Welcome to issue 37 clients and readers. Where has this year gone? I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter holidays, in this issue we have a tribute to a very special day Mother’s Day coming this Sunday 12 May. From the team at the LOCAL news we wish all mothers a very happy day and hope you enjoy spending the time with your your family and hope they spoil you rotten. I would like to thank all the lil Locals for sending in their colouring in of the Easter Bunny. We had so many entries this issue from all ages. You will see the brilliant job they all did in our Chill Time section of the paper. Over the last few weeks we have seen our iconic pelicans disappear from the bridge. There is still a lot of controversy over the State Government changing our lights on the Bribie Island bridge and adding wire on the lights so the Pelicans can no longer sit on there. I am with our community on this reckless decision of the State Government’s decision to put the wire up without consultation in community including no consultation with our local member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson. We will wait and see if the Transport Minister will review this and hopefully remove the pelican deterrents, we want to see our pelicans come back to our bridge. Enjoy your read this issue. Where have all the Pelicans gone?
Each holiday period my grandchildren come to stay with us in this wonderful area that is Bribie.
Each time we cross the Bribie Bridge they see how many pelicans they can spot on the light fittings above. It has become a family ritual over many years. Now we see wires attached so that the pelicans can’t land on their favorite posts. What a tragedy!
The pelicans have been synonymous with this area. We are all heartbroken.
Is it worth knowing that the fittings and bridge below will now be in pristine condition! What a shame! Anne Hughes

In 2007, I did not vote for LABOR’S Kevin Rudd but he got elected and guess what, Interest Rates quickly went to 9.45% Interest rates always skyrocket under LABOR because they feed Inflation by promising higher wages, spend more money on services and higher taxes. I implore my fellow Longman voters not to let LABOR send our household broke again. At 10.73% if you borrow $300,000 then re-payments are ONE MILLION DOLLARS over 30 years. Under the current MORRISON GOVERNMENT Home borrowing Interest Rates are stable and at record lows below 4% equating to re-payment over 30 years of under $500,000 less than half of LABOR’S BILL…….. Why would anyone but the dumbest voter vote for that kind of debt? 10.73% will add more than $300 a week to Mortgage repayments and also for RENTERS... OUCH!! Disability Action Week grants
From May 1, local community groups can apply for up to $1,000 in funding to host events and activities through Disability Action Week thanks to Moreton Bay Regional Council. Disability Access Spokesperson Councillor Denise Sims said Disability Action Week, held annually in September, was a chance to empower people with disability and raise awareness of disability issues across the region. “This grant is a great way to support community groups and organisations to deliver initiatives in celebration of Disability Action Week and highlight disability issues in our community,” she said. “Last year, local community organisations held a variety of events and activities in their local area like an expo to showcase support services and a Sensory Pool Day.” With approximately one in five Queenslanders having a disability, and disability touching the lives of most Queenslanders in some way, the week is an important celebration. Funding closes July 1, 2019. Throughout our lives we ask many questions: where are my shoes? Can you help me with my homework? Can you please pick me up from school? More often than not we turn to our mothers to answer these important questions. They guide us through difficult situations and somehow manage the removal of various food stains, which is a super power in itself. Mother’s Day is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. We recognise our mothers, often with chocolate, flowers or handmade coupons that are redeemed years later. Other popular celebration ideas include a day out whether that be on a picnic or a swim at the beach. In Brisbane, many cafes and organisations arrange for brunches or lunches allowing for families and mothers to enjoy a lovely meal and discussion. Art galleries and museums are also open in Brisbane with exhibitions which promote a fun family day out. On Mother’s Day it is also important to recognise the service events, charities and companies that host events or promote raising awareness and money for women’s causes. Many brands also participate in raising awareness on Mother’s Day. For example, popular brand TOMS Australia, this year is yet again hosting their annual fun run with all profits being donated towards breast

cancer research. The Mother’s Day Classic is another fun run, hosted by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The nation-wide event that started in 1998, has had over one million and twenty-seven thousand participants and has donated over thirty-five million and three thousand dollars to breast cancer research programs over twenty-two years. Events such as these are not only a wonderful bonding experience but contribute towards a fantastic cause. Australians celebrate in many ways but across the world mothers are cherished and celebrated through various events. Within Brazil, multi-generational barbeques are held and children present performance and artwork to show their appreciation and love. In Japan, carnations are the flower of choice as they represent the gentle strength of mothers and portray the admiration the household has towards their matriarch. Indians take celebrations to the next level with a ten-day festival, called Durga Puja. The festival is seen as both a religious opportunity and as a chance for family reunion. In preparation, people spend the weeks leading up to the festival preparing food, gifts and decorating their homes. It does not matter how your family choses to celebrate Mothers’ Day, whether it be breakfast in bed, a simple I love you or the doing the dishes without being asked. Keep that in mind this May, as we wish all the beautiful mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day.

We meet Horticulturist Mick O’Brien and Alethea O’Brien Venardos - owners of Profound Horticulture
As our nation prepares to head to the ballot box to re-elect our Prime Minister, I decided to cleanse my mind of the political noise and return to nature by visiting with one of our most connected local human beings. If you are a fanatical reader of the Independent Newspaper, The Local – Island and Surrounds, you may recognise my guest. Mick O’Brien and his wife, Alethea operate the local Horticultural Business, Profound Horticulture. Mick is ‘The Local’ Gardening Writer – you can find his articles under the Gardening Section.

a few, have kept us all on our toes but I think the industry in general is turning back to focussing on the soil health- with regenerative agricultural practices and sustainable gardening strategies while focusing on organic principles, products and produce for a healthy life and the trying to preserve the environment. What are the top 2 questions you get asked as a Horticulturist? Can you diagnose this plant- pest or disease?
Can you just take charge of our garden please? We want somebody who knows what they’re doing! Given you both work in a 7-day business - How do you maintain a healthy relationship?
Good question, communication is the key, Ali & I are always open and honest with each other, we go on regular picnics and walks through the rainforest to connect more to nature and each other. What was the greatest challenge that you have faced in your life?
Hmmm, ok next question. On introspection, I guess- would be when I realised that being happy doesn’t mean you have to be a successful millionaire (which I am not), the challenge is to live simply, humbly and to treasure your health, and have gratitude for what you have, without being unduly influenced by the material possessions of this world we live in! Mick is a avid writer as well Without exception, I meet some extraordinary people in these Close Encounters Stories. I was privileged to be invited into the inner sanctum of the ‘Profound Horticultural’ home of Mick and Alethea. We sat on the balcony together for a few hours enjoying a home-made cappuccino to talk everything garden, family, meditation, food and Greek Island Holidays. When you ask what the world of Horticulture means to Mick O’Brien, Mick says, “My soul is connected to the earth and when I enter someone’s property and garden, my mind is tuned to assess the health of all living things. You can measure the happiness of an environment by looking at the grasses, leaves, soil, flowers, butterflies and surrounds – I am so passionate about helping people vegetate a landscape supported by safe organic horticultural practices.”

Mick and Alethea are a partnership made in Heaven – Mick is the qualified expert Horticulturist and Alethea is the administrative backbone to the business taking care of inquiries, project organisation and her other passion of cooking classic Greek Style Foods.
Mick O’Brien and Alethea O’Brien Venardos Alethea said, “It is important to have an administrative focus on these types of businesses because we receive lots of inquiries for consultations and new projects which require qualification and communication,” she said. “Mick spends most of his time on job sites either hands-on or providing project support to ensure that peoples landscapes, trees and gardens are sustainable. I am fortunate because Mick and I are great communicators. I think my previous hairdressing business background has made us a great team both at home and in business.” Along with his day job, Mick is avid writer, reader and researcher of best practice Horticulture. It seems logical when you hear Mick talk about what constitutes a healthy plant or why we struggle sometimes to find fruit and vegetables with adequate levels of nutrients. Much of Mick’s focus is based on the composition of soils and plant nutrients. Mick said, “You can buy all of these pre-packaged mixes that are sometimes populated with too many nutrients. Where ever possible I will try to provide plants with a sand mix base and add only what a plant needs to thrive,” he said. “It’s the same when it comes to choosing plants. Sometimes an Architect will recommend specific trees and designer plants for a renovation, however in some cases, the plants won’t survive in a particular environment without the need for additional fertilizers and chemicals – something that I steer away from in our modern world.” It’s interesting when you talk to Mick and Alethea about healthy lifestyle and nutrition – the discussion quickly steers toward what we eat and the long-term risks from using commercial chemicals on food crops. Mick believes that education and understanding goes a long way to helping our community understand how we should produce healthy organic produce.
I would like to thank Mick and Alethea for their contribution to this short story – beautiful people. The positive energy is palpable when you sit with people who exude kindness and compassion towards nature and their world.

How do you describe your business?
At Profound Horticultural, we are passionate about gardening. We will bend over backwards to ensure your garden is beautiful, healthy and thriving. We truly are your experts in the field. We are a family business with over 20 years of experience in the horticultural industry We know just about everything there is to know about garden care What do you enjoy mostly about living on Bribie Island?
Living on Bribie Island and being surrounded by water ensures there is always that relaxed easy-going atmosphere with surf beaches, picturesque walks and cycle tracks, being surrounded by the national park and also great boating, fishing and camping spots. Its paradise and we love living here!
What is your main focus of work these days? Well we have always specialised in detailing gardens to look their best over the years which naturally progressed to full garden make-overs from design to implementation, but the main focus now is promoting and using natural fertilisers and products where ever possible. We have developed our own range of fertilisers and soil improvers that assists our sandy soils to become more fertile in time, hold more moisture and also increases the microbial activity at the root zone.
What are the most important personal attributes to working in business? To master your craft and try to be the best you can be. Working with people means frequent contact with potential clients- so, a happy demeanour is essential as is a laser like focus! How has the Horticultural industry changed over the past 20 years?

