Hot Bread at Woorim

This month’s guest in our Close Encounters Story, Michael Bain has ronic, because over the past 8 weeks I have been undertaking a number of work projects in the inner western region of Queensland which has seen me frequent numerous local bakeries. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the local bakery is often the only place open in small towns for a pie and coffee at 6am. The second reason is that pies, buns, apple turn overs and vanilla slices were part of our family culture in our home-town of Townsville where I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. We would come home from school and often there would be four cream buns topped with

Mick said, “I joined the Army in 1987 and after 25 years, decided to resign and reintegrate myself and family into the Bribie Community. I have an affinity with Bribie Island as I completed my final two years of high school at Caboolture High while living with my Grandparents in North Street, Woorim – It was the best lifestyle.”

Mick Bain and his wife Brigitte are well known for operating La Vera Gourmet Pizza and Bar and the Bongaree Bakery on Bribie Island and have recently decided to spread the love for fresh baked products with the opening of their second bakery, Woorim Hot Bread at Woorim on Bribie Island. “Our product is made by local people using fresh and local ingredients where possible. We use only the finest quality meat supplied from a local butcher. We are preservative free.” Mick said, “The first thing that I would say it that business is very tough, but we decided to open Woorim Hot Bread in late August to provide a quality bakery service to the local Woorim Community and try to build a stronger business. Brigitte and I are strong believers in supporting local community and local

The store also makes home-made cakes for any occasion or customers can choose a cake from the display at the shop entrance. Sharyn said, “We are really excited to open a bakery in Woorim and invite our locals to come an try our breads and cakes. We bake everything fresh and we welcome our community to come along try our products.” The bakery business is also privileged to have Steve Coors as their master baker. Steve is famous for creating the 2nd Best Pie in Australia and for those who wonder about what makes a good pie, it’s all about the gravy and quality beef. Steve said, “Ever since I won this prestigious prize for the Bakery, I have maintained the secret recipe which is based around the meat quality and flavor of the gravy – its’ a real winner.”

Beachmere U3A heads into term four

Beachmere U3A launched it’s Term Four Program recently with classes and workshops commencing from Tuesday, 8 October. The term will continue through to Friday, 6 December and has a host of new classes to tempt it’s students.

Chair Mary Brown said the new Program was the most diverse this year and included perennial favourites in music, language and exercise but also some exciting new subjects.

“Ukulele remains ever popular and we have three classes this term, from absolute beginner to beginner to those who can already play and just want to have some fun and a good old fashioned singalong. We also continue our guitar classes.

Dear Editor – Act of Kindness "I was standing at the taxi rank at the Bribie Shopping Centre when a young woman approached me and asked if I had phoned for a cab. When I replied that no, I was living in hope this woman offered to drive me home. Don't know if it was the white hair, mature age or bags of shopping but this thoughtful young woman put my shopping in her boot and drove me home. It transpired during the journey that the woman lived at White Patch and she was driving me to the other end of the island. My offer of a contribution toward fuel was politely declined. How wonderful it is to find that kindness, courtesy and decency lives on our beautiful island home. Thank you to this lovely young woman". Dear Editor Cranky Lizard in his column in Issue 41 painted a graphic description of the despair that the present drought is bringing to the landholders of Queensland’s west. Certainly, the current drought will ease eventually: “Rain comes, it always does”. And yes, drought has been a feature of Australia’s climate for long before European colonisation. However, the present dry conditions are superimposed upon a warmer background, with global temperatures now being on average one degree warmer than historically. This is undeniable: truthful thermometers have been available for 300 years. One degree does not sound very much, but for some finely-balanced natural systems it is a devastating change. To dismiss the present conditions as simply a normal continuation of cycles that have been in place for millions of years and to speak dismissively of “climate change advocates” is to do a grave disservice to the valiant souls out west who are clinging to hope wherever they can find it. Dear Professor Edwards, President, The Royal Society of Queensland. September 2019. Thank for involving yourself and your prestigious society in the affairs of the Local Newspaper. Cranky Lizard was not writing about climate change; the comments were about the personal effects of drought on people who live on and work the land in agricultural enterprises. For those people, climate change and its effect on their lives are axiomatic. When you mention ‘truthful thermometers ‘ Cranky Lizard assumes that the truth and thermometers are also axiomatic. Cranky Lizard also assumes that you are speaking globally when you collectively mention thermometers and three hundred years; obviously, the ‘ colonialists ‘ have not been in Australia for three hundred years so no written records exist of that time. On matters of climate change you speak as a highly regarded scientist. The vast majority of our community are not scientists and therefore form their opinions on matters of climate change based upon information available in the public forum. Problem is, this forum has become so politicised, that most opinions on this matter are now subjective rather than objective and this mitigates against reasonable discussion on climate change. And. The lack of reasonable discussion about a commonly accepted problem is indeed a grave disservice, to all who live and work on Australia’s land. Cranky Lizard assures you of the best attention at all times.

A Promise for Air-Conditioning

Liberal National Party (LNP) Leader Deb Frecklington visited Bribie Island State School on Thursday, September 12th to announce a promise for air-conditioning in every state school classroom if she wins the next state election. Bribie Island State School will be among the first schools to receive airconditioning as part of the LNP’s plan for Queensland if they win. Bribie Island Parent & Citizens Association (P&C) President Leanne White and Event Coordinator Natashia Peters were present for the announcement and extremely supportive. At current, the P&C are fund-raising themselves to get air-conditioning for the school buildings. Ms Frecklington said she decided to prioritise the school after LNP Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson said it urgently needed an air-conditioning fix. “By way of background, so years and years ago the Government brought in, it was the old Nationals Government… they brought in the air-conditioning program and then a Labour Government cut it off. And, so the line now sits around Gladstone so any school under Gladstone doesn’t automatically get air-conditioned under the Labour policy, they expect the hardworking P&Cs to do it. So, that’s why we have determined to get back to basics

and make sure that our schools are airconditioned,” Ms Frecklington said. “I can tell you that here on Bribie Island it gets bloody hot in Summer… it gets really hot in my patch around Kingaroy as well, so the Caboolture schools, for example, Bribie Island, all these schools you would find the classrooms would reach over 40°c on a Summer’s day and that’s unacceptable for the teachers and for the kids.” “The LNP knows that cool kids are smart kids and that’s why we will air-condition every single state school classroom if we win the next election. “I want the dedicated teachers and amazing students at Bribie Island State School to work in the best possible conditions.” Opened in 1924 Bribie Island State School was the first school on the island and offers an inclusive curriculum for students from prep to year 6. Ms Wilson said Bribie Island State School, which has around 660 students, is the oldest school in the Pumicestone electorate. “I don’t think it should be left to mums and dads to raise the money to aircondition classrooms,” Ms Wilson said. “I think the State Government should invest in cooler state schools and that is exactly what the LNP will do if we win the next election. “Our kids and teachers shouldn’t be left to sweat through the summer.”

TERRY YOUNG MP Federal Member for Longman

As your new Federal Member, I have enjoyed getting out there in the Longman electorate and meeting with many great organisations, sporting groups and locals, all while assessing the needs of the community. Last month, on Tuesday, 27th August, I hosted a health forum on Bribie Island with Federal Health Minister the Hon Greg Hunt MP, which saw more than 200 people register for the event. I will also be hosting a Toorbul NBN Information Session on Wednesday, 9 October 2019 at 6.30pm at the Toorbul Community Hall 158 Esplanade, Toorbul QLD 4510. Another bank closes it’s doors in the local area

Beachmere Community Bank Steering Committee member, Karen Harris, said it was very frustrating that the Margate Community Bank had made such a decision to close the Agency.

