During the last 3 months we had been busy in acclimatizing the new entrants to UG & PG courses and trying to balance their academic needs and interests. Addition of a new gym has added flavor to the campus life. Two important events namely 3 Days ICMR Co-sponsored RCI CRE on “Assessment of Neurogenic Communication Disorders: Illustrative Case Studies held from 21st to 23rd August 2014 and International Day of the Deaf celebration on 26th and 27th September 2014 are noteworthy. I am delighted to share that SUNAAD School for Hearing Impaired got award from the Block Education Office, North Zone, Bangalore, for 100% pass in SSLC examination conducted by the Karnataka State Board. Looking forward to the visit of international experts in the coming months, an impetus to moving towards excellence. Wishing you all Happy and safe Diwali.

Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust Meeting
The meeting of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust was held on 27th August 2014 at the Com-Deall Office. Issues related to development activities, allocation of funds and grants for various activities of the Institute, events related to college, Institute and hostels were discussed. The Honorable Trustees also discussed and reviewed the successful completion of the following events: • Inauguration of Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur Gym and Health Care centre, • Independence Day celebrations • 3 days National Seminar on “Assessment of Neurogenic Communication disorders, • Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) funded Mobile Speech and Hearing Clinic. They further discussed on the arrangements to be made for observance of “International Day of the Deaf ” to be held on 26th and 27th September 2014. Inauguration of Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur Gym & Health Care Center Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur Gym & Health Care Center was inaugurated on Tuesday the 12th August 2014 by Sri B. Govindaraj, Hon’ble Corporator of BBMP. Rtn. Manandi N. Suresh, Member of our Advisory Board inaugurated the Smart Class Room donated by Smt. T. Nagarathna in fond & respectful memory of her husband Sri N.K. Subramhanyam. Rtn. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust welcomed the gathering. Sri C.R. Jayachandra Setty, Trustee who is instrumental in getting substantial grants for the Gym and Health Care Center briefed the gathering on Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur and his magnanimous contribution to various institutions and Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing in particular. Sri B. Govinda Raj in
his address appreciated the efforts taken by the Institute in catering to the needs of the Speech and Hearing impaired persons and children. He promised that he would always extend his wholehearted support to the Institute and assured that he would put in his efforts in getting a suitable land for the Institute for its developmental activities. The much awaited 3 Days ICMR Co-sponsored RCI CRE on “Assessment of Neurogenic Communication Disorders: Illustrative Case Studies” held at the Institute auditorium from 21st August to 23rd August 2014 was successfully conducted by the Department of Speech Language Studies. We were privileged to have Dr. M.S. Mahadeviah, Medical Director & Paediatric Developmental Neurologist, Spastic Society of Karnataka, Bangalore, as the Chief Guest and Dr. M. Jayaram, Senior Professor & Dean, Faculty of Neurosciences, NIMHANS, Bangalore as the Guest of Honour. Rtn. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech & Hearing Trust, welcomed the gathering. Dr. B.S. Premalatha, HOD, Speech Language Studies spoke about the need and goals of the seminar. Dr. Madhuri Gore, Deputy Director (Technical) & Principal, Dr. SRC ISH introduced the Chief Guest and Prof. R. Rangasayee, Director (Technical), Dr. SRC ISH introduced the Guest of Honour to the gathering. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Vice Principal & HOD, Hearing Sciences gave away the vote
of thanks. The key note address on ‘Issues & Challenges in Assessment of Neurogenic Communication disorders’ was given by Dr. M. Jayaram. The seminar attracted delegates from all corners of the country. We welcomed delegates from as many as 9 colleges namely Naseems Institute of Speech Hearing- Bangalore, National Institute of Speech & Hearing - Trivandrum, Bharatiya Vidyapeeth Deemed University - Pune, Topiwala National Medical College - Mumbai, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped Mumbai, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped – Southern Regional Centre, Secunderabad, Helen Keller Institute, Secunderabad, Father Mullers College of Speech and Hearing - Mangalore & a total of 212 delegates (including 41 professionals and 171 students) attended the seminar. We were fortunate to have 21 resource persons & Chair persons (from various parts of India namely Mumbai, Pune, Secunderabad, Chennai, Mangalore & Bangalore) who contributed immensely towards the success of the seminar. The seminar was advantageously divided into 6 scientific sessions based on the subject matter targeted for the seminar. The first scientific session sponsored by the Indian speech and Hearing Association focused on Aphasia Syndromes. Key points that emerged were: • results of any imaging techniques (CT Scan, MRI or fMRI) needs to be correlated with the observable clinical manifestations. • existence of heterogeneity in clinical correlates of aphasic syndromes and site of lesion. • hallmark features of different aphasic syndromes (with excellent audio visual case presentations). The second scientific session sponsored by Nayak’s Hearing Care Clinic, Bangalore dealt with Dementia and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Crucial information that surfaced among others included: • exploring Dementia syndrome through various cranioanatomical, neurophysiological, & pathological aspects rather than a single point of view. • importance of regularly updating on the vast amount of new and critical information surfacing from recent researches involving complexity of the disorder, clinical markers and improved tools for early identification & evaluation encompassing descriptive documentation of cognitive behavioral impairment & differential diagnosis.