Ok then- Ummm, I think a lot of people are losing faith in the government with all the broken promises and bad budget management over the years, and it would be great that -“we the people”; actually had an input on decisions that affect our life rather than have decisions made for us whether we like it or not. Perhaps, some new Knights at the round table is in order! How do you maintain knowledge and keep in touch with the industry?
As a qualified Horticulturist, I belong to the Australian Institute of Horticulture which is the peak body for our industry. I attend many gardening shows and learn from what I see and do every day. I guess you must be self-driven to learn everyday in your profession. How do you nurture your mind and relax?
Meditation, when I can, for nurturing the mind during the week and a few beers on the weekend, with friends- to chill out!
If I gave you $50K to travel - Where do you go to escape the world and recover? Ahh that’s easy, The Greek Islands, my wife has family over there too, so I can spend more of your money. Thanks Damian What drives you to get out of bed in the mornings?
My alarm, sorry couldn’t resist. Another day and another job to complete, another customer to satisfy and of course keeping the dream alive, holidays on a Greek Island perhaps with that $50 grand your giving me! Who’s the cook in the house and what inspires your favourite food/s? That would be Alethea, and her inspiration is naturally Greek food of course but whatever the meal, that bulb of garlic always sneaks in somehow! If you were to invite two famous people to dinner at your place – who would they be and why?
The Dalai lama- Because of his obvious spiritual devotion and I would love to engage in conversation for hours on end. Bono from U2- Maybe he could pick up the guitar after dinner
How do you define success?
In a business sense, a thriving business, and happy customers and financial reward, without being a slave to what you have created. Keep the focus and reflect often. Remember how far you come even when the going gets tough!

some months now, and while a quarter of the funds have been pledged, a renewed effort is required to complete the pledge raising process and move into the feasibility stage.
“To reach our goal of opening a Community Bank Branch we need twelve to fifteen active Steering Committee members. We are now in the position of requiring additional members who are well connected in their community and committed to improving the Bribie and surrounds,” Secretary Glenda Sinclair-Gordon said.
At a recent meeting of the current Steering Committee the decision was made to look further afield for committee members, and involve new members from a broader cross section of the wider community. This will ensure the information about the benefits of a Community Bank will reach a wider audience. With renewed commitment, and speaking engagements booked across the area over coming months, the Steering Committee agreed to continue to pursue their goals and widen the territory that the proposed Bank will support.

Beachmere headed for sesquicentenary celebrations When Beachmere resident Karen Wallwork started looking into the 10,000 Steps program and enquired about a sign for a walking trail little did she know it would lead to a book deal and a weekend of community celebrations.
From drafting up a small pamphlet about that walk Karen will soon complete the first draft of a book entitled History of Beachmere – 150 stories in 150 years – Celebrating Community.
New plans are being developed, including a name encapsulating the broader region, and the Committee are calling on people from across the North Moreton region to get involved and keep the idea of a Community Bank alive for the area, ensuring greater benefits can be delivered.
If you are community minded, have skills which are suited to networking and gathering support for projects and want to give back to your community, then a position on the Steering Committee may be for you. I’ve lived in our area for nearly 30 years. It’s where I raised my four boys and worked for a number of years as a teacher aide. Over these years, I’ve loved getting to know the people who make up our community – the mums and dads, the grandmas and grandads, the workers and the businesspeople. I’ve spoken with all of these people, and I’ve listened to them. It’s allowed me to understand just what it is that our community needs to get a fair go.

Today’s Labor Party is not a patch on them.

While the LNP has ripped $2.9 million out of our Caboolture Hospital, I’m working with Labor to invest in our healthcare system. That $2.9 million could have paid for 7,000 outpatient appointments or 4,300 emergency department visits. Labor will reverse the LNP’s cuts, build a $10 million chemotherapy ward, and deliver a muchneeded Urgent Care Clinic for Bribie Island. While the LNP has slashed $25.3 million from local schools across the

Government’s can’t do that, and he knows it.

University education – should be free to all Australian educated students that complete courses in medicine or nursing on the basis they sign a five year contract to work in rural and regional centres after graduation. Nursing should also be returned to training hospitals and not a university.

CIR citizens initiated referendums. The Australian people should have the right to call for a referendum on issues that affect the people of Australia. No government owned asset should be sold without first going to a referendum. These assets are bought with taxation dollars and the citizens of Australia should have the right to have a say in any and all sales of these assets.
I am a family man, a patriot and my aims are to put people before politics. Ethics, Empathy, Equality, Evidence, Engagement and Empowerment should be front and centre in all aspects of public service. Politics has become an exercise in who can shout their opinion the loudest and enough times to get noticed and elected, we as a country deserve to be represented by people that will follow facts and evidence to find innovative solutions to the problems we face.

The Power of Networking
You meet people all the time. Attend formal networking functions. Join groups. Connect on LinkedIn. Maybe even become friends on Facebook. Yet somehow, the connections are just not working the way you want them to.
Referrals Benefits
Referrals are a privilege awarded when you are an authentic networker. With a strong and authentic network, you have a powerful tool. These are people you can turn to in your times of need. But, not until you’ve built a solid foundation of trust.
You’ve exchanged business cards, and got lots of ”connections”, but still, something seems to be missing. Building an Authentic Network
What is frequently overlooked is that networking is all about nurturing and maintaining connections. It is not enough to just use a speedy few moments to get out your elevator pitch. To build an authentic network, you need to do more than just an exchange of business cards. Business cards are not the be all and end all. What is important is knowing how you can contact the person you are talking to and remembering some key points about them. Things like – what do you have in common? Do they have a problem you could help them with? Can you introduce them to someone who could be of value to them?
DO NOT just give them your card and hope they’ll get in touch. That is not networking – it’s more like a face to face letterbox drop.
Networking is something that is ongoing. It needs to be valued, nurtured and actively worked on. If you struggle with networking drop me a line and I’ll be happy to send you a tip sheet.
Nurturing Connections
You need to nurture your connections. Offer support and help where you can, with no expectation of gain. When you next turn up to a networking function be sure that you’re ready to create and maximise all opportunities. You never know who you will meet!

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence on Bribie With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can take steps towards learning daily living skills and gaining independence. The process may be a gradual one, and may require effort, time and energy, but age is certainly no barrier to learning.
Starting slowly and proceeding step by step is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disability can be encouraged to choose their own friends because the process of doing so supports their personal development and helps them get more involved with the community.
That is where services like Bribie Respite & Support Services come in. We aim to create a safe and secure environment through which young adults with disabilities are able to develop every day skills and form new friendships, gradually becoming more independent and confident along the way. The Bribie Respite Young Adult with Disability Support Services program is run by highly skilled staff and volunteers for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. We offer practical assistance in

developing self-care skills such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning and house hold skills such cleaning and laundry, social skills, practical math’s and money management, travel training and road safety, and dance, drama and sports for confidence and coordination enhancement.
By learning to be more independent, young adults with a disability gain a greater ability to speak up for themselves and choose the life they want. They may even increase their capacity to settle into a home and life of their own. In our experience every step they take to physical, emotional and social independence is beneficial both for them as individuals and for the community. In May, we are introducing a revised cooking program which involves the group selecting menu items, shopping for ingredients, meal preparation and table service. Also on the program are trips to the Ginger Factory, Birthday BBQ in the park, the introduction of sewing classes, reading and math’s groups. All activities that are provided are discussed with the group and the month’s activities are based on what the clients want to be involved in. In June we are hosting another camp which is an activity the whole group loves. We are a registered provider with the NDIS. Queenslanders are being urged to become flu fighters and get vaccinated as soon as possible as the number of influenza cases across the State increases. Across the State more than 9,100 cases of flu have already been confirmed in 2019. Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the high number of people already struck down by flu highlights the importance of annual vaccination. “Our summer flu numbers are the highest they have been in five years,” Mr Miles said. “We had a fairly mild flu season last year with around 15,500 confirmed cases. Our flu numbers this year are already over half that. “While these figures do not necessarily predict the severity of traditional flu season ahead, they are concerning enough to encourage everyone to act now and protect themselves against the flu. “A flu shot is still the best way to avoid getting sick and ending up in hospital.” Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Director Infectious Diseases Unit Dr Krispin Hajkowicz said that in the first three months of this year, Queensland’s public hospital emergency departments have seen 5,998 patients with flu like illness. “We had a horror flu season in 2017 when more than 56,500 Queenslanders were diagnosed with influenza. That number fell in 2018, but flu cases this year are already up on what they were compared with the same time last year,” Dr Hajkowicz said “There could be more cases in the community with people who may not be so sick as to go to the doctor or who may not have been tested. “We’ve seen 2,100 people with flu-like symptoms come through our busy Metro North emergency departments alone.” Dr Hajkowicz said Metro North’s Infection Control Teams have been busy providing free flu jabs to staff, volunteers and QAS staff, with thousands of staff already vaccinated. “We’re on the frontline of the fight against flu and are leading by example. “Our healthcare staff do a terrific job, but additional and sometimes unnecessary presentations in our hospitals during traditionally busy winter months can place an additional strain on resources. “Flu is a serious illness that can lead to complications, particularly in the very young, elderly and people with complex chronic diseases. “It can strike at any time and protection diminishes over time so we encourage everyone to get a flu shot as soon as possible to protect yourself and your family from getting ill and from spreading it to more vulnerable groups like the elderly. “To avoid a trip to hospital, make an appointment with your GP or pharmacist now to ensure your family’s vaccinations are up to date. “It just takes a few minutes of your time and prevents the possibility of becoming very sick if you catch the flu.” Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Metro North Assistant Commissioner Stephen Zsombok said the flu vaccine ensures you’re protecting yourself and your family.
“Historically, we see a strong correlation between the flu season and an increase in demand for QAS services and we’re expecting the same for the 2019 season,” Assistant Commissioner Zsombok said. “It is anticipated the QAS will likely see an increase in demand of between six and 10 per cent in 2019. In recent years this has equated to between 6,000 to 9,000 additional incidents per month in the peak of the flu season.” In Queensland, the flu season is typically from June to September, with a peak around August. The flu vaccine isn’t immediately effective; it generally takes 10 to 14 days to be fully protected after vaccination. The Queensland Government funds a Childhood Influenza Program for all children aged from six months to under five years. Additionally, a Commonwealth-funded free vaccination program is available to eligible people, including: • pregnant women during any stage of pregnancy • people 65 years of age or older • all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people six months of age and older • people six months of age or older who have certain medical conditions which increase the risk of influenza disease complications. All other Queenslanders can purchase the flu vaccine from their doctor or immunisation provider. Fast facts: • Flu is a serious viral illness that mainly affects the upper airways and lungs. It is not the same as a common cold and can lead to serious complications, particularly in the very young, elderly and people with complex chronic diseases. • Flu symptoms usually appear 1–3 days after a person becomes infected. A person can spread flu to others 1–2 days before they become unwell and up to 5 days after symptoms develop. • Typical flu symptoms include fever, cough, muscle aches and pains, nasal congestion, headache, sore throat and fatigue. • Annual vaccination in recommended as different strains of flu virus can change from year to year. This protects you against the most recent flu virus strains that maybe around. Simple tips to prevent the flu include: • See your GP or pharmacist to arrange a flu shot (Hospitals do not provide flu vaccines to the public – do not go to an emergency department for a flu shot) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others; stay at home from work, childcare, school and avoid other crowded areas. This will help protect others from catching your illness. • Wash your hands frequently and properly, which will help protect you from germs that are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Remember wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Dispose of used tissues and wash your hands immediately afterwards. Firstly, while I remember, in case I get side-tracked which is something that I am prone to do, especially if something shiny is passing by, like this amazing motorcycle I saw on the weekend, it was low and loud and… oh hang on that’s not what I’m supposed to be……

