Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust Meeting
The Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust held their meeting on 25th June, 2014. Trustees discussed issues related to development activities, allocation of funds and grants for various activities of the institute, events related to college, institute, and hostels. The Trustees took appropriate decisions on policy matters and monitoring aspects. The trustees were happy that Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur has agreed to sponsor the Gym and Health Care Centre at the institute. Trustees decided that the centre should be dedicated in his name. The Trust extends its grateful thanks to benevolent donors for release of funds for various activities and for their voluntary unstinted support and patronage.

Meeting of Smt. K.S. Bramarambha and Dr. K.S. Sriram Endowment Committee was held on 19th May, 2014 at Karnataka Arya Vysya Charitable Trust Office and discussed issues related to developmental activities including the opening of Gym & Health Care Centre at the institute. Sri C.R. Jayachandra Setty and other members of Endowment Committee prevailed upon Sri Bhojakumar S. Konanur for funding of Gym & Health Care Centre. We are thankful to them.

Prof. Dr. Prathibha Karanth
Prof. Dr. Prathibha Karanth is a Speech Language Pathologist with nearly 40 years of experience in several national institutions in India. She has had a long standing interest in language disorders, both in children and adults. She has worked extensively in the areas of the adult aphasias, acquired dyslexias, learning disability, specific language impairment and communication in autism/pervasive developmental disorders. Her work covers the clinical aspects as well as research and training. The development and the continuous fine tuning of the Com-DEALL model is the result of her vast and varied clinical experience and research interests. She also Director of Com-DEALL Trust. With her appointment as Professor Emeritus the research activities at the institute will get a boost.

Seminars / Workshops / Conferences at the Institute • On 9th May 2014, Dr. Parimala Raghavendra , Flinders University, South Australia gave a talk to the staff and the post graduate students on the topics ‘Disability and Use of Social Network Media’ & ‘Comprehensive and Multi-Dimensional Description of Participation of Children with Physical Disabilities and Complex Communication Needs’.

• On April 12th and 13th 2014, the third cochlear implant workshop was conducted at Dr. Medikeri’s Super Specialty ENT center, Basavanagudi, Bangalore. Dr. Madhuri Gore, (Deputy Director Technical & Principal, Dr. SRCISH) delivered a talk on the topic entitled ‘Electrophysiological measures in the selection criteria for cochlear implantation’ and Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat (Vice Principal & HOD, Dept. Hearing Studies, Dr. SRCISH) spoke on the topic ‘Pragmatics and Theory of Mind in Children with Hearing Impairment’. The workshop was attended by the staff of department of hearing studies and postgraduate students (MASLP and M.Sc. Audiology). • On 23rd April 2014, Mr. Nagarjun, Clinical Audiologist, Widex India Private Limited gave a talk on Assistive Listening device ‘UNIDEX’ product to the staff in the department. • On 27th June 2014, a hands-on-training programme was conducted for the staff in the Department of Hearing Studies by Siemens India Ltd. regarding their new products ‘Orion’ and ‘Sirion’.

Upcoming Seminars / Workshops / Conferences at the Institute We are very enthused to inform that the institute will be organizing a 3 day National Seminar on ‘Assessment of Neurogenic Communication Disorders: Illustrative Case Studies’ from 21st to 23 August 2014 in the institute auditorium. Delegates will be able to expand their knowledge base, share their research work on related topics through poster/platform presentations (following selection through peer review) on a national platform and may also gain Rehabilitation Council of India Continuation Rehabilitation Education points (subject to RCI granting CRE status). A registration fee of Rs.1500/- for students and Rs.1700/- for professionals is applicable. Interested persons are requested to contact Dr. Madhuri Gore, Organizing Secretary.