“To say the local community is disappointed is an understatement, especially at the moment with a nationwide campaign touting Bendigo Bank as the bank ‘that will look after you’ and ‘has your best interests at heart’ – unfortunately just NOT in Beachmere.”

Beachmere will lose it’s Bendigo Bank agency at the end of September. Open for around twelve months the Agency was to be the forerunner of a local Beachmere Community Bank branch.

However, when the Steering Committee recently advised that it was no longer continuing with it’s attempt to open a Community Bank Branch, the Margate Community Bank Branch which was “auspicing” the Agency, was very quick to advise that the Agency was to close. A letter send to each of the Beachmere account holders said the Bank “had been well supported by the people of Beachmere and we regret any inconvenience the closure of this service may cause”.

A true gentleman who will be forever in our hearts.

The first is Manager of Beachmere IGA, Peter West, who worked tirelessly to open the Agency and support a place for locals to do their banking.

A new Bill introduced to Parliament this month will enable the collection and publication of information from private and public health facilities and residential aged care facilities. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the Health Transparency Bill would enable elderly residents and their families to make informed decisions when choosing a service. “This is about making sure our parents, and grandparents, and loved ones are treated with respect, dignity, and appropriate levels of care. “The Palaszczuk Government is sick of dodgy contractors and greedy owners exploiting vulnerable Queenslanders for profit. “Even though the Federal Government is responsible for the sector’s regulation, this is one way we can make them more accountable. “When it is enacted, this Bill will help open up private and public facilities to similar levels of scrutiny, which will help improve the care provided to older Queenslanders,” Mr Miles said. “Queensland families want to know if their loved one gives their life savings to a company to care for them in their old age, what exactly are they paying for? Enough staff with the right skill mix to care for them? Or another Lamborgini for the CEO?” The Health Transparency Bill will create a standalone legislative framework to collect and publish information from public and private health facilities and public and private residential aged care facilities. Consumers will be able to view and compare this information on a new interactive website. Residential aged care facilities will be asked to report their average daily resident care hours quarterly. Private residential aged care facilities can choose not to report this information, but their decision to opt-out will be highlighted beside their name on the new website. The Bill also requires Queensland Health’s residential aged care facilities to have a minimum nurse skill mix of 50 per cent and for 30 per cent of the total care staff to be registered nurses. These residential aged care facilities must also provide a minimum average of 3.65 hours of nursing and personal care to residents daily.

Closing the sale – get the results YOU need!

In your personal life scenario being able to close is what gets you where you want to be in life. In other words, being an effective closer is what gets you the results you want - in any environment. I’ve worked across a very wide range of industries and one of the most typical problems I see is the failure to close the sale. Being able to close a sale is essential for all businesses. I want to stress here that I know closing is not something that comes easily or naturally to everyone. People often have an aversion to asking for what they most want (I used to suffer from this)! However, learning and perfecting your closing technique will result in higher conversions for your business and in getting the life outcomes that you want and deserve. We all want outcomes which delight us, not those which disappoint us! So what is it about closing that causes the best-laid plans and strategies to come unglued at the 11th hour? There are only two reasons. Yep, that’s right, it all comes down to one of two reasons. Nothing else. Put simply, you are either: 1. Using a closing technique which is ineffective; or 2. You are not closing You’re not alone – these are very common mistakes.

The good news is that you can remedy this situation. What is closing? Closing is simply asking for a commitment. By definition, it requires you to ask the question: “Will you buy from me?” If you do not ask the question then you have not closed. In your personal life situations, it equates to “Will you do this (for me/with me etc.)?” When can you close? You can only close when you have completed your sales process and concluded your sales pitch/presentation. In a personal life situation this equates to providing all the information and presenting all the benefits/implications to the person from whom you want a commitment. There’s not much difference between the business and the personal scenario as you can see! The Rules 1. The close comes at the end of the process. Never earlier. 2. The close must never be postponed. The sales process, if done well, will have your prospect interested and motivated. This is the time of optimal commitment: strike whilst the iron is hot!

What happens if you don’t close? If you fail to close then one of two things will happen. 1. The prospect will not buy 2. The prospect will buy elsewhere - probably from the next good closer they meet! Here’s an example; You’re enthusiastically telling a friend about a film which you want to see with them. But, you don’t actually ask (close) ‘will you come to the cinema with me?’ You’re having a great conversation. They seem to really like the sound of the film. You feel pretty confident that they’ll go with you. You plan to phone at the weekend and invite them. Meanwhile, they get asked (closed) by another friend. Their response, ‘sure, I heard that’s a great movie, I’ll come see it with you tonight’ (buys elsewhere). Can you see how you missed the opportunity of getting what you wanted? 1. Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in many functions in the body. It affects normal growth and development, involved in taste, smell and appetite regulation, synthesizes male hormones. Signs of zinc deficiency can be anxiety, OCD, ADHD, frequent infections, picky eaters, irritability, depression, poor wound healing, increased intestinal permeability, eczema, dry skin, acne, low weight, sensitivity to noise, poor vision, and decreased immunity. Life with a disability should not stop someone from being active and participating in a variety of enjoyable activities that enable them to thrive and learn more about themselves. Here at Bribie Respite, we provide a full program of semi-structured learning, social support, outdoor activities and other fun trips. Our cooking classes are popular because they help everyone understand what foods can go together to make a delicious and nutritious meal. They also teach important skills for household management. At our cooking classes, people are also involved in preparing the food and cleaning up. And we even organise for our cooks to go out shopping and buy the ingredients. Our aim is to provide people with the tools and confidence to take good care of themselves, go out and about in their community, make friends and ultimately, get more out of life. We organise regular trips to local community resources including parks, the library, the beach and further afield to the Sunshine Coast. We also organise different types of special interest groups including outdoor pursuits such as fishing and camping. These group activities offer a host of opportunities

and interesting experiences which are both fun and educational. Through these activities, people can enrich and expand their life. It’s important for everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy time away from home and experience a different environment. Overnight camping in recreational cabins offers new and exciting challenges. These trips enable people to connect with nature, strengthen their environmental awareness and develop important new skills which they may not otherwise have the chance to develop. Tougher drink driving laws locked in

Months after signalling a crack down on distracted drivers, the State Government has passed tough new drink driving laws for Queensland.

Under the changes that were passed during regional parliament in Townsville earlier this month, the alcohol interlock program, which requires sentenced drink drivers to unlock their cars by passing a breath test on a device installed in their vehicle, will be expanded to apply to mid-range drink drivers. Other changes include requiring all drink driving offenders to complete an education intervention program before they can reapply for their driver licence. With drink driving accounting for a quarter of Queensland’s road toll, Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the tougher laws would send a strong message to drivers who can’t separate driving from drinking. “Last year, 63 people died on Queensland roads because of drink drivers. The year before it was 43 people,” Mr Bailey said. “This is unacceptable.

“We know mid-range drink drivers account for more than a quarter of all drink driving offenders and have a crash risk 20 times greater than someone who hasn’t had a drink. “That’s why we’re proposing to expand the alcohol ignition interlock program to include drink drivers with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) between 0.10 and 0.149.

“Under the new laws, drink drivers will need to have an alcohol interlock in their vehicle until they can show a consistent record of clear breath tests over time." To support the performance-based interlock program, the current two years ‘sit out period’ that applies to those people who chose not to fit an interlock to a vehicle, will be increased to five years. This means a person cannot drive for five years if they choose not to participate in the interlock program.

Mr Bailey said education was also a key focus of the new legislation. “There is currently no legislative requirement for drink driving offenders to complete intervention or education programs as part of their return to driving,” Mr Bailey said. “Research indicates that education programs delivered to both first-time and repeat drink driving offenders reduces the rate of re-offending.

