So, there it began 57 books written about Bribie Island history by Warwick Outram. What an amazing achievement and we can all be thankful to this extraordinary man, for giving us our regions history to read and leave a legacy for our future generations. Warwick was taught at a very young age that we all should know about our regions history where we live.

Warwick Outram was a hero in our region and I was extremely fortunate to have Warwick email all his books to me for us to publish in the ISLAND and Surrounds Community Newspaper. Thank you so much Warwick for your advice and feedback on my paper and for allowing me to publish your work. History Snippets by Warwick Outram will continue, however Warwick’s books can also be sourced from the Bribie Island Library, the Royal Historical Society, The National Library in Canberra and Queensland University ensuring the information is available for our future generations.

As Warwick was experienced in writing for newspapers locally, I asked him for some advice. He said that it was all about our readers and articles and history of this beautiful place is a key part of a successful local newspaper.

History Snippets

A Very Early Family Mike Harris wrote a paper dated 24 July 2015, about his grandmother, titled “Florence Ann Bowles, her early life on Bribie Island and her later years.” He commenced” These are memories of my late maternal grandmother Florence Anne Bowles (married name; Florence Ann Gregg) that she related to me many years ago”. The Bribie Island Historical Society has the full paper but thanks to them and Mike Harris a few extracts follow. Mike’s grandmother, whom he called Nan, was one of ten children (five boys and five girls) from the marriage in 1889 of Anne Sigley and William Bowles who lived on South Stradbroke Island. He wrote “Nan’s father was offered the job of managing the Bribie Island Oyster leases owned by James Clark, also known as “The Pearling King of the Northern Territory”. In 1890 the whole family joined their father on the island after he took up the position with James Clark’s Oyster Company.... It should also be noted that oystering at Bribie Island in the 1890’s was Queensland’s largest industry. “Nan’s family lived in a timber homestead on the island, in the vicinity of Poverty Point, near the creek there (directly across Pumicestone Passage from the present-day township of Donnybrook). The workers employed on the oyster leases came from the mainland and

were housed separately nearby. Nan said there was only other permanent settler on the island at that time, besides her family. She did mention his name but I have since forgotten it”. The ‘Bribie Star’ The ‘Bribie Star’ reported Mr. Reg Campbell telling of a hair raising experience for anybody caught on the southern portion of Bongaree at the wrong time. “From 1906 to 1911 the Royal Australian Naval Reserve carried out annual gunnery practice for ‘HMAS Gayundah’ off Bribie Island. Targets were erected in Horseshoe Bay, just opposite where Mr. Gazard’s home now (1963) stands in Webster Street, and the Gayundah anchored near the Deception Bay beacon.” “In the year 1905 our family set sail, in the cutter Salina from Hayes Inlet,… for our new home at the mouth of Ninghi Creek, Pumicestone Channel. Our near neighbours were Mr. C. Dean and Mr. Fred Turner. Other families in the area were the Days, Bestmanns, Bastings, and still further up Ninghi Creek were the families Freeman, Davis, Dux and Bishop. Mr. Harry Wright lived on Bribie Island, Mr. W. Mohr and J. Gallagher lived at Whitepatch, Mr. H Bowles lived at Mission Point of HMAS Gyundah and a little further up the Passage was Mr. T. Tripcony. Mr. August Williamson and Mr. C Bardon were at Donnybrook.” Of the area’s industry Mr. Campbell said, “Oystering was the foremost industry… and the main oyster lessees were James Clark, Moreton Bay Oyster Company, J Markwell and T. Tripcony.

Apart from oystering, there was also dairy farming, and a good deal of log timber was handled in and around Toorbul and Bribie Island. All goods from Bribie Island were carried by J Clark’s ’SS Sunset’, and later the ‘SS Sunrise’, the Moreton Bay Oyster Company’s schooner ‘Sir Arthur’, and later still by auxiliary cutters ‘Result’ and ‘Caloola’.” Reg Campbell described the passenger unloading procedure. “Tying a rope to a tree and to the ship, enabled a square-end punt, with seats all round, to be hauled from the ship to shore and back. This embarkation point was just opposite where today stands the Bongaree Caravan Park office and shop.” Bongaree 1906 The rusty hulk of HMAS Gayundah at the foot of the cliffs at Woody Point. Letters to the Editor... Reply to Stewart’s letter Fri. 28th July 2017 (Bribie Weekly?) In response to Stewart’s (Hood ) observations re: the road through Ningi to the bridge to Bribie. Actually they were mature trees that were felled. This is a coastal swamp area that is growing very close to the Ningi Creek. I would also suggest that Stewart, like a lot of people (possibly newcomers to this area), who drive that road, essentially would not have paid much if any attention to what was growing there, what sort of environment they were passing through. Suffice to say, it would just be “bush” to them, and like a lot of people, they were just trees that were in the way of “progress”, so remove them. How much further will the Dept. of Main Roads be allowed to encroach now that they have reached the outer limit where the mangroves grow. I could not get a straight answer out of this bureaucratic entity, and an approach to speak to the local MP was met with equal discourteousness, disrespect, and evasiveness when I began my inquiries. Four lanes to the bridge - then what? What bridge? Does it not occur to you that the infrastructure and the money it would entail, was and has never been configured properly for this island just off the coast. So many Bribie people have their own theories as to how to solve this “problem” but then there are those that are now bemoaning the fact that the pristine quiet lifestyle that is often mentioned is slowly declining as more people flock here. It is also forgotten that Ningi and Sandstone Point residents may be impacted by crappy decisions made by pen pushers. Type in “Ningi Bypass” into a search engine and if you care to read the Media Statements… Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Paul Lucas……………………… UMPIRE RULES ON NINGI BYPASS Mind you this is now a 10 year old statement………………………..! As you are, Stewart, entitled to your opinion, so am I. Suffice to say, for me, the environment is of more importance, to be looked after, than the whims of progress pushers. Elizabeth Cambra

I AGREE WITH MARK ROBERTS! I hundred percent agree with Mark Roberts that it is a shame that no politician really does stick out his/her neck to put a concrete plan on the table when it comes to the population limit for Bribie Island and the restoration of the National Park into a real National Park with only Indigenous trees and bush and to get rid of the Pine trees. I came to the Island in 2000 and have walked the Island from South to North and from West to East but did not see any Kangaroo nor any Emu’s and hardly any bird life although we did notice Kangaroo foot prints. I believe it is time that the people of Bribe Island should make it clear to the present elected politicians Rick Williams, Susan Lamb and Brooke Savige and possible future politicians whether it being State Parliament, Local Government or Council that the Islanders want to see action with regards to the subjects mentioned above. I do not believe that we need a second bridge as this will only fuel the desire from developers to lobby the politicians to make more land available for housing projects and as a result more destruction of natural forest and bushland. The present bridge is coping with the todays traffic and so is the Bribie Island Road. We our self do create the demand for

a second bridge and widening of the Bribe Island Road by allowing the developers having it their way and with regards to the politicians not to stand firm that enough is enough. Let us join hands and follow up the suggestion by Mark Roberts to write a yes or no to the Editor.I would suggest that the Island and Surrounds Newspaper print a form in their next issue for this purpose.

Jan van Arnhem I was disturbed and angry when I read Mark Robert’s letter last month. What he had uncovered reeked of government deceit. I call on Rick Williams to tell us – Is this felling of native forest on Bribie and replacement with commercial pine still happening? And when was the last time it occurred? I support Mark’s proposition that sites of current pine plantations be restored to native forest. We cannot keep destroying nature to make money. Sandra Bayley Toorbul

I intend to vote for the person I believe will best represent the issues I think are important as a resident in the area Dear Editor I was happy to read your important message concerning political material relating to the upcoming state elections. I was also interested to read the letter from Ms Simone Wilson, LNP Candidate for Pumicestone, indulging in a bit of electioneering in the guise of an answer to a letter from a A. Voter in your previous edition. (I wonder, was A. Voter a ring-in ?) First, a bit of good old bashing of the current government by Ms Wilson. I would just like to remind her that it was the LNP’s own Campbell Newman’s government who put them there. Still, a bit of the old hyperbole and sinking in of the old boot causes immense pleasure to rusted on party members - of both persuasions. There is no question that Bribie Island Road is becoming a serious problem as far as congestion is concerned, however I would have thought the need for traffic lights at the Peel Road intersection with Bribie Island Road was a no brainer. I’m sure anyone driving on a regular basis from Beachmere would agree. I would, however not like to see traffic lights at the Old Torbul Road intersection but I do realise there may be no other solution. The lights at Alyward Road do not cause much of a problem - in fact, as one who drives to Brisbane four or five times a week, I cannot really say that the current traffic lights cause me any problem - at 80kph as I have a few too many speeding fines. I can see, however that many who still drive at 100kph regard the lights a nuisance and a drain on their brakes. The residents of Peel Road are having sleepless nights due to the new traffic lights, and “their whole lives have been turned upside down”. As one who lived for many years near traffic lights in the city and barely ever noticed their effect on my life, I had to chuckle at this one. It is easy to promise to fight for a dual carriageway to the Bribie bridge, and for a bridge duplication. I’m sure every candidate in the upcoming election will do the same, but empty words are easy. We will see if anything comes of such promises, I’ve heard them before. Finally, I am happy to see that Ms Wilson intends to be a hard worker for the rights and issues raised by residents, just as I am sure Mr Rick Williams will do. I did not have much luck with Ms France while she was the member for Pumicestone and was

