Dear All, Seasons’ Greetings!! Several ambitious projects are on the anvil. Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Research Centre is ready to be inaugurated. A Research Advisory Committee and Research Technical Committee have been constituted, enlisting eminent persons in the Society and discipline. We have received approval from the Government of Karnataka for conducting the PGDAVT course. The process of getting approval of RCI has begun. Hopefully we will join the handful Institutions in India conducting such an intensive course on AVT. I am happy to share that the first client fitted with a free Cochlear Implant under Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust and RBSK Scheme of the Government of Karnataka has reported to us for mapping, tuning, and Auditory Verbal Therapy in September 2017. This is a new Scheme and a new innings in the service of Children with Hearing Impairment. Admissions to all the three Post-Graduate courses are completed and classes are in full swing. Nothing is possible without all your Support, Guidance, and Best wishes. Wishing you a Happy and Pollution-free Diwali & Merry Christmas!

Awards and Accolades Our Chairman, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, was conferred the life time achievement award by the Royal Academy of Global Peace in recognition of his service in the field of speech and hearing, education, and treatment of persons with hearing impairment in the country on 13th August 2017.

We say a fond farewell to Dr. Mili Mary Mathew from the Department of Speech Language Studies who served diligently at the Institute for 2 years and Ms. Megha Ravindran from the Department of Hearing Studies who was with us for a year. We also bid adieu to Mrs Stella who is retiring, and to Mrs. Ammu, both of whom served as maid servants at the institute for 10 long years. We thank them all for their hard work and dedication and wish them all the very best for their future endeavours!

Breast Cancer Awareness
Dr. Pushpa Srinivas, a renowned Gynaecologist, delivered a talk on “Breast Cancer – What you should know and why?” to all female staff and students on August 16, 2017. The talk organized by the Women Empowerment (WE) Committee, was very informative as it highlighted the importance of self examination and early identification of breast cancer. The staff and students in the audience highly appreciated the understandable content. This talk was a step towards spreading awareness and prevention of breast cancer.
Innovation at the Institute!
Mr. Suman Gowda, Clinical Supervisor, Department of Hearing Studies, gave a talk on “Karna” to the staff of the Institute; the mannequin that was developed as an innovative project in collaboration with Mr. Hiremath from Flexitron. This is a mannequin used to monitor recreational listening levels in individuals who are exposed to noise, or music on a daily basis.
Motivational Talk
A motivational talk titled “Innovative Management Practices for Professional Excellence” was delivered by Dr. B.A. Anuradha MBA, Ph.D., Principal Al-Ameen Institute of Management Studies and Syndicate Member, Bangalore University on 1st September 2017, organized by Faculty Development Committee. It was truly inspiring with very practical anecdotes and stories that have created an everlasting impression among all.

Prime Minister’s Speech
PM Narendra Modi’s address to students on the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech was viewed live at the Institute. The speech was titled “Young India, New India”. All students and staff attended the event.
Independence Day
On August 15th, Independence Day was celebrated with fervor by the staff and students of Sunaad School. As has been the practice over the years, our partners, the Lion’s Club of Bangalore East took pride in participating with the school children. Prof R. Rangasayee welcomed the gathering. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, gave the Presidential address in which he spoke about the role of the students in upholding the growth of the nation. Lion Mohan Babu D.K., President of Bangalore East Lions Club, as the Chief Guest, hoisted the National Flag. The National Anthem was sung, followed by a speech by the Chief Guest. Prizes for the children’s academic and cocurricular accomplishments were distributed. Lion V.S. Shanthavadhan, Hon. Treasurer of Bangalore Speech & Hearing Trust, participated in the celebrations. A variety of cultural programmes were organized by the students; the pre-school tiny tots spread the message ’Save Trees’ through a skit. The day ended with a vote of thanks and distribution of sweets.

Teachers’ Day celebrations were held on 5th September 2017. Sunaad School celebrated Teachers’ Day in the institute auditorium in the morning with the high school students with hearing impairment and the D.Ed. Special Education (HI) trainees putting up a colourful show with a dance, speech, and a skit. In the afternoon, the Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) celebrated Teachers’ Day by organizing a quiz competition for teachers and screening a video thanking all teachers. Students distributed handmade cards to all teachers. The ASD School and DEALL Unit celebrated it as well in the Psychology Unit.