“The new laws will compel all first-time offenders to complete an online Brief Intervention Education Program before they can drive again.

“Repeat offenders will also have to complete a more intensive, multi-session program to help them change their behaviour. "These changes are a critical next step towards reducing road trauma caused by drink drivers and confirm our commitment to making our roads safer.” The reforms to Queensland's drink driving laws will be rolled out over the next two years.

Okay, I understand that some people think that fitness can’t possibly be fun. Unfortunately they usually have this opinion because they accidently switched channels one night and watched a sobbing, begging and sometimes even vomiting (yuk!) victim being punished by a celebrity trainer whose claim to fame is that they once helped a movie star lose 10kgs 15 years ago. These trainers bully their unfit victims into doing ridiculous things like running up a sand mountain in the sun while the trainers, who have already driven to the top, scream stupid things like “Good Job” or “Use Your Hate as Energy” at them. Eventually their victim cries or vomits or sadly does both, and the trainer then hugs the sobbing mess while explaining that this had to happen for the victim to “heal”. This is batshit crazy. Exercise should NEVER be a punishment and all these ridiculous shows are doing is making people scared of personal trainers and

exercising. These shows make them think that they have to be humiliated to become fitter and healthier which is WRONG! Yes, in case you haven’t guessed by now, these shows make me angry, if anyone ever yelled at me like those trainers yell at their victims I would walk out, actually I would yell back, actually probably both. No one should EVER be turned into a victim! Exercise comes in so many shapes, from walking to mud runs, swimming to skiing, tennis to tap dance and this is great because you can then find something that you enjoy doing to be your exercise. Exercise should be something that makes you SMILE! No one is going to keep going to an exercise class or gym if they don’t enjoy it. That’s why so many people join a gym and then stop going after a couple of months, no one notices if you turn up or checks to make sure you aren’t confused with a machine. In those couple of months you might not have even talked to another gym goer, because when

Senior Gentle Exercises Have Some Fun Before You Start

Have a stable high backed chair for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

STAR “JUMPS”

Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Extend both feet out to the side at the same time as if you were doing a wide jump At the same time bring your arms up so you form a “Star” Bring your feet and arms back to the starting position Keep the movements SLOW AND STEADY You can do the legs and arm movements separately or one side at a time if you prefer Repeat 10 TIMES or as many times as you feel comfortable doing

SEATED FRONT BOXING

Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Bring both your hands up to your chest and gently clench your fists “Punch” with one arm bring your arm straight forward until it is fully extended, but keep your other hand close to your chest. Swap arms and “Punch” with your other hand. Repeat the movements as if you were slowly trying to punch a boxing bag. Repeat as many times as you comfortably can and then rest.

ANKLE ALPHABET

Use a stable chair and sit comfortably with your back supported Raise one foot at a time and extending your lower leg “write” the alphabet with your foot – this will use all your ankle joint and muscles Repeat with your other leg You can repeat the alphabet with each foot as many times as is comfortable for you.

you are new to a gym it is very easy to spend a whole hour not making eye contact. Yes, exercise classes are different from working out alone, but even some of these can lonely. If you are stressed just trying to work out which is your left and is that the same as the instructors left and by then the instructor is going backwards, or is that your forwards, and while you are doing this there is no way you are able to say anything to the person beside you. With all this in mind we decided to offer Circuit classes as our group fitness. They are always interesting as the exercises are varied and constantly changing. There is cardio and resistance in every class so they supply everything you need. Because the equipment and free weights used allow you to use the resistance that is right for you, we can have clients from 25 to 86 in the same class, enjoying the fun and exercising at the right level for them. The number of clients in each class is limited, so you must book in, this means if you are not here 5mins before the class Andrew will phone you to make sure you are okay and that you’re going to be there. Yep, you are accountable and you are noticed! You are never just another face in the background fumbling your way through. You are constantly being watched by Andrew… constantly… watched… and definitely helped and encouraged. But the bestestest reason our clients keep coming to these classes, some for over 6 years, is that they are social

and fun. As I’m writing this there is a night class in progress, and, like every class, it sounds like there is a party happening in our studio. There’s laughter, music and chatting, because they are having fun while keeping fit. It’s really difficult to describe the atmosphere in our circuit classes, there is a lot of banter, no subject seems to be taboo and at the end of the hour I can confidently say that everyone has definitely smiled.

Exercise improves your health, your strength, your energy levels, how you sleep and most importantly your happiness. So if you feel like having a good laugh while exercising then why not book into one of our circuit classes. Greg Hunt Federal Minister for Health addressing the Longman community Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt talks to Longman residence about the Morrison Governments plans to improve health facilities in our region. by Sasha Hanton On Tuesday, August 27th Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP hosted the Bribie Island Health Forum at the Bribie Island RSL. The packed out forum had over 200 highly engaged members of the community keenly listening as Federal Health Minister the Hon Greg Hunt MP discussed the Morrison Government’s plan for the healthcare system. Minister Hunt started by announcing “[the] Caboolture/Sunshine Coast area will be home to Australia’s first residential treatment centre for eating disorders, and what’s interesting is this community… this community helped create the groundswell which changed the way we deal with eating disorders.” These residential treatment facilities will be rolled out across the country, in every state and territory but the first, as Minister Hunt said, will be located on the Sunshine Coast. Further plans for the healthcare system are focused on four major points; Primary Care, Hospitals, Mental Health and Preventative Health, and Medical Research. During his speech Minister Hunt elaborated and went into further detail on each of these points which include among other things: • A half a billion-dollar plan to bring more much-needed doctors into regional areas • Making new medicines accessible and affordable • Bringing in new forms of treatment; such as CAR T-cell therapy for cancer patients • A 100million dollar program for Seniors designed to give them support to seek the help they may need for mental health wellbeing • Building a national network of mental health services for Adults • A 5million dollar program to the Medical Research Future Fund Mental Health, in particular, is a personal passion for the Federal Health Minister who, speaking on the topic, said “I grew up in a house where my Mum struggled with Bi-polar. And it was at the time when people didn’t really talk about it. So… I buried it for 20 years and never talked about it until I was actually on Q&A and just the way one

of the questions was asked I started to talk about it… and when I came into this role I determined that for the first time we would raise mental health up to being one of the great pillars of the National Health System in Australia.” Decreasing the self-stigma that comes with Mental Health and aiding those at risk from Mental Health are also passions of the Prime Minister and Treasurer, Minister Hunt mentioned. Following the Minister’s presentation, the floor was opened up to questions from the members of the community in attendance. Many took the opportunity to ask the Minister about several healthrelated matters affecting themselves, family members and the wider residents in the Longman electorate. One man from the audience shared the story of his granddaughter who’d had sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection, and urged the Federal Government to increase awareness for sepsis, to this Minister Hunt was happily able to respond that the Chief Medical Officer was already working on this issue. Among those asking questions was Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP who raised the issue of after-hours medical services, which island residents are in dire need of. Minister Hunt was tactful in his answers to all questions offering to look into things and to try help where he could, but very admirably refusing to be drawn into making any false promises. As the forum drew to a close, and for those who still had questions Minister Hunt requested that everyone pass on their questions or concerns to Mr Young who, as Federal Member for Longman, could then follow up with him to provide responses at a later time. Following the forum, Minister Hunt accompanied by Mr Young visited the Bribie Respite Centre at Woorim for a tour through the facilities. Overall the health forum was a successful event with attendees ranging from medical professionals through to a diverse range of local residents with a keen interest in health care facilities and outcomes for residents on Bribie Island and its close surrounding areas. Mr Young said he was pleased with the response to the Bribie Island Health Forum. “I would like to thank the Federal Health Minister for taking the time to visit the Longman electorate and talk to the community at the forum and then at the Bribie Respite Centre,” he said. “We had a huge response to the Bribie Island Health Forum and the Minister’s visit. The event was completely booked out and it was great to see a full house. “It was great to listen to what the Minister had to say and I was pleased to hear so many good questions from the members of our community. “I understand the concerns of the people of Longman when it comes to the health and wellbeing of themselves and their families, and this is what this forum was all about. Giving them the platform and the opportunity to put questions to the Minister and get the answers they need.”