So why, after 8 years do I still love Heartbeats and why am I still as passionate about these classes as I was the day I started? Because they do what they are supposed to do! Without hype and whizz bang fancy stuff, although we do use fuzzy balls and squeaking chickens.
When I went searching for a fitness programme that would ensure true health benefits, there was a lot of information out there, but once I really looked into some of it I discovered that a lot of this information just wasn’t “right” or even safe.

Senior Gentle Exercises Circuit Time Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!
Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started!
The exercises below can be done as a circuit combining exercises to rest one area of your body while exercising another. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.
SHOULDER & LEGS
Use a stable chair and water bottles or small hand weights Stand in front of the chair with a weight/bottle in each hand and your thumbs touching. Keeping your thumbs touching lift your hands towards your chin while sticking your elbows out from your body Lower weights down to starting position while keeping your thumbs touching. Repeat 10 times Sit and rest your shoulders and raise one leg at a time extending your lower leg and pointing your toes Repeat 10 times each leg Repeat shoulder exercise again when leg exercise is finished – repeat both exercises 3 times if possible.
FRONT LIFT, SHIN STRENGTHENER, PILES SQUATS
Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Rest a cushion or ball on your legs and lift to shoulder height slowly then return to just above your legs – do not let it rest on your legs Repeat 10 times Rest your arms, keeping your heels on the ground lift your toes toward your body slowly. Lower toes back towards floor slowly – repeat 15 times Stand up from chair and using the back of the chair or a kitchen bench for support stand with your feet as wide as you comfortably can, make sure you are stable on your feet. Squat down as low as you comfortably can without raising your toes or heels from the ground Repeat slowly, only do as many slow squats as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Sit and repeat all exercises 3 times if possible.
FLAMINGOS, BALANCE AND TOES
Flamingo - Stand firmly on one leg and slowly lift your other foot behind you only to the height of your calf – slowly return to the ground and swap legs - Repeat 10 times each leg Arm/Leg raises - Stand firmly on one leg and raise the other leg out to the front while lifting the opposite arm as high as you comfortably can – slowly bring back to start and swap sides – Repeat 10 times each leg/arm Toeing The Line – slide each foot slowly to the front and place heel against your other foots toes. Try not to step – slide, keeping in as straight a line as possible. Continue for 10 slides each foot Repeat all three exercises 3 times if possible.
CLOCK REACH AND SIDE LEG RAISES
Stand behind a stable chair or beside a kitchen bench Clock Reach - Use the chair for balance with one hand and lift one foot off the floor. Standing on one leg swing your arm backwards and forwards while keeping your body still 15 times Swap leg and arms and repeat 15 times Side Leg Raise - Balance with both hands on back of chair and lift one leg out to the side slowly. Make sure your body stays completely still and doesn’t “counterbalance” your leg.

But if you are active and exercise regularly, you can reduce this loss or delay it right through to your late 70’s, 80’s and beyond. Science tells us that exercise is needed to keep your muscles and heart strong allowing you to remain independent longer, and that without regular exercise you are far more likely to fall and need more help in your daily life. Yet, when people find out I’m a Personal Trainer, they usually say “How do I lose weight?” or they say “ohhhh! Honestly I never usually eat this double-chocolate-caramel-creamsprinkle-coated-toffee-drizzled-donut” yeah right, that’s not what your belly and thighs are telling me. Please!!! Realise that being fit is not only about weight loss, and age is not a reason why you can no longer exercise. Exercising is about having strong bones and not needing help to get dressed. Yes, Exercise helps you play sport or lose weight, but it also will help you go places and do things you might have dreamed about doing your whole life.
I get really grouchy when I hear that someone shouldn’t do something because of “their age”. Age really doesn’t have a lot of bearing on fitness, yes exercise should definitely be appropriate for the person, but not age appropriate it should be fitness appropriate!!!

What is important is if she has any injuries that may stop her from performing some exercises, and yes there are some exercises that she shouldn’t do, just like there are some that I don’t do, and some that my 25 year old male client doesn’t do, because Every Body is different!
I know I’ve raved about this before but we need to lose the fitness catch phrase and replace it with Independence-ness or I Can Do Anything-ness, because that’s what exercise give you. Independence, strength, confidence, stability and most importantly happiness. Exercise gives you the ability to do more than star jump, it will give you the ability to age long, age well and age happy.
I get a huge amount of pleasure when I see my clients gaining their I Can Do Anything-ness. Watching those star jumps made me ridiculously happy, because I know that they make my client happy. When I consider how this lifestyle has changed me and my happiness and I’m forever grateful that I made that choice the day I started. So are you struggling to get up off the sofa and slowly losing muscle and strength while struggling to reach your feet? Well it’s never too late to start! Never! If you start moving now you can remain independent, become stronger and happier and in a couple of months you might be showing off your star jumps to your 50 year old children on your birthday.
I looked out my window just 3 days ago and watched one of our wonderful clients complete 30 star jumps in 45 seconds. No big deal for someone of her fitness, she is strong, capable and very active. The fact that she turned 86 today proves her fitness isn’t about

WHY EVERYONE FALLS IN LOVE WITH
Europe conjures up imagery of still rivers, glass lakes and snow- capped mountains. It is no wonder then that certain places endear themselves to travellers for those reasons and more.
The older generation will remember Czechoslovakia and the countries checkered past. At the time of World War I it was known as the Austro Hungarian Empire encompassing Bohemia and Moravia. Czechoslovakia broke into two countries in 1993 which seemed inevitable with Slovakians and the Czechoslovakians not seeing eye to eye both politically and economically. So as travellers we now have two stunning countries to visit. The romance of Prague began around the time of the Palaeolithic Age. It is said that a princess married a common ploughman to fulfil a prophecy for the future. This quote seems to show that she indeed did see the magic or dreamt of the future for Prague. ‘I see a vast city, whose glory will touch the stars! I see a place in the middle of a forest where a steep cliff rises above the Vltava River. There is a man, who is chiselling the threshold (prah) for the house. A castle named Prague (Praha) will be built there,’ she envisioned. For some it is a fairy-tale land with spires and goblins, crystal chandeliers and statues of a bygone era. Today Prague is still noted for incredible Marionettes depicting the past and the present. The puppet (bringing wood to life) theatre dates back to the 17th century. Marionettes tell stories of imps and brave knights, princesses and demons and still entertain children and adults alike the world over.

Prague City Prague is also home to the ‘Good King Wenceslas’ Christmas carol written somewhere around 950. Who knew it was that old – the feast of Stephen and the snow laying round about. Wenceslas is buried in the Chapel of St Vitas Cathedral, a stunning testimony to the gothic Romanesque architecture of the time. Prague Castle emanates a sense of history as it proudly stands above the banks of the Vltava River. Built around 880, it is one of the largest castles in the world. Look hard enough and you might see horses riding through the hall. The city flourished under the reign and we came up with a raffle to raise funds for the people of Winton.

That way the money circulates to support not only locals who receive the help, but also local workers, businesses who supply the goods and services, and ultimately Winton. “I was blown away by the generosity of Beachmere businesses and Beachmere residents who purchased the raffle tickets and donated so willingly”. “As a birthday … it’s been great,” Rhonda said.

