Chairman’ s Note Greetings to all! It is my pleasure to be elected as Chairman and Director of the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust (Aided by Lions Club of Bangalore East) which runs the prestigious Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing College, Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired and Dr. SRC BNG Research Centre. As I take over the reins from the capable hands of Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, I thank him profusely for his service to this institute. I also thank all the trustees for their faith in me and giving me the responsibility to lead this wonderful organization working in the field of Speech and Hearing. This issue of Ishlink incorporates activities from January to September 2020. We are proud to announce that the first issue of the Ishlink Newsletter for 2020 was released in February. A 3-day parent training programme was conducted by the Psychology Unit in February. World Hearing Day was celebrated in March with awareness programmes and camps. Graduation Day for Std. 10 students of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired was conducted in March. 11 students passed the Karnataka Board SSLC examination. Dr. S.R.C.ISH has proved its resilience in times of adversity. Be it online assessment and therapy sessions, webinars, or social media awareness programmes, all units of Dr. S.R.C.ISH endeavoured to provide services to those in need in the safety of their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the institute, strict sanitization and other protocols are followed to ensure safety of all. Classes and clinical practicum for undergraduate and graduate students also continued on online platforms.

Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Travel Fellow Dr. Caroline Bowen CPSP, ASHA Fellow, Hon. FRCSLT, the 6th Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Travel Fellowship Awardee, visited the institute on 12th February 2020. She delivered a talk on “Making the minutes count: Streamlining assessment and intervention for children with speech sound disorders”. Staff and students of the institute attended the talk which proved profitable and insightful.

Webinars Conducted
Research Skills and Statistics in Speech and Hearing Sciences: In the month of August, BNGRC organized a series of webinars on ‘Research Skills and Statistics in Speech and Hearing Sciences’ for masters and Ph.D. students using the google meet platform. Speakers for the 5 session included Dr. Jayshree Bhat, Dr. Sudhin Kurupalli, and Dr. Gagan Bajaj (KMC, Mangalore), Dr. Usha Manjunath (MD, IIHMR), and Dr. Santhosha B. (Statistician, NIMIMS). The webinar aimed at highlighting the process of research from the initial research question to publication including ethical and statistical aspects. All the speakers and registrants were provided with e-certificates for the same. Audiology: The B.N. Gupta Research Centre organized and conducted an online module on Audiology for ENT PG students in collaboration with Sahasra Ent Research Foundation, Hyderabad. The presentations involved Audiology topics from Audiometry to Cochlear implants; the faculty conducted webinars on these topics every Saturday through Webex. In collaboration with ISHA-BC and other speech and hearing institutions from Bangalore, webinars on various topics of interest to Masters students of Bangalore University were organized.
Fellowship Programme
The 3rd batch of the fellowship programme on “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment”, which commenced on 20th January, 2020 has been successfully completed. Students received exposure to all types of oral cancer patients in the month of March 2020. During the lockdown, in the month of April, the fellows received online classes from Dr. B.S. Tele-rehabilitation The Covid-19 pandemic fast-forwarded the growth of tele-rehabilitation across the globe and at Dr. S.R.C.ISH too! All assessment and therapeutic services in the Department of Speech Language Studies are now available online. The Department of Hearing Studies offered online troubleshooting support for Cochlear Implant recipients during the lock down period. The Auditory Verbal Therapy Unit also offers tele-rehabilitation for children using Cochlear Implants. The Psychology Unit now offers behaviour therapy and remedial training online. Children from the Comm DEALL programme also receive therapy online.

Events World Hearing Day 2020
A week-long free hearing screening camp from 2nd March, 2020 to 7th March 2020 was conducted at the institute. Awareness programs at rural and urban areas on the hearing loss and the management options available were carried out. The target audience in the urban area were the general public and in the rural areas, it was the people who attended the Hearing Screening Camp. The mannequin developed by the institute, called the ‘Karna’ a replica of ‘Jouline’ created by Dangerous Decibels headed by Dr. Billy Martin measures the levels of music played by one’s personal music system in the ear. This mannequin was used in the hearing screening camps to create awareness about the hazardous effect of recreational hearing. A ‘Cyclothon’ was organized in the heart of the city on 7th March 2020. This event was covered by local news channels, was published in local newspapers, and attracted a sizeable amount of people. A cultural programme was conducted for children using cochlear implants.

