Hi Readers, Well here it is issue 49, Welcome! This is a very special issue. In this crazy time with COVID-19, our advertisers had no choice but to save as much of their out goings as possible and advertising was one of them. The LOCAL News understood and decided to be very pro active so our small businesses can still survive. Now more than ever our local owned and operated businesses need your support to stay alive. Simone Wilson MP and Terry Young MP have both sponsored and paid for a page each (Pages 6 & 7), so the businesses in their electorate can still advertise. These two pages have so many businesses that are still open for businesses adhering to the COVID-19 procedures the Government has asked them to do. Letter to the editor, re letter by Paul MC enlister with regards to the canal levies I want to bring to the attention that the canals are not part of the property of the canal owners and that the canals can be and are being used by all people that do have boats. I am now talking about the Banksia Beach Canals . Possible damage.!!! can as well be created by any boat owner. Mr Paul Mc Enlister might as well say that all people living along the Pumicestone Passage are responsible to pay for the maintenance off the Passage!!!!To go a step further Mr Paul Mc Enlister might argue that any person living along the dunes in Woorim who have the pleasure of a sea view are the ones that are responsible to keep the dunes in a good shape. In your March Local Island and surrounds letters to Editor, I note that one Bongaree resident suggests Mayoral candidate Chris Thompson has lost a few thousand votes by promising to abolish the canal levy. It shows that this resident is ignorant of the facts and Chris Thompson is right on the money. Here are the facts • Bribie Gardens waterway residents, under the Caboolture Shire Council, did not have a levy imposed for 30 years because the Council considered that the higher rates paid by waterfront residents more than compensated for any maintenance on the waterway. • When the new Moreton Bay Regional Council was formed the Mayor ignored the current arrangements and set up a levy to assign the full cost of maintenance of the waterway to waterfront residents. • He also ignored the fact that this waterway is not a deepwater canal but a public lake and reserve, which had been handed over by the developer to the State Government to be owned and operated by the Council. • The waterway also serves as the major drainage and flood mitigation facility for Bongaree not just for waterfront residents but the entire suburb. • Sand dredged from the entrance to Pumicestone passage paid for by this levy is gifted to Council to use to replenish the public beach on the foreshore. This has saved ratepayers nearly a million dollars over recent years. • We don’t think it is fair that waterfront residents should be called on to fund the entire cost of replacing the lock and weir, which the Council owns, in 40 years’ time. I reckon Chris Thompson may well increase his votes by several thousand for recognising that this retrospective and unfair levy is entirely unjustified. Regards Farley Dear Editor Regarding the article in the Bribie Weekly on Thursday 2nd of April about closing the Bribie Island Bridge off from the mainland, I want to express my disappointment in Diane Oxenford president of Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BEIPA). Why would we want to close the Island completely down? Does she not understand the meaning of growth and prosperity on the ISLAND? Neighbours and friends at Bongaree have taken social distancing seriously at Cocktail hour. There was no stopping these friends from still having a drink with each other. Peter Butt, Geraldine Bennett, Andy and Rosie Christie all went to the end of their driveways with cocktails/wine and phones in hand to enjoy their regular cocktail time on Saturday at 5pm. They sat and chatted to each through their mobile phones. I must say it was so great to see that while they are doing the social distancing, they have not given up on the finer things in life and still enjoyed their chats on the phone and cheered each other from a distance.

HOME MEAT DELIVERY IS NOW AVAILABLE!

The HOME DELIVERY mobile number is 0480 259 673 At Avondale Meats we take our responsibility to the community as an essential service very seriously. So in response to the Government requirements for social distancing we are bringing forward the launch of our home delivery service. Whilst waiting for our online shop to be finished, Avondale Meats will be offering a telephone order home delivery service starting Tuesday 24th March. Given the current situation with supplies please bear with us and understand that our product stock can vary extensively day by day depending on what the wholesalers can supply to us.

How it will work: 1. There is a dedicated mobile number to call and place the order. The HOME DELIVERY mobile number is 0480 259 673 (Please DO NOT call the shop for home delivery orders) 2. Orders placed by Noon (Monday to Friday) will be delivered after 12:30pm same day. Orders placed after Noon (Monday to Thursday) will be delivered next day. At this stage there will be no weekend deliveries available. As deliveries pick up we will allocate dedicated days to different suburbs but at this time we are being as flexible as we can to meet your needs. 3. FREE DELIVERY FOR APRIL 4. Orders will be processed and you will be contacted with the amount to pay over the phone via EFTPOS. 5. If you are home we will leave the order at your front door, if you won’t be home please leave an esky at your front door for delivery of your order and you will receive a text confirming your order has been delivered. We will do our best to fill your order but please take into account that some products are still scarce or unavailable and maybe for a few weeks to come. Delivery suburbs All Bribie Island suburbs, Sandstone Point, Ningi, Godwin Beach, Beachmere, Toorbul, Meldale & Donnybrook. At this stage we are flexible with order days and delivery days – as the service picks up we may have to introduce dedicated delivery days to specific suburbs.

Federal member for Longman and aged care minister visits Morayfield aged care facility Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP and Federal Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians Richard Colbeck visited Rockpool Residential Aged Care in Morayfield on Thursday (12th March) to tour the facility and meet with its elderly residents and members of staff.

Following the tour, Mr Young and Minister Colbeck met with age care providers from across Longman, with the Minister addressing questions and concerns about aged care in the electorate.

Mr Young said he was delighted to have the opportunity to tour the aged care facility with the Minister.

