Dear Editor A recent decision was made by the Qld Minister for Transport, Mark Bailey indicating that in July there will be five roosting platforms installed on the Bridge for the pelicans to return. Whilst this offers some relief to our beloved pelicans, I struggle to understand the logic of only five roosts. There are about 12 lights spanning Bribie Bridge and most of us are used to seeing every one of them with a pelican sitting atop, the proud keepers of the Passage. With only five roosts it will now be a case of first in best dressed! But if five are what we get back then we’ll take them no matter how bittersweet it is considering what the pelicans once had. I want to praise the wonderful community we have who took up the fight for our pelicans. Thank you also to Chris Wilson (aka Pelican Lady) for standing beside me every step of the way and to the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association for getting involved. On the 20th of June, it was announced that five pelican roosting platforms will be installed on the Bribie Island Bridge.

After months of protesting, locals are relieved that there is a solution being implemented. The five new perch platforms will repurpose the bridge’s old lights and sit over the water, opposite the new LED lights and will be installed next month, weather permitting. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has said Bribie Island residents had shown how much they love the island’s pelicans, and the new solution would ensure the pelicans could continue to roost on the bridge without damaging the lights.

“After residents told me concerns earlier this year, I asked the department to look at solutions. I’m pleased that crews will now install dedicated roosting platforms for the pelicans on the bridge so residents and visitors can continue to enjoy their presence as they drive along the bridge,” Mr Bailey said. Speaking with the President of the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) Management Committee, Diane Oxenford, earlier this month the ideal solution would have been for the deterrents to be removed.

“The spikes have the potential to tear the pelicans’ webbed feet if they attempt to land on the deterrents,” she said. Mr Bailey has said “Unfortunately, road crews were constantly replacing lights on the bridge that were damaged by waste from the pelicans sitting on

top of them. It often meant workers replacing the lights also needed to partially close traffic lanes, which was often costly and inconvenient for locals. It’s great that we’ve been able to come up with a solution that means the birds can continue to roost on the bridge while retaining the energy efficient LED lights that are providing better, safer lighting  and reducing ongoing maintenance costs.”

However, there are still concerns as the deterrents will remain and platforms are only being put out for five instead of all

This month we have deviated away from our traditional Close Encounters Story to talk about the new Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane which celebrates its grand opening on Friday 26th July. This is not a new story across the music industry but it’s a big story for music and entertainment lovers in South East Queensland. The Fortitude Music Hall will be the largest ballroom/ theatre styled venue in Australia with a 3000-person standing and 1100 seated capacity. Described as a Modern Art Deco Design and located in the heart of Fortitude Valley Brisbane, the developers and owners of the venue have been inspired by some of the world’s most loved live music venues – from classic art deco theatres to larger clubs, while still paying homage to the iconic venues of Brisbane’s past including Festival Hall and Cloudland. Many of our readers will have visited or known about the historic Brisbane entertainment venues including Cloudland and Festival Hall which were the ‘go to’ hubs for everything dance, music and big events from the early 1900’s to the early 1980’s. The history of both city venues is extraordinary. Festival Hall, originally known as Brisbane Stadium was built in 1910 and renamed Festival Hall in 1958 after a major rebuild. It had a capacity for 4,000 people and was the largest indoor public venue in the Brisbane inner city area and it remained the city's primary indoor venue for more than forty years. The venue hosted many hundreds of bands from the Bee Gees, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, U2, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, Frank Sinatra, AC/DC, Bob Marley & the Wailers The Police, INXS, Hoodoo Gurus, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sex Pistols, The Prodigy, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Regurgitator and many more. The venue was closed and demolished in 2003. Cloudland, located in Bowen Hills was opened in 1940 and provided a hub for the Brisbane community to attend balls and dance nights. It was the original intention of the Cloudland Developer to construct a larger entertainment venue called Luna Park – this was the original name of Cloudland. It is probably fortunate that the venue was left abandon soon after it opened. After the Cloudland developer departed the scene in about 1941, the venue was used by the American military who arrived shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed in December 1941. When Cloudland was re-opened after the war, the name Luna Park was dropped, and the building was known as the Cloudland Ballroom. It’s incredible that as a gift to the people of Brisbane, the Cloudland Dance Floor was rebuilt by the US military before they departed. The hard floor was constructed of one-inch tongue and groove boards that ran the length of the ballroom. The narrow floorboards were not nailed. The floor area, reserved for dancing sat on huge metal coil springs placed uniformly underneath the bearers so that dancers could feel and see the movement of the boards beneath their feet.

Both my mum and dad grew up in Yeronga and St Lucia, in Brisbane respectfully. Mum recalls going to many balls and dances at Cloudland. Mum said, “I attended quite a few balls at Cloudland and some dance nights. The bands were always 15 to 20-piece bands. It was all about dancing, having a glass of lemonade and piece of cake and catching up with a few friends and hopefully being asked for a dance.” My dad said, “I also went to many dance nights and balls at Cloudland. I used to study at night in the city and would often head to Cloudland after college with a few mates and have a dance. It was all about having fun, the skill of dancing and maybe finding a heart. It was never about the grog or getting plastered - in fact there was no alcohol expect what we brought in ourselves in small flasks and mixed with lemonade,” he said. “During the war, Cloudland was most welcoming to the US Soldiers who would join in many dance nights. It was the US Soldiers who introduced the Jitterbug Dance Style which took off across Brisbane.” Dad pointed out that music and dance is the essence of life and recalls going to see a few bands at Festival Hall. My mum and dad are in their early 80’s. Cloudland was demolished in 1982 and the site was subsequently developed into an apartment complex. In keeping with the history, the Fortitude Music Hall has been located in the heart of Brisbane’s Music and Entertainment Precinct, Fortitude Valley. The Fortitude Music Hall will house five bars with a great range of tap beers, an extensive back bar selection and fine wine choices catering for all tastes and wallets. The focus is on quick service and high-quality products. In their own works, the owners are keen to make sure that every drink served is a ‘darn good one.’ According to the Fortitude Hall’s available information, the Music Hall concept first started when Scott Hutchinson of Hutchinson Builders purchased a large commercial building in the heart of the Brunswick Street Mall. The team behind The Triffid, Secret Sounds (The Falls Festival & Splendour in The Grass) and Live Nation (The leading force behind iconic venues worldwide such as House of Blues and Fillmore Theatres) joined forces to develop The Fortitude Music Hall. The team travelled across the world and visited leading edge venues to research what makes a venue great. The owners drew inspiration from beautiful Art Deco theatres and venues that previously existed in Brisbane and were torn down in the 80s. The main influence came from 3 specific venues – Cloudland, Festival Hall and The Fillmore Philadelphia. The goal of the owners is to create a venue that will enhance the area and one that the community will enjoy and benefit from for many years to come. Bring back more live music for all to enjoy. As a local to the New Farm and Valley in Brisbane, I can recommend a night’s stay at the local hotel and perhaps booking in to see one of the upcoming bands – two of my upcoming favourites will be The National (USA) and The Beatles Abbey Road Live. Upgrade to amenities for Toorbul Esplanade Moreton Bay Regional Council is set to begin an upgrade to the foreshore amenities at Toorbul Esplanade near the intersection of the Esplanade and Freeman Road, Toorbul.

Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige said council awarded a tender to Anchor Building Services Queensland Pty Ltd to carry out the project worth more than $230,000 at its council coordination meeting today. “We are to going to build a new unisex disability toilet within the building and a fully accessible, disability compliant car space and kerb ramp,” Cr Savige said. “This is more than just an amenities’ upgrade; this is about giving independence to people with a disability so they can get out and about and enjoy our great outdoors.

Spokesperson for Disability Access Councillor Denise Sims said the project was in line with council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan.

“We adopted the region’s first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2018-2022 last year to make our region more accessible and inclusive for people living with disabilities and to improve access and inclusion in our community and this project reinforces our vision,” she said. Cr Savige said there would be a temporary disability compliant toilet on site for the public to use while the existing toilet block was closed while works were underway.

Works will begin in coming weeks and take eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Beachmere loves dance

No one needs a reason to dance, but now Beachmere has plenty.