Updates from B.N. Gupta Research Centre Research & Public Awareness Activities
• On 12th and 13th February 2020, a questionnaire-based study was conducted by BNGRC on “Awareness of the public on the effects of Noise”. This was a field study; the questionnaire was responded to by the general public, attending a medical exhibition organized by NIMHANS. They were also sensitized to effects of noise through the real life experience of their exposure to noise levels using material developed under project “KARNA”. • BNGRC is working on increasing awareness of the field of speech and hearing by improving the social media presence of Dr. S.R.C.ISH and Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust and their activities. Regular technical and non-technical updates are posted on Facebook and Linkedin. • An online platform for raising crowd source funding was initiated using the online portal, ‘Ketto’; funding was sought for establishing new-born hearing screening in district hospitals. This has created an awareness of the Institute activity globally.
Publications
The first issue of the new Journal of the Institute was published in February 2020. It contained 10 original scientific articles and compendiums of dissertation work of Dr. S.R.C.ISH students’ dissertation work. The first issue was officially released by Dr. Caroline Bowen, on 12th Feb 2020. The editor, Dr. G. Purushothama and his team of editorial members worked on all aspects of reviewing, editing, seeking articles and preparing final print versions. We are and enthusiastic and hopeful that it will gain acceptability and popularity among professionals and institutions in India.
‘Manual of Speech Perception’, a handbook with test stimulus items in easy usable format and interpretation is set to be released as well. This handbook can be used by practicing professionals to determine improvement in hearing impaired children undergoing therapy.
Collaborative Research:
As part of collaborative Research with Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, registration of the senior faculty as PhD guides at Doctoral Center MANIPAL academy was completed. Of the 9 applications sent, 5 have completed the 1st set of proposal presentations to MAHE expert committee, the Research Technical Committee, and Ethical Committee of the Institute. The Doctoral Advisory Committee for each PhD candidate was formed and approval for the members obtained for the same. BNGRC is in the process of developing patient management software in collaboration with NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Management, Mangalore.
Annual Committee Meetings
Research Technical Committee (RTC) and Institute Ethical Committee (IEC) online for the approval of the PHD proposals, the IEEE project and the Masters dissertations were conducted with Dr. Madhuri Gore as Chairperson for RTC and Dr. Indira Jaiprakash as Chairperson of IEC.
Visiting Experts
• Dr. Anantha Krishnan, Prof. Purdue University, USA interacted with the faculty of BNGRC and exchanged information on possible research themes like “FFR in diverse population” during his visit to Dr.S.R.C.ISH. • Dr. Caroline Bowen, Fellow of Dr. S R Chandrasekhar travel award for ISHACON, visited the institute and the BNGRC on 12th Feb 2020.
Updates from College Office Online classes were taken to complete the II, IV, and IV BASLP, and II MASLP, M.Sc Audiology and M.Sc Speech Language Pathology semesters. Classes for I, III and V semester BASLP, and III semester MASLP, M.Sc Audiology and M.Sc Speech Language Pathology students have begun online. A Virtual Induction Programme was conducted on 7th September 2020 for the 40 new students admitted in to the BASLP course from across the country.