• how selective assessment tests can provide quantitative measures of performance in clients with TBI & significance of ongoing testing and accurate behavioral monitoring. • the increasing need to develop assessment battery sensitive to crosscultural and cross-linguistic issues and Indian Sign Language. Vaivhav Speech & Hearing Centre, Mysore, sponsored the third scientific session and the fourth scientific session was sponsored jointly by Meenakshi ENT Speciality Centre & Magpie Speech Language Therapy Centre, Bangalore. These sessions provided insights on clinical correlates between anatomical lesions, physiologic imaging reports, clinical observation and different Dysarthria syndromes. Essential points that came forward were: • need to correlate imaging studies and speech characteristics to differentially diagnose different Dysarthria syndromes. • the increasing role and responsibility of SLPs in the diagnostic team. The fifth and the sixth scientific sessions were sponsored by Indian Counsel of Medical Research and Plexus Neuro and Stem Cell Research Centre respectively. The fifth session covered assessment procedures for allied disorders of aphasia including agraphia, alexia and their known and rare clinical manifestations and characteristics. An explicit overview of Augmentative Alternative Communication available for individuals with neurogenic communication disorders were brought forward. The Sixth session shifted attention to related areas of drooling assessment and further focused on use of ICF in assessment of neurogenic communication disorders. Pertinent observations made were that the various theme based language assessment protocols such as psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic models, do not effectively address the domains of ICF (WHO 2001). In other words, the approaches followed measure the health status (impairment), or capacity and performance without studying its impact on activities & participation (ICF, WHO 2001). The Proceedings for the Seminar was brought forward and a softcopy of the same in the form of CD was distributed among all the delegates and the resource persons. We take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to all the Chair Persons’, Speakers’, Delegates’, Sponsorers’, and Guests’, whose contribution made the seminar a success.

‘International Day of the Deaf’ Celebrations The International Day of the Deaf was celebrated at Dr. SRCISH on 26th and 27th Sep 2014. In the inaugural address Hon’ble Nadoja Dr. Justice S.R. Nayak, Chairman, Law Commission of Karnataka lauded the Institute for its initiatives. He said the Article 21 enlarges its sweep to encompass human personality in its full bloom with invigorated life which is a wealth to any human being to earn his livelihood, to sustain the dignity of person and to live a life with human dignity, comfort and equality. He emphasized that the development and empowerment of disabled persons in order to bring them at par with the rest of society is a commitment enshrined in the constitution.

Mr. Â B. Kalyan, Chief Executive, Karnataka State Federation of Deaf said that the deaf people in Karnataka are affected very much in day to day living such as in Hospitals, Banks, Police station, Railway station etc. without sign language interpreters. He said there is no single training college for this in the entire Karnataka State. He suggested that the Govt may sponsor suitable agency to conduct such training. Earlier Rotarian M.S. Venkatesh, Director and Chairman of the Trust welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Gowroo Somana, President of Karnataka women Association of the Deaf said the deaf women do not have access to health services. She added that many deaf men and women may need counselling services in sign language for better understanding among the deaf couple. Many marriages are in doldrums in the absence of such services, she said. Dr. Rashmi Bhat, Vice Principal proposed the vote of thanks. CA D L Suresh Babu, Secretary of the Trust honoured the Chief Guest Nadoja Dr. Justice S.R. Nayak. On 27th a Walkathon was flagged off by ASI Mr. Hanumanthiah R.K. of Bansawadi Police Station. Over 300 deaf and hearing persons took part displaying placards to create awareness about Sign language, etc. Later, Dr. Madhuri Gore, Principal of Dr. SRCISH and Prof. Rangasayee, Director (Technical) Dr. SRCISH spoke on habilitation options and UNCRPD.

