kayaking SRQ, one of the recommended vendors found on the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources website. It has a full setup on the south end of the Key where it also offers kayaking. Company employee Justin Oliver, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with eight years of paddleboarding and kayaking experience, gave us a private tutorial on the fine art of paddleboarding. “Anyone of any age can paddleboard,” said Oliver. “It takes about five minutes to learn and you don’t have to be a superstar athlete or a big-deal surfer. It’s like riding a bike -- it just takes some practice and learning how to balance.” The board, made of rubberized plastic and filled with foam for buoyancy, runs 8 to10 feet long with a rudder on the bottom. A coiled leash with an ankle strap that tethers the board to the rider sits on the top. In keeping with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, each board is equipped with a

lifejacket – it’s considered a vessel. Although adults are not required to wear one, children are. There’s ample room for a cooler at the front end and experts advise bringing a whistle along for the ride. It’s a smart way to warn

other vessels that you’re nearby. Kayaking SRQ also supplies each board rental with a “dry bag” to store cell phones, keys and wallets. Most people paddleboard barefoot. It’s wise to wear a swimsuit. “Everyone falls in

at some point,” Oliver said with a laugh. While people of all ages, shapes and sizes have taken up the sport, our instructor reported that having strong core muscles helps. With practice, it can build muscles. “Some first-timers get back to land feeling a little sore,” Oliver said. “Paddleboarding makes use of your core and your legs. After a few times out on the water, it gets much easier. And it’s just plain fun.” To get started, Oliver explained the basics. After placing the board at the edge of the shore in shallow water, he began our class by saying: • Hold the board at the edges with your hands and facing forward, kneel in the center of the board. • Start to stand up slowly by moving one foot at a time to the position of your hands. • For balance, lift your chest first and, keeping your knees bent, slowly stand up. • Stand with your feet in a parallel position, at hip-distance. • Stay in the center of the board, keeping knees slightly bent. • Shift your weight by moving your hips. • Look to the horizon and, keeping your knees bent, put the paddle in the water and push it front to back -- paddle three strokes on one side and then three strokes on the other side. And, he added, “Don’t look down or you’ll lose your balance and fall into the water. Continued on page 31

Say ‘I Do’ Again

Although it was a brisk winter day, the sun was out and the sky put on quite a show. As the afternoon turned into early evening, a brilliantly colored rainbow peeked out between a few clouds as bright streaks of yellow, blue and pink lit up the sky. For Siesta Key residents Bob and Catherine Luckner, who married on Valentine’s Day and celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year, the event is an occasion that they never miss. “It’s a very special day for us,” said Catherine Luckner, who serves as president of the non-profit Siesta Key Association. “This is one of the largest and best Say ‘I Do’ Again ceremonies that I can remember.” Several couples came to the beach dressed in their finest Valentine’s Day attire. Andrew and Luz Hereth of Sarasota, who have been married for 15 years, dressed up for the occasion. She wore a brilliant white bridal veil and a black velvet outfit. He wore a bow tie, white shirt and white fedora. “We come every year,” Andrew Hereth said. Added Luz Hereth, “We’re so happy that this event is back again.” Married in Reno, the Hereths have made Sarasota their home since 2015. Another Sarasota couple, Don and Tammie

Gursky, came to celebrate 45 years of marriage. Tammie wore the same lace Juliet cap and wedding veil that she wore when the couple first said “I do” at their Pennsylvania wedding. For some couples it was their first visit for the ceremony, but certainly not their last. “We’ll be back again,” said Adrienne Ramos of North Port, who with her husband, Ron, is celebrating eight years of marriage. “We just love Siesta Key.” Many couples were visiting the Key on vacation and when they heard about the event, they decided to join in. As the sun began to set, Judge Debra Johnes Riva, of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, took the podium and welcomed the couples to the ceremony. Riva then instructed the couples to face each other and to repeat their renewal vows as she read them aloud. She closed out the event by quoting the moving words of A.A. Milne, author of The Complete Tales of Winnie-the- Pooh, instructing the couples to consider these words of love: “lf you live to be a hundred, I want to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” Amidst more than a few tears and hugs, the couples sealed their vows with a kiss.