Ratepayers to fight council
It is a sad day when ratepayers are forced to take court action against council decisions because it is the only course of action left to ensure that the elected council protects its citizens from harm. The case in point is the failure of Moreton Bay Regional Council to protect its citizens from oppressive and health-damaging noise from concerts at Sandstone Point Hotel. Council has recently approved a further increase of an additional three outdoor rock concerts from 9 to 12 per year, with no relief from the noise and traffic chaos that these events cause. The original application was for a “neighbourhood hotel” with “occasional outdoor events”. The latest council decision, announced on 29 March 2019 despite hundreds of written objections, has prompted the formation of Pumicestone Area Noise Abatement Group [PANAG] - formed to support an appeal to the Planning and Environment Court against the council's decisions. Ken Park, President of PANAG, commented: “Despite the terrible noise effects of these concerts for two years, and the hundreds of complaints and objections, OUR council has now approved a further three concerts each year with no reduction in the noise levels. Also, with recent events attracting more than 13,000 people, the majority of whom drive to the venue causing extensive traffic congestion, there has been no improvement to traffic management. The thumping of the amplified base instruments –hour after hour, up to 10.00 pm at night, makes life in the surrounding neighbourhoods completely intolerable. The zoning of the area which includes the hotel does not allow such noise, but the council has still chosen to approve the Development Applications. Residents, many of whom are retired people seeking
mechanical timepiece in good order will result in Prague suffering some downfall. The calendar dial was added in 1490. Three councillors, including the Mayor were absent and four of those in attendance declared perceived conflicts of interest with the applicant David Comiskey, which prevented them from voting on the application. As a quorum was then not available to vote, the decision was delegated to the council’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr Park said: “This is not the first time this has happened. It is unbelievable that the council that we elected to govern and to make decisions that reflect the best interests of ratepayers is incapable of doing its job. A message from Eric Sheilds Candidate for Mayor
Hi folks and welcome to another of my posts on what Policies I wish to introduce if elected to Mayor of Moreton Bay. Today I wish to cover; •Better Government Relationships •Widening of Bribie Road For most of my voting life like most people, I’ve never understood why our politicians at the different levels of Government can’t work more closely together for the benefit of the general community. We all pay taxes, we all vote and we’re all Australian citizens, so why the problems when it comes to getting things done, the answer of course is Politics, and the community needs usually takes second place. I hope to change that. My thoughts are this, for many years now the community has been screaming for something to be done to improve the traffic congestion in and out of Bribie Island and there is no doubt that Bribie Island is fast
becoming a major tourist area and we badly need to widen Bribie Island Road as quickly as possible for the future. I know residents are also angry at the congestion, I see them complaining about it all the time. I can’t think of one project right now that is more important than improving the traffic flow on Bribie Island Road, it will have an enormous effect on our local economy with visitors coming and going and this in turn will see an increase in jobs and small business around the Bribie Island area. This will mean a joint effort between both the MBRC and also the State Government and from what I’ve seen and read, the community wants this project done as quickly as possible. It will be a priority for me to get this project done during my term if elected to Mayor. I also want to let the community know that any future infrastructure or developments that is planned for Moreton Bay will be scrutinized more closely and developers will be held accountable for any developments they wish to pursue which need the infrastructure put in place first before approval is given, there won’t be any concerns for “conflict of interest” under my watch, everything will be done openly and with clear public knowledge, consultation and understanding. Calling out the Liberals’ unfair 2019 Budget After six years of LNP cuts and chaos, and mere weeks before an election, this Budget was Scott Morrison’s last chance to reverse his cuts to the services that everyday Australians rely on. Instead, it locked in cuts to local schools, hospitals, and apprenticeships and training. Our community was completely overlooked in their Budget, too - there wasn't a single cent of new infrastructure funding for 2019. But, what makes it that much worse, is that the
Liberals have used a $1.6 billion underspend on the NDIS to fund their Budget. The decision to hold the NDIS to ransom so that the Liberals can continue to side with the top end of town isn’t just unfair - it’s wrong. I’ve been calling on the Government to rethink their priorities and I hope they listen. I hope they listen when they hear Labor’s plan to bring back a fair go for regular Aussies, like you and like me.
Sticking up for our community with positive policies In contrast to the Liberals’ disappointing Budget, I’m proud to supporting our community with Labor’s suite of positive policies that really set us apart. Despite the out-of-touch Liberals siding with the top end of town, Labor is prioritizing a fair go for regular Aussies. While the Liberals are ripping $2.9 million out of Caboolture Hospital, Labor is putting the money back where it belongs and delivering a $17 million Urgent Care Clinic for Bribie Island. And where the Liberals are cutting millions out of local schools, Labor is investing in our kids. Labor’s plan is comprehensive and shaped by community consultation. A Different Easter

I remember my first Easter in the remote Kimberley. I’d been camping with friends the previous week, then driven home to Noonkanbah alone. All other teachers were away as were most of the Aboriginal families - the usual exodus to town or to the coast.
I’d be alone all Easter Sunday, but I didn’t mind that. I could go for a swim in the river, where there would be people to talk to. However, most of the day was spent attaching a disposable gas cylinder to my new little lamp. I must have done something wrong because gas started to pour out of a hole I punctured. Fortunately, it wasn’t lit at the time but to be safe I placed the cylinder in the middle of the road outside my camp to let the gas escape. Then, with much fear and following the instructions carefully this time, I connected my new lamp to the gas cylinder again. It worked! After that I moved on to my fridge and managed to get that going too. It had been turned off while I was away, to save the bottled gas.
I reveled in my sense of independence. I had a cold fridge, a lamp that worked, and there was water in the hose. That night I would treat myself to the fresh fruit and chocolate Easter eggs I’d bought in the Derby supermarket. Billie, father of four school kids, appeared holding out the school keys. ‘Did you have a good trip?’ he asked. ‘Any photos?’
I enjoyed sharing them with Billie until his smile vanished. ‘Grasshoppers ate all the school trees’, he said softly. Almost apologetic. There was more. The pumpkins, zucchinis, beans, the basil bush, the coral tree and the spinach were all gone. What could I say? Everyone in the school had
Katarina Carroll appointed Queensland Police Commissioner Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced Katarina Carroll is Queensland’s new Police Commissioner.
The current Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner takes on her new role in July. “This is a proud day for the Commissioner and for Queensland,” the Premier said. “She has worn the uniforms of two branches of our emergency services and stood by us in our toughest times, including Cyclones Debbie and Marcia not to mention the 2018 bushfires. “When our police go to work each day, they willingly put themselves in danger to keep us safe. “Katarina is one of those people with that special courage and community spirit. “Now I am asking her to keep all of us safe and to guide our police service. “I know police and our state are in good hands.” Commissioner Carroll started her career

My Easter was as ruined as the school garden! Everything had been perfect before Billie came.
I wanted revenge. Weren’t chocolate coated grasshoppers a delicacy in some countries - or was that some other insect? It might be Easter, I thought, but being dipped in hot chocolate was too good a punishment for them. What could I do to make myself feel better? I opened the fridge and removed an Easter egg. Then I lit my lamp. Suddenly insects invaded! Black beetles and flying ants swarmed around the light and then moved on to my head, getting in my eyes and ears. When I opened my mouth to curse them, they flew into that too!
That was the last straw. For some reason I began to chuckle at the thought of chocolate coated insects. Get over it, I told myself. Look at the fading sunset. Eat your egg. Eat two. Or three! Then go and have a shower. I walked down the road to the public shower (I had no bathroom of my own). On the way back I could hear someone playing a guitar. There was laughter in the distance. I passed Billie’s house. His family were cooking yabbies’ on an outside fire. Billie’s wife played a guitar as she sang a slim Dusty song. All the family joined in. ‘Teacher,’ Billie called. ‘Come here. We’ve got plenty yabbies’ for you.’ It was a good Easter after all.

She is Queensland’s 20th Police Commissioner and the first woman to fill the role in the service’s 159-year history. “The pride I felt the day I first pulled on that blue shirt has never left me,” Commissioner Carroll said. “To now lead this group of men and women is humbling.”

Community uproar over bird deterrents on Bribie Bridge State Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson said she is wanting answers on why the Department of Transport and Main Roads installed metal bird deterrents on the Bribie Island Bridge this week, leaving the pelicans without a place to roost. “The pelicans are gone now, and this is a crying shame for our community who loved seeing them atop of the lights, welcoming all to the Island, “Mrs Wilson said. Mrs Wilson has called the Minister for Transport and Main Road, Mark Bailey’s office today seeking an explanation as to why the deterrents were installed without community consultation and under the cover of darkness. “These bird deterrents were installed by stealth earlier this week and no one saw it coming”, Mrs Wilson said. “It has taken our community by total surprise and we want our pelicans returned “These are our mascots and they are a real attraction for visitors coming onto the bridge “My community is outraged by what has occurred here and so am I”, Mrs Wilson said. “I have been trying to get answers from Transport and Main Roads since this came to my attention earlier this week, however I am yet to receive a reply “I have taken this issue to the Minister’s office to intervene as I want this
situation rectified and the pelicans to return to their safe roost “Bribie Island is a flora and fauna sanctuary and our pelicans were much loved and protected by our community”, Mrs Wilson said. Since being the Member for Pumicestone, Mrs Wilson said she has received only one complaint in late 2018 regarding pelican droppings on a vehicle travelling along the bridge. “As part of my duty of care I reported this to TMR at that time and their response was that nothing would be done to deter the pelicans which I agreed with “So, what has changed since then? Why were deterrents installed by stealth and what is TMR prepared to do to return the pelicans to their roost without risk to motorists and pedestrians on the bridge? “Instead of placing metal rods to keep the pelicans away, TMR could have extended a place for the Pelicans to roost over the water away from vehicles and pedestrians”, Mrs Wilson said. TMR and the Minister for Transport and Main Road’s office is yet to respond to Mrs Wilson.

