It’s funny when an election is on people stop spending which results in small businesses struggling. I think we all felt the effect on us over the last few months. In this issue we say goodbye to a beautiful soul Ambrose BinJuda one of our own also Vale Bob Hawke. With the pain of losing someone you love so much; it also brings financial burden to his young wife Gabrielle and son Jeremiah.

The family have a fundraiser on facebook called Ambrose BinJuda Family Fundraiser to help Gabrielle and her son get through this very shocking sad time of losing a husband and father at such a young age. Their aim is to reach $100.000 and in just one week they have raised a whopping $54,000. The Team at the LOCAL News is asking people to go to the fundraiser page on Facebook and donate what ever amount big or small to support our own. Words cannot explain how Ambrose was loved in our community. He was a beautiful soul and worked very hard to support his family and wanted his wife and son to have the very best of everything. Ambrose was the sole provider for his family. Come on Bribie lets support our own who has been struck down by a very sudden death and help out! Vale Ambrose BinJuda.

Last week Bribie Island said a heartfelt goodbye to one of Bribie Islands young father Ambrose BinJuda, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. There was 600 seats plus standing room last Friday for his funeral. It was packed with half of Bribie Island community there to pay their respects.

Ambrose & Gabrielle have been going out with each other since they were 15 years old and have a beautiful baby boy Jeremiah. Ambrose was well known and loved by most of Bribie Island. Their

In April this year bird deterrents were installed on the Bribie Island Bridge, as of the writing of this article the deterrents remain in place and an alternative roost option has not been installed. The loss of the pelicans roosting on the lamp posts has been felt across the Bribie Community, with 1,000 people marching across the bridge in protest and 2,000 people contributing signatures to state member Simone Wilson MP’s petition to return the pelican’s roosts. Bribie Island Bridge’s roosting pelicans are considered by many to be the island’s mascot and hold a special place in the heart of the community. But as of yet, no solution has been settled on for the return of the pelicans to the bridge. Simone Wilson MP has continuously been fighting for the return of the pelicans, participating in the march across the bridge and keeping residents updated via her Facebook page. “Most members of the community have a personal connection to the pelicans as do I. As a long-time local, my children learnt how to count from a young age thanks to the pelicans as we crossed the bridge. It’s a counting game I know a lot of parents use with their kids and I cannot think of a more delightful way to learn this skill. I have been approached by people in the UK and even those holidaying in Thailand about the importance of our pelican mascots to our community.” Simone Wilson MP said on her connection to the pelicans. When asked to comment on the current situation Simone Wilson MP said “My

community is still waiting for the Government to act on its promise to install alternative roosting perches for the pelicans. This entire debacle has taken far too long to rectify and has been to the detriment of the pelicans who have roosted safely on the Bridge for decades. It’s disappointing that despite 1,000 people marching across the bridge in protest and 2,000 odd signatures on a petition to return the pelican’s roosts, and despite my continued representations, Minister Mark Bailey has not once bothered to pick up the phone to inform me on what he intends to do.” Following up with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), their Spokesperson has said the following on the current situation “We understand the Bribie Island community cares about the pelicans and we are investigating alternative options for pelicans to roost on Bribie Island Bridge. The investigation is considering environmental and road safety factors, as well as potential costs… The investigation was expected to be completed by the end of May (2019).” What has taken most of the community by shock is that these deterrents seemed to be installed overnight and there was no consultation with the local community. On this matter, the TMR Spokesperson said “We upgraded the lighting to LED to significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce electricity

consumption. The switch to more efficient lighting will improve visibility on the road, reduce light pollution and costs as well as make savings on electricity consumption. Part of the upgrade involved installing bars to prevent the pelicans from sitting atop the lights. Pelican waste dropping onto the lights can cause the lights to fail, requiring more frequent maintenance, including higher costs and having to close lanes to replace damaged lights more often. Lighting replacement is part of routine operations, for which community engagement is not undertaken.” Hopefully with the TMR investigation finishing it will not take much longer for a suitable roosting option to be installed and the pelicans to return. For the Moreton Bay Region, this isn’t the first time bird deterrents have upset pelican roosting habits. Redcliffe’s Woody Point Jetty had deterrents installed in 2014 much to the local community’s chagrin and certain light poles on the Hornibrook Bridge also had deterrents installed—though notably not all the light poles so pelicans were still able to roost along parts of the bridge. Moreton Bay Council declined to comment on the situation at this current stage, as it is a matter for TMR. The Local Island and Surrounds News will continue to follow up on the pelicans; we will have another update next issue.

The focus on health and fitness over the past 5-10 years has led to an increase in the development of healthy lifestyle programs; the promotion of eating better and exercising regularly. The community health focus has also led to an increase in the number of Fitness Centres which are more focussed on the broader needs these days rather than a traditional goals of a stereotypical GymJunkie.

I was even more impressed by the professional and friendly approach from the team. I was recently invited to take a tour of a new community Fitness Centre, PLUS Fitness 24/7 located at Sandstone Lakes (Ningi). Wow – I was impressed. I was even more impressed by the professional and friendly approach from the team. Now let’s be honest, most of us would like to be more active and perhaps even visit a local Fitness Centre – maybe just to take a tour, however there is something slightly intimidating about taking that next step – calling up and walking in the door. Don’t worry, I am completely with you, however I hope that some of our readers will take the plunge and pay a visit to the new ‘kid on the block’ at Plus Fitness 24/7. I sat down with the ‘soon to be’ new Centre Manager, Kylie Cant who was accompanied by the regional Fitness Plus Manager, Josie Roberston to talk about Plus Fitness. Firstly, I will say that these two women are delightful human beings – educated, passionate, caring, community and family focussed and very welcoming. Our environment is taken for granted. It’s a luxury that we have become so accustomed to that we do not realise how much we have abused it. The destruction of our Earth has progressed so much that we hide behind our blissful ignorance, but the issue continues to grow. However, through such devastation, it has brought with it an awareness- with people, and society, beginning to recognise the severity of the problem at hand. Movements have occurred worldwide, a modern revolution. Artists, scholars, workers and students all calling for a muchneeded change. Marches are frequent, protests often and social media platforms have become a vital role in raising awareness and informing the younger population. On the 5th of June, raising awareness is taken to a new level with World Environment Day. This day encourages us, as a collective whole, to band together and consciously make an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Just recently, in Melbourne, hundreds of

locals gathered in the Central Business District to further protest climate change. The protesters laid down in silence, just one of many events that has happened not only in Australia but also the world. Although these acts of protest have caused some progression and awareness, there is still much that can be done. Simple acts can be carried out everyday in order to reduce your individual impact on the environment. Carpooling or taking public transport reduces car bon emissions and petrol used per trip. Investing in reusable shopping bags and containers ensures that you do not resort to using unsustainable plastics and cling wrap. Replacing plastic straws and cutlery with reusable alternatives such as metal straws or bamboo utensils further limits plastic use, as does reusable water bottles. Composting and recycling reduces the waste thrown out, turning off lights and preserving water overall creates a more sustainable household. It may not seem like much but a combined effort to change the way in which we live and the impact we have as individuals can have positive changes towards the environment. It is not only the United Nations calling for action but millions of people across the world whom this disaster impacts. We fight for the change we wish to see in the world, in this case on World Environment Day, 2019, we fight for a sustainable future. A future that in twenty years we can look back on and proudly say I was a part of that change. This topic is no longer an issue that can be swept under the rug, ignored in hopes that it will disappear. It is time for action, the change that is so desperately required.

Beachmere Joins in State Conference

The newest U3A in Queensland, Beachmere U3A now has over 230 members and twenty classes and workshops each term.

Chair of Beachmere U3A, Mary Brown, said her recently elected Committee was working hard towards an increased awareness of U3A in the local community.

Photo Supplied - Beachmere Butchery owners Andrew and Fiona Vegans may have taken over the news headlines lately, but it is the traditional butcher that is a family favourite in most households. Beachmere Butchery owners Andrew and Fiona represented Beachmere in the finals at the “Butcher Wars” in Sydney recently. Open to the public over a weekend, and as part of the Meatstock BBQ festival and the Low & Slow Cooking Show, each contestant had to break down a side of lamb and a pig in 30 minutes. Andrew cut and dressed the meat, displayed and presented for sale as part of the challenge and was invited back to enter the State against State competition later in the year which will raise funds for charity.

Andrew and Fiona said the event, which a lot of locals followed on facebook over

“We shared our own knowledge too, with the growing demand for prepared meals. Our range includes Madras Goat Curry, Chicken Carbonara and the ever popular Curried Sausages – especially when we make our own popular range of sausages,” Andrew said.

Asking questions is essential for growth on a personal and professional level. If you are in business asking the right questions will help you unlock the secret of transferring information into results. Results that will empower and inform your business decisions. Asking and answering questions provides clarity. The kind of clarity that allows you to make informed decisions based on solid information. Yet many adults are often reluctant to ask questions for fear they will be seen as lacking. This is definitely not a good thing!

Looking from a kids perspective Kids ask questions. All the time. Constantly. If you're a parent you'll be very familiar with every question you answer being followed by another – often just the one word “Why?” You know how it goes, you give the answer and back they come with another...Why? Kids are persistent and relentless. They keep asking questions until they are satisfied. Many a parent has been known to say "Because I said so" in sheer frustration. Or make up some nonsensical answer remember the ad about the Great Wall of China being built to keep the rabbits out?

