Giving people a choice Award Michael Kelly-Cruise has lived on Bribie Island for over 6 years and he wanted to provide a service for people who cannot afford taxi fares or who are outside of the designated taxi zones. Lots of people at Beachmere, Ningi, Toorbul and Donnybrook cannot use the Bribie or Caboolture taxis because they are not allowed to pick up in the area or it is too far and therefore very expensive. There are also lots of pensioners who don’t drive anymore and really can’t afford taxis. The I Ride Share service provides a point-to-point service with a private driver. It usually involves a driver who is going to a particular destination and is happy to pick someone up and drop them off if they are travelling in the same direction. “It’s really like travelling with a well-known friend or relative. Most of the drivers are semi-retired and enjoy driving, so it gives them a chance to have some company and to provide a service to someone else,” Michael said. There are rules and regulations around this pick-up and drop-off service. The Queensland Department of Transport requires ‘A Drivers Authority’ and strict laws apply to insurances the drivers need to hold. They must have both comprehensive and third party insurance in place. ‘A Drivers Authority’ involves doing police checks to ensure the driver is a safe driver and does not have any criminal charges or convictions. They also have to meet health and safety standards by ensuring that the cars are clean and well maintained. I Ride Share is different to Uber. You don’t need a smart phone to access an
app, which works better for older people or those that want to know the fare before they book the car. On average, it is 50% - 60% cheaper than using a taxi, of course that depends on the journey. However, you always know what it will cost before you confirm your booking. You book by phone and you should need to call at least 20 minutes before you need to leave. The operator will tell you if there are any drivers going your way, how much it will cost and if there are any delays they keep you informed by phone. The point of difference with I Ride Share is not only their personalized service and cheaper prices, but they offer bottled water for your journey should you require it. “I don’t think this will have any impact on the Bribie Taxi Service. The I Ride Share service will really provide a service for people who would not usually travel by taxi,” Michael said. Congratulations to Elise and John Griffin who celebrated their platinum (70th) wedding anniversary with family at the Kai restaurant at Bongaree on Christmas Eve. They are frequent visitors to Bribie Island, staying at their Bribie “apartment” at the home of their daughter, as most of their immediate family are locals. They were married on Christmas Eve of 1946 at Brighton following John’s discharge from the RAAF after war service that included time in Papua New Guinea. The pair were very young when they first met prior to the war and were chaperoned at-all-times by Elise’s older sister. Elise lived on a poultry farm
in North Road Brighton and John at Sandgate. John enlisted in the RAAF in 1942 at the age of 18 years and was discharged in April 1946. John is now 92 and Elise is 89, they were married at 22 and 19 respectively. They have 2 daughters and a son, 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren plus 2 great-great grandchildren and still live independently in Carseldine. They are both still active, Elise loves to ride her bike of a morning, water aerobics, lawn bowls and aerobics. While John is an avid reader who also enjoys his computer. They are pictured holding their wedding photo that was framed and presented to them by their family at their celebration dinner.

Caboolture River Country Music Festival
The Caboolture River winds its way down from the D’Aguilar Range into the glorious Pumistone Passage, passing no less than 8 communities along the way. Our river binds us and for many locals sustains us. We boat on it, swim in it, water our crops and gardens from it or, for many of us, simply admire its tranquil beauty. So, when the time came to name a not for profit, community based country music festival in Caboolture, it was a no brainer for the committee. When the first Urban Country Music Festival took place in 2004 Caboolture was a different place, indeed the world was a different place. From that small community based festival, the event grew over the next 12 years to become a shining example of how small towns can unite together and create something wonderful. When MBRC announced that the event had become unviable and that they were shutting it down in 2016, the community at large was devastated, many outraged. Caboolture has had its share of heartache over the last few years. The merger of its financially stable Shire Council with the nonfinancial Pine Rivers Shire and Redcliffe City Councils in 2008, the 2010 & 2011 flooding, the cancellation of the 2015 Urban CMF due again to flood and most recently the bad press surrounding the failure of staff at its Child Safety office to protect little Mason Lee from a most horrendous death - but this amazing community is one that won’t be shut down; won’t be judged by its failures but by its successes. In July, this year the call went out to the residents, charities, businesses and the Australian Country Music artists. Can we do this? Will you help us? Will you support us? The first responses came from the artists! They LOVE Caboolture and were just as upset as us that Urban was no more; they offered their time and support to stage a free launch concert in September. How humbling it was to know that they love us
as much as we love them. Next came the residents and businesses. Can you join? Will you volunteer? Can you sponsor? How can you help? Over 200 people attended that first meeting and we were mightily heartened. We CAN do this. We can give country music fans an affordable, not for profit, Australian country music experience put on by our amazing community. We’ve faced numerous hurdles along the way. Venue issues, access issues, a failure by businesses and some local officials to support but the belief of the executive committee that this can be done and will be done “By the Community for the Community” has stood firm. Caboolture needs this Festival and what’s more our community deserves this Festival. We want all of Queensland, indeed all of Australia to get behind us. Our festival slogan is “By the Community, For the Community” but we are extending our invitation: By our community for all communities! A substantial fire at Pacific Harbour Golf course late last month encroached into adjoining pine forest. The fire burnt out much of the pine forest and scrubland adjoining the course near the fifth hole. Club professional Zac Chipperfield told Island and Surrounds the fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette butt. “It was a hot and windy day on Thursday December 29 and while we are not sure what started the fire it looks like someone perhaps discarded a cigarette butt,” Mr Chipperfield said. Helicopter water dumping was used to quell the fire and fire tenders were used to gain access to the difficult terrain the
following day to ensure the fire was completely blanketed out. “The fire jumped the firebreak and went into the pine forest and it ended up burning fair bit of the pine trees,” Mr Chipperfield said. “Helicopters dropped water on to the fire and it was pretty tough to get in there until the next day with the trucks.” He said it was a timely warning perhaps for people to be careful about discarded cigarettes or using fire utensils in the hot and windy conditions over summer. “There was no damage to the course. Actually, it did us a favour to a certain extent, though, getting rid of some of the scrub,” he added.
Popular singing quartet tune up for Music in the Gallery again at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre Two Plus Three Quartet founder, Alan Blackman knows he has people scratching their head when he tells them his singing quartet’s name. Rapidly calculating the sum, it would be expected there are FIVE singers in the mix. It’s just a little idiosyncrasy Alan likes to attach to this talented group he founded with local, Julie Earner, in 2015. Both he and Julie had come from musical theatre backgrounds and loved the opportunity of dressing up before an audience for performance of semiclassical and musical numbers with style and class. They return to the Community Arts Centre on February 18th, with a different repertoire, but similar in style to the previous, that is, Broadway and LloydWebber favourites and some glorious soaring arias from semi-operatic shows. “The basic premise of our group is that all love to sing and harmonise,’’ Alan says. “We tend to concentrate on more mature numbers, which have proved popular over the years and will therefore be appreciated by the typical audience on the Island. With young Katie (Katelyn Waters) in the group, they also include more recent popular
numbers, which gives us a greater musical spread and can introduce the audience to songs from some of the wonderful musicals more recently produced.’’ Alan says they seek to appeal to people on Bribie and surrounds who appreciate all types of music. “We try to provide our audience with a full and varied program including solos, piano solos, duets as well as group harmonies, so as to provide a concert experience for the community.” Tickets for Music in the Gallery at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre with Two Plus Three are $15 and available by phoning 3408 9288. New Year New Skills New Art Program
Starting Tuesday 31st January Do you want to learn to paint and draw? If you answered yes, then read on. If you said no, but yes I would like to try a new technique, then the new Art program at the Ningi Crafty Shed may be just what you are looking for. This art program is not directed at ‘learning to paint or draw in only one form’, but involves the whole idea of expressing your creativity. For the beginner, Artist Susan Young is offering the opportunity to ‘test the water’ so to speak. If you have never drawn, painted or tried various techniques then this program has many opportunities for you to explore your creativity. And for experienced creatives the opportunity to try something new or add another dimension to your existing arts practice. Susan’s program is unique in that she is offering you the chance to ‘try before you buy’ with no materials to be purchased up front for any of the tutorials, just a weekly tutorial fee, alleviating the stress and costs associated with the learning so that participants can focus on acquiring the skills or just as relevant, decide that perhaps this particular artistic expression is or is not for them. Susan has found in past workshops and classes that more often than not, there are
two extremes when a participant is coming along to experience something for the first time, with some being inspired and others just not enjoying the experience and leaving, having spent a large amount of money on materials that will either go to waste, be given away or packed away for years. The arts tutorial program is divided into months with a typical month divided into the following format. Week 1: Learning about the new materials, Weeks 2 and 3: experimenting with the materials and techniques and Week 4: Producing a finished art work using the learned materials and techniques. Tutorials will be held on Tuesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm however, if there is enough interest in the option of repeating the same tutorial on Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm this can be arranged. Start with a cup or bowl. Chop finely onion, tomato, cheese, bacon and capsicum.
Next I put an egg in and mix it well. Add a dash of milk (optional). Salt and pepper to finish and if you like chilli add that too. Pour mixture into the mould and cooked in the fire. It is best to cook your jaffle in some coals and not an open flame. Turn your jaffle when you think it is cooked, you can have a little peek every now and then by opening the iron just a little to see if the toast is browned. Be careful when you bite into the jaffle, they come out of the fire at high temperature and tend to burn your mouth. A Jaffle iron could be your best friend on any camping trip, fill them with anything you like from yesterday’s leftovers to today’s gourmet recipe.