Green light for Caboolture intersection upgrades
A major $5.33 million upgrade for two of Caboolture’s busiest intersections is now complete. The Palaszczuk Government has finished works on upgrading the Beerburrum Road and Industry Drive intersection and Beerburrum Road and Pumicestone Road intersection, which connect Caboolture’s CBD with the D’Aguilar Highway, the popular Queensland State Equestrian Centre, historical village and showgrounds.
Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said following a number serious crashes at the intersections, the Palaszczuk Government had prioritised building new turning lanes, traffic islands and pedestrian crossings to improve safety.
“Before the upgrade, the majority of crashes at these intersections were caused by motorists trying to find gaps in traffic when attempting to turn right,” Mr Ryan said.
“We’ve widened the both intersections, built new dedicated right turn lanes, and modified the timing of the traffic lights so vehicles can safely turn right. “As popular area for families heading onto the D’Aguilar Highway, QSEC, the Sunday markets and the historical village, it’s critical we deliver safer intersections.”
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project also included relocating the northbound Pumicestone Road railway pedestrian crossing, realigning and improving the road surface and footpaths, and reshaping and relocating traffic islands.
“These upgrades are funded under the Palaszczuk Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, which improves road safety and focuses on implementing high-benefit, costeffective solutions to prevent crashes and incidents on Queensland roads,” Mr Bailey said. The Beerburrum Road and Industry Drive intersection upgrade has been delivered as part of the $28.8 million Morayfield Road and Beerburrum Road Route Safety Project.
Action on Australian 4WD Hire Welcomed
State Member for Clayfield Tim Nicholls has welcomed news today that the ACCC has started court action against Smart Corporation Pty Ltd trading as Australian 4WD Hire. “Today’s news is a welcome development and has come about as a result of the persistence and hard work of a group of victims who have in my view been ripped off by the actions of this company over a long period,” he said. “Last June, I revealed the practices of Australian 4WD Hire in Parliament and described them as “unscrupulous, unfair, fraudulent and quite possibly illegal activities that affect many Australians as well as foreign tourists”. “It seems the ACCC agrees with me.
“Now the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken action on these claims and is seeking, amongst other things, banning orders against Fleet Manager and former bankrupt Vitali Roesch and company director Maryna Kosukhina.

drives rise in calls to Helpline The number of calls to the Palaszczuk Government-funded Elder Abuse Helpline increased by more than 17 percent during the 2017-18 financial year, with more than 1900 Queenslanders reporting elder abuse over those 12 months.
The figures make up part of the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit’s Year in Review report, which was released this week. Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke said the increase in calls was a sign that the Palaszczuk Government’s elder abuse awareness campaigns were working.
“This is the largest annual increase in elder abuse notifications since the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit began collecting this data in 2000-01,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
“We believe this isn’t necessarily a reflection of an increase in the incidence of elder abuse, but rather that it reflects an increased awareness of this long under-reported issue within the community. “This report represents the most comprehensive data on elder abuse in the state and is a clear indication that awareness campaigns such as those run by the Palaszczuk Government and the Queensland Law Society are getting the message across that elder abuse won’t be tolerated.” The data also shows that the most common forms of elder abuse reported were financial abuse (1511 calls) and psychological abuse (1207 calls). More than half of victims were aged 80 years or above, with the highest proportion of victims aged between 80 and 84 years old.
The Elder Abuse Prevention Unit receives $757,204 funding from the Palaszczuk Government to operate the Elder Abuse Helpline in the 2018/19 financial year.
Mrs O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to responding to, raising awareness of and reducing elder abuse. “There are other forms of abuse, such as sexual abuse, which may be underreported and I encourage people to report these,” she said. “Our seniors make a valuable contribution to communities across Queensland, and they deserve to live free from abuse.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman visited the campus today and inspected the health training facilities. “We want to make sure Queenslanders have access to world class training facilities,” Ms Fentiman said. “The Palaszczuk Government is investing $700,000 to improve nursing and aged care clinical training spaces.” “The modernisation of C block will involve a redesign of the nursing practical spaces to provide an extra five bed ward, a learning area, an observation and viewing room.
“The teaching space will simulate interactive mini hospital wards, similar to the upgrades approved for Pimlico, Toowoomba and Loganlea TAFE Queensland campuses in 2018-19. “More than 800 students annually will benefit from the upgrade at the Caboolture campus which will also allow for new courses to be offered.
“The Jobs Queensland Anticipating Future Skills report showed health care and social assistance were the top industries predicted to grow with a 20% increase in nursing to 2022. “And at the Caboolture campus, the Diploma of Nursing is the most popular course and there has been a 14% increase in enrolments in the past year.
“In December last year we doubled the subsidy for Diploma of Nursing to make it $4,000 cheaper for eligible students to gain this valuable qualification. Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan welcomed the upgrades to the health training facilities for the Caboolture region. “The upgrade will enhance the educational delivery of all of these courses through state-of-the-art equipment that mirrors hospital facilities,” Mr Ryan said.
“The upgrade will also assist with preparing a workforce for the roll out of the NDIS in the Caboolture area, which began in January this year.”

“The Morrison Liberal National Government in Canberra have continued to build on their more than $3 billion in cuts to skills and training with their latest budget,” Ms Fentiman said. “The Budget delivered $525 million with one hand, but snatched away $649 million with the other.” “Scott Morrison’s so-called Skills Package was actually a cuts package of more than $120 million. “We are going backwards in training in skills under the LNP at a time we should be surging forward.”
“LNP cuts are in stark contrast to Federal Labor, who will commit $1 billion towards TAFE and apprentices through 100,000 free TAFE places nationally, incentives for 150,000 additional apprentices and $200 million for TAFE infrastructure. “This is a true partnership – something we never see from the LNP.”
Unemployment gets worse across Moreton Bay under Labor, Tim Mander MP Says. The Moreton Bay North region* is in the midst of an unemployment disaster, following the release of new data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This is about investing in the services that people need here when you live in an island community. Origins of Anzac Day remembered on UNESCO World register A rare book that put Anzac Day on the national calendar has been added to the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World register. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the book, being held by the State Library of Queensland, details how the origins of Anzac Day began in Queensland at the first meeting of Queensland’s Anzac Day Commemoration Committee. “It contains the minutes of that first meeting in which it was agreed to hold an Anzac Day march on 25 April 1916,” Ms Enoch said. “More than 57,000 Queenslanders enlisted in the First World War with many more being involved at home on some level. “This book is of great importance as we continue to commemorate Anzac Day and pay tribute to the thousands of Australians who served in military operations, helping future generations understand their experiences during and after the First World War. “This worthy addition to the register will inspire Australians to access the State Library’s collections to learn more about Queensland’s history.” State Librarian and CEO Vicki McDonald said the State Library was honoured to have these precious minutes placed on the UNESCO
Australian Memory of the World Register. “As custodian of Queensland’s collective memory we are uniquely positioned to share the incredible stories of our state’s past and present,” Ms McDonald said. “State Library holds a wealth of First World War material, but this minute book is one of a kind. “The Anzac Day Commemoration Committee was the only organisation nationally committed to developing and promoting a template for Anzac Day observance. “Aside from its national significance, the minute book is a rich resource for researchers, historians and hobbyists, with a digitised version available online for anyone to view through State Library’s catalogue.” The minute book joined other items from the State Library of Queensland collection already in UNESCO’s register: • Margaret Lawrie Torres Strait Island Collection - stories from the Torres Strait Islands, genealogical information on many Torres Strait Island families, slides and photographs, artworks, and research material • Manifesto of the Queensland Labour Party, 1892 - a handwritten foundation document of the Queensland Labour Party (this is also inscribed on the International Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World) • The Convict Records of Queensland 1825–1842 - records that document the penal settlement at Moreton Bay • James Tyson Papers - surviving records the creator of one of Australia’s greatest pastoral empires.

Feedback sought on changes to construction industry long service leave scheme The Palaszczuk Government is seeking feedback on proposed changes to construction industry portable long service leave levy arrangements aimed at ensuring the scheme’s long-term financial viability.
Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the building and construction industry portable long service leave scheme, which is administered by QLeave, ensures workers can accrue long service leave even if they change employers or work interstate. “The scheme is funded by a levy based on building project costs, with similar portable long service leave schemes in other states,” Ms Grace said.
“It is one of three levies collected under the Building and Construction Industry (Portable Long Service Leave) Act 1991. The other levies are a building and construction industry levy and a workplace health and safety levy. “In 2014, the Newman Government made changes to the scheme, which have significantly compromised the financial viability of the scheme.”
The Newman LNP Government introduce a tiered levy structure with discounted rates for projects over $1 billion and no levy payable on projects over $5 billion. These changes excluded GST from the leviable cost and reduced the levy rate from 0.3% to 0.25%. Ms Grace said the changes made by the previous Government had reduced the scheme by $91.3 million between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2018.

Labor is all talk and no action on health crisis
Says Ros Bates, Shadow Health Minister LNP Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates has called on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to get serious about fixing hospitals. Ms. Bates said Annastacia Palaszczuk and her embattled Health Minister Steven Miles have no plan. “Our hospitals are bursting at the seams, ramping has sky-rocketed, regional maternity wards have been shut and code yellow has become the new norm,” Ms Bates said. “As a former Emergency Department nurse, I know how stressful it can get. “Under-resourced staff are working ridiculous hours and are getting absolutely no support from the Palaszczuk Labor Government. “What’s more frightening is the amount of serious assaults on paramedics, doctors and nurses. “Violence in our hospitals has exploded since Annastacia Palaszczuk became Premier. “Staff don’t deserve to be treated like punching bags. “These statistics are damning and it’s clear something needs to be done to address the issue. “A few videos created from the Health Minister’s department doesn’t cut it. “It’s just more talk and no action from this arrogant government. “Only the LNP is committed to investing in our hospitals because we believe Queenslanders deserve a world-class health system no matter where they live. “Under Labor our hospitals are being left to rot. “Their number one priority for the health system was wasting taxpayers’ money on changing a hospital name in Brisbane.” “The Government is proposing to restore the scheme to its former fairer structure, ensuring its longer-term financially sustainability,” she said. “We want to hear from everyone who has been or will be affected by any changes to the scheme.”
Public comment is also being sought from industry stakeholders on support for a small increase in the workplace health and safety levy to enhance support for mental health and suicide prevention in the building and construction industry. “Tragically, suicide rates in the building and construction industry are much higher than in other industries, particularly amongst younger workers who are two to three times more likely to take their own lives than other Australians,” Ms Grace said.
“In August 2018 the Palaszczuk Government announced additional funding of $1 million to help Mates in Construction expand its suicide prevention program to rural and remote areas of the state. “A 0.005 per cent increase in the work health and safety levy would provide long-term funding certainty for suicide prevention and mental health programs in the construction industry at minimal cost.”