When local Beachmere dance teacher Leisa Stock found she had some time on her hands, with daughter Lana becoming more involved in teaching classes, she didn’t let the grass grow under those tapping feet and jazz hands. Leisa started organising classes for those a little older than the school children she used to teach for over ten years. Leisa says that current research shows that dance is now regarded as the “top” activity because we have to use our brain as well as move our whole body. “Along with the obvious physical benefits that include increased strength, balance and flexibility, the improvements to our brain function are pretty impressive,” Leisa said. “The part of the brain that is linked to memory, learning and emotion is actually enhanced as we dance. Why? Because we are constantly learning new steps and patterns, and then also remembering them without the help of the instructor - and our brain loves that.” Leisa says that each course is structured so that you will learn, and remember, a full dance routine and different levels are used when teaching so beginners, as well as those with dance experience, are welcome. Leisa has some great reasons for joining in her dance class but, perhaps, the most important – getting out and being social, meeting new people and some old friends. And it’s so much fun...

Why Change = Opportunity for Your Business Changes are part and parcel of all our lives. From the day we arrive in this world, change is inevitable. We are constantly changing as we grow. Learning. Evolving. This goes on for our entire lives.

Being in business it's exactly the same. Periods of growth and evolution. Change is not unusual, but there can often be resistance to change “we’ve always done it this way” and the feeling that “if it works, let’s not rock the boat”.

However, when you are in business it is important to take a helicopter perspective, to watch trends and be on the lookout for opportunities to grow your business. Those who are able to maintain a big picture perspective are often the first to see an opportunity. Sometimes changes are planned and other times they are thrust upon us by circumstances; what is important is how a business manages the change. Being individuals means we each react in different ways, but being in business means it's important to be proactive.

Is there any feeling so desolate as the shocking realization that your cocoonlike world of social media contacts and personal verification systems have disappeared in front of your very eyes and that you are no longer able to talk to the world you have created in your social media ?? I mean – is there ??

The first reaction is one of disbelief; this can’t be happening to me? Can it? But, Oh Yes, it can, and has, as the full horror of the situation creeps over your horizon. Unsaved work, lists of email addresses, possibly diaries attached to an email system, digital subscriptions to newspapers, your daily lifeblood all denied! You look at your equipment and wonder what it was that caused this unholy mess in your life? Did you press the wrong key? Did you respond to the prompt the wrong way? Your mind thrashes around trying to make some sense of it all – quick solutions flood your thoughts, just reboot the bloody thing, that’ll work! Does not !.

The next step in this process is to draw back a bit and talk yourself into being calm and looking at the problem dispassionately – as if that is possible ?? Mumbling to yourself is always pacifying, but will not bring back the

Resistance to change is usually driven by fear. Fear of how they will be perceived for doing something different to the norm, fear of leaving the safe confines of a comfort zone, fear of ditching a business model that has been in place for many years, or fear of moving to another way of doing things because it is so different.

Even if it is unwieldy or unprofitable, it is often a security blanket. After all, it is safe when you know how things work and what is going to happen at each stage of the game. On the other hand, to change means stepping into the unknown. It’s kind of like jumping out of a plane

lost world. A quick cup of coffee, a phone call to a friend explaining the horror are actions which follow in quick succession. The friend, although wanting to help usually twists the knife by innocently asking, ‘ What did you do wrong ? ‘

There it is – it is you who have destroyed your world!! Redemption pops up its head over the wall like ‘ Kilroy was here ‘ – a fleeting glimpse and a flood of relief as you grasp, like a drowning person. Onto the idea of “ back-up. “

Of course! I have done my backups and all is saved. Oh, what relief? Now it is just a matter of connecting up the backup drive, run it and back to normal.

This is the point where the cruelty of life strikes like a sword through your heart. As you seek to connect your backup your screen remains black, as a dog’s guts. Because you did not renew the backup package when it asked you to - ‘ job for another day ‘ – you whispered. So, there you are, confronted by your dead computer, smothered in guilt because it is your fault that it is dead, I mean, whose else could it be?

Surprisingly only half a day has passed, although it seems as if your life has been consumed. Thought processes begin – should I fix this? Is it worth it? Maybe I can take it to a ‘ geekaroo ‘ place, and they will save the data on the hard drive, re-load it all back into a new machine and life returns to normal? Now, this process is normal and will effectively give you back contact with the ether and the globe. But, deep in your heart of hearts wriggles a small worm. A small worm that could have some unwanted outcomes. This is the small worm of the last porn page you accessed two weeks ago when you were twothirds of a way through a bottle of red and you were home on your own!!

Our cooking classes are popular because they help everyone understand what foods can go together to make a delicious and nutritious meal. They also teach important skills for household management. At our cooking classes, people are also involved in preparing the food and cleaning up. And we even organise for our cooks to go out shopping and buy the ingredients.

Our aim is to provide people with the tools and confidence to take good care of themselves, go out and about in their community, make friends and ultimately, get more out of life.

Seaweed has been eaten for centuries as it is a highly nutritious food source, containing omega3, high levels of protein, iodine and other key minerals. The Chinese, Japanese and South Korean people eat seaweed every day and seaweed is believed to be the secret ingredient to the healthiest population of people in the world in Okinawa, Japan. It is so good for gut health in animals as well as humans that it can reduce methane emissions, when fed to cattle, by over 80%. The Australian Seaweed Institute’s team recently attended the International Seaweed Symposium in Jeju, South Korea and was fascinated to learn from the inspiring stories of new seaweed communities that are popping up in USA and Europe to provide new jobs and protect the local environment. Seaweed is a valuable product and is used in food, cosmetics, animal feed, bioplastics and organic fertilisers. Also, clothing, shoe fabrics and replacements for plastics products are now being made from seaweed in some countries. In the London Marathon recently, plastic bottles were replaced with seaweed pouches of sports drink in order to reduce the pollution footprint of this huge event.

Growing seaweed in the ocean is very similar to oyster farming and it does not damage or degrade the environment like intensive fish farming can. There is no fresh water required, no feed or fertiliser is added and there is no waste stream. Better still, seaweed ocean farms actually regenerate oceans by taking up the carbon dioxide and pollutants from the water and seaweed provides habitat for marine life to flourish. Recently the Toorbul & Donnybrook Pensioners’ Club held its AGM at Toorbul. The current committee was congratulated, and the new committee received their badges from our local member Simone Wilson. They Said “Simone is always a welcome visitor at the TDPC and she always likes coming to our small community. “ Their President is Ruth Eaton, Secretary – Sandy Fortescue, Treasurer – Pauline Threadingham. Other members of the Committee are Gavin Topping, Jan Stephensen, Jo Burke, Judy Doyle, Julie Brecht, Judy Glanville and Sylvia Jackson. They said “We are looking forward to a great year ahead. Our first major activity is a Seniors Art Expo Day on 17 August. Lisa Curry says slow and steady wins the fitness race

When it comes to fitness and exercise, Olympic swimming champion Lisa Curry says health should be treated like a race – not to outperform others, but to consistently strive to break personal bests.

The co-founder of women’s lifestyle brand Happy Healthy You, with its 200,000 Australian women and counting in the online group, says women are comparing themselves to other mums, grandmothers, colleagues and family members with weight and fitness levels, when they should be focussed more on trying to create a healthier version of themselves.

“We women can be pretty hard on ourselves. We look at Instagram, we look at friends and colleagues our own age and we evaluate where we stand. It almost comes naturally to us that we compare ourselves, so I want to encourage more women to just redirect this attention away from other people and back onto themselves. MEASURING YOUR AMAZINGNESS EVERYONE IS AMAZING! In some way, somehow, at some time, every one of us is amazing.

The trouble is most of us will not acknowledge our amazingness. And for some reason only known to an old, wrinkled, budda shaped sage hiding in a cave atop a snowy mountain in his unicorn onesy and bunny slippers, women are far worse at acknowledging their amazingness than men are. Not sure why this is as I have yet to climb that particular snowy mountain and ask the unicorn onsey clad buddery sage that particular question, but as soon as I know, I will definitely let you know. Meanwhile back at sea level I constantly watch our clients do amazing things

This is because amazingness is a very individual thing. What is non-amazing to one person is incredibly amazing to another. For instance, if you have always had the ability to stand up, bend over and touch your toes, then seeing someone else do this is not gob smackingly awesome. But if you have never in your 80 years been able to touch your toes and then by improving your fitness you find that one day you can – yes! It’s Officially Amazing!

Now this also doesn’t mean that the person who could always touch their toes is not amazing, honestly as someone whose toes have always wiggled out of reach no matter how I try, anyone who can achieve this is on my amazing list.

and then as soon as it is pointed out to them the females will rapidly deny their amazingness, the males will usually give me a look that says…. “Duh! Of course I am amazing!” yes, sad but true. The trouble we have as a Personal Trainers is being able to measure this amazingness, and this makes it sometimes difficult to show the achieved amazingness to our clients.