Awareness Programme: Four of our Staff members Dr. Tara S., consultant ENT Surgeon, Ms. Alphonsa Joseph, Head of Psychology Unit, Ms. Prema Kumari, Camp Coordinator and Mrs. Dakshayini, Special Educator, Sunaad School for children with Hearing Impairment were deputed by Dr. Rashmi Bhat, HOD Dept. of Hearing Sciences, to orient the gathering on early identification and early intervention for clients with communication disorders emphasizing on hearing impairment on 28th & 29th of April 2014. The programme conducted by the Department of Disabled Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka, in NIMHANS, was targeted to help the Anganwadi Workers, Health Workers, and Teachers.
Participation in Jnana Degula 2014 In order to create awareness on professional courses in Speech and Hearing, Institute participated in Jnana Degula 2014, a premier education expo, conducted by Deccan Herald and Prajavani on 24th and 25th May, 2014 held at Jayamahal Palace Ground. Professional guidance and counselling were given by the staff of the institute to students who visited the stall regarding prospects of Speech and Hearing course. Many students and parents visited the institute stall. The event was a grand success.

Rehabilitation Council of India Inspection RCI inspection was conducted for the courses MASLP, M.Sc. Audiology & M.Sc. Speech Language Pathology, by Prof. Dr. Asha Yathiraj (All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore) and Dr. Powlin Catherine (Madras ENT Research Foundation, Chennai) on 16th May 2014. The interaction was found to be very useful in strengthening the activities of the Institute.
Other Accomplishments i. The institute is represented in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS, New Delhi). ii. The institute is nominated as a member in the IEEE, Bangalore as a member of the core committee in Communication Disability special interest group. iii. The institute is involved in the development of indigenous ABR along with Mr. Nitin Sisodia of Sohum Innovation Lab. iv. The institute was involved in training the medical doctors in disability certification organized by the Director, Dept. for the Empowerment of Differently Abled & Senior Citizens, Govt. of Karnataka. Honorable Chief Commissioner of Disabilities Mr. P.K. Pincha, New Delhi, delivered inaugural address as Chief Guest. Over 100 medical doctors participated in this event.
v. The institute was represented in the meeting organized by the Administrative Training Institute, Mysore, to sensitize officials from District Commissioner’s Office, WCD, District Disabled Welfare Office, Directorate for Disabled Welfare, and District Disability Rehabilitation Centers held in Vikasa Saudha on 21st June, 2014. On this occasion the need for early identification and diagnosis of children with Hearing Impairment, intervention, capacity building for disability certification, involving AWWs in early identification of children with disability, immunizing adolescent girls against Rubella, creating post for Sign language Interpreters and identifying fluent users of Sign language either from any teacher of deaf or children of deaf adults and notifying them as interpreters, and making provision for Cochlear Implant surgery and intervention were some of the points highlighted.
World Autism Awareness Day - Walkathon
World Autism Awareness Day was celebrated at the Institute on 2nd April, 2014. The dress code for the awareness program was BLUE on the World Autism day. The entire Institute was lit Blue and all the staff of the Institute, college students, parents, & children with autism, were invited to come in blue.

An unforgettable Walkathon (Temple complex to Institute-9.00am-10.30am) was arranged in which all the staff members from the college, students, parents and children participated. The walkathon was flagged off by K.S. Eshwarappa, Ex- BJP Minister, Rtn. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, Prof. R. Rangasayee, Director Technical, and Dr. Madhuri Gore, Deputy Director technical and Principal. Following the walkathon an expert Lecture was delivered by Dr. Prathibha Karanth, Trustee, at 11.00am, in the Institute auditorium to the gathering on the need for awareness and services for children with Autism.

Other activities held on World Autism Day include: i. Various play Zones for Children with autism were arranged by Mrs. Pallavi Dinesh, Team leader of Developmental Eclectic Approach to Learning Language (DEALL) Unit. ii. Stress Busting Activities for Parents, wherein yoga was demonstrated by Ms. Mageetha Ravi, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) teacher. iii. Parents were made aware of technology and various methods used to facilitate Language and Communication,
and elaborate demonstration for the same was provided by Ms. Reeta Philip, Speech and Language Pathologist, DEALL unit. iv. Special Education Activities were demonstrated to parents by the staff in the Psychology department viz., Ms. Lathina, Ms. Sheela & Ms. Sushma – DEALL Unit. Occupational / physiotherapy activity were demonstrated by Mr. Aychut, DEALL Unit. v. Books and Research articles on Autism were displayed in the Library.

