We have opened 2 new specialized clinics: The Vestibular & Balance Clinic and the Post-Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic. We are looking forward to patients benefiting from having multiple facilities under one roof. I am proud to announce that we have started using Vital Stim in our Dysphagia Clinic, we are the only training institute in India with this facility. The Dept. of Hearing Studies conducted a 3-day conference on “New Frontiers in New Audiology”. Congratulations to Dr. Rashmi Bhat and her team for making it a great success! New admissions in to the 3 masters programmes are complete and classes are underway.

Professional Development National Seminar on NEW FRONTIERS IN AUDIOLOGY A three-day Seminar was conducted by department of Hearing studies, from 27th-29th September, 2018 at Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore. The purpose was to highlight the recent trends in field of audiology “NEW FRONTIERS IN AUDIOLOGY”. The conference was attended by a total of 174 delegates; they included 32 professionals from within the institute and sister institutes and the remaining were PG and III year BASLP students. The inaugural function was graced by Dr. K. Balaveera Reddy and Dr. Sundar Raj Urs. The conference focused on different topics of interest. The first day began with a key note by Dr. M.N. Nagaraja on “Audiology: now and then”. This,note incorporated improvements from Puretone Audiometry to Auditory Evoked Potential testing. Further, a talk was delivered by Dr. Heramba Ganapathy on the topic “High Risk Factors of Hearing Loss in infants”. This provoked the need to focus on risk factors like consanguinity, and infections like Measles, Rubella, and Mumps. “Identification of Origin and Source of Endogenous Potentials” was discussed by Dr. Hari Prakash. Potentials such as MNN and P300 & its source generators were discussed. Similarly, Dr. Ganapathy M.K. promoted the concept of “Acoustic Change Complex” and how this test surpasses ABR testing by estimating threshold within 5dBHL of the behavioral threshold. Next, “Role of Auditory and Cognitive Factors in 04

Professional Development Auditory Perceptual Training was discussed by Dr. Usha Shastri. The notion of speech perception in native and non-native speakers using P300, use of Operation Span and Reading Span in Working Memory was the focus. The second day started with a lecture by Mr. Prashasthi Poovaiah on the topic “Rate Induced Facilitation”. The need to assess temporal integration on a routine basis was emphasized. Dr. Aravind Kumar shed light on “Differential Diagnosis using VEMP”. The interpretation of VEMP testing and its use in differential diagnosis of central and peripheral lesions were highlighted. The topic “Use of FFR in diagnostics” was talked about by Dr. Sandeep Maruthy. The essentials of FFR in clinics and future research were discussed. In addition, “Data Logging in HA & importance in rehabilitation” was highlighted by Mr. Nagarjun V. This focused on the use of data logging in counseling patients with HA usage. Later, “Identifying Cerebellopontine Angle Tumors” was talked about by Dr. Prem G. Nair. This topic focused on DDT being a superior test in diagnosis of CPA tumors. Mr. Suresh T. delivered a talk on “Head impulse Test”. The administration and interpretation of the test was discussed. Lastly, Dr. Srinivas widened the horizon
towards vestibular system through the topic “Clinicians Perspective to vertigo”. The final day incorporated “Use of Ling’s method in rehabilitation of individuals with hearing impairment” by Dr. Madhuri Gore. The step wise use of Ling method in rehabilitation was pointed out. This session was complimented by Dr. Asha Yathiraj with the topic “Training Children with (C)APD. A holistic view was discussed requiring respective usage of tests to label the disorder. Next, “Tinnitus Assessment and Rehabilitation” was discussed by Dr. Sreeraj Konadath. Pathogenesis, assessment and rehabilitation of tinnitus were highlighted. Further, “Hearing Aid Fitting techniques in ANSD” were cited by Dr. Prashanth Prabhu. Insights into the best techniques were discussed such as low cut amplification, etc. Lastly, Dr. Hemanth Shetty delivered a talk on “Acceptable Noise Level” and its use in Hearing Aid fitting. The three-day conference was a success, tapping multiple important areas in Audiology and its advancements. This productive conference was conducted through efforts of HOD of Hearing Studies Dr. Rashmi J Bhat and her team.

Dr. A.K. Sinha, Director, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Mumbai addressed staff and students of Dr. SRCISH on the 4th of July, 2018. The topic he elaborated on included Cochlea Implant, Assistance to Disabled Persons (ADIPs), and Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act. Dr. Ayasakanta Rout, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director, Hearing Aid Research Laboratory, James Madison University discussed listening effort in hearing and users and whether there is evidence for fitting premium level over mid level hearing aids. This lecture was conducted on 13th July, 2018.

Dr. Sreesha Malayil, renowned scientist from IISc, Bangalore, addressed staff and students on 26th July, 2018. She enlightened the audience on “Food Waste and Biodegradable Waste Treatment through Anaerobic Digestion.” This talk, organized through efforts of the Environment Committee, brought to the forefront an issue of high concern in today’s world and encouraged listeners to move towards sustainable waste treatment.

