Crisis Background Six years since the conflict began in Yemen, its people remain gripped by one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades. Every day almost 20 million people wake up hungry. An estimated 24 million people (80% of the country’s population) are in need of humanitarian aid to survive – a figure so high that it is in fact the highest across the globe.

Tens of thousands of children have died of hunger or diseases that have become widespread. Even newborns barely have a chance to survive, as malnourished mothers are not strong enough to nurse their babies. The severe depreciation of the Yemeni Rial (YER) and closure of key trade routes resulted in steep price increases for food and essential commodities, further deteriorating the food security situation.

Ramadan Food Packs
Eid Gifts for Yemen
With your generosity, we distributed thousands of food packs to those in need and helped to save lives. Each food pack holds an average of 65 pounds of food and contains local staples to help feed each family for around one month. Through this effort, we distribute your Zakat al-Fitr, Fidya and Kaffara payments in the form of food supplies to the poorest of the poor. The food items are purchased through local markets to help the local economy. While the contents vary according to region, local diet customs, and availability, each food pack usually contains items like rice, lentils, oil, sugar, tea, wheat, canned food, and dates.
With your support, we provided Eid gifts in the form of new clothes and shoes to 800 orphans and vulnerable children in the Sana’a Governorate in Yemen. This helped make Eid a little better for them and let them know that someone is thinking about them. BENEFICIARIES

Covid-19 Relief & Isolation Centre Islamic Relief is supporting the operation of an isolation centre equipped with medicine, medical supplies, and medical equipment, while also raising awareness and educating the community to control the spread of Covid-19. This also includes providing urgently needed food to patients. The isolation center is considered to be the largest one in the area serving both Amanat Al Asimah and Sanaa Governorates, and all severe Covid-19 cases are referred there, even if they are from other governorates. The catchment population of Bani Alharith District is approximately 460,000. BENEFICIARIES

WASH, Food Security and Livelihood in Al Dhale’e and Dhamar This response aims to reduce the suffering and maintain the human dignity of people internally displaced, women, men, girls, and boys in the two governorates of Al Dhale’e and Dhamar. This project is focused on rehabilitating 4 water systems that are in need of repair, to improve long term access to clean drinking water. These water systems are upgraded to solar power to minimize negative environmental impacts, and ensure a long term power source. The water piping system is also being extended to ensure accessibility of water stations for women, girls, and people with disabilities, by making them close to houses with adequate privacy and lighting.
Emergency WASH and Livelihood in Sana’a Governorate We further emphasize the importance of minimizing environmental impacts through cleaning campaigns, and waste management awareness sessions in an attempt to reduce pollution. Hygiene kits that include chlorine tablets, soap bars for hand washing, washing powder and water containers, will all be distributed. Meeting immediate food and essential living needs is a priority, we accomplish this through unconditional cash assistance provided to internally displaced persons and host communities. This project focuses in particular on female headed households and people with special needs, as we recognize the barriers they face. Families are also being granted cash-for-work opportunities to construct and repair community assets such as ponds, rural roads and harvesting tanks. BENEFICIARIES

This project is focused in the Al Haymah Ad Dakhiliyah district in the Sana’a governorate. The Sana’a Governorate is amongst the most affected governorates in Yemen due to cholera and water borne diseases. There are nonfunctional and damaged water sources due to the ongoing conflict, which is one of the factors limiting the efforts to control the current cholera outbreak. This project is focused on rehabilitating 3 nonfunctional public water sources in an effort to make them fullyfunctional, and to provide communities with long term access to clean drinking water. To make these water systems more sustainable, the repairs will include components like submersible pumps, drop pipes, drop cable, solar powered operation system, water tank, pumping pipeline, and distribution pipes.
Emergency Food, WASH & Livelihood Assistance in Amran Additionally, this project provides hygiene kits and sessions that raise awareness to create a sustainable change in water sanitation and hygiene. This project also centers the need for livelihood assistance in this district, and does this through providing employment opportunities to over 250 household heads in the form of cash for work activities. These activities are centered on ensuring the well being of the community, by repairing shared community assets, such as roads and ponds. BENEFICIARIES

In the face of the devastating impacts of conflict, famine and health crises, this response is assisting families in dire need in the Amran Governorate. Our teams distributed emergency food baskets to households, as well as farming supplies, tools and training to empower families to grow food and increase food sustainability. The participants of this project are also provided with cash-for-work employment opportunities, and are engaged in creating, rehabilitating or protecting community assets in their areas. The goal is for the participants to be given ownership and maintain the sustainability of the project. Examples of community assets include roads, small bodies of water such as ponds, agricultural terraces, and more.
Orphan Sponsorship
The response also includes rehabilitating two water sources in Amran, by installing a new water pump and a water pump powered by solar system. This is supplemented by the training of a committee of locals who can take over management of these sources, performing routine water quality testing and distributing chlorine tablets, to ensure that the community has access to safe and clean drinking water. The local committees will be responsible for hosting hygiene awareness and learning sessions. Hygiene kits were also distributed in the region to protect against Covid-19. BENEFICIARIES
One of our most effective orphan-focused initiatives in Yemen is our orphan sponsorship program. The Islamic Relief office has a personal relationship with each family whose orphan is sponsored by your donation, and regularly checks in on them to provide support and ensure that their needs are met. This is a process that transforms these families. With your help, each family was able to cover their basic needs with dignity, which means the orphan’s quality of life is increased and they no longer have to worry about just surviving. Once Sumaia reached the Quzan Health Unit, she was admitted and her treatment began. The infant was then transferred to a supplementary feeding program to continue her treatment. After close observation and the necessary healthcare, Sumaia’s health condition has improved significantly. Her mid upper arm circumference, weight and height have all increased and she is now fully recovered.
“I am very thankful to Islamic Relief and their donors for providing such free services. You saved my daughter’s life and many others. Thank you so much,” says Sumaia’s father.