I have dealt with Mr Williams on a few occasions and have been quite satisfied with his support. As an aside I wrote several letters to Wyatt Roy during the time he was our Federal Member and not once received an acknowledgement or reply. I intend to vote for the person I believe will best represent the issues I think are important as a resident in the area. I expect all candidates to play the issues and not the individual or the party. Cheap shots. A MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE I for one am tired of being bullied by Telstra/ NBN. It would certainly seem that this marriage of convenience is not a happy one – well they rarely are! Convenient for the moment – yes, happy – rarely! From the moment the NBN was available in Woorim the bullying began. It came in the form of phone calls, letters and SMS messages with varying information, different dates yet that constant theme – do something or else we will cut you off – your fixed phone will be no more. And so the package was ordered. However on our return from Darwin some weeks ago we found a message on our phone inhibiting our ability to ring out. The message said to contact NBN urgently as our service would finish soon. It takes approximately three minutes to run. When I asked for this message to be removed the answer was ‘no’. It would be, I was told, when the NBN package was complete – well the order was completed several weeks ago and still the message remains. It impedes ringing out so much that I was moved to ask who would be responsible if there was a tragedy and I could not contact triple 0 easily. No-one seemed to know the answer to that one. I contacted the Telephone Ombudsman to ask if they could arrange for the message to be taken off. Well of course they will help – that is their role – yet hang on a minute – it will take 10 days before they even get to look at the problem. And so we are underway with the implementation of a so called upgrade to our telecommunication system – small business continues to be badly affected and individuals struggle along to manage as best they can. Livelihoods are impeded and still no-one does anything. It will be interesting to see if the marriage of convenience between copper and digital wire works out – I hope it does for all our sakes – however I can’t help but be a little cynical – and yes, please, whilst I am at it will someone out there please do something about taking that message off our home phone? Please Inform us? On June 9th, 2017, the Bribie Weekly published a photograph of our councillors at the 2016-2017 budget release meeting. At that time, it was released that by the end of the next financial year council will have budget surplus of nearly $60 million. Having so much money in the coffers, would my representative (Brooke Savige) inform the elderly constituents why the chisel $30 annually from these pensioners for the privilege of have a desexed, trained and house bound cat as a pet and companion. I am led to believe that the Moreton Bay Regional Council is the only one in Queensland applying for this form of taxation on its elderly electors. Bernie Kiernan Bellara

Rangers Putting the Fear in Locals I am a pensioner who tries to be active as much as possible, however I do have a steel rod in my leg which can affect me walking my dog on a lead. I am unable to get down to Red Beach and Woorim Dog beach which is where the only off-leash areas are at the southern end of Bribie Island. There was a submission put to our Cr Brooke Savige to allow the Bongaree Forshaw at certain hours of the day from 7.00pm till 7.00am on the beach to allow dogs to be able to have a swim and a run around. I and others believe these times are very reasonable and would not interfere with most people on the beach, based on there is no-one on the beach or Forshaw at those times and Cr Savige advised at a meeting when she collected the petition of people for this, that she would table it at the next council meeting in early June. Cr Savige also advised there would be a consultation with local residence. It is now October and while we chased Cr Savige to see where she was up to she really didn’t have any information for us. On the 21st of August, a letter arrived from Wes Mortensen, Coordinator – Park & Recreation Planning, Engineering Construction and Maintenance advising they have requested a consideration with the DEHP (Department of Environment and Heritage Protection) for an off-leash area at Banksia Beach Solander Esplanade and one at Sylvan Beach. Our request was for Bongaree where most of us gather early in the morning between 5.00am and 6.00am. I am very disappointed in Cr Savige for handing our request over to another department and not communicating with her constituents after the letter came out. This month I had a nasty experience with one of her Rangers who wanted to fine me early in the morning for not having my dog on the leash, however it was pointed out to him that he does need to give us an official warning, of which he said he did give us one and it was lost in the mail!!!! He blamed Australian Post that it had been lost for 3 months. Haha!!!! He advised there were off leash areas down the road (which is about 5 kilometres away), and my response was what happens if I am unable to get down on the beach, to walk on the sand path down there or the sand on the beach from my steel rod in my leg also most seniors are in motor scooters are also not able to access this off-leash area, he response was that “he didn’t know what they could do”. So, the Council are discriminating clearly with seniors who are not able access these areas and most don’t have a car to get to those areas and only use their motor scooters to get around. After speaking to many locals in Bongaree and Woorim, they all say the same thing that the local rangers are now harassing dog owners and putting the fear in them which is totally unacceptable. The tickets they write up say dogs not under control and this clearly is incorrect as most off leash dogs are fully under control and do not leave their owners side and my encounter with the ranger while he was lecturing me was my dog was sitting next to me while I was chatting to some friends. She was completely under control and not bothering one single person. The council are now only revenue raising with pet owners and they have become extremely nasty with the way they speak to you. When are they going to learn how to speak to the locals

I’m not a politician. I’m not an historian

I’m an Aussie So, this is how this Aussie sees it. Agree or not is up to you. I see the deficit go up and up, I see the pensioners eat dog food to keep their houses they own. I see the people invest in super and watch it disappear. I watch the devastation of the global financial crisis. But yet their own banks kept on making billions of dollars, all of them???? With a little research, I worked out something you may or may not agree with, and my facts may be arguable but are to my point. In the early 1900’s the government of Andrew Fisher started the reserve bank and the commonwealth bank. I believe it was to stop the monopoly the big banks were having at our people’s expense. Great idea it kept the banks in tow, with the Commonwealth Bank interest banks is what I am on about, The reserve bank set a rate and the Commonwealth Bank put on a bit to make a quid. Like 1.5%

Now!!!!! In about 1987 Mr Hawk and Mr Keating sold the commonwealth bank. Since then I see the major banks don’t really pay much attention to the toothless tiger Reserve Bank anymore instead they make billions even in the GFC. So why doesn’t the government start another Australian owned bank to keep the rest of them in tow and make our credit cards 5% and our housing loans 3% and still make a healthy profit so our government can say to their people that are retiring, no need to pay rates, no need to pay unity water, no need to pay electricity or transport or medical and just use your small pension for food and live and enjoy smelling the roses….. you have earnt it!!!! When I arrived at Moreton Bay Equine Vets, I was welcomed by the friendly team and lead through a beautiful old home which is undergoing a major transformation into a contemporary multifunctional veterinarian practice. Moreton Bay Equine Veterinarian Practice is located at D’Aguilar, a rural township about 1 hours’ drive north of Brisbane surrounded by the D’Aguilar National Park and Mountain Ranges. I was taken into a treatment room which is in the final phase of being fitted out as one of the central clinical spaces. The room is populated with veterinarian medical practice books, pre-fitted taps, polished floors ready for a new covering, paperwork and design drawings resting on the table. The view from the clinic is breathtaking and stretches across mountainous country as far as the eye can see. After about 30 minutes of self-reflection and trying not to put myself in the paws of a cat patient, in walked the man himself, Dr Trent Rayburn. I will refer to Dr Trent Raeburn in this story as either Dr Trent or The Doc. When I met Dr Trent, he had been on the job since the early hours of the morning tending to an emergency callout. To his credit, The Doc admitted to feeling a bit jaded but was keen to have a

It was these experiences as a young man that secured his passion for the outdoors, animals and science.

It was after his locum experience that Dr Trent decided to launch his own business,

Moreton Bay Equine Vets. Moreton Bay Equine Vets was established as a mobile equine and small animal service. Initially Dr Trent had a business motto that read, ‘Every Animal – Anywhere – Anytime.’ Initially the practice was small enough to operate with Dr Trent and his Partner, who is also a Vet Nurse. These days, the practice has grown to the point where the business now employs 4-5 full time Vets, two nurses and reception staff. They also have four mobile clinic vehicles on the road and operate 2-3 Vets across the week

Dr Trent said, “Although our Vets must be confident and experienced Equine and large animal Vets, we provide a diverse animal Vet Service treating Horses, Alpacas, Cows, Ducks, Sheep, Goats, cats, dogs and other small animals.” he said, “We are currently about to open our new clinic in D’Aguilar, Queensland which will provide a dedicated small animal clinic, horse hospital with operating theatre and recovery stables.” Dr Trent said, “Although we can refer large animals to the specialist clinic in Gatton, Queensland, there is a strong need to provide a specialised animal and horse hospital in this region.” He said,” These days, our service extends north to Sippy Downs, West to Kilcoy, east to Bribie Island and south to Eagle Farm. Our new clinic will allow owners to bring their horse and animals to us for treatment and provide a monitoring service on-site.” Like any successful professional, Dr Trent Rayburn has all the personal attributes of confidence, energy, competitive spirit, compassion and a consistent approach to mentoring new Vets and developing his teams. He said, “The most important person in this business is the person that answers the phone and clarifies the need of the customer. At the end of the day, people

want good consistent service in a timely manner delivered by competent teams.” Dr Trent and I chatted for about an hour before he invited me to accompany him on a clinical visit to a local stud. Remembering that at the time this story was written, it was foaling season so our mobile clinical visit was everything about Mares, foals, female parts, bowls and bottoms, ovaries, disappearing arms, long arm gloves, ultra-sounds, infections, wash-outs, needles and minor surgery. The Doc’s mobile vehicle is equipped for every possible emergency and planned intervention. The trailer is complete with a Horse Crush, weighing system, power, lighting, diagnostic ultrasound, X ray machines and every surgical toy that a Veterinarian would need. In fact, I decided to keep my back to the wall to make sure I wasn’t confused for an animal, especially given the speed at which the Doc loaded and unloaded those needles. I am not sure whether the fact that I helped carry a few bags made for an efficient clinical outcome on that day, however I must say the clinical intervention and execution was all over in about 45 minutes which I rated a 10.5/10. I know you are wondering how the Doc gained the extra .5 point? Simple really, he managed to perform a complimentary 5-minute knee assessment of a 1-year old horse in the adjoining paddock on the way out and delivered an antibiotic prescription to the trainer via the car window as we drive toward the gate. Dr Trent said, “Not every

visit or intervention goes smoothly. The difference between working from a clinic with small animals in comparison to large animals is that you need to be confident with large animals and have good clinical skills – you can’t simply refer to a text or PC.” Dr Trent said, “When you have the owner or trainer beside you, there is no time for wondering – you need to treat with confidence and efficiency especially considering that in many cases, these animals are worth a lot of money.” Dr Trent said, “I invest in carrying the latest in diagnostic equipment and employ Vets with small and large animal experience. I also make sure that I spend at least 6-8 weeks with new Vets to ensure they have the confidence to ride and treat horses.” Dr Trent said, “Sometimes you have to get on a horse and ride it to understand what is actually going on with a horse. I have learnt over the years that you must always provide Best Practice rather than saving money and cutting corners on treatment.” Dr. Trent Raeburn is a man on a mission looking forward to opening a new diversified Moreton Bay Equine Vet Clinic and beginning the process of providing a regional one-stop-shop Veterinarian Service. The Doc tells me that he enjoys his days-off from the practice and thrives on a good fishing expedition in his boat off Mooloolaba or tucking into a feed of Bangers and Mash accompanied by a decent drop of regional style wine from all the best places including the Barossa, Clare Valley and Coonawarra. It was a pleasure to have a close encounter with such a professional clinician and entrepreneur. New Toastmasters Entertain the Club

As September is the start of the Toastmasters competition season, Bribie Toastmasters have recently held their Club contest and have six members competing at the Area conference on Sunday the 24th of September at Sandstone Point. They are all looking forward to representing Bribie in the Area and hopefully beyond!

