A world without activity limitation for persons with communication disorders.
Dear friends, While thanking you for your continued patronage, I am pleased to inform that the advisory board of the institute met under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Sri D.H. Shankaramurthy, Chairman of the Legislative Council, Government of Karnataka on 3rd August, 2016. This period also witnessed a number of activities such as Independence Day celebrations, hosting of a national seminar on Rehabilitation of Cochlear Implant Recipients, a Faculty Development Program and starting of the academic sessions for all three postgraduate programs in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. A number of initiatives towards improving and expanding the services of the institute have been taken, thanks to the support of the Management Committee, trustees and the donors. Nevertheless, certain social and environmental conditions such as inaccessible transport facilities and seasonal changes have altered the pace of work, which we hope will get streamlined in the near future. I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Dussera, Happy Diwali and a Merry Christmas, with a fervent appeal to continue your benevolent patronage.

Independence Day at Sunaad School
India’s 70th Independence Day was celebrated with joy and gaiety on 15th August, 2016. Chairman, Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh began the programme by delivering the welcome address. Lion K. Srinivasulu Reddy, President of Lions Club of Bangalore East had kindly consented to preside as Chief Guest for the day. The presence of the trustees greatly encouraged the students to put their best foot forward. The programme included dances, skits and yoga and exhibited national integrity. Lion K. Srinivasulu Reddy distributed prizes to the students for their excellence in various events. The tricolour was then hoisted by him followed by the National Anthem sung by all children with Hearing Impairment of Sunaad School, Staff, Students of Dr.SRCISH, all the dignitaries and invitees. Sweets were distributed.

Azadi 70’ Celebration
As part of Independence Day celebration (Azadi 70’ celebrations), debate competitions were organized for the college students. The debates were moderated by Ms. Daly, Ms. Reeta, Mr. Nitish and Mr. Rinu. The topics given were “Is nonviolence a solution for freedom?” and “Why should Mars be India’s next destination?”. Interesting points were put forth by both the ‘for’ and ‘against’ groups. All the participants were presented gifts for their passionate debating skills.

Ganesh Chathurthi was celebrated on 7th September 2016 by the Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH). There was puja, followed by distribution of sweets, games, music, dance. Visarjan was done on the final day.

Teacher’s Day Celebration
On Monday, the 6th of September, 2016, Teachers’ Day was celebrated in the auditorium by the D.Ed. students. Students of Sunaad School enthralled audience with their performance.
Inauguration of Teacher’s Day celebration at the Institute On the 7th of September, Teacher’s day was celebrated in the Mother’s Training Unit. The children warmed their teachers’ hearts by presenting them with roses. A few children spoke about Sarvapalli Dr. Radhakrishnan, in whose honour the Teachers Day is being observed. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Head of Department of Hearing Studies presided over the function as Chief Guest.

International Deaf Day Celebration
International Deaf Day was celebrated on the 27th Sept., 2016. Posters and charts were made by the students and put up around the Institute. In the sign language unit, a discussion about the status of the Deaf and the problems they face was conducted. The group consisted of 3 Deaf individuals and 3 normal hearing people. Ms. Maria Goretti, sign language coordinator gave a background about World Deaf Day and its significance with respect to the importance of sign language in communication for the Deaf. One of the points put forth by the Deaf individuals was that deafness was an invisible disability, especially for those who do not wear hearing aids. She experienced indifference from the normal hearing community as she was mute and deaf. Furthermore, the Deaf individuals believed that the families only communicate the basic minimum information to them and that conversation was rare. Ms. Prema Lohia, our Deaf instructor felt that there were very few job opportunities for the Deaf, and those employed were either underpaid or not paid at all. She stated that this was due to lack of legal help available for the Deaf. The hearing group felt that Sign language should be made compulsory in schools, a view shared by the Deaf group as well. The discussion blended the ideas of the hearing and the Deaf on the path towards integrating the Deaf community with the normal hearing community. 07 | ISH LINK | October 2016

Staff Outing On the 27th of August, about 40 staff (teaching and non-teaching) went for a fun trip to Guhantara, a resort on Kanakpura Road. There were many exciting games such as Zorbing, Paint Ball, Go Karting, Foosball, Carrom and a dance floor. The trip was a welcome break for the staff.

Professional Development Professor R. Rangasayee, Director (Technical) was invited by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association to be a member of the global panel and talk on International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Implementation at the 30th World Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) in Dublin, Ireland from August 21st to 25th, 2016. The talk was on ‘ Use of ICF in India’. He also spoke about ‘Current International Perspectives in Audiology’. His proposal to conduct a workshop on “Global trends and SLP Education: Research Issues and Need” was accepted by IALP and the same was conducted. He was also invited to speak about Primary Hearing Care in a Round Table Organised by WHO.

Seminar / Workshop / Conference / Product Information / Hands on Training attended by department faculty outside the Institute On the 19th and 20th of August, 2016, an RCI recognized national CRE was organized by the Department of Hearing Studies, titled “Rehabilitation of Cochlear Implant Recipients: Illustrative Case Studies”. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Asha Yathiraj, Professor of Audiology at AIISH. Her inputs brought a fresh outlook towards therapy. The resource persons included Ms. Rashmi Deshpande (Medikeri’s Super Specialty ENT Center), Ms. Janani Jeyaraman, (MedEl India Pvt. Ltd.), Ms. Shabnam Fathima M. (MedEl India Pvt. Ltd.), Ms. Mithila Poonacha (Advanced Bionics India Pvt. Ltd), Dr. Madhuri Gore, Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing and Ms. Geetha C. (Lecturer, AIISH). The highlight of the seminar was a panel discussion, chaired by Mr. Suresh T. The participants included Ms. Ratna Shetty, Ms. Parimala, three cochlear implantees and their parents and issues with respect to their education and day to day difficulties were discussed.

