Glad to share with you some of our exciting activities in this issue. On the occasion of Founder’s day we had the pleasure of honouring our donors and a chance to meet the alumni of the Institute. Additional developments have been in the area of Article 25 of UNCRPD which reiterates Health of Persons with Disabilities. How many of you will consult a doctor who does not understand what you speak and you don’t understand what doctor speaks?!! Funny situation ....but that’s what happens to the 1.5 million Sign Language using Deaf people in India. Gynaecological problem, psychiatric problem, paediatric illness and NCDs are being addressed in our Institute, where we provide free medical consultation and free sign language interpretation as well as gender specific Indian Sign Language Interpreter. Readers please bless us and lead us!! While a minimum of 6,000 ISL interpreters are required just at the rate of one per block, there are hardly 200 of them in the country. To partly mitigate the scarcity of sign language interpreters, we have now introduced Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) Services on demand so that the Deaf people at work, at hospital, in the police stations or in Court of law, facing an interview or even to chat with a hearing friend can avail our services through Skype !!! On 23rd September the Governing Council met and based on which several positive decisions were taken. Recommendations of the Governing Council resulted in the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust approving the initiative to reward prize winning authors at regional, national and international conferences. Celebrations at the Institute Independence Day was celebrated by the children of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired and the children at Com-DEALL with much pomp, ceremony and patriotism. On the occasion of the 69th Independence Day, the flag was hoisted by Lion Janardhan Reddy, President, Lions Club of Bangalore East. The children, teachers and parents participated in the celebrations. Colourful dance performances, enactment of freedom fighters of the country and prizes were distributed during the day.

A Tribute to Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam was an Ironman in real life – a rocket scientist, genius, teacher, ‘People’s president’, ‘Missile Man’, ‘The man behind Vision 2020’ & a visionary himself. Kalam lived as a frugal, vegetarian teetotaler and called himself “a brahmachari President”. From distributing newspapers after school, he overcame all odds and pursued physics and aerospace engineering on a scholarship. Working for DRDO and ISRO, to becoming the President of India, his story is inspiring. Awarded the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna – highest civilian honours India could offer, he truly remained humble. Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam made every day of his life count for all it’s worth, till the very last breath he took. Kalam Sir, 83, passed away on 27 July 2015, suffering from a cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. He was buried with 21 gun salute full state honours in his hometown of Rameshwaram. He once noted that “One is blessed if one can die working, standing tall without any long drawn ailing. Goodbyes should be short, really short’,” he had said. Kalam once answered the question “What will you like to be remembered for - President, Scientist, Writer, Missile man, India 2020.….?”, He had said “Teacher”. This great teacher will always be remembered, respected and continue to inspire the nation.

The Chairman was felicitated by the trustees of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, staff, faculty and students. We take this opportunity to congratulate and further wish our Chairman all the best in all his future endeavours.

Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired Awarded for 100% Pass Results
The children of Sunaad School achieved 100% results in the annual SSLC exams. In recognition of this achievement, the Bangalore Education Officer, Sri. Ramesh presented an award to Mrs. Padma Prabha, the Principal of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired, in recognition of the success of the students, their teachers and parents.

Doctor for Sound Related Control In Safe Hearing (Dr. SRCISH) – won IEEE Award A project proposal, under the guidance of Prof. R. Rangasayee, titled ‘Doctor for Sound Related Control In Safe Hearing (Dr. SRCISH)’ was submitted to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) workshop held on July 25th, 2015 at the Institute. This project was judged to be the second best project at the IEEE workshop and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.15,000/-. The personnel involved were Ms. Vaishnavi and Mr. Suman from the department of Hearing Studies, Mr. Ritwik from the sign language department and Mr. Devraj from hearing aid repair unit.

‘Traumatic Brain Injury: A Multidisciplinary Approach’
A two day - RCI – CRE recognized conference on ‘Traumatic Brain Injury: A multidisciplinary approach’ was conducted by the Department of Speech and Language Studies on the 10th & 11th September 2015. The chief guest for the inaugural function was Prof. Dr. V.M. Katoch, Former Secretary, Health Research and Director General, ICMR, New Delhi. The key note speaker for the same day was Dr. G. Gururaj, Professor and HOD, Epidemiology, NIMHANS. The conference included the participation of several resource speakers from multiple disciplines such as Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology, Audiology, Speech Language Pathology, Physiotherapy and Psychology. Resource speakers for the conference are Dr. Rajalakshmi, Dr. N.C. Prakash, Dr. N. Shivashankar, Dr. Lakshmi Venkatesh, Prof. R. Rangasayee, Dr. Jamuna Rajeshwaran, Ms. Smita Caren Mathias, Dr. Na’eem Sadiq, Mrs. Madhavi Tambay, Ms. Annamma George, Mrs. Sherin George and Ms. Jwala Narayanan.

