ARIES You’re on a creative streak this month, Aries! Use that creativity to bring harmony when those around you test boundaries. Stand your ground and use humor or a new idea to establish a new game plan. Then take that new idea into the workforce and prepare to lead your team to success. Be mindful of your peace and health during this time.

TAURUS This last month of summer is a busy one. Slow down when you can, enjoy time with those around you, maybe a block party or road trip. Love is also in the air. Be open and direct, share what is in your heart. Keep an eye on your health during all the fun. Early nights, mindful mornings and movement will help keep you rested and on point.

GEMINI No rest for the weary as we close out summer, Gemini! Think weddings, block parties and back-to-school prep. Slow down! Maybe host a potluck or take a road trip to see the (partial) solar eclipse August 12th. This season is hectic, but you’ll miss powerful moments if you can’t be in the moment. Practice mindfulness.

CANCER Look for an ease of financial strain as yo en oy this last onth o s er. o r first instinct may be to spend the extra money, but not before you’ve paid off debt and established an emergency fund. Now is the time to revive that side-hustle. Don’t skip making memories before the school year begins. Family bonding doesn’t have to be expensive!

LEO Your energy is bright and your heart is open this month. Pour into those you love; communication is easy and clear. On the job front your new, fresh ideas could pay off in droves. But pay attention to finances. ow ight e the er ect ti e or a ersonal a it yo r health finances and goals.

VIRGO Breathe deep and take it easy as you enjoy a peaceful season. Spend time with loved ones, even those far away. If your social circle calls, choose only those you truly wish to engage. You have a powerful charisma and your desire to be kind means you can overextend. This is a powerful time to cut toxic ties and clear those who cloud your energy.

Your dancing card is full for the month of August, and you are in your element. It’s not just social, either! You are shining in the workforce and in front of your peers. The solar eclipse on the 12th could be an awesome bonding experience for you and your work besties. Don’t allow burnout. Be mindful of peace and rest and take time to move your body.

SCORPIO Opportunity is your oyster this month, Scorpio! Whether it’s leading your team, aiming for that next step or starting something new, you just keep winning. Be careful not to overextend and guard your health and peace of mind. A trip to the spa or a weekend away might be in order. Take time to quiet your thoughts and get a little exercise.

SAGITTARIUS Is your passport ready? August is giving you the travel bug. Traveling with friends or visiting a far-off island buddy with a spare room might be just the treat you need. When you return home, you’ll be rested and ready for the opportunities landing at your feet. You’re not just lucky, you’re born for this.

CAPRICORN Budget concerns could be a thing of the past! There is abundance in your future, in your li e an on the o . it own with a financial planner and map out the best course ahead. If celebration is in store, keep it modest and humble. The more that’s in the bank, the more it can grow.

An overlooked budget shortfall can be addressed if caught early. Maybe start a new early-morning walking routine.

PISCES Looking for that next career step? It could be in store. Your quick wit and problem-solving have been noticed. Your charm and strength of character have drawn attention, too. If it’s a leadership role you desire, it’s yours. If it’s a change in position, just ask. At home, expect harmony and success. Begin by listening to each other.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

The marshes surrounding Hilton Head are a lush wilderness, ideal for exploring by kayak. For thousands of years, small boats have been used to connect these coastal islands for the purposes of trade, family and culture. The modern kayak continues the longstanding Lowcountry tradition of the personal watercraft. If you do one thing while visiting our Island, get on the water in a kayak.
Kayaking is a true family sport. It is fun and easy enough for children and seniors, but complex enough to engage serious enthusiasts. Our ideal weather and temperate climate make the Lowcountry the perfect place for beginners to learn kayaking. For your first time out, employ a knowledgeable guide to take you on a tour of the winding trails and open vistas of the salt marsh. Your guide will give you an overview of the plant and animal species in the area, as well as interpreting the tides and winds to give you the best possible trip. If you are kayaking with kids, a tour has the added benefit of the guide providing entertainment throughout the expedition.
If you are an experienced paddler and would like to go out on your own, rent some kayaks and plan ahead. The tides in our area vary from 7 to 10 feet, making it crucial to know the tides before going kayaking. While paddling against the tide is not difficult, going against the strongest tide for the whole trip isn’t that enjoyable. If you plan to paddle with kids, choose the easiest possible

Look up the tide chart in this magazine or online at hiltonheadisland.com/beaches/tides. This site lets you pick from many local waterways. For your first time out, plan to split the low or high tide. If you want to be out for two hours, leave an hour before low or high tide. For example: if the high tide at Broad Creek is at 7:24 a.m. on June 1, leave at 6:24 a.m. and return at 8:24 a.m. The times of high and low tide vary every day, so remember to check the tide tables!
You will also want to check the weather before heading out. Technology has made this an easy task. Remember, weather predictions get more accurate closer to the day of the prediction. Also note, wind is not always your friend. If it is blowing 10 mph or above, expect it to be a bit difficult paddling in one direction; 15 mph and above be cautious; at 20 mph and above, you probably shouldn’t go out. Check the weather right before you go, to be sure there are no pop-up storms, which are common in the spring and summer. Again, if kayaking with kids, err on the side of caution for the best possible experience.

