• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

Clever marketing tactics attracted visitors from all over the country to our previously sleepy shores. But across the bridge in Bluffton, it was a different story. Residents intent on keeping their way of life declared, “Bluffton is a State of Mind,” and resisted the influx of new development. The result of their efforts was that the Historical District remained intact. In 1995 the Bluffton Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places under Criteria A and C. So what is this State of Mind?
On your first stop in Bluffton discover the May River at the Calhoun Street dock and the majestic Church of the Cross. This area has been the gateway to Bluffton since 1850. At this time the town was growing fast and steamboats were transporting crops and goods to Savannah, where they were distributed throughout the region. This is also where, in 1863, Union troops stationed on Hilton Head invaded Bluffton and burned the majority of the town. Only 15 houses and two churches were saved.
Walk down Calhoun and hang a left on Bridge Street, go a couple of blocks, over the Huger spring, and you will be in the Old Oyster Factory Park. The Oyster Factory has a rich history you should take the time to learn about, but so too does the unassuming little shack in the corner of the property. This is the Garvin House, built in 1870. After the Battle of Port Royal in 1861 and the
Burning of Bluffton in 1863, slaves in this area were expressly freed. Slaves from nearby plantations ran away to join burgeoning free black communities. Cyrus Garvin was one such freed slave, formerly of the Baynard Plantation on Hilton Head, and he built his modest home from remains of buildings burned in the invasion of Bluffton. This home is the first, and only remaining, freed slave dwelling on the May River.
Find your way back to Calhoun Street and walk away from the water, past the beautiful Seven Oaks House, eclectic shops and artists’ studios. At the corner of Calhoun and Church streets sits the huge Patz Brothers house. The brothers moved from Baltimore in 1892 to start their shop, The Planters Mercantile. The Seven Oaks House was built the following year. The Patz brothers, like many other Jewish families, moved from Northern urban areas into the post Civil War South. The store remained in the family until 1972, when Morris Robinowich closed down the shop and opened Morris Garage, which still operates today in Bluffton.
At the next intersection, where Bridge and Boundary Streets meet, was an important center of town for Old Bluffton. On one corner sits the Heyward House, one of the homes saved from the burning of Bluffton. It now houses the Bluffton Visitors Center and Historical Preservation Society.
Bluffton is truly a one of a kind place that offers endless experiences exploring history, shopping, dining and engaging in outdoor activities. It is both a great place to live and an endlessly satisfying place to live.

My Pro Golf Buddies Just Reminded Me Why I Love This Game! Let Me Use This Moment to Inspire You!
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Ya know… Every now and then, something happens that makes you pause, smile, and feel truly seen. For me, that moment came when Golf Digest ranked me among the “Best Teachers in South Carolina,” as voted on by my peers.
That pat on the back means a lot — not just because it’s an honor, but because it reminds me why I love this game so much. Golf has given me a lifelong journey of learning, evolving, and sharing. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being passionate.
At Palmetto Dunes, I get to do what I love every day! I help golfers — from brand-new beginners to seasoned players — discover what works for them. I teach what I practice myself: updating technique, embracing a natural, athletic swing, and learning how to compete with joy and confidence.
I’m also blessed to lead a team of incredible PGA professionals with over 200 years of combined teaching experience. We don’t just instruct. We connect! We listen. We tailor each lesson so it fits YOU!
Want to rekindle your love of golf? Or are you curious about where to start? Join me at our Free Monday Golf Clinic at the Palmetto Dunes Toptracer Range. Let’s take your next step together.
Because sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement to spark something great.
North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday at 4 p.m. atthe Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. By Capt. Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters
Fall is a special time here in the Lowountry for many reasons: the weather is better, the crowds are thinner… and the bull redfish swarm inshore waters.
The bulls, ranging from 20 pounds upwards to the 50-pound mark, are here or offshore all year. However, at this time of year, they come close in big numbers, with catches of 20 or more fish in a trip not at all uncommon.
The strength of these fish is incredible, rivaling any other fish of its size, short of an amberjack or tuna. I usually fish heavy spinning reels with 50-pound braid and, even with a heavy drag, they will strip a line off at an alarming pace. Incredibly, they often do it several times in a battle.
I have fished lighter tackle, but the lengthy battle takes a toll on these big fish and they must be released. The law requires that everything over 23 inches must be returned to the water.
The smaller redfish also invade the creeks this time of year, offering the best light tackle sport available. Shrimp (live or dead), cut mullet and menhaden all are favorite baits when fishing inshore.
The “slot” or keeper size is 15 to 23 inches and, by South Carolina law, you may keep three fish per person. Redfish are not only a