Understanding stamp duty
Stamp duty is part and parcel of buying property in Australia. But it’s also a tax that few buyers understand. What is stamp duty? Stamp duty is a form of tax. It is applied to a number of transactions, including transfers of property, mortgages and motor vehicle registrations. It can also be imposed on some insurance and gifts, the transaction is charged, with the amount based on the greater of the market value of the property or the price paid, including any GST. This means, the more expensive the property, the higher the stamp duty. For new investors or those buying interstate, stamp duty can “slide under the radar” and become a nasty surprise when it’s time to pay. If you are thinking about entering the property market, don’t forget to factor stamp duty into your budget, if you work out how much needs to be paid from the offset, you could save yourself a lot of stress in the long run.

When do you have to pay stamp duty?
Just as the stamp duty rate varies from state to state, so does the timeframe in which people need to pay it. • ACT – payable within 28 days of settlement (purchasers must pay stamp duty within 14 days of receiving a Notice of Assessment from Access Canberra. State governments offer stamp duty exemptions when property changes
Regional rental markets more volatile The regional rental markets have proved the most volatile in the March quarter, with markets such as Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Gladstone making significant moves. This quarter Gladstone has stolen the spotlight with its long-awaited move into the healthy range, tightening from 4.2 per cent to 3.5 per cent, for the first time since December 2012. This market has been gradually improving since it peaked at 11.3 per cent vacancies in March 2016. The inexorable downward trend has consistently suggested an improving market with rental supply and demand trends now the closest to intersecting in almost seven years. With this continually improving rental market, it is unusual that the sales market has continued to fall, with the median sale price falling 3.6 per cent in the year to December 2018, to $270,000 and 37.2 per cent below the level of five years ago. We will watch and wait to see how this market develops. The Townsville market was the biggest mover of the quarter, although this is very much expected with the floods removing a significant proportion of the rental stock. This market moved from a weak 4.3 per cent to a very tight 1.5 per cent. It’s important to understand that the market was steadily tightening before the floods occurred. The vacancy rate peaked at 7.1 per cent in the September 2016 quarter and since then has been trending downwards. As a result of this tightening market we were already starting to see rents push up in late 2018. Our forecast for the Townsville market hands following a death or divorce, or is transferred between family members. And most state governments also offer first-home buyers either a complete exemption or a large concession. For example, the New South Wales state government offers a full exemption to first-home buyers on homes valued up to $650,000. Meanwhile, Victoria offers a full exemption to first-home buyers who purchase a new or established home worth up to $600,000, as long as they live in the property for at least 12 months, and stamp duty discounts to those who buy property valued between $600,000 and $750,000. How do you pay stamp duty? State governments generally accept payments online, via credit/debit card or bank transfer. Some also accept payment via cheque. What is the money used for? Stamp duty is invested into the economy by the state and territory governments which collect it. This revenue is added into all state government budgets, which typically cover sectors such as health, transport and roads, police, justice and emergency services.

This market has delivered consistent vacancy rates since June 2017, with results ranging from 2.2 to 2.8 per cent for about eight quarters. Outer Brisbane 2.0% (no change) The combined Outer Brisbane regions of Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and Redland is tight, at 2.0 per cent. Moreton Bay 1.7% (down 0.3 percentage points from 2.0%) This market is one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland, according to ABS data, with rapid population growth filling out areas such as North Lakes and Kallangur. While there is a steady stream of supply coming onto the market in the form of house-and-land packages, it is not necessarily making it onto the rental market, making conditions tight. Redland 1.7% (up 0.1 percentage points from 1.6%) The Redland market is hanging onto its tight status and vacancies have not moved much in six months. This is a very busy market and local agents tell us that tenants are keen to sign longer leases and stay put.

Many parents and older people state that youth and technology is a bad mix and that it is overused and unnecessary. Whilst in some circumstances this statement rings true, many uses of technology are yet unknown but will be amazingly beneficial for people of all ages. People give the youth of today a bad rap. This could be caused by the small minority who seemingly spend their days addicted to online gaming; always chasing the next win. This addiction is all that the adults see – a creature that steals away their teenagers and disengages them from their family and friend and hides them behind locked doors and computer screens into all hours of the night.
It may come as a surprise to many people however, that not all children are just consumers of technology. Many tech savvy teens can debug issues and fix cruxes faster than their parents can make a call to their local computer tech store for help. They can create new technology for the future that includes intricate coding learnt through working collaboratively with others - as it is
known teaching something to someone else helps you consolidate your knowledge and help others, which needs to happen to advance the technology in the world even further.
With the technological advancement of our world occurring at such an alarmingly rapid rate, we need to be able to keep up to ensure that we don’t get left behind. If we don’t encourage youth to take the lead and develop their skills, we risk missing important breakthroughs and hinder advancement. We need to recognise and cultivate the skills and creativity of our youth and give them permission to learn and to lead. Students in the classrooms of today are building and programming robots, prototyping, wire framing and coding apps that can be used in the real world. They are using technology to interact with classrooms across the other side of their schools, their states, their countries and their world. At the touch of a button they can talk to experts in their fields and enhance their learning to places never thought possible. They can access virtual and augmented reality to bring learning to life in front of them. Students possess the skills to manipulate technology and have the ability to use these skills to advance our world. The world has moved in leaps and bounds in the past thirty years, and I attribute this to the creation and widespread adoption of computers, the internet and technology. While it may seem that we all have lost our human connection with the rise of gaming etc, we have gained so much more and can we can undoubtedly turn to our tech savvy youth to lead the way towards the future.

It is undeniable that Reality TV shows are rising in popularity - thousands of people tune in every episode for their daily drama fix. With so many people being influenced by these shows we must pose the question, is it really that good for us? Love them or hate them, reality TV series’ like Married at First Sight and Bachelor in Paradise are taking off all over the world. A common theme observed in many television dramas shows people getting caught up in risky or uncommon situations. One of the reasons people love this specific type of drama is that they can experience dicey scenarios with zero consequences. Whether it’s a couple breaking up, a man sleeping with snakes or someone getting grilled by Ramsey himself, they all pose no threat to the audience, effectively giving you an adrenaline rush without the fear. Countless people believe watching these TV shows makes one ignorant of the numerous consequences that could befall them when replicating these actions in a real-life situation.
Something reality TV has in its favour is its ability to give those who watch it a deeper understanding of the inner workings behind social interactions and relationships. The more mistakes we make, the more we learn. This is repeated to us all throughout school and during our early lives, but what if we didn’t have to be the ones who make the mistakes?
The audience can use what they’ve seen on these shows effectively as a “what not to do list” in their own social lives. Another positive of reality TV is that it is bringing us back from that uncaring brink. Watching real people aspire to some goal, and then seeing all but one or two of them fail, sensitises us once again to the pains and pleasures of our fellow human beings. Whether it is cheering for the Bachelor to propose or for Sam to cook the best dish on Masterchef.
Like most things, reality TV has its positives and negatives. It provides an endless source of entertainment, teaches people a little about social interactions and can satisfy people’s needs for perilous activity. On the other hand, reality TV can be considered too easy to sink innumerable hours into and can create false views regarding society encouraging people to put “reality” life before real life.

How often do we hear claims that our youth today are not like we were? A quote from Socrates – some 2500 years ago - is still relevant today: “The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.” And, the ancient Athenians didn’t have social media! We cannot always build the future for our youth, but (perhaps) we can build our youth for the future. The month of May is Youth Services Month in Rotary. It is the month when Clubs around the world focus on youth programs. Rotary Clubs sponsor young people to gain confidence and self esteem and develop their abilities in leadership, debating, communication and road safety/driver awareness. We also have youth programs which assist students who have career goals in the areas of mathematics and science.
The following is a synopsis of Rotary’s 12 Youth Groups and Programs: • Rotaract: bringing together people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service.
• Interact: for young people ages 12-18. Interactors develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Rotary’s motto - ‘Service Above Self’. Members organise at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Our Club is in the process of establishing an Interact Club at Bribie Island State High School. • EarlyAct: a school-wide service club for primary students sponsored by a local Rotary club. The mission and operation are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary. Projects benefit their school, local and global communities. EarlyAct has been successfully running at Bribie Island State School since 2012. • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards – RYLA: a leadership development program for young people aged 18-27 who want to learn new skills, build their confidence, develop leadership, communication and problem solving skills and have fun. Our Rotary District runs a seven day camp at Luther Heights each May.
• Rotary Youth Exchange: a program providing an opportunity for students to learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. The 12 month exchange is for