I am also calling on the State Government to extend immediate closures to Ocean Beach and day use areas. Closing National Parks isn't going far enough and people need to know it's not ok to come to Bribie Island for anything other than essential services at this time. Federal member for Longman Terry Young MP calls on Australians to do their part to protect Bribie Island residents Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP has urged the Queensland Government to take the safety of Bribie Island’s aged residents seriously and ensure the necessary protocols are in place to protect the Island’s locals from the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Mr Young said he had been contacted by numerous Bribie Island residents who were concerned about visitors and holiday-makers travelling to the island and beaches remaining open for recreational activities. “Bribie Island is well-known for being a beautiful destination to go for a holiday or a beach trip, however what people need to realise is that Bribie Island also has the highest percentage of aged Australians in Queensland,” Mr Young said. “Many senior Australians have chosen to put their feet up and spend their retirement in Bribie Island. We owe it to every single resident who call this island home to ensure that the proper precautions are put in place to make sure they are protected and safe. “The Prime Minister has made it clear that you can only leave your home for essential reasons such as doing your grocery shopping, going to medical appointments, exercising and going to work. These measures, as well as strong distancing measures, have been put in place for a reason, so that we can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “On the basis of health advice, it is recommended that people over the age of 70 stay-at-home and limit contact with others as much as possible. “We know that social distancing works – and every Australian has their own part to play.” Mr Young said he was reinforcing State Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP’s message that visitors ‘please stay away’ and to only venture over the bridge and go to Bribie Island for essential services. “I am asking those looking at coming to Bribie Island for a day trip or a holiday to please save your trip for the future, once this is all over. We need to limit the island’s visitors to only those visiting the island for essential purposes, like going to and from work and medical appointments. “We want to protect Bribie Island’s older residents and we can’t do it if other Australians aren’t playing their part. So please stay home unless it’s for essential reasons. “Even though the many at risk community on Bribie may not be your mum, your dad, your nan or your pop, they are someone else’s and they don’t want them getting this virus. I implore people to be considerate of others. “Remember, stay strong, stay safe and stay positive, we will get through this.”

The government is churning out support almost faster than the initial toilet paper hoarders. There is a new support payment for employers to assist them in keeping their staff and this is called the JOBKEEPER PAYMENT.

Employees who receive a notification from their employers that they are receiving this jobkeeper payment must notify their primary employer if more than 1 job. If they have applied for or are currently receiving an income support payment from the government,

• are full time, part time or long-term casuals *have a turnover that will be reduced by more than 30% relative to last year Not for Profit Entities that meet the turnover tests are eligible to apply for Jobkeeper Payments Employer Obligation

*register an intention to supply on the ATO website and assess that they have or will have >30% turnover decline

*provide info to the ATO on eligible employees engaged at 1 March 2020 and those currently employed. The ATO will be using Single Touch Payroll (STP) data to cross reference.

*ensure that each employee receives a minimum of $1500 pre-tax per fortnight. If the employee has been receiving less than this, the employer must top up to equal $1500 pretax per fortnight. For those earning greater than $1500 per fortnight to date the employer can top up the balance. * Notify all eligible employees that they are receiving the Jobkeeper Payment *Provide info to the ATO on a monthly basis * Super is to be paid on current employee wages, but it is up to the employer if they wish to pay extra because of the jobkeeper payment. Sole Traders

Businesses without employees, such as the self-employed, can register their interest in applying for the jobkeeper Payment from 1 March 2020. These businesses will need to provide an ABN, nominate an individual to receive the payment, provide their TFN, and provide a declaration on recent business activity. A monthly update to the ATO is required to declare their continued eligibility. Payments will be made monthly to the individuals bank account. Calls grow for big business to pay on time Queensland’s Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman is calling on big business to do the right thing and pay their small business suppliers on time.

The Minister has added her voice to that of Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell in the campaign for big business to step up. “We know our thousands of small businesses are doing it tough right now and we need to do everything we can to help them stay open and keep people in jobs,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Our small businesses don’t have the financial resources of the large corporations and they need to be paid as early as possible to give them the best chance of surviving COVID-19. “I am disappointed by reports of big businesses using the coronavirus crisis as an excuse to delay payments.

“Our small business sector is struggling and businesses need cash flow to stay afloat. “More large corporations should follow the lead of companies such as Telstra, BHP, Rio Tinto and Woolworths and introduce faster payments to help the small suppliers.” “BHP is reducing payment terms from 30 days to seven days for more than 1,100 small businesses across the country. “And they are making immediate payments of outstanding invoices which is a big help to small suppliers, especially right now.” With the current COVID-19 crisis accelerating, the Queensland Government will be fast-tracking payment times to support our local businesses as a matter of urgency.

“Because we know cashflow is key to businesses and jobs,” she said.

“The Director General of Department of Premier and Cabinet has said all suppliers should be paid as soon as service or goods have been provided.

“I would encourage companies to do the same so we can support our local economy and businesses to get through this crisis together.” The Minister also encouraged small businesses to register for faster payments from the State Government.

Public warned to avoid scams by Unlicensed Persons due to COVID-19 Property owners are being warned not to fall into the trap of using unlicensed persons to conduct plumbing work during the global COVID-19 crisis.

Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting work is essential to ensuring the health and safety of our community, and this is particularly important given the health pandemic that we are currently facing. Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ), the peak industry body representing the plumbing industry, is raising awareness of opportunistic, unlicensed scammers who are completing plumbing work illegally. Plumbing, drainage and gas trades are administered by a strict licensing and legislative regime, which also ensure tradespeople hold the relative insurances that are required of them. This is to ensure the safety and protection of the community through the provision of clean drinking water, sanitation, and gas.

MPAQ’s Executive Director, Penny Cornah, said “We understand that COVID-19 has left many people in Queensland in a financially vulnerable position, and we want to try to help protect Queenslanders from those who seek to take advantage at this time.”

“When trying to keep renovation or building costs to the absolute minimum, DIY or handyman work tends to look like a better option over hiring a licensed plumber or gasfitter, but by going down this route you are putting your family’s health at risk, as well as facing possible legal and financial implications,” she said. Homeowners should ask their plumber and/or gasfitter to provide their licence prior to engaging in any plumbing, drainage or gasfitting work.

“If they cannot produce their licence or evidence of their licence number, do not engage them for any work.” Ms Cornah said.

“The easiest way to ensure your plumbing work is completed safely and complies with the industry standard is to find a licensed plumber using the Find a Master Plumber database.”

How the NDIS is benefitting our community By Joanne Allison-Schouw, Services Manager

As a community-based organisation, Bribie Respite has been providing support services to the Bribie community for over 20 years.

In response to the NDIS, at Bribie Respite we now provide a range of disability and learning support services catering to individual needs.

In recent years, with the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, we’ve extended our service offering and are seeing first hand how it is benefitting members of our community.

As well as providing a varied activity program at our centre five days a week, we offer one-on-one and in home support services. Our personalised approach means we help clients realise goals and choose what they want to do.

The NDIS aims to puts people with a disability at the centre of the system for the first time. It allows them to determine their own future and receive funding which matches their needs and aspirations.

They may wish to access mainstream community activities, seek help with cooking or cleaning, or learn new skills so they can do jobs themselves and extend their independence.

People with a disability want to be part of the economic and social life of their community and have a right to determine their own futures, like everyone else. We see life changing situations. Many of our clients are learning to lead a more independent life and developing valuable life skills and lessons in household management and personal care. They are also building their confidence while developing new friendships and interests. In our learning centre, we also see NDIS clients significantly developing their literacy and numeracy skills.

At Bribie Respite, we believe that life with a disability should not stop someone from being active and participating in a variety of enjoyable activities.

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. LNP demands fee relief for real estate agents

Shadow Attorney-General David Janetzki said real estate agents were the second-largest small business employer in Queensland, with 32,000 agents supporting around 50,000 jobs. “When businesses are struggling to survive, these charges are unfair and unreasonable and they must be suspended for six months at least,” Mr Janetzki said.

The LNP is calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to waive all licence and registration renewal fees for real estate agents and businesses for six months following a crash in property sales.

“The LNP is calling for a review in six months’ time on whether the fee waiver should be extended.”

Open homes and auctions are forbidden under coronavirus social distancing requirements and real estate agents have seen their earnings collapse. Despite the sector-wide slump, real estate agents are still being made to apply for either one or three-year licence renewals, costing $740.30 and $2054.70 respectively.

Registration renewal fees are an additional $171.60 (one-year) or $416.90 (three-years). Business licences range from $419.70 (one-year) to $1092.70 (three-years).

21% of Australian children, aged 11 – 18 years old are victims of cyber bullying each year (Beyond Blue 2019). Cyber bullying or online bullying is a form of harassment using socialmedia platforms or mobile devices. It has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers, as the popularity of technology has expanded and advanced. Cyberbullying can occur in group chats or in a one-onone situation. This bullying can take the form of photo-shopped images with cruel memes, hateful, degrading comments passed between people in a larger group or targeted ridicule made in a public forum. It is often said that being a bully is a sign of insecurity. On-line, teenagers are sprouting hurtful things that they would never dare to say in person; they feel protected by the anonymity of cyberspace.

However, the effects are real. When someone is being cyber -bullied, it can cause them to be socially excluded, have low self-esteem, and lose relationships with their friends and family. When someone is being cyber-bullied, they may not be comfortable talking to others or talking about what has been going on with them, internalising their hurt

When someone is being cyber-bullied, his or her education can suffer. They cannot escape the bully. Technology ensures that we have access to people 24/7 so it can seem like there is no escape. As a result, a young person risks losing focus in class, not completing tasks and their grades dropping. In extreme cases, cyberbullying can lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression or PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). PTSD can occur

once the bullying is resolved but it can prevent social interaction and be an ongoing issue.

However, young people, you are not alone! If you are being bullied, there are ways that you can protect yourself. Cyber bullying may feel like it is unstoppable, but there is always something you can do.

These strategies can help you to take back control and stop the bullying:

1. Block the bully so that they are unable to message you. 2. Tell a trusted adult about the bullying and keep telling people until you find someone who will act. 3. Do not open or read the messages from the cyber-bully.

4. Tell a teacher, Year Level Coordinator or school administrator if the bullying is school related.

5. Record the cyber bullying - take pictures or screen record the messages. 6. Do not agree to meet the bully face to face.

For the gamers out there, or people who want to get into gaming without spending thousands of dollars on a gaming PC, consoles are what comes to mind. Players tend to be one of either team Xbox, team PS or team Nintendo. Let us explore what is out there:

All consoles offer online gameplay but what makes the PS4 Pro and the Nintendo switch superior is that theirs is free, dissimilar to the Xbox one X which features Xbox Live Gold – enabling online gameplay ranging from $9.99 a month to $59.99 for 12 months. controllers. The runner-up would be the Xbox one X having a slimmer design than the PS4 Pro.

