From the EDITOR Dear Readers , Welcome to Issue 61. It’s been over 100 days that our State Government has been back in power. The LOCAL News has not had any communication, media release and not one email from our new State Member Ali King in relation to any progress on any of the promises she made while campaigning or in fact any work she is doing in the electorate. One of the top issues in Australia is the COVID-19 Vaccine and Matt Owen has done a fantastic article on receiving the COVID-19 jab. Our community has one of the highest populations with senior citizens and we thought this may have been of interest to you if you are having reservations. Also, Mozza our staff writer has done a great article on a possible site for the Hospital Ali King promised in her election campaign and it seems there is a missed opportunity there. Dear Cranky Lizard, Another very good interpretation of the politics of division being peddled by the indigenous industry. Who gave them the authority to re-write history? When the first explorers arrived in Australia it was noted that their were two distinct tribes that they came across, one group were coastal with outrigger canoes, soft skinned and smaller than the land based aboriginals. Only one group survived, but were they the first? There was also the early “aboriginal“ skull found some years ago, but unfortunately had no relationship to the more modern indigenous skulls and was hastily hidden from view with a “burial in a secret location” by members of the aboriginal industry. Aboriginals were never a nation and if they really detest the nation we have become, could they please return all of the very generous hand outs and funds that they have so consistently received for so many years. Every country in Europe has been invaded many times over, England for instance has been invaded by the Germans, the French, Norwegians ,Celts, and Picts, just to name a few. The English who were invaded got on with their future, taking the best that they learned and used it. It’s about time the aboriginal industry did the

Dear Editor, How lucky we are that free speech is still alive and kicking on Bribie ! Bribie and Surrounds readers were blessed to have two fine articles in the last edition with an informative guide by Cranky Lizard on the meaning of Australia Day and who gets what for public holidays. Community tongues have certainly been wagging at Cranky’s very informative list ! Secondly the letter to the editor from John Oxenford on the forced 2008 council amalgamation and it’s subsequent short comings. John made many valid points , but did fail to mention that the former Caboolture Shire Council was the jewel in the crown and was the best performing council of the combined 3. It was a well run organisation with money in the bank! That money went on to help pay for the Redcliffe rail line . Many said at the time, and are still saying it today that because of similarities Caboolture/ Bribie should have amalgamated with the Sunshine Coast. But alas it was not to be as the Caboolture Shire was needed to prop up the rest . As in 2008, ratepayer’s were once again hung out to dry when in 2010 Unity water was forced on us. Unity water then became the golden fleece and has since delivered increasing large profits to state and local government at the expense of the resident and ratepayer . Only pay for what you use , they say ! - I think not. Residents using NO water at all due to travel or time spent in hospital still come home to large water bills. Bills that are made up largely of red tape and charges . Yes , Unity water is certainly the golden fleece and we the user “Are Being Fleeced “! Rodney Hansen Bongaree.

Dear Editor, It seems to be the current thing that some cannot live without wanting to undo/change/alter things that have been in place for many years. Why change that which has been celebrated or remembered? I am not mentioning specifics just asking why change remembrance days? Regards Farley Enough is enough. I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a daughter and a wonderful friend to many but this seems to be forgotten when I say I am also a cyclist. The venom some motorists have towards cyclists is quite shocking and scary. What turns a seemingly normal person into someone who wants to kill a stranger because they ride a bike? No, we don’t pay rego on a bike but we do pay rego on our cars and boats and caravans. I don’t mind if you hate us but for all of us to stay safe we all need to follow the road rules. As a cyclist I follow all the road rules. Granted many don’t but please don’t tar us all with the same brush. A few months ago, I had a heated debate with a L plate driver who wanted to see me dead and also wanted to beat up my family. (All on camera but police were not interested). Last Sunday we had a woman steer straight at my husband to hit us. Luckily, we avoided her but when confronted she thought it was funny and said we had no rights on the road as we did not pay rego? Does that mean in my car I can break the rules because I am in a registered vehicle? The argument does not stack up. Nearly all drivers on Bribie are respectful of all other road users, bikes included so it is just a certain few, but it only takes one. Many drivers do not know that on a single lane roundabout, (on Bribie we have many) cyclists can take the lane (ride in the middle) for safety as a car and a cyclist on the roundabout at the same time is not safe. Drivers love to speed up to beat us to the roundabout. This causes them to slam their brakes on because they are going too fast to enter the roundabout causing a situation that is not safe for anyone. Believe us when we say we do everything to avoid holding any cars up but if this occurs it will be for 2 or 3 seconds. Is that so bad? No one is asking you to like us but please don’t see red and try to kill us. Enough is enough.

RESIDENTS TURN OUT FOR SHORELINE COMMUNITY MEETING

Moreton Bay Regional Council held a second community meeting in Beachmere in February, to provide information to residents about the Council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS). Meetings such as these are scheduled for coastal communities across the Region. A Panel of Council staff, experts and residents was mooted in 2019 with residents urged to nominate as a representative of their community and their area. This Panel never eventuated and now a rolling roadshow of Councillors and Council staff set up in local parks and encourage residents to “have their say” on the coastal environment. According to a colourful, glossy brochure produced by Moreton Bay Regional

Council, and posted to local residents, the CHAS is “a long term planning strategy to help Council, service providers, residents and the wider community understand and plan for the likely impacts of coastal change.” It states it will help Council understand and plan for impacts of coastal change and mitigate potential risks from coastal hazards such as coastal erosion, storm tide inundation and a predicted sea level rise. The Council believe that impacts from coastal hazards can be minimised through strategic planning by maintaining, modifying or transforming the coastline. Measures such as using physical infrastructure such as seawalls, raising levels of key access roads and introducing storm surge barriers and, even, improving the resilience of private properties are suggested. Some residents were particularly interested in the suggested “land swap” possibilities. Beachmere residents have now attended two of these coastal community talkfests and had hoped that more information would be available on their ability to repair and defend their damaged properties and shrinking foreshore against rising tides and storm erosion. The Council neatly side stepped this issue by saying the State Government, not the Council, is a key driver of the policies and decisions about the management of the foreshore. However, the State Government does not allow access to the beach, making it impossible for most of the property owners to undertake necessary works. Unfortunately, even with the input of $13m from the State Government to help fund the development of adaptation strategies for local governments impacted by coastal hazards Ali King, State Member for Pumicestone, was not at any of the coastal community meetings. It is also the State Government, not the Council, that plans to undertake a survey of the Beachmere foreshore properties to

determine new property boundaries. This is despite the fact that the Council and the State Government are aware of the Proclamation in 1975 that transferred the management and control of the Beachmere foreshore to the Council. Council are also circulating information about their “A line Seawall” project where seawalls at Beachmere will be installed and aligned within private property as

a long term solution to ongoing erosion, commencing in the “first half of 2021” with completion in 2022. A further Community Meeting is scheduled for March where the Proclamation will be discussed. Hopefully the Councillors, Council staff and State representatives will be a little better informed and have some answers for the Beachmere residents.