Onam
Onam was celebrated along with Teachers’ Day celebrations by SASH on 5th September 2017. Traditional Rangoli competition was held during Onam on 4th September 2017. A traditional dance by the students was also performed on the occasion of Onam. A Fashion show was held for all the batches and the titles of Mr. and Ms. Onam were awarded. All students were decked up in traditional Onam attire. The Psychology Unit also celebrated Onam along with students from the ASD School and DEALL Unit.

Ganesha celebrations by BASLP and MASLP students From the 23rd to 25th of August 2017, SASH organized GANESHA CHATURTHI celebrations at the institute. The prayers were conducted for 3 days and on the 3rd day, Visarjan (immersion of the idol) was done. The festive season of Navaratri was welcomed with the pooja on 22nd September 2017 by Psychology Unit.
New Beginnings
We are pleased to announce that the Institute has been empanelled under the RBSK-SAST (Rashtriya Bal Swasth Karyakrama - Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust) Cochlear Implant Scheme. An MOU was signed with K.C. General Hospital on July 21st 2017 and with Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health on 29th August 2017. Two children have received implants under this scheme and are attending Auditory Verbal Therapy at the Institute.

The institute has also received approval from the Government of Karnataka to conduct the PGDAVT Course (Post Graduate Diploma in Auditory Verbal Therapy). Approval from the Rehabilitation Council of India is under process. 10

News from College Office The admissions in to the Post Graduate courses were completed with a total of 41 students. 20 students have been admitted into the MASLP (Masters in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology) Course, 11 into the Masters in Speech Language Pathology Course, and 10 into the Masters in Audiology Course of Bangalore North University. A Board of Studies meeting was held on 18th August 2017. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Rashmi Bhat, Professor and H.O.D. Department of Hearing Studies, Dr. SRCISH. A Board of Education meeting for the Undergraduate Programme was held on September 26th 2017. The meeting was chaired by Mrs. Megha Shasidaran, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies, Dr. SRCISH.

Updates From Sunaad School
This has been an eventful quarter for Sunaad School. The total strength of the school is now 185.
Functioning of the School and students’ performance were regulated by conducting meetings of teachers and parents. A teachers meeting was held on 17.07.2017 to discuss responsibilities of teachers for the Independence Day event and a meeting of parents of Std X students was held on 19.08.17 to discuss student progress and to motivate parents to monitor their children’s school work and behaviour. Another meeting was held on 14/09/2017 to discuss the safety of children during school hours, revision for mid-term examination and the teachers were requested to send soft copies of the question papers to be ready for the midterm exams. The Parent Teacher meeting was held on 23rd September, 2017 where the teachers discussed the child’s progress, punctuality, preparation for
was organized by the ASSOCHAM association. The programme was conducted on 27.08.17 at Sri M.V. Auditorium, Bangalore and two dance performances were presented by the students of our school on 7th September, 2017. On 11th September 2017, “The Boot Camp” was organized by Dr. M. I. M. Nehruzii, Dean of Gems Business School at Fiesta Resort, Bagalur. Students of Std IX and X attended the program in which activities were conducted to develop leadership and team building skills. Celebrations and festivals keep up our spirits! Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata was celebrated on 28.08.17; the significance of the festival was explained and prasadam was distributed to all children. On August 15th, Independence Day was celebrated and on 5th September, Teachers day was celebrated.

Healthy competition is an important part of student development; and the students of Sunaad School had many opportunities for this. An inter-house “Wealth out of Waste” Competition was held on 21.07.17 and all students from pre-school to Std. X participated. Their colourful and creative work was judged by Dr. Rashmi Bhat, Dr. B.S. Premalatha, and Ms. Sneha and the 3 best exhibits were awarded. On 30.08.17, a collage competition was held and the creator of the best collage was awarded. On 19.08.17, ISKCON organized a drawing competition for students who were interested in participating; the first, second and third prizes were awarded to Suresh (Std. V B), Likith (Std. VII B), and Pallavi (Std. X A) respectively. The ‘Parents of Innovation Award’, a platform to recognize extraordinary commitment and work by schools towards student development despite of their disabilities,

