Welcome to Hilton Head!

Hi, Friend! Take a deep breath and let your worries melt away. You are now on Island Time — and once you visit, a piece of Hilton Head will always stay with you to soothe your soul. When you step foot on our Island, the salt air greets you, the horizons open wide, time slows down, your mind starts to calm and suddenly you can appreciate the beauty around you and truly arrive. Early spring on Hilton Head is the stuff of storybooks, strolling uncrowded beaches, enjoying crisp mornings, sun-filled afternoons and golden sunsets. If you’re craving activity and excitement, we’ve got that too. Water sports, marsh and dolphin tours, wildlife, museums and Gullah Geechee hospitality, boutique shopping, fine dining, live music and nightlife, championship golf and nearly everything in between.

Here at Island Events Magazine we pride ourselves on curating the very best our Island has to offer so you don’t miss a thing. Our team of contributors is out in the community, staying in the know. This month Master Naturalist Kathleen McMenamin from the Island Rec. Center teaches us about Protecting Our Coastal Neighbors, The Shorebirds of Hilton Head. Hoping to

improve your golf and putting game? PGA Golf Pro and Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy Instructor Doug Weaver shows us how The Shortest Shot has the Tallest Effect.

But that’s just the start! We’ve included our favorite entertainment, shopping and restaurant listings in this March issue. And we are getting you outdoors! We have dos and don’ts for interacting with Hilton Head’s wildlife, maps of the Island’s roads and pathways, safety info and helpful guides & regulations to keep your stay smooth. Flip the pages for charts for our parks and beaches, an area tide schedule and your March horoscope! Also in this issue, this month’s “Highlights” and Calendar of Events — plus, there’s more at www.hiltonhead.com, www.hiltonheadisland.com, www.bluffton.com, www. savannah.com, www.stsimonsisland.com and www.beaufort.com

Whether you’re here for the first time or the hundredth time, we welcome you to our little slice of heaven. Follow us on Facebook @HiltonHead.Com and Instagram @DiscoverHiltonHead. Sit back, enjoy the breeze and make plans to stay a while. We’re so glad you’re here!

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

It cannot be overstated, the importance of golf’s smallest shot. It’s just a putt! But it will significantly influence a player’s overall performance. If you make the putt, you’re confident for the rest of the game. If you miss it, you’ll uestion yourself for the ne t shot and maybe more.

Putting amounts to roughly 43 of the game. If you score 100 you have 43 putts. But my 50 something years of e perience can improve those numbers. I can get you down to putts per hole, 3 putts per round, saving 7 stokes. What’s more, if you are a putter I can save you up to 4 putts per round.

ere’s why Confidence makes for a happier golfer. Here are a few points toward improving that confidence

• One good putt can change a golfer’s mind set at any skill level

Putting doesn’t re uire strength or athleticism

Build your game from the hole to the tee and find victory

• Putting is an art combining speed and distance control

• Practice putting one-third of the practice time

Find your rhythm and stay with it. ou must also improve your aim, which means learning to set the ball up correctly

The SHORTEST SHOT has the TALLEST EFFECTS

What is in a putt? Only the future of your golf game!

every time. Confidence combined with proper aim means a stellar putt and a stellar game. Here are a few guides

• See the Triple Track lines on the ball

The term Triple Track refers to the 3 parallel lines printed on the ball

This engages ernier yper cuity a visual perception principal that helps the eye detect error

In the photos you see the lines on the putter match the lines on the ball, promoting the proper alignment and follow through. Putts get difficult the day they hand out the money. Seriously

But we can keep it simple Come see me or any of the golf pros at the Palmetto unes Golf cademy. Putting is easy, we got you

PROTECTING OUR COASTAL NEIGHBORS, The Shorebirds of Hilton

LHead

owcountry beaches are considered some of the most beautiful and relaxing in the world, attracting visitors who come to enjoy our natural coastal environment. Long before people discovered this special place, shorebirds were already relying on these beaches as essential habitat for resting, feeding, and nesting. Today, Hilton Head remains home to many shorebird species, several of which have declining populations or are considered threatened. Recognizing the importance of protecting these birds, the Audubon Society worked in 2025 to conserve a section of beach between Fish Haul Creek and Port Royal Plantation, creating a protected area where dogs are not permitted. Efforts like this help preserve critical habitat and support shorebird populations as they continue to nest and migrate along Hilton Head’s shoreline.

