Dear Sir, I hope that there is not going to be an upsurge in building Hi rise buildings (as seen as you come on to the Island). Moreton Bay Council have a responsibility to keep Bribie Island as it is with normal housing and low level apartments. There is already problems with parking and access and it will get worse if the Council does not limit building Hi-Rise Apartments. As a person who moved to Bribie Island to live in a laid back relaxed environment I do not want to see that change. There are options elsewhere to build HiRise on the mainland. I would suggest that all Islanders speak with MPs and Council Members and register their feelings regarding this matter. Regards Charles

Dear Editor Ambulance ramping at the Caboolture Hospital has risen by 10% since December 2017. Now almost a third of all patients are not being taken off an ambulance stretcher within 30 minutes of arriving at a hospital. This is clearly a symptom of a system in crisis and shows just how wrong Labor’s health priorities are. The Palaszczuk Labor Government made an election promise to provide a better health system but we are yet to see improvements. Things have gotten worse, with our ambos now transporting patients away from the Caboolture Hospital as they know people won’t get seen in time. An expansion to the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department was meant to be delivered by June this year but again timeframes for these types of vital infrastructure projects have been pushed back and it is now not likely to be completed until the end of this year. It’s not ok to make an election promise, list it in the Budget Papers as a “major deliverable” within a set timeframe, then fail to see it through. The emergency department at the Caboolture Hospital is full to the brim and the reason why ambulances are being ramped and people wait hours to be treated. Our nurses, doctors and support staff at the Caboolture Hospital are incredible but frankly they need more help on the frontline to improve patient care and they need more capacity to deliver emergency treatment. Instead of making better patient care their number one priority, the Labor Government saw fit to waste taxpayers’ money by renaming the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. If only they gave the same attention to the Caboolture Hospital as they did to getting Lady Cilento’s name stripped from the walls we might be on our way to receiving the health services we deserve in the Pumicestone Electorate. 2) Unlimited 4WD’s accessing the beach. We have personally witnessed groups of these vehicles speeding along North Street, before they even enter the beach. A quota/limit to permits is surely the answer, preferably giving locals first option.

All our local newspapers are printing letters to the Editor from residents on Bribie Island, regarding development and lack of infrastructure, which has prompted me to put pen to paper. As a family, we have been residents of Bribe for the past 38 years and have been discussing exactly the same concerns.

We realize changes must occur over the years, however, they need to be for the better. The tourism industry seems to take precedence over the ecology of the area. Development at all costs from government and business, as long as it caters to tourism, is not the answer. Thought should be given to permanent residents. Just a few observations, from a personal perspective:

1) Sandstone Point Hotel – we now monitor “Events” at this venue, making sure we do not venture along the Bribie Island Road when these are scheduled. Family and friends are discouraged from visiting on weekends, because this road is no longer coping, especially when an “event” is occurring. Also, are fireworks on a regular basis really necessary?

3) Irresponsible dog owners on the beach – just venture to the entrance at the end of Benelong Street, Woorim (site of old Koolamara Motel)… the smell of urinating dogs is overpowering in an area that was once pristine. 4) Bribie Bridge – it only takes one accident to cause excessive delays, as experienced recently.

Preserve what we have left. Monitor development and prioritize infrastructure before opportunistic developers spoil this special island. Bribie Island should be managed more sustainably for future generations to come. Marianne H - Bongaree

The recent fires on Bribie that threatened to destroy both public and private properties were the worst I have seen since coming to the Island some eighteen years ago. As I looked up at the red night sky Friday 18th January, all I could think of was how fortunate we are to have so many brave and hardworking people ‘going in to bat’ for us to keep our community safe.

During such times, there is nothing more stirring, gratifying or reassuring than the sound of sirens. The sound that help is on its way. As a community member, I would like to thank all those responsible for their enormous efforts in the recent bush fire abatement. I am just so very grateful that they put their own safety at risk for ours and our beautiful island. Penny Digby

OBITUARY – MADELEINE PATRICIA RYAN 1942 – 2019

Madeleine Patricia Ryan Madeleine Patricia Ryan may well have been the reason the new catchphrase “Social Capital” was coined. Social Capital, in this instance, is the resource or value of people (human capital) and the impact they have on larger groups, for example the way one person can galvanise others to foster interest or support, or volunteer hours, a community can use or count on. Madeleine was her own powerhouse of “Social Capital” in Beachmere for many years. Born in Clayfield on 1 December 1942 Madeleine’s parents moved to Morningside where she was educated and started her married life and, after a short stint in North Queensland, she returned to Morningside to raise her three daughters Carleine, Julieanne and Michelle. Madeleine’s early interests were ballroom dancing, rock collecting, animals and plants, squash and swimming, cards, genealogy and history. Morningside would not keep Madeleine forever and soon she was off to see the world. With her first trip across the ditch

to New Zealand. It was her interest in history which led her to travel to China, Europe, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, The Vatican City, Greece, Indonesia and the Asian Pacific plus many other places that were of interest to her. She revelled in hanging onto the side of an active volcano, running along the original Olympic track, as well as seeking information on the family tree in Ireland. She said she earnt her stripes travelling Western Australia's 1126 km bumpy unsealed Great Central Road. Her motto was “have passport, will travel”, and did so on any mode of transport including cargo and freight planes, trains, buses and automobiles. Madeleine wished for a sea change and always said “she was being driven into Beachmere down Bishop Road” and, when she got to the roundabout she said “this is it”. A resident for 16 years Madeleine embraced the village atmosphere, joining several community groups. She went to join the Red Hatters but, alas, they were not accepting new members, so she started her own group the “Beachmere Babes” until the Red Hatters invited her to join. She was an Area Co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch, “walking the streets” delivering monthly newsletters and playing cards with the Community Hall Card Group. Madeleine was Beachmere Lioness Club VP for two years before later becoming President for a further four years ending her term in 2018. A huge job each year was to organise the Lioness Spring Fair and she would often be found outside the IGA selling raffle tickets, not only for the Lioness Club but for any local club or group that needed assistance. Her ability to recall people’s names and phone numbers from memory stood her in good stead when calling upon help or assistance from others. as well as when selling those raffle tickets, if she saw someone and knew the person was supportive she would sometimes say

3 something like “I'll put you down for 5, you can pay me on the way out” Madeleine did all these things because of her strong sense of community and her efforts were recognised when she was awarded the 2017 Longman Volunteer Award. Madeleine was a very empathetic person who would reach out and help people and animals. Across her life she welcomed many people into her world, young and old and the “in betweens”, most of whom have become lifelong friends. She also maintained friendships dating back to her youth and her days in Morningside. The pets she took in, were often lost or homeless and she cared for them too. Although her health was often poor, she loved Beachmere, being needed and being busy. She loved organising and organising others. Madeleine’s health deteriorated over the last few months, but it only encouraged her to start organising activities for people with less mobility, strength and fitness – hence we have Gentle Chair Yoga in Beachmere every Monday morning. As Madeleine’s health failed she became housebound – not easy for a free spirit. It was her wish to remain at home and though her children describe her as “independent, opinionated and headstrong” and it wasn't in her nature to ask for help for herself, it was only through the acceptance of help from the generous and thoughtful community of her precious friends and family, that she was able to remain at home. There was a group of people who would support her in person and others who contacted her through phone calls. A lady with a guarded exterior but a very soft interior. Unfortunately, Madeleine’s body grew weak even as her mind stayed sharp. Madeleine is survived by her daughters Carleine Billing, Julieanne Holmes and Michelle Neochi and her grandchildren Lee, Alicia, Lillian, Harrison, and great grandchild Ryan.

forms the basis for the Pizza and other recipes. Both café and Italian Restaurant menus were written entirely by Joe and Rachael based around what they cook and eat at home. It does help that they manage to recruit a few sensational a la carte and pizzas chefs to manage the food preparation and cooking processes. Yes it is true that one of their chefs has worked in Melbourne under Shannon Bennett which is helpful when it comes to creating authentic dishes and delicious sauces.

