Greetings to All! I am happy to share that our academic courses have received overwhelming patronage this academic year; both the college as well as Sunaad School have drawn the attention of eligible students for admission. The college received four and a half times more applications than the number of seats and 44 students were inducted in to the BSLPA Course on Induction Day! Students of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired Class X (Batch of 2017-2018) received their results. We congratulate them on their outstanding performances! Graduation Day for BSLPA and Masters Students was celebrated in this quarter. We are pleased to be sending out a new set of professionals ready to serve society. The newly inaugurated B.N. Gupta Research Centre has taken off to a good start with valuable input from our Research Advisory Committee. I am extremely pleased to welcome back Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, Ex-Director AYJNISHD, Ex-Director (Technical) Dr. SRCISH, who has joined us as CEO of the Institute. International Yoga day was successfully celebrated at the institute by the staff and students. We are happy to have received support from Cognizant Foundation, Alwarpet, Chennai, towards the purchase of various items for setting up an Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Learning Centre in Sunaad School. Grateful thanks for your continued patronage.

New Beginnings We are pleased to welcome back Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, Ex-Director of AYJNISHD, who also served our institute from 2003 until 2013 when he retired from the post of Director (Technical). He has joined us as the Chief Executive Officer on the 4th of June 2018. He was welcomed by the management. Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, introduced Dr. M.N. Nagarja, and Dr. Madhuri Gore, Principal, Dr. SRCISH, fondly recalled her experiences with him. In his address to the staff, Dr. M.N. Nagaraja expressed his desire to ensure that students are well equipped with essential clinical skills as they graduate from the institute. He also emphasized his role in promoting academics, clinical work, and research at the Institute in the days to come. We look forward to an exciting time ahead with him.

The Department of Speech and Language Studies invited Dr. Shantanu Tandon, M.S., DLO, DNB who is currently working as a Consultant ENT Surgeon & Laryngology Specialist at Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore, as a guest speaker on occasion of ‘World voice day’ which was held on April 16th , 2018. He delivered an excellent lecture on ‘Professional Voice care from an ENT

His presentation included interesting videos; it gave the students and staff who attended a surgeon’s perspective on assessment and management of voice, and helped in broadening their understanding of professional voice care. Public Awareness Activities Press meet at Press Club Bangalore, was held on April 9, 2018. Dr. Madhuri Gore, Principal spoke about the Institute and the services provided. Dr. B.S. Premalatha, HOD also spoke about the Department of Speech language studies, and shared information regarding the different cases seen and services offered. Dr. Anita Reddy, Associate Professor elaborated about the voice clinic, and free voice camp which was to be held at the institute from 9th-13th April, 2018. She also shared information on awareness regarding world voice day emphasizing on
importance of preservation of voice for professional voice users. An awareness program was conducted by distributing pamphlets for the above mentioned free voice camp. The pamphlets were distributed in the various Kannada and English newspapers. Many patients had visited the institute to get their voice evaluated. This awareness led other different speech and language disordered clients as well to approach DR. SRCISH for their respective assessments.

Events and Celebrations International Yoga Day
The Fourth International Yoga Day 2018 was celebrated on 21st June 2018, to commemorate the day . Across the country many Yoga awareness programs were conducted on this day. At our institute yoga is a regular part of the activities of students of the NIOS unit of the Psychology Department as well as Sunaad School. Ms. Usha conducted a session that introduced students to some of the ‘aasanas’ of yoga; staff and students participated in the event.

News from College Office Graduation Day 2018
Tuesday, 1st May 2018 was Graduation Day at the Institute. The event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guests Prof. T.D. Kemparaju, Vice Chancellor, Bangalore North University and Dr. Hari Krishna Maram, Vice Chancellor, Universal Digital University - USA, Digital Brand Ambassador - Vision Digital India. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust presided over the ceremony. 39 students from the BSLPA (Bachelor
of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology) Batch of 2014-18, 9 from M.Sc. Audiology, 10 from M.Sc. Speech, 20 from MASLP (Master of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology) Batches of 2016-18, and one student from Diploma Sp. Ed. (HI) graduated and took a professional oath together as they were on the verge of beginning their professional lives. In addition, students who scored the highest percentages in the academic year 2016-17 from all batches received cash awards.