Bribie Toastmasters have been enjoying interesting and entertaining speeches from two of our newer members Chris and Anne. At recent meetings, they have both been voted by the members, as having given the Best Speech of the evening. Chris is receiving her certificate from the Bribie Toastmasters President Don Crombie with Anne being awarded both the Best speech and Most Entertaining speech by Toastmaster for the evening Jock Elliott at the club meeting held on Tuesday the 19th of September. All members are encouraged and supported as they learn to expand their public speaking in an environment that makes it easy to relax and feel

When he later graduated as a Pharmacist and married his nurse girlfriend Anne in 1960, he purchased the one small Pharmacy business on Bribie Island and set up shop in Toorbul Street. Over the next 50 years Don moved the growing Pharmacy business to other locations in First Avenue and later to Benebrow Avenue, where with his business partners he developed new commercial premises. As well as being the only “go to” person on the island for heath and emergency needs, he involved himself in many community projects and committees as a willing volunteer. He served on the Volunteer Fire Brigade, Ambulance, ANZAC Committee, RSL sub branch, State School P&C, Catholic Church, Caboolture Rotary, Meals on Wheels and developed the Bribie Island Golf Club. He was also invited to be Patron of Chamber of Commerce, RSL, Golden Age and the Bribie Island Golf Club…..

Both Don and Anne are still very active in the community and have contributed much to the success of the Historical Society.

Founder of the Bribie Island Historical Society, Barry Clark, conducted a filmed interview with Don a few months ago to capture, first hand, Dons recollections of life on Bribie over the past 80 years or so. This video recording was then edited by past President Graham Mills with the addition of several hundred old photos from the Historical Society Database collection, illustrating the subjects spoken about by Don during the interview. The large crowd also paid tribute to Warwick Outram who died last week after more than 40 years, writing more than 50 books about Bribie Island history, and also contributing to many of the same organisations as Don. Warwick Outram was invited to be the inaugural Patron of the Historical Society and has left a lasting legacy of the rich history of the island. We are reminded of how much some of the long-term island residents have contributed to the wonderful community facilities we enjoy here today. Coffee with a Cop comes to Beachmere! Beachmere’s Beach Shak Cafe is the newest venue for “Coffee with a Cop” an initiative of the Queensland Police Service. On Thursday, 19 October, members of the Queensland Police Service will be in Beachmere to “promote, encourage, engage and enjoy conversation with local members of the Beachmere Community.” A special thanks to owner of the Beach Shak Café, Amanda Waters, who will host this event every third Thursday of the month from 10am.

Residents have been working hard to secure a branch of the Bendigo Bank for Beachmere and the Pledge Fund was launched in early September. I understand there has been substantial community support and it was great to meet the Bank’s Steering Committee.

A big thanks also to Senior Constable Clair Parsons, our local Police Liaison Officer, for making this event happen.

On another note, there is just so much happening in Beachmere and I would like to firstly congratulate the Beachmere Sands Retirement Village for their outstanding efforts at their fundraising event Monster Garage Sale. A massive $8,000 was raised and handed to the SES and Queensland Fire Services. A huge thank you to everyone involved.

Our Bribie Island Coaches Bus Driver, Andrew Formosa is a hero after resuscitating a man at a bus stop on his bus route 642. Andrew saw a man collapsed at the bus stop and rushed to his aid. He performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The gentleman is doing well and will be released from hospital soon Thank you, Andrew, for your dedication and caring attitude.

Beachmere Sands Retirement Village handed over $7000 to Bribie Island SES and the Elimbah / Donnybrook Rural Fire Brigade. This was the proceeds from the Monster Garage Sale they held. What a fantastic result for the hard work of the Beachmere Sands Community, well done everyone! I also gifted $1,000.00 split between both groups to help with the great work the volunteers do for our community.

Bribie & District Woodcrafters Grant

Congratulations to Bribie Island Netball Club who had five teams playing in Grand Finals on September 2. They finished the day with four grand final championships and one runner up. Well Done, girls. A fantastic achievement.

Bribie & District Woodcrafters are a wonderful group that keep our community active learning new skills. This $19,756.00 State Government Grant adds a new facet to their club. Information Technology and video will assist them in teaching skills. I love the innovation of these guys, well done.

Beachmere Community Hall will now get a new kitchen thanks to a State Government Grant. The last kitchen upgrade was in the 1980’s, so it is well overdue. Having a new kitchen will help with hiring the hall out, as it is the main source of income for the committee. I would like to thank the committee for their caring spirit to the local community, some very special people.

“Achieving for you” Rick WILLIAMS MP. Member for Pumicestone. Locals may have seen my political opponents attempt to make allegations against me. These matters have previously been investigated by the Police, and found that I have no case to answer. I’m disappointed that these political attacks have taken attention away from local issues, like improving the Bribie Island Road or restoring health services at the Caboolture Hospital. I will continue to get on with the job I was elected to do, and leave the political smear to others.

One of my government’s signature policies that sets out to do just that is Advancing Queensland, a $420 million investment in maximising this state’s future potential. To the end of June, we have committed more than $205 million of this investment to 1,650 innovators across Queensland. Their projects have supported 4,821 jobs. We are on our way to being the ‘Start Up State’ We have established 13 incubators in regional areas. There are new frontiers for new industries under our biofuels strategy, we have cemented an agreement with the US Navy. NEW FRONTIERS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY.

I can tell you our message to the energy industry is clear – our Government-owned power assets will remain in public hands, distributing $770 million back to consumers and we will continue to push towards our 50% renewable energy target by 2030. According to the Australian Energy Market Operator, we will be the only State that will not expect a shortfall in electricity generation. HONOURING COMMITMENTS. I am proud of my Government’s record on honouring its election commitments. Of the 553 we made before the last election, 484 – or 87% - have been delivered, with another 50 underway and 19 superseded. A GOVERNMENT OF DELIVERY.

COMMUNITY EVENTS WHATS WRONG WITH THE AGE PENSION?

A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN It was really heartening to see so many people on Bribie taking action to preserve our local environment. At last month’s Longman Environment Reference Group (LERG), locals came together to discuss the impact of pollution and contamination, recreation and development on the Island’s marine life, koalas and vegetation. With residents on Bribie telling me that electricity prices are hurting them, it’s great to be having a positive discussion about new, sustainable and cost-effective ways of conserving our environment. From my conversations, the feedback I’ve received is that people on the Island want to transition towards forms of energy which are cleaner and less expensive (and so do I!) I look forward to continuing these conversations at the next LERG.

Labor listens to longman community on climate change Member for Longman Susan Lamb has brought together some of the electorate’s most passionate environmental groups and one of Labor’s top Climate Change experts. Longman’s first environment reference group meeting was held at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre yesterday morning, where environmentalists spoke with the Shadow Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Pat Conroy. Ms Lamb said the meeting was set up to give Longman a chance to help shape Labor’s future Climate and Energy policy. “We already know Longman is home to some seriously passionate community groups, and those focusing on the environment are some of the most wellinformed and driven,” she said. “We want to ensure that the voices of these groups are heard, and provide them with an opportunity to steer Labor’s policy.” Ms Lamb and Mr Conroy spent the afternoon hearing Longman’s ideas on how Australia can reduce emissions and lessen the country’s impact on Climate Change. Mr Conroy said community consultation was vital when building a policy platform. “Hearing what active environmentalists and volunteers think is an important part of shaping this debate, and ensuring the grass roots movements support our stance

“As a comparison, the last Labor Government granted 191 MRI licences in November 2012, including 30 full licences in regional Australia and 161 partial licences in cities in order to help patients access the scans they need.”

“I’ve been championing this cause since 2015 after local medical professionals told me how badly the community needs it, and now is the perfect time to let the Government know,” she said. “We are sick of being sick, because of this government.” Ms Lamb held a round table discussion in her King Street office with radiographers, in addition to on-going talks with doctors. MRI scans are used to investigate or diagnose conditions that affect soft tissue, such as tumours and brain disorders, and services only attract a rebate if they are performed on a Medicare-eligible MRI machine. Ms Lamb said that Labor had initiated the inquiry to look at the introduction and coverage of MRI Medicare licences under this Government. “Your postcode or where you chose

NO STOPPING FOR THIS BUS! Prompted by their personal love of good tasting coffee and already drive through customers, Bribie Island locals, Karyn & Greg Wood had little hesitation in purchasing the easily identifiable and affectionately known, The Coffee Bus located at 936 Bribie Island Road, Ningi. The previous owners had seen a market for coffee and purchased an old Leyland stock bus and converted it into its present form. The working hours, half days, MondaySaturday suited Karyn and Greg’s active and varied lifestyle and they had already recognised that the coffee was an established brand with a loyal and regular predominantly drive-through clientele. The eight lovely ladies in this photo have all received their Heartbeats T shirts for completing over 100, 200,300 and over 400 classes! In fact when I added up the classes that these ladies have participated in the number was 2368, but they have all done more since then! And there are lots more class members who have reached these bench marks but missed being in the photo, I just managed to get these ones to sit still long enough to “capture them”. I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it - I LOVE every one of the Heartbeats classes that I have taken for over 6 years now. Why? Because they are fun, social and most of all, because I see improvements in the fitness of the participants in every single class. Sometimes the changes are subtle and other times they are huge. I see them as I take the class

and I smile like a Cheshire cat knowing that these participants are doing something that was not possible just a few short weeks ago. PROGRESS! That’s what fitness is all about. It doesn’t matter if your fitness is at a level where walking to the letterbox is a challenge or if you have just finished running a marathon, if you want to improve your health and happiness at any age, you have to progress. I was at a presentation a while back where a Geriatrician from the University of Queensland spoke and said “If your doctor tells you that your “bad” knee is due to age, ask them why your other knee, which is the same age, doesn’t hurt – If they can’t tell you, get another doctor.” Age is used as an excuse for a lot of things, not hearing your wife for instance. Well age is what my hubby tells me is the problem after his hearing test had his recorded as