each other - It gets worse when we start talking food and cafes. I was having a chat to a colleague a few weeks ago and she said, “You should check out the new café at Spinnaker Sound Marina at Sandstone Point – there is an Ex-Sydney couple who have opened a new café and looking to expand – they also have a few quality chefs – this is one of my most favourite places.” That was enough for me to get cracking and line up a meeting with these apparent Ex-Sydney Siders. I headed off to meet Joe and Rachael Nocera, Owners and Creators of DocknDine, opened in January 2018 and the new Italian Restaurant, Ignite by Dockside opened on 1st March 2019 (about 2 weeks before this story was published). Arriving about an hour earlier than our scheduled interview time with Rachael and Joe, I decided to head to DocknDine Café and check out the tucker – After my drive up from Brisbane, I was a little peckish. I did manage to briefly meet Joe who was working with the team and moving across the Italian Restaurant and Café during a busy lunch service. I ordered the Signature Beef Burger from the DocknDine menu accompanied by standard Flat White – it was bloody delicious – as a Queensland Pineapple Lover – anytime you manage to line up beef, cheese, bacon, beetroot, lettuce and pineapple on a Brioche Bun - I am happy – especially for $11.90 – are you serious – okay I passed on the extras – $4 for chips and a soft drink. I was also informed that I could order a Beer or Glass of wine for $5.00 extra – great value. To set the scene, the DocknDine Café is located on the Spinnaker Sound Marina at Sandstone Point with awesome views of the marina and Bribie Passage. The Italian Restaurant, Ignite by Dockside, is located almost next door to DocknDine with the same awesome views. If you are heading to Bribie Island, you can either turn left off the Bribie Island Road or turn right into Spinnaker Sound Marina if you are coming from Bribie Island. There is adequate parking within the Marina Carpark – just follow the signs or walk to the marina – you can’t miss it as long as you follow a path to the Marina. Finally, our time arrived and in walked Rachel accompanied by Rachael’s Husband Joe - we sat outside together overlooking the Marina – it is a stunning setting. The first impression you get when meeting Rachael and Joe is a sense of calmness. Rachael

Selection of amazing sweets at DocknDine Café has an infectious warm smile and is keen to tell the stories and Joe calmly shares his vision and ideas. When asked what drew this couple from a corporate lifestyle in Sydney to Bribie Island, Rachael said, “We didn’t come here with the intention to buy a café or restaurant – we did share a dream of finding a place by the water and perhaps owning an Italian Restaurant one day, but it was only a dream. We noticed something in an article about Bribie Island, so we decided to check it out for a weekend. We came up and drove over the Bribie Island Bridge and decided to purchase some land – We fell in love with the location. We then went for a drive and popped into the café at Spinnaker Sound Marina, which is now called ‘Dockndine,’ for a coffee and the rest is history – we stayed,” Rachael said. “It’s been a whirlwind ride since we bought and opened our very first café and called it ‘DocknDine’ in January

We could not believe it when the restaurant next door became available which we also purchased and renamed it Ignite by Dockside - this only opened on 1st March 2019.” Both Joe and Rachael came from corporate backgrounds – Joe had been working in Logistics and Rachael within the Financial HR Sector. As Rachael said, “We both understand and love dealing with people – we complement each other.” It wasn’t an accident that Rachael and Joe decided they could run a multi-venue hospitality business. Joe comes from an Italian Family and has learned many recipes from his Nona. As Joe says, “I have been cooking my own sauce at home for 15 years, using my Nona’s recipe. We always had a dream to create our own Italian Restaurant – it just fell into place – it was meant to be.” In fact, Joe still makes the traditional Nepalese Sauce for the Restaurant that

We have not been anywhere or done anything since we arrived here. We built a house and all our gear is still in the garage – our beds are made – we will get there – we are in the exciting/hardworking stabilizing period. It is a very busy 7-day commitment. What drives you? There’s nothing in the world you cannot do – if you have the right attitude and have the right people around you – we are a great team. We love people – we love food – We are both passionate about what we do – we can feel the appreciation for our investment and efforts. Building a new business and seeing the rewards through our customer relationships.

How do you keep a relationship going between husband and wife / Business Partners? We have a unique connection – we just bounce off each other – we have a normal marriage – when your up – when your down – you just help each other – we make it through.’ What coffee do you serve? We chose Aromas coffee because we like the flavour and it really works well in our climate and demographic. How do manage to recruit competent staff? We have been lucky to attract three excellent lead chefs, two cooks and a solid service team. Fortunately, our two business kitchens are connected so we can integrate our chefs and support our roster and prep needs together. We are also lucky because both my mum (Rachael’s Mum) and dad moved up to Bribie Island after we came here and now our mum helps at the Italian Restaurant (Ignite by Dockside). Are you still recruiting? We are starting to work with schools and recruitment people to support the education of young people from across our community. We are always looking for stars of the future - if your son or daughter are looking for work and are natural communicators - love food – love hanging around your home kitchen - willing to learn how to work in a café or restaurant – come down and say hello Contact us some time - you never know where it will lead – we need good young people to lead the next generation. Where do you see yourselves in 10 years? We see that there will be an enormous growth across this area, and in 10 years across the region. Hopefully with a new lease and greater work life balance. We would like people the see our venues as ‘the place to be’ The most important thing for us to create a legacy for our daughter – our family - our new community.

Beachmere Healthy and “Wealthy”

Community With discussion also prevalent about loneliness in today’s society, volunteering is also a great way to combat loneliness; either contributing as a volunteer or through being the recipient of a volunteer based program. Beachmere has a wealth of volunteers and is rich in community “social capital” with Beachmere Assist and U3A Beachmere just two of the local programs utilising volunteers to run activities and promote community connectedness. Beachmere Community Disaster Management Team is another local group utilising the skills and knowledge of local volunteers to provide an important service to the local area. All three of these local projects tick all the boxes when it comes to getting people involved, boosting self esteem, offering opportunities to meet new people, learn new skills and promote improvements to physical and mental health.

Research shows volunteering is great for your health and wellbeing and there are ample opportunities for volunteering in Beachmere. According to the Australia Bureau of Statistics 2016 Census some nineteen percent of Australians aged over 15 years contribute to their community by volunteering. This volunteering can be through many different organisations, and for many different causes, but more and more studies are showing the benefits. Other surveys conclude volunteers have less trouble sleeping, less anxiety, less feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, better friendships and better social networks and reveal that 68% of volunteers agree volunteering makes them feel physically healthier, 96% say that it makes people happier and 77% says it improves mental health. Other benefits from volunteering include boosting self-esteem, improved connections to local community, meeting new people and making new friends, gaining new skills and knowledge and sometimes even boosting job and career prospects.

Beachmere U3A President, David Newell, says although U3A is new to Beachmere, locals have embraced the opportunities it provides, signing up for classes, joining in discussions over coffee and generally becoming more active and aware. “Volunteers are brushing up their knowledge or gaining new skills, meeting new people and taking on new interests,” he said, “there is definitely a “buzz” around Beachmere.” Beachmere Area Network Group President Karen Harris agrees that volunteering is an important part of the local community. “Beachmere is rich in volunteer wealth, BANG uses volunteers across all its projects and activities from Fabulous Art Beachmere to Movie night and Community Carols. Beachmere Assist, our weekly drop-in coffee morning can only continue through the dedication of its volunteers to keep the program going. “ “We see volunteering as an important way to engage people in the community and to offer something back to the community. It’s proven that volunteers are often happier, healthier, have increased social interaction. It’s that sense of purpose, of having a goal and a reason… and it gives that person, and their community, a definite sense of connectedness.” Beachmere also boasts a Community Bowls Club, Lioness and a Lions Club, a Men’s Shed, Fishing Club, a Football Club, a Mosaics Club, Indoor Bowls Club, Seniors meet ups and cards as well as Cubs and Scouts for the junior members of the Community. If volunteering is good for mind and body health, Beachmere must be one of the “healthiest” communities around.

Bribie Island Road and Bridge has not kept pace with the significant growth in tourism and developments that has taken place in the Pumicestone Electorate over the past 5 to 10 years. Bribie Island Road is the main connecting route that takes people to work, brings them home to their family and loved ones and is a lifeline for local businesses and tourism in our area. Major infrastructure investment is needed to upgrade this road and bridge that so many rely on every day – upgrades to reduce congestion and travel times and improve safety for all commuters. In July 2018, the Federal Government acknowledged the urgent need to fix priority pinch points like the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection by providing $20 million in funding. This money has been sitting ready and waiting in Canberra for the State Government to do its part. No more delays – fix Bribie Island Road.