I also don’t think that wanting to be amazing should be the reason to do something. In fact I’m pretty sure that all those amazing people who are acknowledged for their amazingness never thought “I will swim the Bass Strait 19 times non stop wearing only zebra stripped budgie smugglers and copious amounts Outer Mongolian yak grease to prove how amazing I am!”

Senior Gentle Back Stretching Before You Start

These stretches can be done on a soft mat on the floor or in your bed. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these stretching exercises stop! Start slowly with each stretch and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the stretches and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Take each stretch SLOWLY and CAREFULLY and make sure NOT TO HOLD YOUR BREATH. Remember, stretching is a great way help with movement and balance and to also help relax tight muscles. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one stretch a day will give you improvement in your movement over time. So get comfortable and relaxed on your bed or a soft mat on your floor and lets get started

PELVIC TILT STRETCH

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor Keep hands on the tummy so you can feel movement of abdominal muscles and the low back as you correctly perform the pelvic tilt. Reverse the curve of your low back. Gently press the lower back against the floor by tightening the abdominal muscles and tilting or rolling the pelvis backward. Hold for 3 seconds, then relax all muscle contraction and allow return of curve in low back. Repeat slowly, only do as many as you feel comfortable doing . Each time you practice the stretch try and hold each tilt for a little longer until you can hold it for 20 seconds.

SIDE KNEE DROP

Lie on your back and bring both knees up toward the chest. Keep the shoulders flat on the floor as you allow the knees to drop to one side; only allow the knees to move as far as comfortable; Do not allow pain to develop. Keep the lower back flat on the floor or bed to avoid injury. Hold position for 10-30 seconds. Bring knees up to the midline and repeat on the other side. Hold position for 1030 seconds. Repeat until back feels more relaxed and looser

KNEES TO CHEST BACK STRETCH

Keep your back and hips muscles relaxed while doing this low back stretch, so most of the work is done with the hands and arms. Do not cause pain during this lower back stretch, only a feeling of gentle traction. Lie on your back. Grab your knees. As you pull them up toward your chest monitor the feeling of stretching the low back. Move slowly and breathe during this stretch. Slowly push the lower back into the floor. Do this 8 to 10 times, making sure when you press down your lower back that you keep it there for a count of 5 - 10.

PRAYER POSE BACK STRETCH

Assume the posture for the prayer pose stretch, as shown here. Hold this posture and relax, while stretching the fingertips forward and the buttocks backward until a comfortable and gentle stretching sensation is felt in the spine and low back. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat as many times as is comfortable.

Nope I’m pretty sure that they did it just to prove to themselves that they could. Now, as you try and remove that mental picture forever from you mind, I want you to consider YOUR amazingness, and telling yourself you are not amazing at anything is not an option, because that’s just not true. Yes, I will admit to being told I’m amazing by people. This is because I challenge myself to do things others find difficult or scary. I love to lift heavy things and then put them back down. I don’t think that’s amazing, to me it is what I enjoy doing and lifting heavy stuff is one tiny reason why I like to exercise, not the most important reason, but one on my long list of why I push heavy weights. I also take part in speech contests, and most people find public speaking insanely scary, and so did I a while back, but now the more I do it the less amazing I think it is because now it is my normal. But just like everyone else, when someone tells me it’s an amazing thing I do, I giggle nervously and say “NO! Anyone could do it if they tried” Because HONESTLY anyone can! You just have to start and keep going! All of our clients have challenged themselves and improve their health and fitness. They are ALL achieving amazing results from these changes.

every day when only a few weeks ago they never went for a walk. Going for a walk amazing??? Not to some, but to someone who found walking around the supermarket difficult then yes! And just because no one tells you that you are amazing it doesn’t mean they don’t think you are. We tend to think people are judging us for the wrong reasons, but this isn’t true! If you decided to try a little jog while you are walking and you see someone looking at you, most women will think “oh no they think I look ridiculous!”. In reality the person watching is most likely thinking “Look at her Go!! I wish I could jog too!” So if someone tells you they think you are amazing don’t mumble that you aren’t. Say thank you, be proud and see if you can help them find their own amazingness. Maybe they want to be able to do as well as you are, and in that case encourage them to join in with you and be amazing together. Embrace your amazingness!!! Herbal Teas for Health.

Having a cuppa is a special time of getting together with a friend, chatting over a cup of herbal tea, taking the time out for yourself from your busy day, or relaxing in the evening. It somehow has a nurturing effect and this can be emotionally and physically. I love a beautiful personalized cup or mug or tea pot, harvesting herbs for tea, or buying a beautiful new blend. Having your favourite tea in your favourite cup does wonders for the soul. Unlike coffee and regular tea, herbal teas do not contain caffeine, and have an amazing array of beneficial qualities, tastes and healing properties. Herbal teas can help you to feel calm and relaxed, aid digestion, help you to sleep, boost your immune system to fight off and reduce symptoms of colds and flu, reduce inflammation, help detoxify, and so much more. Different parts of different herbs are used to make tea. It may be the roots, leaves, flowers, seeds or even the bark. Generally these are dried and then steeped in hot water. As a general rule, the longer the herbs are steeped, the greater the strength. If you can grow your own herbs for teas, this is ideal. If you buy tea either loose or tea bags it is best to find organic teas to minimize the risk of pesticide residue. Herbs can be used individually or in a combination. Peppermint tea is my every day favourite tea. Another favourite of mine is Chai tea. Generally this includes a mixture of whole spices including cinnamon, cardamon, cloves, ginger, pepper, and

may or may not include black tea aswell. Chai means spice blend and can be known as masala. Properties include anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, aiding digestion, cardiovascular support. A chai latte is made on any type of milk. (Be aware when you order this from a café it is often based on a syrup or powder that has high amounts of sugar). Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. UNFORGETTABLE EUROPE RIVER CRUISING WITH APT We had the most amazing Tour Director on our trip, Daniela, who was a wealth of knowledge, care, kindness, humour and was very passionate for her job, and went completely out of her way to ensure that all of her APT group were happy and cared for. We started our journey in Budapest on the ms AmaReina, and ended our adventure in Amsterdam. The captain and crew were very attentive to all of us on board this lovely ship. We experienced the amazing Imperial train journey in Budapest starting with a Welcome Reception at the Budapest Station’s Royal Waiting room. We then boarded the Grand Empress Steam Train which was such a great experience, chugging along in the steam train, enjoying a sumptuous lunch on board. We ended this day with a visit to the Godollo Palace.

Cranky Lizard Speaks

What is the “ Public Interest “? Who has the authority to decide?

Keep in mind that the visits were related to the possession of classified documents without authority. Cranky Lizards needs to tread very elegantly through this poisoned garden because Court Action has begun and Cranky Lizard does not want to blunder through the legal crush of curly wigs, pompous red faces, flowing black robes and clouds of moths billowing from the same. No Sir, he does not. But, and it is a significant but……….as far as Cranky Lizard is concerned none of the media, or journalists involved has denied actually having the documents – or, at least, it is reported that way. No doubt the Court will determine the rights and wrongs of these matters; experience in this field leads Cranky Lizard to smile wryly and pose two questions: if you are in possession of classified documents without authority, what are you doing with them? And where did you get them from?

We are also hearing and seeing floods of words about broken employment contracts and raising money to conduct Court cases to defend your self against employment termination and religious beliefs. Obviously, Cranky Lizard is referring to Israel Folau and the undignified nonsense swirling about this increasingly crazy matter.

Cranky Lizard has not read Israel Folau’s employment contract, and Cranky Lizard is willing to bet five handfuls of beach sand that very few of the learned and opinionated commentators have either. What they are offering the public is their opinion on the matters relating to the termination of employment and the use of public forums to raise funds to defend yourself.

Cranky Lizard has noticed a lot of noise recently, from the media, I mean, when isn’t there? But more than normal over the visits by the Australian Federal Police searching homes, offices and buildings including computers, mobile phones and other modern media devices. The AFP has been conducting visits to gather information about the misuse of classified material from the Australian Government. Material which according to media reports has been in the hands of journalists and television stations for some time. The subject matter of the material in question is the conduct of Australian troops on the battlefield.

Cranky Lizard is driven to comment about this. But before launching into a wild tirade that makes no sense to anybody Cranky Lizard is drawn back to the material itself; and asks the question – well, just what is classified material anyway?