Prime Site for New Public Hospital Presents By Staff Writer Mozza

The State Government has promised Bribie Island a new Public Hospital facility on island to reduce the need for elderly residents to commute to Caboolture for treatment such as chemotherapy and renal treatments. Many common ailments need repeated treatments to avoid failing health and death and having these facilities near aging populations is critical. The State Governments election promise in October 2020 to provide this type of facility was welcomed by the community and the Health Minister has now had four months to instruct her Department to procure the land necessary to build it. One of the local concerns with this proposal was the lack of suitable sites to build the hospital given the scarceness of private land on Bribie Island and the need for the facility to be central to all residents. As if on cue in January 2021 a perfect block of land has been advertised for sale at 99 First Ave. Woorim across from the Bribie Island Cemetery between Woorim and Bongaree. Surrounded by Crown land this site would be perfect for phase 1 of the Hospital as it is 4047m2 with a 101 meter frontage for ambulance access. A five storey building could be placed on the site for delivery of multiple regular health treatments and a small emergency department. It is not near any other domestic or commercial premises which would make it perfect for helicopter access as well. The site has clear strategic and logistical

advantages that make it perfect for this purpose and the Local and Surrounds has contacted the agent to enquire the status of the sale. To date no offers have been made by the Procurement Division of the Department of Health which seems like an opportunity lost. Enquiries with the Department have not been responded to at the time of publication however it is understood that the local State Member for Pumicestone, Ms Ali King has been approached by constituents about this matter and is making her own enquiries. The population of Bribie Island is estimated at 33000 persons recently as significant growth has occurred since the last census. At the last ABS census a total of 54% or 18000 residents are over 55 and in likely need of health care. As a community we need to assist the government deliver on this promise wherever possible and keep our eyes peeled for opportunities such as this.

Despite the false statements of some, I have never stated I am in favour of a nuclear power plant anywhere in the Longman electorate. In an article published in The Australian newspaper on February 18, titled “Coalition MPs in drive for nuclear energy”, the reporter stated that I backed lifting the ban on nuclear energy. Using the lessons learned to give back where it matters The journey that Annette and her Dad travelled as a Father and Daughter has lead Annette back to Bribie in a new career with Home Instead to honour one of her Dad’s last conversations with her where he asked Annette “to go teach them Daught” – as he wanted her to help people understand the services which are available to help them stay in their homes, stay connected to their communities and live their way for as long as they can. The transition from funerals to working with Home Instead was an easy one for Annette as she had always known about Home Instead’s values of caring for community through compassion, whilst empowering people to stay at home and live their own true life.

Jodi and Annette You may remember one of Damian Brown’s “Close Encounters” we published in our May 2018 edition on Annette Lourigan of Beachmere who was at the time managing GHM Funerals on the island as she held a biodegradable turtle that a person’s ashes could go into. She shared with us how she got into the funeral sector, dealt with breast cancer and chatted about her Dad’s farm being her escape place. After the story ran Annette and her Father’s journey together changed dramatically as her Dad was diagnosed with an incurable cancer and she left QLD to be with him and be there for him. Annette shares that “together they navigated what seemed at times an impossible abyss of health care and allied health care services that never to seem to connect”; sadly, neither of them was new to navigating health systems as both had done it for Annette’s StepMum who had dementia.

The Queensland Labor Government goes into opposition with private enterprise over medical issues…is this correct or not? By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings.

I suppose you could say that it is a good idea. I suppose you could say that more is better –a view that prevails in the United States of America. And, we could also say that we shall wait and see what happens. Because the announcement, made by the Queensland Government, that if re-elected, they would spend $265 million dollars on building three satellite hospitals in the Moreton Bay Region, one in Petrie, one in Caboolture, and one explicitly dedicated for Bribie Island, smacks of an election promise with too many legs. Examine this announcement for a moment. One in Petrie. OK. Good, Where will it be, and what will a ‘satellite ‘ hospital actually do? One in Caboolture. Mmmm – OK. There is already an outstanding hospital in Caboolture – an outstanding one indeed, supplemented by an excellent private hospital. So, what will another satellite hospital actually do? And, then there is one explicitly dedicated for Bribie Island. Now, what does that mean? Well, this is where the whole thing gets a bit blurred around the edges. You see, we have one to be placed in Petrie, where and when and what purpose is yet to be determined. You see, we have one to be placed in Caboolture, presumably alongside existing facilities which are outstanding. So what is the point of having something there? And then there is one explicitly dedicated for Bribie Island… Now the Queensland Government, through the conduit of the local Member for Pumicestone, Ali King, have announced that the proposal will need a viability study to determine just what is required and where it all should be? Excuse me? Yes, you heard right – we now have to have a viability study or words to that effect, to determine just what this project will do and where it will do it. Excluding the obvious, which is being pedantic, I ask the question… “ Before you announce a triple satellite hospital development for Petrie, Caboolture and specifically Bribie Island, would you not already know where these places are going and what they will do?’ Private enterprise would, no question about that. So, alright, let us assume that the study proceeds and the proposal is more than just another empty banging noise in an election campaign. Whereabouts on Bribie Island would you place another satellite hospital? Where? There is no apparent available land, maybe one large block out at Woorim, but privately owned and already perhaps sold, to the State Government.? Then again, you are the State Government so you can resume land for specific purposes; perhaps that is to be included in the viability plan/study?

We have not even got to where this thing will be yet, and already the page is full of questions…unanswered questions at that. We know where the private enterprise medical hub is going to be, and we know what it is going to do because all of the details are included in the Moreton Bay Council papers, which were released last year. And that is what you would expect from a well organized and serious Local Government body and a well organized and serious private enterprise body; both of them intent upon providing a much-needed service to the community of Bribie Island. The medical hub will be located on Bribie Island, as you would expect from a medical service explicitly dedicated to Bribie Island. Simple. Curiosity draws us back, like a moth to a flame, to the proposal of the Queensland State Government and the electoral promise made by the Member for Pumicestone, Ali King. Curiosity demands that we ask the question, in the light of the details of what the private enterprise medical hub will achieve, what will the Labor Government’s satellite do on Bribie Island? Will this taxpayer-funded satellite hospital be a competitor? Or a supplement? Experience has shown that Government enterprises competing with private enterprises end up with the Government enterprise resembling the Benny Hill Show. But the most intriguing question of all remains to be answered. Just precisely, what does explicitly dedicated to Bribie Island mean? Does it mean located on the Island? If so, where? Or, does it mean close to the Island, like on the mainland at Ningi? If that is the case, will the facility be dedicated only to Bribie Islanders and how the hell will that work? Now, what we have done here is just ask a few fundamental questions, and we have been able to expose some bloody big holes in the election promise; yes, we have! That does not mean that the questions can’t be answered – it just means that we are waiting for answers to legitimate questions about the use of taxpayers money for developing satellite hospitals explicitly dedicated to Bribie Island. We are waiting for the answers. You can contact the office of the Local Member for Pumicestone, Ali King and ask the question. I shall be – and I shall be asking the questions until I get the answer. But then again, you could say that if the question is too hard to answer, or the election promise is too hard to deliver, you could always hope that the viability study, or whatever it is called, would determine that the project is not viable and cannot go ahead!