Palaszczuk Government says they have delivered key milestone in fisheries reform!

The Palaszczuk Government has delivered on a key plank of its 10-year, $20 million Sustainable Fisheries Strategy with the passage of new legislation in Parliament today.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the Fisheries (Sustainable Fisheries) Bill made real changes in fisheries management possible for the first time.

“These changes are a critical step in providing the legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren and protecting jobs in our commercial and recreational fishing industries,” Mr Furner said.

“More compliance officers are patrolling our waters and black marketers are being shut down as part of the most sweeping reforms of Queensland’s fishing sector in our state’s history. “We’re cracking down on black marketing and pushing forward with greater recognition of recreational, commercial and indigenous fishing interests.”

Mr Furner said the passage of the Bill delivered another reform milestone in the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy, a key election and Great Barrier Reef commitment.

“A significant element of this is stronger compliance powers for Queensland Fisheries and Boating Patrol (QBFP) officers, and tougher penalties for those who sell seafood on the black market,” Mr Furner said. “We now have 20 new officers out on the water safeguarding our fisheries resources. “Just this week an illegally-modified

“During consultation earlier this year, more than 90% of people said they wanted stronger compliance powers and heavier penalties for those flaunting the rules.” The Government rejected amendments proposed by Opposition spokesman Tony Perrett and the LNP to gut the enforcement powers of Fisheries officers. “The LNP amendment would have given black market fishers a five-day head start before their catch could be inspected,” Mr Furner said.

“That’s five days to cover their tracks, sell their ill-gotten gains and destroy the evidence under the LNP’s proposals. “Such a betrayal of the commercial fishing industry would give free reign to black market fishers, devastating the jobs of our commercial fishers and leaving our oceans a fishless desert.”

The changes to the Fisheries Act aim to: • Modernise the objectives of the Fisheries Act and recognise the interests of key stakeholder groups;

• Clarify the roles of the Fisheries Minister and the chief executive in

the management of the State’s fisheries to allow for more responsive decision-making through the use of harvest strategies; Strengthen the enforcement powers and penalties to address serious fisheries offences such as black marketing; and

• Reduce complexity and remove redundant provisions.

LNP Government Says “Labor casts aside Queensland’s commercial fishers”

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has ignored the advice of a committee stacked with its own MPs and rammed through second-rate fisheries laws.

Liberal National Party Shadow Minister for Fisheries Tony Perrett said the Parliamentary Committee had made many sensible recommendations that would have brought the Fisheries (Sustainable Fisheries) Amendment Bill 2018 into line with community and industry expectations. “Queensland’s commercial fishing industry not only bolsters the state economy but is a vital primary industry for towns up and down the coast,” Mr Perrett said. “Labor’s new laws make it abundantly clear that they don’t care about the

intellectual property rights of our commercial fishers or their future viability.

“The committee recommended that the new laws bolster penalties associated with the misuse of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data by public servants, the creation of a statutory review of the VMS rollout after 18 months, and the redefining of ‘commercial quantity’ to properly reflect the reality of current black-market activity. “The LNP also argued against Labor’s bureaucratic power grab that will allow inspectors to search and enter property without notice or a warrant. This is an affront to fishers’ property rights.

“Labor Fisheries Minister Mark Furner arrogantly refused to include the recommendations of the committee, which included three of his Labor colleagues, and rammed the Bill through.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government also guillotined debate on the Bill, which meant not all of the LNP’s amendments were able to be debated. “I want commercial fishers to know that the LNP tried to make this bad situation somewhat easier to swallow, but this arrogant government would not budge an inch. “The LNP stands shoulder to shoulder with Queensland’s commercial fishers and will continue to hold this failing Labor Government to account.

“Only an LNP Government will restore balance to Queensland fisheries and put an end to Labor’s attacks.”

Running a business from home/ remotely is extremely appealing and pretty commonplace these days and is there any wonder? It makes good business sense on several fronts. There are many benefits, but there are also some pitfalls that await the unwary and sadly, it’s often a realisation that hits after you’ve made the momentous decision. Depending on the nature of your business and the product/service you offer will depend on exactly whether your business also lends itself to working remotely.

Working from remote and distant locations that are outside traditional offices such as home, local coffee shop or even a hotel room is continuing to gain more and more traction thanks to the ever-expanding information technology capabilities.

Each place you work leaves its mark and shapes you in some way. Over the course of my career, I’ve worked in many different environments ranging from luxurious, top-flight corporate offices in the City of London, complete with fancy doorman in a top hat through to run down one room dog boxes, complete with a leaky roof! Nice offices are a bonus, but as a rule, you really don’t worry too much about the trappings of your surroundings as long as you enjoy your work. The exceptions being when it is stinking hot,

LABOR BRINGING FAIRNESS BACK TO BANKING & FINANCE

Susan Lamb MP says “Labor will give bank victims a fairer chance to fight for their rights with a $640 million Banking Fairness Fund.” The fund will raise $160m per year from Australia’s biggest banks to revolutionise the services available to Australians in financial difficulty – a key recommendation from the Royal Commission. Labor will double the number of financial counsellors across Australia from 500 to 1000 with a $320 million commitment from the Banking Fairness Fund over the next 4 years. These new financial counsellors will provide advocacy, support and advice to an additional 125,000 Australians each year. Federal Member for Longman Susan Lamb MP recognised that after the findings of the Banking Royal Commission, Labor wasn’t going to let the big banks off the hook. “It’s not fair that regular Aussies from our community have continually been ripped off by the big banks and executives in the financial services sector.” “Labor is bringing back a fair go for the people of our community by implementing recommendations from the Royal Commission and supporting locals who need financial counselling.” A stronger, larger financial counselling sector is just one part of Labor’s plan to restore fairness to financial services. Labor fought for the Banking Royal Commission – unlike Scott Morrison and the Liberals who voted against the Royal Commission 26 times, called it a “populist whinge” and refused to give parliament more time to implement the recommendations. Labor will make further announcements about the other programs that will be funded by the Banking Fairness Fund over coming days. Labor called for the Royal Commission, Labor fought for the Royal Commission, and Labor will work day and night to give victims of financial misconduct the support they need to fight for their rights.

The Disadvantages

Family and friends need to be educated that you are actually “at work” even though your office is in your home. It often takes quite a bit of effort to get the message across that you cannot be disturbed just because you are at home. Not everyone thrives on working alone, and unless you have staff coming in to work, you may have very little interaction with others. Some people actually need personal interaction so it’s important to establish a system for connecting and keeping yourself stimulated. If yours is a business that relies on technology – which mine is – a backup plan is essential! That means using regular, automated backup for all your work, and having a second device to access Skype, internet etc if your computer crashes or the landline goes down.

A word of warning, adopt a routine that includes getting dressed rather than sitting at your desk in your PJ’s all day. You don’t want to get caught short if you have to dash out, someone drops by or an unexpected video call comes in.

An Assistance Dog is trained to help the veteran in public and is guaranteed access

The bottom line is that it very much depends on the individual, the business and the personalities involved in whether working from home is best for you. States have different legislation, or none at all, so Young Diggers uses Queensland PAT assessment. Young Diggers uses registered trainers and assessors at present while we wait on our registration as assessors. The assessments are done at a local training centre or by a local trainer. There are a number of trainers across Australia to assist members with their training. The program does not have a ready supply of dogs. However, we can access dogs from breeders and local pounds, which saves the lives of abandoned dogs as well as members can provide their own dog after assessment. Young Diggers provides ongoing help and support to the new owner and their dog to ensure a quality experience for both of them. The program not only helps these veterans and their families but recently we have included veterans of Emergency Services. Young Diggers does not discriminate, pass judgment or devalue those men and women living with, and suffering from, combat stress and mental illness. The organisation provides a safe environment for members to network with one another, talk through tough times and to exchange training tips. Family members are welcome and encouraged to get involved with training. Young Diggers relies on donations and Government grants and is run entirely by volunteers. IT’S TIME TO BRING IN THE HEAVY HITTERS!