Refreshments and lunch were sponsored by Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Meenakshi ENT Speciality Centre and Vaibhav Speech and Hearing Centre.

Enabling Ability in Disability through Standards and Technology Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in collaboration with the Institute conducted a Workshop titled “Enabling Ability in Disability through Standards and Technology” on 25th July 2015. The workshop was an effort at bringing together professionals from two diverse fields i.e., the engineers working with technology and professionals working with the special needs population. International Day of the Deaf
On the occasion of International day of the Deaf on September 27th, 2015 Sri K.S. Rajanna (Karnataka State Commissioner for Persons with Disability) and Sri Chandramouli K.S. (Senior deaf person and Civilian Sr. Store Superintendent, Indian Air Force) were the Guests of Honour. Video Remote Interpreting services and Sign language supported free medical consulting for deaf signers were two pioneering services launched that will benefit all deaf persons. The sign language users expressed their urgent need for such a facility to increase their independence and conveyed their appreciation (details on Page 14).
Alumni Sharing their Knowledge On July 7th 2015 guest lecture was given by our alumni Dr. Sudhin K. (Asst. Prof., Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University) to the students of III BSLPA regarding clinical skills, expertise and knowledge required for students. It was pleasure having our alumnus reach out to the students. An orientation to staff on ‘Student evaluation in academic settings’ was given by Mr. Gagan Bajaj (Assistant Professor, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University).

Innovative Initiatives at Dr. SRCISH
Auditory Verbal Therapy:
Before speaking words or knowing the meaning of words, babies first hear sounds frequently and memorize them. This normal development will not take place in children with hearing impairment. Children who are early identified and fitted with hearing aids/cochlear implants along with regular therapy will develop speech and language on par with their hearing peers. Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) is an early intervention approach for children who are hard of hearing and their families. The primary goal of AVT is to guide parents in helping their children develop intelligible spoken language through listening and to coach parents in advocating for children’s inclusion in mainstream schools. Auditory Verbal International (1991) highlights auditory-verbal philosophy that supports the basic human right that children with all degrees of hearing loss deserve an opportunity to develop the ability to listen and to use verbal communication in their daily lives. 12 | ISH LINK | October 2015
Doctor for Sound Related Control In Safe Hearing (Dr. SRCISH) at the IEEE Workshop – Enabling Ability in Disability through Standards and Technology A project proposal, under the guidance of Professor R Rangasayee, titled Doctor for Sound Related Control In Safe Hearing (Dr. SRCISH) was submitted to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) conference workshop held on July 25th, 2015 at the Institute. It involved creating a mannequin (christened “Karna”) in whose ear a microphone was placed at that level, where the ear drum would be in a human ear. This microphone was connected to a sound level meter. Consequently, when a earphone of a personal music system is placed in that ear, the sound level meter will show the intensity of music being played, at the level of the eardrum. The motive for creating this unit was primarily for creating awareness among the masses about the permanent harmful effects of listening to loud music through earphones leading to what is called as ‘MP3 deafness’. WHO-ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Explored on 1st October, 2015 in Geneva, possible Mechanisms and Technology to reduce exposure to unsafe sound levels during recreational listening. Creation of “Karna” by Dr. SRCISH is an effort towards this end.
Mobile Speech and Hearing Outreach Bus
With the aim of reaching out to the underprivileged and those who are unaware/unable to reach the facilities of the Institute, the Mobile Speech and Hearing Bus has been launched with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore East. The mobile outreach bus is offering comprehensive audiological evaluation, treatment and consultation services for people with speech and hearing impairments. The bus comes with many features including a sound treated room, GSI -61 audiometer and middle ear analyser. Of the 1.2 million children born in Karnataka every year, less than 10 percent are born in corporate hospitals with facilities for hearing screening and intervention. Over 1,200 children are born with significant hearing impairment in the state annually. Therefore this project has been launched with the objective of providing preventive healthcare through hearing screening and early intervention services for the rural and urban children. The services of the mobile speech and hearing clinic can be availed by elders as well. The mobile bus has reached out to senior citizens at many old age homes across Bangalore. Occasions add a mixture of feeling like joy, excitement, thoughtfulness, etc to every individual. And so did they bring excitement and joy in the hearts of the students of ISH. There were celebrations conducted by the student association of ISH like onam, teacher’s day, fresher’s day and Ganesh chaturthi. Onam which is an exclusive festival celebrated by the Keralites was celebrated on 28/8/2015.The students performed the famous dance called ‘Tiruvadirakali” and a song for the arrival of maveli, to highlight the importance of the celebration.
Magic show captivating the audience during Teachers day program The students performed a dance and beautiful songs were sung to tune the melody of music on the special occasion to exhibit the respect and reverence that was built towards the teachers. Lastly there were games arranged for the teachers to actively participate which encouraged the students for their effort for making the day special for them. Fresher’s day was conducted on 12/9/2015, a day to interact and to know more about their achievements and interests with the newly arrived young students, to be professionals. The day began with a thrilling dance performance by students of 2nd BSLPA. It was followed by the introduction of the students of 1st BSLPA with crazy cartoon characters and other well known funny characters. They were expected to introduce themselves informally by putting themselves in the place of the character. First part of the day ended with the dance, performed by the senior BSLPA and MSLPA students.