Do you remember the humble jaffle iron? Our camping trips as kids are fondly remembered and the jaffle iron was always a standard packed. There are a few different varieties, one being round and made from tin (you have to cut too much off your square bread) and the other is square, rather heavy duty and made from cast iron. The cast iron is perfect in the open fire. A jaffle is a quick and easy way to make a toasted sandwich. First you have to butter the outside of the bread so that it doesn’t stick to the iron, and place into one side of the jaffle iron. Next, stuff as much as you can into the jaffle using just enough ingredients to still be able to close the other side over it and not have the contents ooze out all over the fire. There is quite a knack to getting this right. Many times I have seen someone trying to break an egg into the bread only to have it slide off into the dirt. I have come up with a way of having the most delicious jaffle, including the egg.

I recently travelled around 8000 kilometres to Tasmania and back, it was a wonderful holiday which included quite a bit of 4x4 driving on and off beach tracks. That means that the road is not always as smooth as travelling down a bitumen road. One of the things that made our camping trip more enjoyable was the type of containers I used for our food. I love to cook especially on an open fire, and herbs, spices and fresh produce are always among the first things that I pack. Finding containers that are compact and secure has been quite a challenge but I have recently come across these stackable containers. They have the ability to screw onto each other and come in three sizes. I used a stack of 4 in my fridge, the largest container is approx. the same size as those small salad containers from the deli (you know the ones that always have the lid pop off?). They were great for leftover onion, tomato, pickled chillies and cheese. The smaller ones I used for cornflour, spices and, would you believe, toothpicks? Although these little containers are not totally leak-proof (so, NO beetroot) they proved to be a great asset in the fridge and the pantry. Sometimes it’s the smallest of things that can make all the difference to a great escape.

Local business supports STEPS Charity

Ultim8 Fitness Gym is a local family business. Matthew Hatton and his wife Rachelle started the gym three years ago and now have 900 members. Matthew and Rachelle started Ultim8 Fitness to encourage health and fitness within their community. They love living and working on Bribie Island and feel very committed to giving back where possible. Every year since they opened the gym, Matthew and Rachelle have initiated a charity event to raise money for local charities. Last year they did a bike ride to raise money for a young girl struck down by cancer. In 2016, Matthew met Angela Miles, the Fund-Raising Manager for STEPS Charity. Matthew didn’t know much about STEPS but after speaking with Angela he was inspired by the work they are doing within the community. STEPS offers a pathway for those with disability, who might otherwise struggle,
to live and work independently by providing training, employment, and community services, that teach people real skills which can help them achieve their goals and aspirations in the real world. “In many ways, we are offering a pathway to wellbeing, by encouraging people to live healthier and more active lives, so in talking to Angela I felt strongly that we could do something to help STEPS charity,” Matthew said. From this, the idea of a calendar was born and it took many months and a great deal of support to realise the endproduct. “Without the help and support of local businesses we could not have completed the calendar shoot,” Matthew said. The photographer, Mark Brittan, provided his time free of charge and produced some amazing photographs. ‘Sports First Bribie Island’ provided clothing and equipment, with everyone receiving a spray tan by K Beauty. Bal-
ance Nutrition and the Coffee Bus Ningi made sure everyone was well-feed and watered through the long hours of photography. They started the project in June 2016 and released the calendar in December. The calendar is $10 with 100% of the proceeds goes to STEPS Charity. It is on sale at Sports First Bribie Island, The Woorim Newsagency and at Ultim8 Fitness. “So far we have sold 200 copies so we have raised $2,000 which is a great start but we are hoping to raise $10,000.” Matthew said. Ultim8 Fitness caters for all ages and abilities and is open 24/7 allowing members to workout whenever they want. Ultim8 provides a very friendly atmosphere with aerobics, a cardio room and weights room as well as a sauna. They also have a crèche so busy mums can enjoy some quality time without worrying about the kids. The sauna and crèche are only available
The State Government has introduced a new Fair Rent policy which came into force on December 5. Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams said that the Fair Rent Policy would benefit people in our community with disabilities, carers and people trying to further themselves through education. Mr Williams said seniors, people with a disability and carers are amongst
the groups who will benefit from the Government’s new Fair Rent Policy. “Across the state the new Fair Rent Policy will benefit around 40,000 public housing tenants who can expect to see a decrease of between $5 to $11 in their weekly rent. While reductions are dependent on household circumstances, around 38,000 seniors receiving a Pension Supplement are likely to see a savings of
$8 a week. Bribie Island in 1936 had its own “Red Dog” story and with the prequel movie “Red Dog – True Blue” released its fitting that “Ranger’s” story is told. A little wooden cross used to stand on the sand dunes at Main Beach (Woorim), Bribie Island, just in front of the lifesavers’ club house and fixed to it was a glasscovered frame, behind which were framed these words: “In memory of Ranger, Died May 8th, 1936. If there be an after world for such as thou – May the juiciest of bones be thy reward” The little cross was erected, as the wording implies, to the memory of a dog, just one of the many friends and allies of man. Ranger was a dog with no especial owner. A black, retriever type, dog he was the special pet of the Bribie Lifesavers’ team, and a general favourite with residents and visitors of the Island, going from one to the other for an occasional meal and a little affection. His particular pals, the lifesavers, were only there during the week-ends and holidays. When the SS Koopa or Doomba arrived each Saturday Ranger would be there to meet the team and after greeting them all joyfully would race away through the scrub, covering the three miles from the boat berth to the main beach ahead of the bus and be waiting for the boys to arrive at the clubhouse. He would not ride in the bus, apparently, he thought that he should be
the perfect host and receive his guests at the door.

