ARIES April invites reflection, Aries. It’s not a slowdown, it’s a refinement. You’re being redirected toward something more fulfilling. Protect your home life and emotional wellbeing, success feels better when it doesn’t cost your peace. Balance ambition with presence.

TAURUS Renewal is the theme this April. Speak openly, act authentically and trust that your efforts are noticed. Clear conversations can resolve lingering tensions, but choose your words carefully. Integrity and consistency continue to work in your favor.

GEMINI Creativity and calm coexist for you this month, Gemini. You’re adapting beautifully, even when plans shift. Hold your standards, stay curious, and don’t shy away from opportunities to showcase your talents. Your energy is uplifting for those around you. Lean into it and keep going!

CANCER Thoughtful planning is required this month, Cancer. Finetune your skills, review finances and strengthen your foundation. Emotional openness will deepen connections, so don’t retreat when support is offered. Stability is built one mindful choice at a time. Stay present and you will succeed.

LEO Forward motion continues in April, Leo, but patience is key. Your enthusiasm is contagious, yet not everyone moves at your pace. Lead with kindness and flexibility while staying true to your goals. Progress doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful

VIRGO It’s time for a reset! Your pace has been intense. April is an opportunity to check in with your body, home and relationships. Small adjustments now prevent burnout later. You may fight the urge to rest, but it is actually productive. Don’t forget that.

LIBRA This is your month to reconnect and realign, Libra. Relationships flourish with intention, and career ideas are ready to be implemented. Just don’t neglect your health and well-being in the process. Harmony starts with self-care.

SCORPIO Home and heart matters take center stage, Scorpio, bringing healing and satisfaction. Vulnerability will strengthen bonds during this time. At work, reassess how resources are being used, restructuring wisely leads to long-term success. Stay calm and trust the plan.

SAGITTARIUS

Slow down, Sagittarius! You’ve earned a rest. April offers moments of peace if you allow them. Show affection freely and avoid overanalyzing relationships. Presence, not perfection, leads to deeper connection. Tune in to that big, beautiful heart of yours.

CAPRICORN Practice clear communication this April, it will lead to resolution. Flexibility opens doors, even with unlikely allies. You’re given a chance to mend misunderstandings and move forward with renewed confidence. Focus on what truly matters.

AQUARIUS Feeling bogged down? Don’t fret! The foundation for success is being laid as we ‘speak.’ Your perseverance and careful thinking have made good impressions. Opportunities are about to present themselves. When you see them, MOVE! This is your hard work paying off!

PISCES

Achieving that dream is within site, Pisces! How you approach the goal is key… You have been gifted with the charm, charisma and talent. Have you put in the hard work? If the answer is yes, NOW is the time to move. Wait until it’s too late and risk starting over.

5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of alligators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

Come explore the beautiful Audubon Newhall Preserve, a 50-acre nature sanctuary located on the south end of the Island.

Managed by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, a non-profit organization, this preserve is dedicated to protecting the native forest ecosystem and providing a space

for recreational and educational activities.

With a network of interconnected trails totaling about a mile, visitors can easily navigate and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Preserve offers something for everyone.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. The wide paths and boardwalk are accessible for those with mobility challenges, and there are benches along the way for rest or observation. Be sure to check out the observation deck, where you can view the diverse wildlife that lives here.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon.org/audubon-newhall-preserve.

Majestic Honey Horn

The sprawling, majestic Grounds and Gardens are a beckoningly beautiful location adorned with 68 acres of exploratory trails and floral designs throughout the property.

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis Creek salt marsh, while fact-filled interpre-

tive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer, you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butterflies. In the winter, you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

For five decades, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve has remained a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. With 605 acres of untouched beauty, this sanctuary boasts bridle paths, wetland boardwalks, bridges, and fishing docks. This expansive preserve, nestled within the Sea Pines Resort, offers countless opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in its breathtaking landscapes.

Embark on a guided boat tour, go on a thrilling horseback ride, set out on a fishing expedition or take a relaxing wagon tour. If you prefer to go at your own pace, simply grab a map and meander through the trails. If you are not a resident or guest of the Sea Pines Resort, you will need to pay a gate fee to enter. www.seapines.com/experiences/ amenities/forest-preserve

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

5 T HINGS I Learned from GOLFING GREATS

“Just try to hit it solid. When you try to hit a homerun you strike out. When you try to hit a long drive, you get into trouble.”

4. Tiger Woods’ father Earl Woods posited that the most important distance in golf is between the ears. He understood golf as a mental game, and began nurturing mental techniques with a 3-year-old Tiger.