Induction Ceremony The new batch of 44 BASLP (Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology) students joined on 14.06.18. The induction ceremony was presided by Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust. The Chief Guest on this occasion was Dr. Sister M. Genevieve, former Principal of Mount Carmel College and Education Consultant, the Guest of Honour was Professor Dr. M.S. Reddy, Registrar, Bengaluru North University. Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, CEO, Dr. SRCISH, gave the students a glimpse of the wide scope of the field as he introduced the course to them. The Chief Guest and Guest of Honour were honoured by the management committee members. In his address to the students, Professor Dr. M.S. Reddy highlighted the changes that he would implement in the new Bangalore North University. He also encouraged students to carry proudly the name of Dr. SRCISH and Bangalore North University. Dr. Sr. Genevieve congratulated the students for choosing ‘the road less travelled’ and highlighted the aspect of service in the profession of speech and hearing as she appealed to students to serve their future patients and society with love. Finally, Dr. M.N. Nagaraja lit candles for each one of the student to signify enlightenment and the passing on the knowledge.

Updates from Outreach Unit With the aim of reaching out to the underprivileged and those who are unaware/unable to reach the facilities of the Institute, the Mobile Speech and Hearing Bus was launched with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore East. The mobile outreach bus offers comprehensive audiological evaluation, treatment and consultation services for people with speech and hearing impairments. The project has been launched with the objective of providing preventive healthcare through hearing screening and early intervention services for rural and urban children. The services of the mobile speech and hearing clinic can be availed by elders as well.

Updates From Sunaad School On 14th April 2018, the children of Sunaad School celebrated Dr. Ambedkar Jayanthi, where the students and teachers remembered him as the Father of our Constitution. On 20th June 2018, Ramzan was celebrated. The significance of the festival was explained to the children and sweets were distributed to all.
The SSLC Board exam results were announced on 7th May 2018. Furqan secured the highest with a 67%, Anushri came second with 65% and Bhoomika third with 62%. Out of the 15 students who appeared, 3 secured first class, 8 secured second class, and 2 secured third class.

Updates from
Mother’s Training Center On World Environment Day, which fell on the 5th of June 2018, the children along with their mothers were taken to a nursery where they were taught to identify various types of plants. During this activity the mothers were trained to develop language concepts appropriate to the context.
The parents served biryani and sweets to all children. On 4th June, Mrs. Ramadevi, mother of a child with hearing impairment was invited from Mysore. She spoke about the importance of a mother’s role in mainstreaming their wards. She also shared her own experiences in teaching her son.
Mrs Lovely George, Administrator at the institute was invited to MTC, where she spoke about importance of plants and their contribution in protecting the environment; she gave away plants to all the children.
On 8th June 2018, Mrs. Shilpa, mother of Namana oriented the mothers about Mother’s Training Center and the benefits of training at MTC.
On 19th June 2018, Ramzan was celebrated, where the significance of the festival was explained to the children.
World Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June; Ms. Mageetha introduced yoga to mothers of children at MTC.
Updates From Sign Language Unit Month

• An English training program was conducted for the Deaf at [24]7, a BPO company. It was very encouraging to know that this organization has taken an initiative to train the Deaf in English for non voice chat processes. If eligible, they will be suitably placed in the company. • 2 people from the BPO sector joined the Functional sign language course. • 1 student joined the Functional English training course. • 9 students pursuing their Diploma in special education at the institute were also trained in sign language.

• TE Connectivity, an engineering company (that has employed the Deaf ) had eight of their employees trained in Functional sign language and Sensitization towards the Deaf. The Engineers actively participated in various activities, in which they learnt and practiced different signs. • 4 students, from various fields enrolled for the Functional Sign Language classes.
June
• A computer science student pursuing her doctorate came to the unit for her project on the recognition of signs in the Indian sign language. She was appropriately guided regarding the basics of signing and sources to tap for her research. • The yearly Sign Language training program for the psychology graduate students at Jyothi Nivas College began. This program was heartily taken forward, under the category of Group sign language training. The ever growing enthusiasm of the students was very encouraging. • 2 people joined the interpreter sign language course.