World Voice Day The World Voice Day was celebrated in the institute on the 16th of April 2014, and a free Voice Camp was held. To all the 8 clients who responded for the write up “Take care of your voice, says doctors� in the Deccan Herald (17th April issue) a free diagnostic assessment was done by the voice team: Dr. Sanjay Subbaiya, ENT Surgeon, Ms. Anita Reddy, SLP and Ms. Purba Sengupta, SLP. The diagnostic package included Stroboscopy, objective and perceptual assessment of voice. All the respondent appreciated the initiative and referred many others for voice assessment subsequently.

The Graduation Ceremony for the out-going batches of 2014 was celebrated on the 1st of May 2014 at the institute auditorium. We were privileged to have Prof. Dr. P. Satish Chandra, Director & Vice Chancellor, National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences, Bangalore as the Chief Guest. Also we were fortunate to have Dr. N. Anjaneya Murthy, Dean, PG Studies, Sri Kalabairaveshwara Ayurvedic Medical College, Hospital and Research centre, Bangalore, as the Guest of Honor. The ceremony was presided over by Rtn. M.S. Induction Ceremony 2014 The induction ceremony for the 2014 batch of B.SLPA was conducted on the 25th of June 2014. Rtn. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust welcomed the gathering. Prof. R. Rangasayee, Director (Technical), introduced the students to the discipline of Speech and Hearing. Dr. Madhuri Gore, Deputy Director (Technical), enlightened the students about our institution. Dr. Rashmi Bhat, HOD Dept. of Hearing Sciences and Dr. B.S. Premalatha, HOD Dept. of Speech Language Studies gave briefs on their respective department and introduced the department staff. Ms. Alphonsa Joseph, Head of Psychology Unit, elucidated on how to seek help when they need it. All the students introduced themselves and received the light of knowledge from Prof. R. Rangasayee. The mother’s training center unit reopened on 19th of May 2014 after summer vacation. Ms. Ashwini Rao, Junior Clinical Specialist and Mr. Devaiah K.B., Product Specialist from Cochlear Medical Device Company India Pvt. Ltd., gave a talk on care and maintenance of cochlear processor on the 4th of June 2014. The parents discussed and clarified their doubts and apprehensions.

Re-opening of School: School re-opened for the academic year 2014-2015 on the 2nd of June 2014. We are very glad to welcome the new students. Teachers meeting: Teacher’s meeting was conducted by the principal Mrs. Padmaprabha. The meeting focused on class allotment, subject allotment and classroom teaching. Teachers were allotted responsibility of various activities conducted during the academic year. Furthermore, importance of maintaining Hearing aids, neatness, discipline and regularity was highlighted. Sports Meet: Children of Sunaad School participated in a sport meet which was conducted at Brigade Park Stadium, Malleshwaram. A total of 54 students participated in various games like football & tug of war (girls & boys) and showcased their group spirit and competitiveness. They won prizes for Football-under 12 years (Boys), Tug of War-under 12 years (Girls), and Tug of War-under 16 years (Boys). Sign Language Cell
The workshop and training programmes in functional Sign language that we conducted for the benefit of the parents of hearing impaired children and the Staff of Dr. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, had created awareness among the general public on the importance of learning the unique mode of communication of the deaf. As a result, there was quite a number of admissions during the months of April, May and June. Most of them, working in software and multinational companies, have expressed their eagerness and interest in learning sign language as it is practical oriented and of the shortest duration, compared to other courses conducted for speech and hearing impaired individuals. Most of our students have successfully completed their sign language courses, enjoying using the skill in communicating with their deaf associates / co-employees. Our sign language interpretation services also have gained momentum. To illustrate (all names changed): i. Karan (H.I.) who married a hearing impaired girl arranged by his parents had hardly lived with his wife for a month as she preferred to live with her mother and help her in her work. She is employed in a liquor shop for washing and cleaning. Counseling services were given to him. However, the marriage ended up in a divorce and now Karan is looking forward to new alliances for a remarriage. ii. Naga (H.I.), an alcoholic accompanied with his employers and factory union authorities supporting him, wanted his statement to be interpreted in the civil court of law. It was regarding a notice issued to suspend him from work for his misbehavior with authorities and for being absent from work for a longer duration at regular intervals. Interpreter services were rendered to resolve the same. Classes in English language along with Sign language were started for adult deaf persons. At present, a total of three students are enrolled for the same. These classes are designed to empower person with Hearing Impairment by teaching American Sign Language and along with it corresponding written English statements and use of Functional Sign language. Students currently enrolled are Ms. Haimavathi Samraj, who has recently passed out from Sunaad School for children with Hearing impairment, Mr. Sudipto Bagchi, who was fitted with Cochlear Implant (CI) and had studied in Regular school and is presently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts Degree. Interestingly, Mr. Sudipto Bagchi though has fluent verbal language and uses CI, he is learning sign language to help other Deaf individuals. Mr. Feroz Khan, a profoundly Deaf person from Bangalore has also enrolled for the course. The following activities are in the offing: 1. A review programme in Functional Sign language to the staff, who have undergone Sign language training during the beginning of this year. 2. Interpretation of spoken English / Kannada / or any other into sign language for those who have some exposure to deaf teaching.