Children have an inbuilt thirst for knowledge and soak it all up like a sponge. Happily asking away without any sense of self-consciousness. It would never occur to them not to ask!

It's only when growing older - often in teenage years - that a sense of "feeling silly", "people will think I'm stupid" mentality starts to creep in.

When the Questions Stop This is not a good thing! Some might go off and Google answers (not guaranteed to be correct!) while others may just never bother finding out. Similarly, at college, university or even doing a business course update many participants are reluctant to draw attention to themselves by asking questions. The fear of being judged or seen as lacking is very real. Fear of being seen as wanting to know too much is a very real anxiety. If this is resonating, rest assured you are not alone. The way to overcome this is to remember...

Questions = Growth Here's the thing, if you don't know something then you need to ASK! Asking the right questions will help you grow on both a personal and professional level. If you are a business your information and pictures to create a fake identity or to target you with a scam.

Beware of unusual payment methods. Scammers often ask for payment by wire transfers, preloaded cards and even iTunes cards and Bitcoin. These are nearly always a sign that it is part of a scam. Little Black Book of Scams

The golden rules to protect yourself Be alert to the fact that scams exist. When dealing with uninvited contacts from people or businesses, whether it’s over the phone, by mail, email, in person or on a social networking site, always consider the possibility that the approach may be a scam. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Know who you’re dealing with. If you’ve only ever met someone online or are unsure of the legitimacy of a business, take some time to do a bit more research. Do a Google image search on photos or search the internet for others who may have had dealings with them. Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows or emails—delete them. If unsure, verify the identity of the contact through an independent source such as a phone book or online search. Don’t use the contact details provided in the message sent to you. Keep your personal details secure. Put a lock on your mailbox and shred your bills and other important documents before throwing them out. Keep your passwords and pin numbers in a safe place. Be very careful about how much personal information you share on social media sites. Scammers can use

Keep your mobile devices and computers secure. Always use password protection, don’t share access with others (including remotely), update security software and back up content. Protect your WiFi network with a password and avoid using public computers or WiFi hotspots to access online banking or provide personal information. Choose your passwords carefully. Choose passwords that would be difficult for others to guess and update them regularly. A strong password should include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Don’t use the same password for every account/profile, and don’t share your passwords with anyone. Beware of any requests for your details or money. Never send money or give credit card numbers, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you don’t know or trust. Don’t agree to transfer money or goods for someone else: money laundering is a criminal offence. Be careful when shopping online. Beware of offers that seem too good to be true, and always use an online shopping service that you know and trust. Think twice before using virtual currencies (like Bitcoin)—they do not have the same protections as other transaction methods, which means you can’t get your money back once you send it. Sure, the answers you get may lead to the need for further clarity, hence more questions will follow but you know what? Never be afraid to ask. Asking for information to allow you to make informed decisions is all about taking responsibility for your own growth.

Legal Obligations Sometimes, you also need to ask questions to satisfy your legal responsibilities. This is especially important for company directors and office holders. During my career in the Not for Profit sector, it has shocked me, on more than one occasion, to find that many board members simply went along with whatever the CEO of the day had said. It became, and continues to be, my number one priority to make sure members of every board that I work with or consult to understand that they bear the ultimate legal responsibility for any decisions made.

Making the ask Regardless of what business you're in - make sure you are clear on what is happening and why it is happening.

If you're not sure or are uncomfortable about something - ask questions to help you feel comfortable. You need to be secure in the knowledge that you are making the right decision based on the information available. Connect with that inner curious child, and ask...

Why? Why? Why? There's no such thing as a stupid question. Remember that everyone is on a different journey. Do not compare yourself to others, instead focus on what you are doing. Test the waters, track interests, make changes and adjust your business based on the answers to the questions you are asking or being asked. Until next issue….

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence on Bribie By Joanne Allison-Schouw

With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can take steps towards learning daily living skills and gaining independence. The process may be a gradual one, and may require effort, time and energy, but age is certainly no barrier to learning.

Health and Wellbeing is run by highly skilled staff and volunteers for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. We offer practical assistance in developing self-care skills such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning and household skills such as cleaning and laundry, social skills, practical math’s and money management, travel training and road safety, and dance, drama and sports for confidence and coordination enhancement. By learning to be more independent, young adults with a disability gain a greater ability to speak up for themselves and choose the life they want. They may even increase their capacity to settle into a home and life of their own. In our experience every step they take to physical, emotional and social independence is beneficial both for them as individuals and for the community.

Starting slowly and proceeding step by step is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disabilities can be encouraged to choose their own friends because the process of doing so supports their personal development and helps them get more involved with the community. That is where services like Bribie Respite & Support Services come in. We aim to create a safe and secure environment through which young adults with disabilities are able to develop everyday skills and form new friendships, gradually becoming more independent and confident along the way. Bribie Respite and Support Services has resumed management of the Senior Citizens Hall on its site, a building it has owned for 30 years.

Bribie Respite and Support Services has trusteeship of the land on which it sits at 96-108 Arcadia Avenue, Woorim, from the QLD State Government but it owns all the buildings on that land. For a few years the Senior Citizens Hall and its activities have been managed by the Bribie District All Age Social Activities Centre Inc (BAC). BAC has facilitated a variety of activities from the hall, including carpet bowls, dancing, table tennis and Voices choral group. Those activities will be continued under BRASS’ management, with no immediate interruption to the schedule. As part of its new management BRASS will refurbish the hall, which is in a state of some disrepair, and install air conditioning so that users will have a safe, clean and pleasant environment in which to pursue their leisure activities.

The site at Arcadia Avenue is a hub for important community services on Bribie Island. Bribie Respite and Support Services runs a Learning Centre for young people with a disability as well as day respite services for older people and people with dementia. Bribie Meals on Wheels also operates from the site and sits alongside the Senior Citizens Hall with its full program of leisure activities.

Bribie Respite and Support Services is deeply embedded in the community and has a long history of caring for older and disabled people on Bribie Island. It is dedicated to providing the best in respite services within a warm, communityfocused setting.

I bet by now you have already heard the “must eat stodgy food” message from your body. Unfortunately it’s a biological fact and it doesn’t matter where you live, Bribie Island or Outer Mongolia, your body is going to want you prepared for that blizzard that will stop you hunting down a 5mtr tall hairy toed marsupial to fricassee into a fat filled fry-up just like your ancestors did. Of course on Bribie we don’t have blizzards or gigantic hairy toed marsupials, although there was this bloke at the mall the other day that closely resembled a hairy toed marsupial…. Anyway, even though the morning crowd during an Aldi sale does bring out the caveman in some, we don’t need to hunt

for our food and we definitely don’t need to store extra fat to survive our Bribie blizzardless winter. Modern Bribieites are now spoilt with food that’s pre-hunted and arrives wrapped in cardboard and plastic with all man eating ingredients already removed. Of course you could spend this winter breaking the boredom by sitting and lecturing your belly button for hours on end about how you won’t starve, but alas your body won’t believe you, it will still do its utmost to hold onto bodyfat and even gain some more just in case! No, if you want to beat the 2kg gain that you will get over winter, (sorry, it is scientifically proven that in winter we do gain approximately 2kg per person) you are going to have to be smarter than your belly button! So it’s June and along come those dark months, where we feel sadder and slower than normal. Those months when we pile clothes over our bodies and become large blob like objects without shape or form. We all look soft, squishy, puffy and padded in places where we definitely shouldn’t look squishy and padded. We wear layers to keep us warm and eat heavy meals when we should be moving to create our own heat and to burn those excess stodgy food calories that we suddenly crave to “comfort” us. Then top it off we hibernate from the imaginary Bribie blizzards. But how comfortable are you going to feel when you peel away the padding in spring and discover that those enormous squishy bits weren’t your clothes! Suddenly you are struggling to pull on a singlet and looking in the mirror at your own soft, squishy and padded body, which is now an unflattering transparent splotchy white from being kept under cover. Wow, I bet you can’t wait to see that in your

Senior Gentle Exercises Towel Time Before You Start go and Grab A Small Towel!

Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure..

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only complete as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

TOWEL TANGO

Standing tall, with your shoulders back, stretch the towel horizontally with your hands grabbing both ends and hold the towel close to your chest front of your chest. Step forward with your right leg and bend at the knee. Straighten the other leg. Push your arms and the towel forward at the same time. Step back to the starting position and repeat with the other leg. Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg. Rest

TOWEL TWIRLS

Stand in a place where you have plenty of room around you. Hold one end of the small towel with your right hand and keeping your arm straight make circular movements as fast as you comfortably can with your right arm, twirl the towel clockwise Repeat with your left hand. Then taking the towel in your right hand again twirl the towel counter clockwise. Repeat with your left hand. Only do as many as is comfortable for you up to 10 times with each arm. Rest.