blast to catch, they also taste great. Before Chef Paul Prudhomme introduced “blackened redfish” to the general public, these fish were locally known as “spot tail bass” or “puppy drum.” Officially, their proper name is “red drum.”
Coloration is usually a deep burnt orange or copper across the back with a single spot at the base of the tail. Some fish have multiple spots from the tail to the middle of the fish. A strong broad tail and thick shoulders give it all the horsepower it needs to make your day.
Good conservation and our local mariculture center have provided some of the best stocks of redfish I have seen in 40+ years of fishing this area. Al Stokes and his crew at the mariculture center have been boosting the local population with their work for years.
The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Whether you want to light tackle redfish in the creeks or chase the big bulls, now is the time.

By: Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin. Outdoor Recreation Director of the Island Rec Center.
Every December, as holiday lights twinkle across Hilton Head Island, another kind of spar le fills the air, the ash of win s, the rustle of feathers, and the songs of hundreds of birds marking their winter stay. It’s the season for the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC), one of the world’s oldest and largest citizen-science projects, and a beloved local tradition. Between December 14 and January 5, volunteers across the Island join birders nationwide to record e ery feathered isitor they can find. ith over a century of data available through the National Audubon Society, the CBC provides a remarkable window into how bird populations, and the environments they rely on have changed over time.
The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 as a gentle protest against the era’s “Christmas side hunt,” when people competed to shoot as many birds as possible. Instead, conservationists proposed counting birds rather than hunting them. Since then, the CBC has grown to cover most of the estern e isphere, with ore than , count circles, each a 15-mile diameter area surveyed on a single day between December 14 and January 5. On Hilton Head, the count typically takes place near the start of this period, covering Hilton Head, Pinckney, and Daufuskie Islands, as well as surrounding waterways and parts of Bluffton, extending to Palmetto Bluff and the Colleton River Club. urin the hour count, rea aptains lead teams of birders, photographers, and record keepers of all experience levels. From marshes and tidal creeks to backyard feeders, every sighting contributes to a
vast dataset that tracks bird populations, migration patterns, and environmental changes across the hemisphere.
Hilton Head is rich in avian diversity, with nearly species re ularly found across marshes, forests, coastal shores, and waterways. It has recorded over 350 species historically. Typical sightings include shorebirds like Semipalmated lo ers, unlins, and illets, wadin irds such as rets, erons, and hite Ibis, and raptors, including Osprey and Bald Eagles. Over several years, the count usually records 130–150 species and tens of thousands of individual birds, though totals can vary depending on weather, population shifts, and a little luc . n , the ilton ead tallied , indi idual irds across species, recorded y participants, includin field o ser ers in tea s and feeder watchers. The CBC provides not only a snapshot of wintering birds but also vital long-term data for scientists tracking population trends. Anyone, beginner or e pert, can participate, in the field or fro home feeders, and become part of this meaningful conservation tradition.
The next Hilton Head Christmas Bird Count will take place on Monday, ece er , , and e eryone is invited to join. Register online at www. hiltonheadaudubon.org to participate as a recorder, spotter, or photographer alongside an experienced team, or as a eeder atcher countin irds ri ht fro your backyard. No matter your experience level, your observations help scientists monitor bird populations and protect the natural beauty that makes Hilton Head a special haven for wildlife.