Audiometry: measurement of hearing/measuring sensitivity of hearing Hearing Aid (HA) prescription and Fitting: relates to trial and selection of a hearing aid suitable to the individuals nature and degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: devices, which couple the hearing aids to the ear and are made to fit in the individuals’ ear. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: any problem in the working of the hearing aid can be repaired or worn out parts can be replaced. A hearing aid can also be periodically checked to see if it is functioning properly. Auditory Verbal Therapy: is a specialized type of therapy designed to teach a child to use the hearing provided by a hearing aid or a cochlear implant for understanding speech and learning to talk. Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: rehabilitation for children post cochlear implantation is an accepted part of the implant process. A young child with a cochlear implant and her family require a comprehensive habilitation program to help her utilize the auditory signal and to naturally integrate the various components of communication including listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: refers to the setting of the electrical stimulation limits necessary for the cochlear implant user to “hear” soft and comfortably loud sounds. Since the Cochlear Implant can only process sounds in a very narrow range (6-15 dB), it must be able to compress the natural range of sounds (normal speech is usually between 40-60 dB) into this small band. Noise Measurement: measuring the noise levels in industries and public areas and ascertain that it is within permissible limits and not a hazard to the hearing sensitivities of the people in the environment.

Misarticulation: is a speech defect in which an individual substitute, omit, add or distort the speech sounds as result make the speech unintelligible. Stuttering: stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggling behaviors, such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. Stuttering can make it difficult to communicate with other people, which often affects a person’s quality of life. Cleft lip and Palate: refers to a condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth. Cerebral Palsy (CP): is a term used to describe a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination due to anomaly of the developing brain. Autism: is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior and manifests within the first two years of life. Aphasia: is the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.
Dysarthria: is an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability: as aneurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite his having average or higher intelligence. Laryngectomy: is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking. Dysphagia: is a medical condition that causes a person to have problems in swallowing.
Psychology Unit
Developmental assessments are conducted on children to identify children with developmental delays (DQ/SQ) IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are intended to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of a individuals mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: are tests of general intellectual abilities. They measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. School for children with Autism and Learning Disability, slow learners. Voice clinic: provides services in the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the voice. Endostroboscopy: It is a quick effective procedure to study the structure and functions of the vocal folds. ENT valuation: Routine evaluation of ear, nose and throat are available from an ENT consultant. School Screening: Service offered to schools for identification of speech, hearing and learning problems in children. Rural screening Camps: Service offered to any health centre, institution, organisation or industry or companies to identify people’s (adults and children) abilities in speech and hearing. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired: Provides primary and middle school education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training: Equips individuals with basic skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level recognized courses in Indian Sign language. National Open School (NIOS): Institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out of school children with special needs. Mothers Training Centre: provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment and provides training for their parents. Placement Cell: for adult deaf and graduating rehabilitation professionals.