Classified material from a Government point of view is information, pictures, images or other matter which may relate directly or indirectly to events that have passed, that are passing or that will pass the uncontrolled knowledge of which, may affect their successful outcome. That is Cranky Lizard’s very rough definition. It is not a Government definition, but it broadly assumes that too much knowledge is dangerous to a wide range of people. We all bloody know that, and Cranky Lizard is not going to go any further into these murky waters except to say that if you really don’t need to know what is happening in certain places at certain times then that is a very good thing. And, in a broad sense, that is also the definition of the ‘public interest. ‘ There

is hardly an adult in this country that does not understand that Governments conduct operations in the name of the sovereignty of the nation, and, that for many reasons these operations or even the fact that they are happening is not a matter of public interest. To protect this information and the people involved the information is classified by persons who are in a position to make that judgement; information which is classified becomes protected by law and possession of it, without proper authority becomes a criminal offence.

There is a not a journalist in this country who does not know that – and there is not a journalist in this country who does not know that if you have possession of classified information without authority, you are committing a criminal offence.

No ifs, no buts – a criminal offence.

For all sorts of petty, criminal, malicious and mundane reasons there are human beings who believe they, and only they, have some ordained right to gather this information illegally and then spread it around in a compliant media. Regardless of the consequences to other people, in some cases fatal consequences. There are examples – Wikileaks, Chelsea Manning etc. these are well-known cases and serve Cranky Lizard’s purpose in illustrating how dangerous it is to allow classified information to flow freely into the public domain.

So, having said all that, so what?

Cranky Lizard began by commenting on the noise by the media over the AFP visits on various journalists premises and also the AFP visits on various media outlets.

Tropical Cyclone Oma Damage under repair – Bribie Island Bridge Underpass

Since March this year the underpass beneath the Bribie Island Bridge, a popular thoroughfare for pedestrians and cyclists, has been noticeably closed off. This is due to damage sustained during Tropical Cyclone Oma which caused the collapse of the underpass’ retaining wall.

For the safety of locals the Moreton Bay Regional Council has been working to have the damage repaired and the underpass improved, design plans were finalised in mid-March and have been implemented. As works continue Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige has thanked locals for their patience while repairs to the underpass are undertaken. “Safety is a priority for council so please be mindful of the crews working on site and of directional signage while works are being carried out,” she said.

When Cranky Lizard began this adventure with the wonderful newspaper, it was stated early in the game that Cranky Lizard would comment, criticise and draw attention to matters of public interest which drift from the normal…and we are drifting far from normal here.

Cranky Lizard has no sensible comment about the termination of employment because as previously stated, Cranky Lizard has not seen the contract and therefore, any comments are really pointless. I mean the contract either said you could talk about God or you can't talk about God. If it is the first case, then the matter is over, and you get out the cheque books. If the latter is the case, then the matter ends there, along with the employment. Cranky Lizard sees little point in commenting on the decision of the GoFundMe page to cease support of Israel Folau. Subsequent events have demonstrated that the decision was ‘ an own goal ‘ of decent proportions.

This young man believes in his God and the words written in the Bible about certain matters, it is obvious that these words are divisive in today’s environment and struggle to find common acceptance –but these words are written in the Bible, the Book of Christianity and Cranky Lizard notes that no one has suggested that the Bible be banned – not yet anyway! He believes in his God, and he says so. Good for him. Good for him. Cranky Lizard is a Christian and believes in the principles of Christianity.

Cranky Lizard also says that if you have a God, whoever and where ever that God may be – express your belief, be strong, be loud about what you believe in… because there will always be some drongo, who will try to stop you talking.

Don’t let them. Speak out. Enjoy your days.

At this time each year, 35,000 Rotary Clubs around the World hold a Changeover Dinner/Ceremony, bringing new leadership, new ideas, a new theme and renewed energy to each Club. This changeover of leadership occurs throughout Rotary - at International, District and Club level.

Bribie Club President for 2019-2020 is Jeff Eustace, taking over from John Oxenford. Jeff is keen to carry on our involvement with the three Island schools. Our members will work with the newly established Interact Club at Bribie Island State High School (BISHS) and continue to work with our EarlyAct Club at Bribie Island State School. We will continue to pay for hearing tests at Banksia Beach State School and continue our Community Link Program at the two primary schools.

Rotary’s new International President is Mark Daniel Maloney, a lawyer from Alabama USA. Mark replaces from Barry Rassin. Mark’s theme for 2019/20 is ‘Rotary Connects the World’. He said ‘Rotary allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences. It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.’ Darryl Iseppi from the Rotary Club of New Farm, is our District Governor for 2019/20. He takes over from Wendy Protheroe. Darryl wants to implement Mark Maloney’s vision of building a stronger Rotary and to grow our membership. For the year ahead as we focus on ‘How Rotary Connects the World’, Darryl said his goal is to ‘ensure that we promote the great work of Rotary to a wider audience’. He feels ‘we need to enhance the opportunities for members of the public to be formal ‘Friends of Rotary’ if membership is not an option. Local and International projects are to be maintained. (And) we need to celebrate our 75 year partnership with the United Nations (UN) and Our Internationality. To do this there will be a major celebration in Brisbane on 13-15 March 2020. Rotary currently holds the highest consultative status that the UN offers to non-governmental organisations. Our Club will be sending a team from Bribie Island State High to Canberra to compete in the National Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in 2019, and again in 2020. MUNA is a Rotary project designed to

As well as MUNA, we will pay for students from BISHS to attend the National Youth Science Forum and the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Caboolture our first Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program for BISHS students will take place on 20 August. We have provided financial assistance and mosquito nets for the BISHS team going to Cambodia in September. Also we have engaged the services of ‘Coding Kids’ who will provide a series of professional development workshops for staff responsible for the delivery of the 2019 Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Program at BISHS. We will continue with our “Make a Difference Plant a Tree Project” with another planting day on Friday 26 July. On this day we will be planting native coastal vegetation along Woorim Foreshore to restore habitat and improve dune stabilisation. On Friday 21st of June, Lisa Curry MBE OAM became the inaugural ambassador for Hairdressers with Hearts (HWH). Lisa Curry and her brand Happy Healthy You have come on board to lend her voice and public profile to this terrific cause.

Earlier this year on the 8th of March, Lisa attended the local Bribie Island RSL International Women’s Day Lunch.

“When I was here speaking at the luncheon, Sonia mentioned that they couldn’t finish their website because they didn’t have the funding to finish the website. So I thought it was the least that we could do. So Happy Healthy You, which is our company, just donated the rest of the money for them so they could finish their website and get it up and running, because it’s such a great initiative and unfortunately it [domestic violence] affects probably someone you know,y nearly one woman a week dies from domestic violence. And not to mention all the women who are left scarred by it as well, and men it’s not just women it’s women and men,” Lisa said. The former Olympian truly believes in helping empower women.

She said “We [Happy Healthy You] work very hard on empowering women in all parts of their lives… when people take our product, one of the first things that they feel from it is that they feel a sense of calm. And sometimes having a sense

of calm instead of feeling reactive is important as well. So we work very hard on educating and informing women about how to feel good about themselves and therefore that spreads throughout the family as well, the family unit.” And having experienced family domestic violence in the past the cause of HWH really spoke to Lisa. “The fact that there’s one every week [woman] that’s dying at the hands of someone, and often someone that they know, it’s not good enough. And I think the initiative is amazing, hairdressers are beloved people… they form a great bond and hairdressers become counsellors in a way, they’re not really trained to be counsellors but through Sonia’s initiative you know they’ll have the resources and the contacts to really be able to help anyone that comes in looking for a safe place to be and looking for some information that they can actually use to help themselves. I mean it’s not just hairdressers, it’s barbers as well. Sometimes men feel threatened, men can feel threatened by women or men can feel threatened by other men, kids can feel threatened in their family environment like it’s just a vicious circle in a lot of areas,” she said. Celebrating NAIDOC Week in Moreton Bay Celebrate NAIDOC Week in Moreton Bay and recognise the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the nation this month.