Seminars / Workshops / Conferences at the Institute On the 27th of August 2014, Mr. Devaiah, Product specialist from Cochlear Medical Device India Private Ltd. gave a talk on Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) for the students and staff (Department of Hearing Sciences). On 14th of August 2014, Dr. Vishwa Bhat, Ph.D., CCC-A; FAAA, Associate Professor from William Paterson University delivered a lecture on “Auditory Processing Disorders testing, diagnosis and intervention” to the staff of the department of hearing studies and final year BASLP, M.Sc. Audiology and MASLP students. On the 4th of September 2014, Mr. Nagarjun, Clinical Audiologist at Widex India Pvt. Ltd. gave a talk to the faculty members of the Dept. of Hearing Sciences about latest technology advancements in Widex hearing aids. On the 19th of September 2014, Mr. Saji Marthurkara, Research Audiologist, Cochlear Medical Device Pvt. Ltd. gave a talk on Signal Processing in Cochlear Implants.

Inter-College Quiz Competition On 24th July 2014, the Department of Hearing Studies, Dr. SRCISH, conducted an Inter-College Quiz in Audiology. This event was the first of its kind where students from our Institute and SAMVAAD Institute of Speech and Hearing participated. The competition was held in ISH auditorium from 1.30 p.m to 2.30 p.m. There were totally six teams, three from each college. Each team comprised of a student from II M.Sc., III BASLP and II BASLP. The quiz master for the event was Ms. Nisha Sara Kuruvilla (Lecturer, Dept. Hearing Studies) and the competition was moderated by Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat (Vice Principal and HOD, Dept. Hearing Studies). The staff members of the department were actively involved in this event to make it a success. The first prize was secured by one of the teams representing ISH and the participants were Mr. Suman Gowda (II MASLP), Ms. Eliza Baby (III BASLP) and Ms. Srividya (II BASLP). The second position was secured by the team from SAMVAAD College and the participants were Rudrasis Swain (II MASLP), Dinesh Choudhary (III BASLP) and Angel Hima Binoy (II BASLP). New Instruments Added The Department of Hearing Studies is happy to share that we have received two new instruments: Biologic AEP system to perform auditory evoked potential testing where Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), Middle Latency Response (MLR), Long Latency Response (LLR), P300, Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP), chirp Auditory Brainstem Response can be tested. Sport event: On the first week of August SASH organized an inter-college football tournament. SAMVAAD and Naseema Institute of Speech and Hearing were invited to play in the tournament. Naseema Institutewas the champion and won the tournament against our home team by 1 to 0 in penalty.
Ganesh Chathurthy celebrated in honor of the God Ganesha
Ganesh Chathurthi: Ganesh Chathurthi was celebrated in honor of the God Ganesha, the elephant headed remover of obstacles and the God of beginnings and wisdom, from 28th August 2014 to 1st September 2014. The event started by 6:30 a.m., all the students enthusiastically participated for the event. Each day Pooja was held in the morning and games like dumcharades, musical chair, chain games etc., were organized for the evenings. To make the event more exciting a small “badminton competition” was also conducted for these three days. On 1st September 2014 “Visarjan” ceremony was arranged.
Teachers’ Day and Onam: 5th September 2014 was a day of dual celebrations- Teachers’ Day as well as Onam was celebrated cheerfully and with much enthusiasm. “Pookalam” competition was held in the Multipurpose Hall from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. All the students wore traditional dresses. A one hour program was arranged in the Institute auditorium from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm to celebrate Teachers Day and Onam. All the Staff members were invited, the program started with a melodious Onam song, and “thiruvathirakali” by the 1st BSLPA students followed by cake cutting. Fun games were organized for the teachers.