How much longer do our State and Federal economies have to haemorrhage whilst Governments sit on their hands with their heads in the sand? Should the Feds be putting an end to the debacle that is the DST debate in eastern Australia? States and Territories manage the control of time zones – it dates back to 1894 when each jurisdiction adopted what we now know as ‘Standard Time’. They each have their own Act confirming this - the Standard Time Act in Queensland is dated 1894! However our Federal Government also has powers under Section 51 [XV] of the Constitution. The last time the Feds used these powers was during WW l and WW ll – clocks in Australia were advanced and retarded by 60 minutes at various times between 1st January 1917 and 26th March 1944. DRASTIC TIMES CALLED FOR DRASTIC MEASURES. Keeping our factories open longer each day during the two world wars was the way our leaders reacted to the supply needs that arose during those drastic times. Our States and the A.C.T. on the eastern seaboard [and, to a degree, the Federal scene] have their respective economies incurring massive extra costs between October and April each year when the clocks within Eastern Standard Time (EST) are ‘out of sync’. The only State that has attempted to quantify these losses is Queensland. A 2010 report from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland [CCIQ] showed that 2200 member businesses had incurred extra outgoings totalling $4.35 BILLION between October and April. By using CPI adjustments and extrapolating that number, the figure is now well over $5.0 Billion and totals about $127 Billion since DST commenced in 1971. We are still awaiting figures from the other States.

If one was to assume that the clocks were permanently synchronised, thereby removing this anomaly, then losses would become profits and taxes would accrue. ‘How much?’ I hear you say. At an average of, let’s say, 20 cents in the dollar, then Queensland’s contribution alone would be about $1 Billion per annum or would have been about $25 Billion since 1971! Not chicken feed when you think of it! And our Governments are not interested? As John McEnroe might say:-“You can’t be serious”!! How long can Australia afford to have these dollars disappear down the drain every year? If a National Disaster Fund had been established, say, 5 years ago and the clocks had been synchronised back in 2014, grab your Casio and calculate how many of those dollars could have been in the NDF to fund the Catastrophic and Drastic circumstances that now exist in Northern and Central Queensland alone? It’s About Time some of our Governments changed their inertial attitude towards this irregularity and applied some meaningful time to considering the abandonment of DST and incorporating the principles of the ‘REAL-TIME Initiative’ which is to advance A.E.S.T. by 30 minutes - PERMANENTLY. The benefits are innumerable. On the lighter side of this, somewhat controversial, subject, it is worth quoting a passage from American Indian folklore about daylight saving time:“Only the Government would cut one end off a blanket, sew it on the other end and believe that it has made the blanket longer.”

I bet you’ve seen the adverts that tell you to park further away from the shops and use the stairs not the lift, but did you? Have you bothered to check out all the free information on the government websites aimed at helping Queenslanders become fitter and healthier? You know deep down that those extra 10 or 20 kilos that are now firmly (well, more likely they are wobbly) part of your “personality” are shortening your lifespan, making you uncomfortable, and your knees are now pleading for help as they can no longer carry that extra weight to where it is you need to go, but life is just so busy how can you make a move to remove those kilos. You know that exercise is scientifically proven to increase happiness, stability, independence, muscle tone, bone density, energy levels, sleep patterns and confidence, while reducing blood pressure, depression, stress, bodyfat, cholesterol, and the effects of dementia but it does take up your precious time. Fitting everything else, including watching TV programs about other people losing weight, into your busy life is considered to be more important than a brisk walk or an exercise class three times a week. So many other things must be done to keep your life running smoothly that many people consider it too difficult to find time to make their body run smoothly, or walk briskly. While the recommended daily exercise time for adult Australians was 30 minutes a day of MODERATE exercise, due to the increasing decline in the health of Australians it has been

Senior Gentle Lying Leg Exercises Before You Start

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do any of these exercises if you feel uncomfortable with the movement or you feel nervous about how yur body may react. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

The exercises shown are done while in bed, they are a great way to start your day but can be done any time you are lying down. They are designed to gently strengthen your leg muscles. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, keeping your legs strong will help you stay independent as using these muscles will help with your balance and mobility. Done regularly these exercises will strengthen your legs and even small changes can make a big difference over time. Even by practicing only one exercise a day you can improve your movement over time. So make sure you are lying comfortably and let's start.

And it’s 45 minutes of MODERATE EXERCISE EVERY DAY! But hang on what’s “moderate” and how do you know when you are achieving that level? For a start just let me point out that wandering along with your dog stopping every 10mtrs for a sniff to check the pee-mails on a bush from the last dog is not moderate exercise. Every day, at least twice a day, I hear reasons why someone is not exercising and one of the best reasons I’ve heard is “I tried exercise once but I became breathless and broke out in a sweat, so I figured I was allergic to it and haven’t done it since”. This level of exertion is what would be considered vigorous not moderate, and not because of the sweat but because of the “Breathless”. Exercise levels are measured using a Perceived Rate of Exertion, which simply means that you measure how you feel when exercising using a scale

Ankle Pumps

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Bend your ankles slowly so that your feet are moving up and down, like you are paddling, making sure you are not forcing them past a comfortable place. Repeat 10 times each foot then rest Repeat slowly, only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 sets. Rest

Heel Slides

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Bend one knee to a comfortable position and slowly pull your heel toward your buttocks. Do not bend your hip more than 90°. Hold for 10 seconds. Slowly return to flat position. Repeat with other knee. Only do as many slides each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

Hip Abduction

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Keep your toes pointed toward the ceiling. Move one leg out to the side as far as is comfortably possible. Slowly return to the starting position and relax. Repeat with other leg – again only to a position that is comfortable for this leg. Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest (You can place a towel or pillow between your legs if you wish but this is not necessary)

Straight Knee Lift

Lie with both knees bent and with your head supported by your pillow and your hands by your sides. Keeping your buttocks on the bed, slowly straighten one leg as straight as is comfortable for you. Slowly return foot to the bed and repeat with other leg. Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

So to work out what working at a level 11-14 MODERATE exercising is, the easiest way is that you should be able to say FIVE words before you need another breath . While during vigorous activities holding a conversation or saying more than a few words before stopping to take a breath is more difficult. Please remember everybody’s body is different! It is YOUR LEVEL of intensity that YOU MUST WORK TO. A active professional sportsperson could run up 50 stairs for 45 mins and feel they worked at a moderate level, while someone who hasn’t exercised for a while might find a gentle walk brings their breathing to a moderate level. With clients ranging in age from 25 to 85 our circuit classes are designed so everyone in the class works to their own moderate intensity level, no competition, no pressure, and this means that it doesn’t matter where their level is when they start the classes, by increasing their fitness their moderate level changes and these changes are easily seen. We see results like Bill who couldn’t walk the supermarket aisles due to lack of cardio fitness and knee pain from being overweight. Because Bill realised how much his life was deteriorating and how much he was missing out on at family gatherings and events that he couldn’t attend due to his lack of fitness and mobility he “found the time” and slowly,

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence It can be hard for young adults with a disability to find friends, integrate into the community and live with a sense of purpose. However, by learning to be more independent, they gain a greater ability to speak up for themselves and choose the life they want. They may even increase their capacity to settle into a home and life of their own. In our experience every step they take to physical, emotional and social independence is beneficial both for them as individuals and for the community.

With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can make significant steps towards learning daily living skills and more independence. The process may be a gradual one and may require extra effort, time and positive energy but age is certainly no barrier to learning. Starting slowly and proceeding step by step with changes that add up to a more empowered lifestyle is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disability can be encouraged to choose their own

Community consistently increased his fitness level so that he now kayaks, cycles, walks, does our classes and enjoys life far more all because he decided that using just 0.3% of his day was worth it. No one else can make you change your fitness, they can encourage you, assist you, and support you but they can’t make you find the time to exercise. Isn’t it funny how the saying is “Find the time” because the time is always there, it really is just your decision to “Use the time” in different ways. So think about those 45 minutes that you could use to improve your health, reduce your bodyfat, improve your bone density, reduce your blood pressure, strengthen your heart, make you happier and help you sleep. They don’t have to be first thing in the morning, or last thing at night and they definitely don’t have to be done all in one 45 minute lump! 45 minutes…… think about it…. How long does it take you to make a cup of tea or coffee, get organised to sit down and watch a 30 min TV programme. I bet if you timed the whole process of coffee making, waiting for the programme to start and watching it, then washing your cup after I’m sure you would find you actually had close to 45 minutes to go for a walk instead, and while the TV programme might have been interesting….. did it improve your health?

