To celebrate our 50th issue, the LOCAL News, Island and Surrounds has a new community Podcast Show and it’s now up and running. Check out our facebook page and our website. Matt Owen is brain behind our podcast, at this stage Matt will be doing the producing and interviews until it grows. We will be speaking to many local identities, show casing locally owned businesses in all industries, up to date news and discussing issues in our region, whether it be canal levies, Bribie Island Road and of course the contentious issue of our Bridge. Check it out and there will be something for everyone on the show. Regarding the letter to Island and Surrounds containing false accusations by Don Sandstone Point, 8/4/2020. In 42 years the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association has never lobbied to close off the Bribie Bridge from the mainland. I wrote privately (22/03/20) to the Premier and our MPs to close Bribie Island to non-essential visitors in response to thousands of day trippers visiting Bribie’s beaches, ignoring advice from Medical Experts and Scientists to “stay home”. Bribie’s postcode has one of the most vulnerable populations in Australia to COVID 19. Diane Oxenford PresidentBribie Island Environmental Protections Association. It was a year or two back the State Government of Tasmania announced it was considering banning gaming machines " pokies " throughout the state. And what a noble exercise that was on behalf of the good citizens of Tasmania. Retired senator and political commentator Graham Richardson pointed out in his column in the national daily that decision would impact on every consumer within the rest of Australia in that the loss of millions of dollars of tax from State gambling revenue would force Tasmania to seek a larger share of GST funded grants. The rest of Australia would be funding Tasmania's principle. And so it is I wrote if a Council withdraws a levy from a section of the community and suffers a loss of revenue from that decision that Council will seek to recoup that revenue from elsewhere within the community. You can work out the rest. All other factors are a side show. And that is all I have to say about the matter. Thank you all. Paul Mc Ellister Dear Editor, I am horrified with our current local dog rangers; I have been living in my rental home for over 5 years and never had an issue. The NEW Rangers decided to come onto my property where I live on my own with my dog and told me to tie my dog up. I used to know most of the rangers, and I have never had a problem with them before. They knew my dog and also knew that she never leaves my side and does not wander and never has. Now I received a notice a few days later saying if I don’t put a fence up then I will have pay $6672.50 and they gave me a week to do this. Obviously, the departments of MBRC do not speak to each other because I have now been advised by MBRC that if I put a fence up, I will have to apply for an approval and that may take months. The stupidity of the young new rangers sending me this notice in the mail was just malicious and nasty instead of working with me as a senior and in a rental property. As a senior person who volunteers with many local communities, I am very offended. Pretty hard to get $6672.50 out of someone who simply does not have it. This is a rort from MBRC and blatantly ripping off our community. I am so sick of being intimidated by these rogue rangers here. Robert Shipman.

We need to remember it can be both Women and Men who suff er Domestic Violence
This was written in as a letter to the Editor, and yes Domestic Violence can happen to both Men and Women. Domestic violence is a scourge in our society and impacts many lives. Hairdressers with Heart, Red Benches and White ribbon initiatives are doing a marvellous job bringing the issue out into the open. However, the main focus seems to be on women. High profile cases like Rosie Batty and Hanna Clark and her three beautiful daughters are brought into the spotlight and of course there has been a tragic loss of young beautiful lives.
However, let me remind you that females are often abusive too. Men are less likely to speak out as it is not the macho thing to do, admitting you are being bashed by the little woman. Even in my own family, I have a daughter in law with post-natal depression who is refusing treatment and my son is being emotionally abused and berated all the time. She has even started on me with nasty verbal abuse. My brother’s wife has early onset dementia (late 50's) and psychosis and receives treatment but the medications are no longer holding her stable and my dear brother has been physically and emotionally abused for many years. Neither of these two relatives would talk about it for years, but I noticed a change in them both (sadness, not laughing anymore and just not being their bubbly selves). Eventually, after a lot of prodding, they opened up to me about what was going on and we were able to talk about the problem. My son refuses to leave his relationship as he has two beautiful children aged two and four to consider. My heart is breaking watching these two males go through such abuse. When you hear how the Coronavirus is creating a lot of anxiety and tension as we face the unknown, extra unemployment etc. it is always stated in the media that women and children will be abused. This is definitely not the case as women can be extremely abusive also as I have found out from my own family and within my nursing career. I urge you all to monitor your family and friends, see if you notice a change in their behaviour and if so please reach out to them. I urge you all to be kind to each other during our current coronavirus crisis whether you are male or female. An act of kindness can go such long way in brightening someone’s day. Fran Murdoch

4 On 29th March 2020 as the global pandemic set in, our business community was asked to conform to the most radical operating restrictions leading many businesses to shut their doors in a hope that one day they may have an opportunity to re-open and resurrect themselves. There are very few that have escaped the effect of the pandemic, however the hardest hit in our community are the hospitality and tourism businesses.
Across Australia, the pandemic has forced a staggering 70% of businesses in the hospitality area to reduce the hours of their staff and 43% to either sack workers or place them on unpaid leave. It is unprecedented and has placed business owners and their families in an uncompromising position with little understanding of how they may recover or if a recovery may be possible at all.
Without doubt, the Federal, State Governments and local council stimulus packages have been a welcome and necessary relief. These have included increases in healthcare services, tax relief, wage subsidies, cash payments for businesses, and cash bonuses for welfare recipients. Those business that are open have benefited from the recent Job Keeper package which has allowed some businesses to re-engage stood down employees based on limited hours.

Recently I had the pleasure to meet three Bribie Island business owners from the Sylvan Beach Food Precinct located at Marine Parade, Sylvan Beach. Ahmet Turkkan and Melanie Bell are business partners and operate The Little Mexico and Sunset Pier Café and Andy Huang is the owner of Sylvan Beach Seafood Restaurant. Firstly, let me express how hard it is to look at the faces of three Australians knowing how dramatically their lives have changed in the past 6 weeks. A change that effects their home, families, staff and future prosperity. One of the hardest things for people who work in the hospitality industry is to present themselves to customers every day with a positive and happy persona. Afterall, they are in the service industry, an industry that is made or broken on customer experience and the quality of products delivered. Mel, Ahmet and Andy are clearly born to the hospitality industry – they are passionate, creative optimistic humans dedicated to providing a special experience for the Bribie Community but deep inside they are hurting emotionally and mentally – when you sit with them for a few minutes, their words are honest and measured and their eyes speak of pain and fear.
Fresh Seafood will soon be available For 3 weeks we had no business and we thought we would need to close, however Mel, Ahmet and our team decided that we would keep our businesses going to support the community and to make sure that we maintained some sort of momentum. It was hard because we cannot plan for the future. We do not know when or how we will be allowed to operate our restaurant in the future. It is particularly hard on the café that relies so much on their breakfast clientele.”
Ahmet said, “When the business shut down in March, I was guttered because Mel and I put so much hard work into it. We are worried about what will happen once everything comes back to normal. We are worried that we are not going to get back to where we were initially because the shop is only 6-8 months old. The businesses are still in a growing stage – they are still crawling instead of walking. The Café model is based on our customers sitting

Mel said, “This is a stressful period for our business and family. We created The Little Mexicano to provide a new style of food on Bribie Island which has slowly becoming known by our community. The current business operating restrictions have impacted on each business, however

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also, with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate. Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project. “We need the State Government to value small businesses and I urge the Premier and her Government to start backing them,” Ms Wilson said.
Six hundred and seventy days have past since the Federal Government announced an injection of $20 million for vital upgrades of Bribie Island Road, part of the State Controlled Road Network.
“We can’t afford to have the State Government ignoring these businesses”.
Last month I put a question on notice forward to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, asking him the date of when he submitted the Queensland Government's project proposal report to the Federal Government. This process is part of the administrative requirements to enable the Federal Government to release the funds to Queensland and thus onto Bribie Island Road upgrade construction.
Ms Wilson said small businesses were the backbone of Pumicestone’s economy.
“There are more than 438,000 small businesses in Queensland, including thousands right here in Pumicestone, and they are doing it tough right now.
“We need to work together as a community to mount pressure on the State Government to increase supports to our small businesses.
“I’m asking locals to work with me and send a message to the Premier that she must act now! “It’s time that Pumicestone’s small businesses get the same support that others are receiving in every other state.”