Shorebirds play an important role in coastal ecology because they serve as indicators of healthy wetland environments. When shorebird populations are stable and thriving, it often reflects strong, balanced ecosystems along our coast. When their numbers decline, it can signal broader ecological and biological challenges within those habitats. Shorebirds also contribute directly to the health of these environments. Their droppings help fertilize the mudflats where they feed and enrich nearby waters, supporting the growth of phytoplankton, the foundation of the ocean’s food chain. Hilton Head’s beaches provide important seasonal habitat for several species, including some that are threatened. The Red Knot undertakes an extraordinary migration each year from Brazil to the Arctic, while Piping Plovers that spend time along our coast may migrate as far as the Great Lakes to breed. For many of these birds, Hilton Head’s shoreline serves as a critical wintering and resting area during their long journeys.

To help protect these vulnerable species, South Carolina has established five designated seabird sanctuaries along

the coast that provide critical nesting and resting habitat. On Hilton Head Island, the Audubon Society has worked in partnership with the Town of Hilton Head Island to expand these conservation efforts by protecting an area just south of Fish Haul Creek as a dog-restricted beach Keeping dogs out of this area allows shorebirds to rest and nest without disturbance. When birds are chased or disrupted, they may abandon nesting sites or avoid returning altogether, a growing concern as more East Coast beaches become heavily used by people and pets. The area has signs, symbolic fencing, and buoys in the water to clearly mark the protected area, helping ensure shorebirds have a safe place to rest and nest along our shoreline.

Protecting shorebirds on Hilton Head Island is a shared responsibility that helps preserve the health and beauty of our coastal environment. Residents and visitors can make a meaningful difference by giving birds plenty of space, whether walking, running, or biking along the beach Keeping dogs leashed or out of important shorebird areas, properly disposing of trash, and staying alert for birds that may be difficult to see all help reduce disturbance. Simple actions like keeping noise levels low and respecting posted conservation areas allow these small but important coastal residents to rest, nest, and continue their remarkable migrations. By being mindful of the wildlife that depends on our beaches, we can help ensure shorebirds remain part of Hilton Head’s natural landscape for years to come.

5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you'll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of alligators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

Come explore the beautiful Audubon Newhall Preserve, a 50-acre nature sanctuary located on the south end of the Island.

Managed by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, a non-profit organization, this preserve is dedicated to protecting the native forest ecosystem and providing a space

for recreational and educational activities.

With a network of interconnected trails totaling about a mile, visitors can easily navigate and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Preserve offers something for everyone.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. The wide paths and boardwalk are accessible for those with mobility challenges, and there are benches along the way for rest or observation. Be sure to check out the observation deck, where you can view the diverse wildlife that lives here.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon.org/audubon-newhall-preserve.

Majestic Honey Horn

The sprawling, majestic Grounds and Gardens are a beckoningly beautiful location adorned with 68 acres of exploratory trails and floral designs throughout the property.

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis Creek salt marsh, while fact-filled interpre-

tive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer, you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butterflies. In the winter, you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

For five decades, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve has remained a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. With 605 acres of untouched beauty, this sanctuary boasts bridle paths, wetland boardwalks, bridges, and fishing docks. This e pansive preserve, nestled within the Sea Pines Resort, offers countless opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in its breathtaking landscapes.

Embark on a guided boat tour, go on a thrilling horseback ride, set out on a fishing expedition or take a relaxing wagon tour. If you prefer to go at your own pace, simply grab a map and meander through the trails. If you are not a resident or guest of the Sea Pines Resort, you will need to pay a gate fee to enter. www.seapines.com/experiences/ amenities/forest-preserve