But, consoles aren’t going to win this debate based on their looks! There is a range of key internal aspects that all consoles should have. Firstly, let us compare the FPS that you get when using these consoles. The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro share there 60 fps, as well as the Nintendo switch ranging from 3060 depending on the game. Secondly, there is the RAM which covers both storage and memory, when referring to Storage the Xbox One X beats out the competition with one Terabyte of Storage in comparison to the PS4 Pro with 826 GBs and finally, the Nintendo Switch with a measly 32 GBs of internal storage. Thirdly and finally, they all support 4K. As you can see there are many elements that make these consoles the top of the line and it is difficult to pick one clear winner. If you are looking for the best portable competitive gaming console, let us be honest, the Nintendo Switch is your pick. Personally, after reviewing the specs, I think the XBox one X is the superior console due to the high class internal specs that make for a smoother gameplay experience. Nevertheless, all of my top 3 consoles are fantastic and I believe they will be your top picks too!

Keep in mind though, each of these companies are coming out with a new console for 2020. Xbox will showcase their Xbox Series X, PS their PS5 and finally Nintendo with the Nintendo Switch Pro. We will just have to try them all!

Cranky Lizard Speaks WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE WHEN IT IS OVER…? Pandemic April 2020. [ Cranky Lizard has referred to a number of sources for this piece… The Australian and Wikipedia being the principals. When commonsense and good manner requires it – direct quotations are noted and acknowledged.]

It will be different. Not much will be the same. Many established boundaries have shifted. National strategic thinking has changed, personal priorities have changed, employment paradigms have shattered as if they were subject to a wild earthquake and what was once accepted as the norm may now be challenged: or least it should be.

Have you noticed how the national conversation has changed – except that is for the ABC, which is running its own agenda, has a preferred position on community lock down and virtually attacks the Government on each step it takes to deal with this terrible event. Cranky Lizard wonders whether the Board of the ABC and the CEO, Ita Buttrose understand the original charter of the tax payer funded body. Perhaps they should start reading it again – because although it is not stated, Cranky Lizard reckons that there will be a square up in the future.

And so there should be – the ABC has not helped this Nation in a time of crisis – they have run their own left wing agenda contrary to sensible medical and economic advice from those men and women who are experienced and qualified to do so!

The ABC have reduced themselves, in the eyes of many Australians to an hysterical babbling rabble. And that is a shame because they had so much to give in terms of radio coverage in rural regions and in calm measured objective coverage of events. Which is what their charter requires them to do. How they have reached the situation that they have is a matter for broad community discussion ; the ABC has a legion of similar thinking supporters, but they are on the wrong side of community thinking on this – and, quite frankly, Australians deserve better from their national radio and television network. Certain members of the print media have added to the stress and anxiety, writing articles about the imminent collapse of various important institutions in our Nation : the banks, the ICU’s in hospitals, the transport network and on and on…it is called catastrophic journalism and the way in which many of them have carried on it is easy to see why there is press censorship during wartime.

Cranky Lizard predicts that our media organisations will come under some heavy public scrutiny in the future. Their role as leaders of debate and opinion will be and should be, questioned.

Cranky Lizard suggests that this event will leave a lasting impression for a generation of Australians. Demand will shift away from luxuries and glitter and focus on distribution, networks of supply. And that won’t be all that bad. Fifty years ago Australia was pretty much self-sufficient; we could feed ourselves, we could manufacture most of the household goods we needed, we refined our own fuel, we made motor vehicles and we were beholden to no country for essential supplies. That is the direction many Australians will want to go – it won’t be simple, nor will it be easy, but there will be significant pressure to do this.

And. Whether we like it or not, we shall have to face a vast, almost wartime, debt load on the Nation’s finances.

That dent will need to be paid; it cannot be left to the next two generations to carry that burden. Government expenditure will be carefully scrutinized, for example, the combined billions spent by State, Territory and Federal Governments on consultants is just wasteful when there is a large public sector to do that work – and they should do that work. That is why they are there! The annual ‘free for all ‘ and the façade of independent bodies fixing politicians, senior public servants and judges wages will be questioned, as it should be !

When it comes to who the community actually needs to be doing work it is as obvious as a dunny in the desert that café and retail staff, pilots, taxi drivers, first responders, nurses , doctors, tradies, hair dressers are the ones that do the heavy lifting. White collar workers by the tens of thousands, sitting in huge buildings plonking away on computers terminals and going to pointless meetings may begin to wonder what is the point of what they do… Cranky Lizard does ! Perhaps all this energy and intelligence can be re-directed, over time, and will take time, into a more efficient and relevant manufacturing sector. We can begin to make things again.

In rebuilding our economy, it will be as it always has been, the wealth creators will be the drivers. Mining, Farming and Manufacturing and Transport, air, land and sea, are the fundamental tenets of modern economies – all the rest just value add, which is fine but without the essential elements, there is nothing to which value can be added.

The vague, egocentric ramblings of celebrities have been shown up for they really are – of no consequence! The National conversation has drifted away from climate alarmism, gender balance and vegan activist nonsense.

Did anyone notice the hoarding of ‘ ersatz ‘ beef burgers made from cotton waste and beetroot juice? No? When the

last card was laid on the table humans wanted protein from real animals. The spangled moss concoctions in the dairy fridges remained untouched…humans wanted proper dairy products, real milk from cows not milk from almonds and other nuts and trees.