A new policy I wish to introduce if elected as Mayor to Moreton Bay will be a unique way for our region to consult directly with the Mayor’s office, I’m calling it “THE MORETON BAY COMMUNITY CONSULTATION COMMITTEE (The CCC).” If there is one thing which has become obvious to everyone is the need for our Local Council to be more open and listen to community concerns and that is exactly what this policy is all about. When these regular meetings occur, they will be attended by members of the community from each Division, the Mayor, The CEO and the Councillor who needs to be there to answer questions. I’m very familiar with what has gone on in the past when I was part of The Alliance (a community group made up of many groups around Moreton Bay) and I know just how impossible it was to organize a meeting with the Mayor. This new policy will change all of that. I hope you folks like this exciting new initiative because not many Governments would open the door for direct consultation with the pubic, I’m different, I want ideas and feedback on what’s going on in your life and I want to stop all the problems of the past. How we solve problems is based on how we, society, work together. Everyday, how we interact with others, unite and communicate impacts our personal actions but also those around us. Across the world unity is a vital aspect of a working community. Unity Day is celebrated in the month of October across the world. Although each country specifically focuses on a different topic, the message remains the same- that through support and recognising a person’s differences we are able to create a better society and a unified global community. In the United States of America, Unity Day is celebrated on the 23rd of October. The country has a specific focus on bullying, and the day aims to demonstrate and show a united front in the face of animosity. Across the states, people are encouraged to wear orange and give their time to charities supporting the cause. In Australia, our Unity Day is not so much a day rather a week-long event. Such celebrations of the joining of community begin on the 20th of October. With Australia being such a multicultural place, our country focuses on the unity between cultures and religion. One of the first events the week features is called a ‘Walk Together’. This event is held in various states and cities and features thousands of Australians walking together to promote and welcome migrants and refugees. The week also features a number of other activities which promote acceptance and team building. These activities are often extended to work places and schools, with some popular events including sports games and musical performances. In a modern society, with access to the world at our fingertips, it is often easy to forget

Unity Week not only promotes interactions across the community, promoting a unified society but it pushes people to band together and face issues such a pollution and poverty. Just take a look at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, all 17 of them. When the United Nations first released their plans to improve the world in 2014, many thought the goals were to far-fetched or unachievable. However, through the government, the people and the private sector working together, we are more than on track to achieve many of these goals. We are not asking for a miracle or for you to solve the world’s issues, but simply participating in a local community event or social activity promotes unity. We see it from families to the workplace, and it is such a vital part of our developing society. Simply taking the time to listen to some about their personal views or thinking about what you can do to promote unity is all that is required during the week-long celebration. We are Australians, and that is what we should be promoting this Unity Week.

Construction work on the Bribie Island Bridge Underpass continues even though it was estimated to be finished by August. There have been significant challenges which have unfortunately delayed the completion of the work. Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Member for Division 1, Brooke Savige said she was thankful for the community’s continued patience throughout the project and with the delays “A project this significant would generally have a 12-month planning process, however this wasn’t the case with these emergency works and consequently there have been a number of challenges throughout the project. “Recently the site has been subjected to vandalism and theft, with equipment and materials being stolen or thrown into the Pumicestone Passage despite increased security. This is disappointing and these actions cause considerable delays. However, the project is progressing and Concrete has recently been poured.” Recently changes were made to traffic management for the pedestrian crossing to allow greater stopping time for drivers, though Councillor Savige continues to urge all road users to take extra care through the area. this necessary research but appears reluctant to take firm steps to phase out the use of fossil fuels, coal-fired electricity and the clearing of our forests.

Which brings me to our current situation: bush fires. Many of us have asked the question, ‘Can rainforests burn?’ Obviously, the answer is yes, if they are dry enough and the wind is strong enough. Our farmers are crying because of the lack of water. Recently we visited a relative in Tenterfield, just over the border into NSW. We were asked if we minded not having a shower while we were there. Our southern towns like Stanthorpe are desperate for water as are our forests.

I have been thinking about islands. The English poet, John Donne, wrote, ‘No man is an island entire of itself,

Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.’ In other words, we are all connected.

Here in Queensland, we are spoilt for islands. Next week my partner and I will return to North Stradbroke. We’ve been to the Whitsundays, to Magnetic Island, Fraser, Heron and Lady Elliot. We especially loved Lady Eliot because of the many manta rays, the green

and loggerhead turtles, the humpback whales and all the birds and marine life. While it is distressing to read that the Australian government’s own experts warn that the outlook for the Great Barrier Reef has been downgraded from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’, and that ‘the current rate of global warming will not allow the maintenance of a healthy reef for future generations’; these experts also say that ‘the window of opportunity to improve the reef’s long-term future is now.’ Scientists are researching ways to fix the reef’s problems and our government is funding much of

lakes. Mars flourished then, while Earth was a toxic world of carbon di-oxide. Our oceans then - 8 billion years agowere acidic. But within a billion years from when Mars had so much water, all the lakes and seas there disappeared. Then something happened that blew my mind. About 3.8 billion years ago life began on Earth. According to Cox, we don’t know why this happened but isn’t it amazing that it did? A change happened because conditions were right. Earth transitioned from the chemistry of Earth to the chemistry of Life. Our little Earth, with all its natural wonders, including human life, exists today while the other planets in our solar system seem barren. Maybe there

In July the ABC showed the BBC series, ‘The Planets’ with Professor Brian Cox. It was a brilliant series that showed us the even more brilliant space program that involves exploring the solar system and finding out what went before. I learned that the red planet, Mars was once blue, with abundant seas and

could be life there, but we don’t know. We do know that we are the jewel in space - we have Life. To me this is extraordinary.

Today 7/10 of Earth’s surface is covered by water but global warming is reducing this. Forests are the earth’s lungs. Forests need water and so do we. We also need each other, not just on our own big island, Australia, but all of us on Earth. We have eyes to see and brains to think. We are all connected.

Cranky Lizard Speaks Just to kick things off on the right level – Cranky Lizard is well aware of matters that are unfolding at the Moreton Bay Shire Council. Cranky Lizard will, if and when appropriate, comment on these matters. Right now, considering the various levels of investigations currently being conducted it is simply not appropriate to comment except to say this…allegations are simply allegations until proven otherwise.

Cranky Lizard also points out that some the comments below have been influenced by the modern author and social commentator – Douglas Murray.

In Western democracies notably, relentless attacks upon our grand institutions of religion, government and political ideologies, have diminished societies’ faith and belief in these pillars of our communities.

In some instances, some of the attacks have been deserved. Religion, in particular, has attracted its share of stigma; but it is abundantly clear that religion is a vehicle for human activity which is almost always well-intentioned, and results in good work for the community which is of great comfort and assistance to many souls.

Religions, all of them, have for many centuries, provided humans with a reason for existence and we need that. Is it possible that for the first time in human recorded history? Humans of the 21st century, living in Western democracies have no explanation of why we are here or what our purpose is? Indications are that we are heading that way.