Over the past five years the Bongaree Bowls Club has gone from running at a loss to having a special place on the Bowling calendar. Chairman Barry France and Treasurer Marilyn Weston, who took over about five years ago, have helped to turn the club into a success. Now the once struggling local club is running at a profit and has teams from all over Queensland travelling to the island for their annual Men’s Invitational. The club’s annual Men’s Invitational Carnival that is held on the 2nd weekend of June each year works as their major fundraiser and is a huge draw for the bowling community. For the event 28 teams compete in Men’s fours, and so far they’ve filled the numbers every year. Chairman Barry France said of the event “We’ve been running it for five years… we’ve got teams from South Lismore, Canungra, Oakey, Pittsworth, Wynnum, Holland Park, Pelican Waters, Kawana Waters, Bribie Island and Solander and we had six of our own club teams… A lot of visitors come to the island for the weekend but normally turn up Friday and go home Monday, and it’s a major event. The Bongaree Bowls Club is known as the friendly club with only 20% of their members being competitive, they are more about the social element of Bowls. However, this doesn’t stop them from enjoying the friendly competition during the carnival. Besides the carnival a key aspect of the club’s turnaround success has been the growth in their membership. A huge part of which Treasurer Marilyn Weston says is thanks to their partnership with the University of the Third Age (U3A). “[We’re] just about to finish four years connection with U3A. When Barry and I were first on the board, a few of us had a meeting just trying to decide how we were going to increase our membership which will only increase our funds and we approached U3A about doing a training program as one of their subjects. At the beginning of each school semester, we do a six-week training course as a subject through U3A and it’s been extremely successful in us gaining new members.” Treasurer Marilyn Weston said. Relying on sponsorships from local businesses, green fees and raffles for their income the club are happy to continue expanding and strongly encourage anyone interested in coming to learn, as it is free to learn. The club with its community and social focus encourages members to form teams and allows members to play mixed every day—knowing that it’s important to not make members feel divided from each other. The club is active every week from Tuesday to Saturday. Last week a constituent contacted my office following his trip to the Caboolture Waste Management Facility as he went to dump a small ute load containing green waste, an old lawn mower and some general waste. Entering the weighbridge asked the attendant to explain what the new dumping process will entail come 1 July 2019. Below is the advice provided by weighbridge attendant using the exact same materials he had in the ute as the example: 1. Enter dump 2. Proceed to weighbridge to have entire content weighed 3. They promise that Queenslanders won’t be stung by the levy but seriously 15 steps to drop off some waste will be nothing short of a debacle at the dump. Not only will this absorb more time for people to dump material, it will cost them more in petrol as they hover around the facility, create incredible frustrations for both Council staff and consumers and will ultimately impact on council resources to deliver what was once a free dumping service in our electorate. You simply can’t believe what you are being told by the Palaszczuk Labor Government - we are now all paying for this levy in one way or another.

Last month, Queenslanders were asked to put their best suggestions forward to name six soon to be crime-fighting canines for the Queensland Police Service, and today Police Minister the Honourable Mark Ryan MP announced their names. Running for three weeks, the competition to name the T Litter caught the imagination of the Queensland public. “We received just shy of 28,000 suggestions, proving just how much the Queensland public values the work of the QPS Dog Squad,” Minister Ryan said. “I can reveal the final names, which have been chosen based on some of the most popular submissions. “They are Tank, Turbo, Thurston and Trigger for the male dogs and Trixie and Tay Tay for the female dogs. Minister Ryan said some of the names had significant meaning behind them and it was important for the Dog Squad to

Our society strives to reach equality and justice. In order to maintain such beliefs, our court systems must adhere to the strictest of rules and concepts. However, in many circumstances, outcomes of cases and legislation do not reflect such ideals. In the twenty-first century we are continuously concerned with being heard: whether that be voicing opinions on politics or prevalent societal issues. The 17th of July is another day on which society rallies to support social justice. International Justice Day is recognised across the globe as a date to support the International Criminal Court and their proceedings. The ICC is an internationally recognised court which deals predominantly with crimes against humanity. Furthermore, the day aims to promote rights for victims of the crimes, as well as a recognising the need to accurately prosecute those that threaten the international community’s safety. Such movement pushes us to become not only involved but also educated about issues impacting the entirety of the globe. In order to create positive change, it is vital that we understand how widespread the problem is and realistic actions that may limit the development of the issue. This day pushes for an understanding of the legal system and crimes. Inadvertently, through such an action we are promoting a deeper understanding and passion about politics. Moving forward it is imperative that we recognise the importance of education and equality,

but arguably more importantly that future generations understand the impact that their voices can have when joined together. Throughout the years International Justice Day has raised awareness about various issues. Most recently, people used the day to highlight the large scope of people that had been victims of domestic violence and further campaigned for stricter laws regarding violence against women. Justice is not only about seeking the imprisonment of criminals but ensuring that legal systems across the world are catering to the rights of the victims. While we discuss the negative aspects that plague our society, the recognition of problems creates a sense of community. People band together, eager for change and progression forward. Ultimately International Justice Day, like many other awareness days, pushes society towards peaceful outcomes and reinforces the ideals of both humanity and compassion. Hearing other’s stories, understanding their experiences and how those experiences have shaped their life creates a space in which we become more open to change and acceptance. While, yes, these actions are created through masses of people marching for change, they also occur through small, simple acts. Having just a basic understanding of societal issues, politics or the legal system- and sharing that knowledge- allows for a generation of people willing to speak their mind. A generation who are accurately informed of such problems. We have the ability to be catalysts for change.

Budget 2019-20 invests in Queensland’s regions and businesses

The Palaszczuk Government say they are delivering for Queensland businesses and regional councils with $146 million in additional grant funding in the 2019-20 state budget. Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the Building our Regions (BoR) program, Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund (AQIAF), Jobs and Regional Growth Fund (JRGF) and Made in Queensland (MiQ) program would all receive a funding boost in this year’s budget. “These funding programs support Queensland businesses and regional councils, creating jobs, investing in infrastructure and growing our economy,” Mr Dick said. “Building our Regions Round 5 will receive $70 million over four years to deliver critical job-creating infrastructure to regional communities to improve liveability and economic conditions. “In partnership with regional councils, the Palaszczuk Government will continue to fund projects through BoR that have strong economic outcomes in local communities, delivering thousands of regional jobs. “The $295 million available under previous rounds has seen 223 infrastructure projects funded across regional Queensland, supporting more than 2400 jobs and attracting additional investment of $487 million from councils and other organisations.” Mr Dick said AQIAF would receive an additional $45 million, bringing total funding for the program to $150 million. “The Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund offers financial incentives to encourage projects to relocate or expand in Queensland,” he said. “To date, AQIAF has supported 14 projects which will generate more than 1090 new direct jobs and over $360 million in private investment during the next five years.” The successful Jobs and Regional Growth Fund will receive an additional $25 million from this year’s budget, bringing total funding to $175 million. “JRGF has seen 17 projects announced, along with nine election pledges, creating nearly 1000 operational jobs and supporting up to $485 million in capital investment in regional Queensland over the next five years,” Mr Dick said. “This will stimulate ongoing regional employment and support sustainable economic development by assisting and accelerating private sector projects.” Meanwhile, the MiQ program will be boosted to $46 million in this year’s budget to continue to support small-andmedium-sized manufacturers to become more internationally competitive, with $10 million to be allocated this coming financial year. “Made in Queensland is a practical

initiative that is boosting regional manufacturing,” Mr Dick said. “Round 1 saw an investment of $18.2 million in Queensland’s manufacturing sector, which is expected to generate more than 530 direct high-skill jobs over the next five years. “Through MiQ Round 2, we allocated a further $17.6 million to help 25 businesses around our state innovate and expand. “These businesses will ultimately employ an estimated 538 additional people over the next five years. “Queensland’s manufacturing sector is worth $20 billion each year to our economy and provides jobs to more than 173,000 people,” he said "A strong local manufacturing sector means more Queensland jobs, and more jobs means a stronger Queensland.” The 2019-2020 budget has also committed $60 million for the implementation of The Spit master plan on the Gold Coast and $19 million to deliver the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024, including $15 million for an industry development fund.

Labor legacy of higher taxes, more debt, less jobs and less infrastructure

Deb Frecklington leader of the opposition said “The Palaszczuk Labor Government is simply not up to the job of managing the economy after their fifth Budget locked in higher taxes, more debt, less jobs and less infrastructure for Queensland.” “After five years in power, all Labor is delivering is higher taxes, more debt, less jobs and less infrastructure,” Ms Frecklington said. “New taxes, $90 billion of debt and almost 160,000 Queenslanders looking for work is the sum of five years of Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Higher Taxes

“Treasurer Jackie Trad has piled more than $3.45 billion in extra taxes and charges on Queenslanders in just two Budgets. “Every dollar Labor takes from Queenslanders hurts the economy and destroys jobs. “When Labor run out of money, they come after yours. “This Budget alone will rip $1.25 billion out of the Queensland economy through new taxes and tax hikes over the next four years. “Nowhere has ever taxed its way to prosperity.”

More Labor Debt

Ms Frecklington said while Labor charged ahead with its high-taxing agenda, debt was soaring to a staggering $90 billion. “Labor is putting us further into debt to pay for their wasteful spending, such as changing hospital names and Al Gore lectures,” she said. “Labor can’t manage money. “Queensland has endured five years of Annastacia Palaszczuk and Jackie Trad but their legacy of tax and debt will last a lifetime. “Labor’s debt represents a burden of $16,795 for each and every man, woman and child in Queensland. “The debt bomb means billions of dollars will be unavailable in the future for natural disaster recovery or infrastructure projects, and there will be less money for

nurses, teachers and police. “Jackie Trad has jeoparadised the future of Queensland to save the skins of Labor MPs at the next election.”