The lifesavers were heart-broken when they found him dead. They buried him in the sand in front of the club-house and the flag was flown at half-mast. They placed the cross on top of his grave, overlooking the sea, in memory of a faithful friend. When the team were on beach patrol, so was Ranger, and he would accompany them into the sea, always swimming out beyond the furthest swimmer. As long as the men were in the water he would continue to swim around beyond them. He remained at his self-appointed task until the patrol withdrew, sometimes being in the sea for hours on end. Whenever beach sports or team competitions were held Ranger took his place at the front of the team, trotting along, tail erect, as the men marched.

This was found at Banksia Beach canals. Please, be aware of their presence. If you find one, don’t play with it. The blue-lined is one of three species of the venomous blue-ringed Octopus. It is most commonly found around intertidal rocky shore areas and coastal waters to the depth of 15 metres between Southern Queensland and Southern New South Wales.

Local female electrician wins Apprentice of the Year 2016

Petra, Cassandra and Hans In November 2016, Cassandra Denison, now 21 years old, completed her 4th year apprenticeship with Hans Electrical Service, a locally owned, family run business and was awarded the 2016 Best Electrical Apprentice Award. I spoke with Cassandra and asked her why she wanted to be an Electrician and she told me she always wanted to do some sort of trade. “I grew up in the country, my brother has an air conditioning and refrigeration business and I use to help him repair parts and things. I love working with my hands and I love puzzles,” said Cassandra. It’s rare to find women, in what is considered a dangerous and male dominated trade, but Cassandra was lucky that when she did her year 12 work experience with Hans Electrical Service they were prepared to give her a chance. “She was better than any of the boys we trialed. She impressed us from the
beginning with her work ethic, attitude and reliability,” said Petra, Co-owner of Hans Electrical Service. In January 2013, Cassandra commenced her apprenticeship and with the support of Hans and Petra she won the ‘Pride of Workmanship Award in May 2014. Cassandra was definitely an outstanding apprentice. Many businesses would not be so adventurous as to give a young girl an opportunity to work as an electrician but Hans and Petra appreciate determination and understand what it is like to do something that few people would risk. Originally from a small German village about 15 kilometres from Basel near the Swiss border. Hans and Petra first came to Australia on their honeymoon in 1990 and fell in love with the beautiful coast and the people. They determined they would apply to migrate to Australia but it would be 18 years before their dream was to become a reality. During that time, they travelled to Australia 16 times. The immigration laws governing who can migrate to Australia are very strict, therefore it was not until 2006 when the profession of electrician was listed as a needed skill that their application was finally approved. The process took 18

So, how did they end up in Sandstone Point? “We knew we wanted to be in Queensland, near Brisbane, as we have close friends in Brisbane. So, we travelled around the Sunshine Coast and saw the sign to Bribie Island. Once we drove across the bridge we were hooked. This was definitely the place for us,” said Petra. Hans ran his own electrical business in Germany for 20 years. In 2010, Hans Electrical Service started as a sole trader and the company became a Pty Ltd in July 2014. It’s quite a challenge moving to a country with a different culture and language and starting your own business but Hans Electrical Service is successful because ‘Customer Service’ is very important to Hans and Petra. In 2014, Hans Electrical Service won the ‘Excellence in Business Award’ in Customer Service. They go the extra mile for the customer and the testimonials on the website really tell the story. Hans Electrical Service is Beacon Lighting’s preferred electrician and can provide referral cards allowing the
customer to purchase items for the trade price. Hans and Petra are very connected to this community. “We think it is vital to support local organisations and we want to give something back to the community. We love to live here and are very grateful,” said Petra. Through Hans Electrical Service they are proud supporters of ‘Sandstone Point Candles by Candlelight’ and the ‘Abbey Medieval Festival’. They also donate money to local organisations including The Golden Age Association and Meals on Wheels in Woorim. We certainly wish Cassandra good luck with her career and I know that with people like Petra and Hans to guide her, things can only grow from here.

Be smart this year... Happy New Year everyone! Yes, it’s resolution time again.
Resolutions are wonderful! I wouldn’t be writing this today if it wasn’t for my 2008 New Year resolution. Yep, I was 48, fat, flabby and forlorn till I resolved to be 30kgs lighter, fit and fabulous!
See resolutions can change your life completely but to do that you need to be S.M.A.R.T. about your goal. “Great she’s rambling with acronyms now” I hear you mutter, yep I can still hear you! Alright SMART is - Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic and Timely
SPECIFIC – “I want to lose weight” is not a goal, it’s a wish or an idea. You could step onto the scales tomorrow and be 100grams lighter. There you go, you’ve lost weight! Goal achieved, No? But that’s what you said you wanted?
To be SPECIFIC you must answer these 6 questions Who do I need? What do I want to accomplish? Where am I doing it? When will I reach my goal. Which things need to be done and Why do I REALLY want to reach this goal. A real goal sounds like “I will go to exercises classes 3 days a week for 6 months and I will lose 5kgs so I can wear my favourite pants again”
MEASURABLE - When you measure your progress, you stay on track, and when you measure and find you are closer to your goal you stay focused. To determine if your goal is measurable, you need to ask How much, How many? How will I know when it is accomplished? You must know what you are aiming for, and if you have reached your goal. You won’t know that if you don’t measure your progress “I want to be able to jog 10kms in June” If you don’t measure, did you jog 8kms or 10kms?
ATTAINABLE - You can attain any goal if you plan wisely. Goals that may have seemed far away eventually move closer and become more attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow. When you list goals you build your self-image. You see yourself as worthy of these goals. Until my resolution I couldn’t believe I could lose 30kgs. But once that goal was set it was almost magical the way things fell into place. Never be afraid of reaching for a big goal. REALISTIC - To be realistic, a goal must be something that you are both willing and able to do. A goal can be both big and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how big your goal should be. But don’t sell yourself short! A big goal can be easier to reach if it is a labour of love or you discover your passion.
TIMELY - A goal must have a time frame. If you want to lose 10kgs, when do you want to lose it by? “Someday” won’t work. And next week isn’t realistic. But if you give it a realistic timeframe, “12 weeks” then you’ve set your goal into motion and the magic will start. So write down your goal and go through these S.M.A.R.T. steps, if you need help call me, I’ve been there and done this with myself and with clients and it works!
Senior Gentle Chair Exercises Before you start
Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started!
The exercises below are stretching and balance exercises similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other? Is one knee more stable/ stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if walking and/or turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.
Chair Knee Lifts
Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise one foot up to a height that is comfortable for YOU! Hold for a count of “one and two” Lower foot back to ground and hold for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly on the other leg – remember one leg may be more stable than the other Only do as many knee raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Chair Arm Raises
Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart. Rest arms on your legs. Reach both arms out from body keeping them as straight as you are comfortable with Hold for count of “one and two” Without bending your elbows reach up to a place you are comfortable with Hold for a count of “one and two”. Slowly lower arms back to resting on your knees Repeat slowly, only do as many are raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Chair Back Stretch
Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet slightly apart and feet flat on the ground Lace the fingers of your hands together and place them across the front of your right knee. SLOWLY Lean as far toward your right knee as you can comfortable go, breathing out as you do. Do not pull on your knee to help your reach forward! Hold for the count “one and two” SLOWLY return to an upright position. Spend 3 seconds leaning forward and 3 seconds returning. Repeat 4 times on the right side then repeat on the left. Rest
Chair 3/4 Squats
Use a very stable chair! Or the Kitchen bench. Stand behind the chair and place your hands on the top of the chair back. SLOWLY Squat slightly, lowering your hips about 4 inches, making sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes. Count “one and two” on the way lowering yourself Hold for a count “one and two” And SLOWLY stand back up. Wait for a count of 20 before repeating Focus on trying to keep your heels down, if you can. Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok! Only go as low as is comfortable for you and both heels remain on the ground. Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up. Rest