Senior Gentle Leg Exercises Before You Start

Use a stable hard backed chair to sit in or to use for balance, or stand next to your kitchen bench so you can use that for balance. Wear flat bottomed shoes (not thongs!) so when you stand up you will be balanced. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these stretching exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Let’s get started! The exercises shown are to help strengthen you legs and will need you to concentrate on your balance. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, one leg may be stronger than the other so move slowly. Using your leg muscles will help with your balance and mobility, but they do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one leg exercise a day will give you improvement in your movement over time. So have your hard backed chair or kitchen bench handy for support, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

BACKWARD LUNGE

Stand with your toes in a straight line and your feet shoulder width apart Step slowly back with one leg Slowly bend you back knee, only lower yourself down to a place you are comfortable with. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LOWER YOUR KNEE DOWN TO THE GROUND. SLOWLY unbend your knee and stand up – Do Not Come Up Quickly Repeat bending the same knee and lowering yourself slowly - only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 5. Repeat on other leg. Rest

HIP RAISE/STRETCH

Use you hard backed chair or kitchen bench for support if needed Stand with your toes in a straight line and your feet shoulder width apart. Slightly bend one knee and this leg is your support leg – the one you will be standing on. Keep your other leg as straight as you comfortably can and raise your leg backwards from your hip. Hold for the count of One – Two, slowly lower back down and repeat on this leg as many time as you comfortably can up to 5 times. Repeat with other leg. Rest

SQUAT AND PUSH

Stand with your toes in a straight line and your feet should width apart. Slowly squat down like you are about to sit on a chair (you can have a chair behind you if you concerned about your legs supporting you) At the same time raise your arms out to the front with your hands flat Slowly stand back up and return your arms to your sides. Repeat the squat and gentle push slowly, only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

TOE TAPS

Stand behind a step in your home or you can even use a cushion as you will not be standing on the step/cushion. If you want to have more stability you can have a hard back chair next to you or stand next to the kitchen bench. Support yourself with one leg keeping that knee slightly bent. Gently tap the step or cushion with your other toe, do not step on it, and return the foot to the ground. Repeat this with that foot as many times as you feel comfortable with up to 15 times. Rest

“normal” – he reckons this means “normal for a 57 year old male” or “only hears what he wants to hear”. But age is not a reason for not improving your fitness. The internet overflows with videos of men and women in their 80’s and 90’s lifting impressive amounts of weight in gyms or running in races. The majority of these people have not always been “into exercise”. Many of them didn’t have time to even consider exercise as a hobby until well they retired. But what they have done is slowly progressed and that’s what we do in the Heartbeats classes. Participants starting the classes might sit through the majority of the class and then l one day find they can do the whole class standing. Someone may find an exercise with the resistance band a little difficult at first and then within a very short time discover they can change the position of the bands without issue at all. I see them sit taller, stand easier, move their feet quicker or with more coordination. Even though they may not realise these changes or improvements themselves in the class, the most important thing is that these participants are actively keeping social, active, balanced, mobile and independent. All of which are incredibly important for anyone at any age.

you…. Three afternoons each week, a group of exercise devotees assemble at the Activity Hall for an hour of fun and fitness. Usually numbering between twelve and twenty, we follow the lead of Cathy, our guide and guru. She is an expert in her field, and always stresses that we should not overdo it. The exercises are aimed at our fitness levels, and are constantly punctuated by smart comments and mirthful intrusions. Dignity and decorum are not obligatory. I spent most of last year in hospital or home nursing and could only get about with a walking frame. After two months with Cathy, and the encouragement of the group, I have even discarded my walking stick. The targeted exercises, and the discipline of “sticking to it”, are the reasons for this progress. I totally recommend the classes to all, and wonder why so few males participate. Don’t be shy gentlemen. From Thimphu we journeyed north to Punakha. As we wind our way through the pines and wandering rivers we feel blessed to be on such an awe inspiring journey. As we glance across the valley with the sun slowly setting –we glimpse the temple of the Divine Madman. There is much mythology surrounding Chimmi Lhakhang - the fertility temple. They even

have a book filled with photos of those who visited for a blessing to become pregnant and as a result have sent pictures of their success. One of our travelling party received the blessing so I will keep you posted on the outcome. The Punakha Dzong also known as Pungtang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang, is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Bhutan. Here we try our hand a rafting through the ‘female ‘ river which is considered to be the gentler of the two converging rivers – the other being the male river – of course. A visit to the ‘Fort’ in Punakha should not be missed. For this tour I chose a farm stay to enhance my fellow travellers experience. Here in Phobjikha Valley which can only be described as heaven transcending, one night is without a doubt and experience like no other- just be prepared for a day without a shower. Living with a local allowed us to get a true feeling in the day to day life of a Bhutanese farmer. The endangered black neck crane said to be heavenly emissaries or avatars of long lost ancestors comes here to nest. In a scooped out mountain top one can see the nests perched as if defying anyone to invade their territory. Paro is the resting

place for those attempting to climb to the famous TIGERS NEST or Taktshang Goemba. Precariously perched in the side of a cliff, it is a challenge to complete the 14 kilometre hike to the monastery. It is however one of the most rewarding journeys we have ever made – with one exception – that of Base Camp at Mt Everest. I could tell you so much more about the incredible journey but the best way to experience Bhutan is with me on one of my tours with AMBER BHUTAN. At a forum held recently at the VMR on Bribie, the guest speaker was Tim Mander, shadow minister for Police and Correctional Services, took questions regarding his portfolio and during question time a woman from Banksia Beach brought up the drone situation in her area. On one occasion, she had a drone flying just metres above her in her own back yard and could not see the operator of the machine in sight. Mr. Mander was caught a bit unawares about the topic, but too his credit he said he will investigate the problem and laws pertaining to drones and get back to the LNP candidate for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson. The main concern for residents, especially those one’s on canals, is that these devices can be used for sinister reasons; i.e. burglaries of properties, motor vehicles and vessels moored to pontoons. These

There are not to many facilities in our region like The House Of Happiness at Woorim, it is indeed a unique and happy place where children with special needs can come from all over South East Queensland and enjoy Bribie Island and all it has to offer. Mark and Vera Segedin (onsite managers) have an incredible knack to make you feel very welcome, safe and looked after. The facility was established in 1971 for special needs children, it was maintained by Tram and Bus Special Children’s Association and proudly sponsored by Brisbane Transport Bus Driver’s. The facility has recently expanded to now accommodate Special needs adults, Community groups, craft groups, people with Spina Bifida, yoga groups and much more. The House of Happiness can accommodate all age groups now with any disability to allow them to come to a place and enjoy to safe environment of a small beach town. Most of their guests have never seen the beach and this facility is only a 3-minute walk from Woorim Beach. They even have specialised beach chairs if needed. Mark & Vera been onsite caretakers for just over 5 and a half years, transforming this incredible facility into a little magical wonderland......... Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October and is believed to have originated from the Celtic tradition the Samhain festival- where costumes were worn and fires were lit to ward away evil spirts. Although in the 21st century, Halloween has a different meaning, inspiration is still drawn from its origins- with traditions such as dressing up still popular, even if it is for a different purpose. Halloween is seen by the world as a day to dress up and gorge on lolliespossibly even pull the odd prank. It is a holiday that is known for being fun and a little scary- however this is vastly different to the holiday that is celebrated largely all over Mexico. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on the 2nd of November and is a celebration for the dead. In Mexico the 2nd of November is a day where people who have passed are remembered through parades, elaborate feasts and flowers. Family’s honour loved ones by creating an altar, in which flowers, food and a photo are placed at, as a sign of respect and love. Costumes are worn to help connect the living with the deceased. Many people mix up Halloween with the Day of the

REIQ’s most capped Auctioneer of the Year, Justin Nickerson, has been crowned the best in Australia and New Zealand for a record-equalling back-to-back win of the REIA Australasian Auctioneer of the Year championship in Adelaide today (September 7, 2017). Mr Nickerson, who has won the REIQ title a record-smashing four times (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018), is the first Australian and only the third auctioneer in history to win back-to-back Australasian titles, after New Zealand’s Mark Sumich (2007, 2008) and Daniel Coulson (2012, 2013). “This is unbelievable, it’s just incredible,” a dazed Mr Nickerson said immediately following the announcement. “This competition is the pinnacle of our profession and it brings together the elite auctioneers, the best of the best, from all over Australia and New Zealand. “To think I’ve won this is incredible, but to win back-to-back – well, that hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he said. “I’ve got a great team around me and this wouldn’t have happened without their support and

tireless work so I want to thank them for their commitment to this goal.” The only other Queenslander to have won the title is Jason Andrew, who now lives in New South Wales. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella congratulated Mr Nickerson on his historic win. “Justin has worked so hard for this win and it’s a testament to his attention to detail, to his determination and to his amazing skill,” she said. “He really started planning for this day the very next day after last year’s Australasian win. The Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ Auctioneering Championships is an annual event conducted jointly by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) and the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) representing the most skilled auctioneers that Australia and New Zealand have to offer. Claiming their own space. And yet, I must wait for this, for it is yet early morning and so I turn my gaze from my expansive dream, to the fisher-bird, searching in the shallow pools. I can’t even say its name, but it fends for itself, unafraid, and after it has fed, it soars. There is now a figure passing me. Is she not Athena? Striding the ocean floor, she is not calling to me, not sirenesque, but I see her and I understand that I have more to do. It was only a small town, out in the Central West, surrounded by wheat fields, sorghum paddocks and some scrubby bush in which lived more goats than you could possibly believe. It was a town that had seen better days during the 1950’s – 1960’s – 1970’s ; but then a lot of towns out this way had gone the same way. The houses and shops were made from stone, old tough stone that weathered over the years, no new houses had been built for a while, but the ones that were there were made to last, and they have. About 1200 people live in the town, they all work in the local area, growing food or grain or fibres, or else they were making things to help with the growing, or fixing things that helped with the growing. The place was dedicated to creating wealth from the land and they were good at it. They had a railway service, a rattling old diesel motor carriage for folks who wanted to get to the coast and a train of long, clanking wagons for carrying the grain and foodstuffs to the market place. The main street was wide enough to