Labor’s Infrastructure Lie

Ms Frecklington said the great Labor lie of this Budget was in infrastructure. “Labor aren’t borrowing to build - they are borrowing to cover their wasteful spending,” she said. “Labor’s IT projects are now almost half-a-billion dollars over budget, they’re fixated on changing the name Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and they’ve slugged taxpayers a fortune for lectures by Al Gore. “Labor’s Budget actually cuts infrastructure spending by $23 million in the budget year and over the forward estimates. “There’s also a $500 million reduction in infrastructure spending in 2019/20 compared to previous forecasts. “Labor is delivering less infrastructure, but more debt. “Queensland has the lowest infrastructure investment as a percentage of revenue in the nation.”

The Forgotten Regions

Ms Frecklington said the Palaszczuk Labor Government had forgotten regional Queensland. “The other great lie of the budget is that it is for regional Queensland. The money Labor is actually spending on infrastructure is being funnelled into a handful of inner-Brisbane electorates for their pet project Cross River Rail,” she said. “Labor is ignoring the infrastructure needs of regional Queensland. “At the same time, Labor is holding the resources industry to ransom and holding back projects Central and North Queensland are relying on new jobs. “The Palaszczuk Labor Government is anti-resources, anti-regions and anti-jobs.”

Less Jobs

LNP Deputy Leader and Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander said unemployment in Queensland was far above the national average under the Palaszczuk Labor Government. “This Budget shows Jackie Trad is obsessed with saving her own job at the next election rather than creating jobs for Queenslanders,” Mr Mander said. “Jobs growth has plummeted, with 26,000 less jobs predicted than in last year’s Budget. “This is a further blow to Queensland’s workforce, with almost 160,000 people looking for work. “The unemployment rate in Queensland is far higher than Victoria and New South Wales. “There is a jobs crisis in regional Queensland and much of the South-East – and key indicators point to unemployment only getting worse. “Business confidence is at rock-bottom while construction is grinding to a 13-year low. “Our economy is barely growing and investment in our state has collapsed. “Queensland is hurting and it’s a direct consequence of the Palaszczuk Labor Government. “Instead of delivering tax relief, Queenslanders have been taxed even more by Labor. “Instead of a plan to responsibly pay down debt, Labor only has a plan to burden our kids and grandkids with debt. “Instead of creating jobs for Queenslanders, the only jobs Labor care about are their own. “This Labor Government is going nowhere and it’s taking Queensland with them.” Ms Frecklington said her speech in reply to Labor’s Budget on Thursday would outline her vision for Queensland and plan to create jobs and opportunities in every corner of this state.

People to celebrate

By R. McKenry Refugee Week falls in June each year. I am reading a book titled Going Back: how a former refugee, now an internationally acclaimed surgeon, returned to Iraq to change the lives of injured soldiers and civilians. The author is Munjed Al Muderis, with Patrick Weaver. Al Muderis now works in Macquarie University Hospital, Sydney, and has led the world in a procedure called osseointegration. He implants titanium rods into the human skeleton and attaches robotic limbs. This gives the patient much more mobility and comfort that earlier prosthetics did. I can’t help thinking what a loss it would have been to Australia—and the world—if his refugee application had been refused. What if he’d been imprisoned indefinitely, even without being charged as a criminal? Instead, he has been able to lead the world with his skill. He fled Iraq in 1999 when working as an orthopaedic surgeon in the Saddam Hussein Medical Centre in Baghdad. One day some Republican Guards demanded all surgeons stop what they were doing. Three busloads of army deserters and draft dodgers were outside. Saddam Hussein had ordered the surgeons to cut off their ears as punishment. If they refused they were shot. Al Muderis hid, then escaped to Australia. In 2017, at the request of the Iraqi government, he returned to Iraq to show what could be done to help amputees and others. It took courage to return but he did and has since returned regularly. I’m sure being a politician is difficult especially when a decision has to be made that has a profound effect on someone else’s life. It must be hard to choose between what is morally right yet politically a drawback. In the name of ‘Border Control’ people looking for safety have been sent by relevant Ministers to Manus Island or Nauru, with no hope of ever being released. This is wrong. Another book I recommend is No Friend but the Mountains: Writing From Manus Prison by Behrouz Boochani. He is an Iranian-Kurdish journalist who got his master’s degree in Tehran. He joined the National Union of Kurdish Students which was outlawed in Iran, so he was watched closely. When he and his friends published a Kurdish magazine, the Iranian authorities were angry. One day when he was not in the office, eleven of his colleagues were arrested. The arrests were posted on-line, and the news spread quickly. Boochani went into hiding. On 23 May 2013, he fled Iran. He has been on Manus Island since August that year but has continued to write and stand for human rights. In January 2019 his book won Australia’s most distinguished prize for literature. Boochani had to use a mobile phone to send his writing, sentence by sentence, as a text message to his friend Omid Tofighian in Australia. Omid translated it from Persian to English. In his acceptance speech, Boochani said, via video, ‘I truly believe words are more powerful than the fences of this place, this prison.’ He also said, ‘I don’t have the right to celebrate because there are so many people around me who are suffering.’ Boochani is in his sixth year of imprisonment without charge. He doesn’t want to come to Australia. He just wants to be free. Imagine what a contribution he could make if his freedom was here. How many other highly skilled, good people are there in detention? What contribution could they be making here? How long will they be denied the opportunity? And is this fair? Is it moral?

Budget Time Capsule for Pumicestone

Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson says that the Palaszczuk Labor Government has put Pumicestone into a time capsule in this year’s State Budget. “Today we discover what the Palaszczuk Labor Government really thinks of the Pumicestone Electorate and the tax payers who live there”, Ms Wilson said. “This year’s budget is nothing more than slim pickings for Pumicestone with the only new local announcements being $2.5 million for additional classrooms at the Pumicestone State School and $615,000 for a car park at the Banksia Beach State School”. Moreton Bay Regional Council will hold a series of free grant workshop sessions starting next week to provide information about the latest funding opportunities from Council. Spokesperson for Parks, Recreation and Sport, Councillor Koliana Winchester, said free information sessions were held across the region ahead of each grant round opening.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the highly targeted, tailored approach is exactly the right way to help specific sectors of buyers. “We need positive policies that help the target group and don’t wreak wholesale damage on the entire property market and the broader community, as Labor’s proposed negative gearing reforms will do. “The Liberal Party initiative offers help in a meaningful way to those seeking to get their foot in the door of their first home and doesn’t cause detriment to other sectors of the market. This is a policy that was drafted with the many moving parts of the property market in mind,” Ms Mercorella said. “The rental market and the sales market don’t operate independently of each other. Everything works together and right now, the biggest threat to the health of Queensland’s housing market is the proposed negative gearing reforms.

“Our concern is that limiting the number of investors in the market will decimate the rental market, pushing up rents and driving down the level of supply,” she said. “More than 34 per cent of Queenslanders rent their home, among the highest levels of the most populous states. Our market relies on a steady supply of investors providing rental accommodation for our rental population and Labor’s proposed reforms will diminish that crucial activity,” Ms Mercorella said. “Independent modelling from SQM shows that Labor’s negative gearing reforms will also de-value people’s homes, driving down the value of their biggest asset. “We should help people get a leg up, but not at the expense of those who have already begun their home ownership journey.” Media enquiries:

Birali Steiner School Official Opening Stage 1 Building Programme

Andrew Webb, Birali’s architect, spoke about the project and the early days when temporary approval was given to start the school in the Beachmere Community Hall. From such humble beginnings, the school has moved onto 26 acres on the outskirts of Beachmere with students enjoying the purpose-built space. Principal, Chris Jack, acknowledged the founding parents who worked tirelessly to get the school up and running, and was delighted that some of these parents were present to see the fruits of their labour. A tour of the school followed by refreshments capped off a wonderful event. As the school is in a growth phase, Stage 2 of the Building Programme, including three more classrooms, is scheduled to commence in the coming months to be ready in 2020 when the school will offer Prep to Year 8.

Steiner Schools, also known as Waldorf Schools, celebrate 100 years in 2019 with over 1100 schools in approximately 65 countries. The first Steiner School in Australia was started in 1957 and today there are almost 50 schools across all States. Steiner Education provides a child centred, balanced curriculum developing the head, heart and hand.