Sunaad School for Hearing Impairment Independence Day Celebration The past three months have been very busy, productive as well as full of entertainment for teachers and students alike. Few highlights includes teacher’s meeting, parent meeting, inter-house competition, awards ceremony, Vinayaka Chathurthi, teacher’s day and Onam celebration. Parents Meeting: Parents Meeting was organized on 11th July 2014 wherein efforts were taken to provide information to the parents regarding importance of regular use of hearing aids, maintenance of hearing aids, regular conditioning to sounds, and completion of follow up work given from the school. Parents of children who had behavior problems were informed about their kids’ unacceptable behavior in the school premises and were counselled regarding how to help them out. Meetings Attended by Staff: Mrs. Dhakshayani attended a meeting on 19th July 2014, which was called by the BEO office to discuss about CCE (Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation) method to be followed in school. Following the meeting a workshop was conducted by the BEO office from 18th August 2014 to 21st August 2014 regarding CCE method. Teachers of Xth Std. attended the workshop and the following points were reviewed: • Four formative assessment to be conducted. • Project work to be completed in different subject. • Marks allotment for internal and external assessment. Teachers’ Meeting: Teachers’ meeting was conducted on 28th of July 2014. The meeting focused on discussions about scheduling unit tests, marks allotment for each subject and maintenance of discipline and neatness. Teacher in charge for lunch and short breaks were also decided upon.
Teachers’ meeting was conducted on 11th August 2014 to allot duties and responsibilities of the teachers for Independence Day celebration. Inter House Competition: various competitive events took place in the span of the last 3 months, few of them are mentioned below: Drawing and coloring competition was conducted in the month of august for children from preschool to IXth Std. Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph (Head of Psychology Unit) and Mrs. Margret Joseph (Head of Sign Language Cell) judged the competition. On the occasion of Krishna Janamashtami ISKON conducted drawing and coloring competition in the school premises. Mr. Sharan, Mr. Harshit and Mr. Suresh won the competition. Vinayaka Chathurthi: Vinayaka Chathurthi was celebrated on 1st of September 2014, with great excitement by the students and the staff members of the school. The Idol was adorned with garland and flowers. The function began with an invocation by Mrs. Kusumalatha. Teachers told stories of Lord Vinayaka… mythological stories of the Lord’s elephant head, half broken tusk and Lord’s favorite “Modaka” etc were told in both Kannada and English. Prasadam cooked by the teachers were distributed to all the students. Teacher’s Day Celebration: Teacher’s day was celebrated on 5th September 2014, at Smt. K.S. Bramarambha & Dr. K.S. Sriram Auditorium, ISH by the students of Sunaand School, DHLS students, and B.Ed. Students. Songs and dance by the students were performed and snacks and soft drinks were served for all at the end of the program.

Onam Celebration: Onam was celebrated on 6th September 2014. The entrance of the school was decorated with Pookolum, and students were told about the importance of Onam festival. In the afternoon activities like conversation lesson, storytelling, composition etc were carried out.

Independence Day Celebration: The 67th Independence Day was celebrated at the Institute on Friday the 15th August 2014. Rtn. M. S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust welcomed the gathering and lauded the contribution of Lions Club of Bangalore East to the Institute in the developmental activities. Lion. Sudheer Kumar Reddy, President of Lions Club of Bangalore East hoisted the National Flag and addressed the gathering. tantrums Is your child’s behaviour worrying you?