Hole in the Water is a not for profit charity that has been created to assist those families who are suffering the loss or near loss of a child from drowning by Sue Mayo, General Manager at Australian Crawl Fitness & Leisure Centres based at the Caboolture Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre located in Burpengary Queensland. Sue has been actively involved in the aquatic and learn to swim industry for over 30 years and after recently experiencing the grief of friends losing a child to drowning, Sue wanted to ‘shake the world’ to make everyone open their eyes. “Even though we are teaching our children to swim, supervision around any water is so important” she said “and we need to spread the word”. She was not the only one that was feeling this way! The drowning statistics in Australia have increased and drastically so in recent months. Coupled with this, and Sue’s own experience as a swim teacher in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji - Sue has decided to start a new locally-based charity to help raise awareness for water safety and support for those families that do suffer the tragic loss of a child due to drowning. And so ‘Hole In The Water’ has been formed with the help of local volunteers, parents and swim teachers who are aiming to spread the word across Australia.
The charity has chosen as their mascot a teddy bear - every child’s faithful companion and it will be featured in promotional pictures and videos to help spread the message. Along with the teddy bear, a white ribbon emblazon with little baby feet to wear with pride. Both the teddy bear and the feet on the ribbon are coloured blue to indicate the colour of water. The ribbons will will be available for purchase for a gold coin donation. As Hole in the Water grows so to will their merchandise range. Hole in the Water is envisaging that on the 5th of February 2017, communities across Australia will hold an event i.e. a BBQ, a fete, a carnival with the aim to start the conversation to help raise awareness and raise funds for families in need. All funds that are raised for Hole in the Water will be held in trust to be allocated to assist families who have been effected by aquatic tragedy in any way they can be used. You might have seen the newcomer to the Passage, a big black Pirate looking vessel moored near Shirley Creek at Bongaree! That is Notorious! Its awesome silhouette can be seen from the bridge and has been stationary for a few days now. The owners of the ship, Graham and Felicite Wylie have been touring the east coast of Australia, this being their fourth voyage north from Victoria. Notorious is the only sailing Caravel in the southern hemisphere. Researched, designed and created by the extremely clever owner Graham. It is also the only Lateen rigged ship in Australia making it unique in every way. Graham and his lovely wife Felicite are originally from a small costal town in Victoria and Felicite told me the history of the ship and how it came to be. After a particularly wet season in Victoria the farmers found that there were lots of windbreak trees falling over. The farmers were happily scraping them
up and burning them. Graham salvaged many of the trees and started to build furniture from the old wood. Trouble was that every time he produced a beautiful furniture piece, he sold it and lost touch with the wood forever. He had been gathering the Monterey Cypress rather than see it burned to ashes and decided that he would rather build something that he could have, and wanted to use most of it in one go, all 300 tons of it! He built a horizontal band saw (with a 7ft cut) so that he could mill the largest of the trees, and after thousands of hours’ research, a couple of years making small models and drawing up plans, he begun to make the beautiful Notorious. The keel was laid in 2002, made from a huge piece of ironbark, rescued from the tip after the local council had disassembled an unused overpass. 3000 wooden nails have been driven into the planking and countless hours of labour have gone into creating this most

The Australian Vintage Aviation Society (TAVAS) is a unique Australian flying museum, based at Caboolture that houses the only collection of World War flying aircraft in Australia. They have developed a reputation worldwide for not just bringing history back to life, but displaying it in a way that is interesting and relevant to all Australians. On the weekend of April 22-23 next year, “The Knights of the Sky” will return to Caboolture Aerodrome for the second annual vintage air show.
“We want people to become interested and learn more about the early aviation pioneers, in particular the large part Australians had in development of aviation before and after the First World War,” said Andrew Carter, the Founding Director of TAVAS. “To do so, as a museum, we have to be interesting and relevant. The days of the static museum are dead. People expect interactivity – and rightly so, as that is one way of increasing learning. So, it is important that our aircraft are built just like they were a century ago and perform the same way, so that we can display them to the public and they can see firsthand just how these aircraft performed and can begin to appreciate what the airmen of the day really had to contend with. If a picture tells a thousand words, then seeing and hearing our aircraft operate is far more informative than just reading dozens of books about the subject – many of which were written by people who weren’t even pilots!” Mr Carter said to make history relevant to the people of today, “we need to compare it directly to today”. “The first time we did that was when we obtained our 1909 Johnson Monoplane reproduction. This aircraft was originally built by the Johnson brothers who would go on to be famous for their marine outboard engines. What fascinates me about this, is they built it without ever having seen an aeroplane before! They built their own 60 hp two stroke engine for it (without a throttle) and taught themselves how to fly in it. It had no instruments, seat, or even a seatbelt. They just sat on a canvas strap between two poles, started the
engine and off they went,” Mr Carter said. “We tried to recreate one of their photos, to help people realise that the item they are looking at today is the what these guys had 100 years ago. The original picture showed the oldest brother Lou Johnson, standing beside his aircraft in 1914. So, I struck the same pose with our reproduction in 2014.” The first year of the Air Show was a great success, Mr Carter said, but TAVAS was hoping to attract more businesses to support the event. Australia’s 1 Squadron started flying operations on June 12th 1916. So, in June 2016, we flew our Bristol F2B in Australian 1 Squadron colours alongside current 1 Squadron aircraft that now operate out of Amberley, west of Brisbane. We had Australia’s first fighter attack aircraft operating alongside its latest. It was quite a task to organise, but well worth it. It was a very fitting tribute to 1 Squadron and their history and it was a unique opportunity to highlight the differences in fighter aircraft design and development. There is nowhere else in the world that a picture like this could be taken.” “The best way we can demonstrate history and make it relevant to people today is through our Great War Flying Display. This is a remembrance of all pilots who have fought in all wars past. It is not a celebration of war or killing machines, but a commemoration of what has happened before and the brave people who took new technology into the skies in the defence of their nation. Our inaugural display was held over the Anzac weekend last year and we will be hosting an even bigger and better one this year, with more aircraft in attendance. We will quite literally have aircraft flying from WW1, WW2, Korean and Vietnam wars as well as many modern aircraft in attendance. It is a great opportunity for people to get up close and personal to these historical aircraft, but then actually get to see them performing airborne. In doing so they get firsthand knowledge of how

The TAVAS Great War Flying Display will take place over the 22nd and 23rd of April 2017 at Caboolture Airfield. One of only 2 flying reproductions in the world There are only three rotary engine powered aircraft flying in Australia and TAVAS owns two of them. “Our other one is an original 1918 example fitted to our accurate reproduction Fokker D8, which was the last German fighter to
enter WW1. It does not have a muffler, so is quite loud and as it consumes castor oil, it can leave an interesting light smoke trail. But its short demonstration flight will be the highlight of the show, simply because people have never seen or heard anything quite like it before – yet 100 years ago, they were commonplace. Those types of engines were a technology that just didn’t last after the war,” Mr Carter added.