You try to juggle your valuable products, fumbling through your bag for your credit card – but it isn’t there. If only you had a more compact, hands free device attached to you for you to pay. Luckily, wearable payment devices have evolved dramatically and are now taking over the world. Today, nearly all purchasing is done without cash. Currency has evolved to the point where people can now pay with just a touch. iPhone apps, watches, keys and even rings have been developed to make buying things easier for society. In Australia, 80% of face to face transactions are now contactless, and the number is only rising.

But why are they becoming so popular? What is it about contactless payment that makes it so appealing? Part of what makes these devices so functional is that they are compact, can easily go unnoticed, they are not battery operated

STEM is a method of learning and development which integrates the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths. As we live in a society which is technologically advancing by the minute, it is ideal that the youth participates in STEM-related subjects or commitments. STEM is an open career path which requires abundant skills that will fulfil the prerequisites of diverse occupations. We, as members of this progressing society, are exposed to STEM-related concepts in our everyday lives and STEM can set students up for prosperous futures. At a recent Moreton Bay STEM Fest, there was over one hundred participants from across the Moreton Bay region, however, this number can undoubtedly be increased. STEM has the aptitude to bridge ethnic and gender barriers which are evident in science and maths fields of study. Skills acquired by partaking in STEM can be applied to real world applications which can preserve the natural state of the environment which surrounds us. Currently, the change of weather patterns is being tackled by utilising STEMrelated skills. STEM education assists in organising efforts which educate the

everyday society of the importance of protecting the invaluable environmentespecially from pollution, global warming and other factors which contribute to the harm of our natural world. Marie Currie, a French-Polish physicist, once said: “Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” This notable quote can be applied in the instance of STEM education. STEM has the ability to modify society as we know it, as well as tackling environmental issues head-on and presenting new knowledge on eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

Occupations that require STEM-related skills are expanding due to technological developments; careers of the future all necessitate such abilities. These industries of the future are responsible for furthering innovation, creativity and design: all areas STEM education focusses on. According to the US Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are increasing at 9.8%. These professions are also higher paying than non-STEM occupations. The government is heavily involved in promoting and encouraging individuals to engage in these promising career paths; recent funding of 100 million dollars was proposed to support STEM fields of study. Everyone who is involved in STEM has the power to change the world for the better. STEM is the way of the future.

Without support and assistance, social isolation can impact on a person’s ability to participate in the community; it can contribute to or exacerbate depression, anxiety, loneliness and further impact people's lives leading to homelessness, suicidal ideation and substance abuse.

Some of you would have heard about Fishability QLD through the annual Bribie Island Boat Charters Challenge. This is a year-long program held at Bribie Island Boat Charters, in Spinnaker Sound Marina, at Sandstone Point. Qualified staff and volunteers venture out with participants into the Pumicestone Passage on wheelchair accessible BBQ boats, regularly, to compete in a fishing competition. The approved noise levels given by Moreton Bay Regional Council to Sandstone Point Hotel for its rock concerts are well outside the allowable limits and the noise being experienced by neighbours is completely unreasonable according to Ross Palmer. Mr Palmer is a very qualified and respected noise consultant. Palmer Acoustics was commissioned by the Pumicestone Area Noise Abatement Group inc, PANAG, to do independent sound monitoring during the concert on 25th May and to advise on the lawfully permitted noise levels for this location. Mr Palmer reported that the conditions imposed by Council did not comply with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Authority or the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation; and that the noise generated greatly exceeds all acceptable standards. Copies of the report have been given to every MBRC councillor, the CEO and the Planning Department. President of PANAG, Ken Park commented: “We have paid for this report ourselves and it should never have been needed if the council had managed the approval process a lot better and had managed the noise limits within state requirements. Council has

now agreed to accept and consider the report, which is an excellent start, and we hope that further discussions can be based on facts and in a spirit of cooperation, consultation and openness. Rather than go straight to the Planning and Environment Court with an appeal, at great expense to ratepayers, we are willing to talk this through with the council. The effected residents have shown themselves to be very reasonable people but we do insist that residents must be able to relax on weekends and to live in peace in their homes. It’s a basic human right, a basic democratic right.”

Extra time for a share in half million dollars to stop cyberbullying

“That’s why it is important for us to work together to raise awareness and learn new ways to support friends and family when we see cyberbullying occurring.”

Minister for Youth Di Farmer said grants between $500 and $1500 for young Queenslanders aged 10 – 17 years and grants of $1500 – $5000 for community organisations were available to develop bright initiatives to tackle cyberbullying.

“Kids can come up with a project on their own, or team up with friends as a group,” she said.

Applications for a share in $500,000 worth of grants to tackle cyberbullying have been extended to 21 July.

“While students may have found it difficult to find time during the school semester, this extension makes it that much easier for them to apply over the school holidays,” she said. “The grants are designed to support young people become part of the solution in calling out and rejecting abusive, hurtful or intimidating online behaviour.

“We know technology can be exploited to intentionally harm young people and it happens far too often. “There are many benefits for kids being online, but they’re not without risk.

Ms Farmer said there were many ways the grants could be used to promote positive messages through video, song, designing a game or staging targeted activities.

“Either way, it’s a creative and unique opportunity to develop ideas that we want to see grow into a statewide push for respectful and positive relationships.”

The grants program was one of the Palaszczuk Government’s responses to the AntiCyberbullying Taskforce Report released in October 2018.

Adding Some Landscape plant Warmth to July of the Month

I thought it would be great to warm the cockles of your hearts with some images of some beautiful winter blooming plants that are flowering locally around the place this month. The showstopper is- in my opinion, the orange trumpet vine Pyrostegia venusta, as I drove past this plant flowering in Bongaree. The orange trumpet vine looks rather inconspicuous most of the year until it bursts into flower in mid-winter putting on a spectacle with mases of orange tubular flowers. The orange trumpet vine is now actually considered a potential environmental weed in Queensland and New South Wales. Therefore, I am definitely not recommending propagating this plant for distribution but if kept in check and trained on a structure, what a magnificent sight to behold with fiery orange trumpet flowers on every inch of the vine. Also Images of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana and Metrosideros Collina ‘Little Dugald’, adding some colour, vibrancy and warmth to your winter’s day!

Aptenia cordifolia or the Baby Sun Rose

Aptenia cordifolia- is a hardy, fast-growing, evergreen succulent groundcover with glossy green, fleshy foliage. The Sun Rose is adorned with bright pink to purplish- daisy like flowers throughout most of the year which usually fully open in the hot midday sun. In the image supplied above, this fine example, has cascaded down a concrete retaining wall facing the western sun and is still flowering well in late autumn here on the coast. The Baby Sun Rose can spread to over 1.5 metres in diameter and is superb growing around rock walls, hanging baskets or used as an exceptional thick groundcover in that arid- hot part of the garden where not much else grows. Unfortunately Aptenia cordifolia, has the potential to be an environmental weed if let go unchecked and is already considered a weed in the southern states of Australia. The foliage and stems are soft and fleshy, and they are apparently edible with a nice salty taste and are mainly used in salads. The dainty- daisy like flowers do attract bees and butterflies and in the summer months flower so profusely that you can hear the bees hovering over the blooms. There is a variegated cultivar called Aptenia cordifolia ‘Variegata’. They look their best on rocky- retaining walls, vertical gardens and hanging baskets where they can be utilised for contrast with their attractive glossy green foliage.

It’s amazing this time of year; I tend to inspect my client’s lawns first before I attempt to pull the mower out of the truck and fire it up, as mostly, it’s about 9:30 am before the dew starts to dissipate lately in this colder weather. I usually choose not- to mow the grass, if it is under duress or too wet though. It is a business concern for us commercial gardeners and this time of year you have to decide to either forgo that regular scheduled mow to perhaps allow it to grow a bit more for next visit or cut it later in the day instead, but the beauty of the cooler months is the fact that the growth of plants and lawns has slowed sufficiently to gives us a chance to catch up on the things like; tool maintenance, sharpening the secateurs, chainsaw- chains and cleaning all the sap off the hand saws, sterilising, change the oil in the mower and filters etc. There is still so much to do really in the garden, like dead heading the spent blooms, controlling weeds, trimming citrus and turning over the compost and pulling the mulch away from the trunks of trees, but time is on our side as we can now plan to whittle away as much as we choose, rather than being a slave to our gardens in comparison to the hot and humid summer months we had to endure last summer.