Updates From Sign Language Unit This quarter was busy and eventful. In the month of July we had started teaching Group Sign Language classes at Jyothi Nivas College, which was a very rewarding and a happy experience for us to orient a group of enthusiastic budding psychologists. Many new activities were introduced in which the students actively participated. The group sign language classes were concluded in the month of September and the feedback that we received was very encouraging. They enjoyed the class activities which they actively participated and they also passed the exams which were conducted. They purchased a few handicrafts made by our deaf student Shruthi, the ear rings and book marks were much appreciated. We also received a job query from one young deaf man whom we had recommended for suitable placement. Besides this we had four young inspired people working through the week at different MNCs, but taking special care to attend the functional sign language course held on Saturdays. Their commitment to learn sign language despite their busy schedule was really remarkable. We also presently have four people taking up the beginner level course, of whom one is a psychologist and the other is a paedodondist who specializes in treating mentally challenged children. A Sign language orientation class was conducted for four interns of the psychology department. Two students with hearing impairment continued their pursuit to learn English and a new student joined as well. In the month of August, we had around nine students who were simultaneously working for their Level A program. We also had one student from an IB school joining the Functional sign language course. The department was filled with activity and the students were enthusiastically engaged in learning which was aided by the active participation of all students.

We also had an assignment at Dindigul, Tamil Nadu to help a Ph.D. student who was engaged in preparing signs for teaching Yoga. The various signs for the Yoga vocabulary were prepared over a period of 3 months which included names of parts of the body, various verbs used in yoga, names of various diseases and asanas (around 500). The instruction for the yoga asanas (around 100 in number) were put in sign language using English as the base language and the same was prepared as text for recording the asanas. In all 500 words and over a 100 asanas were signed and recorded. Ms. Prema Lohia gave her valuable inputs to help us rectify if we were too technical for the deaf to understand. The Principal of the Friary Fr. Wilson at our request permitted us to talk about sign language to the approximately 100 participants of the Counseling courses at the Friary. We were allowed 20 minutes of their valuable time and spoke to them about the lack of counselors for the deaf and the problems the deaf face. After which we taught them two hand alphabets, numbers and some vocabulary. It was well appreciated and the Fathers were very happy with the feedback. We were asked if we could conduct sign language workshops in Dindigul in the future and we happily agreed. In addition the new students of the Diploma in special education (HI) course also commenced their classes, whose strength was around 8. We also continued with the teaching of sign language with the BASLP students as well. A gentleman who is a counselor and wanted to counsel deaf clients has also joined the interpreter course. We also had Teacher’s Day celebrations and Deaf Day celebrations. Deaf people were invited to discuss bilingual method of education for the deaf. 16

Mothers Training Center The mothers training centre was full of activity this quarter. On 28.08.17, mothers’ were updated on the current trends in the field of hearing aid technology by Ms. Anjali, a specialist from Cochlear India Ltd.
observed the steps involved in making of Ganesh idols. On 24.08.17 Gowri and Ganesha idols were installed and the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi was celebrated in traditional way.
Varamahalakshmi Festival was celebrated at the center on 03.08.17. Rakshabandhan was celebrated in true sense with the girls tying Rakhi for the boys and offering them sweets. In return, the boys gave gifts to all the girls. All the children enjoyed the event very much. On account of Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Radhakrishna Fancy dress competition was held; winners were given prizes by Mrs. Lovely George, Administrator. The children also participated actively in the Independence Day celebration. Children dressed up like social reformers; it was appreciated by the Chairman, and all the participants were given prizes by the Chairman.
On 4th September, Onam festival was celebrated by putting pookalam (flower carpet). The mythological story of Lord Balichakravathi connected with the festival was narrated to the children. Banana Chips and Shakaravartti were distributed. The celebration of festivals is a mode of improving inter-personal communication between children and their parents.

The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) celebrated FRESHER’S DAY for the newcomers -1st BASLP, 1st MASLP, M.Sc. (SLP), M.Sc. (AUD) and Diploma students on 19th August 2017. The day began with the introduction of the students and they were given tasks to perform on stage. Later in the day, there were games and performances from the new and current batches. The highlight of the day was a vibrant and fun dance session. SASH also organized celebrations for Ganesha Chaturthi, Onam, and Teachers’ Day.