As we dwell in our houses in quarantine, we are forced to contemplate our neighbours, we find out things about them we did not know, our immediate suburban surroundings become more interesting and our local parks contain a surprising variety of birds and native animals.

Cranky Lizard suggests that we shall need to urgently assess our capacity to produce energy : windmills and mirrors just won’t cut it.

As a nation we simply cannot allow ourselves to be living on three to four weeks supply of basic oil reserves. Globalism, as it has been conducted, is over. We can't rely upon oil drifting across oceans in ships for our nation’s energy generating capacity.

Cranky Lizard points out that we have enormous reserves of uranium and that now is a particularly good time to consider the option of nuclear energy seriously. The technology has changed remarkably since the days of Chernobyl, it is cheap, it is essentially pollutionfree, and it is readily available. Logic demands that we give this option our attention.

Australia is a wealthy, lucky country surrounded by huge oceans. We are able to control our borders and it is imperative that we continue to do so in the manner in which we have.

It seems to Cranky Lizard that we shall become a calmer more considerate community than we were before this pandemic attacked us. Our National conversation had become absurd ; hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent in law courts trying to develop industries that were being challenged by green lawfare, we were attacking our own means of production of food and wealth in the name of some esoteric global aim.

A benefit of this pandemic may well be that we have been forced to re-focus our National priorities ; and that will be a matter of some benefit to all of us.

We have a government which is working for all of us. A National Cabinet which is responsible to the electorate, and, accepts that responsibility. We have a magnificent health system, and we are a vigorous, intelligent, compassionate and innovative people.

We have plenty going for us.

Coronavirus protections stepped up for m iners, com m unities Mining companies are being asked to step up their coronavirus protections for fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers, staff in mining camps and remote and regional resource communities. Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said all state, territory and national resources ministers had agreed that the resources sector was essential to maintaining a strong Australian economy. “However, public safety is our number one priority and we need everyone in the community, in business and in industry to play their part,” he said. “That’s why the Queensland Government has been discussing FIFO with resources companies for more than a week, and I’ve also been talking to the Federal Resources Minister. “Resource companies have been engaging with the Queensland and Federal Government and are alert to these issues. “We expect that all companies will continue to improve their operations and constructively engage with stakeholders, including workers and the local councils.” The Chief Health Officer has asked resources companies to follow the public health protocols issued to date so that workers and communities are safe. Extra precautions have been asked for workers in camps and those on the move, whether FIFO or drive-In, driveout (DIDO).

In camps:

• infection control in kitchens and food preparation areas. • suitable accommodation for self- quarantine

• maintaining social distancing in camps, including for recreational activities, including outdoor sport • limiting movement of workers from camps and into the broader community • no more ‘hot bedding’ to limit contact between employees

• cleaning each room thoroughly between uses, including changing and washing linen.

On transport: •

avoiding close contact during transport, including reducing the numbers of people travelling on buses and aircraft.

• thorough cleans between passenger loads getting off, and those getting on

• temperature testing at airports for passengers boarding aircraft • people with symptoms not travelling, and to immediately isolate, and seek medical advice.

• reducing FIFO and DIDO during the COVID-19 to minimise the mass movement of people. All mines in Queensland are being asked to provide a COVID plan that covers their workers.

New residential aged care facility marks new era for Wamuran

financially at this testing time. There are people who are going to suffer more financially from this virus than others. We actually have businesses like hardwares and nurseries who have seen an increase in business, as people prepare to do those jobs around the home they have been putting off, if they have to self-isolate.

Though on the other hand, we have people in hospitality, sporting clubs, retail and other industries that have had to cut back and close. These are the workers and businesses that need help and they will be helped through the Newstart allowance, plus coronavirus supplement and other government payments that are applicable to individual cases.

Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians Richard Colbeck said the Morrison Government investment of $4 million – and the provision of 80 aged care places – would ensure the new development, Beaumont Care, would offer support to the community for years to come. The Wamuran facility consists of four separate homes connected with

“The number of Australians receiving aged care is expected to almost triple by 2050 to some 3.5 million people.”

Plant of the Month Tabernaemontana corymbosa The Dwarf Pinwheel

If you are like me and have started a small veggie garden at home, it’s quite a bit of work initially and planning to get enough produce to feed one adultnever mind the whole family can seem daunting indeed. The trick- I believe, (as I keep telling myself), is to focus on the longer term, and plan for a more sustainable household in its entirety. Such as, collecting any rainfall from your roof and storing in tanks, recycling our refuse, especially our kitchen waste and turning it into compost which we can add to our poor sandy soils here on Bribie Island, with the aim to build up the organic component and boost the soil fertility needed for successful fruit and vegetable growing. The benefits are tenfold, rather than just focusing on growing vegetables alone. And I mentioned last article, the fantastic benefits of using a food dehydrator to preserve excess fruits and vegetables, and it’s interesting to watch them change into a smaller compact but tastier version of itself, as it dries and retains the same nutrients once available in the original fruit- such as the common sultana, but we can also use bananas, mangoes, strawberries, pineapple and apricots which are a favourite for most, and are easily dried for storing (if you have good self-control that is- not like someone I know).Hmm. The beauty of having our seasonal fruit and veggies in such an abundant supply, is that when they become abundantly available, they are relatively cheap to purchase, so it’s a great time to buy them in bulk for preserving, but the unfortunate thing of course, is after you have spent all season nurturing your home- grown produce and compare and take into account- your true cost of seed, seedlings, compost- if you do not make it, irrigation and fertilisers, you may be a little miffed to see that the humble tomato is available for a song at the grocer at the time of your harvest. But alas, the benefits of growing home-grown produce is that the whole family can participate in growing it- if they wish, from seed to harvest to plate,