Now that would let you off the hook, wouldn’t it?

Yet again it reaches that time of year where chocolate eggs line the shelves and are in high demand. Easter is one of those holidays that seems to sneak up on us, with everyone too busy with work and being back at school. Although, it is a little hard to forget the day when hot cross bun line supermarket shelves starting from January. However, in the hustle and bustle that inevitably comes with the first few months of the year, Easter tends to result in massive chocolate hunts and maybe a lazy day at home. And while there is nothing wrong with such choices, it is also so important to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings, local businesses and the freedom that comes with being without strict Covid-19 rules. For many, Easter much like Christmas, will be spent inside with safety rules in place not allowing picnics or beach trips. But for us those activities are still very much on the cards. Good weather provided, exploring local areas or even venturing further is very much encouraged. Easter, a traditionally Christian celebration, is celebrated in various ways. Those who follow the Christian religion take the time to remember Jesus Christ and those who do not necessarily celebrate the event use the long weekend to the best of their advantage. But regardless of religion, the event will always involve copious amounts of chocolate. With many people

and businesses still suffering the effects of extensive Covid-19 lockdowns, it is incredibly important to get out and show our support. Holidays like these often attract many inter-state visitors with people taking a chance to visit family and friends. But many of us choose to stay home rather than exploring our own State. With a long weekend as an excuse, planning a day trip, or even an over-night stay somewhere provides a fun experience whilst simultaneously offering support to Aussie businesses. Even a fun trip up the beach gets everyone up, about and out of the house. We often only associate the holiday with sweets and crazy easter egg hunts, but the holiday also supports the ideals of rebirth and new beginnings. With a new year on our hands, the hope of various vaccines and lifted lockdowns (for most of us), we have the opportunity to pursue new ideas and projects we’ve all been wanting to try. It provides us the ability to reflect on how far we have progressed and grown, with this time last year marking the beginning of global lockdowns bringing fear and uncertainty. And, obviously we are not just yet in the clear, but we’ve finally begun to see a little bit more hope. Happy easter to all, may it provide the opportunity for adventure and of course as much chocolate as one can possibly consume.

Before You Start! Use a stable hard backed chair to sit in or to use for balance, or stand next to your kitchen bench so you can use that for balance. Wear flat bottomed shoes (not thongs!) so when you stand up you will be balanced. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these stretching exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started! The exercises shown are to help strengthen you legs and will need you to concentrate on your balance. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, one leg may be stronger than the other so move slowly. Using your leg muscles will help with your balance and mobility, but they do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one leg exercise a day will give you improvement in your movement over time. So have your hard backed chair or kitchen bench handy for support, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Look, by now you would know that I am not a cardioing -joggy kind of person. Over the last 12 and a bit years I have certainly cardioed in different ways and I know I will never be a runner, I am definitely a walker, not a stroller, or a wanderer, I am a walker with purpose. Everyone needs to have cardio in their life, it makes your heart muscles stronger and on days when the last thing you want to do is cadio, those are the days you really need to cardio, even if it’s just to remind yourself that to be healthy sometimes you have to be uncomfortable. You know like when it’s Pap smear or Prostate test time. Along with cardio the other thing you should have in your fitness plan is some sort of a goal, and always remember your goal is YOUR goal. It is as individual as the freckles on the end of your elbow…. So did you just try to see if you have freckles on your elbow? Of course you can share your goal with others, but reaching that goal will be a different path for each person aiming for it. Even a group goal of, let say, walking 10kms, will be different for each walker. Some

will find it easy, some will love doing it with a group of people, others will want to do it alone and others will want to be part of the group just so they can moan and whinge the whole, long and arduous 10kms. It’s the same 10kms just different people with different levels of fitness and health each requiring a different level of effort. Now being fit and healthy is a goal on itself, but it’s vague. You need to break it down and you need to be realistic about how you will reach it. Back when I weighed 85kgs I just wanted “to get thin and fit” I had no idea what my ideal “fit” or “thin” was, but I did know that’s what I was supposed to want according to the media, so that was my vague goal to aim for. But that’s the problem, because if you don’t know exactly where your goal is how can you accurately aim for it. You need a plan that is going to realistically get you to that goal and I didn’t have one. I was 48, 85kgs (I had been 120kgs) around 50% bodyfat and I was on a hunt for “thin”. First day at the gym I did ONE whole minute of cardio and had

Slightly bend one knee and this leg is your support leg – the one you will be standing on. Keep your other leg as straight as you comfortably can and raise your leg backwards from your hip. Hold for the count of One – Two, slowly lower back down and repeat on this leg as many time as you comfortably can up to 5 times. Repeat with other leg. Rest

SQUAT AND PUSH Stand with your toes in a straight line and your feet should width apart. Slowly squat down like you are about to sit on a chair (you can have a chair behind you if you concerned about your legs supporting you) At the same time raise your arms out to the front with your hands flat Slowly stand back up and return your arms to your sides. Repeat the squat and gentle push slowly, only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

TOE TAPS

Stand behind a step in your home or you can even use a cushion as you will not be standing on the step/cushion. If you want to have more stability you can have a hard back chair next to you or stand next to the kitchen bench. Support yourself with one leg keeping that knee slightly bent. Gently tap the step or cushion with your other toe, do not step on it, and return the foot to the ground. Repeat this with that foot as many times as you feel comfortable with up to 15 times. Rest

to sit with my head between my legs to make sure I didn’t need a bucket. I was using 1kg weights for my exercises and walking around the block felt like a trek to Outer Mongolia. But I was aiming for “thin” so I trekked. Then I found a personal trainer who helped me set realistic achievable goals and fast forward 11 months and I was 70kgs and could zoom on that cardio machine for an hour, loathing every minute mind you. I was using 20kg weights, and realised that my goal of “thin” wasn’t what I wanted! I wanted HEALTHY, tight skin, nice legs and shoulders, and that’s what I made my next goal and so I adjusted my training to get there. Once I got there, my goal became a figure competition. 18 months after I first walked into a gym I walked out onto a stage. I was 9% bodyfat, 49 years old and I thought wow I’ve reached my goal! But my goal moved again, as they do, and after 5 competitions my new goal was to help other people over 50 to feel as fit and as healthy as I now felt, and I’m still doing that. After the year we have all just slogged through happiness is something that many people have lost or maybe forgotten where they left it. But exercising is a great way to uncover your happiness, and one of my new goals. As you can see my goals have definitely changed several times over the last 12+ years. For me these days “happy and healthy” are number one, as I know I can keep