Updates from Psychology Unit This quarter was busy and eventful. Summer camp was held for special children in April and May 2018. On 17th April 2018, Ms. Nandini attended a meeting organized by the government of Karnataka at MS building, Bangalore for syllabus formation of special children, with the main focus on teacher education and moral building of parents.
The Unit also celebrated Ramzaan on 19th June 2018, where the significance of the festival was explained to the children and sweets were distributed to all. International Yoga day was celebrated on 21/06/18, where the students of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Unit and National Institute of Open Schooling Unit enthusiastically participated in the programs and performed yoga ‘aasanas’.
SASH Corner The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) conducts a number of events and programs for the students of the Institute every few months to make their academic life more fun and filled with more memories. The annual intra college fest, IGNITE 2018, was conducted on April 6th, which was an extremely fun- filled experience. Students got to showcase their talents in various areas, some of them being dance, duet song, movie making, and fashion show. The first year post graduate students bagged the overall championship trophy for IGNITE and Sports Day events. The day ended with unforgettable memories. A farewell party with the theme “Fly High” was conducted for our beloved outgoing seniors, (the 3rd year BSLPA and 2nd year Masters Students) was conducted on April 28th. It was a fantastic day filled with fun and games and Elections were held to elect the SASH members for the new academic year.

Vice Principal HOD - Hearing Studies Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing From the time the child is born, he engages in social communication. By the first birthday, he has started using words and at age four, he has more than 1,500 words to communicate. He is also making up stories, answering and asking questions, giving reasons, using imagination etc. However entering school poses a different challenge because he is in a totally different environment, with unknown people, peers and elders in a rule governed system. Schooling helps him in achieving literacy, the ability to read and write and understand the same. Further, he uses this ability in different situations and for different purposes, for example in school, for vocation and for recreation. It is the solid foundation on which lifelong learning, communication skills, employment and participation in the society are built. Literacy begins at home and starts at birth. It is a slow process based on continuous and consistent exposure
to good models during the development period. It depends on mutual interaction between listening and speaking as well as writing and reading. While the former happens in the informal home setting, reading and writing formally starts at school. The process of learning maybe different across children, there are those who pick up information by just listening (Auditory learners) versus some who need a visual representation of the same (Visual learners). There may be some other children who need to touch, feel and manipulate an object before they understand (Kinesthetic learners). Human beings spend a lot of time listening and communicating verbally, thus audition becomes important to the learning process. The following figure represents the amount of time allocated to different activities during school time.

It is essential for the caretakers to make a distinction between the terms Hearing and Listening. The former means that there is awareness about the presence or absence of a sound. There is little effort involved in this activity and it may not have a meaning to the individual. However, listening is for understanding thus one has to put effort for this process. This is because one needs to keep what is heard in memory, should remember it later, should compare it to what he has already heard and make decisions about what he has heard. The response he produces is based on all the other steps that have taken place before. To develop literacy skills, good auditory skills thus become a must. The heard sounds have to be put in some order to make a word. If one sound is replaced by another in the beginning, middle or at the end new words emerge. In addition, one should know the number of sounds in a word and how to break words into these components. This is very important when the child starts to associate heard sounds to print. The sequence of sounds and words has to be remembered to finally understand what is being heard. When there is a hearing loss (depending on type and degree of loss as well as onset), - Sounds of speech are misheard/ misrepresented - Production of speech may be incorrect - Reading, writing, spelling problems may be present. - Learning problems may be noticed. All the above may lead to poor academics, socialization and poor self-esteem. Present day lifestyles seem to stimulate the child more visually (Cellphones, video games, tablets and such gadgets). It has become such a menace that professionals in the field of speech and hearing have coined a term,
gadget babies, some of whom are late talkers and poor listeners. As a parent, one can include some of the following fun activities to make hearing and listening a way of life, not only for children with hearing impairment but for typically hearing children too. 1. Rhyming words.-for example, say five words that rhyme with “Cat” 2. Associating letters to sounds and vice versa. 3. Identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in a word. For example,what is the first sound in “Cat” and what is the last sound? 4. Saying words starting and ending with specific sounds. For example,give a word that starts with “B”. You can make it more interesting by giving a clue such as it’s the name of a fruit etc. 5. Break up a word into sounds. For example, how many sounds are there in the word “banana”? 6. Put sounds together to make words and replace sounds to make another word. For example,C..A..T. if R comes as a first sound what is the word ? 7. Count sounds in a word, clap or tap for the number of sounds. The issues in academics may not emerge till the child has reached the age when board work reduces and teachers start using more oral instructions, complicated directions and more complex language. Transition from primary level to middle school level is when problems become noticeable. It’s generally advisable to have an audiological assessment to rule out any hearing and processing issues at such a time. The Department of Hearing Studies at Dr.SRCISH is well equipped to provide such evaluations and provides training which are tailor made for specific needs of the individual.
Blocked Ear – Should we neglect or worry? Authored by Students of II MASLP & II M.Sc. & Edited by Dr. Srinivasa Raju woke up on his third day of trucking camp at Jammu with a sensation of his left ear being blocked. This was a common experience for him during this type of trucking; and the sensation usually disappeared once he came down to base camp. Today however, things were different... The sensation of having a blocked ear continued into the afternoon in spite of the rise in temperature, it continued even after he reached base camp, and was now accompanied with strange sounds being heard in that ear. He now began to worry! He made a phone call to a friend and to his utmost horror he found out that he could not hear from his left ear. Sensing that something was seriously wrong, he consulted an ENT doctor as soon as he returned home a few days later. He then underwent audiometric testing. ENT Doctor: “Raju, you have developed sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss in your left ear which 22
could have improved significantly if treated early. Unfortunately, in your case it has already been 10 days since you developed this hearing loss.” Raju: “Doctor, I didn’t feel that I had any hearing loss in my left ear initially. It was only a blocked sensation which is quite common for me during winter; I thought it was because of the cold.” ENT Doctor: “Yes Raju this disease is very tricky; many patients come with this complaint of their ear being blocked and sadly, when we tell them they have developed hearing loss most of them don’t believe us. By the time they finally decide to get treated, it is often too late” Raju: “Doctor, please do try and do something to get back hearing in my left ear!!! “ENT Doctor: “We can still try medication but I cannot definitely tell you that you will get back your hearing in that ear. Sorry!”