The Tabernaemontana genus- Syn. Ervatamia, contains around 100 species of evergreen trees and shrubs belonging to the family Apocynaceae, and hail from the tropical and subtropical areas of the Pacific, including Australia, Asia, America and Africa to name a few. Tabernaemontana corymbosa ‘Dwarf Pinwheel’, is a superb example of a reliable, profuse flowering small shrub growing to 1 metre tall with fragrant white flowers shaped like a pinwheel or small propeller. Their glossy leaves still resemble a Gardenia- in appearance, except they are more elongated- ovate to lanceolate in shape. There are a few cultivars and trade names such as Tabernaemontana corymbosa ‘Sweet Love’, which grows to 2 metres tall and T. corymbosa ‘Little emerald’, a dwarf plant which also grows to 1 metre tall and wide, and of course- the well-known ‘Mock Gardenia’, Tabernaemontana divaricata, which grows to 2 metres tall, is sometimes marketed by nurseries as Ervatamia coronaria, I have become very fond of the hardy Tabernaemontana corymbosa ‘Dwarf Pinwheel’ and ‘Little Emerald’ cultivars as they have proven to be a reliable landscape planting specimens which can flower most of the year. They prefer a full sun to part shade aspect, and they grow well here on the coast on Bribie Island and surrounding districts. and the reward and satisfaction- is hard to beat. When you add the fact of our location into the equation- being a coastal community, especially for those who eat seafood; the benefits of fishing and growing your own produce is a pretty good situation to be in. The other important thing to remember is that crop rotation is required to maintain the health of plants and soils for example: growing tomato plants in the same position year-round can attract Root- knot nematodes (eel worms) that can cause stunting of new plants and seedlings which become less productive because their roots have been invaded, this is particular important if you plan saving seeds as you should save seeds from your finest and healthiest crop, this is why it’s best to rotate your tomato plants or (Solanaceae family crops), with brassicas: broccoli and cauliflower or allium family: leeks, garlic or onions, which will starve the nematodes from their favourite food source and assist to eradicate pathogens. So- plant hygiene is a must. If you have no space to grow any produce or the time and the ability, then there is another option of course is sprouting seeds in a jar. Seeds like mung beans that have germinated enmasse contain as much nutrients in that- one little sprout, as the whole mature plant at harvest- now that’s a healthy option. Stay healthy all!

you can talk to us on the phone and wave through your window if you wish, and quotes and invoices can be done in a non-contact situation and can be negotiated by phone or email- thanks to modern technology. Now, I went to buy some vegetable seeds online (as the local suppliers had been rushed on- in a panic) only to find the leading online supplier had been inundated and was forced to close shop until next spring. Wow talk about an eye opener, if one thing is for certain, a lot of people will be awake to this possibility in the future and prepare like our grandparents did after the great depression. Having routinely saved our own seeds, bottled our produce, freeze our excesses and have a contingency plan for loss of income would be the difference between feast or famine. But if we are forced to stay at home, and you have the physical ability to work outside in your garden, then at least the weather is a little cooler now, so it’s a great opportunity to refurbish those tired old gardens, mulching them or controlling weeds, adding fertilisers, treating lawn pests or grow your own home grown vegetablesif you want. It is also a great time to prepare any new garden beds for the future when seeds or seedlings become available again, so you will eventually be able to grow some veggies for the next season and enriching your soil now with compost or composted manures and covering with a feeder mulch (feeder mulch is referred to as a light airy mulch, such as sugar cane or lucerne which breaks down relatively quickly and adds micro nutrients to the soil as it breaks down). As I write this article at the end of March, the sun is shining after a couple of days of scattered showers, the lawns are hydrated and green and there is lots to do around the garden. But what we can’t do, is control what’s going on around us, especially with this Corona virus pandemic, but we can control how we react or respond to our fellow human, neighbour and our relationships with family. April 2020.Conspiracy theories race around social media like headless chooks. I am writing this in the light of the early morning sun, and its splendid presence provides an opportunity for optimism because of the eternal promise of light and warmth to come. If you took note of the nonsense on social media, you would throw yourself under a bus, or off the Bribie Island Bridge. Don’t do that because much of the material on social media, apart from the posts by Government agencies, is placed there by people who are scared and anxious; and much of what they say reflects that. As a Nation, we are being tested; we all know that. Our economy, our institutions, our first responders and our community cohesion are all being placed in a crucible of fire and subjected to searing pressure to perform in conditions that very few of us have planned for or indeed ever considered would happen. But it has happened and it will continue for some time to come. So, what can we do? We look to our leaders, National, State and Local Mayors for direction and example. Leaders are required to have three fundamental qualities – courage, integrity and humility. Without those three essential character traits, you would not be able to lead a Choko vine across a paddock. Courage is an elusive creature, and leaders must have two forms of courage: moral courage and physical courage. Moral courage is required to enable you to make decisions for the greatest good knowing that the decision may hurt some in your community, even your friends and acquaintances, but must be made so that the majority of your population will benefit from the decision. That benefit almost always implies personal safety and well being for your people. Physical courage is required to enable a leader to stand in front of a mob and explain to them, often in hostile circumstances, what decisions have been taken, why they were taken and how those decisions will benefit the general population. And make no mistake, standing in front of a hostile media pack, swamped by irrational howling as is often the case, takes physical courage. It also takes courage to stand in front of your peers and advise them of leadership decisions made which you know will affect them, their loved ones and their relationship with you. Leadership without integrity will only take you to the dark places of Goebbels, Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. Any man or woman who holds a leadership role must be able to stare into their own eyes in a mirror and know that the decisions you have taken are for the common good. You must have the honesty of purpose; you must have fire in your soul and steel in your spine. Humility will enable you to listen to the concerns of people who will be affected by your decisions. You must take into