The Flying Display weekend is held to demonstrate the aircraft of that time so people can develop an appreciation of the men who designed, built and flew them - and to raise awareness of our museum, where people can learn more about this fascinating period of aviation in a truly interactive way. The Display event, always held on the weekend immediately before Anzac Day, has aircraft flying from WW1, WW2, Korean and Vietnam wars and where possible we include aircraft currently of the Navy’s modern submarine attack helicopters and hope to have more operating again next year. Over the weekend we also have a unique collection of vintage type aircraft based at the airfield on displaying and flying, as well as other aircraft flying in from other airfields. It is a very busy weekend, with plenty of movement and activity to keep everyone interested. We have plenty of facilities and food vendors to ensure everyone has a great time. The first year was a great success and we are very much looking forward to doing it much bigger and better in 2017 – so keep the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of April free. If you already are you will be delighted to hear about some new offerings. This year celebrates 25 years for Bribie U3A providing a huge variety of classes to enhance your skills, knowledge and network of friends. Over 140 different classes offer something for anyone who has a few hours each week for themselves. It is expected that student Enrolment numbers will increase in 2017 so you need to look at what’s on offer and attend one of the two Enrolment days in late January. Many new and entertaining offerings such as “Burlesque on a Chair” will appeal to those with a wide range of abilities, while “Tap Dancing” is specifically for beginners, and “The Didgeridoo” can be studied and appreciated or even played. There is also an “Introduction to Dog obedience” on offer. For those interested in “Australia” a chance to understand its history and geography in the context of Explorers and Settlers. Closer to home one can appreciate the local flora and fauna of “Bribie’s Natural Environment”. There are also one-off Insight presentations during Term 1 on “Life and other Animals” and “Earthquakes and Tsunamis”. More and more people are discovering the inspiring range of learning and participation offerings at U3A. With
major classroom extensions recently completed at U3A, student numbers have increase, and several new Tutors are offering new subjects of interest. The next opportunity to join U3A and enrol for 2017 classes will be on two days in late January. Enrolment days for Term 1 are Saturday 21st January and Wednesday 25th January from 9.00am to 12.00 at the Recreation Hall on First Avenue. The comprehensive daily Timetable includes the most of the previous courses, together with a significant number of new courses. The program has been designed to cater for a wide variety of interests and new joiners. For the enquiring mind, new courses such as “20th Century Russia” from Revolution to Revolution, and general “English and Maths” will provide correct use and understanding of these daily life skills. For those who like games there is an opportunity to learn and play Mahjong , Chess, Scrabble, Bridge and 500 ,or attend the “Memory- Use it or Lose it” course, for those who enjoy a mental challenge. This year will be the 25th Anniversary of Bribie Island U3A, during which time it has grown from a handful of people doing just a few classes, to one of the most successful and efficient U3A’s in Australia. There is something there for everyone …..and lots of new friends, stimulation and social fun to be had.

Lift off for Moreton Bay mossie chopper Over the weekend, Moreton Bay Regional Council continued its aerial treatment program for mosquitoes as ideal conditions triggered saltmarsh mosquito larvae to hatch. Council’s aerial treatment program targeted more than 2500 hectares of saltmarsh areas across the region, treating saltmarsh mosquito larvae before they pupate. On Saturday, council treated areas including Lawnton, Murrumba Downs, Deception Bay, Griffin, Mango Hill, Rothwell, Clontarf and Redcliffe. On Sunday, the aerial treatment program covered areas including Burpengary East, Beachmere, Ningi, Elimbah, Toorbul and
Bribie Island. The treatments coincide with ongoing on-ground treatments across council’s parks, recreations and reserves and earlier aerial programs which occurred throughout December and on January 3 and 5. Most mosquitoes however breed in backyards and residents are encouraged to help combat mosquitoes in and around the home by taking five minutes to empty any containers that may carry stagnant water, make sure their pool remains chlorinated and regularly apply mosquito repellent. Residents can also opt for outdoor barrier treatments available at hardware stores to treat for adult mosquitoes.

HISTORY SNIPPETS - Dawn of Queensland’s first Island Tourist Resort STEAM TO WOODY POINT, SCARBOROUGH and BRIBIE The new steamer Mavis will, on and after Monday the 15th instant, make weekly trips to above places, with Passengers and Cargo from Campbell’s Wharf. All freights payable in Brisbane Jas. Campbell and Sons, Agents.” Brisbane Telegraph 8 January 1883 So, in 1883 began Queensland’s first Island Tourist Resort, developed by private enterprise, the brainchild of James Campbell and his family. However, the meaning of the word development may be misleading. They did not obtain land and subdivide it for sale but concentrated on creating tourism, obtaining land leases from the
State Government between 1902 and 1922 on which they built the Bongaree Jetty, waterfront holiday cabins (known as the Twelve Apostles), a cafe, guest house, and caretaker’s residence. Brief facts of the family are listed below in chronological order: a remarkable migrant family who contributed so much to Queensland, Brisbane and Bribie Island. 1830 James Campbell born on 6 March in Auchterader, Perthshire Scotland. 1839 Transportation of convicts to Brisbane ceased and free settlers moved into Moreton Bay area (officially 1842). 1853 James married Mary Mitchell in Perthshire Scotland in February and
(with an assisted passage on the ship (John Fielden) they arrived in Brisbane on 12 June. 1854 James saved enough money to open a building materials store in George Street. 1860 He developed a lucrative market for lime, cement and plaster obtained from Moreton Bay coral. 1870s Expansion into milling and selling timber. Progressively established sawmills from Gympie to Kyogle. 1881 He built a steam sawmill on Coochin Creek, about 4 miles from its entrance to Pumicestone Passage. Transported sawn timber to Brisbane by sailing cutter and then contracted to have built the paddle steamer named Mavis. The town of Campbellville

evolved around the mill with other industries, shops, post office etc. and some 200 residents. 1882 He established the firm James Campbell and Sons, diversified into prefabricated houses, purchased Petrie’s quarry at Albion, the Buderim Sugar-Mill and the Redbank brickworks. 1883. Campbell’s new steamer Mavis began weekly passenger trips to Bribie, beginning Queensland’s Island Tourist Industry. 1890 James Campbell and Sons moved their sawmill to Albion and Campbellville began to slowly die. 1893 The end came quickly after extensive flooding silted the Passage preventing ships reaching Campbellville.

Stop the presses! Daniel Meade turns 100!