Getting Your Phil

Best deterrent against crime on the Key costs nothing W

hile most things change, some solid ideas remain steadfastly resolute. That is the case here. Many years ago, for several years, I covered Siesta Key’s police beat for the Pelican Press. And the best advice cops gave back then to avoid becoming a victim of theft is what they are still saying today. This is especially true in beach communities where there are guaranteed to be a plethora of unattended vehicles: Lock your doors! The easiest way to alter behavior is to create a new, in this case good, habit. Regardless of whether you are entering or exiting your vehicle or home, lock the door once you pass through it. Do this for a few weeks, and before you know it, it will become second nature. Once you develop the habit,

Annexation

you won’t have to think about it. It’s free, and it remains the easiest, best way for you to prevent being burglarized. Also, police warn against leaving valuables in your vehicle. If you have no choice, make sure they are out of sight in the trunk. And again, lock your doors! Most would-be thieves move quickly from vehicle to vehicle, or house to house, until they find one that is unlocked. Take it back, Texas! Does Siesta Key feel more humid overall to you than it used to? It may not be your imagination. A recent weather study confirms that Florida is indeed growing more muggy. In fact, according to the study, it’s now listed as the muggiest place in the United States, a dubious honor that had historically been bestowed alternately upon Louisiana and Texas.

The study was conducted by HouseFresh, a home product evaluation company. It found that Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg were the two most humid U.S. cities, while North Port was listed fourth. According to the analysis, the 20 most humid cities in the U.S. are all in Florida -- 17 in southeast Florida, two in Tampa Bay and one in southwest Florida. Using data from the weathertracking website WeatherSpark, the study looks at humidity in Florida in a way that previous studies have not. HouseFresh analyzes the humidity level by measuring dew point temperature, which is the atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form. The dew point determines whether sweat is able to evaporate from the skin, cooling the body. Higher dew points feel more humid, lower dew points feel drier. Each city’s muggiest day was

broken down into six categories: dry, comfortable, humid, muggy, oppressive and miserable. For more than a third of the muggiest day in Florida, all 20 cities were deemed “miserable.”

alternatives on Siesta Key, including golf carts and the trolley system.

Fill ‘er up … um, halfway The AAA auto club reported in February that gasoline prices have climbed another 12 cents a gallon in Florida, the highest since July 2014. Gas prices in February averaged $3.47 per gallon, according to AAA, up 27 cents from a month earlier and 98 cents from one year ago. In the next few weeks, gas prices are expected to rise another 10 to 15 cents due to rising crude oil prices. Geopolitical tension in eastern Europe along with colder-thanaverage temperatures have conspired to create the rapid increase. Yet another reason to support increased use of transportation

Dog lovers unite Manatee and Sarasota counties have several dog-friendly pubs and restaurants, but soon Sarasota will have a restaurant catering specifically to dogs and their owners. Located in the historic Ice House building on 10th Street in the Rosemary District, just north of downtown Sarasota, Boo’s Ice House & Dog Bar is scheduled to open this summer. According to its website, it will be “Sarasota’s newest place to dine, drink and paw-ty with your pup.” Guests can enjoy beer, wine, spirits and comfort food while watching their pets play in a gated indoor and outdoor area at Boo’s. from a millage standpoint. It looks to me like there’s a lot more in it for them than us.” However, thanks to Siesta Key’s combined assessed property values that are approaching $7 billion, Arroyo reports that the city’s mill rate Arroyo could drop a full point or more if the two entities were to combine through annexation. Still, it’s a far cry from the .25 mills Save Siesta Key was proposing. Plus, however things shake out, the Key will always have to pay county taxes as well. Some, including state Rep. Will Robinson who voted against incorporation, have voiced that

the low millage rate and a plan for only five employees is unrealistic. Sarasota Commissioner Hagen Brody agreed, saying after Arroyo’s presentation on Jan. 18 city that “It takes more than five people to put on this meeting.” The other wild card involves representation. The city is currently under a charter review by a committee that could suggest it have a resident-elected “strong mayor” instead of one that’s chosen each year within the fiveperson commission, thus shuffling the council seats. Arroyo said in January that there’s a chance a seat could be guaranteed for a Siesta Key resident. Currently, Siesta Key’s population of 8,915 represents less than 2% of the county’s population. By joining Sarasota, that would climb to more than 16%. Save Siesta Key members have

said they still don’t see that as sufficient but a commission seat could change minds. All four organizations invited to meet with Arroyo have voiced frustration with decisions made at the county level. Among them, besides the hotels, are the approval of the Siesta Promenade project at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road, as well as the dredging of Big Pass in order to provide sand to Lido Key. As for annexation, the process requires two public hearings and a referendum that either involves residents of just the entity pursuing the annexation of another, or one that involves both entities. Sarasota commissioners said at the Jan. 18 meeting that they would think the best approach, if it gets to that point, would be to include Siesta Key voters.