And what this has shown is that even when the Feds bail them out, the Palaszczuk Labor Government does not care enough about Pumicestone to get cracking. “The process is until the Department of Transport and Main Roads submits the Project Proposal Report to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack’s office, the project funding of $20 million cannot be released and therefore the project cannot be commenced. “The State Government knows that this is the process and yet they are holding this up. The Project Proposal Report is a submission from the States which outlines the scope of works, benefits and costs and indicative delivery timeframe
“I am asking the State Government to tell us where this report is. What is holding it up? Why are you denying the people of Longman this essential Bribie Island Road upgrade? This upgrade will create much-needed jobs and boost economic growth including supporting tourism in the future.” Mr Young said there had been a lot of conjecture regarding the funding and responsibility around the upgrade of Bribie Island Road and which level of Government is holding the project up. “It is a state election year this year and I truly hope they have not been holding this project up so they can announce its commencement closer to October to gain political advantage at the expense of our constituents’ needs. That would be reprehensible,” Mr Young said. “As the Federal Member for Longman, I have taken to digging in order to find out the truth because this upgrade needs to happen and it needs to happen today.” Mr Young said he has been in constant contact with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and the Deputy Prime Minister and has

L ib e r t y – T o le r a n c e – D ig n it y These three words are the essence of our democracy. An assumption that these fundamentals exist, are understood and are protected in our Commonwealth, is essential to the proper function of Government.
In Australia, the Government's govern, Police enforce legislation, law courts dispense justice, denying personal freedom when necessary, because our citizens' consent to them doing so!
Broad community acceptance and trust of our elected representatives and the authority they exercise over us is a matter of consent by the citizens. If that trust is broken, corrupted or frittered away by petty and irritating bureaucracy, then widespread anarchy waits for us all. It is a precious jewel this trust.
Trust must be earned – it can never be assumed.
During this trying period of personal quarantine, the Commonwealth National Cabinet has put in place, through various States and Territory Governments, some laws restricting the movements of every citizen – for the common purpose of preventing the spread of COVID-19 within the community and throughout the Nation. And that is good.
And. As usual, the task of enforcing this legislation falls upon the shoulders of our various State and Territory Police Forces. So far, so good.
But this wretched disease is placing an enormous strain on people and their personal lives. Businesses have closed, the entertainment and hospitality industries have been pretty much obliterated for the time being, as is the airline industry, and this is not easy to accept for the many talented and committed people who make their living in these industries. Thousands of different businesses have been affected. Some a great deal, some not much but all have been affected in some way. The Federal Government has moved swiftly to provide income support, passing unprecedented legislation to enable a flow of cash through the community to support those people who have, through no fault of their own, lost their income and their jobs. This legislation has benefited from bipartisan political action in the Federal Parliament, and the Australian Labor Party Opposition's contribution to this terrible mess visited upon us must be acknowledged as positive and in the National interest.
So, we shoulder our burdens and get on with what life we can. But, and it is a significant but………… recent specific small actions have let loose a worm of doubt which has begun to wriggle its' way into our thoughts.
We have some examples of zealous police action in a couple of the Southern States which gives this worm some traction. It is reported that a funeral service in Victoria was visited by Police who counted the numbers of people at the service…the report has substance. It is also reported that General Duty Police Officers searched an old lady's shopping in a Melbourne Shopping Centre to determine if she was purchasing essential items…this report also has substance.

Does the legislation make it clear just where and when these gatherings can occur? If I live in outback Western Queensland on a cattle station and I want to have all our ringers and other staff around a campfire for a beer, is this illegal? If it is not illegal, then what is unlawful about a few people on a rooftop?
LIBERTY – TOLERANCE – DIGNITY.
This acceptance is not universal, nor is it timeless.
We, as a community, are asking our Police to perform duties that are unprecedented in Australia's history; duties that impinge directly on the three words that I used at the beginning of this article.
Conducting a headcount in a funeral parlour during a funeral service offends the liberty, tolerance and dignity of those citizens at the funeral and it opens up a gap between those citizens and the Police Officers conducting that activity. I emphasise that I do not suggest that the Police acted outside of the law or outside of their authority. I think it is also difficult for Police to determine what is essential shopping and what is not – without clear definitions – which are not apparent. But I don't think it is the place for a General Duty Police Officer to have to determine what is an essential shopping item. These acts place the Police under challenging positions and offend the liberty, tolerance and dignity of the old lady in question. Therefore it is incumbent upon the legislators to ensure that the laws they enact in this challenging time are unambiguous in intent and have absolute clarity of definition.
And, of course, that idea exposes the cracks in the Constitutional solidarity of what we are trying to achieve, during the time of this pandemic – which is, a universal standard of legislation applying to all stakeholders. The sovereignty of the States ensures that universal standards of legislation are challenging to achieve; simply because each State has its own idea of what that legislation should be. We know that recently Queensland Police interrupted a party/gathering on a rooftop on the Gold Coast – and, again, I emphasise that the Police were acting lawfully; there is however a great deal of unease developing over this kind of action. Men and women whom I have known for many years and have occupied senior positions in the Australian military and Australian business have indicated that, in their opinion, lines are being crossed that don't need to be crossed. Of course, judgement is easy from an armchair or a desk; these are serious matters, however, and we should not
Australians, unlike citizens of the USA, have an inherent trust of their Government, obviously with some healthy scepticism. We accept, as a necessary reality for maintaining public health, the need for laws that are intrusive at this time.
As always, our Police are asked to do challenging work; they depend upon community co-operation and acceptance for their work to be successful. The Police, as well as the community, need some explicit legislation to protect the community and the Police…it is simply not good enough to impose measures of control over activities, which in ordinary times would be quite legal, without some specific timelines in place which make it clear that these control measures are temporary and will be removed expeditiously when the public health threats are removed.
It would be naïve, indeed bloody foolish, for any Government to assume that Australians will just continue to accept these freedom curtailing impositions on their lives without some kind of end game in place. In closing, I remind you all, Governments govern, Police enforce legislation, Courts dispense justice with the freely given consent of all Australians.
This consent is dependent upon continuing respect, by all our citizens, for the institutions mentioned above. Remove or dilute that respect and consent begins to be withdrawn.
The withdrawal of community consent and the consequences of that are actions which invite serious consideration. All of us, the living and the yet to be born must hope that that situation never occurs. By: Staff Writer…Harvey Fewings.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the first steps allowing Queensland children to return to school. The Premier said a sensible, gradual return is only possible because of Queensland’s success in slowing the spread of COVID-19. “Compare what has happened in this state to what has happened in other parts of the world and Queensland can be very proud,” the Premier said. “It’s only because of these good results we are able to once again lead the progress on the road to recovery.” The steps to full resumption of school are: • May 11: Kindy, Prep, Years 1, 11 and 12 return to school • May 15: Assess state-wide response to easing of restrictions • May 25: Proposed re-opening to remaining students in remaining grades “These are the children who are at the most important junctures of schooling – the beginning and the end of their educational journey,” the Premier said. The stages to full school resumption are consistent with Queensland’s measured approach to confronting COVID-19 and balancing family needs with protecting lives during the global pandemic. Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said Queensland’s early response to confronting the pandemic was paying dividends now. “You only have to look at what we were dealing with prior to the school holidays with what we have now to appreciate why Queensland is in the strong position it is,” Dr Young said. Education Minister Grace Grace said the government’s plan has been endorsed by the independent and Catholic school sector as well as principals and teachers alike. “Most of all, we have listened to Queensland parents who have done such an incredible job for their children supporting them through home learning,” the Minister said. “I think we all appreciate our teachers and school staff like never before. “And their health and safety remains paramount. “When students begin to return to school, our schools remain safe and hygienic environments for the teachers and staff who will be in the workplace.” Social distancing measures to protect adults at schools will include: • Staff and students who are unwell must not attend school • All adults must maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres • Adults must not gather in groups in and around school grounds, car parks, school gates and outside classrooms • Parents should use stop, drop and go options rather than walking children into school grounds • Strict personal hygiene protocols, including the cleaning of high touch surfaces such as desks and door handles, will remain in place. The Premier said no-one is forgetting we are still in the midst of a global pandemic. “Thankfully Queensland has done better than most and that’s something we can all be proud of,” she said.

Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, social distancing, the need to maintain good hand cleanliness to kerb the spread of the disease and the shortage of sanitising products in normal shops and super-markets, a local business has stepped up to fill the gap and supply the much-needed hand and spray-surface sanitisers to the local community. “Household Compounds and Refills” owners, said that they couldn’t just sit back and watch peoples’ frustration over empty sanitiser product shelves, whilst they had the ability and equipment to make the products and supply them to our community. Their new sanitiser is called “Die Corona” as a humorous play on the song title “My
Sharona”. Late March, in response to the spread of Covid19, the federal government passed legislation allowing businesses, which don’t normally produce sanitiser products, to manufacture these essential products, so long as they comply with the World Health Organisations’ published recipes. Steve Gregory from Household Compounds and Refills said ”it was encouraging that some quite varied stores, on and around Bribie, were happy to make these necessary products available to our community, but it was also disappointing that some stores preferred to wait for orders of imported products or stock no sanitisers at all, rather than support a local business attempting to keep our community safe. He also said that they had done everything possible to keep their prices as low as possible, whilst enduring “price gouging” from suppliers of hand sanitiser ingredients, as well as bottle suppliers. The price of these items has quadrupled in the last few weeks, due to a world-wide shortage of bottles, caps, sprays, pump-lids etc. One of the other issues confronted by this local business, is that they are simply a small producer and the product is “hand-made”, as opposed to large factories, that pour thousands of litres of ingredients into their machines and thousands of bottles come out the other end, but at least this local producer can supply product, when these large companies can’t.

It’s quite difficult to compete with cheap imported products when a small bottle, filled with air, costs $1.50, when a few weeks ago it was worth thirty cents. Having said that, the fact that many stores don’t have any hand sanitiser on their shelves, when a local company can supply almost as much as they want, seems a little strange, but quite a few media outlets have published stories about new producers of sanitisers, not putting enough ethanol in their products to kill the viruses. The World Health Organisation say that an alcohol content of 70% or more will kill 99.9% of germs and viruses on contact. “Die Corona” Hand and Surface Sanitisers are produced with 75% Ethyl Alcohol. There are three aromas, Plain, Eucalyptus and Lemon-lime, available on 100ml spray bottles, 250ml and 350ml refill bottles to put in your own spray and pump bottles. The new federal government legislation opened the doors for new manufacturers to distribute their Covid19-Busting sanitisers to some quite un-expected types of outlets, as well as some conventional stores like the IGA supermarket at Sandstone Point. As of Friday 1st of May: NRL go ahead / Flat curve / Recreation rule test The path has been cleared for the NRL season to resume, as the continued flattening of the COVID-19 curve in Queensland - with no new cases overnight and five more recoveries - sets up an important weekend test of new recreation rules. There are now 79 active cases, 948 recovered and six deaths for a total of 1033. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk applauded Queenslanders for their social distancing. "You are doing us all proud, and of course the weekend is crucial. I hope that everyone acts responsibly, and they enjoy the lifting of some restrictions,” Ms Palaszczuk said. From tomorrow, as well as essential movement which is already allowed, some recreation within 50 kilometres is permitted for households (or individuals plus one other person) with social distancing. The Premier today also cleared the way for the NRL season to resume on May 28th, dependent on Chief Health Officer advice that the league’s plan is workable, and the NRL’s assurance that players won’t break restrictions. “It must not put at risk our excellent work containing the spread of COVID-19,” she said.

Bribie Respite and Support Services response to COVID-19 By Joanne Allison-Schouw, Services Manager
Thank you to our clients, parents, carers, volunteers and staff for your support through this difficult time. Our clients, carers, parents and volunteers are of the greatest importance to the team at Bribie Respite and Services. Our team is doinag everything possible to support every one of our clients, carers and parents through this difficult time. Due to the Government regulations implemented to manage COVID-19, we have changed our service model from an onsite day respite and learning centre to providing one-on-one flexible in-home support: for our CHSP (Commonweath Home Support Programme) and NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) clients. These services align individual staff with a specific group of no more than two clients. This style of support is designed to reduce the potential risk of infection to clients, carers, parents and staff. All our staff have completed Department of Health recommended COVID 19 training and are practicing social distancing at all times and social isolation practises when not providing support services. All staff are monitoring their temperatures and the general wellbeing of each other each day. • Our team is vigilant with the practice of social distancing within our office spaces and discouraging visitors to our facility. • We have closed Bribie Island Community Hall activities until April 30th 2020 with this date to be reviewed.
• Our team is making regular contact with each of our clients, parents and carers to chat, check on their well-being, explain our processes and answer any questions. As a team we are continuing to provide ongoing support to our clients, parents and carers whilst complying with the ever changing government regulations. We are all here to support our local community, you do not need to be a current client, parent or carer to contact us. We are here to help all older Australians, Young People with Disability and their families living in our Bribie Island and Surrounding community at all times but especially now. If you are struggling to cope with the current COVID 19 issues of grocery shortages, social distancing and social isolation rules and need someone to chat to, do not hesitate to call us.
Do you have a family member with a disability who could benefit from doing something different outside the family? Our in home and one-on-one support enables people with a disability to take a break from their normal routine and enjoy a variety of enriching experiences.

Senior Gentle Exercises Circuit Time Before You Start ! Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started! The exercises below can be done as a circuit combining exercises to rest one area of your body while exercising another. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.
SHOULDER & LEGS
Use a stable chair and water bottles or small hand weights Stand in front of the chair with a weight/bottle in each hand and your thumbs touching. Keeping your thumbs touching lift your hands towards your chin while sticking your elbows out from your body Lower weights down to starting position while keeping your thumbs touching. Repeat 10 times Sit and rest your shoulders and raise one leg at a time extending your lower leg and pointing your toes Repeat 10 times each leg Repeat shoulder exercise again when leg exercise is finished – repeat both exercises 3 times if possible.
FRONT LIFT, SHIN STRENGTHENER, PLIÉ SQUATS
Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Rest a cushion or ball on your legs and lift to shoulder height slowly then return to just above your legs – do not let it rest on your legs Repeat 10 times Rest your arms, keeping your heels on the ground lift your toes toward your body slowly. Lower toes back towards floor slowly – repeat 15 times Stand up from chair and using the back of the chair or a kitchen bench for support stand with your feet as wide as you comfortably can, make sure you are stable on your feet. Squat down as low as you comfortably can without raising your toes or heels from the ground Repeat slowly, only do as many slow squats as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Sit and repeat all exercises 3 times if possible.
FLAMINGOS, BALANCE AND TOES
Stand with one hand resting lightly on top of a stable chair or the kitchen bench to help with your balance. Flamingo - Stand firmly on one leg and slowly lift your other foot behind you only to the height of your calf – slowly return to the ground and swap legs - Repeat 10 times each leg Arm/Leg raises - Stand firmly on one leg and raise the other leg out to the front while lifting the opposite arm as high as you comfortably can – slowly bring back to start and swap sides – Repeat 10 times each leg/arm Toeing The Line – slide each foot slowly to the front and place heel against your other foots toes. Try not to step – slide, keeping in as straight a line as possible. Continue for 10 slides each foot Repeat all three exercises 3 times if possible.
CLOCK REACH AND SIDE LEG RAISES
Stand behind a stable chair or beside a kitchen bench Clock Reach - Use the chair for balance with one hand and lift one foot off the floor. Standing on one leg swing your arm backwards and forwards while keeping your body still 15 times Swap leg and arms and repeat 15 times Side Leg Raise - Balance with both hands on back of chair and lift one leg out to the side slowly. Make sure your body stays completely still and doesn’t “counterbalance” your leg. Repeat the lift 15 times and swap legs. Rest

Each day brings another heartache, another closure and much of the grief is landing on the second line – the phone and email of the Bribie Island Chamber of Commerce (BICC)

I urged businesses to reach out, to seek the most accurate information available from reliable sources and to encourage customers and clients in any way possible to adhere to the social distancing regulations. No doubt everyone has heard about the jobkeeper payment, but enrolment is vital if you qualify.
There has been a steep increase in calls from the business sector and the community trying to navigate rapidly changing COVID-19 information, our Chamber continues to point them in the right direction and pass on updated “real” information.
Firstly, your business downturn must be >30%, calculated against last year. It is especially relevant for sole traders, partnerships, and trusts. At this point I am not considering those businesses with employees.