Updates from Sunaad School Dental Check-up
Dentists from the department of Pediatric Dentistry of B.R. Ambedkar Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore conducted a dental check-up for all children of the school. They created awareness about oral hygiene among the students.
Job Fair
The Government of Karnataka with the help of VOICE, NGO organization organized a job fair for Differently abled people including those with physical, hearing, and visual impairments who have completed 10th/PUC/ Diploma/Degree on 23-02-2020. It was held at Karnataka State Reserve police playground Koramangala, Bangalore. Ms. Susheela Joseph from Sunaad School voluntarily attended the job fair and helped with interpretation of the spoken language.
Phonak Idol 2020
To mark ‘World Hearing Day’ on March 3rd 2020, Phonak Hearing Aid Company organized ‘Phonak Idol 2020’, a talent recognition platform for children with hearing loss. Events included miming, dramatics, drawing, and painting. Children from all over India enrolled in the events. Out of 486 competitors, Master Suresh’s drawing entry was among the final 10 selected. Master Suresh is a student of Std. 7 at Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired. He received his Phonak idol 2020 certificate and prize money from Miss World Deaf, Vidisha Baliyan, in Mumbai. It was indeed a proud moment for the school as well as for Dr. S.R.C.ISH.

On 06.01.2020, Mr. C. Umesh, District Welfare Officer, visited Sunaad School for an inspection.
Inter School Competition
7 students from Sunaad School received prizes for paintings on the 10th of January, 2020 at Bal Bhavan, Cubbon Park, Bangalore. The paintings were prepared in the month of December to mark ‘World Disabled Day’. The event was organized by the Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare.

Updates from Sunaad School Visitors
Mr. D. Krishna, BEO, Bangalore North-3 visited Sunaad school on 11-02-2020 and provided guidelines for the Std. 10 examinations. He verified the children’s projects and appreciated their talent.
SSLC Result
SSLC results for the academic year 2019-2020 were announced on 10-08-2020. 21 children including 10 from the Kannada medium section and 11 from the English medium section appeared for the Karnataka Board SSLC examination. 15 students passed the examination. The highest scorers were:

On 13-02-2020, the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) conducted a workshop to teach art and craft to the children at MAP Education Centre, Mohan Mansion, Kasturaba Road, Bangalore. Workshop for Teachers
Mrs. Manasa Devi, Advisor, Sunaad School, organized a workshop for teachers’ mental health on the 27th of January, 2020. Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph, HOD, Psychology Unit, along with the staff conducted a lively workshop for teachers that helped them look into themselves and realize their value. This helped teachers relax and be less stressed.
Sunaad School during the Pandemic
Despite the school remaining closed from 13th March 2020 onwards due to the Covid-19 pandemic, school work did not come to a halt. During the time of school closure, teachers continued their diligent work from the safety of their homes. Video lessons, assignments, notes, and activities were sent to children through WhatsApp. The teachers monitored the completion of activities by checking the answers sent by the children.
Celebrations
Sankranti: was celebrated on the 14th of January 2020. After explaining the importance of the festival and the harvest season, ‘yellu-bella’ was distributed to the children.
The school re-opened for teachers on 3-08-2020. Teachers were oriented in the use of Google Meet and have begun using the same to teach high school students.

A farewell party for children completing Std. 10 was organized on 11-03-2020. Mr. Niranjan Bhatt, Office manager, Department of Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Bangalore was the Chief Guest; Mrs. Poornima was also present. Rtn Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, presided over the function. CA.D.L Suresh Babu, Secretary, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, Mrs. Manasa Devi, Advisor of Sunaad School, Mrs. Padma Prabha, Head Mistress, and Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Principal of the college were the distinguished guests on the dais. All students of Std. 10 were given certificates, gifts, and mementos by the chief guest. The chief guest encouraged children with his inspirational speech and was honoured. Mrs. Padma Prabha welcomed the guests and Mrs. Dakshyani H.M. of the primary section proposed a vote of thanks. An enjoyable entertainment programme marked the end of the function.

Ganesh Chathurthi celebrated at the school on 24th August, 2020. ‘Prasadham’ was distributed among the teachers and the idol was immersed.
Republic Day
Republic Day was celebrated on the 26th of January, 2020 in the school library. Children were given knowledge about Dr. Ambedkar and the importance of Republic Day.
India’s 74th Independence Day
Independence Day was celebrated on August 15th, 2020 by the teachers. Head Mistress, Mrs. Padma Prabha hoisted the National flag. The national anthem was sung by the teachers and sweets were distributed at the end of the programme.

Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 5th September, 2020. The Bank Manager and the staff of State Bank of India visited the school and presented flowers, sweets, and an idol of goddess Saraswathi to Sunaad School on behalf of SBI as a token of love and appreciation. They appreciated the work of teachers and wished everyone a ‘Happy Teachers’ Day’.

New year Celebrations: The staff, students, and parents of MTC welcomed the new year on January 1st with cakes and cheering!
World Hearing Day was celebrated on the 3rd of March. Special invitee, Dr. Purushothama spoke about the significance of the day. Children and mothers participated in the ‘Cyclothon’ on 7th March organized by Dr.S.R.C.ISH.
Makar Sankranti: was celebrated on 15th January. ‘Yellubella’ was prepared and distributed among children; how the festival is celebrated in various parts of India was explained to children. Netaji Subhaschandra Bosch’s birthday was celebrated on 23rd January. A photograph of the freedom fighter was garlanded and floral tributes were offered. Mahatama Gandhi’s death anniversary was commemorated on the 30th of January. 2 minutes of silence was observed at 11 o’clock, ‘Meera Bhajan’ was sung, and a flora tribute was offered by mothers and children. Maha Shivarathri festival was celebrated on the 20th of February. The mythological background of the festival was retold. Every year the children participate in Independence Day celebrations with great enthusiasm. Even though children were forced to celebrate the festival virtually this year, their spirits were not curtailed. All mothers were asked to teach their children about freedom fighters and prepare them for a fancy dress competition on Independence Day. Mothers and children took that suggestion seriously; children dressed up as freedom fighters and spoke about them. Mrs. Mamatha B.V. and Mrs. Manjula, staff of MTC, selected the best participants who will be awarded when the center re-opens. On occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami, the story of Sri Krishna was sent to children prior to the festival. Mothers were requested to dress their children in different attire of Lord Krishna and other character in Sri Krishna story. Children participated with great religious devotion. All the participants will be given gifts as a token of appreciation for their efforts.
Field Trip
Children of MTC were taken to Lal-Bhag for a trip. Staff of MTC accompanied the children and mothers. Children received knowledge of plants and vegetables.
Celebrations
On March 2nd, the 13th Anniversary of MTC was celebrated. Dr M.N. Nagaraja, Dr. Madhuri Gore, Dr. Rashmi Bhat and institute staff attended the program. Mothers of MTC thanked the management of Dr S.R.C.ISH for providing training to them. Dr. M.N. Nagaraja distributed certificates to mothers who successfully completed 3 years of training at MTC.
Women’s Day was celebrated on March 9th; various competitions were conducted for mothers and Dr. Madhuri Gore, Professor, Dr.S.R.C.ISH distributed prizes to the winners. Mothers sang “Samatha Geethe” written by Dr. Vijaya Dobbe on this occasion.
Dealing with the Pandemic
Overcoming the odds, MTC activities continued despite the centre being closed from March 11th on account of Covid-19. WhatsApp groups were formed and Mrs. Rathna Shetty offered tele-rehabilitation services to children and parents attending MTC. Daily activity and work up routines were shared online and feedback sessions were also held. The necessity to use masks imposes new challenges on individuals with hearing impairment and those communicating with them. Masks block valuable visual cues and modify auditory output. In an attempt to overcome these barriers, the Mothers Training Center designed transparent masks to aid in therapy. These keep in line with government rules and guidelines on social distancing while facilitating use of visual cues for communication as well. The center also offered financial support to two needy families from among themselves; they were offered Rs.13,000/- and Rs.14,000/- each.

Makara Sankranti was celebrated on January 14th, 2020. Parents of ASD decorated the department with colourful rangoli. Pongal was distributed to all by the parents.