Social Audiology as an adjunct to Clinical Audiology

Clinical audiology deals with assessment of the auditory system for the purposes of planning intervention for hearing health conditions that threaten body structures and functions. Hearing, as a body function, has come to play a key role in Homoerectus, a social animal. The Homoerectus survived through a competitive, threatening evolutionary process with a highly evolved brain to handle complex symbols. Homoerectus is bestowed with a flexible thumb and appropriate audio-vestibular system to cope with needs to survive on land, in water, and air. In the context of auditory system, the single most important environmental demand that dictated evolution of vertebrate hearing is the ability to do Sound Scene Analysis. Those animals who did Sound Scene Analysis effectively in inter and intra species activities, survived longer. Interestingly, how mankind had been using sound clues in life and living is beyond any form of documentation. The ‘sound’ culture of mankind is not documented adequately as much evidence of our ancestors is obtained through visual based observation. For eg. The Harappa and Mohanjedora culture is reflected through visual study / inspection of such remains. Realizing the gap in Culture Studies, a new branch called ‘Acoustemology’ is launched to study, understand, and document sound culture of a society. Steven Feld, (1996) an American Authropologist coined the term to refer to ‘sonic way of knowing and being in the world’. 20
Also, many Acousticians have studied Acoustic Scene Analysis and have attempted to classify the environmental sounds. Such studies are conducted for designing of (AI) Artificial Intelligence based operations for regulating the movement of Wheel Chairs, and functioning of hearing aids, Mobile phones, etc. Be that as it may, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health proposed by WHO (2001 and 2006) describe nine domains under the component of Activities and Participation. They are Learning and Applying Knowledge (eg. Listening copying, reading), General Tasks and Demands (eg. Preparing, initiating and arranging the time and space for a simple or complex task; Handling responsibilities), Communication (eg. Communicating using signs, conversation), Mobility (eg. Walking, driving, using transportation ), Self care (eg. Toileting, dressing, eating, drinking), Domestic life (eg. Preparing meals, caring for household objects, assisting others), Interpersonal interactions and relationships etc. (eg. Maintaining family relationship, relating with strangers), Major Life areas (eg. Education, Employment, Economic life), and Community, Social and Civic Life (eg. Recreation, religious activity, political Life) Hearing loss denies access to education, employment, health, independent living, justice, recreation, information, and disaster survival (Dolores E. Battle, 2015). Therefore, as under the provisions of UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD, 2006) and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 (an Indian Act harmonized with UNCRPD, 2006), any program