New Beginnings Two clinics were inaugurated on 17th Sept., 2018 by the Chairman. The Balance and Vestibular Clinic and the Post-Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic. The clients requiring these clinical services have been redirected for further detailed evaluations and rehabilitation from different departments of the institute. News from College Office New Admissions: A total of 39 new students have been admitted into the Masters Programme in this academic year; 19 students have enrolled in MASLP, 11 in M.Sc. (Speech), and 9 in M.Sc. (Audiology). Results:
We are happy to announce that we have obtained cent percent results for the IV Semester MASLP, IV Semester M.Sc. (Audiology), IV Semester MASLP, and II Semester MASLP batches of the academic year 2017-18. For the II Semester M.Sc. (Audiology) and the IV Semester M.Sc. (Speech Language Pathology) batches, the pass percentage was 90 and 81 respectively.
Updates from Dysphagia Clinic The Dysphagia Clinic at Dr. S.R.Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing was started in the month of June 2018 with the aim of getting safe and efficient swallow in individuals who have difficulty with swallowing. The difficulties in swallowing can be frequent cough during meal times, inability to swallow hard food items, inability to chew food well, saliva dripping out of the mouth whenever there is food in the mouth or otherwise as well (drooling), pain while swallowing, longer time to swallow one spoonful of food etc. This can occur due to neurological problems, like stroke and vocal fold palsy or due to impairment in oral cavity structures like removal of a part of mandible or tongue, as part of surgical treatment of oral cancer or road traffic accidents, dental anomalies etc. The ability to swallow is a necessary factor for survival of an individual. We, at the Dysphagia Clinic are keen on helping individuals regain this swallowing ability. As a gesture of gratitude, one of our therapy clients, Mr. Y. Subramaniam, generously sponsored Vital Stim Plus for our clinic. The Vital Stim Plus is an innovative practice developed by Chattanooga group from DJO global which aims in providing neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the oral and laryngeal muscles that play role in the process of swallowing. The electrical stimulation can improve
the client’s sensation of the muscles that need to be more active. The electrical pulses are able to target sensory and motor muscles separately with the help of change in signal characteristics, such as frequency and phase duration of each electrical impulse. More than this, the Vital Stim Plus can be used to provide biofeedback to the patient regarding the process of swallowing. This instrument use demands for a trained speech and swallowing therapist who is well versed with use of instrument and certified to use Vital Stim. The Vital Stim Plus was procured on 11th June 2018, and 2 speech and swallowing therapists, Dr. B.S. Premalatha and Ms. Mereen Rose Babu, were trained and certified for Vital Stim usage at Dr.SRCISH. We are the only speech and hearing institute in Bangalore which is equipped with this facility of neuromuscular electrical stimulation. At present, we have 3 patients who are benefitting from use of Vital Stim at our Dysphagia Clinic. However, neuromuscular electrical stimulation is not sufficient to achieve improvement. We have to incorporate the exercises that help in swallowing along with Vital Stim. These exercises have to be practiced well by the client. The role of the patient is crucial in bringing improvement in his own process of swallowing.

Updates from B.N. Gupta Research Centre The B.N. Gupta Research Centre (BNGRC) started functioning with a team of three in August 2018. Mr Suresh T., Associate Prof. and Research coordinator, Mrs. Bhuvaneswari B., Assistant Professor and Ms. Anu Babu, Biostatistician and Assistant Professor were the team members. Mrs. Srividya A., Asst. Professor joined the team in September, 2018. Within two months the team has compiled and completed three project proposals and submitted them for review and funding (two of which were sent to the *Department of Science and Technology (DST) - SEED / TIDE division and one to Vodafone Inc. CSR division). The projects submitted are: 1. Development of an integrated (holistic) rehabilitation model for persons with neurogenic and post stroke communication disorders.* 2. Projects which are in the pipeline are:
• A comparative study of scholastic achievement in children with hearing impairment – preschool or mother’s training trained versus not trained • Cognitive Profiling of Children and Adolescents in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). • Infant screening program - Utility of the existing protocols. • A comparative study of communicative abilities in children who hearing aid users versus cochlear implant users. • A retrospective review of data on the behaviour of children with developmental disabilities using a developmental adaptation of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The BNGRC department interacts with the clinical and teaching staff of Dr.SRCISH to come up with more innovative and clinical application-based projects. It also organizes research activities, and discussion sessions with master’s students to create interest towards research, understand correct research methods, and improve writing and research skills, under the initiative called “Writers’ Lab”. The Biostatistician Ms. Anu Babu has been regularly interacting with M.Sc. students regarding research and statistics for dissertation, for Journal Clubs (JC) and with the PhD students for their research and statistics on an appointment basis. The department is looking forward to the projects receiving funding and to the newly operative clinics being useful to both clinicians and patients.