month journey toward hoping to have its bill reach the Florida Legislature. Arroyo put the matter on his city agenda less than 72 hours after that fateful vote. But it was state Rep. Fiona McFarland, who is part of the state delegation and represents most of the Key with her territory, who first suggested last fall that Siesta Key consider joining the city before rolling the dice with incorporation. She pointed to the fact that Siesta Key already has several hundred residents in its norther portion -primarily on and near Bay Island -- that already is part of the city. She would later agree to endorse the bill if it reached Tallahassee and voted in favor of it in a losing cause. So, now Save Siesta Key will have to wait until August to resubmit an application, which it has said it plans to do.

After the meeting with Arroyo and Brown, Hensey, who is the new chairman of Save Siesta Key, said “The initial meeting was very preliminary. I think that both parties would describe the meeting as a productive discussion. We focused more on concept versus details.” The nitty gritty that will likely shape future discussions centers around taxes -- Save Siesta Key proposed a .25 mill rate to start its own government, costing residents of a median home (assessed value of about $440,000) just shy of $100 annually. Meanwhile, the millage rate in the city of Sarasota is 3.13. “We’ll be doing a lot of listening, and we’ll have an open mind,” said Hensey of the invite when speaking to the Siesta Key Association on Feb. 3. “But I can’t see joining with the city can work

Arts on the Horizon By Rodger Skidmore Go-Go, Van Gogh

Y

ou already know the answer to the question, “Who has played Vincent Van Gogh in the movies?” -- Kirk Douglas, Martin Scorsese, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Willem Dafoe, as well as a lot of other actors of whom you might not have heard (like the French actor/singer Jacques Dutronc -- best known as a singer of garage rock and psychedelic rock). What united all these actors? -- the fact that they often play mentally (and otherwise) tortured people. And Van Gogh certainly was that. Son of an evangelical preacher, Van Gogh became an evangelical preacher. A failed art dealer in London, he became (at the urging of his brother Theo) a failed artist. Often described as suffering from severe depression, it seems more likely he was schizophrenic. He certainly was depressed, but must have had great highs, given that he painted such joyous masterpieces as Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night, and so many portraits of bright yellow sunflowers and fields of wheat. Although, it must be admitted that his painting Wheatfield with Crows is pretty ominous. Yet, perhaps the crows are simply coming for the wheat, and not for us. Van Gogh created about 900 oil paintings in the nine years that he was active, mostly

done in the last two years of his life. Perhaps one can produce more paintings by using aggressively broad brushstrokes. And doing so adds a tremendous amount of vitality, more than one finds in the landscapes done by earlier artists. Van Gogh’s painting Café Terrace at Nightlives is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but like many snowbirds, it will be visiting Sarasota -- March 4 through April 24. The venue is the Starry Night Pavilion at University Town Center, south of the mall. And it will be bringing many friends as well -- watercolors and drawings in addition to Van Gogh’s more famous oil paintings. Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience will be immersing you in more than 300 works of Van Gogh’s art. And immersion is the word. This is not your normal museum tour where you walk past a series of paintings. Here the art does not just stay on the walls, it moves and changes, grows and becomes alive. Van Gogh sold one painting during his short life and now they go for $20 to $100 million. Owning one of his paintings is a great financial investment, as will be the time you invest in seeing his art as its never been seen before. Info at Vangoghsarasota.com.

Duality

Pick up a shiny new twentyfive-cent piece (one of those metal ones that existed before that imaginary stuff, like Bitcoin, came along). There are images on both sides that are quite different -- usually a portrait on one side and a building on the other. The quarter is a metaphor for life -- the yin and yang of existence -- the transitory and the permanent. But metaphysical dualism can go beyond that. Yes, the building is more permanent than the individual that is portrayed, but memory can be kept alive forever and buildings can be leveled is a few years. This leads, of course, to Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith, and to the garden setting in which they appear. Mapplethorpe had his own duality: known by many