dealing with habilitation or rehabilitation of persons with difficulty in hearing needs to ensure their rights. Hence, in order to ensure an inclusive World for persons who do not hear (with or without hearing aid), the people in the World of Sound need to play a proactive role to ensure equality and equalization of opportunities. Hearing is evaluated in a way as is measured or measurable for clinical purposes; in other words, what is measured is considered as hearing ability of a person. It is right but not complete. The evolution has supported hearing as a sense for its skills to perform sound scene analysis to save the species from threats, to get food, and to procreate. In the ICF framework, the current-day hearing devices including advanced speech processors do not take the social functions of hearing in to consideration; thus leaving the users vulnerable to threats of survival and procreation, depending on age. The situation is no better among Deaf people not using clues of sound for life and living. Accordingly, hearing may be defined ‘as a psychoacoustic experience incorporating sound scene analysis, facilitating both sensation and perception of energy that occupies space and time, by creating waves within the media in which it is accommodated.’ (Rangasayee and Majun, 2017). This definition gives scope to incorporate the genuine nature and need for hearing and thus targets to be achieved in restoring hearing and in creating a rightsbased inclusive World to the Deaf (who do not use hearing aid) in this World of sound. In other words, in the present circumstances, the relevance of sounds in the living environment of persons wearing hearing aids, cochlear implants, or the Deaf - who use sign language for communication are being overlooked or undermined. It is not uncommon to read news, such as, (i) ‘A Deaf woman hit by a vehicle in Hollywood’. (ii) ‘A Deaf man dies struck by a car in West Kensington2015’. (iii) ‘A Hard of Hearing woman dies in RTA in Mysore, India’. (iv) ‘A Hard of Hearing man wearing high end hearing aids hit by moving trolley in the airport’. (Personal experience of the author) (v) ‘Deaf / hard of hearing persons being unaware of bodily sounds such as belching or farting.
(vi) In an interpersonal relationship between hearing and deaf spouse, the deaf spouse made loud grunts at all times to the embarrassment of the hearing spouse, leading to disharmony in married life. Way Forward: (i) Acoustemology need to be pursued with reference to audiological needs with focus on studying, accessing, and sharing of sonic experience. (ii) Technology applications have to be channelized to create an inclusive World to those with difficulty in hearing in a world of sound. (iii) Definition / Scope of Audiology has to focus more on ICF framework and assigning accountability for such negative conditions arising as a result of not hearing or wearing an aid, or being a Sign Language-using Deaf person. (iv) Sonic way of knowing and being in the world has to be emphasized. (v) Promoting cues / indicators to provide timely information of crucial changes of the human system and its environment. Thus, Social Audiology defined as ‘studying and facilitating Sound Scene Analysis, and making such sound clues accessible by addressing environmental factors as well as activities and participation of persons who have difficulty in hearing or Deaf (Signers)’, needs to be promoted to ensure the emergence of a rights-based world as under UNCRPD (2006) and RPD Act 2016, an Indian Act. The scope of Social Audiology includes, 1. Sound Scene Analysis. 2. Guiding use and Development of appropriate technologies to the heterogenous group of people denied of sound clues. 3. Damage control measures to reduce negative impacts of hearing loss on a persons life including limitations in use of technology at bed time, bullying, etc. 4. Addressing all issues relating to impact of hearing loss on a persons life due to not hearing sound clues with or without amplification devices. 5. Promote environmental facilities and reduce the barriers to optimize activities and participation, including prevention strategies.

My child is diagnosed with hearing loss . . . What next?

Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing Parents are devastated when they get the confirmation of what they may or may not have suspected all along. They undergo a series of reactions such as denial, blame, grief, and finally reluctant acceptance. This cycle will involve different durations for different families. Some parents prefer the ‘wait and watch’ policy. They may have been told by elders in the family or community about other children behaving similarly and then catching up on speech and language once they are older. Relatives would have recited anecdotes of some family member who developed speech late. Medical professionals may have advised waiting as well. On the other hand, some families want to shop around and visit several experts to get reconfirmation of the diagnosis. Audiologists have a major role to play in information dissemination post diagnosis. They offer support not only for the child but for the entire family. Coping with the diagnosis of hearing loss is not easy; each family has its own way of dealing with it. Audiologists need to understand this and need to spend a lot of time with parents and family members. First and foremost, the parents do not know what information they have to ask for. It is difficult to take in all the technical information regarding the condition and the options for rehabilitation. The fact that the child will have to wear a hearing device lifelong is one major issue to deal with. The fact that the condition is permanent and medically not treatable is another. Parents tend to think about the “here and now” rather than the long term. This implies that the job of an audiologist is also a long term one. One might be called to answer questions and solve problems as and when they arise throughout life. What should the parents know/ask for? Details of the condition - Type (Conductive/ sensorineural) ,Degree(mild-profound), Symmetry, Progression , and Permanency. 22
Details of tests conducted - For naïve clients and families, the terms PTA/BOA/Immittance /ABR /OAE do not make sense .Explanations as to what each test measures and why it is necessary to repeat some of them have to be given. The importance of establishing pure tone thresholds has to be highlighted. Options for treatment - Medical, Surgical, Use of devices (Hearing aids/Cochlear implants/any other) Realistic expectations - How soon should the device be fitted? Should it be fitted for one or both ears? What is the life of the device? Are up-gradations possible? Should therapy be given? How soon should it start? How much of therapy and for how long? What are the options available for communication (auditory, auditory-visual, total, manual)? The financials - Since using a device is not only a onetime investment, information regarding recurring costs for maintenance, replacement of parts, batteries, and ear moulds in case of hearing aids, accessories for both HA/CI, and up-gradation costs should be sought by caregivers. Need for Monitoring - This is not only for the hearing status but for language and speech development too. At least once a year, tests need to be repeated to check the status of hearing. In case a device is being used and therapy is conducted, repeat tests will give an idea about improvement in speech and language. This helps the audiologist to determine if progress is adequate and if it isn’t, the audiologist is prompted to check whether amplification is sufficient or not. If needed, reprogramming of the device or referral for further evaluations may be done. Expected outcome - Speech and language, Educational, Social, Occupational, and Recreational issues