staying strong, balanced and fit and the last thing I want is thin! So I guess what I’m trying to do is encourage you to make realistic goals that take you towards your ultimate goal. Having a goal that is too far away can cause you to never start because you can’t imagine being able to reach it. If my original goal had been to lose 30kgs, do 5 bodybuilding competitions and become a personal trainer, I can almost guarantee that as I sat on that treadmill feeling sick after just one minute walking I would have given up right there. I have learnt that you have to start with a nice close goal, take one day at a time, even the bad days, and just be consistent. By doing that, before you know it you won’t even remember the doubt or fear of starting. What you will remember is that you started, you kept going and you are now fitter, healthier and most of all happier. So find a goal, no matter how small it is, and start working towards it because if you never move towards that first one, you will never reach you dream. Funding for bushfire projects to drive social and economic recovery Bushfire recovery in the Longman and Blair electorates will get a share of almost $2 million as part of $10.7 million in bushfire recovery projects.

James Dawson said that in the future they will provide a landscaped, outdoor seating area so people can have a coffee and a bite to eat while charging their cars.

Member for Longman Terry Young said the fourth and final round of Local Economic Recovery projects was announced today by the Australian and Queensland Governments, under a joint investment of $36.8 million to support recovery in Queensland communities hit hard by the 2019-20 bushfires.

Bride baffled by new park booking system Moreton Bay Regional Council’s “upgraded” computer system has also included changes to their Park Booking System. Previously, if you wanted to book a Park in the Moreton Bay Region you rang the Council, answered a few questions about which park and what time, paid a fee and were allocated a time slot for that space. Council’s new Park Booking System is clumsy, difficult to use, and has more than one “glitch”. If you are having a party, pay the fee and the space is yours – if you can manage the maze that is the online booking system! No guarantee on the day though that the grass will be mowed and that someone won’t already be sitting there and won’t move just because you have booked it – and paid for it!.

For local Beachmere bride Karon Darcy, trying to book a site for her vow renewals went from a nightmare to ridiculous. “I spent some time navigating the Council’s new website and then completing the application. I did have to contact Council staff on a few occasions to get assistance,” Karon said. “Then we discovered we had to pay for a whole day, even though the site lets you nominate a booking of three hours. But, even after we booked the site and paid the

Council staff advised that the requirement to have a $20m Public Liability was not new and had always been in place. However, it had not been enforced until it was included in the Online Booking System.

Karon has cancelled her Park Booking and made alternative arrangements. “You can turn up and use the Park for free, you can use any of the BBQ facilities for free. We could have held a party with just the park booking fee. As soon as I said “wedding” there were all these additional costs.” Karon said. “I am so disappointed that our Vow Renewal Ceremony won’t be overlooking the natural beauty of the Bay and we won’t be able to enjoy any of the parks in our area,” Karon said, “but I am even more disappointed that we won’t be supporting local businesses and that the Council made no effort to support us in doing that”.

Council launches plan to turbocharge economy

Mayor Peter Flannery is coming up to one year in office and like most politicians he is keen to show he is now across his brief and ready to stamp his own mark on the job. Good on him, but no one can say he does things in half measures. Instead of modest midterm regional development planning to grow existing infrastructure and support existing business growth he has gone all out in an ambitious long term Corona Virus recovery plan. The Mayor says that two decades from now Moreton Bay will boast a $40 billion economy, be home to an additional 240,000 people and will have created 100,000 more local jobs. That’s the ambition of the Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020-41, unanimously endorsed by Councillors and launched publicly recently. Mayor Flannery told attending business, political, and community leaders that this is a ‘crossroads moment’ for the region. “Since the outbreak of coronavirus, nothing is business as usual, which is why we’re responding with a plan to transform our economy into a nimble and resilient powerhouse and we’re already on the road to recovery,” he declared. “Our surging population has underpinned the success of this region and made us one of the fastest growing areas in the country, so now we can afford to strategically and deliberately diversify our economy to unlock the jobs and opportunities of tomorrow. “This is a blueprint for our region to evolve and adapt to the challenges of modern market pressures and a changing climate. “I believe we must be single-minded about attracting new industries, advancing established businesses, increasing trade and investment, we must innovate, and we must be willing to take entrepreneurial risks.” The Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020-41 outlines a plan to make Moreton Bay Region bigger, bolder and brighter. • Bigger: our region will become bigger, with our economy reaching $40 billion in 2041, more than double its current size. • Bolder: we act bolder, with the creation of 100,000 new jobs and 16,000 new businesses by 2041. We will focus on ensuring our residents have the necessary skills and knowledge to access these jobs. • Brighter: our region’s future will be brighter, by focusing on our growth and talent and making Moreton Bay one of the top 10 regional knowledge and innovation hubs in Australia. The strategy was developed collaboratively with contributions from local businesses, chambers of commerce, business and industry associations and many other stakeholders. Domino’s Pizza CEO Don Meij, whose company started in Moreton Bay, said the region’s forecast and potential growth was an opportunity to seize.

“When you think about so many other communities, this is one that’s just a rocket ship at the moment so why not lean in and grab a hold of that opportunity,” he said. “This is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and it’s going to be bigger than Tasmania by 2041.” The Moreton Bay Regional Council area is one of the largest and fastest growing local government areas in Australia, with a population of approximately 470,000 that’s projected to grow more than 50 per cent to 690,000 people by 2041. Mayor Flannery said the region still has plenty of room to grow and that the smart money will recognise the opportunities here. “Everyone already knows that our unique combination of affordable housing, employment opportunities, natural environment and Council’s investment in essential infrastructure make this the perfect place to live, work and play,” he said. “What we need investors to understand is our ease of access to markets; like our proximity to the Brisbane CBD, port and airport and the fact that our transport network provides access to one of the largest workforces in the country, with more than one million workers just a 30-minute drive from our region. “Then of course there’s the sleeping giant that’s about to awaken, The Mill at Moreton Bay, which is expected to deliver 8,600 ongoing jobs and add $813 million into the regional economy per year on average (once fully realised). “This 460-hectare site holds untold potential as the largest greenfield innovation precinct in Australia with a developable space twice the size of the Brisbane CBD. “On behalf of MBRC I want to thank the 300 businesses that engaged with Council and contributed to the REDS strategy. “There has never been a better time to borrow or build, to create jobs and to strengthen our economy. “So don’t be left on the bench, this is your opportunity to join #teammoretonbay as we embark on the journey to make our region bigger, bolder, brighter.” The Local and Surrounds has noted that Redcliffe, Caboolture and the hinterland have been very active in consulting with Council over the Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020-41 however the campaign press release was short on detail about the Bribie area. It is imperative that our business groups engage with council and lobby for our fair share of investment in the area. Trade your sea change for a tree change for a few days and think about a stay at an alpine cabin at the Bunya Mountains in the coming cooler months. The Bunya Mountains are a three hour drive from Bribie through the picturesque

towns of Kilcoy, Yarraman and Nanango. Up the Blackbutt Range the air seems cooler already and then you turn up the Kingaroy-Cooyar Road to climb to an elevation of 975M above sea level, arriving at the Bunya Mountains. The Bunya Mountains is a spectacular wilderness range forming an isolated