chiefly for his photographs of the male body, which can exhibit the same sensuous curves as that of the female, he was equally appreciated for his portraits. Especially his portraits of flowers. Flowers, growing on a hillside, petals trembling in the breeze, are always beautiful because you see them and leave. They exist in a permanent state of youthful beauty as long as that seeing mind exists. Cut flowers are usually viewed and appreciated at their peak, and then wither and die. Mapplethorpe, for the most part, only photographed cut flowers. But by photographing them, made them even more permanent than the memories of the ones growing on that hill. Patti Smith grew up as a tomboy, but later found her sensual side, partnering for a while with Mapplethorpe, until he found his own sensuality. Moving to New York to become a performance poet, she evolved from being a spoken-word artist into a songwriter, and finally a singer-songwriter. Before the 20th century, poets were remembered, if at all, by their work on paper. Ms. Smith, thanks to recordings (like Mapplethorpe’s photography), become immortal. Both artists are on display at Selby Gardens -- in the orchid conservatory and spotted about acres of downtown’s outdoor splendor. Patti’s writings are signposted along garden paths and her voice subtly follows you while looking at Mapplethorpe’s portraits of flowers in the conservatory. Actually not “his” portraits, as the Selby does not cut their flowers in these arrangements, but instead has potted them as beautifully as Mapplethorpe’s, when he put his in vases. His actual photographs are on display in the Payne Mansion amongst photos of Smith and Mapplethorpe together. This particular display of photos, recordings, and flowers titled Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith/Flowers, Poetry, and Light will be at Selby Gardens forever -- or until June 26 -whichever comes first. More info at Selby.org.

They will also have their own set on Saturday night. Wednesday’s first set features guitarist John Piazzarelli and song stylist Catherine Russell performing a tribute to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. They are followed by perennial favorite Houston Person playing tenor sax playing accompanied by Ken Peplowski and the La Lucha rhythm section. Dick Hyman and Ken Peplowski will be together again, and not for the first time, on Thursday. Another Thursday set will be led by trumpet virtuoso Terell Stafford. Look ahead. If you fall in, that’s OK. Don’t panic.” He then explained how to get back on the board when the inevitable happens and you fall in: • Hang onto your paddle. • If you lose the paddle, get back on the board first. • To get back on, grab the paddle handle in the center of the board. • Kick your legs and pull yourself up on the side of the board. • Once you’re on the board, get to a kneeling position and then stand up again.” He explained that it’s also important to have a good understanding of the paddle: • Keep your hand at the top of the paddle. • Move the paddle from the front toward your ankle, pushing down as though the board is moving past the paddle. • Alternate. Paddle for three strokes on the right and then three strokes on the left. • If you’re finding it hard to paddle, move to a kneeling or sitting position and take nice big paddles. With our lesson complete, we learned that the fun part begins out on the water.

In coastal areas of the southeastern United States, anhingas live year-round from North Carolina to Florida to Texas. They prefer lakes, marshes, lagoons, and mangrove swamps thick with tall trees and lush vegetation — near either fresh or saltwater. In the fork of a tree overhanging the water, anhinga pairs build platform nests out of sticks. Both parents incubate the clutch of two to five eggs for about 30 days. Hatchlings are completely helpless and dependent on the parents while being brooded for their first 12 days. Chicks are nestbound for about three weeks until they first climb out and explore the

Anhinga chicks fledge at six weeks, staying with their parents for several more weeks prior to becoming independent. Even without their trademark black and white wings, these downy youngsters show off the head and neck profile that gives the Anhinga its infamous nickname, “the snakebird.” Jan Baumgartner’s handmade notecards are available at BLVD Beachwear, 5239 Ocean Blvd., and Shelly’s Gift and Christmas Boutique, 4420 S. respect my duty to enforce the law ... all we need is one honest, hard-working person to turn this thing around. “That person is me. Let’s get together. Let’s get to work.” With another effort at hand, Costentino said he’s better situated for a successful campaign when compared to four years ago. “My goal was to get the charter amendments passed,” he said of 2018. “I’m told what’s needed is to be on the (Sarasota Herald-Tribune) front page, above the fold. By jumping in the race, l got the amendments on the front page, above the fold, four times in three months. The measures passed with 67% and 73%, respectively. “But I was crushed by Wesley Beggs in the Democratic primary. Frankly, she outworked me. While I was at my desk writing legal briefs for Beach Road, she was pounding the pavement for votes. “I’ve learned from that mistake. I believe our voters have learned, too. Al Maio, perhaps the worst public official in Sarasota’s history, was re-elected in 2018 despite his numerous controversial landuse approvals. “Necessarily, l think our voters are paying much closer attention now. That hurts my opponents and bodes very well for me.” The annual salary for a Sarasota County Commissioner is $88.000. They are elected to four-year terms.