Training Programmes conducted
On 27th January, 2020, a workshop on ‘Discovering one’s potential as a teacher’ was conducted for Sunaad School teachers. Teachers were they were given questionnaires’ to fill, and a few activities to do; relaxation techniques were taught and tips to work with a special child on the daily basis were given to the teachers.
Teachers of Sunaad School at the workshop A Parent Training Programme was conducted for 3 days on the 17th, 18th & 19th of February for parents of children attending Developmental Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Parents were trained to work on developmental goals including self-help skills, gross motor coordination, fine motor & bilateral coordination, goals focusing on cognition including those related to attention, perceptual motor skills, and concept learning, and behavioural goals including achievement of sitting behaviour. 16

SASH Corner Sports Day was held on the 13th of March 2020. Events included athletics and cricket for girls and boys. The day was lively with enthusiastic students dressed in their class colours. Cheers of encouragement, disappointed moans, and shouts of joy encouraged participants who displayed not just their talents but great sportsmanship as well. The Annual Cultural Programme of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and HearingBangalore “AIKYA 2020” was virtually conducted by SASH in from 25th April to 30th May 2020. It was a weeklong programme during the nation-wide lockdown due to the pandemic COVID-19. The SASH president inaugurated the function with enthusiasm. Students participated wholeheartedly and made AIKYA 2020 a huge success. The events included music, recitation, dance, extempore speech, pantomime, and singing competitions; faculty
of the institution were given the privilege to judge the programmes. There was fierce competition among the participants. Some events were held in groups. All the events were exciting and the audience enjoyed them very much. The SASH also took to Instagram (social media) to showcase the student talents. Welcome: Chairman & Director - Lion V.V. Krishna Reddy
Lion V.V. Krishna Reddy was born in a family of agriculturalists in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. He has received is B.Tech degree in mechanical engineering from Sri Venkateswara University and started his life as a Associate Lecturer in an engineering college in Chennai. Wanting to continue his contribution to the country, he joined the Defense Civil Services as a scientist in the prestigious Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He worked on the testing, analysis and mounting of electronic equipment of various RADARS used in missile projects especially the AKASH Missile project and distinguished himself by presenting a paper at an international Conference on CAD, CAM, Robotics and CAE held at IIT, Delhi. In 1994 he resigned from his job and started a property development company, VARS Builders Pvt. Ltd. of which he is the Chairman & Managing Director. Fuelled by the desire to serve the underprivileged he joined the Lions Club of Bangalore East in 1995. His commitment and leadership qualities contributed to his meteoric rise in Lionism, to be elected as the District Governor of Lions District 324 D6 in 2006-07 and later in 2007-2008 as the Council Chairman of South India Multiple District. Lion Reddy was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association’s 93rd International Convention, held in Sydney, Australia, in 2010. His Home club, Lions Club of Bangalore East’s permanent project Dr SRC Institute of Speech & Hearing in Lingarajapuram is one of the best Speech and Hearing Institutes in South Asia. Networking with hospitals in UK and Bangalore Speech & Hearing Trust as its trustee, Krishna Reddy was able to organize free hearing aids for nearly 2000 hearing impaired. Recognizing his services to the community and to Lions Clubs International Lion Krishna Reddy was awarded 18
with Several Awards and Medals. To name a few, He was honored with the Knight of Leadership Medal at the 91st International Convention held at Bangkok and the Humanitarian Partner Award at the 93rd International convention held at Sydney, for his contributions. The feather in his cap is the title conferred by Past International President Lion Dr Ashok Mehta, the highest award given by the Lions Clubs International ‘The Ambassador of Good Will Award’ at 89th International Convention, held at Boston USA. He has personally contributed 100,000 US$ to Lions Clubs International Foundation, towards their worldwide program to combat preventable blindness. He served as the Editor of The Lion India Magazine for three years which reaches 2,80,000 Lions in India every month. Lion Reddy served as the International Faculty for District Governors training at the 99th International Convention held at Fukuoka in, Japan in 2017 & 100th International Convention held at Chicago, USA in 2018. Director Reddy is active in numerous professional and community organizations, including the Builders Association of India and the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Associations of India. He is also a patron member of the Indian Red Cross Society. Lion Reddy is married to Gowri, a Member of the Lions Club of Bangalore Lady Bird. She is also a member of the Bangalore Stock Exchange Ltd. The couple is blessed with two children. Their son Siddarth is married to Laukika; both have done their MBA from Herriot Watt University, Scotland. Their daughter Sourya is a Fashion Design Graduate from Raffles Millennium International, Bangalore and has done a Masters Program in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management at LIM College, New York and presently employed in New York. Both their children and daughter-in-law are Lion members and Melvin Jones Fellows.