Updates from Sunaad School This has been an eventful quarter for Sunaad School. Functioning of the school and students performance were regulated by conducting parent and teacher meetings. Teachers Meeting was held on 10.7.18; Mrs. Manasa Devi, Mrs. Padamaprabha and Mr. Muniraju conducted it to update the functioning of school work. On 21.07.18, a parent meeting was conducted for classes 8th to 10th. Mrs. Rashmi Bhat, Vice Principal, Mrs. Padma Prabha, H.M., Sunaad School addressed the gathering, Mrs. Rashmi Bhat spoke to parents about how to use hearing aids to the fullest.
Healthy competition an important part of student development; and the students of Sunaad School had many opportunities for this. An inter-house drawing competition was held on 19.07.18 and all the students from pre-school to Std. X participated and displayed their artistic skills. Their work was judged and 1st and 2nd prizes were awarded. On account of Krishna Janmashtami, the universal Sanatana Dharma organized a drawing competition and Sunaad School children participated enthusiastically; Suresh of Std. 6 bagged the 1st prize.

Updates from Sunaad School Celebration and festivals keep up our spirits! On August 15th Independence Day was celebrated with fervor by the staff and students of Sunaad School. As has been the practice over the years, our partners, the Lion’s Club of Bangalore East took pride in participating with the school children. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust welcomed the gathering and gave the presidential address in which he spoke about the role of the students in upholding the growth of the nation. Lion Sukesh Reddy, President of Bangalore East Lions Club, as the Chief Guest, hoisted the National Flag. The National Anthem was followed by a speech by the Chief Guest. Prizes for children’s academic and co-curricular accomplishments were distributed. Lion V.S. Shanthavadhan, Hon. Treasurer of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, CA.DL Suresh Babu, Hon. Secretary of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, participated in the celebration. A variety of cultural programmes were organized by the students. The day ended with a vote of thanks and distribution of sweets. Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata was celebrated on 14.09.18; the significance of festival was explained and prasadam was distributed to all children.

Inauguration of ICT Class Rooms Teachers Day was celebrated on 5th September.
On 24.08.18 “Information & Communications Technology Class Rooms� were inaugurated; Mrs. Padmaprabha welcomed the gathering, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust introduced the Chief Guest, Mr. P.R. Devaraj, Senior Vice President, Cognizant. The Chief Guest inaugurated the Smart Board sponsored by Cognizant and gave a speech. Dr. Shankar Subbaiah, Director, Cognizant, was the Guest of Honour. A variety of cultural programmes were organized by the students; the programme ended with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Sujaya.

Updates From Sign Language Unit In July, Nirit Kremer from Israel (who works with New Acropolis, South India) visited us to learn about Indian Sign Language. She spoke about the various strategies Israel employs adapt to detect deafness, early intervention, and the various skills taught to the Deaf. We also had 2 people joining the Grade II sign language course. These are the students who had completed Grade I and wanted to improve their skills for teaching sign language and interpretation. We had two teachers from a reputed Deaf school take the Grade I interpreter course after their school hours. Their commitment to teaching the children in ISL and helping the Deaf students was commendable. We had a student of Grade I sign language who is working in a company. 9 students pursuing their Diploma in special education in the institute continued their training in sign language course. One Deaf Student who completed his Diploma from JSS, Mysore joined the Functional English course. The new BASLP students have also begun their training in ISL. The training of Jyoti Nivas College students was also in progress. In the month of August, we had one student with hearing impairment enroll and complete the Functional sign language course. We had one MSW Post graduate who joined for Grade I SL classes. We celebrated World Sign Language Day and World Deaf Day on the 28th of September. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sreeram, a mentor for the deaf and a free lance photographer. We invited both Deaf and the hearing for a discussion on the problems of teaching Indian sign language to Deaf children and importance of training children young. We discussed the problems the Deaf face on a daily basis. We had an entertainment programme with skits in Indian sign language by our Grade II students under the direction of Ms. Prema Lohia, our SL instructor. It concluded with a song in Indian Sign Language by Ms. Prema Lohia, our SL instructor and Grade II students. We concluded our Sign Language training program for Jyothi Nivas college psychology students with the sign language exam. We heartily look forward to this Group sign language training every year. The enthusiasm of students is always very contagious and motivating for us. The students also visited the institute to understand the facilities available here. 18