Restroom facility to be built at Nora Patterson Bay Island Park A restroom building will be constructed at the south part of Nora Patterson Bay Island Park, near the north bridge, on Siesta Drive. A groundbreaking took place Feb. 16. The building will also feature an observation deck and storage area. The Sarasota County Board of Commissioners signed off on the project in January, to the tune of an estimated $927,740, with a completion goal of August. Costs will be split between the city of Sarasota and the county. The park was given its name in 2015 in tribute to Patterson, a former county commissioner.

Pedestrian bridge will go over creek Sarasota County, as part of the ongoing expansion of the Legacy Trail, plans to construct a pedestrian bridge which will allow walkers and bicyclists to cross Phillippi Creek just north of Bahia Vista Street. The county expects to award a contract for the project in March and to complete it by September. The Sarasota County Commission has approved a sovereignty submerged lands easement with the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund of the state of Florida, solely for the construction of a pedestrian bridge crossing on a nearly 600-square-foot parcel of sovereignty submerged land located within Phillippi Creek, for a 50-year period. This part of the Legacy Trail expansion, known as Phase 2, goes to Payne Park in downtown Sarasota. -- Phil Colpas

Calming Your Canine:

Causes and Remedies for Your Dog’s Anxiety

Paw Pals

Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect Got anxiety? Your pup just might be experiencing it too. Like humans, dogs can get anxious from time to time. From loud noises and unusual circumstances, to strange places and unfamiliar people or animals, dogs often experience anxiety as a result of fear or separation. While unpleasant, it’s pretty common. However, if left unchecked, a little anxiety here and there can grow into something worse and lead to your dog suffering from an anxiety disorder. Here are a few regular contributors to canine anxiety, and how you can mitigate or prevent their effects on your pup’s mental and emotional well-being. Anxiety Accelerators New Surroundings – For most puppies, leaving their mother and littermates is inevitable. And, as their first major life adjustment, it can be a little traumatizing. One way to help alleviate the initial stress of this transition is to bring along an item from the litter, such as a blanket, to place in their crate. You might also try a Snuggle Puppy, which comes with a real-feel heartbeat and heat pack that can recreate the intimacy and warmth of mama and the litter to help calm your puppy. Loneliness – As pack animals, dogs don’t like being left alone, and too much solo time can result in disruptive or destructive behavior. Obviously, they’re going to face alone time at some point, and fortunately there are ways to address their anxiety that can help them make the most of it. Toys by Kong or puzzle toys offer a welcome distraction when you leave the house, and they can help your dog learn to feel like alone time is a good thing. Another useful approach is to keep your dog active and engaged when you are home with daily walks and play. Interactive games like fetch and tug-o-warhave the most impact, particularly if they take place right before you leave the house. Get their physical and mental juices flowing before you go, and they’ll have little left for worry. Noises – We’ve discussed this before around the summer holidays: loud or sudden noises bring stress to many dogs. Should things get loud like they do during fireworks or thunderstorms, providing safe places for retreat—such as a cozycrate or a quiet room—can help take the edge off. Strangers – Many dogs don’t take well to new people or animals. This stress can

be exacerbated if they sense tension from their pet parents, such as a tightening of the leash. So, try to stay relaxed and positive when your pup is presented with a fresh face. Additionally, you should never force your dog to engage if they’re showing fear. If you know the person, ask them to help put your dog at ease by requesting they avoid eye contact. You can also have them toss a few treats on the ground as a peace offering, allowing them to close the gap as your dog relaxes.

Meet Odin

Anxiety Prevention Now that we’ve covered some of the top causes of canine anxiety, what are some ways to prevent it? This may sound obvious because, well, it is: the best way to prevent anxiety in your dog is to avoid situations that lead to it. Have you identified specific circumstances that elevate stress for your pup? If not, learn your dog’s body language so you can understand what makes them uncomfortable and reduce their exposure as much as possible. Early training and socialization can also help your dog adapt tonew people, places, animals, and experiences, establishing trust in your relationship and familiarizing them with new things to reinforce the idea that change is good. And finally, a good physical and mental exercise routine is crucial for your dog’s emotional development and long-term well-being. Some dogs learn to address their anxiety through behavior management, while others may need additional support in the form of calming therapies or medication. Either way, the important thing is that you not let anxiety or the influences that cause it linger. If you’ve tried the methods above and your dog still isn’t responding to attempts to help them overcome anxiety, consider consulting a trainer, animal behaviorist, or your veterinarian.