Of all our political ideologies, capitalism seems to provide some sense of purpose to our endeavours, socialism and communism, as a way of conducting our way of life have simply failed. And before you rush to your computer to express your outrage…Stop? Where on Earth is there a working example of a successful socialist society? A society that provides housing, education and health care within normal limits; a society that allows for freedom of expression of religious views, political views and guarantees certain individual rights. Cranky Lizard would be very interested to know where such a prosperous and intellectually generous socialist regime society exists, and, if it does, why are not all the socialists living there, instead of here and complaining about their lives.

Some kind of weirdness has overtaken our legislative chambers. Cranky Lizard understands that in at least one state in the Commonwealth an adult male can, without any form of surgical, chemical or medical intervention, make a public declaration that he now identifies as a female and can present himself/herself at a female sports club and expect to play amongst the female players. And the Club Administrators have no choice but to accept him! This act of biological bloody nonsense has been facilitated by legislation from a State Government !! I mean – really?

What is the purpose of this legislative rubbish? Who gains from this? Cranky Lizard is reminded of the words attributed to the Greek God Prometheus,

“ those whom the Gods’ wish to destroy, first they make crazy! “

Putting these matters into some reasonable perspective is interesting. Australia faces many major sovereign challenges in our current circumstances. How we manage our water? How we adjust our defence profile? How do we deal with an electoral system which affords election into our Senate with, in some cases, 1 % of the statewide vote? All of us know that life is not a dress rehearsal – this is all there is – and Cranky Lizard asks, “ Do our Governments need to be focussing on these peripheral matters when there are quite serious matters waiting to be addressed? “

Cranky Lizard does not speak for the sake of speaking or filling up space on a page. The issues raised today should give reasons to wonder just where we are all headed.

And, it is worth noting that each of us, those old enough, have the capacity to change things in our society that we don’t like. We have the superb facility of a free vote – something socialist and communist countries cannot abide. Therefore, it is evident, if you do not like what is happening to our community, tell your elected representative, do not be afraid to speak out. Make your voice heard. Enjoy your days.

(The LOCAL News Editor apologises for this Story not making last issue) On Sunday, August 18th local community members, young and old, gathered to watch the Bribie Island sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association - Australia (VVAA) march from the Bongaree Bowls Club to The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park for the memorial service. Parade Commander Jeff Korn led the Vietnam Veterans. The TS Koopa Drum Corp set the pace for the march in front of the veterans, leading the parade. Towards the back of the parade the TS Koopa Cadets and the Maritime Safety Military Cadets marched. Former VVAA President Paul Cooke served as Master of Ceremonies for the service commemorating the 53rd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan as well as the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Binh Ba. The Battle of Long Tan fought on August 18th 1966 saw 18 Australian soldiers dead and 24 wounded. On the third anniversary of the battle, veterans travelled to Long Tan and a cross was raised on the site to commemorate the fallen—a replica of this cross can be found in The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, Bribie Island. Originally known as Long Tan Day, to commemorate the men of D company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), August 18th is now the commemorative day for all Vietnam Veterans. The Battle of Binh Ba took place in June 1969 and is considered one of the most significant actions that Australian soldiers fought in during the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Raymond John Godfrey Royal Australian Navy (RAN) MID UCG Retired, was the guest speaker for this year’s memorial service. He served in the less well known Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV) which was integrated with the US Army 135th Assault Helicopter Company (AHC).

Other speakers during the service included VVAA Bribie Island subbranch President Rod Devenish-Meares, Reverend Colin Baxter Royal Australian Naval Reserve (RANR) Retired, Patron of VVAA Bribie Island Joy Leishman, Reverend Pierre Van Vlommestein, Ernie Hall, Doug Marsen and Phil Reeves. Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP, Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP and Moreton Bay Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige attended the memorial service and took part in the laying of the wreaths along with representatives from many other local groups. As the wreaths were laid bagpipes were played by local boy Lachlan Scott. A special thanks was made during the service to Superior Traffic Management who volunteered at the last minute to help out when the original traffic control the VVAA had organised fell through, without their voluntary efforts the march to the service would not have been possible. It was announced during the memorial service that Reverend Colin Baxter would be retiring from his role as padre, Master of Ceremonies Paul Cooke clarified after the ceremony that the Reverend is not retiring from the VVAA but from the RSL. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park is maintained by the VVAA, and in commemoration for this year’s memorial service a Kiowa Helicopter was erected on Wednesday, August 14th.

Local community groups were recently invited to a meeting to learn more about the events planned, and how important it was to the Committee to include the entire community in the planning, organisation and production of the Celebration. Nostalgic Father’s Day Event

Local Quilter Sweeps Ekka Awards

Local Beachmere resident Margaret Shingles has been making quilts for over twenty years and recently swept the pool at the “Ekka” winning in three categories. Margaret has been machine quilting using her Avante Handi Quilter for about three years but, prior to that, made her quilts and patchwork on her domestic sewing machine. This year Margaret’s entry in the Royal Brisbane Exhibition won First in Section 5 – Applique & Other Techniques and First in Machine Quilting. Margaret then took out Best in Show as well. Needless to say Margaret is overjoyed and very proud. Photos of the winning quilt are not available yet, as it will be entered into further competitions, but Margaret gave us a detailed description. “It was my very own design and in my favourite colours. I wanted to highlight the quilting technique rather than piecing or applique,” Margaret said of the quilt which took around twelve months to make. “It features a pieced eight point star on a white background with a circle of needleturn applique flowers in the centre, circled by quilted feathers with four sprays of flowers on the border in purple and grey.” This will be Margaret’s second straight year of wins at the Exhibition after winning First in Section and Best Machine Quilt last year with another quilt (pictured). This quilt was one of five which was then sent to Melbourne representing Queensland. It is an Adita Sitar pattern in autumn tones of black and grey featuring needleturn applique. Margaret teaches machine quilting at the Ningi Crafty Shed at Ningi Community Hall, and says she loves quilting and never stops learning.

Churches of Christ Care held a special Father’s Day Celebration BBQ for residents on Tuesday, 3rd of September.

A change in routine is a lot of work for the staff and volunteers to orchestrate but they were more than happy to put in the effort for their 130 residents.

The new due diligence: climate change on the agenda for home buyers

While due diligence has always been of upmost importance for those looking to purchase a new home, once, that simply referred to things like building and pest inspections, utility access and land boundary checks. These days though, as awareness of climate change and its potential impact increases, home-buyers need to think more broadly when it comes to doing their property homework. “While ensuring your home is built to withstand the harsh Australian climate has always been important, in today’s world, weather and environmental conditions are being more carefully considered,” said REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella. “With the government estimating increases in temperature, drought periods and bushfires, along with rising sea levels over the next few decades, home owners need to research whether or not these risk-factors are relevant to the area in which they’re looking to buy.” Ms Mercorella suggests researching the history of the area in terms of natural disasters and weather events, and how those impacted homes. “Has there been any major flooding, fire or severe storms in the surrounding areas? What damage resulted from those events? “It’s also a good idea to see if there

are any restrictions or exclusions on insurance, or higher-than-usual premiums. “You can also contact the local council to see if they have any information relating to flooding, climate change or other weather conditions that might impact the property, now or in the future.” With some councils planning to proactively warn residents about potential climate change risks to their properties, those considering selling their home also need to do their research, said Ms Mercorella. “Vendors need to be aware that buyers will have questions with regards to the possible impact of climate change. “They may even cite global warming or other weather risks as reason to reduce the sale price of your property.” Ms Mercorella said when it comes to due diligence relating to climate change and weather, it was important to be alert not alarmed. “Make sure you receive your information from credible sources. “Don’t make decisions based on rumours or hearsay. “But as always, due diligence is crucial when making what will most likely be the biggest purchase of your life.”