A message of community Ken Hill comments I am not a man of great religious persuasion, but celebrated Catholic rebel priest Father Bob from Port Melbourne in Victoria always has a great Christmas-New Year message. Despite our mistrust of migrants nowadays because of the religious fervour of Middle Eastern origins, it is time now to embrace people of all cultures and build communities. Isn’t it the African people who say a child cannot be raised by parents alone; it needs a whole village? Similarly, our communities, big or small, country or suburban, could all take Father Bob’s advice and bring people together. I know my neighbourhood is not overtly friendly. That’s because people like to keep to themselves and value their privacy. But there is a lot of loneliness and I suspect bitterness amongst people on Bribie Island because they don’t value a simple hello and conversation that could make their world better and a better place for all. There are a lot of lonely aged people, as Father Bob says, because if you live long enough people around you dwindle for one reason or another and also fall off their mortal coil. Therefore, it is commonsense to embrace new neighbours, new friends... and you don’t have to get involved to any great degree. Put on a happy face and don’t they say ‘if you smile the world smiles with you!’
Queens Birthday Message to Dan Meade On January 4, 2017, Daniel Meade became the Oldest Man on Bribie Island. Surrounded by family and friends, he celebrated his 100th Birthday at Bribie Cove and when asked how he felt he said he is ready for 400 more. When Daniel was born in 1917, the birth of a healthy baby boy was a joyous celebration. The “War to end all Wars” was in its final stages and Australia had suffered heavy losses with over 60,000 young men killed and 123,000 casualties. Daniel was born into a time of replenishment and growth - a peaceful time, a time of great inventions. In his first 21 years he saw the invention of hair dryers, kiss-proof lipstick and submachine guns. There were robots; insulin; hearing aids, along with scotch tape and talking pic-tures. Not to mention the electric guitar and the helicopter. In later years the advances in technology have transformed the
world he knew. As a young man, Daniel served in the Australian Navy and was first posted to Darwin and then South Africa. On returning home he got married and had 2 children, Geoffrey and Judith and he and his wife bought a dairy farm in Victoria. One day, Daniel’s wife advised him that she was ‘sick of milking cows’ and that she’d bought a block of land on the Mornington Peninsular’. The family moved and Daniel drove tip trucks with his son Geoff down on the Mornington Peninsular until 1960 when he retired. Sadly, his first wife died in 1970. Daniel married twice after that and has managed to outlive all his wives. Daniel was a keen golfer and was a champion bowler. For many years, Daniel kept grey-hounds as a hobby, which he walked on a daily basis. Bribie was the family holiday destination for many years, initially in their caravan when children were young. When the kids had grown, Daniel and his wife bought a unit and like many, escaped the Victorian winter to our beautiful Island. Daniel’s son Geoff has lived on Bribie for 25 years and with his daughter Judy, and her family also living here it made sense for Daniel to move here from Victoria after his wife passed away. Daniel has called Bribie home for nine years now. When asked what he thought the reason was for his long life he said “Waking up in the morning and getting
out of bed. If you do that you’ll live a long time”. Daniel received the ‘Queens Message’ from Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II and letters from the Governor General His Excellency and General the Honourable, Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), the Prime Minister, Mr. Malcolm Turnbull and also a personal letter from the Minister for Veterans Affairs, The Honourable, Dan Tehan MP congratulating him on reaching 100 years. From all of us at the Island and Surrounds we want to thank Daniel for allowing us to share this special day and we wish Daniel safe passage on the next leg of his journey.

The power of kindness by Phoebe Diamond-Griffin, Madeline Scully and Alexis Thomas
The notion of world peace is often thrown around as the end goal for our world, however, no one ever tends to identify the ingredients that should be used to create the perfect recipe. We have the answer for you. It may seem naïve and simplistic, perhaps even childish, and yet it has the power to change the world. What are we speaking of? Kindness. The depth of kindness we suggest reaches into the depths of hatred and oppression and finds a way to colour the darkness, light. What do we mean by this? Let’s start from the beginning. It is easy to find kindness for those we love, trust and respect and who show us kindness in response. It is the type of kindness that lets us soar and accomplish anything we set our minds to. In fact, it’s even easy to show kindness to those you do not know, to those less fortunate than you, when you have been privileged to have loved ones show you kindness throughout your life. However, what about those who haven’t been privileged to know kindness. Who haven’t been fortunate to have loved ones love them and care for them. Who have lived a life of hate, oppression and bitterness? How do they show kindness to complete strangers, when kindness has never been modelled to them? The answer is simple. Those of us who have been shown
kindness and love and support, model it for them. It’s the idea of the smallest act of kindness can change a person’s life and it can. It does. Complimenting a person’s appearance, smiling and letting a woman with a screaming baby ahead of you at the checkout or holding a heavy door for an elderly gentleman trying to make it through with his walker. Kindness is a language we all know and understand. Mark Twain (1942) once said “Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see” and he was so right. While this is a perfect place to start, if it held all the answers, then we would already have world peace. Unfortunately, this is the easy part. This is the part that comes naturally. This is the part that doesn’t challenge your very core. It’s finding kindness for those who have wronged you, who have broken you, who have destroyed you that is the answer to all this hate and fear. To do this, we must draw on the loving kindness we feel for our most treasure, most precious loved one to find a way to harness the feelings of loving kindness we must show to those we hate. For only then will we begin to repair the wrongs of the past and move towards a future of kindness.

Australian Native Friendly When it comes to Australian Native plants there are some species in the Proteaceae family such as Grevillea and Banksia that have specialised root systems to extract minute parts of phosphorous from the soil that otherwise would be locked up and unavailable to plants. The roots of these plants are so efficient that if we were to apply high concentrations of the soluble nutrient Phosphorous (P) externally, it would cause toxicity and result in death. I have seen mature Banksia integrifolia trees of 10 years plus drop their branches one by one due to over fertilising. This is why you may see written on the label, “Safe for Australian Native’s”, because the phosphorous is relatively low and usually around: (P)=1% to 2.75%. Therefore when used according to directions it is relatively safe. Interesting to note, some blood and bone meals can contain up to 7% phosphorous and although slow release, should be used with care around these sensitive species. So next time you visit the local garden centre you will know how to decipher the jargon, make an informed decision and understand what is actually in the fertiliser and what are the various (N.P.K.) percentages on the label. Let’s Talk Gardens Summer Gardening Summer is here in all its glory and most of our gardens are looking a little drab now that Spring flowering trees, shrubs and ground cover have finished blooming. It is however still possible to have gardens splashed in colours with the addition of such flowering plants as Hibiscus and Geranium, as well as those with brightly coloured foliage such as cordylines and crotons to name just a few. While these may seem a little ‘old fashioned’ they are simply some of the most varied with devoted breeders investing years in producing the hardiest, most disease resistant varieties with foliage and flowers in a myriad of sizes, colours and shapes. They are also some of the best plants for sandy soils such as those that we have locally. If you decide to plant now they will require extra watering for a minimum of 6 weeks while their root systems establish. Watering in the cool of the morning or late in the evening will give your new plants the best opportunity to make use of the available moisture. Additionally, treating them with a pre-planting soak in a seaweed solution such as Seasol and then applying this fortnightly will aid in the growth of new roots as well as helping to reduce transplanting shock.