Mother’s Training Center The mothers training centre was full of activity this quarter. Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervor on Wednesday, 15th August 2018 in the school premises. A fancy dress competition was held to celebrate Sri Krishna Janmashtami; Dr. Madhuri Gore, Principal Dr.SRCISH handed over prizes for the event.
Radhakrishna’s photo was garlanded and all the children offered a floral tribute to the great teacher. As usual, children were taken to Pottery Town to see the making of Ganesha idol; the children keenly observed the steps involved in making of Ganesha idols. On 11.09.18 the Ganesha festival was celebrated traditionally; Dr. Rashmi Bhat participated in the festival.
On Teachers’ Day, the children came to class with great enthusiasm to wish their teachers. Children wished their teachers and sought their blessing. Dr. Sarvapalli

On 18.08.2108, staff of the Psychology Unit conducted a camp for psychological assessment of the children of St. Mary’s Public school.
Independence Day was celebrated by students of the NIOS and ASD schools.
On 31st July 2018, NIOS students were taken on an Educational tour to Kumaradhara Farm House. It was an enjoyable learning experience for all. On 5th September, 2018, the students of NIOS and the ASD Schools celebrated Teachers’ Day.

SASH Corner The Students association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) conducted a number of events in this quarter. The first was Fresher’s Day 2018 on 01/09/2018! We had a fun-filled day set for the new 1st year BASLP and 1st year M.Sc. students to officially welcome them to the college. We conducted several games for our new friends; they played dress-up while we became witnesses to some funny characters from our everyday lives. The day ended with an amazing jam session. We hope it was a day to remember for our new friends! We conducted our Teachers Day Celebrations and Onam celebrations on the 6th of September. It was a day to thank
our dear teachers for guiding us, inspiring us and for being such wonderful mentors. Our Onam celebrations were also conducted on the same day for which everyone dressed in the traditional Kerala attire. A generous sum was collected by the students to help the people who had suffered in the Kerala and Kodagu floods and a heart touching video was played depicting how the recent calamities affected Kerala. Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations took place on 13/09/18 and 14/09/18 ending with water games and finally visarjan (immersion) at Ulsoor Lake conducted on 15/09/18.

I have undergone Dysphagia therapy regularly for 62 sessions, thrice in week from 15th November, 2017 to May 2018. Audiometry: measurement of hearing/measuring sensitivity of hearing Hearing Aid (HA) prescription and Fitting: relates to trial and selection of a hearing aid suitable to the individuals nature and degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: devices, which couple the hearing aids to the ear and are made to fit in the individuals’ ear. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: any problem in the working of the hearing aid can be repaired or worn out parts can be replaced. A hearing aid can also be periodically checked to see if it is functioning properly. Auditory Verbal Therapy: is a specialized type of therapy designed to teach a child to use the hearing provided by a hearing aid or a cochlear implant for understanding speech and learning to talk. Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: rehabilitation for children post cochlear implantation is an accepted part of the implant process. A young child with a cochlear implant and her family require a comprehensive habilitation program to help her utilize the auditory signal and to naturally integrate the various components of communication including listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: refers to the setting of the electrical stimulation limits necessary for the cochlear implant user to “hear” soft and comfortably loud sounds. Since the Cochlear Implant can only process sounds in a very narrow range (6-15 dB), it must be able to compress the natural range of sounds (normal speech is usually between 40-60 dB) into this small band. Noise Measurement: measuring the noise levels in industries and public areas and ascertain that it is within permissible limits and not a hazard to the hearing sensitivities of the people in the environment.

Misarticulation: is a speech defect in which an individual substitute, omit, add or distort the speech sounds as result make the speech unintelligible. Stuttering: stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggling behaviors, such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. Stuttering can make it difficult to communicate with other people, which often affects a person’s quality of life. Cleft lip and Palate: refers to a condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth. Cerebral Palsy (CP): is a term used to describe a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination due to anomaly of the developing brain. Autism: is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior and manifests within the first two years of life. Aphasia: is the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. 34
Dysarthria: is an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability: as aneurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite his having average or higher intelligence. Laryngectomy: is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking. Dysphagia: is a medical condition that causes a person to have problems in swallowing.
Psychology Unit
Developmental assessments are conducted on children to identify children with developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are intended to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of a individuals mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: are tests of general intellectual abilities. They measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disability Assessment: evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. School for children with Autism and Learning Disability, slow learners. Physiotherapy Facilities: Ultrasound, IFT, Wax Therapy. Voice clinic: provides services in the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the voice. Endostroboscopy: It is a quick effective procedure to study the structure and functions of the vocal folds. ENT valuation: Routine evaluation of ear, nose and throat are available from an ENT consultant. School Screening: Service offered to schools for identification of speech, hearing and learning problems in children. Rural screening Camps: Service offered to any health centre, institution, organisation or industry or companies to identify people’s (adults and children) abilities in speech and hearing. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired: Provides primary and middle school education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training: Equips individuals with basic skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level recognized courses in Indian Sign language. National Open School (NIOS): Institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out of school children with special needs. Mothers Training Centre: provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment and provides training for their parents. Placement Cell: for adult deaf and graduating rehabilitation professionals.
