Senior Dogs and Pain Management By Rachael Lau, DVM
As our pets enter their senior years, much of their veterinary care focuses on using laboratory values to monitor changes in kidney function, liver health, and urine changes. Equally important, are changes in mobility and comfort. More than 80% of dogs over age 8 show signs of arthritis. “Slowing down with age” is often a sign of chronic pain. Take our 15-year-old patient, Charlie, for example. Charlie benefits from a multimodal pain management plan tailored to his individual needs. Because he has kidney disease, medications such as NSAIDs—which can further affect kidney function—are not a safe option. Instead, we rely on therapies that effectively relieve his pain while protecting his overall health. Charlie’s treatment plan includes: • Librela,® a monthly injection that targets arthritis pain. • Therapeutic laser therapy, which uses light energy to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and promote healing while relieving pain.

y name is Kiowa (Khoiye) derived from the Native American Indian - Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and I live in Waikiki. I was born in Mililani on March 4, 2024. My two favorite humans are Shawn and Kelly, who love me unconditionally. Most of my canine friends at the Ala Wai Dog Park call me a Shiba Diva, because I love showing off the latest canine fashions. My favorite hobbies include cruising in the car(always wear my seat belt), playing in the sand on the beach and hanging with my besties at the park. nuggets In May, 2026, the Grand Canyon National Park hired its first Conservation K-9. Blue, an 18-month-old Catahoula Leopard Dog will serve to scare habituated elk and bighorn sheep away from the high-traffic South Rim tourist areas and back to natural habitats. Working with wildlife biologist Brady Dunne, Blue employs controlled barking and herding pressure to train wild hoofers away from areas packed with visitors. The Catahoula Leopard Dog is bred to hunt, herd livestock and guard property. They can chase and control large animals like feral hogs and cattle. Blue’s training began with sessions in Montana with Wind River Canine Partners, followed by more than thirty specialized livestock-herding sessions with Arizona trainer Molly Wisecarver. According to Dunne, Blue emerged from training with “excellent responsiveness, focus, and pressure‑control skills.”

Blue’s significant stature, though not that of a wolf, is enough to provoke fear in elk. When working, she remains leashed, and applies pressure without engaging in an active chase. Elk and bighorn sheep are also being fitted with GPS collars to track movement and gather data on how they are influenced by Blue’s herding technique.

Bobbie the Wonder Dog Bobbie was a Scotch Collie mix who belonged to the Brazier family from Silverton, Oregon. In August 1923, while on a family trip in Wilcott, Indiana, Bobbie was chased by several dogs at a gas station stop and never returned. The family searched in vain for days, but eventually gave up and returned to Oregon.

Months later, on February 15, 1924, in the dead of winter, an emaciated limping dog appeared at the Brazier’s doorstep. It was Bobbie. He had journeyed over 2,500 miles across rivers, plains and the snow-capped Rocky Mountains to find his way home to Silverton. The Humane Society of Portland corroborated his journey by gathering encounters shared by kind strangers who fed and cared for the stray dog along his trek. Bobbie somehow followed his family’s travel in Indiana, seeking their scent. The Braziers had parked their car in a service station each night. Bobbie visited each of these stops on his journey and kept heading west. Bobbie enjoyed local and global fame after his return and was featured in “Ripley’s Believe or Not.” Upon passing in 1927, he was buried at the Oregon Humane Society Pet Cemetery.