Farewell: Outgoing Chairman, Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh
Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, an educationist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social activist, served as Chairman of the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust and Director of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, and Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired from April 2007 to September 2020. Under his able guidance, the institute has grown in leaps and bounds. He has expanded and enriched the activities of Dr. S.R.C.ISH by excellent networking with the Trustees, Donors, Lions Club, Rotary International, Infosys, and NRIs. He initiated academic programs including the B.Ed. Special Education and PG courses. The BN. Gupta Research Centre was established during his tenure. Thanks to him, services including free hearing aid distribution, and the mobile speech and hearing
diagnostic and therapy clinic are regularly underway. He also instituted scholarships for students who excel in academics. He was instrumental in getting grants for free school education for underprivileged students of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired under Child Centric Grant by Government of Karnataka. His service to society through the institute has been widely recognized as evidenced by his numerous accolades and awards including an Honorary Doctorate for Social service (2015). With immense gratitude, we bid farewell to Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh and thank him for his tireless service and dedication to the institute.

The institute renders speech and language intervention services for adults with different language disorders. A specialized service unit has been established in the
institute to provide multiple rehabilitation services under one roof that includes Speech Language therapy, Physio and Occupational therapy, Psychological and Social Support therapy. The recovery in the individuals afflicted depends on the frequency of therapy, family support system as well as nature and extent of the brain insult. However, initiating early intervention service will have long lasting impact of recovery on the individual. This will give you a gross knowledge on the status of your hearing. The results from the mobile application might not give you the exact condition of your hearing, but it will be able to tell you if your hearing is affected significantly and if you need to seek urgent help. However, it should be kept in mind that getting a hearing assessment done with an audiologist will give you a good explanation of your hearing health and the management options available for it. 4. Book an appointment for hearing assessment Fix an appointment with a nearby audiologist or health care professional for detailed audiological assessment and management. 5. Aural hygiene Follow the aural (ear) hygiene regulations and the social distancing guidelines • Do not use ear buds to clean your ears • Do not listen to music over headphones in loud volumes and longer hours • Make sure no foreign objects get into your ears, if you feel it has, then meet with and ENT at the earliest. • Keep your ears dry • Wear ear protective devices if you are exposed to work related or leisure related noises. 6. You were supposed to finish your final year with farewells, and graduations, and parties and more than anything, walking out of your college knowing that it was for the very last time. But you aren’t getting a glorious privilege that you earned, and that is really terrible. I’d like very much to sugar coat it, but that’s the honest truth.