Bribie Island RSL’s International Women’s Day (IWD) lunch was a huge success. The event was used not only to empower women in the local community but to help raise funds for Hairdressers with Hearts (HWH).

Lisa Curry AO MBE and Sonia Colvin with RSL donation cheque Local founder of HWH Sonia Colvin delivered a powerful speech on the origins of HWH and why we need to stand up against domestic violence. In her speech Sonia said “As we move forward through 2019 let’s take the shame away that is associated with the words Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse in this country and try to find solutions…stand together and say there’s no excuse for elder abuse and Domestic and Family Violence.” Fiona from the Centre Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) for the Moreton Bay Region also spoke, touching on domestic violence in the military and the importance of women empowering each other. The keynote speaker for the lunch was former Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry AO MBE who inspired the audience by discussing her mother’s experience with domestic violence and pledging her support for HWH. Whilst the RSL fundraised $2000 for HWH, with the cheque presented to Sonia, Lisa Curry AO MBE surprised everyone by donating a further $2000 to the charity.

We aim to create a safe and secure environment through which young adults with disabilities are able to develop every day skills and form new friendships, gradually becoming more independent and confident along the way. Beachmere’s Drone Field “Takes Off” – Local Drone flyers help with new Registration process

Local drone enthusiast and photographer Jessica Culley says, "This is a fantastic resource for the drone community and model aircraft flyers. We have had a lot of interest from the people of Beachmere who come and watch and have a chat while we are flying there. We are hoping to promote drones as a fun hobby for people of all ages and overturn some of the negative publicity that surrounds drones.”

A Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) researcher came to chat to drone flyers, racers and model aircraft flyers from as part of his work helping to set up the new registration process for drones in the next few months. He was interested in the views of all drone flyers who are going to need to register their drones with CASA. The registration process will include a proposed annual fee of $20 for recreational flyers and $100 - $160 for commercial flyers with an online mandatory education programme for drone flyers to ensure they are aware of the regulations. There is much debate in the drone

community as to whether this system will help with enforcement of the regulations, as it is feared that the so called "cowboy" operators will not register. The majority of flyers are aware and compliant with regards to the CASA regulations and are not opposed to registration.

PUMICESTONE MP, Simone Wilson wants every student attending schools in her electorate to receive the very best education and this means ensuring they have comfortable learning environments to begin with. “We believe that cool classrooms are conducive with good learning outcomes and this is what we want for our kids”, Simone said.

“This is why I am calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to match the LNP’s commitment to aircondition every state school classroom in Queensland”.

The SES also attended the site for a photo shoot on the day, and were interested in the technology and how it may assist in emergency situations.

Simone does not believe it is the responsibility of parents and citizen associations to have to fundraise to install air-conditioning in classrooms.

The field continues to be used by drone flyers as an excellent resource, away from homes and surrounded by bushland, it is the perfect place for flyers to practice and hone their skills in a large, safe and well maintained environment. The flyers hope to be able to use the site for events and get togethers throughout the year.

In the western world, we all take the supply of clean water and sewerage systems for granted. When we turn one of our many household taps on here we expect fresh clean water to appear – instantly – in our glass or shower. Lord help the Council if it is even slightly delayed or discoloured. However, people in developing countries are not so lucky. According to a recent World Health Organisation Report, 3 in 10 people worldwide, or 2.1 billion, lack access to safe, readily available, water at home. Furthermore 6 in 10, or 4.5 billion, lack safely managed sanitation. As a result, every year, 361,000 children under 5 years of age die, due to diarrhoea. These figures often get lost in translation – due to their size! Poor sanitation and contaminated water are also linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, and typhoid. And now, just as we are on the brink of eradicating polio, the Pakistan Polio Eradication Program has just detected the poliovirus in the sewage of 10 of its cities. During March, which is Rotary Water and Sanitation Month, Rotarians recognise their commitment to create healthier communities by supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs,

Rotary’s people of action mobilise resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that brings lasting change. Since 2013, The Rotary Foundation has invested in more than 1,000 WASH projects in more than 100 countries. Through grants from The Rotary Foundation and fundraising by Rotary clubs, our volunteers have supported water purification, hygiene education, latrine construction, and waste management. By 2030 Rotary hopes to finish providing everyone in the world with safe water, sanitation and hygiene. A simple, but substantial, goal! Bribie Rotary Club was involved in a WASH project in 2016/2017 when , in partnership with the Rotary Club of Drouin Victoria, we provided water to the Pinanapatan Elementary School in the Philippines.

Currently, we are developing a project called “Hand Hygiene for Health.” This project will teach children in developing countries to wash their hands and establish the hand wash habit. Water will be provided using SpaTaps - a pocket-sized cost effective device that can convert any bottle into a flow controllable tap or shower. “Hand Hygiene for Health” will have a stand in the House of Friendship at the Rotary International Convention, which is to be held in Hamburg Germany in June 2019. The Rotary Club of Noosa have already joined us, and at the Convention, our Club members George and Mary

Grant will join SpaTaps’ Stuart Mason, to showcase the project and get the support from Rotary Clubs from around the World. Once we have the financial support we then apply for a global grant from Rotary International.

Tests have found that a 1. 25L bottle of water, with a SpaTap attached, will provide up to 67 hand washes with soap, or a 15 minute shower. SpaTap is already being used by WASH personnel, government disaster relief agencies and in schools in the Solomon Islands and Fiji that have little or no water. It is perfect for installing outside toilet blocks. A trial of SpaTap is to be run in Milne Bay province of PNG. When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their

families. As we already know – one of the most important tools in our fight against disease – even in Australia – is a simple hand wash – before eating food and after passing human excreta. So let's us hope our “Hand Hygiene for Health” proposal becomes a reality. If it does it will assist Rotary to reach its 2030 goal of providing clean safe water to everyone. One day we might even change the words to Coleridge’s "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and the Mariner actually has water, water everywhere – and every drop to drink!

18 Cranky Lizard remembers growing up in the Australian Outback on a place that had cattle, sheep, crops and an old, rickety shed that was the other place that my Grandfather kept his medicine ; in the house and down the steps to the cellar was the other medicine cabinet, well, it was a big, brown jar rather than a cabinet. But after a tough day making a quid from the dirt; the medicine worked pretty well. One particular day, in the very early 1970s, stands out as a lesson for all of us on the application of new ideas, new techniques, new ways of doing things. Instead of mustering by horses and slowly walking the cattle to the yards where they could wait for the trucks, the branding iron, the ear tags and the ‘pinking’ shears, the family bosses decided that we would use a new, modern way of doing this old task. We would use aerial mustering – a brilliant new cost-saving technique that would open a new world. Well, sort of? The day was hot and dusty with an evil North wind blowing, the cattle were spooky, the aircraft were fluttering about the sky, the horses were pissed off at the whole noisy circus and, in the end, the cattle stampeded, the aircraft still had to be paid for and Cranky Lizard decided it was a good idea to stay in the Army for a few more years. So? You may ask, what is all this about? Cranky Lizard has noticed, as probably quite a few of you, who read this have noticed, that there is a resurgence of socialism as a panacea to our political problems –, particularly among the millennial generation. That generation of young Australians born in the early 1980s. Although it must be stated that it is not only in Australia that this phenomenon has popped up in the political garden like a late-blooming triffid! In 1989, the Berlin Wall collapsed, as did the Soviet Union and apart from a few desperate ‘ hold outs ‘ – like Cuba, North Korea and probably the ABC, socialism, as a means of governing ourselves was generally discredited. Liberal democracy and market economics prevailed and it seemed as if these ideas were much superior to socialism. And so it was through the 1980s, 1990s and the early years of the ’00s. The world turned slowly on its axis as it has always done as it followed its orbit around the Sun and amongst the stars. Life on Earth went on, and, generally speaking, the overall standard of living on the planet improved and humans lived better than they had ever done – obviously millions of people still suffered the indignity and humiliation of poverty, hunger and disease; in a general sense, however, the world was