Ensure the entity has an eligible business participant. This cannot be an employee. The participant must be actively engaged in the business @ 1 March 2020, aged 16+ and be an Australian resident.

What COVID-19 Means for Australian Real Estate By Olivier Björksäter-Bleylock
For some asset classes like short stay accommodation and hotels, the impact of COVID-19 has been dramatic and immediate. For other types of property such as residential and commercial, the impact might be more difficult to identify and might perhaps stretch on for years. As we start to sit back and take stock, one thing that is for sure, the impact of COVID-19 on our lives and property is obvious and inevitable. While in regular times, however, there isn’t ‘one property market’ we anticipate that this will also be the case in the current landscape. This begs the question, how might COVID-19 impact different sectors of property in Australia? As part of a survey by Ripehouse Advisory, 146 property professionals, including Antonia Mercorella, CEO – Real Estate Institute of Queensland, responded to a series of questions about COVID-19’s impact on the sector. “To help paint this picture, we turned to our extensive network of Australia’s most trusted property professionals,” says Ripehouse Advisory CEO Jacob Field. “Identified as key academics, leaders of Australia’s industry bodies and the individual custodians of the various professions as related to property. The opinions and statements in this document provide a frank assessment of a drastically changed property landscape.”
The common theme from the report is that the real estate industry could survive in and after the pandemic. Some of the highlights include:

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni today published the Residential Tenancies Practice Guide, following the passing of the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act in Parliament this week, which allows government to enact emergency COVID-19 regulations. “Queenslanders are no strangers to working together when times get tough, whether it's joining the Care Army, donating blood to support our hospitals, or working out a fair rental agreement until income support comes through. “Most property owners and tenants are already coming to their own agreements about how they can work through this period, making sure that nobody loses the roof over their head. Mr de Brenni said the Practice Guide would help property owners and their tenants in their discussions to negotiate a way through the next six months. “For those that need it, we’ve provided the detail to help Queenslanders understand their rights, assist in discussions about their individual circumstances, be they lessor or lessee, and assist in coming together in collaboration to new agreements where necessary. “We’ve worked with Tenants Queensland and the Real Estate Institute of Queensland on the development of the guide, who agree that this is a useful tool for tenants and owners alike. Minister de Brenni said that the Palaszczuk Government’s new regulations struck a fair balance for tenants, owners and property managers. “These are a temporary set of measures to ensure tenants and owners are protected during this pandemic. “Tenants who are suffering or who have suffered excessive hardship because of COVID-19 who cannot meet their rent
commitments cannot be evicted or listed in a tenancy database because of that suffering. Mr de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Government had established a special COVID-19 Housing Security Subcommittee. “Independent parties, including Tenants Queensland, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, the Queensland Council of Social Service, Q Shelter, along with the Residential Tenancies Authority, will supervise, observe and report to government regularly on the implementation and impacts of the measures." The Residential Tenancies Practice Guide provides detail on: • Threshold criteria to qualify for the application of the COVID-19 rental response, that includes a 25 per cent reduction in income, or where rent exceeds 30 per cent of the tenant's income. • The evidence that tenants can be asked to provide the same proof of finances to property managers just as they would when starting a tenancy. • Access for the sale of the property, virtual rental inspections and access for essential repairs and maintenance. • The 75 per cent income loss and less than $5,000 in savings threshold before a tenant is eligible for a 7-day cap on break lease fees if they end a fixed term lease early. • The extension on the term of a fixed term tenancy agreement during the COVID-19 period to September 30, 2020 unless agreed otherwise by the owner and tenant, or there is an appropriate ground to end the tenancy. • Conciliation with the Residential Tenancies Authority, including the renegotiation of lease agreements where parties are COVID-19 effected, which could cover new rent payments and deferrals if this is agreed to. On Lives the ANZAC Spirit By Amelia Strazdins
Every year, on the 25th of April, Australians gather across the nation to pay their respects to those who served on behalf of our country. However, this year those traditions looked vastly different to our normal ones; people standing in their driveways rather than attending dawn services. Despite the global pandemic, Australians rallied together in a show of unity. At six o’clock, keeping with social distancing, we joined together through lighting candles and listening to the live stream recorded by the RSL. Through our actions, we recognise the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers in Gallipoli and those who continue to protect and serve our country. It is mateship and comradery that defined Australian soldiers in 1915, and it is those attributes that are continuously displayed as we show support towards our veterans and soldiers. Whilst ceremonies were small, their importance was in no way diminished. Those with instruments performed the last post, and some expressed their respect with displays of poppies. Regardless of these ‘untraditional’ ceremonies, Australians displayed their support and admiration for those who helped shape the country we are fortunate enough to call home. These changing times have helped us recognise the importance of freedom, a value that our soldiers laid their lives down for not only on the coast of Gallipoli but throughout history.
Our actions, dedicating the time to pay our respects, meant that we not only acknowledged our soldiers, but also medics and nurses. Their fearless dedication and contribution is the reason many survived the horrors written in our history. The 25th of April was Australia and New Zealand’s thank you to those who protect our lives, freedoms and rights. The collective, ongoing efforts of our army, navy and air-force deserve our recognition and respect. In years to come, ANZAC Day 2020 will be remembered as the day the nation came together to remember its heroes. Where, despite the state of the world, people lined their driveways, standing together in pride and recognised the ANZAC spirit. We stood 1.5 metres apart and proudly sung our anthem. Whilst we did not have our usual marches or dawn services,

we stood together across the nation- a sign of solidarity. Bribie Island was not able to hold its many services this year, however our remembrance has taken the form of a time capsule. The capsule is set to be opened in approximately 20 years and will contain pictures, speeches, letters or personal photos about ANZAC Day 2020- submitted by the local community. This communitybased action is Bribie Island’s way of remembering our veterans and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. To all of those who have served or who are currently serving, we thank you for your devotion to your country. Today, we stood up for you to pay our upmost respects and acknowledge the great sacrifices you have made for our country.

ANZAC DAY AT TOORBUL
Richard Duxfield (Fire Chief) & Barry Evans Community Display, Lester Robertson & Ron Prior (Commander Rtd) Anzac Day in Toorbul 2020 turned out to be a very special day. Apart, we came together, in many wonderful ways. As usual there was the ceremony at our Memorial, at the Rural Fire Brigade Headquarters, presided over by Barry Evans, and attended by Richard Duxfield our local fire chief. Many of the community stood at their driveway at 6 am to participate in “LightuptheDawn”, and so many had small displays of poppies, rosemary, photos and candles to show our respect and reverence for those who served, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and those who were left behind. The crafty people of Toorbul contributed hundreds of poppies – knitted, crocheted, fabric and paper – to make a large display which was part of the Fire Brigade Area devoted to our ceremony. It is a beautiful reminder of all we need to think about for Anzac Day.

He went on to become a talented Amateur Fisherman winning countless titles including South Queensland Light Gear, Queensland Light Gear and the Australian Estuary Championship to name a few. His impressive accomplishments were recognised in the Prestigious Book "Notable Queenslanders" 1975 edition. A volume is published only every 50 years. As a young man he introduced his fiancé Yvonne to fishing and Bribie Island. She soon realised that if she wanted to be part of Ian's life, she would need to embrace both. Luckily, she did and Ian and Vonnie enjoyed 60 wonderful years of marriage. They retired to Bribie over 20 years ago.

