Jarvis Creek Park Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas. There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of alligators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! The Gullah-Geechee people of the Sea Islands, direct descendents of the West Africans once enslaved on Lowcountry plantations, are widely credited with using “haint blue” to deter spirits from entering the home. Before bridges connected these isolated communities to the mainland, milk-paint formulas were often mixed on-site using local pigments and ingredients, including lime.

Symbolizing water, trust, tranquility, confidence, faith, truth and heaven, the color blue is recognized around the world as having mystical properties, including the ability to ward off insects, as well as evil spirits. Several sources suggest the lime — or perhaps indigo — acted as an insect repellent, rather than the color itself. As for ghosts, some argue they are unable to cross over water and others claim “heaven blue” is a deterrent. However, traditions and superstitions vary from island to island. Local Gullah storyteller Louise Miller Cohen, who also serves on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, has tales of Booga Hags and supernatural “hot spots” where your hair will stand on end, but hadn’t heard the term “haint blue” growing up here. Able to trace her family’s roots on Hilton Head back to the 1800s, Cohen notes many Native Islanders used blue as an exterior paint — but it was merely a preference, rather than a symbolic gesture. Referring to it as a “transplant” idea, she laughingly points out that if blue did keep the haints away, EVERY house on the Island would have been the same color. While other Gullah communities may practice this tradition, Cohen insists it had nothing to do with the color of her uncle‘s home, a.k.a. “Bubba Duey’s Little House.” In an effort to protect, preserve and promote Gullah history and culture and showcase life “before the bridge,” Cohen is currently restoring her uncle‘s home on Gumtree Road. The structure, one of several located on property her great-grandfather, William Simmons, purchased after the Civil War, will eventually become part of the non-profit Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island. 1. Let others watch your ball. If you look up, you won’t like what you see.

2. Tell one joke per round. The benefits of laughter will lower your score. 3. When it is breezy,

swing easy. When you swing at 70% you are more likely to strike the sweet spot.

4. Watch the golf movie

his past December was the most awesome trout season, which promises a great January—perhaps the best in years. In early spring, we had tons of small trout, and apparently they have been eating well. Most of the fish are running a couple of pounds and up, with some really nice ones running in the 5-pound-and-up range. Speckled trout seem to be especially sensitive to bitter cold, and the recent trend toward mild winters has definitely benefited the local population. Fishermen are reaping the benefits this season with huge catches. Trout hit like a ton of bricks and are tough fighters. Best of all, the flesh is delicious. Artificial lures are working very well. Hard and soft plastic baits are catching fish equally as well. Light tackle offers some of the best angling to be had here in the Lowcountry. Eight-to-10-pound test line makes for a challenge and allows you to throw an artificial a long way. Generally, working the bait with an occasional jig and slow retrieve works best. In these days and times when catches are so limited, it’s easy to keep a lot more fish than you need when an excellent bite like this one is on. SHAPING THE SHORE: How Hilton Head Protects Its Beaches and Wildlife By Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin at the Island Recreation Center

ilton Head Island is once again reshaping its shoreline through a major beach renourishment project, an effort as practical as it is profound. By moving sand from designated offshore areas back onto our beaches, the Island is reinforcing its natural defenses against erosion and the powerful forces of the Atlantic. This work safeguards far more than scenic shorelines: it protects homes, supports our tourism-driven economy, and strengthens the Island’s resilience during storm seasons. Hilton Head has turned to beach renourishment before in 1990, 1997, 2006, 2011, and 2016. As long as we continue living and building along the coast, it will remain a vital, recurring endeavor. In many ways, it’s our ongoing attempt to keep pace with nature’s timeless rhythm while preserving the Island we cherish. Hilton Head Island’s story begins long before it became a destination, when sediment worn from the distant Appalachian Mountains was carried by rivers to the coast, forming the sandbars that would eventually grow into barrier islands. Once this sediment reached the ocean, it was set in motion by longshore currents, flows of water that move parallel to the shoreline. Each wave pushes a sweep of water up onto the beach and then back out, picking up sand and moving it in a zigzag pattern known as longshore drift. Along the East Coast, these currents typically move from north to south, which means barrier islands like Hilton Head naturally erode at their northern ends while gradually building up on their southern shores. This constant movement of sand is not a flaw in the coastline but the very process that created Hilton Head and continues to reshape it today. This year’s renourishment effort is a major undertaking, with plans to place approximately 2.2 million cubic yards of sand along 46,500 feet of Hilton Head’s shoreline. It is part of the town’s long-term beach management pro-

gram, which schedules renourishment every eight to ten years to keep pace with natural erosion. The added sand will strengthen several key stretches of the Island, including the South and Central beaches, the Heel, and the shoreline along Fish Haul Creek and Pine Island within Hilton Head Plantation. The current renourishment project relies on four offshore “borrow” areas, shoals, carefully selected for sand that closely matches the Island’s natural grain size and color, minimizing disruption to local habitats. Hydraulic dredges excavate this sand and pump it through roughly 50,000 feet of pipeline to the shoreline, where the accompanying seawater flows back into the ocean. Once the sand arrives, crews use bulldozers and other heavy equipment to sculpt it into a natural, protective beach profile, restoring the Island’s familiar landscape residents and visitors know so well. Beyond safeguarding homes and the local economy, beach renourishment plays a critical role in protecting Hilton Head’s environment and wildlife. By replenishing the sand, the project preserves dune habitats essential for native species, including sea turtles that nest along the shore and migratory shorebirds that rely on the beaches for resting and nesting. Healthy dunes act as natural storm surge barriers, shielding upland habitats and maritime forests while maintaining the Island’s biodiversity. The new sand also supports the growth of beach plants, which anchor the dunes and form the foundation for resilient, natural habitats, ensuring that both the land and its wildlife continue to thrive for generations to come.