account their expressed concerns, honestly judge them for what they are worth and either accept them or reject them. So. Having dealt quickly with qualities of leadership, the next question is – do we have leaders of that quality in our Nation? And the answer is that we do. Yes, we do! Our national leadership is doing just that – leading. The National Cabinet works as it should. Our Constitution allows for that to happen, and the Federation arrangement of the sovereign states is successful. What then remains for us to do to deal with this vile event? It is incumbent upon us, as citizens of Australia, to protect ourselves, our fellow citizens and our Nation as a whole. And we do this, in the first instance by following the instructions of our leaders. We are asked to live in quarantine for a few weeks, how hard is that? Really? We are asked to keep a certain distance from our fellow citizens, well how hard is that? We are asked not to travel overseas because of the dangers of bringing the pestilential presence back with us when we return ; and yet, and yet, since we have been asked not to travel over 16,600 Australians, our fellow citizens, have left the country for places like Thailand, Bali and the UK etc. It is obvious that the deposits they paid for their travel are more important to them than their own health and the health and well being of their fellow citizens! Many of them are now marooned at overseas destinations, and they expect us to get them home. Well, how likely is that? We are asked not to travel interstate, for obvious and commonsense reasons. But we know because they have told us themselves on live media, that this direction has been challenged by a number of our citizens as unconstitutional. Their challenge was dismissed. What we see in all of this is that we have amongst us a raft of our citizens who simply will not accept that we face a terrible threat and that strong Government leadership and direction is necessary to confront and defeat The Rider on the Pale Horse. And, you ask your self, why is this so? The answer is not obvious but it is probably found in the mix of the attitude that floats around in our population – “ I am special, I can do what I want, No one can tell me what to do. “ A good example of this attitude is the wild four-wheeldrive hoonery on Bribie Island ocean beaches. Sand dunes wrecked, turtle nests destroyed, laws flouted, native animals run down – a demonstrable lack of concern for our fellow citizens and our natural assets. Well…it is just possible that this terrible event may level out some of that thinking. We can hope! As I write this, there are several large floating Petri dishes moored off or slowly cruising our shores. They will not go away, they demand respite,

they demand to have people, probably infected with this pestilence landed on our shores. They act like self-indulgent children. Simple, decent humanitarian concern will ensure that those that need urgent medical help will get it and those that can be returned to their home nations will eventually be returned to their homes. But National leadership requires that we examine these matters thoroughly and our priority must be the safety of our Nation. The ship that has caused much distress is the Ruby Princess. The facts surrounding the disembarking of her passengers and the monitoring of her crew have yet to be clearly established. Someone knows what happened! Someone knows, and the sooner they tell the truth to the Australian public, the better. If you expect your citizens to conform to rules, then you must be scrupulously honest with them, and the Ruby Princess story has been cloaked in bureaucratic mist for too long. Pandemics, floods, bushfires, droughts are major community threats and events such as these always the very best and very worst of human actions. I have highlighted some matters here that are not pleasant to read about because I have pointed out some apparent displays of poor human behaviour. But you know, and I know, that examples of brilliant and generous actions by most of our fellow citizens completely overwhelm the poor actions. You cannot do deals with the coronavirus. It does not do lunch where you can duchess it around the table and make an “ accommodation “. It does not care how much money you have or how powerful you think you are. The only way we can defeat this little turkey is to abide by the instructions of the leaders we have elected – they are following the advice of some of the best medical epidemiologists in the world and some of the best economists available. No one knows all the answers, but Australia is doing pretty well in the global stakes – we don’t have it under control, but we have it in our sights, and we have its number. In summary, don’t listen to or read the doomsday pictures painted by sections of the media – they are wrong. The Rider of the Pale Horse sits easily in his seat right now…but we shall have him in due course. We can do more harm to ourselves by not conforming to our leaders' directions than he ever can! Fishing and essential boat use to continue

Queensland boaties can still take their boats out locally to fish or travel for essential reasons.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey clarified the rules for boaties as the evolving COVID-19 response restricted a range of activities. “If you own a boat and want to head out in the water in your local community to fish for food this weekend, you can,” Mr Bailey said.

“If you need your boat to travel locally in your community, you can still do that. “If you want to head out on your kayak or stand up paddle board for exercise, you still can. “State Government boat ramps will remain open to boaties.

“We want people to continue living their lives as normally as possible under the current circumstances, but the advice of the Chief Health Officer needs to be followed. “No one should be leaving their home unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

Mr Bailey said recent national directives limiting public gatherings to two people or less and limiting travel to essential purposes still applied. “This isn’t a special rule to let people out on the water for non-essential reasons this weekend,” Mr Bailey said. “There’s no reason for anyone to be taking the boat out unless it’s for essential travel to get to work, to and from your home, to local shops for provisions or catching fish for your family.