turn a team of bullocks, as it used to ; and all along the main street were shops selling bush clothes, a butcher, a small super market, a service station run by Indians who did a hell of good job, and one of them, Guptil, was a brilliant leg spinner in the Town First XI cricket team. Old timers reckon he is better than Bob Plump, who was a leg spinner all through the 50’s and 60’s. The rest of the main street had a couple of empty buildings, a bakery that turned out to be a dud once a mouse was found in a pie, although some of the older folk said you should never look at a pie when you eat it – then no one would have ever known about the mouse and the bakery would still be open !! Anyway, right at the end of the Main Street, on the corner with the road to Flat Barrow Creek, was the only pub in town. This was the only corner where the kids doing mainies and blockies on Saturday nights could turn around, so there was always something to see from the front bar, especially when the city cops, the Highway Patrol, were in town. On the other side of the corner, opposite the pub was a billabong, bit muddy, full of water lilies and frogs, red bellied black snakes and strange, weird smelling bubbles in the middle. But ; back to the pub. It was called, officially, The Billabong Hotel, but everyone called it the Pub Like the rest of the place it was an old pub, good front bar, clear and clean beer pipes, adequate kitchen, the men’s toilets were a bit shonky but the women’s toilets were OK because the local CWA used the Pub for meetings and no one , just no one, would ever mess with the CWA. And, mate, if the

toilets were not right, these women would come for you and you did not want that !! Not in that way anyhow. Upstairs were eight rooms with small en-suites and old box type air conditioners which worked in summer but not in winter when it was cold enough to freeze the water in the en-suite toilets. Wendy Lampard’s ghost was supposed to be in Room Two, but no one ever saw her except for Horace Wanderstick, who was always half full of rum anyway. He would chase her around the room, but we won’t get into that here !! Once a month, on a Friday night, the local State Member of Parliament, Dick Snapshot, would stay over in the pub, hang around in the front bar, talk about stuff happening up North, because everyone wanted to know what was going on up North : none of it made any real sense to anyone, but no one gave a stuff because Dick was buying the beers [ well, Dick’s expense account was buying the beers, which really meant that the mob themselves were buying the beers ? ] – bit complicated that, but you know what I mean. On this particular Friday night Dick was there, standing by the window overlooking the billabong, and babbling on about stuff up North. For the first time, ever, there were a few blokes who turned up wearing bright orange T-Shirts. Most of these blokes were pear shaped, had bleary, watery eyes and said in loud voices ; “ That Dick Snapshot was all bullshit. There was nuthin going on up North, he was just making it all up. “ “ Yair “ said an old bloke at the other end of the bar as he rolled a blue capstan smoke. Dick Snapshot puffed up like a toad, no one had done this him before, not here, not in the Pub. He pulled out a handful

of blue pamphlets from a bag held by his minder, Mary belle Steadford, held the pamphlets above his head and shouted ; “ Well, come on then, read this, this is what I have done, there is no bullshit here ! “ and he threw the blue pamphlets around the pub. They fluttered about, blown around by the fans but most finished up on the floor, along with the cigarette butts and other stuff. Dick quickly ordered a round for the bar and hoped that was that. But it wasn’t. The old bugger with a rolled blue capstan smoke, which was as thin as a reed, looked carefully at the blue paper and said ; “ This bloody thing is dated 1989, Dick you lying old bugger, the orange blokes are right.” This year it was 2009, the blue pamphlets were 20 years old, Dick had never had to chuck anything around in the Pub and Mary belle just kept carrying them around ; never any trouble before, not while Dick was buying and talking. Most blokes kept one foot on the bar rail, pushed their hats back on their heads, rolled their eyes and sucked on Dick’s beer [ well…their beers actually ]. The orange blokes started to get a bit pushy but big, lumpy Wally Woldheim gave them a ‘ don’t cause trouble ‘ stare and they all mumbled off into the corner where they also sucked on Dick’s beer. “ Sorry, Dick, I should have changed ‘em “, shrugged Mary belle but Dick smiled, kept talking to everyone and whispered out of the side of his mouth to Mary belle once he got the chance, “ Give the rest out next Friday at Flat Barrow Creek.”

The owner of the Pub, Henry Puggle, quickly realized that no one gave a stuff about Dick’s bits of blue paper or what was going on up North so he shouted a round of beer for the bar, just to be social mind you, then Dick shouted another round ; the place was pretty noisy by now, and then the mob looked for the orange blokes to buy a round but they had already left in an old Kingswood with a “ Tully Tigers Rugby League “ sticker on the back window. “ The orange blokes have done a runner.” shouted old Bob Plump the exleg spin bowler ! “ Yair. “ nodded the old bloke with the blue capstan smoke. It all began to wind down after that. Horace went up to Room Two to find Wendy, Dick grabbed the bag and Mary belle and headed for the Red Back Motel and the mob wandered off.

As she was wiping the bar clean, Olive, the very thin bar girl, saw a leathery face with bright pink eyes looking at her through the window by the billabong. “ Did you see a big bloke with a green shirt and blue boots in here tonight ? “ rustled a voice. “ Nup. “ said Olive, looking down and still wiping the bar. She looked up with surprise when she thought she heard a soft splash in the billabong.

The campaign to bring a Community Bank to Beachmere was launched with much fun and frivolity on Saturday at Beachmere Village Shopping Ctr. The Bendigo Bank Agency, in the Beachmere Newsagent, has now opened and the launch coincided to attract support for the Agency as well as to raise pledges for the Community Bank. State Member, Rick Williams, as well as Local Councillor Div 2, Peter Flannery, were on hand during the morning to congratulate the Steering Committee and meet the locals. Momentum for the Beachmere Community Bank has been building quickly since the pledge campaign started just a few weeks ago. Steering Committee Chair, Dale Martin, said the committee was delighted with the early response to the pledge campaign. “While our focus is reaching our target as

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said the Palaszczuk Government’s Transition 2 Success (T2S) program was making a difference in Queensland by helping young people get back onto the right path in life. “This program is helping to reduce crime and helping young people live more productive lives,” Mr William said. “And there is proof this program is actually working in Queensland. “Figures show that more than 80 per cent of young people in the youth justice system reoffend after 12 months. For T2S graduates, that figure is greatly improved with more than two-thirds not reoffending within 12 months.

beaches, depending upon the tide at specific times of the day will differ in size significantly. The congestion referred to here could lead to unwanted aggression by the fact of too many dogs in a restricted area, and many dog owners would then simply avoid this and the whole purpose of allowing dogs to have the freedom of running along the beach and having a quick swim, would be lost.

This proposal was quite distinct in that it only proposed that the beaches be off leash, dog friendly between specific hours, and the hours proposed were from 5.00pm through to 8.00am each day. These hours would cater for dog owners who worked, and can only exercise their dog after work in the evening, or those who can only do so early morning.

We have been informed that the Sunshine Coast Council have many kilometres of dog friendly beaches for their residents, many of which are time zoned, i.e. available as such between specific hours. This is a practicable and sensible way of addressing this issue, and ensures that the beaches are available for families etc., for the traditional beach use without dogs, for the remainder of the day, i.e. from 8.00am through to 5.00pm.

Late last Summer/early Autumn a proposal was put forward for the creation of dog friendly beaches along the Western side of Bribie Island.

Also, by allowing this access to all beaches along the Western side of the Island, would cater for a wide range of residents from White Patch through to the Southern end of the Island – i.e. South Esplanade, Bongaree. By limiting the access to one or two beaches will simply cater for just a small number of dog owners who have the ability/resources to visit these areas.

We have already received many signatures petitioning this proposal which was presented to Council through Councillor Brooke Savige. We received acknowledgment but no offer of consultation with the Community was offered. The whole issue has been deferred to a State Govt. Dept.!!!

The point that is not being addressed in subsequent conversations with Council, is that many people, i.e. elderly, do not have the resources to take their dog to beaches outside of the areas where they can easily walk to. By nominating just one or two beach areas, these residents are effectively being excluded.

We have since raised this matter with the State Government Member, Rick Williams, who has recommended that we commence the Petition once again and once we receive sufficient signatures to this Petition, he will present this to Parliament on our behalf, which can then be referred back to Council for action.

Another important aspect of this proposal is that by allowing access to all of these beaches, many of which are quite small and broken up by rocks, mangroves, etc., would avoid the congestion of too many dogs in a relatively small area. These areas are also effected by tides, and some

Cranky Lizard is not a climate scientist, whatever that means !! Cranky is not a sociologist or an anthropologist nor an historian. Cranky Lizard is definitely not a witch or a warlock, depending on your take of things ; Cranky Lizard is merely an observer of the human form. In terms of human occupation of the Earth, in a very general sense, a few hundred years is not much in terms of relative time. A few hundred years ago, sensible people, living in small villages and towns in Europe and Great Britain used to strap women to poles and drown them in the village pond ; because they were witches ! Other times they would rope them onto poles and burn them alive ; because they were witches ! And, by doing so, the villages believed that they would make their villages safer ; witches were threats to public life and by removing them from public life everyone would be safer, which is a sensible and desirable public goal. So, flick go the witches. The only evidence needed to condemn someone as a witch was the testimony of a few other people who knew about witches…there was never any recorded instance of witches doing any actual harm to anyone. But as the shouting and finger pointing increased, so did the hysteria, common sense fled the scene and mob rule prevailed. So witches were burnt or drowned. At some obscure point in time, common sense returned to the villages and towns ; witches disappeared and the burning and drowning of women stopped. But, other dreadful things appeared, disease, famine, vampires – the Horsemen of the Apocalypse rode roughshod across the land. Villages and towns prayed, en masse, Christian crosses were carried in front of individuals to protect them from the nightmares, in particular the “ End of