They were the promising young group to keep the integrity and unique nature of Kerala alive among the town of this busy garden city. The most important day to acknowledge all the teachers who added an excitement to the journey in ISH, The Teacher’s day was celebrated on 4/9/2015. The teachers were acknowledged by the president of SASH with a sense of gratitude for their tremendous and never ending hard work to mould them into responsible professionals.
Before starting with the second half of the day, a delicious lunch for all the students was provided, to keep up with the same energy. It was time for the 1st MASLP students to introduce themselves. They were give a theme “bollywood” and they had to dress up accordingly as different actors and actresses. The entire introduction was a way to know more about the students and to get more social with them. At 4:00pm the dance floor was set by the members of SASH to end the day with the same energy. The dance floor was a thrilling experience for the students especially for the newly arrived group. This set the evening to be bright and energetic for everyone present throughout the day. On 17/9/2015 the festival of Lord Ganesha was celebrated. The ‘stapana’ of the idol was conducted as a ceremony along with the Pooja. The day began by giving prasada to all the students present with due reverence and respect, and to receive the blessing of the Lord on the special day. Energetic games like musical chair for all the students were conducted.

On 18/9/2015 and 19/9/2015 the pooja was conducted to receive the blessing for the day. The energy was reserved for the entire day and the pooja was conducted in the evening followed by games like ‘breaking of the mattka’. This was followed by energetic dances by all the students.