TOWEL TOE TAPS

If you are feel unstable when standing on one foot please stand next to the kitchen bench or a stable chair for support if needed. Stand tall with your shoulders back and your feet shoulder width apart. Hold the towel with both hands and stretch your arms straight in front at shoulder height. Holding the upper corners of the towel lift your right foot to touch the lower part of the towel or as close to the corner as you can comfortably reach. Return to starting position and repeat with your left foot. Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg. Rest

Sitting or standing Stand or sit face to face with a friend or partner. Tie a knot in the middle of the towel. Gently throw the towel to each other. Begin with a short throwing distance and then slowly move further apart. Aren’t our bodies amazing? If faced with danger we have the ability to cope, our body equips us with everything we need and responds innately to the messages we send it. Our adrenal glands are located on the top of each kidney and, as well as other life sustaining functions, they produce cortisol and adrenaline in response to stress. Your resilience, energy and endurance depend on their correct functioning, and they play a very important role in how you think and feel. These respond when we percieve danger, and illicit a response from every cell in our body. Adrenaline is the acute stress hormone. Initially induced from a threat of life or death situation to initiate the flight or fight response eg. an encounter with a tiger; your adrenaline will either enable you to stay and fight the tiger, or to ‘take flight’ and flee from the tiger. In modern times pressure from every day stressors increase adrenaline production: to do lists, an overflowing email inbox, running late for work, hectic traffic, caffeine intake. When you produce adrenaline biochemical changes are made in order to protect you to keep you safe. It increases your blood pressure; decreases blood supply to the digestive system and diverts it away to the periphery, to the arms and legs- to prepare you to run away from danger. Adrenaline responds accordingly to “your life is in danger”. Cortisol responds accordingly to “there is no food left in the world”.

Cortisol is the chronic stress hormone produced initially in times of floods, famine, wars. It slows down our metabolism to conserve food supply as a survival mechanism. In doing so it increases fat levels, providing protection during famine. In modern times it’s generated in response to relationships, finances, health. The way we handle stress is all about perception. Our beliefs drive our behavior. You absorb your beliefs from your perceptions. From a young age we stop hearing what people say and replace with we think they mean. We often think ‘Is there a risk that I’m being seen in a way that I don’t want to be seen?’ Another key function of the adrenal glands, along with the ovaries and body fat is to produce hormones such as oestrogen; and progesterone. When your adrenals are too busy responding to stress, they cannot produce oestrogen, therefore the fat has to take over, thus producing more body fat. This is common in menopause and also associated with imbalances in oestrogen. When your adrenals can’t produce sufficient progesterone due to it responding to stress, symptoms can arise such as low mood, anxiety, fluid retention. Progesterone is essential for fertility so in a constantly stressed state, progesterone is in poor supply, therefore reduces fertility. So ‘being stressed’ has a flow on effect for so many areas of the body: making us overweight, reducing our ability to cope with stress, increasing our blood pressure, reducing our fertility, low mood, anxiety, poor digestive function,etc. These effects are all due to the self preservation effects of the messages sent via the pituitary gland to the adrenal glands in an effect to protect

the body from perceived danger. The body responds to real danger the same way as perceived danger. Is having too many emails in your inbox, real danger? Is not allowing yourself enough time to make the kids lunches in the morning real danger? It isn’t, and yet the body is responding to your stress signals by producing adrenaline and cortisol in its amazing ability to keep us safe. So maybe we need to be careful about the messages we are sending our body and making sure it’s not responding to a perceived threat that isn’t really a threat. Let’s try flipping around some of our thought patterns, changing our internal dialogue from “I have to” to “I get to”, and reconnecting to the privilege and beauty of the situation. It gets back to looking at the positives and being grateful. A simple exercise to reduce stress hormones is diaphragmatic breathing. This shows the body it’s safe. We wouldn’t be able to do it if we were in a dangerous situation. There are also many herbs that can help support our adrenal gland function. Changing our attitude can have a tremendous effect on managing our stress, and our adrenal function can be improved by trying to focus on enjoyment, positive attitudes, lowering stress, healthy relationships, getting adequate sleep, managing finances, exercising and adequate nutrition. Grants aim for truth, healing and reconciliation Organisations are being encouraged to apply for up to $10,000 in grants as part of the Queensland Government’s Truth, Healing and Reconciliation grants program. Minister for Child Safety Di Farmer said the grants were released on 31 May to mark the 20th anniversary of the Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Children in Queensland Institutions (the Forde Inquiry) during an event held at the Gallery of Modern Art in South Brisbane. “This grants program is part of the government’s implementation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse,” she said. “The Royal Commission exposed the truth of what happened to too many children, and importantly, the profound impact it has had on victims and survivors. “These grants are one way we are helping to support victims and survivors to heal. The Royal Commission was a start point, not an end point – there is still more to do.” Ms Farmer said the grants program was about recognising the profound harm caused by institutional abuse and continuing the conversation across Queensland communities. “We’re looking for applications from individuals and organisations for projects which will help bring about truth, healing, or reconciliation. “Grants could be given for any number of things – perhaps creating some kind of memorial to honour victims, or setting up a group for survivors to support each other. “Perhaps it’s undertaking a research project, or creating some kind of art, or holding an event with a guest speaker to raise awareness at your local school. “We’ve deliberately made the grants program broad so that we can consider as many kinds of applications as possible. “What is absolutely crucial though is that they must be centred around victims and survivors. “We want to provide opportunities for meaningful connections with people with lived experience of institutional child abuse and to promote cultural change in how we respond to survivors and protect children today.” Chair of the Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Taskforce Bob Atkinson AO APM welcomed the grants, and said the initiative would help keep important conversations happening throughout the community. “At the conclusion of the five year Royal Commission in December 2017, an important aspect was that the momentum that had been established in terms of the safety and protection of children must be maintained,” he said. “The establishment of the Taskforce and today’s announcement of the grants programme are important, valuable and practical initiatives in terms of maintaining that momentum.” Ms Farmer said funding was available for activities between September and December 2019 that partnered with people with a lived experience and recognise truth, healing and reconciliation as an ongoing process. “Activities must also raise awareness of institutional child abuse and its impact. “Victims and survivors live with the impacts of what happened to them for their entire lives. “We have to keep this conversation going, and we have to keep finding ways we can support victims and survivors and help them find the truth, justice and reconciliation they need to rebuild their lives.” Grants of up to $10,000 are available for individual organisations, and funds of up to $15,000 are available for joint applications.

Malolo Lai Lai – A glittering light in a blue ocean, and the original home of a Sea Captain…Captain Josaia Mar of Fiji. By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings.

A couple of times in your life, if you are lucky, you experience just what the world has to offer by way of natural beauty and connect with the humans who live upon and manage such a splendid stage. Recently I travelled to Fiji for some maritime adventures on a rather lovely vessel, a Princess 54, belonging to a member of my family. The vessel’s home port is a marina close to Nadi International Airport, where she lives alongside various other splendid vessels. The reasons for the adventure was to spend some time with our family, to

He spent his young life in and around Malolo and Malolo Lai Lai [ Little Malolo ] and holds some wonderful tales about the development of a resort which has sprung from his ancestral home. I was captivated by the story of the ‘native carpet grass ‘ which grows, like a carpet, around the resort of Lomani. It seems as if this place, Lomani, was bereft of any ground covering grass as the resort was nearing completion. An empty beer carton, carried by his father, containing wads of carpet grass from around Nadi Airport, appeared on an inter-island boat at the port of Malolo Lai Lai. Thus

One of the beautiful resorts on the island experience the warmth and friendly nature of the Fijian people and to escape the media dust storm of the Federal Election for a few days. Most of our days were spent on the crystal waters of the Mamanuca Group of islands, about 20 nautical miles West of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. On two or three occasions, we ventured out into the Pacific via the famous surf contest site – Cloud Break. The transition from the closed waters of the Mamanuca Group to the Pacific Ocean is not dramatic ; one moment are you in relatively calm waters and the next you can feel a primal surge through the vessel as the Pacific takes hold and tells you that you are now in the arms of giant who can play with you at will. The Skipper of our vessel is a Fijian Sea Captain called Josaia Mar, his nickname is “ Dodo “, and he is greeted throughout the closed waters we travelled by delighted and friendly yells from young boys and girls from the villages – “ Bula Dodo “. He was well known and respected. He is also bloody good at moving vessels over water and into and out of tricky

I navigated, fruitlessly from the flybridge, worrying about the Pacific swells, hidden reefs, tidal surges etc., and, of course, our perspective Skipper picked up on that, asking, “ Is there anything you can do

the grass spread; the lush green carpet seen by International Tourists today was not the result of hours of painstaking landscaping, simply the result of some lateral thinking about the use of empty beer cartons. I could tell, by looking at these waters through my Ray Bans, that there were various subtle shades of blue and green, indicating the presence of reefs, rocks and sand bars/banks which would be exposed as the tide rose and fell. These banks and reefs provided splendid lunch places where we could anchor and swim about looking for underwater adventures. His detailed local knowledge allowed our Skipper to pick his way delicately through these coloured patches, always arriving, without fuss, at the right place on time. A couple of times another boat of tourists was already in the location, a couple of quick mobile phone calls in the Fijian language sorted out the problem; it was obvious that many of the local charter skippers deferred to ‘ Dodo ‘ as the master of these waters. Not because he was overbearing and arrogant, but simply he was one of them and they knew and respected his ability and reputation. In these times, in the world in which I reside, simple human respect for skills and human decency are hard to come by and seeing this occurring in the waters off Fiji affected me deeply and moved me to write this small story about an impressive man of his people. I have always been proud of my sea legs, having run and skippered dive boats in the Arafura Sea of Australia’s North Shore, a shallow choppy fetch of water, quickly blown into spiky peaks by the Trade winds off the Indian Ocean. I