Cranky Lizard Speaks Millennial Socialism = The Energy and Assertiveness of Restless Youth a better place then and is now. The western democracies glittered with bright lights and the promise of a better peaceful life – the dispossessed, those fleeing cultural and political oppression flocked to the lights and the promises, much like Jason and the Argonauts followed the songs of the sirens… Along with genuine refugees came the opportunists, the economic refugees and the murdering, darkhearted terrorists of Islam, the Jihadis. These millions, globally, placed huge burdens upon the existing market economies to support them. This demand plus the uncontrolled greed and slack financial regulation of the Wall Street culture resulted in the Global Financial Crisis of 2009. The GFC shocked the Western democracies, and their economies – academics, government regulators, bankers all responded urgently; the structure and the foundation stones of our economic thinking were sound, and the GFC was kicked into touch ‘ figuratively speaking.’ But, as always, there was a cost. A generation of young people, the millennials, had been shown a shattering glimpse of the mouth of the dragon. Their previously cocooned lifestyles had been shown to be vulnerable to market forces. Employment on demand was no longer a given and the cost of housing for themselves and their partners was heading North at an alarming rate and they, the millennials, formed a collective view that the world was not a paradise. It became obvious that their world could be shattered by forces beyond their control and that the existing systems of government, liberal democracies and market forces would not provide for them the secure and safe places in the world that they had assumed was theirs to be had!

In casting about for solutions they, collectively, if you like, stumbled upon the tired old carcass of socialism, lying exhausted and comatose in a ditch alongside life’s path. And so, the carpet baggers, the virtue signallers, the old boofheads from the socialist revolution seized their opportunity and their discredited, tuneless nonsense drawled out of broken string banjoes, whilst the Aderns, the Corbyns, the Sanders, the Occasional-Cortez’s and the Shortens cast their powders into the community fire creating puffs of light and promise. And, a generation drifted to the Left. They did so, driven by their own anxieties and collective ignorance of what this discredited, reeking old carcass represented. But wait! This was a new generation infused with the energy of youth and the luminous optimism that theirs was the “ New Socialism” – not the old broken one, Oh No! – this was the new one, and it worked, according to the gospel preachers named above. It would work. Re-distribution was the magic key, that we, in our generations had missed. They would re-distribute wealth, assets, opportunities on a fair basis and we shall all live happily ever after. [ Anyone heard that rubbish before ??] Curious, Cranky Lizard became, and so a point was made of meeting with some of these new socialists and to listen to their music. We discussed wealth. What was it and how would you distribute it? That’s when it all became a bit weird folks. You see, Cranky Lizard’s definition of wealth differs greatly from these new young socialists idea of wealth.

The creators of wealth are the primary industries, mining and agriculture predominant. Where there is an empty paddock, wheat is sown, in time harvested and turned into food which enters the economic chain of events. The cash generated by the sales of the wheat, which never existed until the farmer sowed the wheat seeds is a pure form of wealth. Created from nothing by hard work and vision. Essential minerals are produced, by miners, taking risks and digging the stuff out of the ground, where there was nothing, now there is gold, oil, coal, iron, silver, lead, zinc and much more. Wealth created by mining and farming – the two primary industries which are the foundation of our lives and our economies. The taxes, applied to this wealth by Governments, pay for the services Governments provide… The cash generated by this wealth creation provides employment which, in rotation, provides opportunities to purchase houses, motor vehicles etc. And, here is why it all became weird folks. These young socialists, transported into intellectual uplands by media infatuation of the Aderns, the Corbyns, the Sanders, the OccasionalCortezes and the Shortens are going to ban mining, attack farming as exploitation of the soil, create energy systems from wind, tides and other fairy-like fantasies, thus reducing the consumption of oil etc. In fact, these young Socialist are attacking the very nature of their capacity to re-distribute anything! Without the tax revenue generated from wealth creation, there will be no wealth, assets and other ‘ stuff ‘ to redistribute. And without their capacity to re-distribute, in a ‘ new and fair ‘ way, their idealism and enthusiasm will come to nothing, except Venezuela. As Cranky Lizard found out many years ago, on a remote property, new ideas and systems need to be tempered with reality and gauged by experience – as it was then, it is now. No sovereign state, no nation, no tribe, no collection of humans have ever successfully taxed their way into wealth. No nation, no sovereign state has ever been successfully governed by socialism. None. Socialism does not work. What a shame, and how frustrating it is – to watch yet another generation of idealistic youth learn life’s bitter lessons. Enjoy your days.

An assistance dog differs from a companion dog. Companion dogs are not recognised under Australian law and are not guaranteed access under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act.

An Assistance Dog is trained to help the veteran in public and is guaranteed access to all public areas including shopping centres, hospitals, public transport and restaurants. Training is conducted weekly at centres located in Brisbane. Tamworth, NSW, and Melton, Victoria. Young Diggers Assistance dog “Muster” wearing the current authorised jacket that identifies an assistance dog.

Young Diggers

Young Diggers is a non-profitable organisation formed in 2010 with Diggers from 6RAR, who returned to Brisbane after MTF (Multi Transitional Force) Afghanistan. Today the organisation has over 500 members Australia wide and 15,000 followers on Facebook and is active in five Australian states. The aim of Young Diggers is to provide support, information, education and practical programs to ex-serving ADF members, giving them the tools to ensure a good quality of life. Young Diggers also provides Advocate and Welfare support for veterans to process their claims for disabilities through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Prior to gaining access to the program, members and their dog are assessed for suitability for training as an Assistance Dog. Suitability includes the member’s clinical diagnosis of either PTSD or other mental health issues, home environment and ability to look after the dog. Other factors include whether they have other pets and their ability to attend training to lastly progress to PAT (Public Access Test) assessment. Young Diggers uses registered assessors at present while they wait on their registration of assessors. The assessments are done at a local training centre or by a local trainer. There are a number of trainers across Australia to help members with their training. The program does not have a ready supply of dogs however, but they can access dogs from breeders and in some cases members provide their own dog after assessment. Any breed of dog is eligible as long as it passes assessment.

Australia’s loss, New Zealand’s gain

In October last year I wrote about a Hazara Afghan man who became a family friend. This story is about another Hazara, Ali, who owes his life to Arne Rinnan, the captain of the Norwegian container ship MV Tampa. In August, 2001, Rinnan rescued 433 refugees, including Ali, from an Indonesian fishing vessel he found struggling in international waters. This happened about 140 kilometres north of Christmas Island. Many of the asylum seekers on board the ship were in poor health. Over 48 hours, Rinnan made repeated requests to Australian authorities for assistance. These requests were acknowledged but not acted on. The Australian Government of Australia refused permission for the Norwegian freighter to enter Australian waters. They advised Rinnan that he was in ‘flagrant breach’ of the law but despite this, he believed it was his duty to head towards Christmas Island. Australian authorities 45 Special Air Service (SAS) troops were dispatched to board the ship and prevent it from sailing any closer. Ali and the others were taken to the island of Nauru in the Pacific. I wonder if this captain knows that one of the men he rescued later became a Justice of the Peace in New Zealand. Ali had fled Afghanistan to escape the Taliban, which targeted Hazara people. He left behind his wife and son, hoping to send for them once he’d reached safety. In the Nauru detention camp, he became spokesperson for other detainees when Australian politicians visited the island. I corresponded with Ali while he was there. When my husband and I were married in

Turmeric plant Curcuma longa is a member of the Zingiberaceae family along with other well known spices such as ginger, galangal, and cardamom. It is native to South East Asia, where it is commonly used not only for cooking but also for its extensive medicinal properties. First, I am so happy to write to you after you are married and I hope and wish to you start your lovely life with each other, so I am praying for you all to be successful in your life together. Thanks for your kind feelings that you have about our Hazara people. I pray that one day the world will practice the real teaching of Mohammad, Jesus and Buddha to love each other. After being in detention for three years, during which time he was unable to contact his family back in Afghanistan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) interviewed Ali and judged him to be a genuine refugee. New Zealand then agreed to take him. Red Cross helped him find his parents. They and Ali’s siblings moved to New Zealand several years later, under the Family Reunification Program. Ali thought his wife and son may have fled to one of the countries close to Afghanistan. As a NZ citizen, he was able to return to the Middle East so he flew to Iran and Pakistan but his search was in vain. He now thinks they are dead. Ali studied at two universities in Wellington. He developed the necessary skills to work with the Red Cross Refugee Services which aimed to help communities develop economic independence. To expedite his work in assisting the community, Ali became a Justice of the Peace in Wellington. We didn’t meet him face to face until we visited NZ a few years later, when we were welcomed by his family and treated to a delicious meal of rice with grated carrot and currants, salad, lamb, eggs, unleavened bread, fruit and more. Ali eventually married again and has a delightful young daughter. His siblings all have jobs and are contributing to society. Wellington has gained energetic, honourable and skilled citizens.