Case Study: Finding Confidence Again Behavior is rarely random. By understanding what a dog has experienced, we can create a plan that addresses the cause rather than simply managing the symptoms.
PATIENT: “Maui” — 4-year-old rescue Pit Bull SYMPTOMS: Maui, who is completely deaf, became increasingly nervous and withdrawn after losing his closest canine companion. As his confidence declined, another dog in the household began repeatedly targeting and attacking him, creating an unsafe and stressful home environment for both the dogs and their owner. DIAGNOSIS: A multi-dog household can be rewarding, but when one member of the pack passes away, the social dynamics often change dramatically. Maui’s history made him particularly vulnerable. Before being rescued, he had been used as a “bait dog” in a local dog fighting operation. His teeth had been filed down so he couldn’t defend himself against the fighting dogs. Despite everything he endured, he remained one of the sweetest, most affectionate dogs I’ve ever met. After his rescue, Maui formed a close bond with an older, confident dog in the home who became his source of security, helping him navigate the world despite his deafness and traumatic past. When that dog passed away, Maui lost more than just a friend. Totally deaf, with no effective way to communicate with dogs or people, and a lifetime of learned helplessness, Maui became increasingly uncertain and submissive. Another dog in the household, Mano, began challenging and attacking him as an attempt to establish his position within the shifting pack structure. Although Maui was physically larger and stronger, his vulnerability and lack of confidence made him the perceived weakest member. SOLUTION: Our first priority after the in-home evaluation was safety. We acclimated Mano to wearing a basket muzzle and established a management plan using baby gates to create
safe, structured separation within the home while preventing further fights. Once everyone was safe, we helped Maui regain confidence. With a vibration-only remote collar, he learned that a gentle vibration meant, “Look to your owner.” We developed a sign-language system, giving him a clear and reliable way to understand guidance despite being completely deaf. As Maui’s ability to communicate improved, so did his confidence. We coached the owners on canine body language, supervising interactions, and reinforcing appropriate social behaviors. As Maui became more confident and Mano learned more suitable ways to coexist, tensions gradually disappeared. Today, Maui and Mano comfortably share the home together, with no muzzles required. CLOSING: Problems in multi-dog households are often the result of changing relationships, communication breakdowns, or past experiences—not simply “dominance” or a bad temperament. Whether you’re introducing a new dog, navigating changing pack dynamics, or dealing with conflict between dogs already living together, understanding why the behavior is occurring is the first step toward lasting success. Our goal isn’t simply to stop unwanted behaviors—it’s to help dogs and their owners communicate more clearly so everyone can live together safely and confidently.

Veterinary Dermatology Veterinarians who specialize in dermatology often work alongside your primary care veterinarian to develop a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s individual needs. Because Hawaii’s climate remains relatively consistent year-round, allergic skin conditions can occur at any time of the year. These signs commonly develop after a pet relocates to the islands from overseas. Every pet responds differently to treatment, so an individualized approach provides the best opportunity for successful long-term management of allergic skin disease. Veterinary dermatologists do more than diagnose and treat skin allergies. They can also provide venom immunotherapy to help desensitize pets with severe allergic reactions to insect stings and reduce the risk of life-threatening anaphylaxis. If your pet has experienced a life-threatening reaction to a sting from a yellow jacket, honey bee, or wasp, a veterinary dermatologist can help determine whether
venom immunotherapy is appropriate. Similar to environmental allergy testing, they can identify the specific insect venoms involved and develop a customized desensitization protocol to reduce the risk of severe reactions. This therapy can significantly improve patient safety, reduce the likelihood of future life-threatening reactions, and decrease the need for emergency veterinary care following insect stings. y 7 am on Saturday, October 24, Kapiolani Regional Park will be full of happy tail wags, laughter and families staking out a patch of shade. More than 1,000 pets and their people turn out for this every year, and it is one of the few mornings dogs are welcome in the park. The event is PetWalk: A Josie’s ‘Ohana Event, now in its 36th year. The Hawaiian Humane Society runs it from 7 am to noon, with the walk and all the festivities centered around the Bandstand at 2840 Paki Ave. Dogs make up the overwhelming majority of the crowd, but the invitation is open to pets of all kinds. Last year’s walk included a mini pig and a parakeet. Past years have brought rabbits, guinea pigs and cats. If your family pet travels well and isn’t stressed about the festivities, they are welcome to come along. PetWalk is the largest pet-friendly outdoor gathering on Oahu. The morning opens with a stretch led by the team at StretchLab, which is worth doing before 1.8 miles alongside a dog who has been waiting all week to go somewhere new. Walkers take the loop around the park at their own pace. Also offered this year is the Senior Stroll, a shorter, gentler option created with kupuna in mind, whether that means the humans or the gray-muzzled dogs who have earned the right to take their time. After the walk, head to the pet expo around the Bandstand, where there are pet-friendly products, ono grinds and community partners. Dogs available for adoption will be there too, if you’ve been considering adding a furry family member to your pack. The costume contest draws the biggest crowd of the morning. Entries have gotten more ambitious over the years, and there are categories for pets and
people both, so a well-coordinated pair or group has a real shot. Thanks to Pet Hospitals of Hawaii’s generous support, adoption fees will be sponsored for every pet adopted at PetWalk and throughout the weekend at Hawaiian Humane’s Moiliili and Kosasa Family campuses. For anyone who has been thinking about adopting, that weekend is a good one to visit. More than 13,000 animals come into Hawaiian Humane’s care each year. Many are strays whose families are still looking for them. Others arrive needing