So, on that next- fine, sunny winters day- when your home, whether it’s your weekend free- time or between school hours, it can be a time for contemplation if you choose? Or go to that long-awaited gardening event or perhaps just the chance to sit and relax and have your favourite beverage and ‘warm the bones’- in the morning sun and listen to the bird song or read that long awaited book. Its when things slow down naturally as the seasons change, I slow down too, and tend to feel a sense of overwhelming gratitude for my health, family, friends and the great relationships I have with the people I am involved with, my business ventures and my clients for their loyalty and I am ever so thankful that I am fortunate to be working in the outdoor environment and get to feel grounded on a daily basis, its where my soul feels right at home, as I tune in to nature, especially now that I can take a deep breath and smell the rosesso to speak, between the busyness of my day to day business concerns. So while I am feeling some serious gratitude, I would like to thank Belinda Ferguson, the owner/ editor of this fine- community newspaper and of course the team that work behind the scenes on the publication with their creative design and journalism and Damian Brown, for choosing to profile my wife and I, and our business, in his ongoing segment ‘Close Encounters’ a few issues ago and just as importantly, I would like to thank you guys- (The reader and audience) in the local community for your loyal support for reading our articles and supporting us on our journey to date! The Queensland Government is making $100,000 in grants available for fishing and community groups to run fishing clinics, conduct research, promote recreational fishing or improve fish habitats. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said Queenslanders were keen anglers and recreational fishing was an integral part of our lifestyle.

“Fishing is also very important for tourism and jobs, attracting fishers from around Australia and the world,” Mr Furner said. “The grants program aims to support activities and projects which enhance recreational fishing across the state. “Fisheries Queensland will assess the projects based on their benefit to recreational fishing, value for money and alignment with Queensland’s strategic recreational fishing priorities,” he said. Applications for the Queensland Recreational Fishing Grants Program are open to community-based not-forprofit organisations, fishing clubs and incorporated associations, schools and local councils. With typically beautiful June weather, this past month has had some very pleasant fishing days. Overnight temperatures averaged 12 degrees and daytimes were usually sunny and about 23 degrees. Not a lot of wind to cool things down either. Most days, light SW morning breezes gave way to light SE breezes after lunch. We did get some rain, which always helps to stir up the flathead, but most of it fell in one day, and that was a Monday, a long way out from the next weekend’s fishing.

That may explain why the flathead have been so quiet just lately. We need more of the REALLY cold mornings and maybe a bit more wind to stir things up. All of that clear water makes it too easy for the flathead to see what’s going on at the other end of the line. The rain before the last weekend of June has brought in some chilly air and should really make the difference with flathead fishing. July is often the month that the big flathead fishing takes off. As the weather cools further, larger flathead are going to be attracted to the mouths of the Pumicestone Passage creeks. Flathead are aggressive and usually attempt to eat anything that passes by. Casting and retrieving soft plastics and hard-bodied lures will all be successful in catching them. Make sure you use the tidal flow if you’re using bait – allow the boat to drift along the sandbanks.

If you’re shore-based, then cast out lures over the shallow flats, where the incoming tidal flow brings a food source to the fish. Look for signs of a weed-bed or the edge of the mangroves, to find the hungry fish. Bullock Creek, south of Donnybrook, has been already been giving up some nice flathead, especially with hard-bodied lures. Going after flathead, it’s always a good idea to add some strong leader to your line – they’re pretty good at biting through a regular line.

Gavin and his Dad took the boys fishing on a very wet day last week and it wasn’t all for nothing – they brought home a 50cm flathead, from near the Avon wreck, caught with a pilchard, on the mid-morning rising tide. So maybe the flathead weather has just started!

Winter whiting are another popular cool weather target. Both in the passage and on the ocean-side, winter whiting is a reliable catch at this time of year and is good fun for the kids. Banksia Beach foreshore has been holding good numbers. There are extensive yabby banks over there and the whiting come over them on the rising tide, looking for one of their favourite meals. Of course, if you get the chance at low tide, pumping some yabbies yourself will be a sure-fire way to hook a few whiting, if you cast out when the tide starts to run back in. Other baits that have been doing almost as well in the past couple of weeks are worms, prawns and squid. On the surf-side, the whiting have been a bit sporadic but Skirmish Point and Red Beach have been fishing well for tailor. The middle two weeks of July, with the smaller tides, should be a good time to try for tailor. It might be chilly but early mornings are the best time to fish for tailor and the second and fourth

It’s hard to find a gutter there but look for an eddy and cast so the line swings over to the edge of it. Pilchards have been working well for bait, but garfish hold better on the hooks and are usually just as tasty to the tailor. Bream have been scarce but there is reason for that – the bigger bream are gathering and getting ready to spawn, so their minds are on other things. The best place to find them is in deep holes, using a bit of weight and probably a good lure. Movement is what will draw out a bream at this time of year. North of Donnybrook, at the mouth of Glasshouse Creek, is one nice deep hole which has been hiding a few bream of late.

Higher Taxes Our Schools The Pumicestone Electorate has proud school communities with highly dedicated teachers and Principals and outstanding P&Cs. It was great to see some funding was made available in the Budget for a few of our schools:  Bribie Island State High School - $2.4 million to complete additional classrooms already under construction.  Banksia Beach State School - $615,000 for a new car park (and not before time!)  Pumicestone State School - $2.5 million for additional classrooms It was greatly disappointing to see that the State Government won’t commit to the LNP’s promise to aircondition every state school in Queensland. Their commitment doesn’t go far enough and the base line should be if it’s good enough for some it’s good enough for all. A future LNP Government will get the settings right for better learning outcomes by air-conditioning every state school in Queensland – that’s our commitment and that’s what will happen right here for schools in the Pumicestone Electorate.

Our State Roads Governments are elected to act on behalf of constituents and by virtue take responsibility to provide the road infrastructure needed to support local economic activity and growth. Without such activity and growth businesses close their doors, the spinifex starts to cluster and before too long what once thrived stagnates. There are two major connecting roads in the Pumicestone Electorate in need of vital upgrades – Bribie Island Road and Beachmere Road. Both of these roads support our local economy. They get us to and from work, deliver goods to local businesses, bring visitors to spend here and service the broader community’s needs and access. Both of these major roads have been ignored in this year’s State Budget. There is zero funding allocated to upgrade Beachmere Road - disappointing is an understatement! Since day one in the job I’ve been going hard on lobbying the State Government to put some dollars into improving a stretch along Beachmere Road that is highly dangerous and quite frankly poses a risk to every motorist. I am continually told by the Minister for Transport and Main Roads and even by the

 More than $3.45 billion in extra taxes and charges on Queenslanders in just two Budgets.  This Budget alone rips $1.25 billion out of the Queensland economy through new taxes and tax hikes over the next four years.

State Debt

 Debt soaring to a staggering $90 Billion.  This is a burden of $16,795 for every man, woman and child in Queensland.

State Infrastructure

 $500 million reduction in infrastructure spending in 2019/20 compared to previous forecasts.  Queensland has the lowest infrastructure investment as a percentage of revenue in the nation.

Premier that this road is not a priority for them. They’ve made that clear once more in the budget. Some locals have expressed to me that Bribie Island Road is ok as it is and don’t want it to change. The majority however see upgrading this road as a key catalyst to our economic prosperity. Without an improved road that provides a dual carriage way from Caboolture to Bribie, without a new bridge to better service our needs, our local economy will pay the price. That’s the cold hard fact. It is not good enough to push this important issue into the long grass any more. In this year’s State Budget there has been NO new state funding towards upgrading Bribie Island Road and zero dollars to progress the planning for a new Bribie Island Bridge. Previously allocated funds will result (eventually) in lights being installed at the dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection and I’m told these works will commence in the second half of this year. I’ll be making sure that happens. But what makes matters worse is whilst the State Government has finally acknowledged the $20 million of Federal funding for Bribie Island Road upgrades that was

announced last year, the Palaszczuk Government has decided to quarantine these funds until 2020-2021. The $20 million now sits as a line item in a document called QTRIP (Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program) with no plan attached advising us how it will be spent to improve safety and get people home sooner. The only description given to how these funds will be used is “minor upgrades”. What, Where, When is left in the dark! The manner in which the Palaszczuk Government has handled the $20 million in federal funding (the only new money to make its way onto Bribie Island Road mind you) has been a classic case of a Labor Government putting politics ahead of the public interest. They are using these available funds to suit the results they want, which I suspect is to sit on the money until closer to the next State Election before making it available. I can’t imagine anyone in the Pumicestone Electorate who would think this is ok. The benefits of these two road upgrades is being diminished by either political motive or lack of interest and it’s clear from the 2019-20 State Budget papers that investment in our State Controlled Road Network has once again failed us.