The entrance to the walking track is near the accommodation centre and shop on Bunya Mountains Road. The Bunya Mountains National Park (declared in 1908) is Queensland’s second oldest national park. It shelters the world’s largest stand of ancient bunya pines Araucaria bidwillii and more than 30 rare and threatened species. The bunya pines tower over tall, moist rainforest along the range crest, while hoop pines dominate dry rainforest on lower slopes. Subtropical rainforest, once the most widespread rainforest community in Queensland, grows along the range crest and upper parts of the eastern side of the mountains. Semievergreen vine thickets and at least seven other types of dry rainforest grow on the lower or western slopes. The park's forests shelter rare and threatened plants including orchids and small herbs. Natural grassland containing rare grass species are scattered across the mountains. The national park also protects open eucalypt forests, woodlands, brigalow scrub and the largest protected areas of vine thickets dominated by bottle trees in Australia. The park is home to about 120 species of birds and many species of mammals, frogs and reptiles. Several rare and threatened animals live here including sooty owls, powerful owls, the black-breasted button quail, a skink species and a number of mammals. Long revered by generations of Aboriginal people—travelling long distances every few years for feasts and celebrations coinciding with mass crops of bunya 'nuts'—the Bunya Mountains are for all a worthy destination. Picnic and camping areas and more than 35km of walking tracks make it a wonderful place at which to escape the heat, or the hustle and bustle of modern life. So check the back of your wardrobe for your favourite old jumper, select your best red wine and pack some matches for a trip to the country that will be the tree change you have been searching for today.

The immense subtropical range of cool, green rainforest, eucalypt forests and woodlands is home to the world’s largest forest of bunya pines. Dome shaped bunya pines graciously raise their majestic heads above the forest canopy crowning a magnificent green splendour. High altitude grasslands include rare grasses of international interest. The Bunya Mountains include Mount Mowbullan and Mount Kiangarow and features panoramic mountain scenery and breathtaking views over the South Burnett region and Darling Downs plains. Because of its height, it is generally at least 5 – 10C cooler than the surrounding plains all year round. The Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre manages all 104 cabins along the ridge line and down the side of the mountain overlooking the floodplain. Bookings can be made at bunyamountains.com.au. I would recommend the Alpine Cabin with two bedrooms, fireplace, large veranda, pool table and entertaining area. All firewood is provided but remember to bring some

Beachmere U3A Growing Strong Beachmere U3A opened it’s doors in January 2021 as U3A Beachmere Inc. This milestone was achieved in November 2020 closely followed by the election of a new Committee. The Committee members have a range of skills well suited to their new roles and describe themselves as a friendly, motivated group. “We look forward to assisting the members build on what had been established by the outgoing committee”, Chair, Barb Woodroffe said. “Bribie U3A, Caboolture U3A and U3A Qld Network have been, and continue to be, a tremendous support and source of encouragement.” “As Beachmere U3A Inc is newly incorporated, members are really joining for the first time. Cranky Lizard admits that this question is provocative. It is, however, relevant. After observing, open-mouthed, and in increasing horror at the cartoon show that has become this Nation’s current affairs over the last three/four weeks, Cranky Lizard decided enough was enough. In a desperate attempt to find some commonsense, Cranky Lizard climbed on top of a large drone and proceeded, metaphorically, to float across the broad expanse of this beautiful, old continent, watching the circus unfold below. It proved to be a sobering and shocking experience. Cranky Lizard was left anxious about the quality of public life and the institutions that manage it all. Strong Easterly winds quickly floated the drone West where Cranky Lizard was able to watch the self-destruction of the WA Liberal Party, a slow-motion train wreck that had been some time in unfolding. A combination of the sad gratitude of the electorate to a ‘border closure Premier’ and an implosion of conservative parties as they battled internal strife, religious, right-wing, hard-line politruks and an outbreak of egos the size of Gibraltar. It was a notable example of the failure of the conservative parties in politics to provide a credible Opposition – the Western Australian Labor Party were certain to cruise to an historic victory with a huge and embarrassing majority. It seems as if Her Majesty’s Opposition may be reduced to single figures, although for the sake of good Government, Cranky Lizard hopes not!

And, it will not be all the wonderful with the re-elected Premier faced with a large, rambunctious backbench, all believing that they are entitled to a Cabinet role, and all carrying the Field Marshall’s baton in their little union supplied backpacks! Some good days to come for Western Australia. Seasonal winds spiralling aimlessly about drifted the metaphorical drone back to the East, where it passed over the embarrassingly quiet South Australian political scene. In South Australia, much is not what it seems. The deceptive quiet is smoothing over an unpleasant little mess with travel allowances of the current conservative Government MP’s. To keep us all on our literary toes, Cranky Lizard describes this nasty little mess as an imbroglio over travel allowances for country dwelling MPs [don’t say that you

Do we live in a modern nationstate in a critical geographical region…or a Fool’s Paradise ?? have heard this before?]. This imbroglio has reduced a Government with a working majority to a minority Government of one!

How? Well, it seems as if a few, not all of them, but a few, boys from the bush can’t get it right when they claim for travel allowances – they just can’t do it! They think that staying at your mate’s place and claiming for staying at a motel is clever, or maybe just stupid? Whatever they think, they have been caught out publicly. So there they are! In the pubic spotlight, pouting little lips claiming that this was an honest mistake. Cranky Lizard calls BS! This was an attempt to dud the taxpayer, and they were sprung, as they should be. The fact that some politicians try to dud the voters is not new, or sadly enough, not surprising. What is relevant here is that these duds are the ones that make laws, in South Australia, for the people of the State to live by…now that should give you confidence in the quality of the legislators? Cranky Lizard wonders “are they paid that poorly that they have to shonk their travel allowances? “

The answer, of course, is no. They are just rather dumb shonks. At this point of the metaphorical floating adventure, Cranky Lizard was feeling hugely depressed. This beautiful old continent, viewed from the air as a vast and magnificent land seemed to suffer from a lack of quality leadership from a conservative political viewpoint. But. Hope’ springeth eternal in the human breast. ‘and so Cranky Lizard floated even further East, where, horror of all horrors, the crazed Democratic Republic Victoria crouched in its own mist of myths, legends, false news, bright-eyed little media buttons, bumbling, overpaid mission commanders of the public service, topped off with the all-time, global communication guru, Commander Dan! Cranky Lizard threw up a blitz of ‘Hail