Or you could think of the vitamin C rather than the orange. It’s the active constituent. Curcumin on its own has poor bioavailability. This means the body cannot easily absorb and utilise it on its own. As it is fat soluble it is normally combined with healthy fats which greatly enhances absorption. It is also combined with black pepper to enhance absorption. The piperine in black pepper actually helps to stop the enzymes from the liver filtering out the turmeric, which then allows it to get into the blood stream. Practical ways to enhance the absorption of turmeric are to have coconut milk in your turmeric latte, or have turmeric with your veges with quality oils and black pepper. Or add to yogurt for a delicious dipping sauce. Absorption is also further increased when it is fermented. Curcumin has been used in Ayurvedic, Western Herbal and Traditional Chinese medicines for centuries as an: Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Antibacterial and as a Hepatoprotective Used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Alertness and Memory and also for joint conditions, digestive and liver conditions, skin diseases and wounds, cardiovascular support, cancer, cognitive conditions. Hundreds of studies have been done on Turmeric in the areas of depression, cardiovascular conditions, neuroinflammation, depression, wound

healing, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, arthritis, diabetes, the list goes on and on. Turmeric in clinical doses has been shown to be as effective as medications such as anti-depressants (also used with saffron), cholesterol medications, diabetes medications, blood thinning medications and of course anti-inflammatories. It has also been shown to be effective as an adjunct treatment with PPIs , antidepressants and pain killers. As with any medication, pharmaceutical or natural it is essential to consult your health care practitioner to see if this is right for you.

Most people know Amazon as the world's biggest online store, but there are many things that the multibillion company does not want you to know, all companies have secrets, but could Amazon’s secret be the worst of them all? It is easy to make a joke about Amazon’s Alexa being some kind of spy, listening to everything you say and transmitting it back to her bosses to help them learn all about you. But in reality, that's exactly what she does.

Just like how google assistant stores everything you say on its server, ready to be played back at any time, Amazon also keeps a documentation of everything you say through Alexa. You may say this is a wild idea but a woman in Portland may make you rethink your decision.

Portland woman, Danielle, told a television news station in Washington that her Amazon Echo device had recorded a conversation and then shared it with one of her husband’s employees

in Seattle. People were swift to say we told you so, as the news report soared through the connected world. The family disconnected the devices and contacted Amazon, prompting an investigation. Now, Danielle is asking for a refund. “I’m never plugging that device in again,” she told reporters. “I can’t trust it.” Amazon responded and said that her Echo device “misunderstood” her words for a set of commands, telling it to record her whole conversation with her husband and send it to one of his employees. Amazon’s main home assistant device (Echo) is equipped with seven microphones and noise-cancelling technology. Amazon's Alexa is good at listening, since it must be prepared when you say its awaken word, like "Alexa" or “Echo,” but how do we know if it’s just listening to our every word? Amazon is snooping on you and your family in your home and gathering as much information on your activities as possible, but big question is what might Amazon be doing with your priceless private information. It could be as simple as listening for something that your thinking of buying and suddenly an Amazon ad pops up of exactly what you wanted, or It could be as bad as selling your private information online open to anyone, criminals, paedophiles or even a murder. Imagine your child walking home all by herself for the first time but never returning home. Who could it have been? How could they have known? Who was it? Maybe it was Alexa. In actuality we will never know the truth, we will never know the true secrets of Amazon. Even though there's no solid proof or confirmation that Amazon’s product Echo records every single conversation I would still rethink your decision before purchasing anything from Amazon.

Soils ain’t Soils

Landscape plant of the Month

Blowing in the wind!

Wow, this summer we had gone from hot and dry with no rainfall, to very humid- with temps hovering in the mid-thirties, to an onslaught of gale force winds from the effects and remnants of cyclone Oma, to a nice cool and comfortable 25 degrees with cloudy days and showery episodes throughout the day- (all in the last 4 weeks) but just as we start to enjoy the welcome cool change, we are hit with another sweltering week of high temps in the highthirties but- autumn at last- it is! Unfortunately, the rainfall we received to date as I write this column, has not been significant enough to hydrate our soils sufficiently, which soon became evident after I scraped back some mulch layers around the place and dug into the dry topsoil. Which is why having a good open mulch that allows rainfall to percolate down through to the soil level (when we do get it) where the plant roots are, is so important indeed. I have mentioned a few times about the perils of plastic weed matt layers on the soil surface and I will recap quickly- my reasoning; we have mostly sandy soils here on our Bribie island and local districts, and lots of these soils are also hydrophobic (water repellent and hard to wet) and if we want to convert our sandy- hydrophobic soil to a more fertile soil that will hold more moisture, then we need to either add compost, composted manures or organic mulch layers to the soil and apply irrigation to activate the soil biota (micro-organisms including earthworms) to break-down organic material (into humus) which becomes assimilated into the soil profile, providing plant available nutrients. So, when you have a plastic woven weed matt stretched across the soil surfacethe first thing that becomes evident, is how can you apply organic material such as compost to the soil profile? And the benefits of mulching become only a decorative feature and not a soil building exercise, due to the fact that the organic mulches can never touch the soil surface, and when the heavy rains do arrive, it usually tends to cascade off the weed matt as quick as it had pelted down. And as a result, that vital elixir of life- has simply dissipated away. Fortunately, there are better options when considering a weed barrier when building a new garden, such as the relatively new- weed fabric products, like ‘Weed Gunnel’, which is excellent for weed control and is able to absorb moisture while also having the benefits of breaking down overtime and is also a registered- Allowed Input (452A1)for organic gardening. And another brand- ‘Eco-Cover’, which is organic, compostable, and biodegradable, builds the soil carbon levels, conserves water and of course; controls the weeds too. These products are widely used in the horticultural, agricultural and land management industries and are more sustainable and environmentally friendly- in comparison to the polyethylene weaved plastic weed mats, that can starve the soil from oxygen, moisture and nutrients. And unfortunately take a long time to break down and may persist in the environment for many years to come. So, if your soil is hard to wet and you are waiting for the rains to hydrate your patch? Give yourself the best possible chance, add some organic matter, whether it be compost or composted manures to the soil profile and apply some tonics- like worm juice, and a layer of mulch- that will accept applied irrigation, then you will have made a great start to enlivening your soil- while building a bank of plant available nutrients, which will assist to sustain your plants through these tough environmental challenges well into the future.

Hibiscus Heterophylla‘Aussie Delight’

Hibiscus Heterophylla- ‘Aussie Delight’ is a native Hibiscus which has been cross breed from Hibiscus heterophyllus and Hibiscus divaricatus. ‘Aussie Delight’ is a delightful robust, fast-growing- evergreen shrub that grows to 1.5 to 2 metres tall and wide. The leaves are narrow but glossy, the flowers are pale-pink, and are produced from winter to spring with spot flowering the rest of the year. Hibiscus- ‘Aussie Delight’ tolerates a wide range of conditions and is drought tolerant once established and grows well in most soils and grows well here on Bribie Island and throughout Australia. The flowers attract bees, birds and butterflies. The flowers petals of ‘Aussie Delight’ can be used to make tea or Rosella jam. Herald the TrumpetsIt’s Autumn again!