One of the most intriguing things about golf is the importance of its mental aspect, and how every player will approach the game in a slightly different way. Today, I want to share with you some of what I’ve heard from and about the golfing legends around me.

1. Arnold Palmer suggested changing both shoes and socks after nine holes. Why? When your shoes get wet, they get heavier, changing the calculations in your balance. Wet feet can also chill the entire body, which tightens everything and can result in a sluggish swing. Warm, dry feet help the body keep a smooth and effortless swing.

2. Nick Faldo loved routine on and off the course. He recommended that players trim their fingernails every Monday evening. Since our hands form our connection to the club, this makes perfect sense, and explains why pro golfers are no stranger to the manicure!

3. Mark McGwire had 70 home runs in one season of Major League Baseball, and he was pretty darn good at golf, too. He liked to say that hitting a home run and hitting a good drive weren’t all that different.

5. Andrew Magee would say that playing golf is like driving a car looking forward down the road, not thinking about the pedals, steering wheel or speedometer. “Golfers that think about their backswing eat hotdogs,” he said. “Golfers that think about the forward swing eat steak.”

There is so much to learn from the pros, from great golf instructors, and about yourself in golf. That’s part of what makes it so fascinating! Come see me anytime and we’ll get to work on getting the most out of your own game.

Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call 866-455-6890 or go to www. palmettodunes.com for more information.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS, The Mating Season of Our Local Wading Birds

Spring has sprung in the Lowcountry, the air is warmer, the marsh is buzzing, and nature is putting on a show. Our local wading birds are no exception, and this month they are bringing the drama. From splashes of brilliantly colored plumage to the time-honored rituals of courtship and nest building, April is one of the most exciting times of year to be a wildlife watcher in South Carolina and the Lowcountry is practically a five-star resort for birds in love. Grab your binoculars, head to the water’s edge, and get ready to appreciate the small and spectacular details that make this place so uniquely beautiful.

When it comes to real estate, wading birds have a very specific preference, and they are not shy about it. Most of our local species nest in rookeries, communal colonies where multiple species live and raise their young together. These bustling communities are typically built in trees and branches that hang directly over the water, a clever strategy that creates a natural barrier against land predators like raccoons, rodents, and snakes. However, nature always has a catch. Nesting over the water invites one opportunistic predator from below, the American alligator, who is more than happy to snap up any chick that tumbles from the nest. No neighborhood is perfect! Nests are built from found materials like twigs, branches, grasses, and the iconic Spanish moss that drapes so beautifully across our Lowcountry trees. Two of the most active rookeries in our area can be found at Wood Ibis Pond on Pinckney Island and the Lawton Stables Pond in Sea Pines, and in April these spots transform into some of the loudest and liveliest places in the entire Lowcountry.

One of the most rewarding parts of birdwatching in April is learning to read the physical changes that signal a bird

The Lowcountry is practically a five-star resort for birds in love

is ready tofind a mate. The Great Egret, elegant and statuesque in its all-white plumage, develops long, delicate, lacy feathers along its back known as aigrettes. These wispy plumes were once so prized for fashion that they nearly drove the species to extinction, but thankfully today we get to admire them right where they belong. Look closely at the bare patch of skin between the eye and bill, called the lore. Outside of breeding season this area is a muted olive-yellow, but come April it transforms into a vivid bright green. When a male is actively courting, he fans his magnificent plumes and tilts his bill skyward in a mating dance that is truly something to see. The Snowy Egret, smaller and spunkier than its Great Egret cousin, undergoes its own colorful transformation. Its lores shift from bright yellow to a deep reddish hue, and its famously cheerful yellow feet darken slightly in tone. These busy little birds are full of personality and always on the move The Tricolored Heron rounds out our colorful cast with perhaps the most striking transformation of all. Its lores shift to a vivid cobalt blue and its legs transition from yellow to a warm pinkish-red, making it one of the most eye-catching birds in the marsh this time of year.

The vibrant plumes, the bustling rookeries, and the ancient rituals of courtship playing out across our marshes each spring are only possible because the habitats that support them still exist. Our tidal creeks, salt marshes, and coastal wetlands are not just beautiful backdrops, they are the foundation upon which these birds build their lives and raise their young. Supporting local conservation efforts, respecting nesting areas, and staying aware of the wildlife around us are small but meaningful ways to ensure that future generations get to experience this same joy. So get outside, explore your Lowcountry, and let the birds remind you why this place is worth protecting.