made serene passage over these waters, many times in rough weather, never feeling the effects of sea sickness or the ‘ travel wobbles ‘ – my wife, however, admitted to hopeless sea legs and was apprehensive about spending several days on a vessel in tropical waters. Oh ! how cruel can fate be ?? Day One of the maritime adventure took us on an eight hours cruise around some far-flung islands, nice places for lunch but a bloody long way back when the day was nearly done. Heading the vessel for our home port, Dodo indicated, quietly, as he always did, that things might get a bit ‘ bumpy ‘ on the return journey – due to a sudden and sharp rise in the wind coming from the South East. The fabled trade winds; winds which blew the British trade ships and the British Men of War into and out of the Pacific over the last hundred years. “ Trade winds “, I thought, “ Pfft, so what? “ I suddenly found out “ So what.” Much to my pop-eyed horror I shortly found myself with my face in a fire bucket as the vessel bounced and reared her way across these calm tropical waters – it was a bit bloody ‘ bumpy ‘. To add to the horror, my wife, admitting sea sickness and waiting for the inevitable, sailed calmly on, enjoying the ride and the spray, the jolting and the lurching in these cheeky and lumpy waters. Dignity returned fairly quickly, I managed to impress Dodo later after we moored as I consumed a Corona – I actually don’t remember the Corona – I presumed it stayed down !! What I do remember about the episode was the incredible skill of the Skipper as we entered the Musket Cove Marina, night black as a dog’s guts, the wind pushing the vessel sideways, another vessel in our mooring space all apparently combining to make our day even more ‘ bumpy ‘ But no. Dodo had calm control over this large vessel, she moved sideways, aft and forwards at his light touch and sidled up to the marina just like a calf moves alongside its mother. It is true that completing hard tasks quickly and easily, without too much bother, is the mark of an expert. On this occasion, it was obvious that an expert was on the bridge, broad smile in the night, a calm re-assuring word and it was time we all had a pizza ! Captain Josaia Mar is not the only Sea Captain in Fiji, there are others, many know him as we witnessed their welcoming acknowledgements as we made passage throughout these waters. What was special about him was his humanity, his concern for the young men and women of his island home, his calm observations of the word as he saw it – the presence of the Chinese in Fiji and other matters – brought attention to a dilemma which affects all of us

who live around the Pacific. Empirical ambitions and the ever diminishing resources we have at our disposal. Fiji, Captain Mar and the people of Fiji, are our neighbours in the Pacific, that Ocean touches our shores as well; we have a common heritage, being members of the Commonwealth of Nations. I reckon I was lucky to meet one of our neighbours. A reminder of good men and women in the world; where ever we go!

Parents of toddler beaten to death fight to keep their child’s killer behind bars Says Shadow AttorneyGeneral David Janetzki

Ireland drunkenly beat Hemi over several hours, leaving him with more than 78 bruises and a severed brain stem when he jerked the boys’ legs out from under him, causing the toddler’s head to smash on the bathtub.

LNP Shadow Attorney-General David Janetzki is horrified the man who fatally bashed toddler Hemi Goodwin-Burke could soon walk free, after serving just four years in jail.

“We pushed the Labor government, spoke to the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council and their report found child manslaughter sentences were too light, so at the very least he should spend his entire sentence in jail,” Mr Burke said.

Matthew James Ireland applied for parole last Friday, after he was sentenced in 2017 to eight-and-ahalf years imprisonment for Hemi’s manslaughter in 2015. Mr Janetzki said he cannot imagine the nightmare Hemi’s parents are experiencing.

“Their child’s life was worth more than four years imprisonment,” Mr Janetzki said. “Unfortunately, evil cowards who commit these heinous crimes against our precious children will not be punished as the community demands.

“The LNP’s new child killer laws which were rejected by the Palaszczuk Labor Government earlier this month, would have seen real justice for victims and devastated families.

“The LNP’s laws would have introduced a new offence of child homicide with a mandatory 15 years jail.”

He had been babysitting the 18-monthold boy in March 2015 at Moranbah.

Hemi’s parents Shane Burke and KerriAnn Goodwin will make a submission to the Parole Board to try and keep Ireland in jail. Mr Burke said they would try to make their submission to the parole board face-to-face, rather than writing a letter.

“Four years is just so insulting. Hemi’s life was worth more than that. Cranky Lizard Speaks June 2019

Hello, it is a nice feeling to be back in Queensland after a couple of months away in other States.

Add to that, the polls, a beast which is fast losing its credibility, suggested that the Government could not win the election. Quite obviously, this led to increasing and overbearing confidence in the ranks of the Opposition. And probably contributed to the careless arrogance with which they portrayed their

An Editor of The Australian described the election result as an expression of the genius of Australian democracy. Apart from a few greens, some limp lettuce leaves in Melbourne, a grab bag full of left wing journalists and a coterie of blimpish activists, who could disagree with that ? As a far as Federal elections go; this one, May 2019, was very, very different.

Much has been written in public print media and much has been said on public radio and television about the policies of both parties, the manner in which both parties’ policies were presented to the electorate and the personalities involved. And, Cranky Lizard cannot add to the value of the public debate by re-visiting these already published opinions and comments.

But, Cranky Lizard’s focus is captured by the mindset of the left media, who were encouraged by the apparatchiks of the Labour Party ministerial staff and the commentators of the socialist academia, who ran a constant, almost arrogant line, of we shall win – like it or lump it ! Indeed, such was the arrogance that this attitude encouraged that the Shadow Treasurer indicated, on public radio, that if the electorate did not like the policies of the Labor Party, they were quite free to vote against them! In other words, a substantial element of the electorate was simply being dismissed as irrelevant, in a Federal Election Cranky Lizard reckons that everyone is relevant. N’cest pa ? Cranky Lizard was not in Queensland for the election campaign, but close by; close enough to observe, in wonder, at the shenanigans of Bob Brown and the Stop Adani Convoy. The Labor Party obviously approved of this activity, because nowhere did Cranky Lizard see or hear any protest or meaningful disassociation from the any senior member of the Labor campaign team, or indeed the Leader of the Opposition himself! This wilful act, and it was a wilful act, demonstrated how irrelevant the lives of Central Queenslanders were to those running the Labor campaign. Once again they dismissed a substantial portion of the electorate as irrelevant. Of great concern to Cranky Lizard, and to other Australians residing in rural areas, regional suburban areas and major regional cities was the quite deliberate attempt to create a ‘ generational divide ‘. The clear implication being that ‘ baby boomers ‘ had had an easy run at gathering wealth over the past few decades and now it was time to re-distribute some of the

wealth to generations of young Australians, who, were led to believe that they had had ‘ it tough and it was time for a fair go’. Just exactly what a ‘ fair go ‘ actually meant was not specified – but it was apparent that feelings of envy and angst were generated along with some quite misleading expectations of how redistribution was meant to take place. Attempting to divide generations of Australians by envy and age is a pretty poor approach to politics and approach which angered, deeply angered, many Australians who did belong to the inner city elites, the greens or any other group of noisy people shouting their causes on a daily basis. Cranky Lizard observes that there was an obvious strategy to ‘ ring fence ‘ certain groups in the electorate, home owners, and potential home owners wishing to negative gear an investment property, retired Australians whose retirement income came from investments they made through their own hard work and intelligence and small to medium business owners who were regularly told that they were unfair to their employees, either not paying them enough, exploiting them through penalty rates or all of the above. We all know, because the story has been told many times, that elections in Australia, particularly Federal Elections are won by holding or attracting the middle ground of the population. In most cases, and in general terms, you can say that 40 % of the electorate will never vote for you no matter what you say, promise or do – they are rusted on to their cause and that is that ! Likewise it is fair to say that 40% of the electorate will vote for you because, they too, are rusted on to your cause, and unless you really blow them away you can count on their vote. If we do the maths, that leaves, say, 20% of the electorate whose votes are not committed and they will place those votes with the political party that attracts them on the day. This is the ‘ middle ground ‘ if you like and it is here that political parties usually focus their attention.

But, as Cranky Lizard mentioned at the beginning of this piece, this election was very, very different. Some of the middle had been blown

policies. Bluntly speaking, the Opposition allowed that wretched creature ‘ hubris ‘ to sneak into their dreams and convince them that the election was a “shoo- in “. Because, by Cranky Lizard’s reckoning, the Australian Labor Party have always been very, very good at running election campaigns and this campaign strategy flies in the face of common sense. It is fair to say that once you have let ‘ hubris ‘ into your world it will not be very long before the ugly sister of ‘ hubris ‘ enters your world as well. That ugly sister is ‘ nemesis ‘ and she disguised herself extremely well for many weeks. She was lost in the hype, the media cycle, the shouting, the finger pointing, the brightly coloured bus journeys and the dust of the scurrying mob as they crept towards their Appointment in Samara – 18 May – Polling Day. Senior political commentators have spoken about the phenomena, and Cranky Lizard agrees with them : the arrogance, the patronising, the obfuscation over policy costs and the general finger pointing and shouting about climate change, coal mining, penalty rates, housing investment and negative gearing plus the persistent ‘ retirement tax ‘ spectre had only one significant outcome. The middle ground, the several million quiet Australians represented a ‘ bear that had been poked once too many times ‘ and the bear swung its large paw at the polling booth becoming the ‘ nemesis ‘ the Labor Party had dismissed, and, in swinging its paw, the bear knocked ‘ hubris and nemesis ‘ into political history. In conclusion, Cranky Lizard comments that elections like the one just past do not occur very often, usually political parties are too smart to ‘ poke the bear ‘. But if you do ‘ poke the bear ‘ then watch out ; they, the middle ground, will vote you down and then go and have a barbecue lunch with their families and their mates and forget all about you. And, that is nothing more than you deserve. Enjoy your days.