Mary’s, and the drone floated North East, away from the Victorian Jurassic Park. Cranky Lizard was too young and innocent to deal with that throbbing nonsense in Victoria. Drifting North along the superb NSW south coast, Cranky Lizard could experience the slightest twinge of optimism as the tables of New South Wales slowly unfolded beneath the drone. Hovering and moving slowly North over Australia’s oldest State, Cranky Lizard noticed an air of calm confidence about the land. Life was proceeding as expected; trade was happening, pubs were open, fishermen were fishing, farmers were farming, traffic jams were jamming, the place was moving along at a reasonable pace. It all looked good in NSW – “hope doth indeed springeth eternal in the human breast. “thought Cranky Lizard. Although, there appeared to be some form of disturbance over Cranky Lizard’s left shoulder. Querulous eyes turned to the North from the drone, and there, for all to see, was what fighter pilots call a ‘fur ball.’ A whirling, twirling spiral of dust, musical notes, bits of paper, fragments of false news, distressed faces flickering past in the vortex, pompous farting sounds and flashes of lightning in the dust clouds. Instinct told Cranky Lizard that this was just another day in the Nation’s capital, Canberra and that to drift the drone over that stuff was plain, flat out, suicidal. So, the drone, with Cranky Lizard still clinging to the top, continued North into the huge, tempestuous, primary industry endowed State of Queensland.

And there, of course, there were no surprises. Images from Brisbane city fizzed up to the drone of a mean faced politician tearing up an agreement with NSW to pay for some quarantine costs incurred by that State, on behalf of Queensland, to keep them safe from the predations of COVID-19. It appeared as if the politician was setting new low standards of moral

behaviour; and, no one was surprised! Well, except for members of his political party, when they found out that a previous Treasurer of the State Labor Government had agreed to pay the bill. But they were not going to be impressed by decent standards of behaviour. No Sir, not them. Cranky Lizard is aware that Queensland is a Labour state when it comes to State Government. The conservative parties just do not seem to be able to put together a credible political alternative. Cranky Lizard hears the sharp intakes of breath from the conservative mob when they read this, if they do? But, facts are facts, and to deny the reality leaves Queensland without a decent State Opposition, and, frankly, the citizens of Queensland deserve better than what they are getting from the LNP in Queensland, at a state level. Cranky Lizard is aware that another one of the thousands upon thousands of postelectoral reviews [ again, metaphorically speaking.] is being conducted by the LNP and Cranky Lizard hopes that some hard heads prevail. To speak the words and make the promises, but do nothing in the end except to protect privileged jobs and influence, is just putting lipstick on a pig ! Not a lot of point to that. So, in the end, as the drone settled to Earth and Cranky Lizard skipped nimbly off into the mulga scrub, the conclusion was that we are close to a fool’s paradise rather than a modern nation-state; but still a place worth fighting for and a magnificent place to live. Cranky Lizard concludes that generally speaking, at a National level, our politicians from all sides of the spectrum fight each other like scorpions until both sides cannot move. Then they depart the arena, having achieved nothing at all !! There are apparent exceptions to that comment; Cranky Lizard invites you to ponder on that. In keeping with Cranky Lizard’s determination not to contribute to political nonsense, Cranky Lizard can find no evidence to support the low-grade rumours regarding early By-Elections in a couple of local state seats – no evidence whatsoever! Cranky Lizard reminds you all not to forget the 800+ dead Australians in Victoria…no one is speaking for them and how they suffered in the worst industrial stuff-up in the history of the Nation. Enjoy your days.

COVID 12 months on!

For Australians, COVID first started to change our lives in March 2020. Like most life changing events I remember where I was. At the Gold Coast Caravan Expo and staying in apartment style accommodation. The event was attended by thousands of people in close contact, many of which were in the high risk age category of 70+. This event could have been a ‘hotspot’, but it wasn’t. In the following weeks and months, we would see lockdowns, quarantines, Australian citizens stranded overseas, we were limited to only leaving home for ‘essential services’, we even had a temporary 150km travel ban, kids were home schooled, working from home became mainstream and cities were basically deserted. We were told not to wear masks, then to wear masks and then to only wear masks in certain regions. Our lifestyle and livelihood was being determined by the Chief Medical Officer. The Federal Government were on the front foot with financial packages including jobkeeper and jobseeker. Businesses were given assistance and people were offered the opportunity to access their superannuation. During this initial few months most businesses went extremely quiet and others ended up closing their doors temporarily or permanently. There was serious concern for the economy. We saw the USA, England and other countries struggling (and continuing to do so) with the pandemic. Other countries we have barely heard about. I often wonder about Bali with their reliance on tourism how they must be going.

Hindsight shows that the Australian Federal Government essentially did the right things to get the country through an extremely difficult 12 months. After this 12 month period, only time will tell, but there are certainly positive signs. We had the Queensland Premier and Chief Medical Officer holding daily press conferences up until the election on October 31 – and then they mysteriously stopped after the landslide election victory. This was the first election I had seen first-hand that was run and won on a fear campaign. This and an inept opposition that offered a lack of alternative policies. Locally, we await our promised hospital, more traffic lights and a long list of pre-election promises. Hindsight says the elections (local and state) should have been postponed. There is no doubt on this. Forcing people to vote in a global pandemic when fear is in play is not right. This was a poor decision. When you look at the figures alone for our state, you see 6 deaths and 1329 cases. Is that right? Can that be right? Comparably we had 508 suspected suicides from January 1 to August 31

2020, 276 people died on our roads, 55 women died from domestic violence nationally and the big C, again nationally is the big one with estimates of around 50,000 deaths. There is some perspective. However, that perspective comes from the success our state has had against COVID. Compared that to over 800 deaths in Victoria where they have experienced a much more difficult time with lockdowns and so forth. I’m not sure how Premier Dan Andrews still has a job, I can only assume it is a tough job to lose and nobody else wants it. When you look globally that is when you realise, we as a country have dodged a bullet. Globally there have been over 113m cases and 2.53m deaths. I know at this stage some people will slice and dice those figures and quote the age groups and we have all heard the stories about COVID being the cause of death officially when it may have been a combination of factors and/or a pre-existing condition. The fact is that COVID 19 and the flow on effects from the changes to our lifestyle and livelihood has changed the world. No matter where you sit on the fence it is like nothing most of us have seen. We have been lucky. Extremely lucky. This pandemic had the potential to grind our country to a halt. But it didn’t and it hasn’t. We have got through it, or it appears we have at this stage. So, it is 12 months on. Where are things at today? Well, there is a vaccination (two coming to Australia). A vaccination that is dividing our country. Anti-vaxxers, people keen to get it, people scared, conspiracy theorists, those that want to know how a vaccination can be developed and tested in 12 months and others that don’t really care and will simply do as they are told. The vaccination is being rolled out from only a few days before when you will read this. First in the line will be our frontline workers, followed be the elderly and at risk groups, then basically everyone else over 18. Those under 18, we don’t know yet. And you will probably have to get two shots at the Sunshine Coast Hospital. Between when this article is written and when you read it you will be inundated with an advertising blitz promoting the vaccine and how you go about getting it. It has started already. There is so much information about the vaccine it is confusing. Can you still catch COVID? How long does it last? Are there side effects? What is the plan for children? Too many questions and not enough answers at this stage but it should all filter through in the coming weeks. The good news? 12 months on and there is light at the end of the tunnel. At least we can now be positive. Lockdowns and border closures should be things of the past. Snap decision making from our leaders should also disappear as we now have 12 months of experience dealing with this thing.