A while back I noticed a noise in my engine, but I was busy and I didn’t get it checked. My trusted car repairman said if I’d brought it in at the start, it wo l e een a si le ine ensi e fi . t now it s been several months and the problems have compounded. Your golf game is just the same.
Consider these three points:
1. Regularly Change Your Oil/Check Your Grip
We know to have our vehicle oil changed regularly; our cars even alert us when we’re due. Oil lubricates the parts of the engine and helps them work e ficiently an re ce wear an tear. i ilarly check the pressure of your golf grip to prevent gradually gripping tighter without noticing and harming your distance and consistency.
2.Check Your Alignment/Check Your Stance
Many golfers imitate the wide stance of the pros on . t it s like the tires on yo r car they nee to be aligned regularly in order to drive straight and e ficiently. yo r tires are o t o align ent yo re constantly correcting to keep the car on the road. If your stance is overly wide like most pros (who are at the top of the game) then your golf swing sequence is likely not on par for your game and you will lose distance and consistency.
3. Get A Regular Checkup
My trusted car repairman suggested I check in, even use

a gas additive when I go on long trips, particularly in the mountains to go faster and farther. A regular checkup with a Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy Golf Professional is the golf additive that can give your game more energy and speed.

As August settles over the Lowcountry, our streets, gardens, and roadsides come alive with crepe myrtles in full bloom, ranging from crisp whites and soft pinks to deep reds and rich purples. Look past the blossoms and you’ll find another reason to admire them: smooth, sculptural bark that peels away in shades of pale yellow to deep cinnamonorange, keeping them a standout even in the off-season. Crepe myrtles aren’t native to South Carolina, but they’ve been a garden staple here since the late 1700s, prized for their drought tolerance and low-maintenance beauty in our hot, humid climate. In the quieter winter months, this is a tree that keeps giving back to the Lowcountry.
Commonly called the “lilac of the South,” crepe myrtles first made their way from China and Korea, to England, and from there to the United States by way of Charleston in 1786. They were brought over by French botanist André Michaux. He was said to have sent trees from his nursery to the gardens of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and George Washington at Mount Vernon, cementing their place among the era’s most fashionable plantings. From there, crepe myrtles were widely planted and naturalized across the Gulf Coast states throughout the 19th century. Many of the crepe myrtles you see today are hybrids, bred for stronger disease resistance, fuller flowering, and even more striking bark.
Part of the crepe myrtle’s appeal lies in its versatility. It is a tall-growing deciduous (sheds its leaves in the fall and winter) shrub, it’s often trained into a tree form with one or several trunks and a graceful, arching silhouette. Cultivars range from compact dwarf varieties just a few feet tall to towering specimens reaching 30 feet or more, with old, established trees occasionally climb-
ing to 40 feet. This wide range in size is exactly why you’ll find crepe myrtles doing so many different jobs across the Lowcountry landscape. Dwarf varieties are tucked into foundation plantings and container gardens, medium types line driveways and patios, and the tallest cultivars are planted as shade trees or set along streets and boulevards, where their canopy can spread 15 to 25 feet wide. Because they thrive in full sun, you’ll often spot them planted in open, sunny spots rather than tucked beneath larger trees, giving them plenty of room to put on their signature summer show.
Crepe myrtles also quietly play a role in the local food web. By late November, once seed capsules have dried, birds begin visiting, and the true feast arrives in winter. From December through February, goldfinches, dark-eyed juncos, house finches, cardinals, and sparrows devour the seed crop. Seed that falls to the ground doesn’t go to waste either, as cardinals, juncos, and sparrows will forage for it below the tree, though goldfinches prefer to feed straight from the capsules above. By late February, few seeds remain. It’s a fitting reminder that even a nonnative ornamental can become deeply woven into the rhythms of Lowcountry wildlife, representing a striking shift in diet for a number of native bird species.
From their brilliant summer blooms to their sculptural winter silhouettes, crepe myrtles have earned their place as one of the Lowcountry’s most beloved trees. They ask for little, thrive in our heat and humidity, and give back in every season, feeding local birds long after their flowers have faded. So the next time you pass one in full bloom this August, take a moment to appreciate not just its color, but the two centuries of history and the quiet ecological role it carries with it.

Battling a jack crevalle takes strategy, effort and time.

By Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters
We were having fun at the nearshore reef, catching bluefish, summer trout and blackfish on light tackle when — all of a sudden — the small Fin Nor spinning reel started screaming as line rapidly disappeared off the spool.
It didn’t take but a second to figure out the anchor had to come up — and quick — as the couple hundred yards of braid was almost gone. With the anchor up, we proceeded to chase the fish, angler in the bow, reeling frantically to get line back and to maintain a standing position as we bounced through the waves.
Literally hours passed as the seesaw battle ensued, much to the chagrin of the angler’s companions, as they spent the bulk of their trip watching him battle this huge fish. Finally, after a couple hours, the angler was able to lift the fish near the surface and we could ID the culprit. It was a huge jack crevalle, and he was nowhere near giving up.
The angler groaned as the line disappeared again and the large jack dug in and made another blistering run. We were now in overtime.
We came up with a plan to work the fish back to the surface, at which point we would use a billfish tactic by charging him,
using the boat and grabbing the leader. After two unsuccessful attempts, the third time was the charm and we boated a 37-pound jack crevalle!
Everyone was happy for that battle to be over. We snapped a few pics and released a slightly tired jack.
The jack crevalle is a fairly common fish in our waters, which is usually plentiful in summer. The big bruisers, usually in the 20 to 40 pound range, are often seen in big schools cruising on the surface. They are quite spooky and fast-moving, so one must be stealthy when sight fishing.
Either live bait or artificials will get the job done. The bait must be placed in front of the school, but far enough to not spook the fish. These schools often swim erratically and fast.
Medium to heavy tackle is recommended for these bulldog battlers… unless you have hours to spare, of course.