ISKCON conducted a drawing competition for the students on the 16th July, 2016. On 23th July, 2016, Karnataka state council for child welfare conducted inter school painting competition for differently abled children at Sharanya children home, R.T. Nagar. The students participated with great enthusiasm.
This quarter brought visitors to the School to have a feel of its functioning. On 8th August, 2016, Dr. and Mrs. Rahul from the Bhojkumar family visited the school and interacted with the staff and students. On 22nd August, 2016, Mr. Mohan, Dist. Disabled Welfare Officer, Bangalore Urban paid the school a visit. On 10th September, 2016, Kannada film director Manju and actress Kavitha paid a visit to the school.
On the 20th of July, 2016, an inter-house hand writing competition was held. All the students performed exceedingly well. Three from each house were declared winners. On the 31st August, 2016 “Wealth out of Waste� competition was conducted. On 29th July, 2016 Dandu Pradesha Kannada Sangatanegala Okkuta awarded certificates and mementos to students who scored highest marks in the SSLC Kannada exam (2015-16). Likith Kumar (101/125), Mallikarjun (100/125), and Akshay Kumar (98/125) received the certificate and mementos.
Mid-term examinations began on 15th September, 2016. The students had oral and written examinations. On the 28th of September, 2016, students from grade I to X participated with great school in Rangoli competition.

The children attending Mother’s Training Programme came dressed as fruits and vegetables as part of Independence Day celebrations. Their performance was much appreciated by the Chairman, and he presented each of the children with a token of appreciation. On the 30th of August, the children and their mothers visited pottery town to observe and learn about the various materials used for making idols, such as Plaster Of Paris and clay. The children enjoyed the trip and it was a good learning experience for them. In the Mother’s Training Unit, Ganesh Chathurthi was celebrated on the 2nd of September, 2016. Offerings to God, such as Chakli, Modak and Badam puri were prepared and offered to Lord Ganesha. The children with Hearing Impairment learnt about the story of the birth of the God with the elephant head. On the 24th of August, the Mother’s Training Unit celebrated Krishna Jayanthi. Pooja was performed and the story of Lord Krishna’s birth was narrated to all. A fancy dress competition was organized for all the children. The girls came dressed as Gopikas and the boys came dressed as Krishna. Their charming attires were judged by Mr. Suman and Mr. Nitish.

The staff of the Sign Language Unit offered their valuable interpretation services to a patient in the ENT clinic and for two victims of criminal cases. Group sign language classes were conducted for students from Jyoti Nivas College, from July to September, 2016. The group consisted of psychology students and one student from commerce stream. They enjoyed and enthusiastically participated in the Sign language Activities conducted every day. They also learnt the National Anthem in sign language. In addition, they also learn to sign a few words regularly used in day-to-day Psychology practice.

The Sign Language Unit is training two people with hearing impairment in functional English. One of them is being trained for placement. The 1st year Bachelors and students of Diploma in Special Education also began their training in sign language. Ms. Manisha, a freelance journalist interviewed the staff of the unit for an article about the use of sign language in Bengaluru in the Caravan Magazine.
Two students from IISc who require sign language to be incorporated into their project are taking assistance from the unit. In this quarter, 9 students have joined for the functional sign language course. This includes Ms. Kalpana Raghavendar, the famous singer of films and stage in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. She is a resident of Chennai, but has chosen our institute to learn sign language. She aims to teach deaf students in schools and colleges. The unit is also training our audiologist Mr. Sujay Dasgupta in functional sign language. We also had 7 students joining for the Level ‘A’ course. This includes a law student from Delhi who wants to help hearing impaired victims, a student from Mumbai who

Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) On 27th August 2016, Fresher’s Day was conducted for the new batches - 1st year BSc, 1st year M.Sc. and 1st year Diploma. The freshers were welcomed by the other batches with dance, music and games. They showcased their talents by dancing and performed various tasks sportively, bringing a smile on everyone’s face.
The freshers’, being welcomed by their seniors Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, and Teachers Day was celebrated on 20th September 2016 with great enthusiasm among the staffs and students. The students put up a wonderful cultural program comprising of singing and dance, representing the traditional culture of Kerala. The faculty were at their best and did an impromptu ramp walk. There was a game of quiz and a video presentation for all the staffs bringing back flash of memories. The students were awarded for the competitions conducted, such as pookkalam and fashion show, on occasion of Onam. The best pookkalam was awarded to the 1st year Masters batch, 2nd prize to the 2nd year Masters batch and 3rd prize to the 2nd year Bachelors batch. Mr. Onam and Ms. Onam titles were bagged by Mr. Timothy Cherian and Ms. Elan Mariya Babu respectively. The celebrations came to an end with serving of the Kerala special Payasam and a game of tug-of-war for all the staffs and students.

Clinical Facilities
Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies. Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service. Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs. Our experts in the institute effectively carry out this specialised service.
Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.
Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc. Endostroboscopy: The Institute is equipped with state of the art Endostroboscope facility to assess vocal cord vibration patterns, mucosal pliability, study the underlying layered structure of the vocal folds, etc. This accurate diagnostics help the patient to get the most appropriate treatment.
Speech Therapy Services Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing deals with a number of investigatory and treatment protocols related to speech disabilities. With eminent practitioners, it offers treatment and rehabilitative services to many disorders associated with speech. Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible. Stuttering - is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech, sometimes accompanied by struggling behaviors. Cleft lip and Palate - refers to a physical condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth leading to speech disorders. Cerebral Palsy (CP) - reflects a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordinations due to anomaly of the developing brain.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life. Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent. Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing. Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child.