The vaccine is voluntary at this stage. It is anticipated between seventy and eighty percent of Australians (excluding children at this stage) will get the vaccine/s. What the future holds for the ‘voluntary’ status is unknown. For instance, overseas travel, schooling, visiting aged care centres and so forth. Further outbreaks will place pressure on this ‘voluntary’ status. What could we do differently with the wonderful gift of hindsight? The first thing that comes to mind is that it shouldn’t be political. A global pandemic should not be political, and it should certainly not be a political issue and the deciding factor in an election. Just separate the two. A national cabinet or emergency response unit should have been the leader on this issue and provide direction to the States. Our country is a country and shows us that maybe we don’t need 3 levels of government. There should have been more compassion for those dying and their loved ones. And certainly not quarantine in high density hotel complexes with part time security guards. This was probably the biggest failure of the 12 months. I recall one period where we couldn’t travel and then all of a sudden we could and there were thousands of people on the beaches of Bribie Island, a location with one of the oldest average populations in Australia and the highest at risk group of COVID - one day nobody could come there from outside the area and the next day there were thousands. This didn’t feel right, it made me feel sick in the stomach. We also had the changing rules for churches, weddings, funerals and home gatherings. And of course, the no dancing rules. Visiting aged care facilities to see loved ones was challenging as the sector was struggling even before a global pandemic. All at the same time as the AFL grand final and their associated VIP’s flying into Brisbane, millionaires jumping onboard their boats crossing borders, actors and celebrities getting exemptions and the list goes on. And that is only what we heard about! Goodness knows what else happened that we didn’t hear about. Who would forget the supermarkets during these times? Toilet paper shortages, the less said about that the better. Meat, bread, milk shortages and empty shelves. This certainly wasn’t what we were used to in Australia.

Do you remember the story about the kid that couldn’t have a party, so his mum drove him around in her car with happy birthday writing all over it? I hope that kid gets a party this year.

What will your memories of COVID be from the last 12 months? Who is still suffering? Movie theatres, cruise ships, international travel agents, those influenced by business or international trade/tourism, those who lost loved ones and couldn’t say farewell. Entertainers and the arts industry have also struggled. Restaurants, takeaways and cafes have certainly suffered. I’m sure there are more. One area that has been somewhat neglected is that there is now a housing shortage in many areas. The dynamics of the property market have changed from COVID and the outcome is a shortage of affordable rental properties. When you hear of so many applicants for rental properties you know there is a problem. This is a serious matter and should be right at the top of priorities for our elected leaders. If we don’t already, we will have a housing crisis on our hands. And the solution isn’t just to approve more land development because the timelines are too long to get new accommodation constructed. This issue needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency with creative outcomes. Our economy generally is on the mend with some industries booming. All we can do now is make up our own minds regarding the vaccination/s, get on with our lives, appreciate our loved ones, support those in need, do the right thing and look forward to the future and hope that it is all under control and that we don’t see anything like it again. They say that time heals wounds, it also gives us the benefit of hindsight and I’m sure that if we had our time again, many things would have been done differently. It is panic stations with a global pandemic, and it isn’t really something you can prepare for. At the end of the day, we were global leaders in terms of the outcome. But at what cost? Only time will tell. On a final note, at this stage vaccinations are a personal choice and no matter what that choice is people should not be ridiculed or discriminated for that choice. Green Light For Anzac Commemorations Queensland’s Anzac Day commemorations will proceed as normal. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced this morning that dawn services, marches and other commemorations can go ahead.

“The communities and our veterans will be able to step out with their comrades so a great day for Queensland.” RSL South-eastern Sub-branch President Kerry Gallagher said it allowed the community to show their respect to service men and women and their families. “Veterans get together one day a year and march down the streets of their town, the one they gave service to, and be able to catch up with their mates,” he said. The 2019 commemorations were crowdfree events because of the risk of spreading COVID.

The Premier gave credit for the decision to Queensland’s success in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

The popular ‘Light Up the Dawn’ initiative will continue.

“Every single Queenslander responded to the call to stop the spread of the virus,” the Premier said.

The Premier said the return of other Anzac services allowed the community to pay further respect to servicemen, service women and their families.

“That has allowed us to ease our restrictions further and faster throughout the pandemic. “It means we can gather in our streets and at cenotaphs to mark the sacrifices of previous generations, serving men and women and their families. “This freedom should be commemorated and never forgotten. “I discussed Anzac Day with Dr Young and she is fully supportive of allowing crowds back to mark this special day.” Outdoor events including dawn services will proceed without the need for check-in procedures. Indoor events, such at RSL Clubs, will require normal sign-ins. The Premier said Dr Young was confident, should contact tracing be required, those attending services would step forward. RSL Queensland State President Tony Ferris applauded the decision. “The RSL is overjoyed,” he said.

“Marches and dawn services allow servicemen and women and their families the opportunity to gather together,” the Premier said. “It also allows us in the general community to show our respect and thanks. “I am pleased this special day can return as it was. “Lest we forget.”

Tough new Youth Justice reforms introduced to Parliament

The State Government has introduced a comprehensive package of Youth Justice reforms that will target hardcore youth criminals who repeatedly offend and put the community at risk. Under the reforms introduced to Parlia-

ment today, courts will get more powers allowing them to: • Require Fitting of Electronic monitor ing devices (GPS Trackers) As a condition of bail for recidivist high risk offenders aged 16 and 17 • Create a Presumption Against Bail For youth offenders arrested for com mitting further serious indictable offences (eg breaking and entering) while on bail • Seek assurances from parents and guardians That bail conditions will be complied with before an offender is released The government will also strengthen existing bail laws to provide further guidance to the courts. The Youth Justice Act will be amended to include a reference to the community being protected from recidivist youth offenders in the Charter of Youth Justice Principles The government is also enshrining in legislation the principle that offending whilst on bail is an aggravating circumstance when the court is imposing a sentence. To prevent crime: • Police will be given enhanced powers to use metal detecting wands to target knife crime on the Gold Coast • Anti-hooning laws will be strengthened to hold the registered owner of a vehi cle responsible except where the vehicle is stolen or the owner can identify another driver and • A parliamentary inquiry will examine the implementation of remote engine immobilisers Police Minister Mark Ryan said the government had listened to the community and was acting decisively. “This is about targeting the hardcore repeat offenders – those 10 per cent of youth offenders who are frequently putting the community at risk. “That is why we are making these changes