Many parents worry about their children’s, behavior tantrums. Many a times, at times it is difficult to understand whether a child’s behavior is normal or a sign of behavior disorders. Mostly children exhibit Tantrums:
All young children from time to time will cry, whine, complain, cling, shout, resist, and disobey teachers and parents. Every parent experiences temper tantrums. In children from 1-4 years of age, temper tantrums are common in both boys and girls. Temper tantrums although normal can become very embarrassing and upsetting for parents and teachers as it becomes a difficult challenge to manage. Temper tantrums can become special problems when they occur frequently and intensity than is typical for the age of child. Temper tantrums start showing at about the age of 1 ½ - 2 years, wherein children will tests the limits. They want to see how far they can go before a parent or teacher stops this behavior. Age 2 is characterized by egocentrism where they cannot see another person’s point of view. They want to be independent similar to what is seen during adolescence. When children are unable to get what they want, they show their frustration by crying, yelling or hitting. When the child’s need for being independent collides with the parents or teachers need for compliance or safety; the environment or condition becomes a perfect example for struggle of power or a temper tantrum. By the age of 3; children are normally less impulsive and have the ability to use language to express their needs. Temper tantrums during this age are less frequent and less severe. Sometime a preschooler learns that throwing a tantrum is a good way to get what they want. Most children at the age of 4 have the necessary motor and physical skills to meet their own needs without adult assistance. They also have better language that allows
them to express their anger, solve problems and reach a Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph compromise. Nevertheless, Head of Psychology Unit school age children still can have temper tantrums when they are faced with new academic challenges and new interpersonal situations in school. There are number of ways to handle a tantrum: Ignore the tantrum if it is being thrown to get your attention; once the tantrum is over and your child is calm, give the needed attention. Remain calm, before you manage the child; first manage yourself and your behavior. Do not argue with the child, hitting or yelling will only worsen the tantrum. Try to intervene before the child is out of control. Get to the child’s eye level and tell him/her that she is not behaving well. Try to positively distract the child by shifting his/her focus. If the child is out of control and is going to hurt him/her or self or others, hold the child, and let the child know that you will leave him/her once he/she is calm. Never give in to a tantrum, it will only increase the frequency of the tantrum Never reward the child after tantrum for calming down, some children will associate throwing a tantrum will lead to a reward or a treat later. Teach the child that anger is a feeling and there are various ways to express anger. If tantrums are frequent, intense, and injurious to self and others consult a mental health professional, who can provide help to you and your child.
Celebrations: In ASD School, Psychology Unit, Independence Day was celebrated on August 13th 2014. Parents and children participated in a drawing and colouring competition. Teachers’ day was celebrated by the Parent Association of ASD School and Parents of children enrolled in the Com DEALL. Unit organized games for the staff. of encouragement all children were given cash prizes of Rs.100/- each. On Krishna Janmashtami, fancy dress competition was held and prizes were given to the 6 best entries. The prizes were sponsored by the co-coordinator of the Centre. Children along with their mothers were taken to Pottery Town to show the making of Ganesha Idols. Children enjoyed the sight of Ganesha idols displayed on the streets.
August is the month of festivals. On August 7th ‘Varamahalakshmi’ festival was celebrated at the centre. Mothers and children worshipped goddess Laskmi and exchanged ‘thabula’ and ‘bangels were distributed to the girls attending the centre.
September 5th the teachers’ Day was celebrated at the centre. Children came with roses in their hands and thanked their teachers and seeked their blessings. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishna’s photo was garlanded and children offered floral tribute. Ms. Mamatha Senior mother of the centre attended the celebrations and spoke to mothers to make the best use of the celebrations held at the centre. She explained how a single incident can be utilized to develop various concepts in children.
Children participated in ‘Independence Day” celebrations held at the Institute. Children participated in fancy dress depicting various ‘helpers of the society’. It was appreciated by all the audience present on this occasion. As a token
September is also the month of the assessment of progress of the children. Both oral and writing skills of the children were evaluated and mothers were counseled about the progress of their wards.
Interpretation Services Individual cases for interpretation, brought to the sign language cell were all victims. They were either assaulted or denied of their rights or it was a dowry harassment or molested for having supported their family members. There were four such victims who came in August and September 2014.
Sign Language
On 14th July, there was a follow up court case at Chamraja Nagar which was interpreted earlier at Yellandur Court in April 2013. The victim was a 20year old hearing impaired orphan. A mentally challenged 9 year old girl at Malleswaram Hospital was interpreted and her statement was immediately given to Malleswaram Police, who approached us that afternoon on 22nd August. New Admissions New admissions for Sign Language Courses were five members. Those who were enrolled for a short term course of one month have completed the same and have received certificates. The two of them who have taken the Interpreters Sign Language Course are still continuing their classes. Another five students who were enrolled during January and May have discontinued for certain reasons and yet to take up the exam. The Sign Language cell played an important part in the celebration of “International Day of the Deaf ” that took place on 26th and 27th September 2014. This was arranged to create awareness among the general public. Some of the issues that were targeted in this session were Inclusion of these individuals, their abilities, importance on ear care etc, but mainly the importance of Sign Language as a mode of communication for Deaf persons. 15 | ISH LINK | October 2014