But, as the eternal rhythms of the Earth sway gently over time, the old, unimaginable fear has returned and lurks, just outside of the peripheral vision of most of us, but not all of us !!. An horrific, gore covered nemesis, has emerged from the stinking miasma of corporate greed ; climate change !! This, of course, is our ancient enemy – the end of the earth !! It was first called out as global warming, but that did not play with the mob because most of us knew it was rubbish. But climate change…well, that is the same old beast, dressed in a shiny corporate suit. This beast has infected our universities, our political parties, some state institutions, the bearded wild eyed mobs, and parts of our media. And, this time it has, as an incubus, a substance from the Devil…coal !!! Coal, the ancient remains of trees, vegetables, grass and animals ,the very stuff from which we are made, the fuel which provides the energy for the

machines which have transformed our Earth and given warmth and light to our communities is now the vehicle which will drive us to our doom. Coal, burnt to make energy, will bring about the end of the Earth !! Elements of the human race, normally sensible people, as indeed were the witch burners, have been galvanized into action. Governments have flogged protective legislature through various chambers, Australian sovereign states have handed their bums, in brown paper bags, to the modern saviours of our planet, those humans who have invented Clean Energy Targets. Flushed out by the largesse of the Clean Energy Targets financial programmes, and excited by the “ greatest moral challenge of our time “, herds of aggressive panhandlers, gimlet eyed zealots and earnest professors in sandals and hemp shirts have nearly succeeded in closing down the coal industry. Cranky Lizard points out that only Australia, in the global community, has been able to see this impending tragedy to the human race ; as we close down our coal industry most other nations are building new coal powered energy plants , some 600 plus new coal fired power stations are being built as you read this. For Australia, of course, this means thousands of fellow Australians, who have done nothing wrong, will become unemployed, whole regional and rural communities will be forced into a long, sad, shallow dive towards irrelevance, and, as we have seen already, our cities, our industries, our lifestyle will change into drab, dreary twilight zones,

dependant for light and energy on crazily spinning wind machines, whole banks of mirrors and solar panels, bizarre paddle machines in our tidal waters and diesel powered generators. Cranky Lizard urges you all to contemplate the mad irony of this… we burn diesel fired generators to make power instead of coal !! Australia, of course is rich in coal, we have more than most countries in the world and, we shall sell it to them, but we won’t use it ourselves, No Sir, not us, we are too smart for that !! Cranky Lizard accepts that a new source of energy is needed to power our global communities, oil, diesel, petrol will not last forever, rocket fuel will not give us the force we need to travel to new galaxies and we cannot sustain over 100,000 jet fuel burning aircraft in our skies forever, we simply cannot. These new sources exist – nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, magnetic levitation and other sources of energy remain understood but not tamed. H2O, water, contains the elements of ferocious, unlimited energy, but we are not there yet !! Cranky Lizard suggests that we let common-sense back into the equation, and direct our thoughts and energy into developing these new energy sources and that, as a community we demand that our political leaders reject the rubbish of clean energy targets and focus our National wealth, both intellectual and financial, on exploring and taming new energy sources for us, homo sapiens ! And, Cranky Lizard discreetly and diplomatically recommends that you contact your local Federal MP if you are concerned about living in the dark. There must be light at the end of the tunnel ; Cranky Lizard just can’t seem to find it !!!

We all have that one friend, you know the one. The well-meaning one who has your best interests at heart but can also be brutal in their honesty because ‘you need to hear it’, and they go on a relentless spiel on what you should be doing with your

life, but don’t forget, ‘it’s just my opinion’. This happened to me last week with a late-night phone call. One in which it was suggested that I can’t curl up in a ball, that I should seek counselling because it is too easy to leave a relationship without trying. That I should stop dealing with a few things that are causing stress, and start doing things for me. This phone call turned into a heated debate and I felt as if I was being judged by someone who doesn’t really know my story. I don’t have a lot of close friends, and to be honest, I probably have one less now, but I have lots of good friends and acquaintances, but ones that I confide in are few and far between. This is my choice and mine alone. I have trust issues and I’m willing to admit that. I have many scars. Scars that you cannot see. Scars that cause pain every now and then. These scars are the ones imbedded deep in my heart and

soul. These are called memories. Painful ones at that. Ones that will never leave me, but eventually I will file them away and ‘get over it’ and the pain will not be as great, but instead, they will become a gentle reminder of what I have lived. It has been just over a year since I packed my bags and left my home. It has been far from easy. My well-meaning friends suggest that it is time I take the next step and file for divorce and move on to the next adventure. The thing they don’t seem to understand is, I am on my next adventure. I am learning about me. I am doing things for me. If I want to stay home in my pj’s and curl up in a ball watching soppy movies and cry, I can. If I want to get in the car and drive, I do. If I’m feeling a bit low, I go somewhere that’s peaceful, bushwalking or simply sit on a beach. If I want to sit down and paint, draw, sew, or sing, I can. Although the neighbours

probably don’t appreciate the singing bit, I don’t care. I really don’t because this time it is about me, and me alone. Learning to live alone without a partner. And I like it. I’m not ready to join the ‘dating scene’ and love someone else. I am learning to love myself. I will know when I am ready to move on. But for now, this is my time to grieve a failed relationship and I’m doing it the best way I can.

Bribie Island Oyster Gardening - Creature Feature Upside Down Jellyfish “The jelly fish in the photos (below), lives in the waters in our canal. It has been around on and off for about 12 months that we know of. For the past almost 3 weeks it has been lying, tentacles up, just by our walkway, and doesn't seem to have moved at all. Heaven only knows what it gets up to in the wee small hours of the morning. We have checked its live/dead status, and it is definitely alive. If you get a chance, could you please identify it for us, and perhaps fill us in on its behaviour. We would be very grateful.” Yours sincerely, Anne and Phil Hargreaves.

Upside Down Jellyfish

Figure 1 (above). This jellyfish is called the “Upside Down Jellyfish” (Cassiopea maremetens). They are characterised by their distinctive markings and unusual sedentary, bottom dwelling behavior. Their lifestyle typically involves the jellyfish lying in sheltered, shallow water with oral arms facing upwards. This posture is thought to provide sunlight to algal endosymbionts (zooxanthellae) within the tissues,although the jellyfish are also plankton feeders. They can cause quite painful stings and are being investigated for their potential to accumulate heavy metals (for bioremediation). There are around 5 species of Cassiopea reported from Australia, mostly from tropical waters.

Highcrown Seahorse

This is an interesting find. Any ideas what this little fellow is called ? Sincerely, Bob Brandis. Figure 2 (left). Thatlittle fellow is most probably a juvenile Highcrown Seahorse (Hippocampus procerus). There are around 340 species of seahorses and pipefishes in Australia. All Hippocampus species and many other seahorses are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (http://www.iucnredlist.org/) due to multiple threats. Oyster gardens and oyster reefs are potential habitat for these species, suggesting that restoration of oyster reefs will help halt biodiversity loss in our coastal estuaries.

Figure 3. These attractive, clam-like oysters that have recruited to some of the oyster gardens in Pacific Harbour are foliate oysters (Dendostrea folium). They grow to around 10 cm in shell width and occur throughout the Indo-West Pacific from East Africa, north to Japan and as far south as SE Queensland.

Figure 4. These pretty crabs are called stone crabs or slow moving shore crabs (Myomenippe fornasinii). Often mistaken for juvenile mud crabs (Scylla serrata), they are more colourful and relatively slow moving. They grow to around 10 cm across and are oyster predators, reducing average survival in your gardens. Remove them when you find them! Thanks to Peter Davie from QM for help with the ID.

Feminism What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word “feminism”? Do you think of radicalized feminists? Do you think of equality and fair rights? Female empowerment? The definition of a feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes”. Feminists are advocates for equality. EQUALITY. So why does the meaning of the word become kind of taboo? People think being a feminist is bad, that it’s embarrassing to call yourself one. This is because of the media. It mainly focuses on the negative and has changed people’s views of it. Come on people! It’s 2017. Women don’t need you to pay our bills for us or to fix the leaky tap in the bathroom. We can do all of that on our own. A woman literally ran for president in America and most of the US voted for her. We fight in the military, we run multi-national and complete in the Olympics. We can do all this and yet, women still do not have the same rights or equalities as men. Without women’s advocacy women wouldn’t be allowed to vote, or be allowed into pubs, get

You are allowed to apply for that job because of feminism, you’re allowed to press charges for rape and sexual assault because of feminism. Playing a sport? FEMINISM. Applying to college? You get the idea.

Men need feminism too! Women aren’t the only ones oppressed by traditional gender roles and feminists fight to destroy them for the benefit of women AND men. Which to Choose: iPhone X, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus On September 12th, this year, Apple Inc. released three new iPhones: the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. This addition to the world of technology has sparked many a curiosity inside phone buyers and enthusiasts alike. Many people are wondering, why the different releases? What is the difference? Which one should you buy? While all of these inquiries are significant, I strive to satisfy the latter of the few. Which one should you buy? The new iPhone X is a phone that Apple Inc. are trying to market as a phone from the future that has arrived a little early, this may be true. It is the first iPhone to have an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen. The screen covers the whole front of the phone. Apple Inc. has eliminated the concept of a ‘home button’, and replaced it with swiping up technology. Aside from this advance, the iPhone X has acted as the introduction of ground-breaking technology, this being face identification. Now, one only needs to glance at their phone - in any lighting - and it shall activate. This iPhone also hold an upgraded camera. This improved feature now has two cameras lined vertically on the left side (while looking at camera) of the phone. Also, this model introduces a never-beforeseen lighting choices function in the camera. This allows the user to modify the lighting used when taking photos or videos. This phone isn’t for those inexperienced in technology. If you have deep pockets and are looking for a fancy gizmo to show off, the new iPhone X is for you. The new iPhone 8 has a majorly improved camera (compared to that of the previous

iPhone, the iPhone 7). Along with the futuristic ability to charge wirelessly, this model being the first ever able to do so. This is an iPhone that has fulfilled requests and expectations, a generic update. If one is searching for an up-to-date model, yet nothing too crazy, the iPhone 8 is perfect for you. The iPhone 8 Plus will, most likely, often be regarded as the same, only larger, as the iPhone 8, though this is most definitely incorrect. This model has a majority of the new features displayed in the iPhone X, yet is hundreds of dollars cheaper. It has the new cameras lighting and set up. Plus the wireless charging feature. This model has the longest battery life of the three models released. It holds the same familiar home button feature and touch identification, for those who like this classic system. iPhone 7 cases will still fit on this model. This model is for those who like the bigger models. For those who enjoy the modern features with the classic touch. Both of these new iPhones have the same A11 bionic processor. While the iPhone X does have an improved camera. In Australia, The iPhone X costs $999 (for the 64GB model) or $1,149 (for 256GB) - it comes in black or silver. The iPhone 8 costs $699 (for the 64GB model) or $849 (for 256GB) - it comes in black, silver or gold. The iPhone 8 Plus costs $799 (for the 64GB model) or $949 (for 256GB) - it comes in black, silver or gold.