Last month a large fire started in the Bribie Island National Park, causing campgrounds to be closed and a devastating loss of national wildlife primarily due to smoke inhalation. Investigations are still underway as to the cause of the fire and as of September 2nd small areas of the National Park were still on fire. The following statement was issued by the Department of Environment and Science (DES) when contacted for comment on September 2nd: “The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) contained the fires in the northern section of Bribie Island and in the Noosa and Tewantin National Parks last week. “The Bribie Island fire was first observed in the northern section of the island, and it continued to burn in a southerly direction on the eastern side of the island, before being contained within the ‘Eastern Boundary’ track. “The total burnt area of this fire was approximately 2400ha. QPWS will continue to monitor the fire to keep it contained, with the assistance of HQ Plantations. “The cause of the fire is being investigated. “DES will conduct an assessment of the impact to protected areas and native species. “If crews locate any injured wildlife, they will arrange for care by a veterinarian or wildlife carer.” Many among the local community were shocked by the bushfire and are anxiously awaiting the results of the investigation into its cause. Moreton Bay Regional Council Member for Division 1, Brooke Savige said “The significant loss of our precious flora and fauna is disappointing for all of us. I thank the firefighters and the team from HQ plantations who worked as hard as they could in challenging situations to manage this fire.” A spokesperson for the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) said “BIEPA is of course extremely shocked and saddened by the suffering and huge loss of life amongst wildlife in the area, and the destruction of such an expanse of National Park vegetation.” “We do, however, appreciate the efforts of firefighters to contain and extinguish the blaze in very difficult conditions. “We understand that an enquiry is being held into the circumstances of this devastating fire. We trust that this is indeed the case and that measures will then be taken to reduce the risk of this happening again, at the start of what threatens to be a dangerous bushfire season.” Simone Wilson MP, State Member for Pumicestone, expressed concern over the recent bushfire as she said Bribie Island is incredibly vulnerable when fires get out of control. “Not only is there a risk for residents who live on the Island, our precious wildlife can be destroyed as we saw in these recent fires”, Ms Wilson said.

Recent fire in the national park taken over properties in White Patch Photo by Kevin Gould “These types of situations can escalate very quickly and it is a major concern to me that we have a one lane exit off the Island if we had to evacuate. “I immediately contacted the Minister for Environment when I became aware of the recent fire and asked for a full briefing.” “It is an absolute tragedy that this uncontrolled fire engulfed the Northern section of Bribie Island and resulted in the demise of many of our Native Flora and Fauna,” Ms Wilson said. “I have called on the Minister to fully investigate this fire and made it clear that I want a copy of any report on the incident. “Our local and rural fire brigades are to be commended for their work in containing this fire.” Ms Wilson has been keeping the community updated, via her Facebook page, with whatever information she receives. This includes updates on the enquiry into the cause of the fire, fire safety, as well as recreation area access for the National Park. On September 9th the DES Parks and Forests Park Alerts for Bribie Island National Park and Recreation Area read the following “Campsites 2 to 10 in the Ocean Beach camping area will open from Wednesday 11 September 2019. Fire has re-ignited in the vicinity of campsites 11 to 64 forcing their closure until Friday 20 September. QPWS is monitoring the situation and will open the remaining campsites when safe. The Northern access track from Poverty Creek turnoff north to Fort Bribie dayuse area remains closed until further notice. Visitors should exercise caution at all times when travelling in the northern part of the island. Spring Surprise- Hot and cold, windy and dry!

Previously, in my last article, I mentioned how great It is to be working outdoors especially among the new spring flowering blossoms and witnessing firsthand the myriad of pollinators interacting as nature takes its course. It’s also very interesting, how the weather lately has been so unpredictable with huge variants in temperatures swinging from 23 degrees daytime to 31 degrees a few days later and back to south westerly- cool winds, that would blow a dog off its lead, the hat off your head and the fragile new flower buds right off your plants for that matter. But I still love being amongst it all! With all this variation of temperature and unstable weather conditions with no rainfall on the horizon as I write this article, and all the fires that are scorching through the local bushlands once again, you know when it’s this dry and when our dams are dwindling fast also, that our gardens and lawns are stressing for irrigation to keep them alive too, especially with our sandy soils here on Bribie Island and surrounding coastal districts. I have mentioned dutifully over time, that the best thing we can do to our soil and for our plants and lawns, is to build up the organic matter and keep gardens well mulched with an open mulch that will not compact or become hydrophobic. It’s in these times of environmental extremes, hot, dry or windy conditions, that’s when the soil that contains compost, worm castings or composted manures and readily accepts applied irrigation, will assist the plants and lawns to withstand any moisture related stress, without sacrificing too much on the leaf, buds or fruit formation, due to excessive wilting, during the prolonged dry spells. You can well imagine, trying to irrigate your patch during these windy conditions of late and getting the irrigation to actually land in the root zone area would be a mean feat on its own, never mind if your soil is hydrophobic or your mulches have compacted over time making infiltration difficult, so the process continues- soil building, recycling compost- mulching, adding wetting agents if necessary and choosing the right plant that will handle the local conditions accordingly. The problems will really start, if our local dam levels go below the threshold of 50% and as a result water restrictions may be implemented, then it all comes back getting our priorities right, food crops- verses- lawns or two-minute showers, for the die-hard gardener (like myself) of course. Having water tanks plumbed to your stormwater from your roof will be beneficial when the storms do come our way and will certainly be a considerable and valuable resource when trying to keep your lawns and gardens hydrated this summer but it does not go far when the rain spells are few and far between, so best to be prepared, if you are considering growing a nice thriving garden or healthy lawn this spring build it up with organic matter now, control weeds before they seed and mulch to protect the soil and plant roots to give it all the best start possible, you will be glad you did! Alternatives to soil media, “The wicking system”- I mentioned a few months ago, for those who missed it, is well worth researching as it conserves moisture by percolating through a pipe in the bottom of planter box and you fill the pipe up with water and the plants roots access the moisture by the process referred to as-‘wicking’ (absorbed by osmotic pressure from bottom of planter to the top, by the plant roots system) there is minimal waste and this is especially great for veggie plantings and great when water restrictions are imposed. Let’s hope that it doesn’t come to that, and the dams fill once again before restrictions of any sort are implemented. So here’s hoping your sward or patch is staying hydrated and also hoping the rains will come to fill our dams to ease the stress. Also our thoughts and prayers for the less fortunate, our farmers and friends who are in severe drought throughout our country already, and our neighbouring communities who are also battling bush fires too. Westringia fruticosa -

Coastal or Native Rosemary

An excellent, hardy, drought tolerant Australian native plant, that is also tolerant of coastal salt spray conditions, Westringia fruticosa, is an old favourite indeed. Westringia, is a member of the Lamiaceae family, making it a relative of the Mint, Lavender and Salvia, to which the similarity of the flowers with the two upper lobes and three lower lobes can be readily identified. There are some 25 species of Westringia, growing naturally throughout Australia in every state except Northern Territory. There are many cultivars now available which are generally more free- flowering and grow to a more reliablycompact habit. Westringia fruticosa, has been widely cultivated for many years on the east coast of Australia and hails its origins from the NSW coastal districts, where they can be seen hugging cliffs and growing near front line sand dunes. The foliage of Westringia fruticosa is grey to dark green, narrow and pointed and set closely in whorls around the stem, the underside of leaves have a silvery tint. Each leaflet is approximately 2cm in length and the flowers are generally- white to pale mauve, with light- brownish spots around the throat. Coastal rosemary, flowers in spring through summer and can spot flower throughout the rest of the year. Westringia fruticosa- (original form), likes well-drained soil, they detest water logging, and compacted mulches, can grow to 2mt tall and 2mt wide and they are easily propagated by cuttings. Among the many cultivars, there is a variegated form- called W. fruticosa- ‘Smokie’. And In the image above, they are also a favourite for bees!