rout and redfish should be good shallow-water options this month. You may also find trout along with blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and flounder on deep grass flats. Look for sheepshead, flounder, reds and more around docks. Catch-and-release night snook fishing around lighted docks in the Intracoastal Waterway may be a good option if it’s not too cold. Spanish and king mackerel and cobia may show up in the coastal gulf by the end of the month. Snook and reds remain closed to harvest south of State Road 64 in Manatee County to the south bank of Gordon Pass in Collier County. Reds and snook are catch-and-release-only in that zone until May 31. Spotted seatrout has reopened in that zone with a threefish-per-person bag limit and a six-fish per boat limit. Trout must be from 15 to 19 inches with one allowed per vessel above 19 inches. Full regulations and details can be viewed at myfwc.com. Since snook are temperature sensitive, I won’t target them following strong fronts when water temperatures dip below 60 degrees. However, I have had some great night trips catching and releasing snook on flies in the Intracoastal Waterway at night this time of year. Since larger baitfish aren’t that plentiful this time of year, snook will gorge themselves on glass minnows and shrimp. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, DOA Shrimp, DOA Tiny TerrorEyz, or CAL Jigs with shad tails and jerk worms will all work well. You may also find snook in rivers, creeks or canals this month. Fishing may be good in these areas on a blustery day when it isn’t fit to fish anywhere else. I like wider profile flies and lures in these areas due to the baitfish that may be found there. Fly anglers should score with wide profile baitfish patterns, such as Lefty’s Deceiver, fished on a sink tip fly line. Spin anglers should do well with CAL jigs and 4-inch swim baits and jerk worms, DOA Baitbusters or suspending plugs. Fish the deep spots, usually on outside bends, for the best action. You might find reds in potholes or along the edges of bars and shallow flats when the tide is low. As the tide rises, they will feed higher on shallow flats, particularly on sunny afternoons. I like 1/16-ounce CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms for reds in shallow water. If it is too shallow or grassy to fish an exposed hook, a Mustad or Owner weedless hook will allow you to fish plastic baits in these areas. Fly anglers should score with lightly weighted flies, like Clousers or my Grassett Flats Minnow, with weed guards on floating lines with 10- to 12-foot leaders. You may also find big trout in skinny water in the same places you find reds. The same lures, flies and techniques that you use to target reds will work for big trout in those areas. I release all over-slot trout since they are usually females and I feel that they are important to the health of our trout fishery. Siesta’s Premier Fishing Charter Operation!

“It also states that any developer requesting a special exception for excess height beyond the 35-foot limitation would need to increase setback 1 foot for every 4 feet of excess height requested,” Spiegel added. “Both of these approved hotels should have been required by county development staff to increase setbacks next to residential by 11.25 to 12 feet, respectively, in addition to the 20-foot minimum required for a conforming development.” The Siesta Key Coalition raised this issue multiple times throughout the process. “We raised it to staff during the neighborhood workshops, we reached out to lead development services staff, we requested a meeting with the zoning administrator, wrote emails to both the planning board and the county commissioners, and were quoted in the press,” Spiegel said. “We even presented detailed figures during the hearings, documenting that there was no other logical interpretation of the code, as currently written, than the necessity to increase the setbacks when requesting excessive height.” Other experienced architects and land planning consultants agreed with the Coalition’s position that the intent of the code was clear, and that there was only one logical interpretation, Spiegel said. “The perspective for all of us that repeatedly tried to get them to address this in the early stages of these hotel development applications’ review is that the county planning and zoning staff obviously knew all along that there was only one logical and intended interpretation of this setback code requirement,” Spiegel said. “It is our perspective that person(s) at the county made the decision to not address it then, when it would have had a material feasibility or size impact on the hotel