Mrs. Ratna Shetty started her journey at Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing in 2007 and has been heading the Mothers Training Centre at the Institute. This mother of a child with hearing impairment is a living example of the proverb ‘where there is a will, there is a way’. Mrs. Ratna Shetty recalls and shares with us her experience of raising a child with hearing impairment. “Bharat was born in 1983 and was an active baby, growing with normal motor developmental milestones, except his speech. We suspected that his hearing sensitivity was reduced when he was just one year old. Immediately we took him to Manipal for a hearing check-up. There they confirmed that Bharat has a hearing loss but asked us to wait till he becomes two and a half years as the young child might spoil the hearing aid. Still we were not satisfied with the suggestion and next week, we got him tested in Mangalore at Father Muller hospital. There also we were given the same result but were advised to have hearing aid fitting done as early as possible. We were counselled as to how to talk to the child as we were unable to attend therapy daily due to the distance. There the waiting period was nearly three months for buying the hearing aid. But we were very impatient to wait as we clearly understood that the child cannot learn to talk without hearing the sounds and language/speech of the external environment. After this we visited All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysore and got him tested and bought a hearing aid (Novex Power Master) with V cord. Though we were able to buy the hearing aid, the waiting period to get the mould was nearly four months. So we tried to make him wear the hearing aid with ear-tips. All our family members used to hold the receivers and used to talk and play with Bharat, to draw his attention to the sounds of the world. Recalling these memories now makes me realise how difficult and challenging those years of Bharat’s life was. In spite of all the hardships, my son started responding to environmental sounds, name calls and learnt to tell ‘yaae’ (leaf - yalle), ‘empu’ (red - kempu). But as a mother, I was very worried about the pace of progress and finally we decided to shift to Mysore so that he gets continuous therapy. Thus we started therapy at AIISH in 1985, September. Luckily I met Dr. Prathiba Karanth and she introduced me to Wing. Comdr. K.K. Srinivasan. He and his wife,
Mrs. Ratna Srinivasan explained about the difficulties deaf children face in learning speech and language. After two hours of discussions we fully understood the importance and role of the parents especially the mother in raising the deaf child. After two and a half years of training (when his age was four years) my son started reading Amar Chithra Kathas and other story books, newspapers, etc. So when he was five plus, we were in a dilemma whether to enrol him in a regular school or still continue the training. Mr. Srinivasan said ‘I will test him’. He asked my son ‘Bharat do you know Ramayana?’ He said ‘yes’. Then Mr. Srinivasan asked ‘Why Ravana did not cut Sita’s nose and ears even though she did not agree to marry him?’ I was very scared that my son might not know the answer as I myself did not know the answer. But surprisingly my son answered ‘Mamma, Ravana was very optimistic. He was hoping that one day, Sita would agree to marry him and so he did not want to deform her.’ Hearing his answer Mr. Srinivasan immediately gave his consent to admit him in the regular school. As per his advice we enrolled him in a Kannada medium school. But Mr. Srinivasan advised me to also teach him English. For this I attended spoken English classes and started teaching Bharat English at the age of 8 years. In 5th standard he joined an English medium school, and thereafter there has been no looking back. He graduated with an engineering degree and got selected by IBM. He went on to do his post-graduation at University of Florida, United States. He is presently consulting as a platform engineer in a start-up company. I am now heading the Mothers Training Centre at the Institute as well as holding the responsibility of guiding parents at the ‘Parents Association of Deaf Children, Mysore’. I started this journey with no formal education in this area but now I have completed my Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired) hearing at the Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing. I’m very grateful to Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar for giving me an opportunity to share my experience with the needy parents of deaf Children here in the institute. In conclusion I want to emphasize to all other parents of children with hearing impairment that you must start training your child early and in the right way. This way our children will have equal opportunity and are capable of competing with all the normal hearing children.”

Frame Work for Technology Development The framework for development of technology may be seen in any one or combination of perspectives, as given below: 1. A wide gap exists between the UN declarations, Conventions and Reports vis a vis the programmatic systems that exist in the country. For eg., the training courses in disability sectors do not address the UNCRPD or ICF framework, or MDG as driving fundas of such program. Similarly, the health delivery system does not address the technology required to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The World Report on Disability (2011) for eg points out that 7.5 % of non disabled population and 18.5 % of Disabled population do not access primary health care services due to inadequate instruments. While addressing the problems of 7.5% of the non disabled population is the concern of someone else, it’s our concern to reduce the 18.5% to 7.5%. 2. Be that as it may, the government’s commitment to create barrier free, rights based, inclusive society as declared by BMF is a strong guiding force. 3. The essential action points on UNCRPD and the related needs for technology development such as for promoting Independent Living to make rights real need to be addressed. 4. India as one of the selected countries of the world where (3%) reservation exists in education and employment for Persons with Disabilities calls for Universal Design based technologies for education, training (including towards PM’s Skill Development Program), and in production of machineries used in Factories, Workshops and Industries.
5. Creation of accessible transport, housing, communication devices, health accessories (for eg., a thermometer or glucometer that can be used by a person with blindness or cerebral palsy - in other words a talking glucometer or thermometer with a larger handle as an accessory to be used by persons with limited dexterity). 6. Development of technologies such as those that address the domains / constructs of International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF, 2001) that includes, restoration of Body Functions and Structures, Activity Limitations, Participation Restrictions, Environmental Facilitators and highlight technologies for resolving personal factors 7. Any such development should be based on affordability and accessibility since we tend to be influenced by products and developments made in countries with different socio-economic ethos. (For eg., the audiological test chambers in the present form are the biggest bane in reaching rural India. Why not evolve Active Noise Cancellation tech based headphones or adapt space suit technology for making make shift hearing testing rooms!! The cloth produced by Agra based company for indigenous Parachutes can even act as the walls of the sound treated room!!!). Come!!! Alumni Meet The Alumni Meet was organized to bring together the alumni of the Institution from the year 1985 (PG Diploma in Special Education) and 1993 (Bachelors in Speech & Hearing). The Guest of Honour was Mrs. Anakhi Ghosh of the first batch of Bachelors in Speech & Hearing. The Alumni Meet ended with a proposal to form an association.