Now with that out of the way, let me tell you why, one day, you’re going to look back on all of this time and actually smile; because you will forever be known as the Lockdown Class [I may trademark that ;)]. You will go down as the most enduring class in all of history! And that’s something you should embrace, because all of this will only make you stronger, more resilient, and more prepared for the inevitable future disappointments you will all suffer over and over again. You might think I’m kidding, and I kind of am because I use humour to help deflect my own pain and we’re all feeling that pain right now. You see I have a niece in the ‘lockdown class’ and I am close friends with some in the ‘lockdown class’ and I have more patients than I’d like to admit who cannot do what they want to, because of the lockdown. I’ve seen first-hand the pain and disappointment this unfortunate situation has caused. But back to the humour part, because I am kidding (in a way) that life is a series of disappointments and you’ll be better prepared because of this. See, life really is a series of disappointments and also a series of sweet victories and wonderful friendships and everlasting memories. It is true love and utter heartbreak. It’s exciting and boring as hell. It’s exhilarating and mundane. Your future will be filled with all things amazing and terrible. The whole point of life is to experience the full range of emotions and experiences. You’d be short changed if everything was awesome because sadness and pain are valuable. Some of the best art and history that still endures came from sadness and pain (most of it actually). So what I’m getting at, is that you have an opportunity to use this experience and use this time (one unlike any other in human history) to your best advantage. The world we live in, has by and large, simply stopped for a moment. Not your neighbourhood or your city or state or even your country, The. Entire. World.
We’re all at home. We’re all granted so much time with our families and loved ones and more importantly, with ourselves! Will you miss your graduation day? Yes! Is that fair? Of course not! But… you know what? I honestly barely remember anything about my graduation day but I know I’ll remember these days and weeks, and these months more clearly than any other time in my life. Now is the time to think about what you’re going to do to make the world a better one. We shouldn’t go back to ‘normal’, because ‘normal’ wasn’t the best for the world. We can do better. We can slow down, we can be kinder to the Earth and to each other. We can share things and consume less stuff. We can forge a brighter path. But here’s the catch it’s got to come from you guys. We can’t do it as well as we should be - we’ve shown that time and again. Older people aren’t the greatest when it comes to making real change. People my age aren’t so great at it either. But you know what? You guys are the best! Your spirit, your ingenuity, and passion! This is what we need if we’re going to use this time to reboot humanity- because we need to, and it’s a big job. We have a little head start here and we have all of you behind us. We can push the future in the right direction, just a few short inches at a time, so that it all ends up in a very different place, years from now. So in closing, yes, we do sympathize with the ‘Lockdown Class’. You have all been cheated and that is extremely unfortunate... but, it will not define you. I’ve heard from enough of you over the years to know that that’s true. What your memory of this time looks like years from now is completely up to you. I believe in you, and the world believes in you! Congratulations on all that you’ve achieved and all that you will achieve! Now go out there in the days to come and crush it!
Testing for COVID-19 To ensure the safety of all those who visit the institute, testing for the novel coronavirus was conducted free-of-cost at the institute on the 21st and 22nd of September, 2020. All those who wished to get themselves tested were able to do so. Testing was conducted in a hygienic and safe manner. Almost all the staff availed of the service.

Clinical Facilities Department of Hearing Studies Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies. Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service. Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs. Our experts in the institute effectively carry out this specialised service.
Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible. Cleft lip and Palate - refers to a physical condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth leading to speech disorders. Cerebral Palsy (CP) - reflects a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordinations due to anomaly of the developing brain.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life. Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain. Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent. Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing. Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ). IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. Other Unique Specialized Services Reaching out beyond medical diagnostic and clinical services, the Institute has enlarged its commitment to the cause through founding and efficient management of schools that cater to specific needs : School for children with Autism and Learning Disability for slow learners. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired that provides primary and middle school main-stream education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training trains individuals with basic sign language skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level courses in Indian Sign language. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through which the institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out-of-school children with special needs. Mothers’ Training Centre that provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment by providing adequate training for their mother. The services offered by the Institute are expanding meeting every emerging need in the society. Placement Cell - A separate cell that is well connected with the corporate world has been set up for finding rewarding and suitable jobs / careers for speech and hearing impaired adults. Mobile Camps and Outreach Screening Services are regularly conducted at neonatal wards of hospitals and nursing homes, schools, villages, community health centres, institutions and organisations which identify speech, hearing and learning problems. Physiotherapy: • Facilities available include ultrasound, massage, IFT, was therapy, CPM, Stimulation and TENS • Conditions that can be treated include low back ache, cervical spondylosis, knee pain (arthritis), shoulder injuries, stroke and other neurological conditions. Podiatric conditions like cerebral palsy, etc.