to bail laws. “Ten per cent of all youth offenders account for 48 per cent of all youth crime. “It is this group we will target with all the legislative and front-line strategies at our disposal.” The Police Minister also said it was important to understand the false commentary from the LNP. “The LNP has claimed they will “bring back breach of bail”. “The fact is, however, “breach of bail” never existed under the previous LNP Government. “There are many ways to breach bail. “Failure to comply with a curfew, failure to reside at an approved address. “None of these breaches were ever an offence under the Newman Government – only committing an offence while on bail. “The fact is the previous Newman LNP Government introduced an unworkable law called “Committing an offence while on bail”. “This law did not work as a deterrent and was not regularly used by the courts given it was so ineffective. “In fact, the offender would, as a consequence of the LNP’s law, receive a lesser penalty as the court could not treat an offence committed on bail as “circumstance of aggravation”. Youth Justice Minister, Leanne Linard, said the new measures build on the Government’s five-point action plan announced in March last year, with $550 million in Youth Justice reforms already underway. “Those reforms have led to a 23% decrease in the numbers of youth offenders. “For example, our Transition 2 Success Program has a 67 per cent success rate. “About 187 young people have attended and 67 per cent have not re-offended” “Former Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson will report on the efficacy of the measures in six months.”

5 Simple Steps to Growing Tomatoes in Containers Containers come to the rescue and offer great alternatives for gardening in small spaces. Even if you have space for a garden plot, having this culinary staple nearby is worth adding a container or two near your kitchen door. Tomato container gardening is easy, particularly when you follow a few basic tips. Select the Right Container Tomatoes can grow quite large. Unless you’re growing a dwarf variety, you should use a 5-gallon or larger container. Consider plastic pots—they are lightweight and easier to move than ceramic. Make sure the container has drainage holes in the bottom. If it doesn’t, drill three to five holes in the bottom of the container before planting. Select the Right Soil and Fertilizer Look for a good quality potting mix for your container; never use garden soil. Good potting mix that drains well while holding some moisture is one of the keys to successful tomato container gardening. Before adding your tomato plant, add a slow-release fertilizer into the potting mix.

Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer every two weeks. How to Plant Your Tomato Container Bury the roots and a few inches of the stem of a young tomato plant in the potting mix. Unless you are planting dwarf or patio varieties, add a plant stake or tomato cage for support. Push a 4-foot-tall plant stake into the pot, about 4 inches from the plant. As the plant grows, pull the stems toward the stake and loosely tie with twine. If using a tomato cage, simply place it over the plant. Select a Sunny Spot Tomatoes love the sun. Place the container in a spot where plants will get six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Water Frequently Containers dry out more quickly than an in-ground garden, so it’s important to check them daily. During hot, dry weather, expect to water tomatoes daily. When watering, add enough water to allow a small amount to drain out the bottom of the container. To reduce diseases, avoid spraying the foliage.

March Fishing Report Just when we were beginning to despair, the fishing has come good!

January was a disappointing month, for fishing, especially in the Passage - lots of juvenile fish, and a big variety of species, but a very low ratio of legal-sized catches. Hot weather conditions warmed the waters and hampered the chances of a haul of fish. But, almost straight after the kids all headed to school, it was back on. Rainfall for the past month has been well below average, with barely decent downpours a fortnight apart. Very light easterlies brought some afternoon respite from the heat but did nothing to help cool the water. Warm water holds lower levels of dissolved oxygen, so less oxygen available for the fish, which makes them less active and less hungry. The best fishing has been during the spring tides, at the start of February and around the 13th, when there has been more movement of the water, giving the Passage a little more oxygenation. Writing this just before the next spring tides on 27th/28th, I’m hoping for another great weekend’s fishing to finish off the month. Ningi Creek continues to yield up some decent flathead. Early in the month, Denise took home a 69cm “fathead” – really solid! James’ gang brought in a few in the 40-50cm range, but there have been plenty of them too big, including Samantha and Craig’s 90cm, caught at their “secret spot”, between the Avon wreck and Ningi, using pillies for bait. They got to keep another flathead(60cm) and some bream from the same spot, but let a 1.5m shovelnose see another day. Plenty of big venus tuskfish are being caught near the Ningi Creek yellow marker, prawns by far the most successful bait. Elizabeth kept five big tuskfish; Min had tuskfish and sweetlip. Greg caught four, drifting past Turner’s Camp on a falling tide – one of them over 45cm, as well a heap of tripod fish, a leatherjacket that never seems to make much size but is certainly plentiful. There’s been a good mix of other fish around the mouth of Ningi, as well. Lucas’ first ever fishing trip was a good example – he, Tom and Michael brought in bream, tarwhine and trevally – eight all up, and good sizes. There were plenty they threw back, “just legal” but not worth keeping, as well as two sting-rays. Worms and pillies were the bait. Speaking of sting-rays; there have been some huge rays and shovelnose sharks caught in the Passage, this past month, mainly around Ningi Creek. Shane is sure his shovelnose was more than 2 metres; John hooked up six of them – “all big ones”. On the other side of the Passage, John kept catching tripod fish, wondering if it was just the same one over and over. Probably not, there’s no shortage of them lately! Banksia Beach has been good for more than just tripod fish, though. North from Pacific Harbour and up past the Avon to White Patch, there is a great variety of fish, including the usual suspects of sweetlip, moses perch, trevally and snapper. Jake was happy enough with his 38cm snapper, caught on a good tide

of mackerel around the south end of the island and offshore from Bribie.

There have been a couple of fish that I had to look up my fishing books for – one was the fringe-finned trevally, the other is known as the blue trevally. Interestingly, a recent report from the Restore Pumicestone Passage project points to some good news in that regard.

Lastly, two definite barramundi hook-ups in the Passage. I saw a photo of one, more than a metre long, looked to be up around White Patch - happy to report that both went back in the water.

This group has installed those oyster-shell cages just off Kakadu Beach, north of Pacific Harbour. According to the latest results, “30 months post-installation of the first reef units, (fish) numbers have simply exploded. Now, the reef site contains a fish assemblage that (has) 3.8 times more (species) and (more than 10 times the original) fish abundance. This constitutes a clear statistically significant increase in the abundance and diversity of fish congregating at the reef site. The addition of more reef units every year adds to the overall carrying capacity of the reef restoration area. (Studying the data) suggests that the reef (has not functioned simply as a fish attracting device, but) has increased the overall carrying capacity of southern Pumicestone Passage.” It’s fantastic to see such promising results so early into this project, and it bodes well for the health and fishability of the Passage in the future. Further south, and more good news: Geoff and his mate pulled up 50 sand-crabs over 10 days (and almost as many under-sized put back); there are heaps of hungry bream at the bridge, and lots of accounts