What is sudden SNHL?
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (Abbreviated as SSNHL in short) is defined as a Sensorineuralhearing loss of 30 dB or more over at least three contiguous frequencies, over a period of 72 hours or less.1 Hearing loss can range from mild hearing impairment to a total loss of hearing, and may be temporary or permanent. Regardless of the cause and degree of hearing loss, rapid assessment and early treatment is vital. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) usually occurs in one ear. It is usually due to sudden functional impairment of inner ear hair cells which transmit the sound signals into the nerve (8th Cranial Nerve) which sends the signals to the Brain. Most of the time, the exact cause of this type of hearing loss is not known. It is considered that sudden vascular spasm of the arteries which supply blood to the inner ear cuts off blood supply to the inner ear causing the hearing loss. If this is restored back to normal as early as possible, permanent dysfunction of the inner ear hair cells will be prevented. Hence, treatment of this disorder shouldn’t be delayed. Once diagnosed or even suspected, it should be considered as a medical emergency. So anyone who experiences SSNHL should get it treated as early as possible to get the best results of the treatment.
What causes sudden SNHL?
Only 10 to 15 percent of the people diagnosed with SSSHL have identifiable causes. The remaining 85-90% of SSNHL are idiopathic i.e. the cause is not known. These are thought to be due to arterial spasm of blood vessels supplying the inner ear. Ramesh returned from a swim and wanted to get his ear cleaned as he felt that his right ear was blocked. Using an ear bud to get rid of the water in his ears after a swim was a habit he had formed. This time, however, he did not get any relief from using the ear buds. He started using ear drops that bought over the counter at a medical store. Even after 15 days, there was no relief so he decided to consult an ENT Doctor. “Doctor, there is wax in my right ear please remove it’. “Ramesh there is no wax in your ear & my testing shows that you have nerve weakness in the right ear. Please get an Audiogram & show me the report”. Ramesh was not satisfied and took a second opinion but he received the same response. He finally got the Audiogram and visited the doctor again. “Ramesh, your Audiogram confirms that you have developed sudden weakness of your right hearing nerve about 15 days ago”.
“Ramesh, all neurological conditions are like this- we can treat them but not guarantee results. Also, you have come very late.” “Doctor, why are you telling me that it’s too late? I don’t find my hearing any worse than it was 15 days ago. In fact, it has remained the same.” “Ramesh, this type of hearing loss responds to treatment only if treated early. Usually results are very good if treated within 72 hours after the onset of the hearing loss. The best results are said to be found if the treatment is started within 24 hours after the onset of hearing loss.” “But doctor it is difficult for people to know that they have a hearing loss like this because very often they could have their ears blocked because of a common cold”. “Yes Ramesh, you are right. Since people don’t realize that they have a hearing loss and so the precious time that is best for treatment is lost. By the time they approach anyone for medical advice, a minimum of 3-4 days could be over. How come you didn’t notice the difference in hearing between the two ears while using your mobile? “Doctor I did notice it but I thought it was because of wax & neglected it. What can I do now, doctor?” “I will put you on medication for 15 days, after that come back and we will repeat the Audiogram. Let us hope for the best!” “I do hope I get back my hearing! Thank You Doctor.”
How is sudden SNHL diagnosed?
Patients should be examined by ENT Specialists to look for any outer or middle ear problem which might be causing the hearing loss. Next, the patient needs to get his/her hearing tested (Pure Tone Audiogram) to confirm/rule out SSNHL. This is the most important and useful investigation to diagnose SSNHL. Once it is confirmed that SSNHL is present, further investigations are required to rule out/confirm known causes for SSNHL. However, treatment should not be delayed waiting for results of other tests. Treatment should be started as soon as the diagnosis is made. At times, if there is no way of obtaining an Audiogram, even with clinical suspicion, treatment should be started so as to not waste precious time.
How is sudden SNHL treated?
“This Disorder usually doesn’t have a cause & it is reversible if treated at the early. Unfortunately, now it is too late”.
The most important treatment for sudden SNHL, especially in cases where the cause is unknown, is corticosteroids. In recent years, injection of steroids directly through eardrum into the middle ear (from here the steroids travel into the inner ear), called Intratympanic corticosteroid therapy, is said to be as efficient as systemic steroids.
“Doctor, there is such a lot of advancement in the medical field – there’s treatment for all diseases, even for cancer! And you’re telling me that there is no treatment for my problem”.
All treatment, especially steroidal treatment, needs to be done as early as possible to ensure the best possible results. Once the nerve cells die, no medicines will help in restoring the lost hearing!