plans, and instead offered an illogical excuse that it did not specifically say ‘in combination’ with. We begged our representatives to pause before setting such significant precedents and allowing developers with 1 acre of land to exceed our existing codes and policies so egregiously. “With or without the word ‘additional,’ the existing intent of the code has always been clear, and only has one logical interpretation, and should have been honored when it protected the interests of the citizens of Siesta Key.” Longtime Siesta Key resident and activist Lourdes Ramirez was first to file suit against one of the approved hotels in November, contending the county did not have the authority to grant exceptions that violated the county’s comprehensive plan, which capped the number of rooms at 26 per acre of property on the barrier islands; and that this added density will also cause traffic and safety problems. She is fighting construction of the proposed eight-story, 170-room hotel to be built between Beach Road and Calle Miramar in Siesta Village. Her trial is slated to begin March 27, 2023. Another concerned longtime resident, James Wallace, also filed suit in November. His case targets both the 170-room Siesta Village hotel and Dr. Gary Kompothecras’ 120-room hotel and parking garage project at Old Stickney Point and Peacock roads. In his complaint, Wallace alleges that the county commissioners acted illegally and in violation of their own procedures by adopting the Land Development Code changes without first amending their Comprehensive Plan policy which limits hotel room density to a 26 units per acre maximum on Siesta Key. His trial is scheduled to begin in May 2023.

New, high-density hotels were approved by Sarasota County late last year at Calle Miramar (above) and Old Stickney Point Road (right). (file photos)

Photos by Trebor Britt

“Siesta Sculptors” -- From left, Ryan Callen, Mike Mokhiber, Rick Kindzia, Lynsey Ross, TJ Difrancesco, and Nikki Mokhiber, all of Buffalo, proudly pose next to their gator sand sculpture. They were among a family of 21 on vacation from the cold. Mokhiber revealed she has always wanted to be the driver of the Weinermobile -- a motor vehicle shaped like a hotdog on a bun used to promote Oscar Mayer products in the United States.

“Key Beverages” -- Jolynn Salo, a Brooklyn, Michigan transplant who bartends at the Crescent Club, adds a little flare and juice to a Siesta Key Rum specialty drink. Among Salo’s favorite things to do are hang out with her cocker spaniel, watch reruns of her favorite movie “Forest Gump,” and dance the night away at a local club.

“Just the two of us“ --First-timers Catherine Choppa of Milwaukee and Joel Irwin of Madison enjoy the warm sun on the beach. Choppa is exploring Sarasota, Siesta and Lido for a possible relocation. Irwin retired from the American Girl mail-order catalog company.

“Shoreline Walk” -- Antique dealers and partners Kaleen Suter and Zach Capps of Allentown, Pennsylvania stroll the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Although their store shut down during the pandemic, internet sales spiked enough to sustain them. Kaleen commented, “A lot of people stuck at home decided to change or upgrade their furnishings.” These first-time visitors were antique picking in another part of Florida when they heard about Siesta Beach.

“Beach Amigos“ -- First-timers (from left) Jack, 4, Luke, 6, and Cade, 3 are brothers from Sarnia, Ontario and were loving their month-long family getaway from all the cold weather and COVID-19 restrictions. They heard about Siesta Beach from family members who visited here two years ago.

“Siesta Birthday” -- It was an easy decision for first-timer Nicole Casper of York, Pennslyvania when she was asked by her BFF to spend her 52nd birthday on one of the top beaches in America. Sipping on pino grigio and enjoying retirement, she works part time for a sunglasses retail store. She was proud to share that her oldest son recently finished 18th in the nation at the track and field Olympic trials in the shot put.

“Racing the Waves” -- Joyful Hailee, 5, of Connecticut races the mild gulf waves to the shoreline. The family decided it was time to escape from all the snow and cold and take a break from work. Hailee’s father works as a school bus mechanic.

“Advanced Training”-- A beach lieutenant and EMT, lifeguard Robert Martini continues to keep the public safe after 20 years on the beach. Martini now stands among Sarasota’s most qualified servants after completion of an extensive 14-month Academy Leadership Excellence Course.

“Fishing Trio“ -- From left, fishing friends Bob Kirker of State College, Pennsylvania and Sarasota residents Paul Zeppenfeld and Tom Caffrey enjoy ice-cold beverages at the Boatyard Waterfront Bar and Grill after a day on the water. They are members of the Waves boat and social club. They agreed that redfish and snook are they’re favorite catches.

“Siesta Shopping” -- Brock Hadachek and Jenna Moody of Iowa wait on a pickup after shopping for their vacation at Morton’s Siesta Market. After enduring a recent blizzard, the family planned a getaway to escape the cold weather. Brock is finishing a digital-media degree at the University of Northern Iowa and Jenna manages a luxury-active-wear store.