Noted Wordsmith to visit Bribie Island One of the more popular and well known of the University of Queensland’s Emeritus Professors, Roland (Roly) Sussex AM, is to be the guest speaker at The Probus Club of Bribie Island’s November meeting. Professor Sussex (pictured) regularly amuses and entertains his followers with frequent appearances on ABC Radio and with his weekly column published in the Courier Mail’s Q-Weekend. Roly concentrates on explaining usage of some of the more obscure words, word pronunciations and spelling, as well as modern variations in meaning of long-established words and phrases, all delivered in an amusing and entertaining manner. The Probus Club of Bribie Island provides an opportunity for new arrivals in the immediate area to meet retired or semi-retired professional and business men and women in an environment promoting friendship fellowship and

fun. Two of the highlights of the club’s existence are monthly outings to places of interest within Queensland and presentations by interesting guest speakers during each meeting. On the 14th of September, we had a National ‘R U OK?’ Day. Now before I dig a little deeper into the statistics of this - I want you to stop and think? when was the last time someone asked you ‘Hey, how are you?’ and you’ve answered back with ‘Good thanks, you?’ without giving much thought to your answer and it merely being a cluster of empty words. ‘R U OK?’ Day has provided a helpline for thousands if not millions of people all around the world. With an average of 2,320 people committing suicide every year the ‘R U OK’ not for profit campaign has made a significant impact on decreasing the suicide rates of today’s society. What I want to focus on not the campaign itself but the lead up to mental illness and how something so small can amount to an uncontrollable, overpowering mental state which can lead to irrational thinking and potentially suicide. Feelings which contribute to the overpower mental state are exacerbated when not treated correctly. Feeling alone, struggling, don’t fit in to society, anxious, stressed, hopeless, excessive sadness and moodiness are

just some of the many feelings which can lead to extreme measures. You may be focussed on a path in life and determined to get there until one day ‘life’ will throw you what I like to call a ‘Curve Ball’ and you will crumble down and feel beaten. I want people to understand that there is a light at every tunnel. whether it be tomorrow or 6 months’ time... things will always get better. In this state of mind, it is often very hard to see a positive after so much negative or being thrown so far from the original direction - but this is where your relationships with other people are really tested and your determination, drive and motivation is put to the test. Surrounding yourself with people even if you don’t feel social is a great way to begin to break down the barrier and begin to feel and see hope. Find time to make small adjustments to your original plan to continue to pursue your dream. Be passionate about something you love and immerse yourself in it and indulge. Find a moment of everyday to reflect on your day and find positives. Talk to close friends and family about the way you feel and if that doesn’t help, talk to a stranger. Be comfortable and be truthful. Find time to adjust to what has happened in your life and build from it, make it make you a better version of you. Pull strength from the situation and use it as another thing to motivate you even more. SUSTAINABLE GARDENING. SOILS AIN’T SOILS PART 15. Welcome to our latest gardening articles written by a passionate local Horticulturist for our equally passionate local gardening community living on Bribie island and surrounds. Last month’s articles we touched base on the caution of using overly fine mulches which can compact over time and become water repellent, especially on sandy soils and a brief mention of the soil PH and how the average reading of 6.5 is normal for Bribie Island and how its adequate for growing most lawns, crops and ornamental plants. The 6.5- PH range is considered slightly acidic, but most of the nutrients contained in the soil are available and can be utilised by the plant roots as the PH graph illustrates in your PH kit if you have one. Now the beauty of adding organic matter to your soil and applying worm, fish and kelp brews regularly, is it feeds the microorganisms, bacterial and fungal components in your soil and manages to self-regulate and adjusts the PH range as if by magic. The ongoing overall fertility of the soil thrives as one living organism, so the reliance to need to check your PH meter or kit, becomes less important as your plants, vegetables and lawns will be flourishing as they tap into the living soil beneath and have all their nutritional requirements met. The most important part of the whole equation is having adequate soil moisture available to keep the whole lot in balance. For example, if you were to buy some bagged potting soil or composted manure from the garden centre, you might note that upon inspection that the potting media is slightly moist which is what binds the mix together. Now if we took the same product and left it in a wheel barrow in the sun for a day or so, you will also notice that the pine bark, peat or powdered manure has now dried and separated and now could easily blow away in the breeze. So, no matter how great the product or soil additives are, it all depends on your soil moisture content when you’re considering a soil improvement strategy, such as adding compost to our sandy soils, which are considered structure less, somewhat like our parched bag of potting media left in the sun for a few days, devoid of any moisture. As I mentioned, balance is the key here and problems do arise when adding too much of a good thing, like fresh manure or composts that are still breaking down which contain heat and could have a detrimental effect as they draw nitrogen away from the plant roots as it completes it composting process which could also burn the plants fine root hairs. Such as what happens if you add fresh chicken manure to citrus, it sets them right back, as citrus have lots of fine surface roots and very sensitive to fresh concentrated manures, especially during their establishment. The other interesting thing to note is the PH of wood ash is very alkaline and up there above 8. on the PH range. If you had a bonfire and let the ash sit on the parched soil for a while, you will notice that not many things grow there due to the high alkalinity of the soil around the ash layer and when adding these ashes to your vegetable patch, best to use sparingly and build the soil over time. And again, having adequate soil moisture is paramount as it assists to stabilise the organic matter as it is broken down. Well that’s your microbial lot once again this month. It’s been 12 months since I wrote an article on Metrosideros collina- ‘Little Dugald’ and back then one of our readers from Banksia Beach wrote in and shared his enthusiasm on how well his hedge of ‘Little Dugalds’ were performing for him too. And just last week after driving home and parking my car, my neighbour Di, pounced on me and insisted that I see how well her ‘little dugalds’ were flowering also. Di, planted hers after I wrote the article in September last year. I could not help but be swept up by my neighbour’s enthusiasm, I picked up my step and accompanied her to look at her plants. Well, as the photo supplied attests. One-year old and blooming from head to toe with masses of stunning, vivid, red stamens on show. The bees were literally swarming all over these blooms. I was excited for Di and happy that the plants fitted in well in her new garden and I am especially impressed on how the bees are loving these blooms too. I just had to mention again this Spring how well these plants flourish in our coastal environment and to show that they are proven high performers, as they tolerate salt laden winds, have a nice sheen to the foliage and they have low water requirements, the bees do love them and they look great too. Generally, they grow to 2 metres tall and can be clipped to form a neat hedge. There is a smaller cultivar out now called ‘Little Ewan’ and

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

Especially after the winds that smashed us early in September. What an introduction to spring! With a warmer winter than the norm, before transitioning officially to spring with fine calm sunny days, then an onslaught of sudden gale force winds that bombarded the east coast and without any rainfall. Then, one afternoon we had a brief storm with hail that damaged the soft fleshy leaves of some Agave, Rhoeo and Bromeliads, last month also. Some residents in the surrounding districts were running low on drinking water with some people having to wait patiently for their tanks to be filled from truck deliveries. This reiterates my ongoing sustainable chant about mulching, composting and fortifying the soil accordingly, so the plants can fend for themselves. Its these trying times of environmental extremes, which test our horticultural skills to say the least and if you invested in fruit trees, or planted veggies or turf this spring, you need to have all your bases covered now summer is on the horizon. The right plant, for the right conditions, salt or wind tolerant if needed, with the ability to adjust to the new conditions by fortifying the soil and creating the appropriate micro climate with a frequent watering regime. Young Citrus trees need to have regular irrigation while establishing and the difference between a bumper crop and an average one is making sure your trees stay hydrated. I came across this beautiful Bird of Paradise with a magnificent double flower, dancing around in the ocean breeze, totally adjusted to the unsettled climate, an old faithful plant indeed. this plant grows to half the size of ‘little Duggald’. If you are looking for a hardy plant in a coastal setting that brings in the birds and the bees when in flower, which is generally late winter, spring and summer, then seek out ‘Little Dugald’ as some of our dedicated readers can surely attest to their hardiness indeed!

I was also planting a row of Rapheolepis indica - ‘Snow Maiden’ (Indian Hawthorne) on a property in Banksia Beach on the canals for my client during that day of extreme gale force winds last month and our choice of plant species was excellent, these plants must be able to withstand the strong salty wind gusts we can get here on the coast but who would of thought planting them would be so difficult? The pots were tossed through the air, my hat strangled me as the cord tightened around my neck, the brim of my hat had bent backwards from the sheer force of the wind, my face wind burnt and salt spray smeared on my sunnies, but I loved every minute of it, my version of “extreme gardening”. Recipes of the month we have an American Recipe World 4 Next This one-pot recipe Spanish Chicken and Potatoes is full of flavor and vibrant color and is perfect served with a big piece of crusty white bread or over a steaming hot pile of rice. The recipe is one inspired from a tomato “salsa” my sweet host mother, Fatima, always made for me when I lived in Sevilla, Spain.

One pot Spanish chicken and potatoes 1 and a half teaspoon salt 700.g chicken breast meat 1 large Russet potato, sliced salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon all purpose seasoning (I used poultry seasoning) Half a cup fresh parsley leaves crusty bread or rice for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

Half a cup olive oil

Sauce: Heat the olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions and garlic. Scoop the juices, seeds, and flesh out of the tomatoes into the pan. Add the eggplant pieces and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes or until everything is soupy-like and softened and very good smelling. Place the scooped out tomato halves over the sauce, open side down. Simmer for a

few minutes until the tomatoes have steamed and softened. Break them up in the pan and simmer for another 5-10 minutes to get all the flavors real nice and yummy. Blend: Transfer to a blender or food processor, puree until mixture reaches your desired consistency, and stir in the salt. Taste and adjust to you liking. Chicken and Potatoes: In the same pan, add one more quick drizzle of olive oil and add the chicken and potato slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and seasoning. Saute for a few minutes on each side until they are browned. Finish: Add the sauce back to the pan, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes or until the chicken and potatoes are fully cooked. Top with fresh parsley and serve with crusty white bread or rice.

New sand recycling system to be trialled on Bribie Island A trial aimed at tackling ongoing coastal erosion at Woorim’s popular surf beach is one step closer to reality after Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded a $970,000 tender at its Coordination Committee Meeting on Tuesday, September 12.