The Individual Achievement Fund supports residents of the Moreton Bay Region who have qualified or been selected by a peak body to represent Queensland or Australia. Bring on the season Bribie Island Tigers Soccer Club is planning a huge season this year and we are pleased to announce our new head coach for senior men in 2017. Chris Knight is a seasoned and highly respected coach who has enjoyed much success over the years. He has coached at top side and reserve level extensively across the Brisbane competition including at Brisbane Strikers, Bayside and Holland Park. He has also been involved at Olympic, Asian Cup and International levels of the game in a number of roles. “I love bringing through our younger players, they are the future of the game” he said. He is skilled in making all the behind the scenes details happen and we know he will be of great benefit to our players and our other coaches. His expertise will
be invaluable and as a club it’s really important we develop our coaches, just like we do with players. Soccer training for our senior men is starting on Wednesday 18 January at 6.30pm at the club. Our Senior Women will also be at the club on the 18th from 6pm. The club is also expecting a record number of players to sign up this year. The competition is open to players aged 5 and up. In some political contests, outcomes and reasons are hard to define When punter and pundit see the contest go down to the line These pundits perceive themselves to be the elite Casting pearls before swine, at the punters feet Secure within the straight jacket of the politically correct The mood of these mere mortals the elites fail to detect Such mortals are the hardened punters of life’s gruelling race They are still in this contest, competing at a much lesser pace Some in life have played hard, they have lived, loved and lost In their pursuits, taken their chance and now count the cost Others have toed the line, obeyed the rules and stayed safe Played the game, stood their ground and kept the faith In debate they state that they know what they know They look you in the face state their case, then, they up and go They won the Brexit in the UK Voted for Trump in the USA They are the backbone which forms a strong society Penned by the pundits as the “Silent majority” Their opinions are seldom debated or aired Being criticised by others as bordering on the absurd] So when they spoke in words of their own These words were as seeds that failed to be sown But not so when such words were spoken in communion With good neighbours, friends and like minds in union Such is the support now given to each word That which once was silenced is now heard Punters like pundits could now have their say When the day was done each dog could now have its day Then came the time to select their choice To make their mark and speak with one voice A strong turnout was noted on that day When they cast their vote and went on their way Each election outcome caused a stir and surprise Sadness and confusion clouded the pundit’s eye Then like their opinions, the pundits just faded away After the votes were counted on Election day.
I refer to your recent request in your paper regarding how these changes affect us as Aged Pensioners. Here is my story. I have recently written to all the major parties expressing my disappointment with these changes. To date, I have only received a reply from the Australian Labor Party who incidentally did not vote for this legislation. It was passed by help from the Greens cutting a deal with the Government. The content of my communication to the political parties is as follows: I have been advised recently by Centrelink of a reduction of $10.50 per week in my part Aged Pension, ($546 per annum). I own my own modest home and I have a small amount of superannuation, from which I draw the minimum income stream amount to top up my part Aged Pension. In “Superannuation” speak, I live a modest lifestyle, I earn less than $30,000 per year and as I am a widow, only receive a Single Aged Pension as part of this total yearly income. I think it is grossly unfair to have to cop a reduction in my Aged Pension. I am 67, not wealthy, and have some health issues. I drive a 2005 motor car. As a widow with no handy man, I have to pay out to contractors/ tradesmen to get work done to maintain my home and vehicle, tasks that I am unable to do for myself. I think most single pensioners would agree that is costs almost as much to run a home on a single pension, as it does for a married couple with joint pension payments. The only savings made are on food, water and power, and they are minimal. I have recently downsized my house to try and stay in my home into the future, as well as keep my small nest egg and private health Insurance going, until I turn up my toes! My late husband and I saved and salary sacrificed whilst working to put money away for our modest retirement. My late husband never received any employer-contributed superannuation, as it only came in after he had retired. This must be an issue for a lot of aged pensioners like me. If an employer reduced your salary by $550 a year or more, they would be referred to the Fair Work Commission or have their union go into bat
for them in the Industrial Count. Our Government can do this by legislation and we have no come back whatsoever. I understand the Government has to try and repair the budget, but what happened to making wealthy corporations and multinationals pay their fair share of tax? What has happened to Investors with multiple investments homes still receiving the benefits of negative gearing, and our politicians receiving over generous pension schemes, Gold Passes, perks and allowances that aged pensioners can only dream about? I have absolutely no issue with aged pensioners on the Basic Pension receiving an increase. Life can throw some “curved” balls at times and we all have not been able to save for many reasons, for our later years. I do however have a big issue with this LNP Government picking on an easy target, the aged, to recoup money, taking money from the elderly in their later years It is no wonder people are losing trust in our democracy, a good democracy looks after its Older Citizens that have contributed throughout their working lives. We are the generation that paid 16 per cent interest rates, had no child care benefits, received no family payments, no first home owner’s grants. How is this fair? We don’t want to be wealthy; we just want to have enough income to see us through until we fall off the twig. Is that so wrong? This legislation is seriously flawed and needs revising as a matter of urgency. I hope older People never, never, forget this low act of this Government and show their disgust at the next election with their feet. Yours etc Christine, Banksia Beach
Response to aged pension changes #2
In a recent edition, readers were invited to supply details of how they would be affected by current changes to the Age Pension. Put simply, in the case of my wife and myself, our pension will be cut by 65%, which amounts to a reduction of $7200 a year. Throughout our working lives, my wife and I have paid the appropriate rates of income tax, Medicare levy and other taxes. Prior to

Letters to the Editor continued... retirement, we endeavoured to put aside some modest savings to support us in our old age, as all Australians have been encouraged to do. When I retired, aged 65, some 20 years ago, it appeared that our planning had been reasonably successful and that our income from superannuation, savings and the Age Pension would be sufficient to support our modest life style for years to come. With the changes presently being introduced, this will no longer be the case. As a consequence, we shall now have to start drawing upon our capital, thus decreasing our income from savings and increasing our reliance on the Age Pension, which is what we thought national policies were supposed to discourage. Clearly, such changes to the Age Pension rules do little to encourage any saving for retirement and make planning almost impossible. Furthermore, under the new rules, each $1000 in excess of the assets limit reduces the pension by $3 per fortnight or $78 per year. Since, with current interest rates, $1000 in the bank is likely to earn no more than $26 a year, it is apparent that pensioners in this situation would be better off spending their savings and drawing an increased pension. Unfortunately, our elected representatives appear to have very little concern for the thousands of elderly retirees who will be disadvantaged by these changes which they have approved. 'Ficus' tree fracas
Ref: Fight to save our foliage – Bribie Weekly – 23 Dec 2016 - Rachel Lang The article concerns a Bribie resident starting a petition to establish a register of significant trees on Bribie Island and uses a photograph of this resident standing in front of a “ficus” tree allegedly 80 years old on a private property at No. 4 Banya St., Bongaree. Ficus is a genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes etc, some known as “Strangler Fig” with height to 140 + feet. My advice to those persons inclined to sign such petition should first visit the property and view the tree. It has destroyed the surrounding yard. Grass will not grow. I am advised that the roots have caused toilet blockage. The gutters and down pipes fill up with leaves and twigs. I challenge the ethics of the journalist on several grounds, [ETHICS 1&9] viz; (1) Did she interview the owner of the property for balance; (2) does she have any knowledge of botany and the problems this tree causes; (3) would she, the potential petition organizer and Council spokesperson wish to live on a property with such a tree? (4) why publish part of a tree only and not show its total size; (5) why not also print a photograph of the general yard displaying the damage the tree roots have caused; (6) how was the age of the tree established? Dog friendly beach area Bongaree
I would like to put forward for consideration, a proposal for a “Dog Friendly Beach” on the Passage side of Bribie Island, and to be more precise, the very small section of beach directly in front of “Cornetts”, Welsby Parade, Bongaree.
To support this proposal, I would like Council to consider the many elderly people that walk their dogs along the pathway, along the beachfront, on the Passage side of the Island. I would suggest that the vast majority of these people would not be able to access “Red Beach” or even Woorim, to enable their dogs to have a brief swim, especially in this very hot weather. Red Beach is very isolated and not a location that I personally would frequent mid-week, and therefore eliminates an opportunity to allow my dog to have a quick swim if I am unable to get across to Woorim. In speaking with a number of dog owners, that frequent this pathway along the foreshore, we all agree that this very small section of beach, if it were made available to dog owners, for example, between the hours of 5am to 10.00am each day, would be a huge benefit and would be greatly appreciated by many dog owners who, as stated above, have no way of accessing the other dog friendly beach areas. Some dogs love a swim, while many just like a paddle, but especially in the Summer months, most just love a cool off, and a chance to exercise off the lead, in and around the water. Of course, the same rules would apply as in other dog friendly areas, in that if the dog is not properly socialised, then it should NOT be off the lead in this or any other dog friendly area. By far the majority of dog owners who exercise their dogs daily are aware of this. This small section of beach, being directly in front of Cornettts on Welsby Parade, and also directly in front of a carpark, is not a beach that is utilised by most beach goers, because (a) of its limited sand area, and (b) is not directly in front of parkland. However, even if it were, the restricted hours that we are proposing should not pose any problems. This section of beach has steps down to the sand from the path, which will enable the majority of dog owners access to the beach. Also, being directly in front of a carpark, adds to its convenience for some dog owners who have limited mobility. In closing, I again ask that it be kept in mind that this proposal is for a restricted period each day, and allows access to the beach that most elderly and those with limited mobility who have a companion dog, do not currently enjoy. In relation to Issue 6 page 12, the article titled “The Evil Drink” by Razza. I found it unbelievable that you actually published the demeaning comments made in regard to woman. There has been a lot of good work done to advance the role of women being valued for their ability and the important contribution they make to society as a whole. This article depicted an outdated and misogynist views by a person that clearly does not respect women. Whilst your paper shows the disclaimer that “letters to the editor are not necessarily those of the editor or publishers” – the fact that you actually published this article suggests you did not consider that these views may be offensive to some members of the community. Just because a person submits comments does not mean you have to include it.