Statement from the Premier Vale Bob Hawke Bob Hawke was a genuine man of the people. It didn’t matter who you were, where you lived or what you did, Bob treated everyone the same. I first met him when I was in school and he treated me exactly the same as he did many years later when I became Premier. I’ll treasure the memory of being with Bob on Labour Day in the birthplace of the Labor Party in Barcaldine. Bob was too unwell to march and was pushed in his wheelchair. But when the march came to its end at the showgrounds I’ll never forget the way Bob got out of that chair, walked onstage and addressed the crowd. He was such a magnificent and inspirational speaker. And in that same, strong, clear voice so familiar to us, he sang Solidarity Forever. Bob fought fiercely for things, not against them. He called it consensus. I describe it as working best when we work together. Bob loved the Woodford Folk Festival and its celebration of ideas. He told me to look after it and I will. And then we said goodbye. I didn’t realise it would be for the last time. “I don’t think I’ll be back,” Bob said. Then this man who I had respected and admired for almost my entire life looked at me and smiled. “Just keep doing what you’re doing.” The loss we feel is a measure of how much he meant to all of us.

Some of us are in shock because our concern for the future of our Earth is our priority. But then again, isn’t having a job a basic right? Instead of judging those who voted differently from ourselves, I think it would be sensible and respectful to hear their point of view. The Australian Financial Review has a weekly section where Australian leaders are asked what they would do on day one if they were our Prime Minister. I am particularly interested in David Atkin’s reply as CEO of Cbus Superannuation, an industry fund. He said he would bring together Commonwealth, State and superannuation leaders to work together on a long-term, co-ordinated plan to tackle big issues such as infrastructure, transport, housing, energy and housing affordability. He gave examples of where such a co-operative approach is already working effectively. He also said that Australian business leaders are taking climate change seriously, many investing in a transition to a cleaner economy. I am encouraged by this. If business takes a leading role in saving our planet as well as dealing with our economy, hopefully our politicians will too. Is bipartisan, co-operation too much to hope for? Can’t our elected representatives take on board what engineers, scientists and environmentalists tell us? Can’t they listen to organisations that deal with unemployment and poverty? Instead of politicians making decisions based on political advantage wouldn’t it be intelligent to work together with those who identify and solve serious problems? My grandchildren have told me that they worry about the planet and their future. They also worry about finding jobs and youth mental health.

She had the vision and courage to protest herself and this led to other school students joining her. It is now a world-wide movement led by students, including Australians. The LOCAL News. Our state government representative, Simone Wilson, has been listening to the community’s anger about pelicans and the installation of metal deterrents along Bribie Bridge. ‘I have taken this issue to the Minister’s office to intervene as I want this situation rectified and the pelicans to return to their safe roost’ she told the LOCAL News, Island and Surrounds. I hope she succeeds. If more and more of us join her, chances of a satisfactory outcome will increase accordingly. It’s a matter of working together.

What do camping, whiskey, jazz, lawyers and rare books have in common? Rotary of course. Getting together to build friendships and lifelong links while doing the things that make you happy - that is why we have Rotary Fellowships. These Fellowships are international groups that share a common interest. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends around the world, explore a

• hobby or profession and enhance your Rotary experience.

The month of June is designated as “Rotary Fellowships Month” by the Rotary International Board. This is done to recognise the importance of international fellowship and good will amongst Rotarians who have similar recreational interests. June – or “Juno” is the patron goddess of Rome. She is also the goddess of marriage and childbirth – thus also a link to family – which in essence is Rotary – ie a large, cosmopolitan, family, from around the globe. There are 79 different Fellowships listed on the Rotary International Website. Interests range from amateur radio to marathon running, from quilting to rowing, skiing and surfing, yoga to yachting and from cricket, curling and cycling to chess, music and photography. There are groups for Doctor, Lawyers, Police, Educators, Genealogists, Magicians, Doll Lovers, Scouts and Shooters. As for food and drink, besides the Whiskey group, there are beer, wine and gourmet cooking groups. Cultural study groups include Russian, Latin and Italian. All the Fellowship groups have their own ByLaws and follow Rotary requirements for record keeping, membership and financial management. The 79 groups include:

The Wine Appreciation Fellowship’s whose objective is to earn more about wine, wine and food pairings and any other topics related to the appreciation of wine, thus enhancing their own appreciation of good wine. This objective is accomplished through sharing knowledge and experiences and by learning from the many wine experts and knowledgeable Rotarians throughout the world. The group have a very informative Website. We all know that wine can help in times of stress. I well remember a friend telling me

The Singles Fellowship who network with fellow Rotarian Singles and friends, in order to share ideas, make travel easier and more economical by sharing room expenses, provide support for Rotary service activities, make lasting friendships and practice the ideals of Rotary. They specify that they are not a dating service.

The Recreational Vehicle (RV) Fellowship who visited our Bribie Club in April and joined in the fun of our our Trivia night. They are a group of like minded Rotarians who enjoy participating in recreational pursuits including Caravanning and 4WD driving. The Australian Group meet socially several times a year at local “zone” gatherings, or sometimes interstate. They have an annual National gathering which includes their Annual General meeting. Like many of the Fellowships, the RV held pre and post meetings at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg Germany which was held between 1-5 June 2019. The International Fellowship of Rotarian Educators who are dedicated to promoting quality education (both public and private) as well as other types of training and development such as Continuing Education (CE), Further Education, Adult Education, Lifelong Learning and other forms of instruction as an opportunity for fellowship. The goal of this Fellowship is to enhance the literacy skills of English language learners of all ages. They provide a free reading program to help improve English reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and much more! 60,000 + students are currently using the program. The Home Exchange Fellowship’s whose purpose is to encourage home exchange by Rotarians. When you trade the use of your home with a family from another country you are participating in marvellous cultural exchange program. The Fellowship has partnered with an independent home exchange agency www. HomeExchange50plus.com, who have website for facilitating house swaps. When you join the Rotarian Home Exchange fellowship your home is listed with other Rotary homes for exchange. You can exchange with Rotary families or widen the choice by saying you are willing to exchange with non-Rotarian families listed on the agency’s site.

From tipples to tents – music to magic – we cover camping, whiskey, jazz, lawyers and rare books et al. But these are just some of the 79 Fellowship groups available to all Rotarians. From these interest groups you can see that Rotary truely does connect the world. Labor backing union bosses over renewable energy

The LNP have today slammed the Palaszczuk Labor Government for wasting more taxpayers’ money in fighting the Supreme Court’s declaration that their flawed solar farm laws were invalid.

LNP Shadow Minister for Energy Michael Hart said that Labor were more interested in backing the union bosses than supporting more renewable energy. “This appeal is a blatant waste of taxpayers’ money,” Mr Hart said.

“Labor’s new solar farm laws would have cost jobs and increased electricity bills.

Country music singer Rod Williams, Friend and one time music colleague and mentor to world super star Keith Urban now days spends his time promoting and running a non-profit Country Music Club which he is cofounder and President. Sundowners Country Music Club Inc was formed some nine years ago and stages socials 1st Sunday of each month at the Geebung Bowls Club, Robinson Road, Geebung on Brisbane’s Northsides. Rod himself a duel Gold Guitar nominee says he finds it very satisfying and rewarding to witness the clubs growth over the years to become one of the most successful country music clubs in the state, boasting a club membership in excess of 120 members from not only the greater Brisbane area but north to Bribie Island, west to Ipswich and south to Browns Plains etc and boasting crowd attendance of 130- 160 each social with the emphasis being on the older generation ages 60-90 that make up the members and guests of the club. The club recently obtained a state government grant of some $34,000 to upgrade their sound system etc and boasts state of the art sound equipment which would be the envy of any music club in the country. Rod says the club is a great place to socialise not only for followers of country music but for the wonderful friendship and camaraderie the club and its members offer to everyone that attends. The club offers wonderful prizes and a cash jackpot for club members. The club encourages anyone that would like to perform on the day of the social and stages a special Guest Artist each month with some well-known names with in the country music industry performing, together with regular entertainers and a great backing band. The clubs venue offers air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating, hot meals and bar service with ample parking available. Socials start at 11am and conclude around 4.30pm, admission for the day is only $6 making it the most inexpensive fun and entertainment experience ever. “We need to encourage more renewable generation, not less – to drive down electricity bills. “Labor’s flawed laws would have cost Maryborough Solar over $2.6 million more for one solar farm project alone,” Mr Hart said.

LNP Shadow Industrial Relations Minister Jarrod Bleijie said the Court decision was clear-cut and Labor should be going back to the drawing board.

“This is just another example of how the Palaszczuk Labor Government is owned lock, stock and barrel by the union movement,” Mr Bleijie said. “The Minister tried to re-define what constitutes electrical equipment and she was basically laughed out of the Supreme Court.

“She has tried to make new laws outside her power and has been caught out. “This was never about safety and always about the ETU campaign against renewable energy projects,” Mr Bleijie said.