Youth Future – or Future Youth? students aged 15-19 and is sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.
• Rotary Australia and New Zealand Student Exchange – RANZSE: where Australian and New Zealand students aged 14 to 16, are matched in a 3 month family-to-family exchange between the two countries.
• Rotary Peace Fellowships: an annual selection of up to 100 professionals from around the world, to receive fully funded academic fellowships at our Rotary Peace Centres. Our Club has two Peace Fellows studying at the University of Queensland. • Rotary Youth Driver Awareness – RYDA: a one day program, for students in Year 11. The program targets the attitude and awareness of young drivers and passengers. Thanks to the support of the Rotary Club of Caboolture this program is now available at Bribie Island State High School.
• National Youth Science Forum – NYSF: for Year 11 students passionate about science. NYSF gives an opportunity to visit a variety of Australia’s leading scientific facilities and talk to many of our top scientists thus allowing for informed career choices. This year our Club sent two local students to Canberra. We have one candidate for 2020 and are looking for another. • Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment - RYPEN: providing a group of young people aged 14-17 an opportunity to develop valuable leadership skills. This weekend-long program will see them engage with like-minded people, while having fun and learning new skills in areas such as problem solving and public speaking.
• Model United Nations Assembly MUNA: an annual, weekend event, that is part of an International Rotary project to educate Year 11 and 12 students on the United Nations and its commitment to world peace, health, education and living standards around the world. Our Club has previously taken Bribie Island High School students to Canberra to compete in the National competition and will do so again this August.
• The Science Experience: designed for youth who have an interest in science. The program provides information for Year 9 and 10 students about further studies in science, technology and engineering, highlighting the wide range of careers. So, you can see that Rotary is working to prove that the great Socrates may have got it wrong. Footy stars to show juniors their tricks at inaugural Magic Round
Two weeks out from one of the biggest events on the rugby league calendar, junior footy clubs across Brisbane are set to capitalise when the biggest names in football converge on the River City.
With all 16 of the National Rugby League’s clubs poised to head to Brisbane for the inaugural Magic Round (9 - 12 May), Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones today announced local juniors would get special attention from their sporting idols over the next month. “We’re committed to investing in events that stimulate our economy and support tourism jobs in Queensland – the Magic Round will do just that,” she said. “The Magic Round is the hottest ticket on the NRL’s calendar for 2019 and we’ve worked hard to maximise tourism outcomes for the city from this event. “Ensuring Queensland footy fans benefit from hosting this historic event is important. That’s why we’re making sure local juniors capitalise on this rare opportunity. Ms Jones said each of the eight NRL clubs that are officially playing their ‘home’ game during the Magic Round Brisbane will host community engagement activities – including the Sea Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs, Warriors, Storm, Roosters, Rabbitohs and Titans. “No matter who they support, we want to make sure our youngest footy fans get a chance to meet their idols,” Ms Jones said. “That’s why we’ve worked closely with the NRL to develop a comprehensive program of off-field events - including a huge entertainment line-up and a series of community engagement opportunities involving players.” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the NRL Magic Round Brisbane was set to deliver a family-friendly and affordable weekend of footy and off the field activities to the city. “There will be plenty of free events and community activations to take place off the field, which will help to create a festival atmosphere in the week leading up to the NRL Magic Round Brisbane,” Cr Schrinner said. “NRL Magic Round Brisbane is also helping to drive junior development for Brisbane’s aspiring rugby league players, which will be supported by plenty of community events, school visits and open training sessions where fans will be able to see their favourite team or players up close. “NRL Magic Round Brisbane will be an event like no other, with a major national sporting competition playing an entire round in the one city - cementing our city’s reputation as a destination for blockbuster sport. “Hosting the NRL Magic Round is a win for Brisbane. This will be a truly memorable experience which provides more to see and do in Brisbane, and we welcome this new and exciting event to our city’s rich calendar of events.” NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he was looking forward to the upcoming festivities in Brisbane. “This will be an incredible experience for our game, our players and our fans,” Mr Greenberg said. “Brisbane will be a fantastic host city and I know from speaking with clubs that they are looking forward to greeting their fans – both local and travelling – and spending time within communities. “It’s important that we engage with our fans whenever possible and Magic Round Brisbane will be a perfect opportunity to do so, across an array of communities and junior clubs.”

2019 Australian Heritage Festival Travel back in time and celebrate the history of Moreton Bay through the 2019 Australian Heritage Festival.
Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity Denise Sims said Moreton Bay Region Libraries would celebrate the festival Connecting People, Places and the Past as part of their annual history seminar at North Lakes Community Centre in coming weeks.
“The Australian Heritage Festival brings to life all chapters of Australian culture and history, telling the stories of diverse and distinctive experiences that make up our communities,” Cr Sims said. “This year’s theme is Connecting People, Places and the Past and will feature three local speakers as well as displays from local historical societies in our region.” Cr Sims said the history of South Sea Islanders and the role they played as part of Queensland’s sugar industry would be presented by Cara Downs from the National Archives of Australia.
“We also have this year Dr Jennifer Harrison, a Research Fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at the University of Queensland, who will explore the idea there are many pasts in the past - revisiting stories and memories of the region by connecting history with people and places. “Paul Dielemans, a PhD research candidate at the University of Queensland, will examine the impact Queensland architect Frank Cullen had on the landscape of the Redcliffe Peninsula - focussing on the years after World War II, examining seaside resorts, holiday carnivals and modern Catholic schools.”

Domestic Violence Breaches remain record high in Queensland
New data released by the Queensland Police Service* has once again highlighted the hurt and impact of domestic and family violence across Queensland. In the last 12 months alone there have been over 28,000 breaches in Queensland – an increase of 8.6 per cent. LNP Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Stephen Bennett said it was clear more needed to be done to increase awareness and protect victims.
“Queensland has once again broken its own disgraceful record for the number of domestic violence protection order breaches in a year,” Mr Bennett said. “Domestic and family violence continues to plague Queenslanders every day under this out of touch Labor Government.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to do more to prevent the horrifying rise of domestic and family violence. “Labor’s hopeless approach clearly isn’t working.

Community organisations, school and P&Cs still have time to apply for up to $1,000 in council funding for local road safety initiatives as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Road Safety Grant Program. Mayor Allan Sutherland urged local groups to get in before the May 13 deadline, with innovative ideas on how to improve local road safety. “If you haven’t got your application in and you want to make a difference to your community then jump on board today,” he said. “We’re open to all kinds of ideas from road safety programs for toddlers and seniors, to education for young drivers, or even translating road safety information into other languages. Wicking beds- The upside down- watering system!
These days, the fact that our water bills are sky rocketing may actually discourage some people from growing their own fruit and vegetables, unless they have a water tank or a water bore but the reward from growing your own food knowing that its free from insecticides, harsh chemicals and is also naturally nutritious- runs supreme in my mind. Gardening in small spaces can be a challenge but the benefits from recycling our own kitchen waste by using compost bins or using a worm farm to convert kitchen waste into worm tonics or castings can, not only improve your soils water holding capacity but also activates and feed the beneficial bacteria and fungi that work in a symbiotic relationship with the plants root system. With the design of the Wicking Bed system, you are also conserving water regardless of the local climatic conditions and If you really want to create a healthy soil- vibrant with microbial life, you can try brewing your own microbial brews to reboot your soil which also promotes healthy root systems and is especially beneficial for our lawns, fruits and vegetables. These brews are called (AACT), Actively Aerated Compost Teas- and can also be further researched online. After all this talk about tea, I am off for a cuppa.

Fruits of Labour- Nice healthy tomato pla with ripe fruit. Upon researching the ‘Wicking Bed’ system recently, for a client of mine to offer them some options for growing their own fruits and vegetables at home with minimal water usage (‘Wicking bed’- is a name for a growing system that has a bottom water storage tank which can be accessed by the plant roots system as needed for an uninterrupted supply of moisture and nutrients), I was amazed at the modern designs that are readily available for purchase from within Australia. Also, the name Colin Austin- keeps popping up. As it turns out, Colin Austin is the original inventor of the system in Australia, which has since subsequently inspired hordes of sustainable gardening groups, permaculture organisations and farm producers worldwide. Colin was invited to Africa by World Vision- to see if he could improve sustenance food growing in periodic droughts that cause so much hardship over there, and his systems were tweaked for use in these areas where regular rainfall failed to materialise. For us diehard gardeners back home in Australia that grow vegetables throughout the hot summer months and sometimes find it hard to keep the moisture levels up to your favourite veggie plants, or worse, if the hot winds dry your plants foliage to a cinder and the fruits crack and drop due to excessive moisture stress, then the wicking system, is a good subject to immerse yourself in. I have been on a few garden consultations with some of our long-term Bribie Island residents, who have mentioned to me in passing comments as we walked around their property, “that tree must have found the water table or something”, “it seems to have tripled in size with no apparant care or irrigation”. It’s the exact same principle that the ‘Wicking system’ uses. The top of the plant roots remain dryer, but the bottom roots have ventured into the water reservoir below which created a more robust root system as the plants hydrate themselves through osmotic pressure. I was watching a very informative video last weekend, posted online, by a company called- Soils for life, which specialises in regenerative landscape management practices in Australia. The educational video was a talk by John Feehan, who is a leading dung beetle expert in Australia. https://www. soilsforlife.org.au/videos/john-feehan-dung-beetles, I became fascinated in the role these simple little dung beetles play in sequestering carbon and aerating the soil as they feed on the excrement of cow dung. John Feehan, who also has his own company called - Soil Cam, with his unique web address: www.dungbeetleexpert.com.au, which is pretty much selfexplanatory as the title of his webpage states, he is a leading expert in this field. John Feehan is an entomologist and he was a member of the CSIRO team tasked with introducing bovine dung beetles into Australia, before starting his own company that supplies and redistributes dung beetles worldwide (as our local dung beetles feeding on marsupial droppings were not that efficient on bovine dung in Australia).
Close up flower detail of: Spathoglottis plicata Spathoglottis plicata, is a terrestrial ground orchid that is native to Australia and is also found growing in other tropical and subtropical countries like Asia, Hawaii, Tonga and Samoa. In Australia, its origin hails from Cape York but is readily available to purchase from nurseries locally in South East Queensland. The Examples in the image above, were acquired by my wonderful Clients, Dennis and Nina, on return from a nursery visit around the Caboolture area. We planted them in the height of summer and they already had an abundance of flowers and were also clumping well. At planting, we separated each potted specimen into several more clumps and planted them around a new rock garden and they have continued to grow, flower and multiply magnificently. Most growing labels for these plants attest to these being planted in part shady areas but I have seen many examples tolerate full sun conditions as long the moisture is kept up. Spathoglottis comes from two Greek words (spathe) a flat blade used by weavers and (glotta) the tongue, referring to the shape of the lower lip of the flower, and plicata is from the Latin plicatus, means- folded or pleated, referring to the raised parallel veins on the leaves, which pretty much describes the plants characteristics in the image ‘supplied above’. Spathoglottis plicata, prefers a well-drained soil and flowers from spring to summer and sometimes year-long in warmer areas but may die down in the coldest of climates. These are relatively hardy landscape plants that will always brighten up that rock garden with their beautiful purple flowers which are held up well above their green strappy foliage.