Ban jetskis from our marine parks
‘Sunshine Coast Daily’, Friday 13 January 2017. OPINION PAUL SETO, Kings Beach | Friday 13th January 2017, at 5:00 am. REGARDING the collision of a jetski and windsurfer story (SC Daily, January 10) whenever a powered craft hits a person or property it is always the fault of the powered craft. As it says on the registration certificate: “You Are the Skipper. You are Responsible.” There is also the overarching responsibility for every skipper at all times to exercise all due care and attention to avoid any marine incident including ‘near-misses’. To try and blame a windsurfer for a collision with a jetski is laughable. The story does not mention what the windsurfer was doing when struck by the jetski. If, as I have seen many times in the BulcockGolden Beach area, the windsurfer was lying in the water trying to haul the sail back into the wind, and then it was struck. Given that, for some bizarre reason, the government allows people to operate a jetski without a licence or any display of competency, up to speeds of 40 knots (about 80kmh) these thrill-seeking hoons are a menace. It comes as a very big surprise to these hirer drivers to discover that jetskis do not have a brake or a rudder. If you are travelling at 80kmh and something unexpected pops up in the water, then you will probably just barrel into it or over it. If the authorities investigating this incident find the jetski operator at fault, then presumably, any penalty and fine are recorded onto that person’s car driver’s licence. Or, does the penalty points and fines apply to the ‘supervising’ operator? Personally, I believe that speeding jetskis have no place in a marine park, especially in confined waterways, and an internationally recognised wild bird-breeding haven such as the Pumicestone Passage. As a member of the growing band of quiet and gentle water craft users, and given all the new ‘blow-ins’ set to arrive in Caloundra South with jetskis, I know I would prefer to see 500 dugongs, dolphins, pelicans and all their bird friends on the weekends rather than 500 speeding jetskis endangering and frightening all living beings on and in the water. As a self-funded retiree, I’m frustrated with Canberra’s continuous fiddle with Superannuation contributions and rule changes Plus the measure to Re-balance the Pension Assets Test to be implemented on 1 January 2017. So here’s fair warning to all politicians of any persuasion, this group of aged voters may be about to make the greatest impact on any Federal election in history, ignoring them may be the start of a changed political environment in this country. Change the Entitlements. I absolutely agree, if a pension isn’t an entitlement, neither is theirs. They keep telling us that paying us an aged pension
isn’t sustainable. Paying politicians all the perks they get is even less sustainable! The politicians themselves, in Canberra, brought it up, that the Age of Entitlements is over: The author is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of 20 people on their address list; In turn ask each of those to do likewise. In three days, most people in Australia will have this message. This is one idea that really should be passed around because the rot has to stop somewhere. Proposals to make politicians shoulder their share of the weight now that the Age of Entitlement is over: 1. Scrap political pensions. Politicians can purchase their own retirement plan; just as most other working Australians are expected to do. 2. Retired politicians (past, present & future) participate in Centrelink. A Politician collects a substantial salary while in office but should receive no salary when they’re out of office. Terminated politicians under 70 can go get a job or apply for Centrelink unemployment benefits like ordinary Australians. Terminated politicians over 70 can negotiate with Centrelink like the rest of the Australian people. 3. Funds already allocated to the Politicians’ retirement fund be returned immediately to Consolidated Revenue. This money is to be used to pay down debt they created which they expect us and our grandchildren to repay for them. 4. Politicians will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Politicians pay will rise by the lower of, either the CPI or 3%. 5. Politicians lose their privileged health care system and participate in the same health care system as ordinary Australian people. i.e. Politicians either pay for private cover from their own funds or accept ordinary Medicare. 6. Politicians must equally abide by all laws they impose on the Australian people. 7. All contracts with past and present Politicians men/women are void effective 31/12/16. The Australian people did not agree to provide perks to Politicians, that burden was thrust upon them. Politicians devised all these contracts to benefit themselves. Serving in Parliament is an honour not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so our politicians should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work. If each person contacts a minimum of 20 people, then it will only take three or so days for most Australians to receive the message. Don’t you think it’s time? Please do this if you can. Australia needs our help. By Cheryl Williams With the kids being on holidays it is also good to make them very aware of some of the dangers within our waters that can be mistaken for a friendly swimmer, there have been lots of sightings of stone fish and Blue Line Octopuses is one of three species of the venomous Blue ringed octopus. Stone fish have been sighted at Banksia Beach along the waterfront and the octopuses have been sighted in the Banksia Canals and at Bellara as well near the Bongaree Jetty. So please all be on the lookout for these throughout the passage. We must not also forget that we do have Turtles laying there eggs up along the surf beach. Unfortunately we have those whose continue not to obey the rules of beach driving which is sad for all the people who do the right thing, it is best to drive along the beach at 2hrs before the top of the tide and 2hrs after the top of the tide otherwise this causes drivers to drive on the soft sand and the possibility of driving over the turtle nest destroying the eggs and the nest. We have also had several reports of drivers driving over the sand dunes. Just remember is is illegal to drive in the dune area So I ask if you see any people driving over the sand dunes please take down there registration number and report it to the authorities. If driving and venturing up the beach don’t forget to get a beach permit available from Gateway Bait and Tackle 1383 Bribie Island Rd Ningi Yearly permits are $144.40 plus $3.50 admin fee and $46.25 weekly plus $3.50 admin fee. Whiting and Dart Surfside at Camping sites, 2nd Lagoon and 3rd Lagoon on Preserved Beach Worms. Snapper at the Ripples, Sandstone Point and Bribie Bridge biting on Cuttlefish. Flathead at Ningi Creek on Chicken gut and Mullet Gut. Mackerel are out at the Bird Cage and Surfside near 2nd Lagoon on Pilchards and Slimmeys. Mud crabs up Ningi Creek, Lime Pocket and in the Banksia Canals munching on Mullet. So as we can see lots of good fish being caught about the passage. We have had a lady catch a Flathead near the Bribie Bridge with a length of nearly 1mt and yes she did do the right thing and release it back unharmed we must remember our Legal Size and Limits which you will find on my Tide guides for 2017 which are now available from Gateway Bait and Tackle. Tips from Gateway Bait and Tackle on how to catch Squid Squid are much harder to catch and I have only caught them at night while using a squid light and squid net. A squid light is an LED light that floats on the surface beside the boat.

A dimming switch inside the boat allows you to control the brightness of the light. When you first pull up you run the light as brightly as possible to attract the squid. As the squid come in towards the light you can use the squid net to scoop them up quickly. The dimmer switch comes into play if the squid are staying out of reach of the net. Once you have attracted the squid to the light, slowly dim the light and the squid will come closer until you can reach them.