Hensey at the helm residents are registered voters. “We let off the gas pedal on that,” he said. However, state Rep. Tommy Gregory said after his no vote that he’d like to see petitions from at least 50 percent if Save Siesta Key were to try again. In previous conversation with all six members of the delegation, Hensey said that goal was never mentioned. In fact, few suggestions were made at all. “They came back and threw it in our face,” Hensey said of the petition numbers. As for the feasibility study that produced a modest .25 mill rate and a $3.75 million budget, it received criticism of being too low by state Rep. Will Robinson. While it will get another look, Hensey said he and his group stand behind the numbers -- especially knowing the Key has nearly a combined $7 billion in assessed property values that continues to rise, indicating that ad valorem tax collections will remain plentiful.

At that .25 mill rate, the owner of a median Siesta Key home ($440,062 in assessed value) would pay an additional $96.75 in taxes per year. Robinson also questioned the lack of projected employees, which Save Siesta Key had at five with a town manager, planner, clerk, code enforcement officer, and administrative worker. The manger salary was estimated at $180,000, which Robinson feared was too low. Hensey said he researched the average salary of the manager of a Florida municipality, which came to $84,000. Hensey, who has recently scaled back his duties as the manager of the country’s fifth-largest construction firm, has lived on Siesta key for 14 years. As chairman he replaces John Davidson, who remains on the board. It was Davidson who spearheaded an incorporation effort in the mid-’90s before dropping his efforts when county officials offered more support. Recent county decisions fueled his desire to start another effort last March, including the approval of the Siesta Promenade project at the corner of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road, as well as the dredging on Big Pass to the Key’s north in order to provide sand to Lido Beach. The county’s approval of two large hotels, with two more waiting in the wings, further put the incorporation effort on the fast track. Meanwhile, Save Siesta Key’s board has seen a few departures, as members Harry Anand, Lisa Choate and Chuck Byrne and stepped down. Interviews are taking place for replacements, member Tracy Jackson reports. Anand, a former mayor of a township on Long Island, was a leading figure during the first wave of the incorporation effort. His ability to interact with the delegation and get it to first attend a December town hall meeting on the Key, and then vote soon thereafter, was notable. “We owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” Jackson said. “Without him, we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are. We wouldn’t have gotten that meeting or that Jan. 4 vote.” The board now consists of Hensey, Jackson, Davidson, Tierney, and Steve Lexow.

Tracy Jackson Continued from page 18

Save Siesta Key were sown. She bounced ideas off of Mark Spiegel, president for the Siesta Key Coalition. A board began to take shape. “We, like many others, had had the same experience: We had fallen in love with the island. We wanted to live here,” she said. Chancellor finally lost his battle with cancer on Dec. 29, 2019 -- less than a month before Jackson’s final radiation treatment. Her voice still cracks at his memory. “We went through cancer together,” she said. Since then, it seems, no obstacle is insurmountable. Jackson led a Save Siesta Key march just two days before undergoing meniscus surgery on both knees. The day after surgery, she was one of the last people to speak at a vital town hall meeting. “I went. I was miserable,” she laughed. “My pain was at an 11. But I wanted to thank people for showing up.” The failure to advance incorporation to the state legislature (the result of a Jan. 4 Sarasota County Legislative Delegation vote) was just one more bump in Jackson’s journey, as far as she’s concerned. And while others say it’s Jackson’s innate positivity and resilience that fuel any cause she puts her mind to, she credits the ongoing outpouring of support from the community for keeping her as inspired as ever. “I never wanted to be the face of this movement. It just kind of happened that way. It’s so moving and humbling,” she said. “I’ve had a great life story, and this is a highlight of it.”

Key Employee

Dana

As a resident of Peppertree Bay on Siesta Key, Dana used to bike to the Crescent Club at night and enjoy the socializing. She also liked the atmosphere. “It just seemed like a fun environment,” she said, “and I saw how much the people enjoyed working here.” So, four years ago she applied as a bartender and the rest is history. “I had never bartended before. They took a chance on me,” Dana said. “But I got the hang of it and now I get so much joy out of interacting with my customers -- especially the regulars. They always make my day.” Photos by John Morton (To nominate a Siesta Key employee worthy of recognition, email: info@27statemedia.com.)

Sun Garden Cafe recognizes the impact that quality workers can have on a business, and is proud to sponsor the Key Employee each month.

Congratulations, Dana! Your dedication has resulted in a gift certificate for breakfast for four at Sun Garden Cafe, located at 210 Avenida Madera in the Village.