Why is it important for people to know about this Disorder?
This disorder i.e. Sudden SNHL usually occurs in only one ear & since the other ear has normal hearing thresholds, the person who is affected will not able to perceive that they have a hearing loss until they test their hearing on the affected side, use a phone on the affected side, or try to listen from the affected ear by closing the normal ear. So most of the time they come with only one compliant i.e. blocked ear. An affected patient mainly complains of blocking sensation in the affected ear which he/she may attribute to the other causes like – cold attack ,water entering the ear, exposure to cold weather etc. This usually leads to this condition being neglected. The most peculiar thing here is that most of the time a sudden SNHL attack is precipitated when people are exposed to cold weather or after any attack of a common cold making patients come to a wrong conclusion that the blocked sensation is due to these other reasons. This factor delays the patient from seeking medical advice. By the time they come for medical advice, the crucial time during which treatment is the most beneficial is lost. Like most neurological conditions, this condition responds very well to treatment if it is started at the earliest. All clinical studies have confirmed the same. In fact, it is now considered as a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment. Once the crucial time is lost, the results for the treatment are not good & the chances of the hearing loss becoming permanent are greater. So, it is important that people should know about this tricky disorder so that they will not neglect any sensation of their ear being blocked & will seek medical advice as early as possible without any delay. By doing so, they can get back their hearing in the affected ear which can become irreversible & permanent if not treated immediately. “Good morning Doctor”. “Good morning Kumar, what happened? How is your wife?” “She is fine Doctor; this time I’ve come for myself ”. “What happened, Kumar?” “This morning when I woke up I felt giddy, and this feeling is still here, along with this, there is a loud ringing in my right ear and I feel like my ear is blocked”. “Did you have a cold recently?” “Yes Doctor, few days ago I had a cold which subsided with medicines; I also felt that the blockage might be because of the cold but then why there is giddiness ,Doctor?” “Let me examine you Kumar”. “Yes Doctor”.