Ian first came to Bribie Island as a young boy with a local Bongaree Fishing club, sleeping under the veranda as per the pecking order of the day dictated. And so, began Ian's lifelong passion of fishing and Bribie Island.
Ian's other passion was his family. He leaves behind 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. While Vonnie and the family are heartbroken they are grateful and honoured to have had him in their lives. Vonnie would like to thank all their friends for the flowers, cakes, cards and phone calls of support. He was very much loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman said that during the month of May, helping our small business community recover and bounce back stronger after the pandemic is more important than ever. “We need to support our small businesses,” Ms Fentiman said.
Julie Parsons and Charles Hardy (Woorim locals), were married on the beach at Airforces Park, Bongaree With all the doom and gloom we wanted to mention our local businesses and providers that ensured our sunset wedding took place.
On Saturday 21st March, Julie Parsons and Charles Hardy (Woorim locals), were married on the beach at Airforces Park, Bongaree. It is probably the last wedding here for a while. This wedding had been planned for a year, with wedding guests and family due in from UK,NZ, France and from most states in Australia.
Due to the current virus situation with things changing daily, about half of the guests made it to the wedding. Immediate family and bridesmaids, grandchildren etc were missing, but circumstances needed last minute changes and cancellations. Our family will still visit when things are safe, we may even have a follow up wedding next year. Julie and Charlie really want to thank all local suppliers who ensured this day happened, even until the last moment, things could have been cancelled. Louise, Alan and team at Serenity Waterways Restaurant did a terrific job of setting up the wedding and reception party with fantastic food and drinks. Sarah Thorpe assisted with the set up and staging of the event. Alain Chardon managed
the wedding photos, Ethan Hong looked after videography. Rubi and Hollie at That Hair did a lovely job even though half of our ladies couldn’t get here. Kathy Dodd our lovely celebrant was patient. Matt (Mr Entertainment) travelled some distance to entertain us. Wayne Brown our neighbor donated a car ride for the groom in a 1934 Ford Hotrod. Daphne Exleby contributed a yummy cake. Kes Bah offered to edit a last-minute wedding video. Sue Russell managed bridal makeup. Maxine and friends from First National managed accommodation bookings and cancellations for many guests. Bongaree Caravan Park staff also assisted with bookings and cancellations. Most of our local politicians were behind ensuring this took place and local businesses were supported too. We hope we thanked you all.

Storm water goes from your roof, yard or ground. Storm water lines take water from around your house in most cases to the street.
You should do a annual check on your storm water pipes to make sure they are clear to the street. You can do this by getting your hose and hosing your roof and after a while you should see water flowing out in your gutter. If you don’t the you may have a blockage. In a newer house you may find your roof water goes into a water tank. If this is the case you would need to put your hose into the over flow of the tank and see that the water flows to the street. Alternatively you may wish to in a reasonably heavy down poor of rain safely go out side and see that the pipes in the street are flowing at a good pace. Here are a few tips to help maintain your Storm Water lines Clear any grass or weeds that are growing at the street that may impede the flow of water. Do not drive on or park on your foot path a significant amount of our repairs are from

Well we all know the last thing you want at home is raw sewage flowing in your house or around your yard. We have great proven sewage systems in our State that prevent your house from flooding in the event your mains block up. If the sewage system is installed to code the likelihood of in house flooding is miner. You would all have seen the steel or plastic grate that’s maybe outside your kitchen, laundry or bathroom Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) The ORG is designed to disconnect the main sewer line from your house. In the event there is a blockage in the main sewer this grate is lower than the floor level in the house preventing the internal house from flooding. These ORG’s can not be above the floor hight of the house if it is your house will flood internally in the event of a main

New Look Council Takes Declaration of Office Moreton Bay Regional Council’s new look team was sworn in at Strathpine Chambers on Wednesday 22nd of April, but the 12 councillors couldn’t meet as a group due to social distancing requirements. They took the Declaration of Office in front of CEO Greg Chemello, on a rotation spaced 15 minutes apart.
The new Council which assumed office today is: • Mayor: Peter Flannery • Division 1: Brooke Savige • Division 2: Mark Booth • Division 3: Adam Hain • Division 4: Jodie Shipway • Division 5: Sandra Ruck • Division 6: Karl Winchester • Division 7: Denise Sims • Division 8: Mick Gillam • Division 9: Cath Tonks • Division 10: Matt Constance • Division 11: Darren Grimwade • Division 12: Tony Latter “This is an important day for our region and I congratulate the councillors on being elected to lead our community at a time when leadership is needed most,” Mayor Flannery said. “The need for unity and collaboration has never been more important, and I borrowed the words of our Prime Minister Scott Morrison in telling the
councillors to leave political ideology at the door. “Having met with all our councillors to discuss their priorities and ideas for our region, I’m pleased that they are collectively focussed on the immediate need for financial support and economic recovery, as our region fights to come back from coronavirus. “I’ve told the councillors that as local leaders, they must also take on the role of ‘guardians’ for our community’s wellbeing. “I’m very pleased to have six returning councillors bringing their experience back to the chamber, and six new councillors bringing fresh ideas with them. “I’d particularly like to welcome our three new female Councillors - Jodie Shipway (Div 4), Sandra Ruck (Div 5) and Cath Tonks (Div 9) - increasing female representation in our team of 12 up to five alongside Brooke Savige (Div 1) and Denise Sims (Div 7). “I also want to thank the community for putting their faith in me to lead through this uncertain time. “When we started this campaign we didn’t know we’d be hit with the global pandemic that is COVID-19. So locals have certainly made the right choice in electing an experienced councillor and a safe set of hands. That’s critically important at an uncertain time like this. “I promise locals that my door and the door of every councillor you have elected with always be open to people who have their hearts in this community and have ideas on how we can get through this challenging time together.” Mayor Flannery also took the time to thank outgoing councillors for their service. A statutory post-election meeting will be held on Wednesday 29 April, at which time Council will appointment a Deputy Mayor and set the council meeting schedule for the remainder of the year.

Cranky Lizard Speaks
We ll...What t he He ll c an I do ?? For various reasons, all of which are important, Cranky Lizard has fielded numerous enquiries from people across the rural and semi-rural regions of this Nation; seeking information about what they can do personally, to remove ourselves from the economic jaws of the Nine Dragons that dwell to our North. The reason for this is not that they think Cranky Lizard is an omnipotent guru with answers for everything, but they know they can expect an honest response without any frills or puffery.
So…what is Cranky Lizard’s honest response.
You are a consumer in the Australian market place, and power resides in you because of that fact. It is a power probably recognized but misunderstood in its potency.

The consumer power that resides in you can be an expression of that anger. Before you throw any item into your shopping trolley, in the future, have a good look where it is made.
If it is made in Australia, and it suits you, buy it! Cranky Lizard suggests that you actively seek out objects, goods and services that are made or grown in Australia.
That is how we get our economic wheels spinning again…