The dung beetle, the mating game begins!
John mentions during the video, that the adult dung beetle can smell fresh dung downwind, from approximately one kilometre away. The beetles fly to the cow paddies, feed for a couple of hours on the left-over protein contained in the dung, then mate and tunnel into the soil profile with neat rolls of manure (depending on the species) which they use as incubating chambers for their young, then the larvae hatch and feed on the dung balls, mature, crawl out as beetles and then fly off to the next cow dung, starting the process all over again. John Feehan goes on to mention that there are approximately 28 million cattle, that can drop up to a half a million tonnes of dung per day, every day in Australia, with each animal dropping up to 12 cow pads a day. For every litre of dung, the beetles scavenge from the soil surface, they also redistribute approximately two kilograms of subsoil back to the surface in its place, ensuring the soil is aerated naturally which also increases the microbial life in time also. John goes on to say in the video, that each location in the country may have different species of dung beetles that breed at different times of the year, but his company can supply the right species of dung beetles that perform the best for local climatic conditions.
It amazes me, when I think of how efficient nature is in recycling organic waste and how important the humble Dung beetle is in aerating the soil and creating microbial activity that might otherwise be a barren land or life less soil. The truly remarkable thing is, how the Dung beetles can turn cow dung into the soil profile within 24 to 72 hours, out competing our bush flies as they will need more time to breed. John even goes as far to say in another video on his website, that in Canberra, 25 years ago and due to hygiene laws, it was illegal for local restaurants to serve food outdoors, due to so many bush flies that would swarm any plate of food served (up to 500 flies per table). Wow, how things have greatly changed, due to the successful importation of suitable dung beetles means less pressure from bush flies around the agricultural and pastural regions of Australia. And having a meal outdoors, in restaurants in these areas is now considered, standard practice. Not to mention these dung beetles can reduce the loss of CO2 to the atmosphere and recycle the phosphorous contained in animal dung directly into the soil as they bury the fresh, wet and odorous manure, back into the earth. Well then, I am all done on the dung beetles this issue, but you do have to appreciate these little critters indeed and their role they play in the environment! Happy Gardening to you all!

There’s a formula to attracting audiences to a sporting venue and it has very little to do with the subject of the entertainment. In my new found life in Brisbane City, I have indulged myself and signed up with the Suncorp Stadium Members Program which allows me to saturate my life with sport especially when you add the AFL and Netball into the equation. Those of you who love the spectacle of entertainment and people watching are heading along most weeks to watch live sport. Naturally, it would be a lot better if the Roar, Reds and Broncos could driver winning results in Queensland. As a punter and commentator, I want to praise the sporting codes who clearly take the time to understand why punters attend sporting venues as opposed to sitting at home and watching the TV. On this occasion I am aiming my praise at the Broncos for understanding an audience and creating an entertainment environment for all. Families love to be entertained and this is exactly what you get when you enter the Suncorp Stadium for a Broncos Match. Fireworks, T-Shirt Guns, Horses, Dancing Girls, Music, Band – it’s all happening. The crowds love it and the players are energised to perform. You only had to attend the recent Sharks V Broncos Match to see how fired-up the Broncos became – brilliant. On the other hand - as hard as it is to say, I am a Rugby Union fan and always have been, however when you attend a Reds Game at Suncorp Stadium, the atmosphere is like to Saturday Morning Suburban Soccer match. The Reds have engaged this gentleman who jumps on the microphone sporadically for the entire game barking comments and trying to rally the audience which is the last thing you want to hear at a sporting match – it is unbelievable. I would really appreciate if someone with ‘pull’ could get into the ear of Rugby Land and implement a plan that attracts more families and females to the entertainment of rugby with music, flames, horses, dancing boy and girl dances. People love to laugh and have a ‘sing-a-long’ and a night out in the City – all you have to do is create a decent spectacle for the punter and the players to perform – Just entertain us and get your heads out of the boardroom. It gets worse when you realise that most people don’t watch the Reds anymore on TV because that won’t pay for Fox Sports – attracting children at a grassroots level requires the creation of a visual heroes for young people – if you can’t watch them play and be entertained, you have a very large problem.

Black Jewfish Black jewfish are now better protected under new rules that apply to commercial and recreational fishers, and the take of gastropods and bivalve molluscs has been completely banned in Moreton Bay to protect sustainability. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said this was in response to feedback from the community concerned about overfishing of these species.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in black jewfish catch over the last 12–18 months and there is a risk of blackmarketing due to the extremely high market prices for their swim bladders,” Mr Furner said. “Black jewfish are vulnerable to overfishing and stock collapses have been previously seen in Australia and overseas.
“Urgent management action is needed to protect this resource and its longterm economic viability.”

“These restrictions are necessary so we can build a legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren.”
To ensure the sustainability of black jewfish, the following new rules have been introduced:
• a commercial catch limit of 20 tonnes per year on the east coast and 6 tonnes per year in the Gulf of Carpentaria; • a reduction in the recreational inpossession limit from 2 to 1; and
• a requirement for black jewfish to be in whole form only on a boat in order to prevent processing of the fish at sea to remove the valuable swim bladders.
The Minister said excessive harvesting of molluscs within Moreton Bay meant a total ban was now necessary. “Gastropod and bivalve molluscs, including mud arks, mud whelks and cockles, can no longer be taken,” he said. “You can still take pipis, and collect empty shells.” “The closure applies within the northern, eastern and southern

Fishing around Bribie Island has been very good lately. Our club fished against the diggers from Gallipoli barracks fishing club last week end. The competition was a “fish length caught”, AFAQ members won the competition with a combined length of 13.54 meters, with a weight of over 13 Kilo’s. The Gallipoli troops combined length of 2.95 meters, we were happy as they thrashed us last year.

Cooks Rocks is reporting catches of good bream, gar and winter whiting, Used for catch (no lead, light line, yabbies and mullet flesh) The Ripples producing good grass emperor and bream, (light lead, medium line, paternoster rig, mullet fillets and pilchards) Ningi Creek has good flathead and bream, (small gang hooks, frogmouth pilchard)
Outside, Bulwer ledge is producing huge grass emperor and big leather jacket and mixed reef fish, and Cape Moreton coffee rocks is producing a nice mixed bag of reef fish. (paternoster rig, pilchards and mullet flesh) Lots of weed still in the passage, however there are still sand crabs and mud crabs to be had for the effort.

Happy Mother's Day!
Each year, the tradition of your elected officials
from all levels of Government is to have their closest florist prepare wreaths to lay at ANZAC services across electorates. This year I decided to make my own wreaths for this special day, and so over the Easter break I began making eight adding my own personal touch. I started in the early hours of the morning when my home was still and silent – a far cry from the normal school holiday throng of activity from energetic sons and their friends at play. It really is easy to overlook that it was just 105 years ago, on the 4th August 1914, when Australia involved itself in World War I. Back then the Australian population was around five million, yet 416,809 brave men would enlist in what was known as “the war to end all wars”. As I continued to make my wreaths, I found myself immersed in thought of what ANZAC Day means to different people, how personal stories from family members, friends and acquaintances influence our understandings and insights. I thought of my paternal grandfather and his service to country and how he must have agonised for his family left behind when sent overseas to fight alongside other brave soldiers during World War II. When we think of those we know it is clear that the term ANZAC transcends the physical meaning, to become, across the years, something that inspires – the undeniable spirit of mateship, endurance, sacrifice and above all irrefutable bravery and grit. I thought also of the women who withstood the First World War, not just those who were sent off with courage as nurses and chauffeurs, but all those mothers who bravely sent their sons to battle never knowing if they would see them again. I thought also of the women whose husbands, fiancés or boyfriends were killed in battle as they too had served their country through sacrificing their beloved to war. For these women there was no option but to press on. Many were left to take on the physical and financial burden of raising their children amidst immense grieving and sorrow, often silently they would cry. When World War I ended, the vast many fortunate to return home to Australian soil suffered physical and emotion wounds so great that resuming normal life often became their next battle field. Their sacrifice would be a life-long journey as with the many who enlisted in the Second World War,

we praise them too. Let us also remember our Vietnam Vets and the sacrifice they made. The other week I had the good fortune of spending some time with our local Vietnam Vets when I went along to their Memorial Park in Bongaree to help with the mowing and weeding. I try to make it to the park as often as I can to lend a hand as it truly is time well spent with these terrific guys – true local legends and just fun to be around. As I continued making my wreaths I recalled reading a passage by Sir Winston Churchill and went searching for it to share. Shortly after the Armistice marking the end of the First World War, Churchill said: “We must look forward one hundred, two hundred, three hundred years to the time when that vast continent of Australia …. will look back through the preceding periods of time to the world shaking episode of the Great War, and when they will seek out with the most intense care every detail of that struggle; when … every family will seek to trace some connection with the heroes who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or fought on the Somme, or in the other great battles in France.” One hundred and one years now past and as Churchill forecast, we do look back as we will continue to do over the next century and the one to follow and so on it will go. And as the years pass us by, we must ensure our young people understand that the peace and freedom we take for granted has come because of great sacrifice and that they too should always remember. We must instil in our young people the belief that there are no limits to human selflessness and it is this, in my view, which binds us all in commonality when we seek the true meaning of ANZAC. As we gathered at ANZAC Day events across the Pumicestone Electorate I was proud to lay my wreaths and pause with deep admiration and respect for the brave men and women who represent our country past and present. To the fallen and to all who put freedom for others before their own interests, our brave service men and women, mothers, partners, children, the list is endless, we honour you all and thank you. This ANZAC Day, as with others to come, we remembered all who gave selflessly in sacrifice to their country.