“Kumar with my examination I feel you have developed hearing loss on your right ear. We will confirm by doing an Audiogram. Please get one done.” “Yes doctor I also felt I am not hearing well in my right ear since this morning, I will get back to you with an Audiogram”. Later that day, “Kumar, as expected your Audiogram shows SensoriNeural hearing loss in the right ear.” “How did this happen, Doctor?” “It is difficult to know the exact cause as it is often Idiopathic which means no cause can be found. Most of the time it is thought to be due to vascular spasm /post viral infection.” “Doctor, does that mean that I will not hear from my right ear for the rest of my life?” “No Kumar, it is reversible if treated early. Since you have come within 24 hours of losing your hearing, you will get back your hearing back completely!” “What happens if there is delay in treatment, Doctor?” “All studies have shown that if this disorder is treated immediately the results are good. If it is delayed for more then 7-10 days, then the loss may become permanent. This disorder is very tricky because, most of the time it happens on only one side & since patients hear normally from the other side they don’t notice that they have a hearing loss. They usually come with a blocked feeling in the affected ear & think it might be because of a cold or wax; they try to clean or take medicines for their cold. They come to doctor after all these fail, by that time there will be delay & that precious time is wasted. It is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.” “Doctor, if this condition is so serious common people should be made aware of it & also the importance of getting treated as early as possible to get back their hearing. Some articles should be written in magazines/News papers or the same can be even telecast. This will make people more alert, they will not neglect any blocked sensation in the ear, and the important treatable time won’t be missed.” “Yes, Kumar you are correct. However, very often even when patients come within 24 hours, they don’t believe what we say and refuse to be treated. They return after few days insisting on treatment at a stage that is too late”. “Yes Doctor, you are correct, some people don’t take things seriously; they think doctors are trying to mislead them. Doctor, will I get back my hearing?” “Definitely Kumar, because it is only 12 hours since the onset of hearing loss & more over you have agreed to get treated! Come we will start the treatment immediately.” “Thanks Doctor”.

Audiometry: measurement of hearing/measuring sensitivity of hearing Hearing Aid (HA) prescription and Fitting: relates to trial and selection of a hearing aid suitable to the individuals nature and degree of hearing loss and comfort level. Custom Ear Mould Making: devices, which couple the hearing aids to the ear and are made to fit in the individuals’ ear. Hearing Aid Repair and Service: any problem in the working of the hearing aid can be repaired or worn out parts can be replaced. A hearing aid can also be periodically checked to see if it is functioning properly. Auditory Verbal Therapy: is a specialized type of therapy designed to teach a child to use the hearing provided by a hearing aid or a cochlear implant for understanding speech and learning to talk. Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: rehabilitation for children post cochlear implantation is an accepted part of the implant process. A young child with a cochlear implant and her family require a comprehensive habilitation program to help her utilize the auditory signal and to naturally integrate the various components of communication including listening, speech, language, reading and thinking. Mapping for Cochlear Implant: refers to the setting of the electrical stimulation limits necessary for the cochlear implant user to “hear” soft and comfortably loud sounds. Since the Cochlear Implant can only process sounds in a very narrow range (6-15 dB), it must be able to compress the natural range of sounds (normal speech is usually between 40-60 dB) into this small band. Noise Measurement: measuring the noise levels in industries and public areas and ascertain that it is within permissible limits and not a hazard to the hearing sensitivities of the people in the environment.
Department of Speech Language Sciences
Misarticulation: is a speech defect in which an individual substitute, omit, add or distort the speech sounds as result make the speech unintelligible. Stuttering: stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggling behaviors, such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. Stuttering can make it difficult to communicate with other people, which often affects a person’s quality of life. Cleft lip and Palate: refers to a condition wherein a child is born with a split or torn lip(s) with a hole in the roof of the mouth. Cerebral Palsy (CP): is a term used to describe a non progressive group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination due to anomaly of the developing brain. Autism: is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior and manifests within the first two years of life. Aphasia: is the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.

Dysarthria: is an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth. Learning Disability: as aneurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite his having average or higher intelligence. Laryngectomy: is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking. Dysphagia: is a medical condition that causes a person to have problems in swallowing.
Psychology Unit
Developmental assessments are conducted on children to identify children with developmental delays (DQ/SQ) IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are intended to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of a individuals mental abilities. Intelligence Tests: are tests of general intellectual abilities. They measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability. Personality test: aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Behavior modification: is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disability Assessment: evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child. School for children with Autism and Learning Disability, slow learners. Voice clinic: provides services in the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the voice. Endostroboscopy: It is a quick effective procedure to study the structure and functions of the vocal folds. ENT valuation: Routine evaluation of ear, nose and throat are available from an ENT consultant. School Screening: Service offered to schools for identification of speech, hearing and learning problems in children. Rural screening Camps: Service offered to any health centre, institution, organisation or industry or companies to identify people’s (adults and children) abilities in speech and hearing. Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired: Provides primary and middle school education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children. Sign Language Training: Equips individuals with basic skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level recognized courses in Indian Sign language. National Open School (NIOS): Institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out of school children with special needs. Mothers Training Centre: provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment and provides training for their parents. Placement Cell: for adult deaf and graduating rehabilitation professionals.