Spring, is the best time to get organised with all your planting, pruning, fertilising and lawn renovation requirements before the heat of our summer really kicks in. If you have some plants growing in the wrong situation at home, perhaps not enough light or too much midday sun, then now is a great time to consider replacing or replanting them. Although typically in spring, our weather is not normally as dry as the weather we are currently experiencing and our lawns would normally be ready for renovation too, but as rainfall has now become scarce, we have to really think about the whole scope of works very carefully. I remember when I was transplanting some Crotons and Cordylines a few years back and pulled the plants out and set them aside under a tree in the heat of summer while concreters came in and created some slabs and garden edging. As I knew this was going to happen in advance of course, I had irrigated the plants in question thoroughly the night before their removal and again in the following morning. I also sprayed some antitranspirants - trade name: (‘ENVY’), liberally all over the plant’s foliage in preparation for the big moment. After a few hours the hot winds kicked in, so I wrapped the root balls in hessian bags and moistened them once again in preparation for replanting. Unfortunately, the concreting procedure took most of the day, so I had to come back the following day to replant the poor buggers- but to my amazement, the plants looked as good as they did when they were firmly rooted in soil, the foliage still firm and stems had retained the turgidity and colour, it was unbelievable that such a simple spray on product could be so useful in times like these, while keeping the plants hydrated enough to tolerate being snatched from the environment in mid-summer. Soil wetters and penetrators, when applied, either by granules or hose on, work best if you can add some irrigation to get the product into the soil profile where the roots are, and a couple of watering cycles may be required to get the benefit of the product into your soil, but if no rainfall is on the horizon, this may compromise the soil wetting ability and as a result may need a follow up treatment. Great for our hydrophobic soils but some surfactant products, may actually set back the microorganisms in the root zone also. A possible remedy here, would be applying some diluted seaweed by hose on applicators, a few days after the soil wetters were applied, as it can assist in recovery, due to the seaweed’s natural gibberellins and amino acids which can strengthen the cell walls of plants and turf grass, which also assists them to be more tolerant of dry spells in the future and is good for the soil biota too. Any potted specimens that may have dried out a little should be rehydrated with plain water first and let drain off before applying tonics or fertilisers for optimum results. As with any treatment, the more hydrated the soil or plant, the better result from using these tonics will be. The best medicine is to irrigate firstly as most treatments will not be absorbed efficiently when the lawn grasses are showing signs of stress (leaf rolling), as the leaf blades try to minimise further moisture loss to aid in its survival while waiting earnestly for the rains.

Living without forests. Living in a trashfilled environment. Suffocating in in greenhouse gases, in the sorrows of the last generation. These circumstance will be the burden of the next generation if we don’t act now. In the last few weeks alone, 84,000 fires have been documented in the Amazon rainforest, effecting the environment and the economy: yet social media coverage is limited. With fires all over: animals, plants, undiscovered objects and native clans are suffocating and dying out. Sadly, these fires started as a controlled choice to deforest, have become major forest-fire. Fires so big – they have been seen from the international space station. Yet, the media, logging companies and society want to hide away from our decision to deforest.

The Amazon rainforest – the essential lungs of planet earth – is in danger. A substantial amount of damage has been done to our largest oxygen producer, thus effecting the entire planet. These fires release more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, pushing global warming to the extent where –if nothing is done in the next few years – it will soon be irreversible.

An email was recently sent to Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) regarding concern for the welfare of students walking home from school along Godwin Drive. Roddie Mac, the sender of the email, had previously expressed concerns to Council and a copy of this email was forwarded on to us here at The Local Island and Surrounds. It is replicated verbatim and without any editorial editing below:

“Good afternoon. I have mentioned this three years ago to council in regards to my concern for the welfare of students walking home along Godwin Dve. Some students in excess of 100 walk home through the entrance of the aquatic centre which is on the Godwin Dve a road allocated 70 km/h. The students then walk north along a footpath which has no safety barriers and not even a guttering. So a vehicle could possibly slide across the road and onto the footpath without any impediment.

The second issue is some children need to cross this road to get to the eastern side. There is currently no crossing or provision for the children to cross. They can wait at the roundabout for some time because vehicle traffic is heavy due to the school finish time. Some

This affects everything; lives, jobs and futures. Who needs a botanist if there are no trees? What happens to the animal food chain once an animal becomes extinct? But yet society is more concerned about the like button being removed from Instagram. Furthering this, every single article covering the fires was posted this week but they have been ravaging for several weeks. This clearly shows that the coverage of this tremendous issue has been insufficient.

The lack of coverage was recognised by the World Wildlife Fund who tweeted, ‘There was a worldwide outcry when the Notre Dame cathedral hit fire. Why is there not the Dame level outrage for the fires destroying the #amazomrainforest?’ (Foxnews.com, 2019).

We as a society need to know the extent of the issue. We must not turn a build eye to the problem hoping it will go away, for future generations will pay. The coverage and lack of concern clearly demonstrates the issue is with humankind. Soon, we will be suffocating ourselves. The Amazon rainforest must be saved: not just to save lives, but to save the future of humanity.

Councillor Savige said “Having now considered the issues raised I can confirm that I will be progressing these concerns and suggestions with council staff for consideration. It is managing ecosystems of human-machine co-existence and deploying artificial intelligence technologies to obtain results, solve problems and enrich employee experiences at their workplaces. Local Lads A Huge Congratulations (Bongaree Bowls Club Div 5) won Brett Sellars!

Brett Sellars won Bronze at the State Multi Disability Lawn Bowls Championships held in Mackay this month. A huge achievement bringing home the Bronze Medal out of 22 bowlers in the Men’s single class. Brett is a member at Bongaree Bowls Club.

Moreton Bay District Bowls Pennant Finals this month. The Moreton Bay District Bowls Association held the Men’s Pennant finals for all divisions at Bribie Island Bowls Club on Sunday the 8th September.

Bongaree Bowls Club 5th Division team successfully beat Dayboro to win the final in that division.

Congratulations to the 12 players who played on Sunday. They were Barry France, Barney, Bruce Rawson, Ian Virgen, Merv Miles, Brett Sellars, Brien Skerten, Max Nganeko, Jake Mc Garry, Glen Merrin, Pat Pierce and Arne Jensen. As the competition is played over 11 weeks there were other players who helped this team to reach the finals. WELL DONE BOYS. Brooke Savige, Division 1 Councillor for MBRC was there to support the teams. This team will now participate in the Men’s South East Qld Zone Pennant Finals in October. The 12 Team members. The Bribie Island Bulldogs Australian Rules Football Club have won an epic grand final running out 18-point winners. It was a great game with all the team playing their roles to finally claim the Premiership Cup they so much deserved. Jake Hedley, Tim Wagner, Tate & Tyler Gilmore and Ben Howe all were sensational through the midfield and the backline held strong lead by the elusive Harry Crombie and smothering machine Jesse Dobson Munday but it was champion forward Joshua Bear booting 4 goals in what he describes as one of the greatest moments of his life. Planning and strategies are already underway for season 2020, We want to continue to develop the club right from the little Aus kickers and U10’s right through to the Seniors. The Seniors were not the only success story this year

with the U12 boys going deep into the finals and the U13 girls team playing some great footy in what was there first year.

Bribie Island Boat Charters

September Fishing Report

Mid-Spring is always a tricky time for fishing. Everything is starting to warm up and move into summer conditions, but it’s not there – yet. Around Bribie, halfway through August is generally when the water is at its coldest. September’s nights have been just 1 degree warmer, but the daytime temperatures have lifted more than 3 degrees, lifting the water temperature to about 20 degrees. The warmer water helps to “wake” the fish a little and get them going after a lure or bait. With practically no rain this month (just 4mm!), the water has been pretty clear.