More protection for children under tougher Blue Card laws

The Palaszczuk Government has added 15 more crimes to the list of disqualifying offences when applying for a Blue Card, as part of its overhaul of Queensland’s working with children check system. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 passed by the Queensland Parliament today was the first in a series of sweeping reforms to the system. “Blue Cards are one of a range of measures in place across government to protect children,” she said. “After its comprehensive review of the Blue Card System, the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) found our State has one of the strongest working with children check systems in Australia. “The Palaszczuk Government has been strengthening the system since the QFCC handed down its 81 recommendations. “This legislation implements the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and QFCC to include bestiality, kidnapping of a child, kidnapping for ransom of a child, child stealing and abduction of a child under 16 as disqualifying offences under the Working with Children Act. “The Government has also chosen to include murder of an adult and rape of an adult as disqualifying offences, as well. Murder of a child and sexual offences against children are already on the list of disqualifying offences. “Torture of a child, attempt to commit rape of an adult, assault with intent

to commit rape of an adult, cruelty to children under 16, trafficking in children and domestic trafficking in children will also be added to the disqualifying offences list.” Mrs D’Ath said the legislation also delivered on the Government’s election commitment to implement a ‘No Card, No Start’ system, ensuring the framework needed. “This means applicants will not be able to commence paid employment while their Blue Card application is pending, reducing the risk to children and further strengthening Queensland’s robust Blue Card System,” she said. “We are injecting $17 million over the next three years into modernizing the Blue Card System. “One in six Queensland adults hold a Blue Card and more than 32,000 organizations are part of the Blue Card System. It is vital to ensure that users are ready for the changes when they go live in early 2020. “No Card, No Start will bring paid employees into line with volunteers and business operators and will prevent someone from employing a person in child-related employment unless the person holds a working with children clearance and the employer has notified the chief executive about the employment or proposed employment of the person. “To emphasize the significant responsibility that employers have as the gatekeepers of child-related employment, increased penalties will be imposed against an employer who engages an employee without a working with children clearance, if an aggravating circumstance applies. Someone who starts or continues in regulated employment without a Blue Card could face a five year jail term, in certain circumstances. The changes to the disqualification framework are expected to commence on July 1, 2019.

2019/20 Budget Concessions to assist the elderly and household budgets

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Government will commit $5.66bn in the 2019/20 State Budget to help Queenslanders’ household budgets.

“The 11 June State Budget will keep delivering on the commitments we’ve made to Queenslanders and will help hard pressed families, young people and our seniors and pensioners to manage the cost of living. “I am always mindful of the need to ease the burden of household bills. “Our extensive range of concessions are there to assist Queenslanders no matter where they live” Ms Palaszczuk said. “Assisting seniors and pensioners is quite rightly, always a key priority for the Labor Government. “They deserve a fair go and proper recognition.” The Budget will allocate more than $5.66bn in the 2019/20 financial year which is more than a $76m increase over the Budget commitment in 2018/19. That’s the equivalent of more than $1,000 in concessions for every Queenslander. The assistance includes $192.3m to deliver the electricity rebate to eligible seniors, pensioners, veterans and low-income families. The electricity rebate provides assistance of $341 per year towards electricity costs. To help pensioners to live in their own homes the Pensioner Rate Subsidy Scheme offers a 20% subsidy (up to a maximum of $200 per year) to lessen the impact of local government rates and charges. And the Pensioner Water Waste Subsidy Scheme provides up to $120 a year for them to reduce water bills. These two schemes alone are budgeted to save Queensland pensioners $74.1 million over the next twelve months. Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad said the 11 June Budget will invest in jobs today and for the future and will keep delivering in the key areas of health and education. “There are a range of concessions for younger Queenslanders,” Ms Trad said, “To help them get started on a career or into a job, textbook and resource allowances are available for secondary students and travel and accommodation subsidies for apprentices.” In 2017 the Palaszczuk Government extended the eligibility for the Electricity Rebate to Commonwealth Health Care Card (HCC) holders and asylum seekers, however too many are still missing out as they haven’t applied for it.

New water jet machine for Council

It can pump 333litres of water per minute via an 180metre hose. Called a jet rodder vaccum truck, it’s Moreton Bay Regional Council’s latest machinery and will help crews to maintain thousands of kilometres of stormwater network across the region. “Clogged stormwater drains are dangerous and can pose a flood risk especially in our region where we are prone to severe weather events,” Spokesperson for Asset Construction and Maintenance Councillor Adam Hain said. “This new piece of equipment will assist our crews to effectively and efficiently clean our stormwater drains so there isn’t a build-up of debris. Worth $750,000 the truck also comes

equipped with various root cutting and flushing nozzles. “The jet rodder will work in conjunction with our CCTV camera inspection vans, which detect what’s accumulated in our stormwater network. Councillor Hain said Council had previously sourced the works externally to manage the region’s stormwater network. “Now we’ve got this new jet rodder on site, we can access it anytime and target areas with greater ease anywhere in our region,” he said. “Another plus it’s a cost effective measure especially when our crews are inspecting and cleaning the stormwater network on a daily basis.”

User Choice - Apprentice and Trainee Training Subsidy ($199.0 million) provides government funding of between $1,150 and $50,720 towards the costs of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees. Vocational Education and Training - Certificate III Guarantee Tuition Fee Subsidy ($193.7 million) helps eligible Queenslanders to obtain their first post-school Certificate III qualification to gain a job or to improve their employment status. Electricity Rebate Scheme ($192.3 million) helps Queensland pensioners and seniors pay their electricity bill with a rebate of up to $341 a year. Vehicle and Boat Registration Concessions ($185.1 million) reduces the cost of vehicle and boat registration fees for seniors and pensioners. School Transport Assistance Scheme ($139.0 million)helps eligible families that do not have a school in their local area, or who are from eligible low-income groups with school travel costs. Oral Health Scheme ($163.6 million) provides free dental care to eligible Queenslanders and their dependents. Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme ($92.5 million)provides financial assistance to patients who need to access specialist medical services not available within their local area. It provides a subsidy towards the cost of travel and accommodation for patients and, in some cases, an approved escort. Vocational Education and Training – Higher Level Skills Tuition Fee Subsidy ($75 million) subsidises the cost of tuition fees paid by students undertaking a priority Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma or industry endorsed skill set. Pensioner Rate Subsidy Scheme ($55.2 million) offers a 20% subsidy, up to a maximum of $200 per year, to lessen the impact of local government rates and charges on pensioners, thereby assisting them to continue to live in their own homes. School Transport Allowance for Students with Disabilities ($45.8 million) assists families of students with disabilities with transport to attend state school programs.

Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme provides funding assistance to eligible people for a range of aids and equipment, like mobility aids, artificial limbs or vehicle modifications, to help them live at home and avoid premature or inappropriate residential care or hospitalisation. Rental Bond Loans provides interest-free rental bond loans, equivalent to a maximum amount of four weeks rent, for people who cannot afford to pay a full bond to move into private rental accommodation. Spectacle Supply Scheme provides eligible Queensland residents with a pair of basic prescription spectacles, once every two years. Not knowing crabbing rules results in $7000 fine at Caboolture

Crabbers are urged to know Queensland’s crabbing rules after a man was fined more than $7000 for taking undersized crabs from the Caboolture River, north of Brisbane. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said in April 2018, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers found the man with eleven undersized male mud crabs and eight females, which are protected in Queensland.

“We cannot stress enough that crabbers have a responsibility to ensure they understand and are up-to-date with Queensland’s fishing rules,” he said. “Fishing rules exist to protect resources so we can leave a legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren. “Ignorance is no excuse and, in this instance, not knowing the rules has ended in a very costly day out.”

The man also pleaded guilty in the Caboolture Magistrates Court to failing to mark his crab pots and was fined a total of $7095.80.

Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said the case also highlighted the valuable work of the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol.

“Officers were doing a routine patrol of the Uhlmann Boat ramp on the Caboolture River when their suspicions were first aroused,” Mr Ryan said said.

“But the QBFP also relies greatly on the community’s support to provide relevant and timely information relating to potential offences concerning our valuable fishery resources.”

“People who suspect illegal fishing activity should report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116. “The registration details of the alleged offenders car and or boat should be collected and reported to the Fishwatch hotline but don’t engage with the person, as this can compromise an investigation and possibly your safety.”

New survey to assess contribution of Queensland’s commercial fisheries

Commercial fisheries are a valuable part of the Queensland economy – and a new study will measure exactly how valuable. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner today announced the new study to calculate the economic and socialimpact of Queensland’s commercial fisheries.

“Commercial fishers, associated seafood processors and charter fishers make an important contribution to Queensland’s economy and community,” the Minister said. “BDO Econsearch has been awarded the contract to do a landmark two-year study. “They will be engaging with industry bodies such as the Queensland Seafood Industry Association and

“They’ll be encouraging commercial fishers to come forward and talk to researchers about their operations, including how many people they employ and their annual turnover.”

Starting in October, the study will collect data on the 2017-18 and 2018-19 financial years. “By March next year we should have a better understanding of how valuable commercial fisheries are to Queensland’s economy and community,” Mr Furner said.