a microchip that gets a lost dog home, or a spay/neuter surgery. It helps support the Field Operations and Response team that answers calls across the island, and it supports the humane education programs that bring animal welfare into classrooms and community groups. The less visible piece is the community outreach work. Hawaiian Humane runs programs designed to reach people where they are, so that a family facing a hard stretch does not have to surrender an animal they love. That can mean access to affordable veterinary care, help with pet food, or support finding housing that allows pets. Every animal who stays home because of that help is one who never needs a kennel. This year’s event is presented with the generous support of Josie’s ‘Ohana, whose gift helps sustain the care and community programs Hawaiian Humane provides across Oahu. Supporters can register as a Lazy Dog or Sleepy Cat for $35 and fundraise from home without setting an early alarm. Thirty-six years in, PetWalk has become an event people plan their October around. I
adopted Alfie from the Hawaiian Humane Society on Oahu at the age of eight. He was simply the best from the beginning; he stayed by my side, he listened, he was a great walking and hiking partner and we had so much fun at the beach alone and with our

doggy friends. I never had to worry about him running off or disappearing and he was oh so gentle—I trusted him completely
from the start. He never even barked; I think I heard him bark a handful of times in addition to the times when I would ask him to speak for a treat. He would ride on my lap while I drove to the beach or the park, even though he was over 40 lb and probably too big to do that. He loved meeting other doggos, especially the girl pups, and made lots of friends on our daily walks. Ginger, my first cat, instantly recognized him as a gentle soul and I’d usually catch them napping together. He was so patient with all of my photo shoots, and all the costumes, and he was quite the character and actor. He was the cover dog for the Humane Society calendar, graced the cover of Island Dog Magazine, and was a model for the White Sands Hotel and Surf Jack Hotel. I don’t know if we made all the right decisions with his
health and care. When he didn’t respond to his doggy friends or any of the simple pleasures that used to get him excited, I knew that he wasn’t happy, or really with us anymore. His doggy dementia got worse, his hind legs would give out more everyday, and there was just not much quality left anymore to his days. It’s one of the greatest responsibilities we have as pet parents and it’s the hardest decision to make. He was in pain but he suffered in silence because he was so stoic and persistent. It was hard to know if we were actually keeping him comfortable. Adopting a senior dog is all about quality of time, not quantity. These past six years with Alfie have been wonderful. He gave me a lifetime of happiness, and never failed to show me love. He is, and always will be, my bestest buddy.

Hawaii’s high temperatures are a yearly hazard for our dogs, especially those who haven’t had time to acclimatize to our weather, have short snouts, or breathing issues, or are overweight. Humans cool down by sweating, but dogs primarily regulate their temperature through panting. Heat stroke is a dangerous spike in body temperature that can occur when the air is too hot or humid, or panting isn’t enough. Signs include: • Heavy, frantic panting or gasping for air • Bright red or purple gums • Lethargy, lack of coordination, or collapse • Bruising of the gums, inner ears, or belly Never leave your dog in a hot car! • Vomiting or diarrhea If you suspect heat stroke, move to a cool area immediately! Offer water, apply tepid (not ice-cold) water to their fur, and bring them to the nearest emergency veterinarian! When bodies get too hot, organs get cooked. This can lead to organ damage, internal bleeding, seizures, coma and even death. Treatment requires emergent cooling, blood sugar supplementation, intravenous fluids, medications, bloodwork monitoring, and sometimes plasma transfusions. Prevention is always better than a medical emergency. To keep your dog safe: Limit Exercise: Walk your dog during the coolest parts of the day—early morning or late evening, avoid strenuous or long play sessions when it is hot out. The Five Second Rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold for five seconds, it’s too hot for paws. Water: Always provide access to fresh, cool water, both indoors and during walks. Never Leave a Dog in a Car or Enclosed Space: Even with windows cracked, a car’s interior can reach 100° in minutes. Provide Shade: Ensure outdoor dogs have a well-ventilated, shaded retreat away from direct sunlight. If your dog is showing signs of heat stroke, our emergency department is open 24/7!