Finally, and almost right on cue, the first week of autumn and temperatures are already receding, which makes gardening- so-much- more -pleasant! Don’t get too comfortable though! There is plenty to do now if you have the time, energy and ability. The lawns are starting to slow a little as the daylight hours becomes shorter but still plenty of time to over-sow those bare patches with grass seed or sods or perhaps lay some new strips of turf before the temperatures plummet in the next few months. Best to irrigate them thoroughly and regularly to maximise germination and to ensure the turf roots take hold. Also, a great time to control those pesky weeds that have set seed and flourished- while our lawns were set-back, during the recent dry spell of late.

Speaking of the dry spell; I mentioned last article about (dry patch) in turf, and to help solve this problem, we can add some soil wetting agents which will assist in breaking down the hydrophobic soil particles and allowing that vital moisture to penetrate through to the grass root systems once again. And the same philosophy applies to those hard to wet potted plants, when sometimes the water pools on the surface upon watering, instead of infiltrating through to the plants root system. When inspecting your potted plants soil media, it’s also a perfect opportunity to look for pests like ants or mealy bugs, that may have taken residence in and around the root system. Ants can form a water-repellent area as they nest among the plants roots and as a result, any applied irrigation may run straight through your potting soil without touching your plants roots at all. I like to gently flush the plants root system by placing the pot plant in a large tub or bucket of water until the air stops bubbling and the soil media becomes totally wet again. This process also helps to flood the ants out too. Beware though, sometimes hundreds of live ants will float to the surface in protest. Last month we had very strong winds which bombarded the whole east coast, and many plants, including our potted specimens, took quite a beating indeed, especially the large long leaved ones like the palms or Heliconia’s, as their foliage tends to catch the wind like a sail and tend to tear to shreds or dry out to a cinder in these conditions. Some plants I had come across had dropped most of their flowers, buds and fruits too. So, it’s a great time to inspect, clean and prune these plants back to shape now the weather is more agreeable and in preparation for the cooler months that lay ahead.

The time for planting

Autumn is an excellent time to plant out new plants in your garden as they will mostly save their energy to expand their roots as they anchor into the soil profile in the cooler months that lay ahead. And by next spring, these plants tend to often surprise us with a welcome surge of wonderful new foliage, flowers, buds and fruits. I like to fertilise my fruit trees, ornamentals and veggie plants with regular applications of an organic blend of composted manures, worm castings and seaweed tonics each new season or when planting out new plants. These breakdown slowly and feed the plants over time without forcing any unnecessary new flushes of the foliage, at the expense -of the developing root systems energy reserves. After gardening throughout the hot summer months, working now- in autumn, is a welcome relief indeed. Until next issue-

It's that time of the year where all of the local schools hold their induction ceremonies for their new batch of student leaders. I've been visiting as many local schools as I can to celebrate their successes - and I have to say that I've been very impressed by the calibre and leadership on display by the classes of 2019. I'm proud to be sticking up for a fair go for these students and their schools, by guaranteeing them fair funding under a Shorten Labor Government. When I visited Beachmere State School for their ceremony recently, it was great to be able to tell them that their school will receive an extra $340,000 under Labor.

March 2019 Fishing Report

Fishing has continued to be a little quiet in the past month. The summer has brought less than 25% of its usual rainfall and most of the winds have continued to be easterlies. Storm season in SE Qld should be bringing unsettled afternoons, with south-easterlies and downpours. Cyclone Oma did manage to muddy things up a little, which made the fish a little livelier, and occasional rain has fallen.

Time

The baitfish are now out in good numbers, and the winds have pushed a lot of them up into the Pumicestone Passage. The big tides that coincided with Oma’s travel down our coast also helped to lure the baitfish further up the Passage.

Of course, following the bait have been some good-sized fish. Grassy sweetlip have been taking lures and fresh bait, particularly as you get further north. Ningi Creek hasn’t been showing much of anything lately but Poverty Creek and the 112s are holding a few good grassy sweetlip. Flathead have also been giving Ningi Creek a miss, it probably just needs a couple of days of real rain, to flush it out and freshen it up. The better fishing for flathead has been on the rising tide, on the sandbar north of the Avon wreck and up around White Patch. Sam’s dusky flathead was a just respectable 42cm, caught using prawns, drifting off the Banksia Beach boat ramp.

Prawn baits have yielded improving results lately. The prawn season has been very slow this summer, again because of good weather, poor rains and winds from the wrong quarter. Over the past week, prawning has picked up well and that has encouraged the flathead and the bream, who don’t mind chasing prawns – either the real thing or lightweighted plastics.

Mangrove jack are another fish that have been found further up the Passage lately, Elimbah Creek being a place to try for them. The ones we see here are the juveniles; they’re brought in by tide and wind as larvae in Spring and enjoy Bribie’s hospitality until they’re about 8 years old. A really good-sized mangrove jack in the Passage would be about 40cm; like snapper, they have to be over 35cm to be legal. Mangrove jack like live baits – whiting are a good choice but make sure they’re legal size. A solid hard-body lure will also work with them, one that drops down to where the jack is waiting in his hideout. Mullet strips or a whole mullet butterfly-filleted make an attractive bait for mangrove jack. Use a little bit

This catch came from South of the bridge, on a rising tide of weight, a biggish hook and make sure the barb is all the way through the mullet. Then cast downstream and let the bait drift towards some snaggy mangrove roots. If you’re fishing out in the Passage, try casting down-tide towards pylons or along the side of the water - near the end of Warrigal Street is a handy spot. The canals are another great place to go for mangrove jack; they love hiding under the floating pontoons or near the revetment walls. As the days start to cool a little, so will the water, which will cheer up the bream, flathead and whiting. Late afternoons, when the wind has dropped, and the tide has bottomed out – what better time to cast out and try your luck. All we need is a bit more of that rain…

To use prawn-lures, cast over the water and bring them skipping back near the top. Hanging out under the Bribie end of the bridge, when the tide is just starting to run should work well, especially early mornings or evenings, when the prawns are often busiest.

Another bait that has been catching fish lately is the ever-reliable squid. Often favoured for fishing with young kids, because it stays on the hook well, it has been proving itself with flathead, stingrays and snapper (which are still mostly too small to keep at this time of year). Paul and his boys had a successful afternoon on squid recently, up at the north end of White Patch, on the rising tide.

PUMICESTONE’S MAJOR CONNECTING ROAD IS UNDER STRESS AND IN NEED OF URGENT UPGRADES. Bribie Island Road and Bridge has not kept pace with the significant growth in tourism and developments that has taken place in the Pumicestone Electorate over the past 5 to 10 years. Bribie Island Road is the main connecting route that takes people to work, brings them home to their family and loved ones and is a lifeline for local businesses and tourism in our area. Most weekends we can’t move around due to traffic congestion. Forget Public Holidays, it’s total chaos and grid lock. To rub salt into our wounds, the current State Government thinks Bribie Island Bridge is ok left as it is until 2031 – one lane on and one lane off the Island, pedestrians and cyclists too bad! It is time for this Government to invest in Pumicestone’s future, acknowledge our needs and fix this problem - NO MORE DELAYS!

FIGHTING FOR FUNDING I’ve been fighting for the major infrastructure investment we need to upgrade Bribie Island Road and Bridge that so many rely on every day – upgrades to reduce congestion and travel times and improve safety for all users. There hasn’t been much spent of this road in over a decade, but the Labor State Government will have us think otherwise. Despite the Bribie Island Road and Bridge being part of the State Controlled Road Network, it took the Federal Government, in July last year, to acknowledge our urgent need to fix priority pinch points like the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection and they gave us $20 million to do so. The truth is that this money is still sitting in Canberra as we wait for the State Labor Government to do its part. Despite my constant advocacy to get these funds on the ground in our electorate now, Transport Minister Mark Bailey has still not put pen to paper to Canberra. Why? Mark Bailey you have some serious questions to answer. Tell us also why you have stripped $1million in allocated funding on a planning phase for Bribie Island Road and then pushed back completion timeframes by a year on this project. Tell us why Old Toorbul Point Road intersection traffic lights are still not in – and tell us why nothing has progressed since 2014 on the work needed for a new Bribie Island Bridge and you are happy for us to wait until 2031 before anything is done.