Reiq welcomes APRA announcement

THE REIQ welcomes news today that APRA is proposing removing the quantitative guidance on the level of the serviceability floor rate, allowing lenders to set their own floor rate. At the moment, APRA requires lenders to assess a borrower’s serviceability at 7 per cent (some lenders use 7.25 per cent), or 2 per cent above the borrower’s rate (whichever is higher), a buffer designed to ensure borrowers could continue to service the mortgage should interest rates rise. APRA is also proposing to increase the expected level of the serviceability buffer from 2 per cent to 2.5 per cent above the rate the borrower pays. Pressure has been mounting recently, with experts and commentators suggesting 7 per cent was unreasonably high as actual mortgage rates continued to fall. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said this could mean a significant difference for many first home buyers trying to get into the market. “We know that buyers are trying to get into the market but have been falling short of the 7% or 7.25% serviceability rate set by APRA and enforced by lenders,” she said. “The consistent feedback we have received from our agents is that there has been a rising number of contracts falling over at the finance stage and we know this is largely down to

serviceability assessments. “This is a wise and prudent move from APRA and the real estate industry welcomes this sensible, measured approach.” With many home loans now set at a rate of around 3.9 per cent, having such a high benchmark for serviceability – at more than 7 per cent – was considered by financial experts to be unreasonably high. It would take several rate rises over several years to get close to 7 per cent and in the current climate – with a further rate cut widely tipped next month – this is increasingly unlikely. “The REIQ supports this sensible approach. Banks will continue to assess risk appropriately and responsibly. This measure will simply free lenders up to lend responsibly to more borrowers who are keen to use property to build their personal wealth,” Ms Mercorella said. “In the post-Inquiry climate, the perception in the community is that it’s very difficult to borrow for a property. This proposed change will give lenders an opportunity to reassess lending assessment criteria and, potentially, give more loans. “Just as the real estate market benefits from greater confidence, so, too, does the finance sector and it’s crucial that banks work to re-build that trust,” Ms Mercorella said.

Important decisions such as which subjects to take, whether or not to join any clubs, and even how a child chooses to learn are all on the minds of today’s students. However, the decision of which laptop to buy to enhance your notetaking abilities is an easy one – the HP ProBook is clearly the superior device. The new input of one of HP’s best laptops since 1999 has sparked lots of young minds to apply themselves as best as they can to do well in schools. This device has an intel core i5, a long battery life, and the fastest working core among modern laptops and because of this it has been popular among all age groups. From personal experience the laptop has proven quite useful during every subject, especially with special features such as 360-degree rotation. Picture yourself in a mathematics classroom. The teacher asks the class

to solve an equation on the board, but you don’t have any paper and your only pencil is blunt. We’ve all heard about global warming, but have you really thought about how it will affect your life?

For the residents of Bribie Island, global warming could have very real and devastating effects on our community. One of the main impacts of global warming is sea-level rise. Even now, islands such as the Maldives, Kiribati and Tuvalu are already grappling with the effects of rising sea levels. Although this seems like a far-away problem that we don’t need to worry about, it may soon have the same impact on our home, Bribie Island. Today, global sea level is around 13-20cm higher than it was in 1900. It’s eventually expected to rise approximately 2.3 metres for every degree that climate change warms the planet. The main influencing factor of this issue comes from the melting of ice due to global warming, although the gravitational pull on Earth and the planet’s rotational spin also have minor effects on sea level.

The first signs of the rising waters will begin with minor and major floods becoming more common. Ocean flooding will contaminate land and drinking water, rendering Bribie useless before it’s even submerged. Coastlines, shores and beaches will also creep backwards, posing yet another threat to

huge numbers of people.

So, what will happen if Bribie goes underwater? It’s not something that’ll happen overnight. With most of the island only about a metre above sealevel, the rising waters could potentially flood Bribie, destroying our houses and buildings. In 2018, there were approximately 33,000 people living on the island, and this number is undoubtably still rising. Many thousands of people will be forced to evacuate, leaving their worthless properties behind. This will cause problems for people looking for a new place to live; they may struggle financially after losing housing and businesses. Since no one wants Bribie Island to go underwater, we need to figure out a way to help. Although we’re not going to able to completely stop sea level rise, there are a number of small things that we can all do to reduce its effects. Some of these can even help you save money, which is a win-win situation for everyone.

Simple things like taking public transport instead of your own vehicles, wasting less food and water, using energy efficient light bulbs and unplugging electronics that aren’t in use will all make a difference, especially if everyone does it. You should also think about making bigger changes such as powering your home with renewable energy, investing in energy-efficient appliances and driving a fuel-efficient vehicle such as a hybrid car. Global warming has been identified as an issue for decades, but considering the scale of the issue, we really haven’t done much about it. We’re running out of time.

Winter in the subtropics, its blooming marvellous!

The temps are receding these last few weeks, but how good is it to see so much variety of winter flowers blooming around the place? With vivid red pin cushion stamens of Metrosideros, yellow flowers of golden pendastill on show, various species of Bougainvillea, Plumeria, Strelitzia, Radermachera and of course the magnificent show of Camellias, also Tabebuia and Poinsettia, and the scent of Gardenia- still in the air. And the ever so, winter- warming, colour spectacle of the orange trumpet creeper- Pyrostegia venusta, hanging over the fence in full bloom, and the abundant blooming buds of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana -with variants of colours of white, pink, apricot and reds, ensures that winter in the subtropics is still an exciting horticultural spectacle indeed. At home in the patch, and now the weather is colder and also the seed germination process slower, it certainly helps if you already have sown your herb or vegetable seeds in autumn in preparation for this winter but there is still plenty of time to catch up with planting out seedlings of tomato, capsicum, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, leeks, onions, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Also, a good time to sow seeds of beetroot and silver beet now too. Living in the subtropics can be advantageous for planting in winter as we are generally frost free in the coastal districts, which allows us to plant some vegetables successively throughout the season, in comparison to our cool temperate zones further south or west of us. And all that compost and composted manures turned into the soil at the beginning of autumn should be working its magic by now especially after the abundant rainfall we received in May. After planting, apply seaweed tonics or worm tea- if you got some, which is extremely beneficial for plant establishment, as is also, applying a thin layer of lucerne or sugarcane mulch around the new plants for protection and especially around strawberry, as the fruit ripening now can tend to rot in the damp soil at night. As far as watering goes, its best to irrigate in the morning to prevent promoting any fungal activity or bacterial diseases that are usually prevalent in damp conditions. These days no matter how small your garden space is, you can grow vegetables in raised garden beds or containers as long there is at least 6 to 8 hours sunshine- for optimum results. I mentioned last article on the benefits of composting your kitchen scraps in a worm farm (vermicomposting) and the value of the worm castings for our sandy soils here on the coast and the benefits of straining the liquid worm tea, for use as plant tonics. I like to alternate foliar feeding with fish, seaweed and worm tonics in between the watering schedule in the mornings.

Tibouchina ‘Peace Baby’

The morning dews!

Tibouchina ‘Peace Baby’, is a gorgeous, freeflowering and compact evergreen shrub with large white flowers with spectacular pink stamens that grows up to 60 cm tall and 80 cm wide.‘Peace Baby’, is part of the ‘Fantasy Flowers’ Collection and was bred in Queensland by- Terry Keogh. The example in the image above, is currently blooming in late autumn with masses of flowers each up to 5 cm across. This particular specimen had literally up to 100 more flower buds ready to burst in succession among the plants already spectacular- full bloom. This plant has been flowering throughout the intense heat of our summer and now is thriving after the arrival of some damp and rainy conditions we recieved throughout late autumn. Tibouchinas, are native to sub-tropical Brazil, Mexico and the Carribean and are not generally tolerant of colder climates but Terry Keogh has successfully bred- these cultivars, to perform well in the subtropical and cool climate areas in Australia. His other cultivars marketed under the ‘Fantasy Flowers’ Collection are: Tibouchina ‘Groovy Baby’, which has beautiful large, vivid- purple flowers which only grows to 45cm H by 45 cm W, and Tibouchina ‘Cool Baby’, is another dwarf compact stunning performer with white and pink flowers with pink margins that adorn the plant throughout the warmer months too. Interestingly, the Tibouchinas, in the wild and in their native origin are normally pollinated by hummingbirds but Terry Keogh, has manged to replicate the vibrational frequency- to stimulate the pollens release and his method is considered a trade secret to this day. All the ‘Fantasy Flowers’ Collection are protected with (PBR) = (Plant Breeding Rights) in Australia. With all the pests and diseases about, its great to see some beautiful flowering shrubs that are hardy and grow well in our subtropical climate!