George knows how to find the flathead! This one was too big to keep but good fun to catch. There haven’t been many really windy days but, just lately, there’s been enough wind to push the surface water around, stirring it up - which often encourages some of the bigger fish to have a go. Seasonal changes affect temperature, salinity, water clarity, nutrient quality, among other things – which all dictate which fish to target, how to do it and where to go. Between-seasons fishing is often less about skill and more about luck. Christian and Reid were out last week – they saw lots of fishing boats, all of them moving about, looking for the best spot, but not much in the way of big catches. They caught under-sized bream and small whiptails, but still – a good day’s fishing … Quinn and his Dad, on holiday from England, had a lot of fun fishing from a boat as well as from Bongaree jetty. They found lots of legal bream, which they didn’t keep, as well as plenty of little ones. Quinn was just happy with his 12cm tuskfish, which lived to see another day. The best-sized bream have been hanging out under the bridge – try fishing just after the top of the tide, using pilchards. Other good spots for bream are Elimbah Creek and Sandstone Point. Sandstone Point has been also handy for whiting. Live worms and freshly caught yabbies worked for Joe. Going further south to the mouth of the Passage, early mornings and rising tide especially, the whiting have been giving some excitement. Use long trace-lines and light sinkers – so the bigger fish don’t shy away. Elias and Josh went even further out earlier this month and got onto a school of tailor, courtesy of the giveaway sight of circling gulls. They found silver slugs

were a good lure to cast among the tailor. It’s near the end of the best of the tailor, but it’s worth keeping a lookout for a feeding school. Of course, the warmer temperature should also be waking the sand crabsSeptember is the beginning of the months with an “r” for crabbing. Brian has been putting out his pots – he brought in 12 nice, heavy sand crabs from four pots, a few days ago. Let’s hope there are more coming! There are still plenty of flathead being caught in the Passage. With the breeding season underway, there’s a good chance of finding quality flathead. Over the top of the tide, try the banks in the middle of the Passage, using lures. During the falling tide, sit at the draining end of a gutter. Trolling any type of bait that holds together has also been working well, when on the drift. George, a local fishing enthusiast, has a few tips: “I find using 4-6 inch paddletails works for the larger flathead. In clear water, use natural colours; in murky water, use bright colours. A Zman 4’’diesel minnowz, paired with a 3/0 weedless hook should help you get into the action – it’s flatty season, tight lines everyone!”

New fishing regulations now effective

Future Queenslanders will continue to get access to fresh local seafood and thousands of jobs will be protected under changes to fisheries regulations that come into effect today. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the changes were part of the Government’s plan to protect fish for the future. “Our state’s fisheries belong to all Queenslanders and it is our job to protect fish for the future,” Mr Furner said. “Some of our fish stocks like scallops, snapper and pearl perch are at risk, with stock levels under the nationally recommended 20 per cent biomass level. “If we do nothing now, we will have to take more drastic steps like they are proposing in South Australia with the closure of the snapper season for three years. “Quite simply, if there are no fish, there is no fishing industry here in Queensland. “Introducing catch limits for at risk species and continuing to crack down on illegal fishing will help us rebuild numbers.” Changes for commercial fishers include: • Establishing new total allowable commercial catch limits of 42 tonnes for snapper and 15 tonnes for pearl perch. There is currently no catch limit on these species. • Expanding vessel tracking for remaining commercial fishing boats from 1 January 2020 • Small area closures to protect juvenile prawns in South East Queensland to improve profitability for trawl operators Fisheries Queensland will soon send affected commercial fishing licence holders detailed information about the new commercial catch limits and

reporting requirements. Mr Furner said almost 1 million Queenslanders went recreational fishing in the state last year. “To ensure recreational fishers can continue to catch fish, we need to have sensible limits to protect fish for the future,” he said. Changes for recreational fishers include: • Introducing new annual seasonal closures for snapper and pearl perch from 15 July – 15 August. • New boat limits, which hold the operator of the boat responsible for ensuring no more than two times the possession limit for nine priority black market species – mud crab, prawns, snapper, black jewfish, barramundi, Spanish mackerel, shark, tropical rock lobster, sea cucumber –is on board at any time. For example, the personal in- possession limit of mud crab will be 7 and the boat limit will be 14. The boat limit does not apply to charter boats. • General possession limit of 20 fish, excluding bait. • Reducing mud crab limit from 10 to 7. Queensland Seafood Marketers Association President Marshall Betzel said the changes were just part of the overall strategic reforms that industry has been waiting for. “The QSMA is hopeful these regulation changes will play an important part in providing not just a sustainable supply of seafood products to the consumer, but also create a long-term vision for growth in the Queensland seafood industry,” Mr Betzel said. “We hope these reforms will help provide long term jobs growth in the industry as well was provide a better degree of certainty of supply for future generations of seafood consumers.” Minister Furner said introducing the changes now meant we would continue to have Queensland fish on the table, protect thousands of jobs in both the commercial and recreational sectors and protect our marine ecosystem and the Great Barrier Reef. “The Palaszczuk Government has comprehensively consulted over the past two years on these reforms,” Mr Furner said. “There has been a lot of myths about these changes and what it means for fishing in Queensland. “I encourage anyone who loves to fish to find out for themselves how the Palaszczuk government is protecting fish stocks for our children and grandchildren by visiting our website, fisheries.qld.gov.au”.

News many have been waiting for – and isn’t it about time!

After a great deal of lobbying the State Labor Government to get on with upgrading the highly dangerous Bribie Island Road/Old Toorbul Point Road intersection, I can announce that progress (albeit it not as fast as I would prefer) is starting to be made. As locals would know, the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection is currently a give-way controlled T-intersection that deals with significant traffic volumes to and from Bribie Island Road. For parents taking their children to and from St. Michael’s College it’s a daily nightmare. This intersection has been on the top of my concern list since becoming the State Member as too many crashes and near misses are too frequently reported. In fact in the period 2007 to 2017, 16 crashes have been reported in this location. Fishing rule changes throw Transport and Main Road informs that the upgrade project will include:  traffic signal installation Queenslanders overboard  additional lanes on the Bribie Island Road approaches (two lanes for each intersection approach in addition to left and right turn lanes)  a signalised pedestrian crossing from Bribie Island Road  on-road cycle lanes  bus stops on both sides of Bribie Island Road. The below concept plan is provided for consideration. Design is scheduled for completion in late 2019 with construction anticipated to start in the first half of 2020.

Palliative Care and Voluntary Assisted Dying

Hundreds of family-owned commercial fishers, many in our own backyard, will be forced out of the industry due to the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s unfair fishing regulations that came into effect this month. Whilst we all support a sustainable and healthy industry, Labor’s reforms are amongst the most stringent and challenging the seafood industry has ever seen. Generational fishing businesses and jobs are being whipped away due to Labor arbitrarily squeezing them out, by reducing their quota to unsustainable levels. All these changes are being imposed on fishers without a cent of compensation. If Labor want to see commercial fishing jobs lost to regulation changes then the least it could do is to provide these hard-working Queenslanders a dignified exit with a suitable buyout or compensation. Changes that came into effect earlier this year have already seen increased red tape and fisherman feeling let down and unsupported by a Government and a Fisheries Minister who tout support for the commercial sector only when photo opportunities arise. I’m pictured here last year with Tony Perrett MP, Shadow Minister for Fisheries and local fishermen discussing the changes and impact on the fishing industry.