The trial, to be conducted over a three to five-year period, will provide an innovative sand recycling system designed to capture a minimum of 35,000m3 of sand each year that would otherwise drift southwards and pump it back along Bribie Island’s eastern beach. Announcing the tender at council’s Coordination Committee Meeting at Strathpine, Acting Mayor Mike Charlton said severe weather events in recent years had significantly impacted Woorim Beach, causing greater rates of erosion than normally expected, and that the trial system would help to restore the beach’s profile and preserve its environmental and recreational values. “The sand recycling system will include the installation of sand shifter equipment and approximately 2km of pipes from

Benalong Street to just north of Fifth Avenue, together with up to six discharge locations where sand can be placed to maintain the beach profile,” Cr Charlton said. “In addition to regular beach nourishment, the trial system will also be able to respond to significant erosion events following severe weather and have the capacity to recycle up to 70,000m3 of sand, if required. “Council will monitor the system’s effectiveness throughout the duration of the trial as an alternative to current beach nourishment practices.

“A similar sand recycling system is currently used in Noosa, and provides valuable protection for coastlines and coastal infrastructure, while still allowing beaches to shift with the tides and respond to natural processes. “As the only patrolled surf beach in our region and the closest to Brisbane, it’s important that council looks at opportunities like this preserve Bribie Island’s shoreline for current and future generations.” Division 1 Councillor Brooke

Savige said the tender follows the commencement of specialist dredging and beach nourishment works last week, which will see 150,000m3 of sand restored along Woorim Beach over a 40-day period in preparation for the recycling trial. “On Friday (September 8), Danish vessel Modi R began its 24/7 operation to deposit sand along Woorim Beach, with the 63m-long ship getting within metres of the shoreline and creating quite a sight for beachgoers,” Cr Savige said. “Modi R will make up to eight trips each day from Spitfire Banks to Woorim Beach, and deposit around 900m3 of sand each trip, or about 7,000m3 per day. “Speaking with council officers, the dredging works have already received positive feedback from locals in terms of what it means for beach users and the local environment. “The dredging works pave the way for the sand recycling trial and forms part of council’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the longterm preservation of Woorim beach for residents, visitors and the local ecosystem.” Construction on the trial system is expected to commence in coming months following the completion of the beach nourishment works, with the system ready to commence operations in 2018/19.

Big Finals Weekend Out Sporting enthusiasts and lovers of entertainment are in for a cracker of a final weekend for the National Winter sports on 29th September and 1st October as the AFL Richmond Tigers front up for their first grand final in 25 years against the formidable and seasoned Adelaide Crows at the MCG (2.30pm – Saturday 30th Sept). The Tigers haven’t played in a Final in 35 years which is not surprising given the size and growth of 18 team national competition. If you are more of a Rugby League supporter, then tune in on Sunday 1st October to watch another cracker of a Rugby League Grand Final as the determined North Queensland Cowboys confront the Melbourne Storm in Sydney of all places. The game starts at 7.30pm on Channel 9.

Beachmere residents have been enjoying the benefits of free Tai Chi in Clayton Park for a few years, but now can enjoy a host of other free fitness activities as well. A few ladies continued the Tai Chi group after the instructor left some time ago and now there are over 20 men and women most Wednesday mornings in Clayton Park from 7am. More recently a local Walking Group has started and they meet on a Monday and Tuesday morning from 8am in Clayton Park. Local lady Judy started up the group calling it the “Buddy Up” program. “We started walking on a Friday with the Slimmers Group and then thought we should do it other days as well. It’s so much easier to get out and walk or exercise when there are other people with you,” Judy said.

“We walk Mondays and Tuesdays from 8am and make sure we use the exercise machines in the park as well. We are having so much fun we even started a Line Dancing group on Thursday mornings at 8am.” So, with Tai Chi, Walking and Line Dancing in Clayton Park, Beachmere is the place to be for free fitness in the Park. Spring In Your Step also kicks off in Clayton Park between August and October on the last Sunday in the month from 9am. This program funded by MBRC encourages residents to use the equipment in the park as well as the Park itself to enhance their fitness programs. Beachmere has also been included in this year’s Older & Bolder program with free activities for the over 50s with this MBRC program running from September to November.

can now use smaller emergency beacons A long popular safety accessory for bushwalkers and outback travellers, personal locator beacons are now hitting the waves on jet ski riders, kayakers and small boat sailors. Rick Williams MP said advances in search and rescue technology meant operators of smaller craft could now use personal locator beacons without compromising their safety. “The Palaszczuk Government has taken a common sense approach to legislation, and will now allow these beacons as acceptable safety equipment on lightweight craft such as personal watercraft, more commonly called jetskis, canoes, kayaks and sailboats under six metres,” Mr Williams said. “Current regulations require Queensland regulated ships to carry an Emergency Position Indicating Rescue Beacon (EPIRB) when operating outside of the declared smooth or partially smooth waters or other waters more than two nautical miles from land. “We have determined it is now possible for personal watercraft (PWC) and other lightweight craft users to wear personal locator beacons.” “However there would be some simple, common-sense conditions managing their proper use. “Industry advocates told us there were problems with carrying an EPIRB on a PWC - such as finding somewhere to store this important piece of safety equipment on a small craft. Mr Williams said the changes would make

Sport, Fishing, Camping it easier to find people lost at sea, and potentially save lives that would otherwise have been lost. “There was concern that a rider who fell off a PWC could quickly become separated from the vessel carrying the EPIRB,” Mr Williams said.. “Clearly this had the potential to seriously compromise any search and rescue operations not only in relation to PWC riders but other lightweight craft users. “The Palaszczuk Government has been sympathetic to these concerns and has consulted closely with groups including the Queensland Recreational Boating Council and the Australian Jet Ski Association. “Maritime Safety Queensland has also approached our search and rescue partners including the Queensland Police Service, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and volunteer marine rescue groups looking for comment on the proposal.” “What they found was emerging technologies in search and rescue communications, meant that the use of a personal locator beacon instead of an EPIRB would not reduce the level of safety or increase their potential rescue time.” Currently the Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016 requirement to carry an EPIRB, does not allow for the substitution of the EPIRB with a personal locator beacon in any situation where an EPIRB is required. The Palaszczuk Government, through Maritime Safety Queensland, will now issue an exemption from the current legislation requirements allowing the wearing of a personal locator beacon by users of PWC and other lightweight craft where, up to now, the standard EPIRB was required.

Vmr New Rescue Boat By Ernie Mayne

The safety of the boating public is significantly better with the arrival of Bribie VMR's newest rescue boat "Bribie 2". Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Queensland LNP senator James McGrath and LNP candidate for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, got a firsthand look at the fast response vessel on a visit to Bribie Island on the 29th August. Senator McGrath said the government contributed $84,000 towards the purchase of the new rescue boat from its “Community Development Grants Program" earlier this year. The new mid-sized rescue vessel allows VMR volunteers to respond more quickly in certain situations and also means they can more easily access tighter regions of the Pumicestone Passage, he said.

Bribie Island VMR Commodore, Nathan Gundy, said the new boat was an exceptional asset for the community. "Since the delivery of "Bribie 2" we have been able to respond to all areas from the passage to the open waters east of Moreton Island. This vessel has far exceeded all VMR Bribie's expectations and is an essential asset to our emergency service partners," he said.

Beach driving has been a bit of a concern of the past few weeks we had a head on accident up the beach luckily nobody got hurt so here are some tips for driving on the beach.

Safety on the Beach Parking your vehicle

• Park well away from traffic areas, but not on the sand dunes as that is illegal. • Park at an angle to the water so approaching traffic can see that you have stopped.

• Never approach dingoes or encourage their attention. Stay in your vehicle and allow them to pass. Give way to other vehicles • Inland tracks are usually single lane and can become busy. • Never drive off the track. • Use the passing bays provided. • Be courteous. The closest vehicle to a bay should move off the track. The other vehicle should wait until the move is complete.

• Snatch strap and shovel • Traction mats. Vehicle permits are required to drive on beaches and inland tracks in recreation areas.

Sand Whiting where to catch Sand whiting inhabit sandy areas within bays and coastal beaches at a depth generally between 0.5-6m. When targeting whiting within an estuary focus on the sand flats during an incoming tide, particularly the upper reaches of the tidal front, and channel edges during the run out tide. On the beach, look for areas of interest such as shallow gutters and holes, corrugated trenches and divots, and also the edges of washy sandbars.

Remember: the beach is also a road, so sit well out of the traffic lanes and watch your children at all times.

Give way to pedestrians • Visitors will not hear your vehicle over the sound of the surf and wind. • Always slow down and drive carefully where there are pedestrians. Give way to wildlife • Drive slowly around (not through) flocks of birds. They are resting after long, exhausting migration flights.

To get more enjoyment out of your Sand whiting fishing it’s best to adopt a finesse approach with a lightweight, light line outfit. In protected waters go for something like a 2-4kg 7 foot graphite spin rod and a 1000-2500 size reel to suit. On the surf beaches use a light 10-12 foot rod and balance with a 4000-6000 size spin reel or a lightweight graphite Alvey.

Line and leader •Bait: 4-6lb monofilament & 0.5-1.0m 4-6lb fluorocarbon leader. • Lure: 2-4lb braid & 1.5m 4-6lb monofilament leader (the shorter the more action imparted). Terminal Tackle • Size 4-8 long shank hook, size 4-8 swivel, and size 0-2 ball sinker (slightly heavier in the surf).

• Give way to traffic coming downhill. Heavy vehicles and vehicles with trailers have right of way in most situations as they are more difficult to manoeuvre.

• Air pump

Remember: tracks can be rough so allow plenty of travel time. Your passengers will not enjoy a fast bumpy ride and may be injured if you drive too fast. Go slower than the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions.

We have been experiencing great weather over the past few weeks and plenty of fish being caught throughout the Passage and on the Surfside. With all the surfside campsites booked for the next few weeks it is best to if you are wanting to camp on the surfside it is best to book well in advance as to not be disappointed. The Taylor are running on the surfside with some good sizes being caught at 1st, 2nd, 3rd Lagoon and near campsites they are also popping up in the passage near the Bribie Bridge and Red Beach so grab yourself some pilchards and catch a feed. Whiting are loving the Live Blood Worms with one angler catching 30 on the surfside near the 8th Ave Carpark with more being caught at Red Beach, Avon Wrecks and Turners Camp. We have also seen a lot of Bream throughout the passage banksia Canals, Avon Wrecks, White Patch and Red Beach make sure to pick up your Live Blood worms and you will catch a feed. The Snapper are being caught at Sandstone Point and The Ripples best bait is Cuttlefish. One of my regular anglers caught a few good size fish at Bellara Snapper 700g, Bream 790g and a Grunter 920g you will have to pump some yabbies for this catch.