“Even then, there should be no more than two people, or immediate family members on board, and the social distancing rules everyone is being asked to follow still apply. “Boaties should also be mindful of hygiene when putting boats in the water at public facilities.” Mr Bailey encouraged boaties to continue monitoring the national health advice on COVID-19. “As the nation works together to stop the spread of the virus, there is new advice daily.

“Boaties should be aware of the current restrictions on boat use, and be prepared for that advice to change again, should tougher rules to limit public movements and interaction come in.”

Prawns have usually been the bait for catching bigger bream, but Ann and Paul had more luck with squid, using the falling tide to catch bream and sweetlip. Nate has been using herring, which makes sense, because there are increasing numbers of herring about, so it’s a natural choice. Fishing the IGA ledge, at Bongaree, he caught a 30cm bream, and he also caught a 35cm bream out on Cook’s Rocks.

A few people have been saying that crabs are the real good news story right now. Jason set his pots up near the Avon wreck and managed 23 keepers in one day! Richard tells us there are crabs everywhere; Nate reckons that it’s worth putting out your pots “anywhere on sand-flats”; he got 6 good bucks from Godwin Beach.

Tim, on the other hand, had 4 pots out; of the 20 crabs caught, 18 were jennies. But Tim, you know, he never has a lot of luck..

Richard says there are plenty of bream at Cook’s Rocks and Sandstone Point, as well as whiting. Staying closer to home, Shag Island and the Avon wreck, as well as Banksia Beach, have been good spots for a day of fishing – with shovelnose shark, flounder, cuttlefish and even the odd legal snapper being caught.

Fortunately, the fishing has continued to show good results. March weather was encouraging, with rain-periods every second week, which kept the fish interested in a feed. The water-temperature dropped during each of these weeks but lifted again; currently it sits about 1-2o above long-term averages. While these conditions continue, we will see a variety of summer and winter fish around the Passage and beyond. The real winter fishing may not kick in until a little later than usual this year.

The warmer water is helping to hold the bream in the Passage. Big and small bream are occupying all sections and are pretty hungry. Dion and Harold spent most of their day fishing the area between Ningi creek and the bridge, and got onto “lots of baby snapper, sweetlip and bream.” None of the bream or snapper were keepable, but an estuary cod and an impressive sweetlip made it to the dinner table. In the same area, Ann used prawns and mullet to catch three grunter bream – all of them hefty, over the turn of the tide.

So, as long as we conscientiously apply the distancing and group guidelines, we might be able to continue to get fresh air, exercise, stress-release, as well as dinner, through fishing.

Greg and his wife went a little further, heading down to Deception Bay. Between them, they were able to bring home 60 big winter whiting. Whiting love to nibble on worms, of course, but quality worms are still hard to come by. It is best to call your local bait shop, to check ahead.

Some things change and some things remain the same. The rules for boating and fishing seem set now and we’ll be allowed to fish in order to feed our family, which is pretty much what everyone aims to do.

Paula and Steve tried the outgoing drift between the South cardinal and Red Beach early in the month, and said there were “fish everywhere – whiting, mackerel, squire and even flathead – they were just all too small to bother keeping.” They did see another boat have more luck on the day, bringing in “something 1m+, maybe a cobia.” According to Richard, there are good schools of mackerel out that way, so who knows…

It is worrying to us all how quickly our communities have been turned upside down with the COVID-19 pandemic. All indications point to this situation staying with us for some time to come – we are in for a long haul. The Pumicestone Electorate Office has also felt this change. We are following the directions of the Clerk of Parliament by closing public access to the office as a means of controlling the number and risk factors of individual constituents. Those who have had interactions with my office know that we pride ourselves on the customer service we provide. Importantly, my office remains open (just in a different way) and as always we remain at your service. We are asking people to now contact me via email – pumicestone@parliament.qld.gov.au or by phone 3474 2100 and you will be responded to at the very earliest point. These types of measures highlight that it is ‘business as unusual’ and for the months that lay ahead this, sadly, has to be our new norm! To the community groups who still may be actively fundraising, if you require gift baskets to raffle online or via other safe methods please drop me an email and I will make arrangements with you for collection or drop off. Similarly, for groups requiring photocopying services , please send your request along with artwork via email and we will notify you once ready for collection or drop off. Now is the time to stay within your own community, shop within your community, stay home as much as possible, limit non-essential journeys and practice social distancing and hygiene. This is extremely important. I want to reach out to our aged and isolated residents and people living with disability. It is important that we check in and ensure they have the support and grocery essentials they need as they go about their daily life. If you know anyone in need of assistance at this time, please contact my office and we will do our level best to help. Alternatively, for people who have no other means of support can call the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349. I also want to acknowledge our local business community who face great uncertainty, adapting to new ways of working, to coping with government mandated closures, staff layoffs, and social distancing measures. Both Federal and State Governments will continue to release measures that support the small businesses sector during the pandemic and I encourage you to keep informed on latest advices being issued by visiting www.australia.gov.au and www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19. It is likely, as this paper is delivered out to you, that more measures have been implemented to keep our communities safe. I know that we, as a proud and caring community, will do our part. Anzac Day We may not be able to pay tribute in the traditional way where we come together each year, but there has been a call to all Australians to continue to honour those who served and sacrificed by standing at the end of your driveways, balconies or where ever you safely can for a minute silence at 6am on Saturday, 25th April. Let’s join this movement and unite in paying our respects to our Australian defence community, past and present. My family will be participating in this movement and I hope to see many others doing the same.