Each time you enter the market place; a supermarket, a clothing store or a hardware store, you have the opportunity to exercise that power.
For any number of reasons, initially, some of them quite sound, this country, Australia, allowed itself to be folded into the arms of the dragon. The driving force behind this occurrence was that we needed foreign investment in this Nation; we still do. And we take from wherever it comes…with some supervision by the FIRB – The Foreign Investment Review Board. We occupy a vast continent, a landmass as enormous as the United States, with only 25 million people and a large percentage of that land is uninhabitable and unproductive at present. The foreign investment, along with our substantial export income from agriculture and mining, assisted us in dealing with our National debt. What with the various market place surges in the global economy – we were able to cruise along, riding out the bumps and convincing ourselves that ‘ everything will be OK ‘.
Cranky Lizard, has, on previous occasions, drawn attention to the fact that our National fuel reserves were ridiculously vulnerable, but most people just yawned! This was just another example of national complacency – a sovereign nation with a landmass as big as the USA and a fuel reserve that consists mainly of fuel tankers on the ocean. This situation reflected accurately the ‘ globalist ‘ mindset that had overtaken our Nation.
We drifted along.
COVID-19 brutally punctured that bubble, leaving us exposed and vulnerable; our supply chains for food and essential consumables were clearly broken and we hit our bums on the floor of reality pretty fast.
And we know because it is now pretty much accepted as a reality, that we shall not be the same Nation as we were before this disease attacked us. There is growing global anger at
You may think that what you do does not make a difference, and, on your own, it probably does not. But, if large numbers of consumers start purchasing only Australian items, then the market place will reflect that. In economic terms – demand always precedes supply.
If the demand for Australian made and grown products becomes strong and certain, then that is what will happen.
We also know that we shall pay more for Australian products, simply because our wage structure is based upon a reasonable standard of living, not just mere existence.
Cranky Lizard suggests that a fundamental shift of attitudes is occurring in Australia, and we are all a part of that! Or we should be! Discussions held with local leaders, politicians and business people indicate a certain willingness to lead this attitudinal change – for example – supermarkets could dedicate at least two isles of floor space to products made or grown entirely in Australia.
Cranky Lizard reckons these two isles if they existed, would be very, very busy… Hardware chains and clothing chains could do the same and Cranky Lizard predicts that they would become very, very busy as well.
In this country, we grow some of the best cotton in the world. Why not process it in this country? For years Cranky Lizard has been purchasing clothing from Goondiwindi Cotton…no better clothing than good quality cotton to deal with hot, steamy Queensland summers. Beats the hell out of sticky synthetics!
Many of our necessary
manufacturing skills have been lost; but not irrevocably, and it is in these sectors of the economy that we should focus our energy. It is inconceivable that we allowed ourselves to have such dependence, in our economy, on service industries. These industries are essential to our daily lives, food supermarkets, retail chains, hardware stores, fast food outlets, the hospitality industry in general, all of these fundamental services provide employment for millions of Australians, but, when they are affected, as they have been in this global pandemic, then millions of Australians are suddenly and shockingly out of work.
A strong manufacturing sector allows us to absorb these shocks on a broader base throughout our community : and a strong manufacturing sector in Australia grows from increased and certain demand for Australian made and grown products. Apart from the afore mentioned cotton, Australia grows some of the best agricultural products in the world. Fine merino wool, beef cattle, dairy products, wine, a huge variety of grains and vegetables plus sugar and associated by-products. Close to 70 % of this production is exported, in raw form or semi-processed form, to global markets where it is value-added and sold back to us and to other global markets.
We depend upon our export income ; we need the foreign currency, but we have become dependant to the point of foolishness upon this export income – it seems to Cranky Lizard that we can still export but instead of raw materials we can/should export finished goods and products. Many voices can, and will, be raised arguing against these ideas, branding them idealistic and unrealistic – Cranky Lizard has no illusions about how difficult it will be to breathe life back into our manufacturing sector, but if we have the political will we shall find a way. And.
There is one certainty in all of this – a pandemic, in one form or another, will be baaaack! Because that is the way globe functions these days, ease of international travel makes it so!
Next time we shall be better prepared and better economically equipped to deal with the circumstances – and, there will still be some people who will have sheds full of toilet paper leftover from this pandemic!

State waives $33.8M in land rent for farmers, tourism and clubs
More than 6000 farmers, businesses, tourism operators, and community and sports clubs, won’t have to pay state land rent for six months under a series of measures to protect Queensland businesses and jobs.
Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said he had obtained the approval of his Excellency the Governor Paul de Jersey to waive more than $33.8 million in State land rent for 1 April to 30 September to help support business during the emergency. “Business across the state are doing it tough, and not having to pay land rent is one way we can help them and keep Queenslanders in jobs,” he said.
“With the shutdown of travel across the world, our tourism sector particularly has been hit hard.
“There’s more than 90 tourism lessees across the state who hopefully can breathe a little easier now with savings on average of more than $30,000 each.”
Farmers on pastoral lessees will save on average around $3300 and some local recreation clubs will save upwards of $4500 over the six months. Lessees don’t have to apply and those who have already paid their rent for 1 April to 30 June 2020 will receive a refund or if requested, a credit.
In situations where lessees have entered into sublease arrangements with another commercial business – the lessee is expected to pass on the appropriate amount of land rent savings to the sublessees.
Land rent relief applies to Land Act lessees, licensees or permit to occupy holders who conduct a business on state land. It comes on top of $2.5 billion in measures already announced by the Palaszczuk Government to support Queensland businesses and jobs. This includes: • payroll tax refunds and deferrals • relief for businesses renting government premises • a worker displacement program to help unemployed people get jobs in sectors facing shortages,” he said. • a $500 electricity bill rebate for Queensland sole traders and small and medium sized businesses • liquor licensing fee waivers for businesses that have had to close • rebates for marina and jetty fees • industry support package to assist large businesses ensuring they will be able to scale up when economic activity improves.

COV ID restrictions ease
Following encouraging signs Queensland is flattening the COVID-19 curve, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced stay at home restrictions has eased. On 11.59pm Friday, May 1, Queenslanders are now able to leave their homes for recreation and the distance they can travel is now extended.
For example, Queenslanders can now enjoy some relief from stay-at-home rules and: • Go for a drive;
• Ride a motorbike, jetski or boat for pleasure; • Have a picnic;
• Visit a national park; and
• Shop for non-essential items
But there are three conditions that apply linked to the above:
• Social distancing and hygiene must be maintained • You have to stay within 50km of home and • Outings are limited to members of the same household or an individual and one friend
All other rules including gatherings and limits on visitors remain in place during this time.
The Premier said numbers of new infections will be watched closely and the measures reviewed after two weeks. “The first sign of a spike we will not hesitate to clamp back,” the Premier said.
“This is a test-run to see what effect easing restrictions has on the containment of COVID-19.
“I encourage all Queenslanders to back this first step so that we can keep the virus away and help everyone start to get their lives back.” Health Minister Steven Miles said Queensland had earned a reward for its hard work. “We have done the right thing,” the Minister said. “We have to keep doing it.”
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young supported the new measures. “Before you couldn’t leave home unless it was for essential reasons like getting groceries or exercising or going to work and you had to stay in your suburb where possible,” Dr Young said.
“Now we are saying you can have more flexibility but remember we are still having to stop the spread of COVID-19.” State Disaster Co-ordinator Steve Gollschewski said police will assist people to understand the new rules but will still enforce flagrant breaches. “Police will be understanding but this isn’t an invitation for people to undo everyone’s hard work,” he said.
The Premier said she hoped easing restrictions would mean some older Queenslanders could finally leave their homes.

I was fortunate to have been introduced to beautiful Bribie Island in the 60’s. As a pre-teen during this decade, a trip to Bribie was so exciting, but still quite a big day trip from Brisbane (unlike now as we travel to Brisbane to work every day). I remember paying the toll to cross the bridge in our Ford Falcon Station Wagon.
Our family were occasional day visitors to Bribie when the bridge opened in 1963. Then our parents discovered the magic of Bribie in the late 60’s. Our caravan was pretty much permanently at Woorim Caravan Park & our weekends & holidays during the early 70’s were spent there. We formed lifelong friends, one of whom became my husband. Park life was great fun, with organised activities during holidays including indoor sports in the rec hall, pool activities & visits from Santa & Easter Bunny. In the park, we would hand feed the possums that would drop down onto our

In the mid 70’s, my parents bought land at Woorim & built their ‘beach house’. It became the hub for many of my park friends. We would also get many ‘native’ visitors regularly coming into our yard. The emus in particular, were so majestic & would parade across the yards unperturbed by our presence. The emus & kangaroos were also regularly seen strolling around the Woorim Golf Course. Unfortunately, some of the wildlife that was prolific when we were growing up, is not so evident now.
We need to be more aware of getting the balance right between the requirement for development, bringing in the tourist $’s to keep our local businesses going & protecting our environment, flora & fauna.