Information on facilities available - Caregivers are often clueless about facilities and provisions available for persons with hearing impairment. Information regarding pension, scholarships, travel concessions (not only for the client but for at least one member of the family), language exemptions during school, leave available for working mothers and fathers for rehabilitation involvement etc. should be known. Care givers should also be made aware of schemes available for purchase of devices such as the chief minister’s fund, prime minister’s fund, ADIPS, RBSK , and other sources of financial assistance. However, it is important to remember that the Audiologist needs to give the above information over several sittings. He/she may need to repeat the same many times. It is good practice to provide reading material that reiterates what has been already discussed.
The uniqueness and individual capabilities of each child will make it a challenge to foresee the ultimate outcome and the most experienced Audiologist also may not be able to predict what your child is going to be 20 years later. It would be beneficial to be part of support groups for families where a parent can interact with experienced parents and clarify doubts on issues one has to face in daily life. In fact, a lot of coping suggestions and emotional support can be provided by such groups. At the Department of Hearing Studies of Dr. SRCISH, the newly diagnosed families are referred to the Mother’s Training Unit to have a first-hand experience of children in various stages of rehabilitation along with their mothers. It is hoped that this procedure helps parents understand the entire process, the necessity of full time involvement, the expected outcomes etc.
What They Had To Say? Serving the clients with difficulties in speech, language, hearing and swallowing is the purpose of the institute. As a routine we collect feedback from the willing clients after the diagnostic counselling is completed; the gist of this feedback is given below. Referrals are predominantly from medical practitioners, followed by word-of-mouth, less than 1/5 visit us through media coverage. Over 80 percent have reported that the staff were courteous and helpful. All were satisfied and none rated as poor.
All said that the results of the tests findings and treatment options were explained to them expect one client who had been advised some more tests. Also, 4 percent reported that the staff could not clarify all their doubts. These clients had sought clarification of the cause of the health status which could not be addressed by the serving Audiologist/SLPs/Psychologist as fixing the cause pertains to the discipline of medicine. The waiting time, on the average is less than 20 minutes to one hour. While complimenting the staff for their pleasant helpful courteous approach to clients, all efforts are being taken to improve the quality and care of services.

Clinical Facilities
Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies. Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service. Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs. Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.
Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc. Endostroboscopy: The Institute is equipped with state of the art Endostroboscope facility to assess vocal cord vibration patterns, mucosal pliability, study the underlying layered structure of the vocal folds, etc. This accurate diagnostics help the patient to get the most appropriate treatment.
Speech Therapy Services Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing deals with a number of investigatory and treatment protocols related to speech disabilities. Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible. Stuttering - is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech, sometimes accompanied by struggling behaviors. Cleft lip and Palate - refers to a physical condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth leading to speech disorders. Cerebral Palsy (CP) - reflects a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordinations due to anomaly of the developing brain.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life. Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent. Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing. Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. Other Unique Specialized Services Reaching out beyond medical diagnostic and clinical services, the Institute has enlarged its commitment to the cause through founding and efficient management of schools that cater to specific needs : School for children with Autism and Learning Disability for slow learners. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired that provides primary and middle school main-stream education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training trains individuals with basic sign language skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level courses in Indian Sign language. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through which the institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out-of-school children with special needs. Mothers’ Training Centre that provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment by providing adequate training for their mother. The services offered by the Institute are expanding meeting every emerging need in the society. Placement Cell - A separate cell that is well connected with the corporate world has been set up for finding rewarding and suitable jobs / careers for speech and hearing impaired adults. Mobile Camps and Outreach Screening Services are regularly conducted at neonatal wards of hospitals and nursing homes, schools, villages, community health centres, institutions and organisations which identify speech, hearing and learning problems.