Its official- winter it is, and the temperatures have finally dropped accordingly but those very damp weather conditions we experienced in autumn really promoted some serious fungal activity around the place also. Myrtle rust is still plaguing some of our native plants and there has been a lot of pest pressure affecting citrus also, with leaf miner, aphids, scale and mealy bug-to name a few. Frangipani rust has also been rampant in the district due to all the humid weather in the last couple of months, which has contributed to full blown infections on some trees around the coast, causing premature leaf drop on some of the deciduous species and stunting the growth on some of the Plumeria obtusa, especially the younger trees. If your citrus trees have been hammered, then it’s a good time to prune any badly diseased or distorted foliage off and treat with some seaweed tonics all over before the next flower set. Myrtle rust can be a real pain to treat but if the outbreak is treatable (able to prune the diseased foliage off at a manageable height), then pruning these plants a few days after treatment with a (registered fungicide), will be beneficial. All pruning matter should be bagged, sealed and disposed of in the bin to prevent further spread of the fungal spores on your property- and don’t forget to sterilise your pruning equipment afterwards. I have found that some species like- Gossia inophloia- ‘Blushing Beauty’, Syzygium jambos, and Callistemon- ‘Great Balls of Fire’ are getting infected year after year with myrtle rust. The disease is so well established now that I always advise my clients to the potential of infection of known vulnerable species when collaborating on new garden designs together and recommend another suitable hardy plant that may suffice in its place. If you are pruning multiple shrubs from one plant to another in your garden without sterilising your cutting equipment, you may find you are unwittingly- spreading the disease around and possibly infecting some of the other native plants from the Myrtaceae family too, like: Tea trees, lemon myrtle or bottle brush. Hygiene practices, with keen observation, by regular inspecting the leaves, stems and fallen fruit for any sign of pest and disease problems will assist greatly in early diagnosis, for immediate treatment. Non systemic (protective treatments) -which do not curefungal diseases, are treatments that use products such as copper oxychloride or Mancozeb (allowed for myrtle rust) and lime sulphur or potassium bicarbonate for geranium rust or powdery mildew. These must be applied to all leaves, stems and fruit to be effective but the timing between wet weather episodes is critical. Obviously, the humidity contributes to the establishment of fungal diseases in lawns and plants, so the effectiveness of the above products becomes limited due to the onset of any rain periods which can wash off the active ingredients into the soil profile, which can also have a negative effect on the microbial soil life (especially with copper). Another good option is to try and bring the nutrition levels up with a slow release, Australian native plant- friendly, organic fertiliser- to help fortify and aid in the plant’s recovery (Seaweed- may assist here). June 2019 Fishing Report – The Island and Surrounds

The Autumn fishing has been loads of good fun, with plenty of different species, in all the usual places. Not all of the fish being hooked are legal-size, in fact there are heaps of tiddlers about, but it all makes for some good family fishing in the Passage.

Bribie Island Fishing Club also had a good day out today, catching more than 40 fish - mostly undersized, but some nice-sized venus tuskfish among them. There were some bullseyes in their tally, too - odd-looking fish, which like to come into shallow sections of the Passage over winter. As the wind has been turning from one direction to another, the best fishing has swung from one side of the passage to the other. There have been some impressive Venus tusk-fish caught near Turner’s Camp – this has been particularly at or near the top of the tide, on a light wind. Just coming into the next new moon, conditions should be excellent for targeting this excellent table-fish, even if it is almost too pretty to eat! Try some mullet fillet on a smallish hook, with a nice strong leader. The other side of the Passage has been the most consistent fishing ground over the past couple of weeks. From the second red marker north of the bridge, up past the entrance to Pacific Harbour and Banksia Beach, right to the top end of White Patch – there is almost always something on the bite, lately. Moses perch and grassy sweetlips have been fairly common finds over that way; some of the sweetlips, in particular, have been well and truly dinner-sized. There have also been plenty of good bream, in the canals of Pacific Harbour, as well as along the side of Banksia Beach. Terence and his mates brought a couple of nice ones home; caught with mullet on a falling tide, just off the Avon wreck. Some bigger snapper have been showing up in the same spots as the sweetlip and moses perch. It’s always good to see them back; there have been reports of some very impressive snapper at the ripples near Pacific Harbour. The south-easterly breezes have been encouraging the snapper- try to get started early in the day, using soft-plastic lures or fresh fillets.

Chris showed me some great photos of his catches this past couple of weeks, including a heap of sand crabs. The saying goes that crabbing takes place in the months of the year with "R" in them but many locals believe that the best months are from about March through to June.

Chris also had some big snapper for dinner the other night – he tells me the best way to cook them are whole, stuffed with onion, brown rice and apple. Try it! Outside the Passage, Cook’s Rocks has been fishing well, for whiting especially but the wind has been a little changeable and not always good for a pleasant day’s fishing. There has been a fair bit of weed outside the Passage (often called blanket weed, because that’s what it does – it blankets your anchor line, your fishing line and your bait!). The ocean beach, south of Woorim, has been hit from time to time, making the whiting fishing quite tricky. There have been some reports of tailor – both surfside and in the Passage. Soon they’ll be running, and that means even more fun!

Environmental regulations severely eroded, Says Simone Wilson MP

Most have heard about the fish kill disaster at Beachmere Lake in late March, where an estimated 55,000 fish of various species and sizes were killed. I immediately brought this to the attention of the State Environment Minister, Leeanne Enoch, asking her for urgent intervention and for her department to be involved in investigating the kill. The Minister later replied indicating that she was happy with the advice of the Moreton Bay Regional Council that an algal bloom was responsible. She concluded that Council, not her department of experts, was the appropriate entity to respond to this matter. I’d be pretty confident in say that in anyone’s view this is far from an adequate response from a Minister who has the responsibility to enforce environmental regulations. If fish kills of this magnitude are not properly investigated by the regulator, then there is no way that the Government can determine whether any breaches of the Fisheries Act or the Environmental Protection Act occurred. No way whatsoever. It seems that the only thing the Palaszczuk Labor Government is succeeding in is failing to enforce its own environmental regulations. Simone Wilson MP

Probably the most plentiful fish in the past week have been whiptails – a pretty, slender fish with three bluish stripes across the snout, and yellow stripes from behind the eye to below the pectoral fin. The upper tail-fin is often stretched into a very long filament. Although the cool snap at the start of June might spell an end to the best of the crabbing, there have been plenty in the pots lately. Evan, who has a boat in Spinnaker Sound Marina, showed us a mud crab he picked up on the weekend. It was nice and full, trapped just south of Poverty Creek, using mullet - of course.

When we come together as a community munity to fight for what we believe in and hold dear we are a true force! Our solidarity has been on display since the day the Department of Transport and Main Roads rolled into town under the cover of darkness to install the steel bird deterrents on the lights of Bribie Bridge. Little did the Transport Minister, Mark Bailey, know just how much our pelicans are revered by locals, but quickly he discovered that warding off our mascots would cause community uproar. As a result of our combined actions the Minister has ordered his department to look at alternative perches across the bridge so that our pelicans can once again have a safe place to roost. Whilst the details of how and when this will be done is still up in the air, please be assured that I am working behind the scenes to get definitive answers and I will keep updating on my Facebook page @SimoneWilsonMP. There is one very special lady that I would like to acknowledge who has gone to enormous efforts to save our pelicans. Chris Wilson of Sandstone Point has been a driving force behind organising the march across the bridge where around 1,000 people turned up and starting the petition. Chris gathered almost 2,000 signatures and I was very pleased to table this petition in Parliament recently. What an outstanding effort – our community (and our pelicans) thank you Chris.

Urgent Care After-Hours Clinic for Bribie A wise man once said “he who has health has hope – he who has hope has everything”. In recent months the LNP has been exposing the dire situation in our public hospitals, where people are being turned away from Emergency Departments and ambulance ramping continues to put patients at risk. Labor says there is nothing wrong with their public health system, there’s just too many patients! I have also reported how earlier this year I called on the Queensland Health Minister, Steven Miles, to provide funding in this year’s State budget to improve urgent care health services for Bribie Island locals. I reported how the Minister wasn’t bothered to reply to me himself, rather he had the Health Department respond on a matter of Government funding, which I found insulting to say the least. That response indicated that there was no justification to warrant an urgent care after-hours clinic on the Island, it was too expensive and the matter was closed. In a stunning turn of events, out of the blue a few weeks ago I received another letter from the Health Department saying they think Bribie Island would benefit from an urgent care clinic and indicating they will actively work with primary health providers on the Island to bring the development to fruition. What a positive turn around and goes to show what a bit of pressure from the local Member can do! I’m already working on mobilising the relevant parties to progress discussions and whilst it is disappointing that there is no funding on the table by the State Government for this clinic I’m determined to find other ways to make it happen.

Fair Go – You can’t tax your way to growth! Annastacia Palaszczuk and her deputy, Jackie Trad, are out of touch and have slapped locals with five new taxes and won’t rule out new tax hikes in the upcoming state budget. Right now Queensland has no economic plan to create jobs and all this Government is succeeding in is destroying business confidence at great cost to our local small and family businesses. When Jackie Trad hands down her budget on 11 June, we need to see more job-creating infrastructure, no new taxes and increased support for small business to create more local jobs. We have to do our part too and buy local – it’s the new Black in Pumicestone!

Age-Friendly Grants Residents can now apply for grants between $25,000 and $100,000 to support age-friendly community projects to help seniors participate in community life. Past projects have included digital literacy programs for seniors, encouraging story sharing. SOME RESPECT CT P PLEASE LEASE MINISTER – FIX BRIBIE ISLAND ROAD It’s taking far too long for the State Government to collect the $20 million cheque that’s been waiting in Canberra since last year and get on with the job of fixing Bribie Island Road. I want locals to enjoy a road that gets them home safer and sooner and I’ve been campaigning on this issue since day one in the job. There is absolutely no reason for the delay in fixing Bribie Island Road and no truth behind the Labor’s lies they’ve been peddling. I will stand by this, there is only one truth and that is the State Labor Government using the Federal funding to gain cheap political points by claiming it doesn’t exist. I’m demanding action and a little respect to Pumicestone by the State Government in getting this funding on the ground. You don’t deserve to be treated as fools and we should be downright angry about this. Join my fight to Fix Bribie Island Road by signing my petition and sending your message to Annastacia to get her Transport Minister working for us and fast.