At the Island and Surrounds News Newspaper we love sharing news about the community with the community. We do this through our printed newspaper, our Facebook page, website and the conversations that we have with the community and our local businesses. For the last 12-18 months we have discussed internally bringing video and breaking news into the way that we operate.
Our first video-based story was a piece on the strawberry farm at Ningi when the needles were being found in the strawberry punnets. This was a great interview by Damien Brown. We knew at this time this was the way to go but as it happens deadlines come and go and as a small team our focus was the printed newspaper.
Technology has come along in this short period of time and coupled with what is happening in the world and locally in recent times with COVID-19 and the ripple effect from that we decided that now was the time to extend what we offer the community and our local businesses. How could we do that?
After careful consideration and discussion with our Marketing Manager, Matt Owen, we have somewhat settled on our additional platform. A podcast show. In audio form that you can listen to on Spotify or on our website and also in video form that you can see on our Facebook page, website and YouTube channel. At this stage the format will be a combination of face to face interviews, telephone interviews and human interest segments such as technology, gardening and so forth. We also plan to speak with our Political leaders, community groups and local businesses.
We will experiment in the first month to see what form the community prefers. Our very first interview with Pastor Ray Airosa is now available to listen and watch. Glorious Autumn
Well I absolutely love the temperatures that we are having right now in autumn as we slide towards winter, I mean autumn actually feels like autumn finally, with a little hint of winter in the as well. With all the uncertainty from the repercussions of the virus epidemic and our forced locked down of late, I really count my blessings being able to walk around the Islands beaches and foreshore, smelling the salty air and feeling the cool breezes while gazing out to sea with a back drop of white sandy beaches on a blue sky day. It really feels like a slice of heaven amongst all the chaos going on in the world. For me it feels kind of surreal, with an urge to get back to a more simpler life, one where you have more time to spend with friends and family and sharing good home cooked meals together and appreciating more of what life has to offer, rather being consumed and obsessed with material gains alone, which can distract us from what is truly important in our lives. After setting up some vegetable garden beds for some wonderful clients lately, I thought I better set up a larger raised veggie garden bed at home myself, in my spare time of course. I enjoyed every minute of it, from design to soil building, adding rich compost ready for planting. Purchasing seed has become difficult lately, although tomato seedlings are readily available and now is the best time to plant them. Growing vegetables through summer can be a real challenge especially tomatoes up here in the subtropics due to their moisture requirements and their susceptibility to fungal diseases and fruit fly problems but now the cool change is in the air, most pests will slow down and hopefully there will be less pest pressure of plagues of moths and grubs and flies that we have to deal with in the home garden. Due to an extended dry season last year and when finally the rains arrived, it caused a mass exodus of butterflies and insect activity invading every nook and cranny in our plants, fruit trees, vegetable and lawns this year causing defoliation, fruit drop in citrus and lawn decimation throughout the whole of South- East Queensland and if that was not enough, trying to keep our gardens and lawns hydrated with our hydrophobic sandy soils on Bribie Island during the drought was a supreme challenge indeed. The Beautiful thing I notice during every plague arrival of insect pest pressure, soon after the beneficial predatory insects tend to migrate also to feed on the excess of plump pests, such as predatory lady beetles, wasps and dragonflies to only name a few, and one little daily tactic I managed to fit in to my schedule was to hose the foliage of my prized plants and watch all the moths and hoppers come flying out, once in the morning and once in the evening. I remember last month that I had so many dragonflies hovering around my yard, I certainly hoped they would be feeding away on all these moths and flies. Then confirmation came one morning when spraying the foliage of my citrus trees with my hose, this huge dragonfly was doing acrobatic flying manoeuvres front, left and centre catching and eating the moths in midflight, it was great to see how nature creates its own balance eventually. Which is why I use less chemical synthetic insecticides and try to promote sustainability and bio control options where ever possible. I would rather hose off, mealy bug, aphids and moths and prune all distorted foliage and spray Pyrethrum to control ants that farm the sap sucking insects and rotate with horticultural oils and soap sprays to deter the pests as a first initial control option. Sometimes you just have to bag your fruit, cover your veggies with nets when these

Gaura hail from the plains of North America and a few cultivars have been available for a few years now in nurseries in Australia. This particular cultivar of Gaura- ‘Lillipop TM Soda Pop’, is a white flowering variety from the- Proven Winner’s collection. They have three Gaura- in this collection: G. ‘Lillipop Blush’, G. ‘Lillipop Pink’ (PVR) = Plant Variety Rights, and of course the white Gaura ‘Lillipop TM Soda Pop’, these were bred from Gaura lindheimeri, which is native to the areas from Louisiana to Texas and Gaura coccinea, which is native to the areas of South Dakota to Mexico. The breeding between these two species was done several years ago by Edward Bunker, in Redland Bay Qld. Gaura, a popular flowering perennial that looks beautiful when in flower and as their common name may suggest - the butterfly bush, relates to the flowers tending to dance in the breeze, resembling hovering butterflies as the flowers are produced on long thin stems high above the plant. These Gaura seem to me a more compact version of the G. lindheimeri, growing to 40 cm tall and 30 cm wide, but like all Gaura, when they look a little tired, you can cut them right back to promote more flowers and fresh growth. Gaura are sun lovers and are quite hardy once established. They generally start flowering in spring right through to autumn and look good in pots, tubs or in that Australian cottage garden setting. Trouble free plants indeed! pest invasions come, as the whole purpose of growing your own is to ensure a homegrown bountiful harvest that is free from traces of chemicals. When I treat my lawns, I rotate many organic substances as much as possible. My neighbours will attest down wind some days I am sure, as there are no secrets when the wind blows!
Citrus Care
This year has been incredibly challenging to keep an aesthetically pleasing, vigorously growing and prolifically fruiting citrus tree healthy and productive but there are some pests that will always plague the fresh juicy flush of new foliage growth on citrus in South East Qld. The biggest culprit is “Citrus leafminer” Phyllocnistis citrella. This little diabolical moth comes out at night and lays its egg into the mid vein underneath of the new delicate citrus leaf before it gets a chance to harden and fully form. The result is deformed new growth with shiny trails where the grub has mined inside the leaf before hatching. Oil and soap sprays are recommended but control is difficult in large trees. Traditionally white oil (Petroleum oil or Pest oil) is diluted and applied when the
fresh new foliage of individual leaves form and to control and deter the moths at timing intervals just before or after flowering, a follow up spray again after fruit has formed but due care is needed using white oil in hot weather. I have used a rotational spray program using home-made white oil and rotate with eco-oil, but sometimes the pests will reappear soon after as they are defiant indeed. disrupt the breeding cycle, but the fruit is the main concern, so a gentle prune may assist, and frequent monitoring is essential. Another diabolical night time visitor that destroys the near - mature fruit of citrus, is the “Fruit Piercing Moth” Eudocima fullonia. This moth has been out in plague proportions this season and I have been consulted to assist and diagnose why the fruit from some of my client’s orchard trees have fallen and rotten all of a sudden. This moth has a long-barbed proboscis up to 25mm long which they jab through the thick skin of the citrus rind and feed on the sweet juice inside the fruit. Sometimes there are two to three moths feeding per large fruit, and these can be easily seen at night with a torch when they are out feeding on your fruits, you will see their red eyes glowing under your flashlight. Once the fruits have

They attack a variety of fruit and vegetables depending what is on the menu at your property, but citrus, mangoes, star fruits and capsicum are their favourite. As far as control goes this is extremely difficult as the moths are quite large around 5 cm long with a 10cm wingspan, so apart from using a hose and continuously blasting moths in your tree all night, the best thing to do is prepare for when the next invasion comes; by covering your fruit trees with netting. The other most common and frustrating symptom in citrus, particularly oranges; is when the citrus fruits crack open before harvest, this usually happens when your trees receive too much moisture at one time or fertiliser for that matter, which is taken up by the plant causing the cells to swell to exploding point, which becomes visually evident when the rind splits open, revealing the overly juicy segments for all to see, this can happen to potted dwarf citrus trees which may be overfed or over watered also, but not to be confused with general fruit drop, as some trees produce too many fruits for the size of the tree and will naturally drop their excess fruits in times of drought or stress to survive. Partial re-opening of some National Parks The Palaszczuk Government today announced that some popular areas in National Parks in Queensland will re-open next Saturday, following a relaxation in guidelines from the Chief Health Officer.
Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP says he will fight for $242,000 in Federal funding to get lights installed at the oval at the Sandstone Point Community and Sport Complex. Lighting up the oval at the Sandstone Point complex will allow more local sporting and community organisations to utilise the oval afterhours.
Mr Young has called on the community of Longman to rally behind the fight for funding for the Sandstone Point Community and Sport Complex, with an e-petition to be made available on Mr Young’s Facebook page.
Mr Young said organisations like the Bribie District Little Athletics, who already utilise the oval, would benefit from the installation of lights at the oval.
“It’s important to ensure that people who use the oval after hours are given a safe and secure location to hold organisation activities and sessions,” Mr Young said. “By installing the lights at the oval, we will be able provide oval users with that comfort and any family members.”
Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said public health and safety is the most important thing and with the easing of restrictions, people will have some greater freedom to visit parks and forests to exercise and look after their mental health. “Over the long weekend, Queenslanders will be able to have a picnic and go for a walk in most National Parks as long as they observe the Chief Health Officer’s guidelines. “The fact that we can re-open some areas is great news and a reward for Queenslanders doing the right thing during this pandemic,” Ms Enoch said. The announcement includes the reopening of summit tracks at Mount Coolum, the Glasshouse Mountains and Mt Bartle Frere. “We will also re-open some popular dayuse areas including Danbulla National Park surrounding Lake Tinaroo and Laguna Lookout at Noosa National Park as well as Queen Mary Falls at Main Range National Park,” Ms Enoch said.
Their argument to close the beach and national park access has some merit, and before some of you yell at me, please hear me out. Driving on dunes and soft sand threatens wildlife habitat, places migratory nesting turtles at extreme risk and breaks down the natural vegetation. These are very real and very big concerns for those of us who value our unique and wonderous environment and want to protect it.
I have held an annual 4WD permit for many years and enjoy nothing more than getting in my 4WD with the kids and taking off for a day up the beach. We ensure we time our journey right, so we are not travelling on the high tide (which destabilises the dune system and habitat) and we don't drive at night. We take our rubbish home with us, we abide by the speed limit and we report others who we see doing the wrong thing. There is no place for idiots on our beach!
So how best to manage the interests of those who want it closed and those who,

Premier clears path for kick off ! Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has cleared the way for the NRL’s much anticipated 2020 season to resume. In a telephone hook up this afternoon, the Premier told NRL Chairman Peter V’Landys and the CEOs of the Broncos, Cowboys and Titans that they could resume training for a season reopener on May 28.

The Premier said the decision gives clubs permission to travel across the Queensland border to play because they are working and because they are in quarantine. Importantly, it also allows Queensland players to remain in Queensland with their families. “First round games will be played in Queensland and of course I put in a bid for a local grand final and we all look forward to hosting the State of Origin.”
“I said I was as keen as anyone else to see the NRL return and I meant it,” the Premier said. “The only condition was that it did not put our excellent work containing the spread of COVID-19 at risk and the Chief Health Officer advises that the NRL plan is workable.” Following examples of players breaking restrictions this week, the Premier demanded further assurances about enforcing home-quarantine measures that are a cornerstone of the

Nerill took her boat down the Caboolture River, to the mouth, the week after Easter and says she “stopped counting after 16 bream”. She kept three of the biggest of them - 30cm, 30cm and 29cm, and also scored a 40cm tailor. Another report came in at the same time, “heaps of under-sized bream and nothing else”, so maybe Nerill got in first. Tailor have been showing up already, south of the island, especially out from Red Beach and Godwin Beach – 50, 60, 70cm specimens among them. Between Beachmere and Godwin Beach, Jude has been having a busy time, fishing from the shore. Sand flathead, bream and winter whiting in abundance, using usually prawns for bait.
From Sandstone Point, Henry and Toby said they would have the line in for only 20 seconds, before hooking yet another winter whiting. Michael was in the same spot too, a couple of weeks ago. He says

Cook’s Rocks are also a good spot for flathead – one 88cm beauty lived to see another day, but Cody kept his 51cm flathead, which he caught on fresh herring.

Rod said there were plenty of tuna out at Smith’s Rock last week; they were all a bit skittish, but he brought one home with him, stopping at Cook’s Rocks on the way in, to get a good load of whiting, too.

Further out, tuna are showing up in big numbers – both yellowfin and mackerel tuna – off the north of Moreton Island, Smith’s Rock and elsewhere. Dillon used a metal jig to hook up a good mackerel tuna in the Spitfire Channel. With the beginning of the wintry westerlies, it’s the time to target the tuna out there.

Fishing from the shore has also been allowed, as good exercise, as well as to feed the family. Certainly, from a boat or from land, April has been a very rewarding month for fishing!

The COVID-19 restrictions meant that to go out on a boat, it had to be privately owned and you needed to be fishing for your family. We’ve probably never seen the boat ramp near us so busy! It was encouraging to see that almost all of the boaters were adhering to the “two people or a family” rule – a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy some outdoors social distancing.
Over the past weekend, (which is after this report is written), temperatures were predicted to drop dramatically, so the bumper bream catches may soon be over, but it’s been a great season lately. Justin didn’t have to go far to get a catch of bream – sitting off the Passage-side boat ramp at Kalamakuta Drive. He found squid was working best for him, but Mick was in pretty much the same area over Easter and yabbies were the go. He caught 30 odd fish over 26cm, most of them over 30cm, and kept a couple of good ones for the Easter table.

April has been an interesting month, for Australia in general, and for fishing locally.
Weatherwise, April has been fantastic. Daily wind maximums have been about 15 knots, average temperature has been 27o and water temperatures have remained at 26o. Just 11 days have seen rain, with most of it overnight; only 42mm in total. So, the seas have been calm, the waters clear and the fish have been settled and keen to take whatever bait is being offered.

How do you know pelicans are optimists? If they were pessimists, we’d call them pelicants!
Ok, not the greatest joke but optimism is something we are going to need by the truckload as we begin to recover from COVID-19. We need to start thinking beyond the present, to consider what rebuilding our communities might look like, and the so many opportunities that will present themselves for shaping a better and more resilient Pumicestone. We have a newly elected local Government and with this comes the hope of renewed vigour to share the love across the whole region - not just over Redcliffe way! It’s time for our business streets to be beautified, it’s time for the focus to be on our business community (sadly some may not rebound), and there is no better time to refocus and rebuild than now. This is my message to the new MBRC, and with this comes my sincere congratulations to those who were elected to represent at the grassroots level. At the same time as looking towards the future, we must never lose sight of what we have endured in a matter of a few short weeks. Governments have gone heavily into debt as they wage the mightiest battle against the pandemic. They’ve propped up businesses, given stimulus to the unemployed and found ways for many to stay connected (financially, emotionally) with their jobs. We’ve seen the mighty power of mum and dad investors who brought the State Government’s proposed rental aid laws under fire and rightly so. I have many friends who work hard to become small-time investors, only to be financially crucified by the State Government’s tunnel vision. Many in our electorate are self-funded retirees who have worked hard, paid their tax dues and decided to take the plunge into property investment as a source of steady income stream. Most investors are the little people and no doubt the ramifications of this will be felt when people get to judge e

Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine the day would come when I’d stand at the entrance to the Bribie bridge telling day-trippers to ‘stay away!’. That message went viral and I’m told was the talk in lunch rooms (perhaps not so complimentary) across the CBD. Nonetheless, the message got out and by large, people understood that Bribie Island’s population is one of Queensland’s most vulnerable due to the demographic. I’d like to think we’ll open our arms to welcome visitors back very soon. Amidst all this hoopla, our attention quickly shifted from a virus pandemic to a care pandemic when our true hearts and souls reached out and wrapped around the vulnerable in our community. In so many ways this pandemic has brought us together, it’s been inspiring and a great privilege to witness, and to be part of. To our Pumicestone residents caught up in the quarantine saga in WA, welcome home, it’s great to have you back safely from what can only be described as an exhausting ordeal. I hope that by the next edition of my back page we are on the turn towards our recovery. It will be a different world on the other side of the virus, there will be many challenges but I firmly believe that we, Australians, will be at the heart of recovery, not Government. We will continue to embrace new ways to do things and even better ways to live our lives. I have dedicated the bottom half of my back page this month to making it easier for you to find home delivery. Please keep supporting our businesses as every one that is able to stay open is a business making and sustaining jobs and supporting our local economy.
